8_hc_d]^Wc" 7bW$ Terrified by Alabama’s strict new immigration crackdown, parents living in the state illegally say they are doing something that was unthinkable just days ago — asking friends, relatives, co-workers and acquaintances to take their children if they’re arrested or deported. Many illegal immigrants signed documents in the past week allowing others to care for their children if needed, assistance groups say, and a couple living illegally in nearby Shelby County extracted a promise from the man’s boss to send their three children — all U.S. citizens — to Mexico should they be jailed under the law. A key sponsor of the measure, state Sen. Scott Beason, said such concerns weren’t raised when legislators were considering the bill, and he wonders whether the stories now are designed to “pull on heartstrings.” But for Maria Patino, even a chance encounter with police could end with her two elementary-age children being left alone or taken to foster care if she and her husband are sent back to Mexico. Both are in the country illegally and have no friends or relatives close enough to

8WYaijeho Alabama’s immigration law was passed by the Republican-controlled Legislature this year and signed by Gov. Robert Bentley. A federal judge blocked some parts of it but allowed key pieces to stand. On Friday, the U.S. Justice Department asked a federal appeals court to block the law, saying it could lead to discrimination against legal residents. However, the law will remain in effect until Nov. 29, when oral arguments are set. (AP)
take in the kids. Social worker Jazmin Rivera helps dozens of Spanish-speaking immigrants fill out paperwork weekly, and many are now seeking legal documents called powers of attorney so friends and others could care for their children. “People are scared, and they want to be sure their kids are safe,” said Rivera, a case manager at the Hispanic Interest Coalition of Alabama. Under the law, police making traffic stops can question anyone suspected of being in the country illegally and jail them without bond if they lack proof of citizenship. Many police agencies say they have yet to begin enforcing the law, because officers haven’t been trained in all of its intricacies. Still, fear runs deep among people living without visas, passports, driver’s licenses and other documents. “Every time I leave, I don’t know if I will come back,” Patino, 27, said through tears. “I can’t stop working. My daughters need shoes and other things.” JAY REE VES (AP)

When a couple threatened to reveal his sexual orientation, he came out to his congregation and resigned because the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) barred homosexuals from serving as ministers. Last year the church’s national assembly voted to remove the ban, clearing the way for Anderson’s ordination. DINESH R AMDE (AP)

Journalist Says He Infiltrated Group Conservative writer admits to escalating D.C. museum protest MWi^_d]jed A conservative journalist has admitted to infiltrating the group of protesters who clashed with security at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum on Saturday — and he openly claims to have instigated the events that prompted the museum to close. Patrick Howley, an assistant editor at the American Spectator, says he joined the group under the pretense that he was a demonstrator: “As far as anyone knew, I was part of this cause — a cause that I had infiltrated the day before in order to mock and undermine in the pages of The American Spectator.” (The language in the story has since been changed.) A group called the October 11 movement had organized the march in order to protest the U.S. government’s use of unmanned drones overseas, joined by a few members of the D.C. branch of the Occupy Wall Street movement. Howley writes

that a small number of protesters — himself included — had tried to move past the security guards at the main entrance of the museum and got pepper-sprayed. But, according to his account, Howley was determined to escalate the protest further. “I wasn’t giving up before I had my story,” he writes. Howley later criticizes the movement as being “disruptive,” even as he personally helped catalyze the shutdown of a national museum. SUZ Y KHIMM (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Witnesses: Military attacks kill at least 19 at Christian sit-in 9W_he
Massive clashes that drew in Christians angry over a recent church attack, Muslims and Egyptian security forces raged over a large section of downtown Cairo Sunday night, leaving at least 19 people dead and more than 150 injured, Health Ministry officials said. It was the worst violence since the 18-day uprising that ousted Hosni Mubarak in February. The ongoing clashes lasted late into the night, bringing out a deployment of more than 1,000 security forces and armored vehicles to defend the state television building along the Nile, where the trouble began. The clashes spread to nearby Tahrir Square, the epicenter of the 18-day uprising, and the area around it, drawing in thousands of people. The Christian protesters said their protest began as a peaceful sit-in at the television building.

Sunday’s rally began in the Shubra district of northern Cairo, then headed to the state television building along the Nile where men in plainclothes attacked about a thousand Christian protesters as they chanted denunciations of Egypt’s military rulers. “The people want to topple the field marshall,” the protesters yelled, referring to the head of the ruling military council, Field Marshall Hussein Tantawi. Some Muslim protesters later joined in the same chant. After hours of intense clashes, chants of “Muslims, Christians one hand, one hand!” rang out in a call for a truce. Magnet for a Movement

ÇJ^[h[ c_]^j X[ iec[j^_d] ^Wff[d_d] ^[h[ j^WjÊi ceh[ j^Wd `kij mWYao$È — BUDDY BOLTON, 43, SPEAKING ABOUT OCCUPY WALL STREET. HE DECIDED TO STAY A FEW DAYS AT THE MOVEMENT’S EPICENTER IN MANHATTAN AND SEE.
HENNY RAY ABRAMS/AP
The three newcomers traveled from across the country, part of the latest wave of aggrieved Americans who hoped their problems might be solved here, at a park in Manhattan that has become a destination for thousands of people who are enraged by unemployment, greed on Wall Street and the increasing wealth gap. What began three weeks ago as a small college protest and then grew into a circus of hippies, misfits and anarchists is now trying to grow again into something else: a populist movement for economic change. The Occupy Wall Street protests have spread to hundreds of cities and towns, including Washington, but the epicenter remains here, riveting the attention of activists, celebrities, labor organizers and President Obama. Now, a movement that started with no concrete goals must decide what to do with some power of its own. Can a leaderless group that relies on consensus find a way for so many people to agree on what comes next? Can it offer not only objections but solutions? Can a radical protest evolve into a mainstream movement for change? Over the weekend, three people came to find out.
Protesters on Saturday march toward Zuccotti Park in Manhattan, the birthplace of the Occupy Wall Street movement.
D[nj Kf5 Although some have criticized Occupy Wall Street for its lack of leadership and its lack of a clear agenda, the protests do have a purpose, said Kalle Lasn, editor-in-chief of Adbusters magazine, the Vancouver, British Columbia-based anti-consumerist magazine that spurred the Occupy Wall Street campaign. It urged people to show up on Wall Street starting Sept. 17 and set up tents and stay for a few months. Lasn Lasn said he hopes the next big protest will happen Oct. 29. The magazine is encouraging people to stage protests in the United States and in cities abroad the weekend before the G-20 summit. The gathering of finance ministers and central bank governors from the 20 largest economies will be held Nov. 3-4 in France. Lasn said that one demand protesters can unite behind is a global financial transaction levy dubbed the Robin Hood tax, which is intended to make the financial sector contribute to fixing the economic crisis it helped create. (THE WASHINGTON POST )
ÉH[Wbbo :_l[hi[ =hekfÊ Brenda Barnes arrived first, from Santa Monica, Calif. The retired lawyer had not participated in a protest since the end of the Vietnam War. Her husband was disabled, and she worried about their fixed income of Social Security and retirement savings. She had hoped Obama might bring stability to the economy and better regulate Wall Street, but now she considered him “the greatest
disappointment of my life — and I’ve been divorced twice.” She had seen news about the protests building in New York and decided she was tired of relying on others to instigate change. “I’m 67,” she said. “What am I waiting for?” Now, as she walked around Zuccotti Park, she discovered a miniature society of a few thousand people. There was a 24-hour dietician,
a hot buffet with donated food, a makeshift library, a self-published newspaper called the Occupy Wall Street Journal, a notary and a lawyer. She text-messaged her husband. “Lots of workers in suits staying,” she wrote. “It’s a really diverse group.”
É7 B_jjb[ 8_j Ekj#J^[h[Ê Diverse was one way to put it. “It’s
a little bit out-there,” said Richard Trumka, the only man in the park wearing a blazer, as he finished a tour of Occupy Wall Street. Trumka, president of the AFLCIO, admitted he wasn’t sure whether the protesters would want his help. Now he was trying to work with a protest movement that resisted leadership, but he believed they could help each other. The protest had generated grassroots momentum like unions rarely could, and the AFL-CIO had power to spread and legitimize the cause through its 11 million members. “Things like this start as a long shot,” he said. But across the square, he saw evidence of an increasing mainstream presence: 14 steelworkers from New Jersey; electricians from Boston; two nurses talking to a priest. “Look, I know there’s some anxiety that we’re going to come in here and take this thing over,” Trumka told a small crowd of protesters. “We’re not going to do that. We just
want to support you.” He planned to assign a full-time AFL-CIO organizer to work with the protesters. “Where are jobs on your guys’ agenda right now?” a protester asked. “First, second and third,” Trumka said. “That’s why we’re here.”
ÉJ^Wj" eh @kij =_l[ KfÊ Buddy Bolton thought he might be able to network and find a job through Occupy Wall Street, so he brought his laptop and clips of his old television work just in case. Everything else that he owned went into storage except for a Coleman sleeping bag and two sets of clothes. “I’ve got enough stuff to stay down here for a few weeks,” he said. Bolton, 43, had been laid off two years earlier after his production company moved to Canada, and he believed he had sent out more than a thousand resumes since. “Not one serious bite,” he said. In the meantime, he had spent his savings on shoulder surgery, lost his apartment in New York and moved in with his girlfriend. The night before, she kicked him out. “It was either come here or go live with my mom down in Florida,” he said. “Pretty great options, huh?” He did not even consider himself to be an activist. But he was desperate and out of options. “I need something to believe in,” he said. “It’s either that, or just give up.” ELI SASLOW (THE WASHINGTON POST )

The federal government has approved Maryland’s proposed Purple Line for more detailed engineering. The go-ahead is a necessary step in moving the project forward and means officials can fine-tune cost estimates and construction schedules and finalize environmental studies, state officials said. The federal government grants state transit planners permission to proceed from one stage of planning and design to the next as part of a multiyear “New Starts” competition for federal construction money. The 16-mile line would originate in Bethesda and travel through Silver Spring and College Park to the New Carrollton transit hub in
Prince George’s County. The light rail line, which would feature 21 stops, would travel mostly along surface streets and be powered by overhead wires.
M^eÊbb FWo \eh ?j5 The state’s financial plan assumes that the federal government will cover half — or $962 million — of the construction costs for the Purple Line, but the question of how to pay for the rest of the project remains. (T WP)
“This action by the Federal Transit Administration will help us expand rapid and reliable transportation in the Washington suburban region as part of our larger effort to create the next generation of transit in Maryland,” Gov. Martin O’Malley said in a statement. Maryland has deferred hundreds of millions of dollars in transportation projects in recent years because of a lack of money. The state also recently decided to raise
tolls statewide to help confront its deteriorating transportation infrastructure and a paucity of funds to make improvements. However, officials said in their announcement last week that construction on the Purple Line could start in 2015 with service beginning in 2020. “Moving the Purple Line into this next stage is an important step towards finally getting shovels in the ground and workers on the job so that thousands in Prince George’s and Montgomery County, particularly federal employees, can stop wasting time, money and gas in gridlock,” said Sen. Benjamin L. Cardin, a Democrat. This summer the federal government also gave Maryland permission to move ahead with engineering of a 14.5-mile Red Line in Baltimore, which would cost $2.2 billion. Both proposals are projects of the Maryland Transit Administration. MICHAEL D. BOLDEN (THE WASHINGTON POST )

around the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s holidays. Instead, the agency said Thursday it will pursue “an aggressive schedule of rebuilding work” before the season. There will be no major track work on the rail system over the four-day Thanksgiving weekend. There will also be no work between Dec. 19 and Jan. 3, officials said. (THE WASHINGTON POST )

But the cleaning companies that employ the workers say they’re still struggling because of the shaky economy. They say the current wages and benefits were agreed to in 2007, when the economy was in much better shape. They’re asking to maintain the current contract, at least for one year. Mortarboard Math 101 New calculators offer ways to pin down all college cost estimates
The number of colleges the College Board has helped set up with price calculators. Students who enter data in one can use the calculators on any school using the College Board system. (AP)
J[ij 9Wi[ Take the example of a fictional Massachusetts family, the Medians, choosing between the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, the state’s public flagship institution, or Amherst College, an elite private liberal arts school two miles down North Pleasant Street.
7Zl_Y[
First Glance: The state school looks like the obvious choice: the UMass-Amherst lists total yearly costs — including room, board, books and other expenses — at $22,408 per year. Amherst College’s total costs are $57,348. Doing the math: But then The AP went to the schools’ net-price calculators and entered some financial assumptions for the Medians befitting their surname: median Massachu-
ISTOCK
It sounds like a simple question: How much is a college actually going to cost? In fact, it’s a slippery one. But thanks to a federal mandate, a new tool to help students and families pin down an answer is finally arriving this month: a fairly simple online calculator to estimate what you can expect to pay to attend any college in the United States. The new “net price calculators” — many already up and running on college websites ahead of the Oct. 29 legal deadline — are designed to provide the non-binding cost estimates based on a few relatively straightforward questions about family finances. More broadly, they’re supposed to help students navigate one of the most confusing aspects of the col-
)&&
lege matchmaking process. While a school’s “list price” is usually easy enough to identify, students often don’t hear until long after they’ve applied and received acceptance letters what will be their “net price” — the sometimes substantially lower cost after scholarships and
discounts are applied. Now colleges are obliged to make the estimating calculators publicly available on their websites. Supporters predict two main effects, both positive. Some families may be surprised how much college will still cost them, but at
setts family income (around $64,000), treading water on a house with the median state value, an older sibling already attending UMass-Amherst, a small amount of savings and a 5 percent retirement plan contribution. The results: After financial aid is factored in, private Amherst College would be substantially cheaper, with a total bill of $5,798 at the private college compared to $12,614 at the state one. (AP)
least they’ll know more accurately which schools are affordable and how much they need to save. Other families, meanwhile, may be pleasantly surprised by the discounts and won’t cross off potential matches for fear they’re unaffordable.
“For those of us who are higher cost, we get ruled out right off the bat,” said Linda Parker, director of financial aid at Union College in New York. “When they find out we have pretty generous scholarships we offer, and we meet full demonstrated need for the students we admit, it’s not out of their reach.” When Congress forced all institutions that receive federal dollars to start developing the calculators in 2008, most were opposed. But since then, opposition has mellowed into grudging acceptance and even enthusiasm. “It’s not too far-reaching, and it does provide a good tool for parents and students of college-bound people to get a sense of what their bottom-line cost will be,” said Daniel Lugo, head of financial aid at Franklin and Marshall College in Pennsylvania. Running back Fred Jackson and an opportunistic Buffalo Bills defense combined to defeat the slow-starting, underachieving and turnover-prone Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. Jackson finished with a combined 196 yards from scrimmage and scored on a 5-yard run in a 31-24 victory. Linebacker Nick Barnett had two of Buffalo’s four interceptions. After scoring on a 31-yard interception return in the second quarter, Barnett sealed the victory by grabbing Michael Vick’s tipped pass intended for Jason Avant with 1:49 remaining at the Bills’ 26. the game and overcome a 21-point second-half deficit. The Bills took over and never gave the ball back. The game was decided on — what else? — another Eagles miscue.
Facing fourth-and-inches at midfield with 1:23 left, Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick was successful in getting Eagles defensive end Juqua Parker to jump offside. That gave Buffalo a new set of
downs and a chance to run out the clock after Philadelphia had used up its timeouts. The Bills (4-1) bounced back from blowing a 14-point lead in a 23-20 loss at Cincinnati last weekend. Buffalo has matched its best start since 2008. Vick went 26 of 40 for 315 yards passing and two touchdowns but was undone by a career-worst four interceptions. He added 90 yards rushing to give him 4,948 for his career, passing Randall Cunningham for the most yards by an NFL quarterback. Philadelphia has lost four in a row — it’s longest skid since 2005 — and is off to its worst start since 1999, coach Andy Reid’s first season. JOHN WAWROW (AP)

As the Detroit Tigers prepared to play the New York Yankees in Game 4 of the American League Division Series last Tuesday night at Comerica Park, a handful of Detroit Lions players made their way to their seats and were immediately gripped by versions of the same thought: This was the atmosphere all professional athletes crave. “It was crazy,” wide receiver Calvin Johnson said. “The game hadn’t even started, but it was already bonkers in there.” Not far away, veteran wide receiver Nate Burleson was sounding jealous tones, lamenting the Lions’ own hype deficit in recent years — the local television blackouts and the national invisibility: “Sometime our games aren’t even shown on the highlights on ESPN,” Burleson said, shaking his head. But all the Lions had to do to
remember how far they have come and what lies in store for them was to look over their left shoulders. Next door to the baseball stadium, Ford Field, the Lions’ own 65,000-seat coliseum, sat dark at that moment. But in a matter of days, it would be the center of the NFL universe. On Monday night, the Lions, 4-0 on the season for the first time in three decades, will host the Chicago Bears in the franchise’s first “Monday Night Football” game since 2001. A team that hasn’t had a winning season since 2000 and that just three years ago endured the only 0-16 campaign in NFL history, has officially arrived. “To come from where we’ve been, to now being on, really, an international stage — it’s going to be exciting,” Burleson said. “It’s the closest thing guys are going to get to the playoffs who haven’t been.” DAVE SHEININ (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Tigers’ Ordonez Out
A fan has been arrested for running toward the seventh green and throwing a hot dog in the direction of Tiger Woods during the final round of the Frys.com Open in San Martin, Calif. Dan Diggins, head of security for Frys, says the man immediately dropped to the ground and allowed himself to be arrested. Diggins did not reveal the man’s name. Woods was about to putt when it happened. Players said the bun fell well short of where Woods was standing, and the hot dog went onto the green. Woods resumed his putting as if nothing had happened, although he missed the putt. (AP)
Magglio Ordonez will miss the rest of the postseason because of an ankle injury, the second Detroit Tigers outfielder out of the AL championship series. Manager Jim Leyland says Ordonez is having problems with the right ankle that he broke last season, an injury that caused him to miss more than a month this summer. Leyland said Sunday that Ordonez will be replaced on the ALCS roster. Ordonez came out of Saturday’s opener after the second of two rain delays in the fifth inning. Ordonez drew a walk during a short resumption of play between the delays but was replaced. (AP)

Producing Results Sessions for “Ceremonials” began in early 2010, with just two people present: Welch and Paul Epworth, who co-wrote three tracks on “Lungs” and produced four of its finest cuts. Keen to avoid the disjointed nature of her debut, which featured four producers, Welch asked Epworth to take the producer’s chair. “That was a real specific thing: I wanted to work in one place with one producer,” Welch says. by Paul Epworth, riding high with his work on Adele’s all-conquering “21,” the 12-track record is a more confident, bigger and better version of the celebrated “Lungs.” That set went on to sell 3.5 million units worldwide, according to Universal. Domestic sales stand at 738,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan, with the album’s breakout track, “Dog Days Are Over,” racking up 1.8 million downloads. Universal is optimistic that “Ceremonials” will knock those achievements out of the park. “We’ve got incredibly high expectations,” says Universal Republic president/CEO Monte Lipman. Welch offers a more modest assessment. “I’m excited to play it live, but I am nervous about what the reaction to the record is going to be,” she says. “It’s taken the sound that I found about halfway through making ‘Lungs’ and really gone with it. I think I have taken it to the apex.”

Titled “Ceremonials” and due out Nov. 1, Florence and the Machine’s second studio set is a muscular, ambitious and achingly beautiful work that takes its predecessor’s sonic blueprint (soaring vocals, ethereal gospel choirs, mystical harps and pounding tribal drums) and fires it to the stars. then the diary got sent to me and I looked at it and just went, ‘No. No. No. No. No! I can’t do that. This is too weird. I can’t just suddenly leave behind everything that made [2009 debut album] ‘Lungs.’” Welch, 25, chose to follow her heart over her head. And the choice has paid off handsomely.

Those who mourned the passing of Shaw’s Tavern can rejoice that the neighborhood has another new bar already, and this one is actually allowed to serve beer. Boundary Stone (116 Rhode Island Ave. NW) has DC Brau and Dogfish Head (among other beers) on draft, along with a vegetarian-friendly menu of pub food.
The offer was highly tempting, but ultimately not tempting enough, confesses Florence Welch, the flame-haired siren who fronts Florence and the Machine. About 18 months ago, when the Grammy Award-nominated Brit was in the early stages of prepping her eagerly anticipated second album, the idea of going to Los Angeles to work with some of the hottest writer-producers on the planet was dangled before her. “I love Lady Gaga, and I love Katy Perry and R&B and rap music,” Welch says. “I love big, American pop music. I’m a total sucker for it. And I was, like, ‘Yeah, OK. Maybe I could bring my own take on it.’ It got put in the diary to go out [to L.A.] for a week, to start writing the new record. And

It’s Columbus Day, so in that spirit, we recommend trips to neighboring cities where you tell everyone there that their land is now yours and that they all have to work in mines. The most logical place to try this is Baltimore, partly because it’s next door and partly because Baltimore Beer Week (Baltimorebeerweek.com) is happening through Oct. 16 and you can hit up beer 8o <_edW dinners, beer tastings PkXb_d and happy hours while you’re in town. One column can’t possibly detail all the events, but here are a couple that look exciting. On Tuesday, Red Brick Station (8149 Honeygo Blvd., Baltimore) will host $1 beer day: Starting at 11 a.m., all beer except specialty ales will be $1. On the other end of the monetary spectrum is Tuesday’s Flying Dog Beer Dinner at Alewife (21 N. Eutaw St., Baltimore), a seven-course, mostly seafood meal that features Flying Dog pairings and comes with an $80 price tag. Dinner starts at 6:30 p.m. (call 410-545-5112 for reservations) and will be accompanied by a display of art by Ralph Steadman, who illustrated many of Hunter S. Thompson’s books and articles.

L_Z[e =Wc[ H[l_[m “Wolfenstein.” “Doom.” “Quake.” They’re landmark video game titles, and they defined an entire genre: the first-person shooter. The studio that created them, Dallas-based id Software, has returned with “Rage” (Bethesda, for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, $59.99), and it hasn’t lost its touch for trigger-happy mayhem. “Rage” takes place in the sort of post-disaster wasteland that has become cliche. In 2029, the hero was put into suspended animation before an asteroid struck Earth. When he awakens centuries later, the surface has been overrun by bandits, mutants and cannibals. “Rage” doesn’t skimp on opportunities to fill your enemies with lead. You can run screaming into a firefight, flinging grenades and automatic weapons fire every which way. Or you can take a more cau-

tious approach, taking out foes one by one with sniper bullets. While the weapons don’t get too exotic, they’re well differentiated. You can also build turrets and sentry robots, valuable sidekicks when foes become too much for your lone gunman. There are only a few enemy types, but they come after you in many ways. The animation and artificial intelligence are terrif-
ic, making all your antagonists seem like living (and dying) creatures with their own unpredictable attack patterns. At its core, “Rage” is a series of environments — caverns, a factory, a prison — filled with things to shoot. Still, other activities prevent the game from feeling like one long trudge toward the inevitable. You get access early on to a dune buggy equipped with guns and
homing rockets, and it’s a kick to chase bandit vehicles around the wasteland. There are also several gambling events and side jobs that you can take on for cash. You don’t really have much choice in determining how the story unfolds, and the ending — blatantly written to set up a sequel — arrives abruptly. Still, the game is a lot of fun. Bring on “Rage 2.” LOU KESTEN (AP)
ÉMee#>ee"Ê 9h_i_i 7l[hj[Z0 Fans of “The Simpsons” can breathe a “d’oh!” of relief: The animated series was renewed Friday for two more seasons. A contract dispute with the show’s voice cast had threatened to end the series, but Fox announced it will air through seasons 24 and 25. The animated series about the Simpson family is TV’s longest-running scripted nighttime series. The terms of the cast’s new deal were not announced. (AP)
Former Weezer bass player Mikey Welsh, who also found success as a painter, died in a Chicago hotel room, police said Sunday. A Chicago police spokeswoman said Welsh was supposed to check out of the Raffaello Hotel at 1 p.m. Saturday. When he didn’t, hotel staff entered his room and found him unconscious Welsh and not breathing, the spokeswoman said. The cause of death was undetermined pending toxicology tests, according to an autopsy performed Sunday by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. Test results could take up to six weeks, authorities said. Police said there was nothing to indicate foul play. Welsh, 40, of Burlington, Vt., performed with Weezer from 1998 to 2001, leaving after a nervous breakdown, according to the band’s website. Weezer posted a message on the site, saying Welsh’s time with the band was “vital, essential, wild, and amazing.” (AP)

Monday and Tuesday’s shows are both pay what you can, so you can afford to catch “Boise” before the big day. Ghost Hostess Mary Surratt, famous for being the first woman executed by the federal government (for her role in the Lincoln assassination), is now a ghost. That’s the premise of the National Building Museum’s Ghost Tour, anyway. It’s led by Ms. Surratt, who’s at least corporeal enough to carry a lantern as she describes the NBM’s various hauntings. National Building Museum, 401 F St. NW; 8 p.m., preregistration required, $20; 202-272-2448, Nbm.org. (Judiciary Square)
Swamp and Circumstance Perhaps it’s “True Blood” withdrawal — OK, it definitely is — but we’re totally enamored of Chicago duo Redgrave’s bluesy swamp rock. Angie Mead and Stephen Howard’s music is noisier than you’d think a guitar-drums-vocals combo could be and has lots of snarling and growling. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You’re likely to do much for another, without thought for yourself. The time will come for you to tend to your own desires as well. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You are tempted to enter into an agreement with someone who seems to know how to help you — and him — to more money. Is this for real? SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) It’s a good day to get back in touch with someone who has been out of the picture for quite awhile. You’ll pick up where you left off. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You must be willing to follow the rules, or you will very likely be asked to remove yourself from the game — and you don’t want that. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Your attempts to circumvent authority will only result in confusion — and, ultimately, failure. Follow the proper channels.

For millions of adults like you, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a daily struggle, robbing you of the deep restful sleep you need to get through your day. Untreated OSA is also associated with an increased risk of death and serious health conditions, including high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, diabetes, and stroke. Right now, sleep specialists at The Center for Sleep & Wake Disorders in Chevy Chase are conducting a research study of an investigational device for obstructive sleep apnea that may help. If you have OSA, and haven’t had lasting success with CPAP or other treatments, this study may be right for you.

Just a few of the ways Wells Fargo is here forWashington, D.C.
Wells Fargo and Wachovia share a common legacy of local investment, and now that we’re one team, we’re able to create more economic growth and prosperity for the people we serve. In 2010, we invested $219 million in 19,000 nonprofits nationwide, surpassing $200 million for the third year in a row. That’s an average of $600,000 every single day to nonprofits supporting education, community development, human services, the arts, and the environment. Here in Washington, D.C., we are proud to support local nonprofit organizations like the D.C. College Access Program, Hope and a Home, Capital Area Food Bank, and the Greater Washington Urban League. Wells Fargo’s contribution to organizations like these is just one of the ways we’re with you in Washington, D.C., today and in the future.
