Wait, just how much does waffle mix go for on the black market?
Florida beachgoers were stunned when they saw a rattlesnake appear in the surf and struggle onto the sand Tuesday. Rhonda Saunders was at Pensacola Beach when she and others saw the snake struggling to keep its head above water. Saunders said a crowd watched as the snake fought its way to shore, appearing very weak. She said she felt sorry for it, but she had no intention of helping it. Animal control rescued the snake. (AP)

The City Attorney’s Office said Thursday that the prosecution of Nicholas Kauffroath was the first legal case of a motorized scooter driver under the influence with a charge in L.A. Kauffroath had a blood alcohol level more than three times the limit while operating a Bird scooter. (AP)
A Georgia man is accused of stealing 150 pounds of waffle mix from a former employer. Peachtree City police spokeswoman Lt. page three At last, back is back on the field THE DISTRICT Jamal Speaks removed his helmet on the Ballou sideline, the sweat still glistening off his forehead as he adjusted his posture. Greeted by an onslaught of bright lights and microphones thrust in his face, Speaks held a steady gaze as he looked into the cameras. There were still 4.7 seconds left in Ballou’s 29-26 victory over Theodore Roosevelt on Friday night, but Ballou’s senior running back was the center of attention. Reporters rapidly fired questions until the game clock hit 00:00 and Speaks ran over to shake hands with his opponents. The 18-year-old breathed a sigh of relief. Finally, after all the paperwork, emails, phone calls and questions about his eligibility from D.C. athletic bodies — all because he does not have a permanent residence — Speaks had played his first high school football game in nearly two years. Did he think it would come with this much publicity? No. Did he care? Not really. “It just feels like a blessing to be in this uniform again,” Speaks

said, a wide smile engulfing his face. Speaks’ jubilance came two weeks after he originally was supposed to play against Anacostia but was told he couldn’t because of questions about eligibility raised by Ballou Principal Willie Jackson. Speaks had already been deemed eligible by the D.C. State Athletic Association (DCSAA), which oversees all high school sporting events in the District. But according to Speaks, Jackson

“I have been off the field so long. insisted he couldn’t play because the District of Columbia Interscholastic Athletic Association (DCIAA), the city’s public high school athletic league, had ruled him ineligible in August. After a public outcry, D.C. Public Schools, in line with DCIAA, stated Sept. 19 that it would reconsider his eligibility and that Speaks would be able to practice and play with the team until it was resolved. DCSAA Director Clark Ray said Thursday that D.C. Public Schools accepted the decision that Speaks was eligible to participate Friday. Since reports of Speaks’ living situation and eligibility surfaced, he has been the subject of many news reports. Not a very vocal person, he doesn’t crave the limelight. He would rather focus on his play. On Friday, his play got a chance to speak for him. Speaks scored Ballou’s first touchdown, and made a catch in the final minute to set his team up to score the winning touchdown. When Friday’s game ended, the lights over Theodore Roosevelt’s field completely and unexpectedly shut off to encourage Ballou to go home. Speaks made a beeline to the team bus. D.C. principal on leave over alleged mocking A principal in D.C. accused of mistreating a student’s sexual assault claim has been placed on leave. Roosevelt High School Principal Aqueelha James was placed on paid leave Thursday. A civil rights lawsuit against James and the D.C. government centers on a June meeting about the assault. The freshman says a boy forced her into a bathroom, kissed her and tried putting a hand up her dress. She left the meeting and her mother followed, leaving behind a device that recorded James mocking the girl’s clothing and saying she planned to “embarrass her ass.” An official says the complaint will be reviewed again. Maryland adds to sweeping gun regulations; several tax hikes begin in the District REGION Maryland will add three laws to its already sweeping gun control regulations today, while shoppers in the District will see their sales and cigarette taxes go up. The provisions are among hundreds of recently passed laws taking effect in the region today. In Maryland, the gun laws — passed in the wake of two mass shootings at high schools this year and the massacre at a Las Vegas concert last year — are designed to limit access to firearms and certain accessories. The state’s “red flag” law allows concerned family members and law enforcement to ask a
judge to temporarily confiscate firearms from gun owners who pose a risk to themselves or others. In February, before 17 people died in the Parkland High School shooting in Florida, five states had such laws. Now, Maryland is among 13 that do, according to Everytown for Gun Safety. Maryland is also banning the sale and possession of bump stocks and other rapid-fire accessories that can make a semiautomatic rifle fire almost as fast as a machine gun. The Las Vegas shooter used a bump stock as he fired on concertgoers, killing 58 people and injuring 500.
In addition, the state now requires gun owners convicted of domestic violence to surrender their firearms. Maryland will also grant state employees the most generous parental leave benefit in the region, giving parents of newborns and newly adopted children as much as 18 weeks off with pay. In the District, the general sales tax increases to 6 percent today from its previous 5.75 percent — part of a plan to pay for the District’s $179 million share of an agreement with Maryland and Virginia to give the Metro transit system dedicated funding. It will be the first time the
bus and rail system has a reliable revenue stream since it opened in 1976. The city’s estate tax exemption will also change to $5.6 million. The District’s exemption level was previously pegged to the federal level, which rose to about $11 million under the Republican tax bill approved by Congress last year. The tax on cigarettes will go up by $2 to $4.94, a 68 percent jump. The legal age for purchase of tobacco is also increasing, from 18 to 21, D.C. Council Secretary Nyasha Smith said. Council poised to undo tipped-wage measure THE DISTRICT D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson, D, said Friday that he has secured enough votes and is moving ahead to overturn a voter-approved minimum wage increase for servers, bartenders and other tipped workers in the nation’s capital. The council is scheduled Tuesday to vote on Mendelson’s emergency legislation to repeal Initiative 77 before it takes effect on Oct. 9. Emergency legislation requires the support of nine of 13 members. Lawmakers on Tuesday will also cast the first of two votes to permanently overturn the ballot measure, which requires a simple majority. But another group of lawmakers is trying to hash out a compromise that could preserve a watered-down version of the law. The District currently allows employers to count gratuities toward the standard minimum wage while paying servers, bartenders and others a base wage of $3.89 an hour. Initiative 77, which passed in June, gradually raises that base wage until it matches the standard minimum wage in 2026. The measure has prompted a fierce debate about whether it wou ld help workers by

guaranteeing reliable income or hurt them by raising labor costs for their employers with the potential result that jobs will be cut or businesses will fail. The prospect of repeal has also sparked a debate about democracy and whether elected officials should be able to ignore the will of voters, particularly in the District, where residents already feel disenfranchised because they lack voting representation in Congress. Mendelson on Friday joined Mayor Muriel Bowser, D, to shore up public support for repeal, with a media event outside Duke’s Grocery in Dupont Circle and a discussion with a small group of workers from high-end restaurants who oppose the law. “Sometimes the council gets it

wrong and sometimes the voters get it wrong, and in both cases the council has the obligation to fix it,” Bowser told reporters. The media event came a day after about 20 clergy and activists staged a sit-in at Mendelson’s office in City Hall and confronted staff in other lawmakers’ offices. They are asking lawmakers to respect the will of voters. “This is urgent. It’s not something we can take lightly,” said the Rev. Graylan Hagler, who led the sit-in, which included protesters singing civil rights favorites. On Friday, Mendelson said he had a discussion with Hagler that focused on the principles of overturning a ballot measure, but not the merits of the new law. FENIT NIR APPIL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

MACEDONIA A referendum on changing Macedonia’s name as part of a deal that would pave the way for NATO membership won overwhelming support Sunday, but low voter turnout highlighted the hurdles that still remain for the Balkan country to join the alliance. Prime Minister Zoran Zaev had hoped for a strong show of support in the referendum on whether to accept a June deal with Greece changing the country’s name to North Macedonia. That would help him with the next step of winning parliamentary support. Results from more than 97 percent of polling stations showed 91.3 percent of voters approving the deal. But turnout was just 36.8 percent, far from the massive support the government wanted. Opponents to the name change had called for a boycott of the vote and celebrated in the street outside Parliament when turnout figures were announced. Zaev said he would seek to secure the required two-thirds majority of the 120-seat parliament by next week for the constitutional changes. In Athens, the Greek foreign ministry noted the “contradictory” result — overwhelming approval along with low turnout

— and said careful moves were needed to “preserve the positive potential of the deal.” If Macedonia’s parliament approves the constitutional amendments, Greece will then also need to ratify it. But Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras faces political problems of his own. His governing coalition partner has vowed to vote against the deal, leaving Tsipras reliant on opposition parties and independent lawmakers. Under the deal, the former Yugoslav republic would amend its name to North Macedonia and Greece would drop its objections to the country joining NATO. The agreement aims to resolve a dispute dating from Macedonia’s declaration of independence from Yugoslavia in the early

1990s. Greece, arguing its new northern neighbor’s name implied territorial ambitions on its own province of the same name, has blocked Macedonia’s efforts to join NATO since then. Opponents painted Sunday’s vote as a clear failure. “The fact is that the agreement with Greece did not receive a green light,” said Hristijan Mickoski, head of the opposition VMRO party. But the government called the referendum non-binding, meaning it can interpret the outcome as a fair reflection of public opinion regardless of turnout. For binding referendums, the Macedonian Constitution requires a minimum turnout of 50 percent of eligible voters to be valid. ELENA BECATOROS AND KONSTANTIN TESTORIDES (AP)
In a rich agricultural basin in southeastern Albania, gas pipeline construction work is offering archaeologists a unique insight into 5,000 years of history. The excavations near the village of Turan, which ended Friday, have unearthed one of the biggest ancient cemeteries in Albania, with about 1,000 layered burials. Under the bottom layer are traces of a rare Neolithic settlement demarcated by holes in the ground that supported the now-rotted wooden skeletons of small huts. Archaeologists found three cemeteries from the Iron Age, late Roman times and the Middle Ages. Grave goods included amber and glass beads, gold coins, medieval wooden caskets and swords. (AP)

Workers with noncompete contracts in Massachusetts will be the first in the U.S. to enjoy a “garden leave” provision allowing them to get paid even after leaving a job. The rule takes effect today. Millions of U.S. workers sign agreements that restrict them for a designated period of time after departing a job from working for competitors or launching potentially competing startups. The new Massachusetts law restricts the contracts to no longer than a year, during which the previous employer must continue paying at least 50 percent of the departed worker’s base salary. (AP)

CULTURE Nobel Prizes are the most prestigious awards on the planet, but the aura of this year’s announcements has been dulled by questions over why so few women have entered the pantheon, particularly in the sciences. The march of Nobel announcements begins today with the physiology/medicine prize. Since the first prizes were awarded in 1901, 892 individuals have received one, but just 48 of them have been women. Thirty of those women won either the literature or peace prize, highlighting the wide gender gap in the laureates for physics, chemistry and physiology/ medicine. Some of the disparity likely can be attributed to underlying structural reasons, such as the low representation of women in high-level science. The American Institute of Physics, for example, says that in 2014, only 10 percent of full physics professorships were held by women. But critics suggest that gender bias pervades the process of nominations, which come largely from male tenured professors. Stung by criticism about the diversity gap among former prize winners, the Nobel Foundation has asked that the science-awarding panels for 2019 ask nominators to consider their own biases in the thousands of letters they send to solicit Nobel nominations.

PALU, INDONESIA The death toll from twin disasters on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi — a major earthquake and the tsunami that followed — jumped to more than 800 on Sunday as rescue workers began to take stock of the wreckage, pulling out survivors buried under the rubble, treating patients and racing to get food and water to survivors. Most of those killed were in the badly hit city of Palu, the spokesman for Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, said Sunday. But just 11 deaths were reported from Donggala, a town of 300,000 that has been largely cut off from rescuers, with poor communications. Officials have warned that the death toll could rise to the thousands. “The death toll is believed to be still increasing since many bodies were still under the wreckage” and others were out of reach, Nugroho said. The dead, he said, either drowned when the tsunami hit or were killed by collapsed buildings and rubble. Photos showed bodies lined up in body bags, as police began the grim task of identifying them and reporting the deaths to families. Victims are being buried in mass graves, but all victims will later be “buried properly,” Nugroho said. A 7.5 magnitude earthquake triggered the massive tsunami on Friday that crashed into Palu, Donggala and the surrounding settlements. Officials on Sunday shared videos and photos of land “liquefaction” in the wake of the disaster, where the soil turns into something akin to quicksand and

Insufficient warning? Questions remain about the apparent failure of a warning system and a tsunami alert that was dropped too quickly. Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency, blamed the rising death toll on a lack of advance warning. Indonesia’s geophysics agency said the agency immediately issued a tsunami warning after the earthquake. The agency estimated the tsunami would occur at 5:22 p.m., but ended the warning at 5:36 p.m., prompting criticism that the warning was lifted too soon. (TWP)

Several were pulled out alive, and rescuers could hear the screams of others throughout the night. A correspondent for a local newspaper said that at least three other hotels with guests in

Midterms grow even uglier WASHINGTON The emotional battle over sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh burst into the midterm elections after a dramatic week of wrenching testimony and raw partisan rage on Capitol Hill, tossing an explosive and sensitive issue into the final weeks of the closely fought campaign for control of Congress. Tight races already hinging largely on how women feel about President Trump have been further roiled by the emotional appearance Thursday by Christine Blasey Ford and the anger-filled response from Kavanaugh. The issue is resonating in two distinct ways: It threatens to further erode support for House Republicans already struggling to survive in centrist suburban districts, while in Senate races it is giving GOP challengers in pro-Trump states a chance to inspire previously unenthusiastic conservatives. In Indiana, for example, the Republican challenger to Democratic Sen. Joe Donnelly, who announced opposition to Kavanaugh following the testimony, released a video over the weekend saying the effort to derail Kavanaugh “tells you how Democrats roll” and calling it a “real eye-opener for folks across Indiana” that Donnelly “takes his

instructions from [Democratic leader] Chuck Schumer.” In heavily pro-Trump West Virginia, where Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin remains undecided on the nomination, Trump used a Saturday night campaign rally to laud Kavanaugh’s “brilliant and really incredible character, quality and courage.” In a nod to the pressure from both sides on Manchin, Trump added: “A vote for Judge Kavanaugh is also a vote to reject the ruthless and outrageous tactics of the Democrat Party.” And in Texas, the Democratic challenger in the 33rd Congressional District near Austin mentioned the Kavanaugh battle at a Saturday campaign event as

At stake, at least in the battle for the Senate, is the power to
block or affirm Trump’s Supreme Court nominees — perhaps even the current one, if Kavanaugh is defeated and an alternative cannot be confirmed before year’s end. Some House Democrats have vowed that, if they win the majority, they would launch an investigation of a Justice Kavanaugh, with impeachment as a potential outcome. What’s certain is that the emotional and cultural debate about Kavanaugh and his accuser has already inflamed the national divide over Trump, himself accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women, that was already driving the cycle. White House: FBI probe can’t be open-ended WASHINGTON The White House has not placed any limits on the FBI investigation into claims of sexual assault leveled against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh but is also opposed to an openended “fishing expedition” that could take a broader look at Kavanaugh’s credibility, two Trump administration officials said Sunday. The statements, made by press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders and presidential counselor Kellyanne Conway in television interviews, followed reports that federal investigators are pursuing allegations made by two women but not a third, Julie Swetnick, who signed a sworn affidavit accusing Kavanaugh of sexually aggressive behavior and being present at parties where gang rapes occurred. President Trump tweeted late Saturday that he wanted the FBI “to interview whoever they deem appropriate, at their discretion.” Sanders said on “Fox News Sunday” that the White House is “not micromanaging this process” but also said an open-ended probe into Swetnick’s claims and whether Kavanaugh may have misled lawmakers in his Senate Judiciary Committee testimony would not be acceptable. “The Senate is dictating the terms. They laid out the request, and we’ve opened it up,” Sanders said, adding, “This can’t become a fishing expedition like the Democrats would like to see it be.” MIKE DEBONIS (TWP)

Nats drop fitting finale ROCKIES 12, NATIONALS 0 As a handful of teams played Sunday to determine their postseason fate, the Nationals played nine innings in Denver that were entirely devoid of meaning to them. In a 12-0 loss to the Rockies, who finished the season tied atop the NL West, the Nationals received a message they have been internalizing for some time: Whatever talent they had on paper this season, the Nationals never looked like a playoff team. Sunday’s ending — one of the few blowouts they’ve experienced — was a fitting end to a season that might as well have been a 162-game reality check. Washington finished the season 82-80, its worst record since 2011. “You play 162 games. It’s a marathon, and it shows you who you are,” general manager Mike Rizzo said. “I think this season has shown us who we are. We’ve earned the record that we have.” Dave Martinez seemed to feel

when he talked about the season, rattling off positives about players and expressing pride that the team never fell apart. But other than Martinez, no overwhelming disappointment gripped the clubhouse. The Nationals already had time to grieve. In Sunday’s game, Victor

It was the type of little mistake that everyone in that clubhouse agreed undid the Nationals this year. “It’s really shown us … that winning in the big leagues isn’t easy,” Rizzo said. “It’s a difficult task. We’ve made it look pretty easy the last seven years.” It wasn’t all negative. For the seventh straight year, the Nats finished with a winning record. Trea Turner led the majors with 43 stolen bases. Juan Soto became the most prolific offensive teenager since Harper, second only to Mel Ott for home runs by a teenager in a season with 22. Anthony Rendon had the best season of his career, hitting .309 with 24 homers and 92 RBIs. Max Scherzer struck out 300 batters. Harper had a monstrous second half to get his first 100-RBI season, just in time for free agency.

98.2% of all enterprises in the U.S. are small businesses with fewer than 100 employees (U.S. Census Bureau, 2015)
They are thriving thanks to a new generation of networked devices, smart workspaces and new ways to innovate, collaborate and engage with customers. However, those tools have exposed small businesses to new threats. While many owners think they are too small to be targeted by cybercriminals, they are in fact a top target because there are so many small businesses and their security measures tend to be less robust than large organizations. Don’t become a cybercrime statistic. Learn how you can protect your business both proactively and reactively, through a mix of technology and educated employees.
Detect, repel and recover from attacks
Secure access to shield your business from hackers Building a shield of robust technology and smart people starts with knowing the threats you face and putting defenses in place that are oriented towards those threats. Just as important as having the right defenses is ensuring they are used correctly – a lock only works on a door that is closed. SECURITY MEASURE: Train your employees. Help them learn to spot fraudulent emails, not click on suspicious links or attachments, use secure passwords and change them frequently. WHY IT’S IMPORTANT: Fraudulent emails are a common first step used to steal passwords or scam an employee. Many viruses come through email or unsafe web browsing. Weak passwords can be guessed in mere hours. SECURITY MEASURE: Use email encryption. Install software to encode emails so that they can’t be read if they are intercepted by a hacker. WHY IT’S IMPORTANT: A great deal of sensitive business information is sent via email,
making it a common target of attacks. Setting it up to encrypt automatically is critical. SECURITY MEASURE: Protect network access and devices. Require logins on your Wi-Fi, network, computers and mobile devices. Use the latest laptops equipped with security-enhancing 8th gen Intel® Core™ i5 vPro™ processors and hardware login security like TPM 2.0 (Trusted Platform Module), fingerprint readers and facial recognition. WHY IT’S IMPORTANT: Unprotected networks and devices offer many opportunities for hackers to get into your shared files and cause harm. SECURITY MEASURE: Use robust anti-virus and firewall solutions. High-quality security solutions are affordable and effective at sniffing out attacks and helping repel them. WHY IT’S IMPORTANT: Attackers change tactics often. Network security systems are best able to keep on top of the latest threats and give you time to react if an attack does get past first-line defenses.

Hackers are creative, tenacious and persistent. The sheer number of cyber attacks shows why small businesses need to be vigilant. Some attacks will get through. If it happens to your business you can still take action as long as you have planned and prepared. PREPARE: Establish a cybersecurity incident plan. By having clearly laid out steps to follow, you eliminate panic and ensure a rapid response to attacks, with everyone working together. WHAT’S INVOLVED: Make sure your employees are trained on what to do if an attack gets through – notifying an established (or preidentified) security lead on your team and dealing with infected devices and files. Ensure the right people know where backups are kept and how to deploy them. BACK EVERYTHING UP: Automatic backups can avert disaster. A reasonable investment in backup technology can ensure business continuity. WHAT’S INVOLVED: Backups often involve software that automatically copies files on protected computers and copies it either to a separate data storage drive at your business or cloud storage, preferably both.
DETECT: Make network monitoring someone’s job. On average, malicious software lives in a network for months before being detected, often because no one looked for it. WHAT’S INVOLVED: Setting up and using antivirus and firewall software. Businesses must also establish policies for reviewing reports, tracking down threats and removing them. REPORT: Call in reinforcements and alert stakeholders. An attack isn’t a time to improvise. Don’t be afraid to ask for help fixing things and make sure customers or other stakeholders know. WHAT’S INVOLVED: Transparency about attacks gets the right people involved to set things straight. You can also educate employees to watch for similar attacks, and your experience may help inform other businesses.

a Ryder Cup on European soil. He lost both his matches in his record 12th Ryder Cup appearance. He also set a more dubious mark with 22 losses. Tiger Woods went 0-4, the first time in his eight Ryder Cups that he went without a single point. Sergio Garcia ended the day in tears. He had failed to qualify for the PGA Tour’s postseason, but Europe’s captain, Thomas Bjorn, picked him anyway. Garcia went 3-1 with a final victory over Rickie Fowler that made Garcia the biggest contributor in Ryder Cup history with 25 ½ points. All that was left to determine was the final score with one match still on the course.

Nancy Travis stops Tim Allen before he can give an interview about his political views.
MUST-SEE THIS WEEK
1 ‘The Neighborhood’ 8 p.m. today on CBS
FOX
The sitcom stars Max Greenfield as the patriarch of a white Midwestern family that relocates to a historically black Los Angeles community, with Cedric the Entertainer playing their grumpy next-door neighbor.
Elephant in the room
‘Last Man Standing’ tries to give the right a voice, but the sitcom just isn’t up to par
TV REVIEW Back from its 2017 cancellation at ABC and now airing at 8 p.m. Friday nights on Fox, “Last Man Standing” stands for another kind of resistance movement, a safe space for viewers who find most TV too left-leaning and the rare Hollywood conservatives who are so oppressed that they can come up with only one, sometimes two, measly sitcoms that are told from their point of view. Though “Last Man Standing” remains hopelessly mediocre, it’s worth taking a moment to put yourself in someone else’s recliner and imagine that every show on TV runs counter to your perception of the world. Tim Allen is one of the names on a rather short list of notable
showbiz conservatives, and “Last Man Standing” — about a man named Mike Baxter (Allen), who works in the corporate offices of an outdoor-sports retail chain and lives in a home of females (his wife and daughters) — seems to be an unimaginative and needlessly regressive exercise in the flattest form of sitcom-making. On the other hand, “Murphy Brown” — a revival that happens to be on the opposite side of the political spectrum — is just better written, more inventive and infused with purpose. But like Candice Bergen’s Murphy, Allen uses Mike mainly as a platform to gripe and opine in snarky bursts — in his case, about the left and his perceived status as an oppressed white male.
$28M
Holding a grudge “Last Man Standing” was picked up by Fox for a seventh season after ABC canceled the sitcom last year. Unchanged in every way that counts (aside from some recasting and redecorating), the show wears itself thin with at-the-camera winks about ABC’s egregious swing of the ax — even if the show did have better ratings than many of its peers. H.S.
The political undertones are present throughout. A daughter studying at the Air Force Academy comes home for a break and immediately clashes with her older sister. “Since when did you get ‘woke’?” the conservative daughter asks the other. “A year
ago, you thought the presidential seal was an actual seal.” After much bickering, the household declares a moratorium on politics. Then and only then does it feel as if “Last Man Standing” is reflecting the reality of most American households, where “don’t ask, don’t tell” has come to refer to the daily news. “Last Man Standing” is no great prize to have won back, but if it fits the bill, then leave it be. But let’s hope for some asyet-unmade comedy or drama that will accurately convey the American conservative experience to a broad audience. After all we’ve been through together (and apart), those who watch it really do deserve better.
2 ‘Private Life’ Friday on Netflix
Writer-director Tamara Jenkins’ first film since 2007’s “The Savages” features Paul Giamatti and Kathryn Hahn as a 40-something couple coping with infertility as they try to start a family.

BOX OFFICE HAUL
The domestic box office haul for “Night School” over the weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday. The comedy drew a diverse audience: 37 percent white, 30 percent African-American and 24 percent Hispanic. The animated release “Smallfoot” trailed in second with $23 million, while “The House With a Clock in Its Walls” finished third with $12.5 million and “A Simple Favor” came in at No. 4 with $6.6 million. The box office take marked a 15.5 percent increase over the same weekend last year. (AP) Chicago blues legend Otis Rush died Saturday at 84

NBC’s “The Good Place focuses on a group of flawed humans in the afterlife and the demon (Ted Danson) tasked with torturing them.

MARC SILVER | BROADCAST MUSE
Morbid curiosities: TV sitcoms believe in life after death TV is really digging into the afterlife. NBC’s sitcom “The Good Place, back for Season 3 (8:30 p.m. Thursdays), is about four not-so-nice people who die in random ways. They think they’re in heaven — only it’s really hell, because everyone knows heaven would not have lots of froyo shops. The Amazon series “Forever, which dropped its full first season last month, is about a couple who seem content with their boring life until — second episode spoiler alert — he dies in a ski accident and she chokes on a nut. Life after death is just as boring. Oscar (Fred Armisen) makes the same trout dish for wife June (Maya Rudolph) and secretly rearranges the flatware she puts in the dishwasher because, to his annoyance, she puts it in bottom end up. “Forever has earned praise, but its charm escapes me. Armisen and Rudolph are muffled and melancholy.

“The Good Life, by contrast, is forking funny (an afterlife quirk is that the F-word turns into “fork). It’s also profound. The four main characters are self-proclaimed “trash bag from Arizona Eleanor (Kristen Bell), dim-witted petty criminal Jason (Manny Jacinto), name-dropping socialite Tahani (Jameela Jamil) and alarmingly indecisive philosophy prof Chidi (William Jackson Harper). Like all of us, they have their faults. But do they deserve eternal damnation? At the end of Season 2, their self-improvement efforts have impressed even the dapper demon Michael (Ted Danson). But it is Michael’s metamorphosis that is the best part of the show. The demon lights up with joy when he sees signs of goodness in Eleanor and her friends — and is gobsmacked by the simple pleasures of earth: “I saw this place that was at once a Pizza Hut and a Taco Bell. I mean, oh, the mind reels! Read Marc’s previous columns at washingtonpost.com/muse

RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS NEEDED If you are currently treated for type 2 diabetes with oral medication and have never used self-injected medication, you may be eligible to participate in this study.
trending “A contestant got engaged on ‘Jeopardy!’ last night and I feel like no proposal will ever be that great. I’m glad I’m already married or else I’d be disappointed.” @LAURANOVICE, reacting to contestant Michael Pascuzzi using his time during the interview segment of the game show to ask his girlfriend, Maria Shafer, if she would marry him. A shocked Shafer said yes, before correcting her response to the format of a “Jeopardy!” answer with “What is ... yes?” Pascuzzi went on to finish the episode in second place.
We are looking for people to take part in a 90–120 minute interview about diabetes medication. The study does not involve treatments. We are interested in your opinions. Study visits will be held in-person in Bethesda, MD.
“Should we check up on the girls who got a tattoo of an infinity symbol in 2014 or should we let them be?” @KAITEASLEY, tweeting about the tattoo design that spiked in popularity between 2009 and 2014. Her tweet soon went viral, and the replies were filled with updates from people who’d acquired the tattoo during that time period or earlier. Many said they had no regrets, while others confessed they were getting the tattoo removed.

TODAY: Go ahead and make your outdoor lunch plans now. In all fairness, it may feel a little warm and humid, but it’s hard to complain after all the rain and clouds we’ve seen. Skies should be mostly sunny through much of the day, although we’re likely to see a few more clouds pop up during the afternoon.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20)
Remaining calm is a necessity today; you’re not likely to impress anyone by letting your emotions get the better of you. CANCER (June 21-July 22) You’ll get more than you deserve today — and less, too, in one regard. You’ll want to make sure things come out more evenly in the future.
