If you got incessant calls last week from a hospital for Hawaiian monk seals, you might be surprised who was on the line. Veterinarian Claire Simeone was at lunch when she got a call from the Big Island hospital she directs. Fifteen calls followed, and she wasn’t the only one getting them. She found the culprit in a lab at the hospital: a gecko, perched on a phone, calling everyone in the recent call history with, she tweeted, “HIS TINY GECKO FEET!” (AP)
A runner struck by a deer 10 miles into her 13.1-mile race still crossed the finish line. Christina Sanchez was running the Jersey Shore Half Marathon on Sunday when a large buck took her out. Sanchez said it dashed out of the woods and struck her in a “blur of brown and white fur,” knocking her over. Emergency personnel encouraged her to finish the race. She finished about 10 minutes behind her goal time, but she says she wasn’t going to quit. (AP)

Patron’s support endures CULTURE Peggy Cooper Cafritz’s support for the Duke Ellington School of the Arts went beyond her checkbook. She attended events at the school she co-founded, purchased artwork by its faculty and students and hosted dinners at her home to nurture a community of creativity. Cafritz died in February at age 70, but her contributions to the school will live on. The activist and educator bequeathed a third of her renowned art collection, or about 200 works, to the high school. The balance of the collection is going to the Studio Museum in Harlem, a champion of artists of African descent. The donation announced Monday — said to be the largest gift ever of contemporary works by artists of African descent — will raise the profiles of both institutions. “This is huge, absolutely huge,” said Tia Powell Harris, chief executive of the performing arts school. “There are pieces created by faculty members, by alumni

that we will be receiving back. These pieces have traveled with the rest of Peggy’s collection, and now they’re coming home.” Those who knew Cafritz were not surprised by the gift. “She was always very clear that her collection was not only important to her, but it had to live beyond her,” said Hank Willis Thomas, a 1994 Duke Ellington graduate whose work Cafritz began buying long after he had graduated. The Cafritz art will serve as a teaching tool, but also will elevate the school’s stature as a cultural institution, Harris said. “We’re spreading out into the greater community of Washington and beyond,” she said. Studio Museum Director Thelma Golden said the Cafritz gift will strengthen the Harlem museum’s 2,000-piece collection. “Peggy’s eye, her vision for her collection, is in many ways completely in communion with the values of the Studio Museum,” Golden said. “Her support of artists early in their career and her commitment to their work throughout their career is incredibly admirable.” The gift comes as the museum is celebrating its 50th anniversary and planning for a major expansion. “We’re in the moment of expanding . . . to serve the arts and artists of Harlem for 50 more years and beyond,” Golden said. “This gift looks back on our past, but it also . . . is a gift that begins to think about the future. Hogan holds his strong lead Enthusiasm for GOP in Md. doesn’t extend to legislature, poll finds
Metro’s GM: No fare hikes for next fiscal year
PATRICK SEMANSKY (AP)
MARYLAND With less than a month until Election Day, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan has built a formidable lead over Democratic challenger Ben Jealous, with few voters undecided and most preferring the incumbent Republican even on key Jealous policy issues such as health care and education, a new Washington Post-University of Maryland poll finds. Likely voters in Maryland support Hogan by a 20-point margin, 58 percent to 38 percent. Just 5 percent have not settled on a candidate. In a state where Democrats outnumber Republicans more than 2 to 1, Hogan appears to have assembled a coalition that cuts into the Democratic base, giving him a clear advantage over Jealous in bellwether Baltimore County and running competitively in heavily Democratic Montgomery. Jealous leads Hogan in only one of Maryland’s major geographic blocs — Prince George’s County. “If [Jealous] hasn’t gotten through just yet, I don’t see how there’s much room at this point” for him to do it in the next month, said Michael Hanmer, research director for the Center for American Politics and Citizenship at the University of Maryland. “The level of support for Hogan, even among registered Democrats, is extremely high.”
Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan speaks to reporters last month after a debate with Democratic candidate Ben Jealous.
Maryland’s gubernatorial contest is an outlier in a mid-term election dominated by races between GOP candidates aligned with President Trump and antiTrump Democrats. Jealous is one of three Democrats competing to be the first African-American to govern their states this year. But unlike Stacey Abrams in Georgia and Andrew Gillum in Florida, who face non-incumbent, proTrump Republicans, Jealous has run an uphill campaign against a well-liked governor who has distanced himself from Trump. Hogan’s support does not seem to be providing much benefit for other Republicans running for statewide office. A Goucher College poll conducted last month
Jealous: Hogan’s a bully Maryland Democratic gubernatorial nominee Ben Jealous accused Gov. Larry Hogan of “bullying” him with the release of a campaign video that mocks him for several gaffes, including one where he said he is running for governor of Virginia. Jealous said on Tuesday the mistakes were due to the stutter he has had since he was a child, which at times involves saying a different word than what he intended to say. “These ads are bullying,” Jealous said. “It is a new low in Maryland politics.” A Hogan campaign spokesman said the video is not mocking Jealous for his stutter but instead is pointing out “embarrassing” mistakes during the campaign. (TWP)
found Republican U.S. Senate candidate Tony Campbell trailing Democratic incumbent Ben Cardin by 56 percent to 17 percent. The Post-U. Md. poll also finds that if Hogan wins re-election, 57 percent of voters would rather see the Maryland legislature controlled by Democrats, “to act as a check on Hogan,” rather than Republicans, “to support Hogan’s agenda.” Democrats are virtually certain to maintain majority support in the state legislature, though Republicans are hoping to overcome Democrats’ supermajority, which enables them to easily override Hogan’s vetoes. Michael may brush the region
expressline
Dangerous Hurricane Michael, making a beeline for Florida’s northern Gulf Coast today, will continue heading northeast Thursday — on a path into the Mid-Atlantic. The latest models track Michael, which will transition to a weakening tropical storm, through eastern North Carolina and ultimately southeastern Virginia before scooting out to sea on Friday. This path means the D.C. area is most likely to get brushed by the northern fringe of Michael’s rains Thursday and Thursday night, but the core should pass a good distance to our southeast. (TWP)

TRANSPORTATION Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld will not propose fare hikes or more service cuts for the coming fiscal year, he said Tuesday, and will instead focus on improving customer service and workplace culture to help boost flagging ridership and revenue. The announcement, contained in budget documents released Tuesday in advance of a presentation at Thursday’s board meeting, is significant because Metro protocol is to consider fare increases every two years. Fares were increased in 2017; service was also cut. “The parameters I gave the staff was ‘come back with a budget that does not impact the customer as much as we can’ ” Wiedefeld said Tuesday. “How do we start to generate revenue? And obviously it’s going to be by focusing on ridership and the ridership experience.” Wiedefeld also acknowledged service is one of the key factors impacting ridership, but he was unwilling to weigh in on whether the agency should add service ahead of the release of his budget proposal this fall. Increasing service is the most surefire way to grow ridership, according to internal and external analysis. “It’s all about service,” Wiedefeld said. “You could have a very clean station or bright station, but if you’re standing down there waiting for a train to come that doesn’t matter very much to you.” FAIZ SIDDIQUI (TWP)

Va.’s Lafayette River earns ‘restored’ status for oysters
Five people, including four students at a local high school who were waiting at a bus stop, were hurt when a car drove off the road and into the group of students on the sidewalk Tuesday morning in the Aspen Hill area of Montgomery County. The students attend John F. Kennedy High School, which is about 3 miles from the crash site. An official said three students suffered injuries that were not life-threatening, and one was listed in critical condition. Police said an initial probe found that two cars — a blue Ford and a white Volkswagen — collided on Georgia Avenue; the VW then went onto the sidewalk. (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Baltimore’s interim police commissioner won’t be seeking the post on a permanent basis. City Solicitor Andre Davis said Tuesday that Commissioner Gary Tuggle voluntarily withdrew from consideration for the post. More than 50 applicants are seeking the appointment. Davis disclosed Tuggle’s decision at a judicial hearing. A federal investigation found widespread unconstitutional and discriminatory practices in the police department. Tuggle is the third person to hold the top post in the police department this year. The city expects to pick a new commissioner by the end of the month. (AP)
The Lafayette River has become the first of five Virginia rivers to have its oyster population recover, having met state and federal goals. Virginia and Maryland entered into the Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement in 2014, with the goal of restoring “native oyster habitat and populations in 10 tributaries by 2025.” But restoring the oyster population is just a piece of a larger effort to improve the health of the bay’s tidal rivers. Chris Moore of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation says observers are noting biodiversity that hasn’t been seen for some time. A river in Maryland earned the same recovered status earlier this year. (AP)

Marshals’ flaw: A glitch in tracking munitions No matter how hard he tries, Uncle Sam can’t stop his cops from losing track of their guns and ammunition. The U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) is the latest example of a recurring problem that has long vexed federal law enforcement. A new report by the Justice Department’s inspector
general “identified significant deficiencies related to tracking weapons, ammunition, and less lethal munitions, as well as noncompliance with ammunition policy requirements. One startling stat: The Marshals Service had not tracked nearly 2.45 million rounds of ammunition before the audit. Inspector General Michael Horowitz made it clear the Marshals Service “generally had strong physical controls
over its weapons, munitions, and explosives during the period of the audit, fiscal year 2015 through June 2018. That’s good, but not good enough. Of 18 USMS sites studied, the audit said “16 did not fully comply with the USMS’s ammunition tracking and inventory requirements. The Marshals Service has almost 30,000 weapons, so the reported loss or theft of less than two dozen over several years is barely noticeable. But only nine of those have been recovered. Two were left in courthouse restrooms. The bulk of the 23 were stolen or missing from government or personal vehicles.
MANUEL BALCE CENETA (AP)
federalworkforce
Inspector General Michael Horowitz’s office cited failings in USMS’ tracking of munitions.
USMS agreed with a series of recommendations to help the agency keep better track of its munitions. The inspector general’s recommendations
include implementing centralized procedures for entering weapons in the property management system and for tracking the status of lost and stolen guns. A statement from the Marshals Service to The Washington Post said its training divisions “reminded all USMS districts and divisions of the requirement to use ammunition registers to track all ammunition. Additionally, the OIG found no loss of ammunition. It’s a requirement that should not need a reminder. Follow Joe Davidson on Twitter @joedavidsonWP

A worker boards up a building in Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., as the state prepares for Hurricane Michael to hit land.
Category 3 Michael barrels toward Florida Evacuations ordered as forecasters predict storm surge of 13 feet WEATHER A fast and furious Hurricane Michael sped toward the Florida Panhandle on Tuesday with 120 mph winds and a potential storm surge of 13 feet, giving tens of thousands of people precious little time to get out or board up. Drawing energy from the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, the storm strengthened rapidly into a potentially devastating Category 3 by Tuesday evening. It was expected to blow ashore around midday Wednesday near Panama City Beach. Michael developed into a

hurricane on Monday, and by Tuesday, more than 180,000 people were under mandatory evacuation orders. Florida Gov. Rick Scott warned it was a “monstrous hurricane,” and his Democratic opponent for the Senate, Sen. Bill Nelson, said a “wall of water” could cause destruction along the Panhandle. “Don’t think that you can ride this out if you’re in a low-lying area,” Nelson said on CNN. But some officials were worried by what they weren’t seeing — a rush of evacuees. “I am not seeing the level of traffic on the roadways that I would expect when we’ve called for the evacuation of 75 percent of this county,” Bay County Sheriff Tommy Ford said.
Mandatory evacuation orders went into effect in Panama City Beach and other low-lying areas, including Pensacola Beach. Forecasters said parts of the Panhandle and Florida’s marshy, lightly populated Big Bend area — the crook of Florida’s elbow — could see 9 to 13 feet of storm surge. Michael could dump up to a foot of rain over some Panhandle communities before its remnants go back out to sea by way of the Mid-Atlantic states. Forecasters said it could bring 3 to 6 inches of rain to Georgia, the Carolinas and Virginia, triggering flash flooding in a corner of the country still recovering from Hurricane Florence. Canadian checks pocket, wins lottery Montreal man Gregorio De Santis bought a lottery ticket last December, then tucked it away in a jacket pocket and forgot about it. Winter slid into spring, followed by summer. At some point, De Santis’ sister urged him to clear out his old clothes and donate them, leading him to find the ticket in a pocket. On Friday, he checked and learned that he was the winner of an unclaimed $1.35 million. It nearly gave him a heart attack, De Santis said. Winning tickets are valid for up to a year after the drawing, according to Loto-Quebec’s rules — so De Santis had only about two months left before his prize was gone forever. De Santis said he will use the money to finance his retirement and take his nephew to some hockey games. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Haley to leave U.N. role
POLITICS In the latest shake-up for President Trump’s turbulent administration, U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley abruptly announced Tuesday she is resigning at the end of the year, raising fresh questions about the Trump team and about the outspoken diplomat’s own political ambitions. The news blindsided some key U.S. allies and many congressional Republicans involved in foreign policy matters. And it came less than a month before congressional elections, thwarting White House efforts to project an image of stability, with the loss of one of the highest-profile women in the administration at a time when women’s votes are being vigorously pursued. But Haley, the former South Carolina governor, has often been an unpredictable force in the Trump administration. At times she has offered strikingly different perspectives on world events from her more isolationistminded boss. A smiling Haley announced her decision at an Oval Office meeting alongside Trump, bringing up her own political prospects even as she underscored her continued support for Trump. Without prompting from reporters, she said she had no plans to run for president “in 2020” and would campaign for Trump. Haley, who is 46 and not personally wealthy, hinted in her resignation letter to Trump that she is headed to the private sector. Haley has one child in college and another approaching college age, and she has the potential to make much more money in the business world. “I have given everything I’ve got these last eight years,” she said, referring to her six years as governor as well as her time

U.S. ambassador’s surprise departure adds to administration’s record turnover rate

at the U.N. “And I do think it’s good to rotate in other people who can put that same energy and power into it.” Trump was asked why the announcement was made now since Haley is staying until the end of the year. Instead of answering directly, he recounted how she has had to work on tough issues, such as Iran and North Korea. White House officials had sought to put a hold on Trump’s record-setting turnover in the run-up to the Nov. 6 elections, with aides being asked months ago to step down or commit to staying through Election Day to
Who will replace Haley? President Trump said Tuesday he was considering many candidates for U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley’s job and that a successor would be named in two to three weeks — or sooner. Among those under consideration, Trump said, is former deputy national security adviser Dina Powell. Trump said he has heard his daughter Ivanka Trump’s name discussed for the post, but said if he selected her he’d be accused of nepotism. U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell’s name has also been floated for the role, according to a senior administration official. (AP)

avoid adding to a sense of turmoil. A number of officials speculated that the timing was meant to preserve the ambassador’s own political future. A post in the Trump administration has proven to be a rickety steppingstone to either lucrative private sector work or hopes for higher office, and the risk to those ambitions might only increase after the elections if Democrats make significant gains in Congress. Trump said Haley first discussed leaving with him six months ago. A senior official noted that their conversation coincided with the appointments of Mike Pompeo as secretary of state and John Bolton as national security adviser in an earlier upending of top foreign policy officials. Haley had expressed some frustration that her voice had been diminished as the two men became the aggressive new faces of Trump’s international policy, the official said. More recently, there was the awkward moment at the U.N., when Trump’s boasting of American economic strength under his leadership brought laughter at a General Assembly session. He later said that the delegates were laughing with him, not at him. The timeline also coincides with a high-profile spat between Haley and the White House in April, when she drew the president’s ire for previewing in a television appearance the administration’s planned imposition of a new round of sanctions on Russia. When the sanctions never materialized, White House officials said the plans had changed without Haley being briefed, and economic adviser Larry Kudlow suggested she was confused. “I don’t get confused,” Haley responded. WASHINGTONPOST.COM THE FIX
Rep.: Haley’s exit ‘doesn’t smell right’ Nikki Haley is resigning as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. And the timing is raising eyebrows. Haley said her resignation was simply about needing a break after six years as South Carolina governor and two at the U.N., and President Trump said Haley even previewed a desire to leave as long as six months ago. The two were obviously eager to downplay the idea that this was hasty. But if it wasn’t, that might make the timing even odder. If this was long planned, it was apparently one of the best-kept secrets in a very leaky White House. The news reportedly blindsided those in the foreign policy establishment and even members of Haley’s staff. What’s more, the White House is effectively announcing the exit of its most popular Cabinet official — one who has strong approval among both Republicans and Democrats — just before voters vote. The announcement also comes a day after a watchdog group, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, called for an investigation into Haley’s use of private travel on the government’s dime. Rep. Mark Sanford, R-S.C., raised that story and other ideas with MSNBC shortly after Haley’s resignation. Sanford, an administration critic, said of the story: “Something doesn’t smell right.” AARON BLAKE

Khashoggi, 59, was killed shortly after he entered the consulate on Oct. 2 and his body later removed from the premises, according to a U.S. official and sources close to the investigation. The Saudi government denies any involvement in Khashoggi’s disappearance. Meanwhile, a report emerged in Sabah — a pro-government Turkish newspaper — of two private jets arriving from Saudi Arabia on the day Khashoggi was last seen. Turkey’s Foreign Ministry said Tuesday it wants to inspect the consulate and walk the same steps taken by Khashoggi, a writer and critic of Saudi Arabia’s leadership who contributed to The Washington Post’s Global Opinions section. The Washington Post on Monday published an image from a closed-circuit television camera that a person close to the investigation said showed Khashoggi’s last known seconds in public — as he entered the consulate to get administrative documents for his upcoming marriage. Turkish investigators also are trying to trace the exact movements of 15 Saudi nationals who arrived in Istanbul the same day and are suspected of having a role in Khashoggi’s disappearance.

A bust of the Romanian-born writer was unveiled in the city on the country’s national Holocaust remembrance day. COURTS Brett Kavanaugh took the bench with his new Supreme Court colleagues for the first time Tuesday in a jovial atmosphere that was at odds with the tension and rancor surrounding his highcourt confirmation. The new justice asked a handful of questions in the first arguments of the day following a traditional welcome from Chief Justice John Roberts, who wished Kavanaugh “a long and happy career in our common calling.” In court, Kavanaugh asked questions of both sides in arguments over increased prison sentences for repeat offenders. As Justice Neil Gorsuch did in his first arguments last year, Kavanaugh focused heavily on the importance of following earlier decisions of the court. President Trump’s two high court picks testified about their respect for Supreme Court precedent, though Gorsuch already has been in the majority to overrule four high court rulings. Kavanaugh’s wife and two daughters were in seats reserved for justices’ guests, along with retired Justice Anthony Kennedy, whom Kavanaugh replaced on the bench. There were no disruptions in the courtroom, and the justices laughed at one another’s jokes. As the newest member of the court, Kavanaugh will take notes in private conferences and be the one to answer the door if someone knocks. JESSICA GRESKO AND MARK SHERMAN (AP)

Refugees await reunions Stricter U.S. screening has split families trying to escape war, famine
WASHINGTONPOST.COM WONKBLOG
Study: Boss has a huge effect on your happiness
NATI HARNIK (AP)
IMMIGRATION Death threats drove Hadi Mohammed out of Iraq and to a small apartment in Lincoln, Neb., where he and his two young sons managed to settle as refugees. But the danger hasn’t been enough to allow his wife to join them. Mohammed, who worked as a security guard for the U.S. military in Baghdad, says he was initially told he’d be reunited with his wife within a month. The wait has now dragged on for more than a year as she goes through stricter screening imposed by the Trump administration. Mohammed, 52, says it’s been an agonizing wait, especially for his 9-year-old son. “Every night he cries about mom, I need mom.” Tens of thousands of people are experiencing similar anguished waits as the number of refugees entering the U.S. falls to historic lows because of tighter scrutiny that administration officials say is necessary for security. Critics say it amounts to an abandonment of the country’s historic humanitarian role and discriminates against Muslims. The U.S. admitted 22,491 refugees in the budget year that ended Sept. 30. That’s one-quarter of the number allowed to enter two years ago and the lowest since Congress passed a law in 1980 creating the modern resettlement system. It was less than half the maximum the administration had said
Hadi Mohammed sits with his 9-yearold son last month in their apartment in Lincoln, Neb.
it would allow, even with millions of people seeking to escape war and famine around the world. “It’s unfortunate for the refugees who could have come this year and didn’t,” said Jen Smyers with Church World Service, an organization that supports refugees and immigrants. “But these low numbers also show the U.S. turning away from a global leadership role on this issue.” Last month, the cap was set even lower, at 30,000, for the new budget year. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said at the time the U.S. remained “the most generous nation in the world when it comes to protection-based immigration” but that the government needed to work through a backlog of pending asylum cases
and support efforts to resettle people closer to home, so they can eventually return. Behind the reduction are more stringent security protocols for citizens of 11 countries designated by the administration as presenting the greatest potential threat. People from four of them — Iraq, Iran, Syria and Somalia — made up 41 percent of refugees allowed into the U.S. in 2016 and 2017. Now, they make up just 2 percent as people such as Mohammed’s wife, whose name he does not want to publicize out of fear for her safety, face much lengthier background checks. In choosing who can enter as a refugee, the administration is also showing a preference for people from countries that don’t have
a majority Muslim population. Christians made up 63 percent of all refugee admissions in 2018, compared with 40 percent in 2017. Muslims, who had been 42 percent of all refugee admissions in 2017, were only 14 percent in 2018. There were 140 Iraqis accepted during the just-ended budget year, down from 6,886 the year before. Mohammed is afraid of what could happen if his wife doesn’t leave Iraq. He worries she could be a target because he provided security at U.S. military bases. “For my family to be at peace, I need to know that my wife is safe,” he said. “But I would never change my decision and return to Iraq. Coming to the United States was an answer to my prayers.” SUSANNAH GEORGE AND COLLEEN LONG (AP)

People who think of their immediate supervisor as more of a “partner” than a “boss” are significantly happier with their day-to-day lives and more satisfied with their lives overall, according to a new working paper by a team of Canadian and Korean economists. For middle-aged workers, the difference between a partnerboss and a boss-boss works out to about 0.4 points on a 10-point life satisfaction scale — “equivalent in life satisfaction terms to more than a doubling of household income,” according to the paper. Over the years, researchers have found that happiness usually follows a U-shaped curve throughout the course of life. To find out if any factors might mitigate a midlife happiness dip, the economists turned to the Gallup-Healthways daily poll, which surveys hundreds of adults each day. One question asked is how employed respondents view their immediate supervisor: as a “boss” in the traditional sense? Or more as a “partner”? Pooling millions of responses over a period of several years, the researchers found that people with boss-supervisors exhibit a much more significant drop in life satisfaction between their early 20s and mid-40s. But for people with partner-bosses, that part of the curve is much flatter. Both groups, however, see a big rise in life satisfaction after 50. CHRISTOPHER INGRAHAM

Fellow Federal Employees: Each year, you have the opportunity to make a major impact in your local community, across the nation, and around the world by making a donation through the Combined Federal Campaign. For example: • $1 plants a tree; • $5 feeds a family for 25 meals; • $10 buys 50 books for a preschool; • $50 funds medical research for an hour; and • $100 buys first-aid kits, blankets, and masks for a disaster response team. Last year, the generous federal community in the National Capital Area pledged more than $38 million and more than 50,000 volunteer hours! Thank you for your outstanding support. I am honored to be part of a federal community with such a strong spirit of generosity extending beyond our call to public service. A story that has touched me tells of a malnourished baby in the developing world who was taken to a hospital to be treated for pneumonia. While there, doctors discovered a defect in the young boy’s heart. More treatment was required, and he stayed in the hospital much longer than anticipated, during which time, his parents abandoned him. The hospital, unable to track down the parents who left their newborn son behind, worked to mend his heart. Fortunately, a CFC-supported organization took him in, and raised him at a children’s home; providing the food, toys, and education he needed. He is now almost ten years old, and continues to live at the home, relying on our donations, goodwill, and recurring gifts to thrive. This is the kind of difference we make through the CFC. We save lives, mend hearts, feed the hungry, educate the young, support research, and plant trees. If you have never participated in the CFC, this is your year to join us and Show Some Love to a cause that is important to you. Thank you in advance for participating in the 2018 campaign. very year, the Combined Federal Campaign, or CFC, makes it easy for federal employees and retirees to support dozens of causes and more than a thousand charities through monetary donations and awareness. This annual charitable giving campaign has raised more than $8.3 billion since it launched 57 years ago. And during last year’s campaign, federal employees in the national capital area pledged 50,000 volunteer hours to charities of their choice. If you don’t already have a specific charity in mind to donate to or if you’d like to spread your generosity across multiple charitable causes, one easy way to discover and support new-to-you organizations is to start with the Cause of the Week Calendar. During CFC, each week is dedicated to a different cause that needs the support of generous donors. Take a look at the next four weeks of the cause calendar. We included a few CFC-vetted charities that you may not have heard of to help you get started.

CFC Supporter Story: Eradicating Hunger
What is your ‘why’ for supporting the eradication of hunger? The scale of our global hunger problem is not widely known. In recent years, there has been significant progress in reducing the number of undernourished and hungry people around the world, but the fact is that approximately 1 in 9 people in our world face hunger on a daily basis. In our country, we do not often think of hunger as a problem, but it is and it is very real. Every day in major metropolitan areas, as well as in rural America, too many Americans go hungry. It is easy to forget, particularly in a metropolitan area like ours where incomes are generally higher than the rest of the country, that children, the elderly,
and the ill are most vulnerable and heavily affected. We also do not think about issues related to hunger such as childhood development, education and health. Where hunger is chronic, these issues have a long-lasting impact on not only those directly affected, but in the broader community.
about helping those facing a crisis. There are literally thousands of charities that exist to provide greater impact to all of the great things that we experience in our communities every day. Education is a prime example. • Story by Tara Shubbuck

Why are you motivated to continue supporting this cause? For me, addressing these challenges is a moral imperative. We are blessed with a bounty in this country and we have the ability to ensure that nobody goes without. We possess the ability and the resources to solve this problem today and in the long-term.

Tell us about your involvement with CFC. Although I have been a CFC donor through the years, I first became actively involved when I volunteered to serve as a Loaned Executive (LE). The opportunity to serve as an LE provided the opportunity to gain a broader perspective on the importance of charity in our communities. How would you advise someone who isn’t sure which cause or charity to support? First, I encourage everyone to support the CFC. It is the easiest way to ensure that your donation goes to worthy organizations. Think about what motivates you every day. I would also remind potential donors that the CFC is not just Roger P. harities all over the world are tackling the global hunger problem. But even in 2018, approximately 795 million people don’t have enough nourishing food to lead a healthy life, according to the World Food Programme. This is a cause that Roger P. Mireles, a senior advisor for the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service, cares about deeply. He recognizes that taking a step forward requires the collective power of charities. “Unfortunately, the need is too great for any one institution or group of organizations to tackle,” Mireles says. “This is why I am a supporter of the CFC. ospital stays can be long and lonely for anyone, but the isolation, worry and pain can be particularly difficult for children. One young charity is trying to change that for children in the National Capital Region through the healing power of creativity. “Kraftlove’s mission is to use art to promote a healing environment in the hospital for children struggling with illness,” said Kraftlove founder Anhvinh Wright. “By providing interactive art projects that inspire creativity and encourage self-expression, we hope to transform the hospital experience from one of illness to one of normalcy, joy and healing. We create art projects, package the necessary materials into Kraftlove kits, and donate those boxes to children’s hospitals.” The boxes are designed to help children cope with illness through the joy of creativity. “As a mental health counselor, I have witnessed firsthand the power that art has to heal,” said Cate Riihimaki, a licensed professional counselor. “The process of creating art empowers people during a time when they may feel powerless.” Launched in 2015, the 501(c)3 has assembled and donated nearly 2,500 Kraftlove boxes. Kraftlove currently partners with Children’s National Medical Center, MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, Inova Children’s Hospital, The Children’s Inn at NIH, and several more, including a variety of childhood cancer foundations.

very year, data from the U.S. Census Bureau reaffirm what Washington metropolitan-area residents already know: nearby neighborhoods are ranked as some of the wealthiest in the nation. In 2017, five local counties made the Forbes top 10 list for the richest counties in America. Residents of Loudoun County, Virginia, top the list and outrank all others in the nation with a median household income of $125,900. ING AMERICA® F FEED That’s a huge SY O E T UR concentration of CO TO wealth in this area. Yet, among Virginia, Maryland and Washington, DC, 1,643,520 people are struggling with hunger – and of them 481,860 are children. But the face of hunger doesn’t always manifest itself as someone experiencing homelessness. Anyone could fall into dire straits and not know where their next meal will come from — even your neighbors who appear to have financial stability. The DC area is far from being the only community in the United States that is affected by hunger. Just take the story of Lamont from Layton, Utah. He and his family had all the trappings of a comfortable life, like a house, cars and boats. It was a lifestyle that his job at a cable company helped maintain. Then the unexpected happened. “There was an accident that sent a piece of coaxial cable right through my eye,” he recalls. “I was supposed to be out for a while, but it turned out that the cable ruined my vision and left me unfit for the job. I was left relying on workman’s comp, but that wasn’t enough to feed my family.” Lamont was in a difficult position. He had grown up in poverty and vowed never to let his family experience the same, but he also didn’t want to ask for a handout. With kids to feed at home, his wife decided to visit a local food pantry that is supported by Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization. “I was scared walking through that door for the first time,” Lamont remembers. “I thought I’d be judged – but really, I was just judging myself. Everyone was so kind. They shook my hand, hugged me, and helped me see that this didn’t mean I was a failure – it just meant that I needed help to get back on my feet.”

It starts with donors, fundraisers and partners - like farmers, packers, government agencies and national food and grocery manufacturers - that donate perishable and non-perishable food. Through a nationwide infrastructure, Feeding America moves donated food items to its 200 food banks, or warehouses, where the items are properly handled and stored until they’re ready to be distributed to food pantries and meal programs. Hunger and food insecurity, which is not having access to enough food to lead an active, healthy life, are real issues in America. The Feeding America network brings 4.3 billion meals to 46 million people each year, including 12 million children and 7 million seniors. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) found that “an estimated 11.8 percent of American households were food insecure at least some time during the year in 2017,” according to a report released in September 2018.

The experience moved Lamont, and he started volunteering at the pantry. Soon, he was hired as a full-time employee and eventually promoted to director. “Now I’m in charge of a program that works with families to break the cycle of poverty,” Lamont says. “I can provide for my family again, and not only that, I’m truly fulfilled. I know I’m making a big difference in people’s lives.” The food pantry that Lamont works at is one of 60,000 pantries and food programs in the Feeding America network that provides food and services to people who are at risk of hunger across the United States and in Puerto Rico. There is hope, though. The same USDA research revealed that food insecurity is down .5 percent from 12.3 percent in 2016. As organizations like Feeding America are able to cover more territory and reach more people in lowincome neighborhoods and food deserts - areas with limited access to affordable, nutritious food then that percent can be driven down further. hen Gayle DiGiovanni started at Blessings International in 1996, she worked alongside the founder and two other part-time employees. The organization, with a mission of healing the hurting by equipping traveling medical teams with pharmaceuticals and supplies, has steadily increased in size and reach. Now as the director of development and accounts receivable, DiGiovanni works with 20 other employees to continue the organization’s important work. “In just the last five years, 41 million people have received medicine from Blessings internationally, impacting 139 nations; and 351,000 people in the USA have received medicine from Blessings, impacting 33 states,” DiGiovanni says proudly. In addition to providing supplies for medical mission trips, Blessings International participates in community outreach

programs, like Haiti Orphanage Medical Support (HOMS). Orphanages are often cash-strapped and lucky to be able to pay expenses for food, clothing and shelter. There oftentimes isn’t much money left to cover healthcare costs. This program reaches nearly 800 orphans in 19 orphanages across Haiti and provides medicine, vitamins and primary medical care to the children. HOMS is able to deliver this level of coverage thanks to the Medicines for Orphans fund, which was created by Blessings International to give medicine to orphans around the world. One Haitian child who HOMS helped treat is named Stanley. DiGiovanni recalls that he suffered from intestinal parasites, lethargy, severe shyness and a distrust of others. After receiving medical care, everyone saw a drastic change in Stanley. “Today Stanley is one of the most outgoing children in the orphanage,” DiGiovanni says. “He is full of life and vitality and no longer suffers from disease.” One project that Blessings International recently brought to HOMS is Mobile Kids Health Day. During this event, the orphans are tested for tuberculosis and malnutrition, and any who test positive are treated. This is just one of many ways - from giving away antimalarial medicine to treating those affected by natural disasters - that Blessings International is helping people across the globe receive life-saving medicine and medical attention. The End of Alzheimer’s Starts With You
More than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease.

“At the age of 53, my husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. My children were 8, 12, and 20. I became the decision maker, breadwinner and caregiver. Our hopes and dreams for the future were no longer applicable.” – Sarah More than 16 million Americans – mostly family members and friends – provide unpaid care for people with Alzheimer’s or other dementias. Nearly two-thirds of caregivers are women. Approximately one quarter are “sandwich generation” caregivers – caring for both someone with the disease and a child or grandchild. “My mother passed away from younger-onset Alzheimer’s. Despite retirement pensions, private and federal government health coverage, and three children contributing both financially and emotionally, my parents had to declare bankruptcy due to mounting

Total annual payments for health care, long-term care, and hospice care for people with Alzheimer’s or other dementias are projected to increase from $277 billion in 2018 to more than $1.1 trillion in 2050. This dramatic rise includes more than four-fold increases both in government spending under Medicare and Medicaid and in out-of-pocket spending. “My father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s soon after my son was born. Marian Homes, an all-volunteer 501(c) 3 charitable organization in Fairfax County, salutes the support of the CFCNCA program. We’re excited to let you know we’re nearing addition of a sixth home for severely intellectually disabled persons. Marian Homes, CFC #16658, is the one of the very few charitable organization in the U.S. providing residential housing for this under-served population by purchasing, converting to ADA standards, and renting homes to its operating partner. Each home provides five men or women with a safe, secure, caring and well-managed group home environment. The need is endless as there is a housing backlog of over 1,000 persons. Your donations have made our accomplishments possible, and your continuing support is most appreciated.

painful, chronic toothache can make everyday tasks downright impossible. In some locations around the world, children and adults cannot afford regular dental care, which means suffering through the pain caused by a cavity or infection. That was the case for Richella, a 5-year-old boy from Madagascar who could barely eat or concentrate on tasks like studying due to the chronic tooth pain he endured day in and day out. The doctors of the Mercy Ships Dental Team recognized that a tooth extraction was all that was needed to help relieve Richella of his pain, and so they removed the tooth free of charge. If a family cannot afford the cost of a simple tooth extraction, just imagine how out of reach the more urgent, and potentially life-saving, invasive medical procedures are to the world’s poorest inhabitants – like tumor removal, cleft lip repair, cataract operations, orthopedic surgery and obstetric fistula repair. That’s where Mercy Ships comes in. The organization runs the Africa Mercy, the world’s

By the numbers, since its founding in 1978, Mercy Ships has trained more than 5,900 local professionals, such as surgeons; more than 38,100 professionals in a specific area of expertise, such as anesthesiology, midwifery, and reconstructive surgery; and more than 198,000 local people in basic healthcare. One successful medical training that Holmes recalls fondly is that of an ophthalmic surgeon in Togo, West Africa. The doctor trained on the Africa Mercy for three months. “In his own local clinic, he used to perform around 200 to 250 eye surgeries (cataract removals) a year,” Holmes says. “Following his training, he completed 200 eye surgeries in 1 month! THREE POINTERS
CB Norman under fire
RICK SNIDER | SPORTS GURU
Gruden exit near: Redskins’ flaws reflect coaching Gruden was in 2015, when they took the division by defeating Philadelphia in Week 16. The only way Gruden will keep his job is by winning the division this season. Luckily, the Cowboys, Eagles and Giants are just as crummy as Washington. Whichever team goes 4-2 against the other three will probably take the NFC East at 10-6 overall. This is a winnable year for the Redskins, just like 2015, when they won the division with a 9-7 record. But Gruden can’t seem to get his team up when it’s most vital. They play like the Walking Dead. And that’s all on coaching. Redskins practices rarely seem to have a sense of urgency under Gruden, who is not a screamer, or even a demanding boss. Unfortunately, most NFL coaches are not nice guys, but the successful ones get the most out of their players. Gruden does not. Look at the passing game. Tight end Jordan Reed is normally the best option. He was invisible against the Saints,

JOHN MCDONNELL (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Coach Jay Gruden’s pink slip is coming. Reason for termination: Team frequently didn’t show up for work. Washington (2-2) was blown out 43-19 by New Orleans on Monday night. Once again, when the Redskins had plenty of time to prepare after a bye and an opportunity to pad their NFC East lead, they failed to take advantage. It’s not the first time Gruden has failed to ready his team for a big game. In five seasons, he is 1-4 in openers (and 30-37-1 overall). Last year, when the Redskins needed to win the finale to finish 8-8, they looked miserable in an 18-10 loss to the 2-13 New York Giants. In 2016, Washington needed to beat the Giants in the season finale to reach the playoffs but lost 19-10. Two weeks earlier, Washington was awful in a 26-15 loss to Carolina. The only time the Redskins have won a big game under
Cornerback Josh Norman, rarely at a loss for words himself, took a lot of heat during and after the Redskins’ 43-19 loss in New Orleans on “Monday Night Football.”
The Redskins’ 43-19 loss Monday in New Orleans is another example of their failures to take advantage of opportunities under coach Jay Gruden.
with one catch on two targets. Gruden is the offensive expert, but he rarely makes in-game adjustments. Did he really do anything to counter the Saints’ defense? He is supposed to be a quarterback whisperer, having developed Andy Dalton and Kirk Cousins. But Alex Smith looks lost. He’s not finding receivers and is checking down too quickly. Even worse, Smith is getting receivers hurt. Chris Thompson was nearly decapitated on a failed two-point try; fellow back Adrian Peterson was blasted on a sitting-duck pass and hurt his shoulder.
While Gruden runs the offense, he is supposed to oversee all the units. But his defense has too often looked clueless, and was overwhelmed Monday by Drew Brees. Gruden keeps changing defensive coordinators — Greg Manusky is in his second season — without seeing results. That’s on the head coach, too. This roster is Gruden’s, and its poor effort is his fault. Those employees may get the boss fired.
3 Opponent jabs him “I made that boy check out after the first half,” WR Michael Thomas (4 catches, 74 yards) tweeted of Norman, who was benched for a series to start the third quarter.
2 Ex-teammate critical “Josh is, I think, in love with being a celebrity right now …” ex-Redskins DB DeAngelo Hall said on 106.7 The Fan. “Josh needs to kind of refocus, get back on the grind.”
1 Norman’s response Of Thomas’ taunts, Norman said, “To speak on him, I would not waste my breath.” Of his brief benching, he said, “I leave everything up to the head coach.”

Howard’s back pain gets worse
The Wizards still hope that injured center Dwight Howard will be ready for the opener Oct. 18 against the Heat, but his latest setback makes that less likely. Howard, who hasn’t yet run a play with his teammates since signing in July, returned from the current trip — which concludes tonight in Detroit — to get a pain-relief injection for his lower back. His discomfort had gotten worse after a light workout with coaches. If he isn’t available for the opener, Ian Mahinmi will step in. (TWP) Redskins host Panthers at 1 p.m. Sunday

CAPITALS As Washington braces for life without suspended wing Tom Wilson for nearly a quarter of the season, it will rely on other personnel — currently Brett Connolly — to play alongside Alex Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuznetsov, whose otherworldly skills suggest such a transition would be easy. One of Wilson’s strengths is how he complements Ovechkin and Kuznetsov with his physicality, allowing him to carve out his own space on the ice. But other players, especially those lacking

Wilson’s size, might defer too often to such creative offensive players. Connolly said his focus is to simplify his role as much as
possible: compete for the puck to set up scoring chances for Ovechkin, and get the puck to Kuznetsov on the rush as quickly as possible.

Connolly, who had a careerhigh 27 points last season, will get another chance to test himself when the Vegas Golden Knights — the Capitals’ opponent last spring in the Stanley Cup Final — visit tonight (8, NBCSN). “It’s just a matter of getting used to each other a little bit,” said Connolly, 26. “I think Ovi is, for the most part, pretty predictable when he’s making his plays. He’s a shooter first. But with Kuzy, I think he’s one of the more unique players in the league. He’s got a confidence level to his game unlike I’ve ever seen before.” Connolly has eight shots on goal in the first two games, with one assist. ROMAN STUBBS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

MUSIC Hours after she walked offstage Saturday in Texas, Taylor Swift posted a photo to Instagram: an image of her joyously dancing onstage in a sparkly rainbow dress. “We had an indescribably incredible time with you Dallas,” she wrote to her 112 million followers. Less than 24 hours later, Swift posted another Instagram photo. And this one caused an internet meltdown. Swift, the pop megastar who launched her career in Nashville, has remained conspicuously silent about her political views. That is, until Sunday night, when she published a nearly 400-word message in which she endorsed Tennessee Democrats Phil Bredesen for Senate and Jim Cooper for the House. She also slammed Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., the GOP candidate for Senate, writing, “Her voting record in Congress appalls s and an terrifies me.”
It was a shocking shift for ra star who had refused to share are her opinion on anything political, cal, even during the divisiveness s of the 2016 presidential election. on. So what led to this abrupt turnrnaround? The timing is telling, ng, as the North American leg of Swift’s “Reputation” Stadium um Tour ended on Saturday. So not only is there no pressure to sell tickets or face unhappy fans, but other problems disappear as well. “The difference, I think, is this can’t become a news story at one of her events,” said Brian Mansfield, a former music journalist who covered Swift’s early career. “Until yesterday, that could have been an issue.” The common thinking is that Swift stayed silent for so long because she didn’t want to alienate anyone, particularly her country fan base, which probably leans conservative. Now that Swift is officially in the pop world and selling out stadiums, however, many feel like a political stance is unlikely to spark a hugely negative reaction. Swift’s post detailed her

Taylor Swift’s reputation is untouchable
Call it the T-Swift effect In an Instagram post Sunday, Taylor Swift encouraged her more than 112 million followers to register to vote. As of noon Tuesday, less than 48 hours after Swift’s post, more than 169,000 new people had done so on vote.org, spokeswoman Kamari Guthrie said. positions (“I believe in the fight for LGBTQ rights, and that any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is WRONG”) and called “systemic racism” in this
country “terrifying, sickening and prevalent.” As social media dissected Swift’s post, she was largely contrasted with Kanye West, as they have feuded since the 2009 MTV VMAs incident when he crashed her speech. West is now famously a Trump supporter. er. But Swift didn’t declare a party ty affiliation — she just encouraged ed people to “please educate yourself elf on the candidates running in your ur state and vote based on who most ost closely represents your values.” s.” Asked about Swift’s remarks, ks, President Trump said Monday, ay, “Let’s say that I like Taylor’s r’s music about 25 percent less now.” w.”
Eric Church’s sixth album, “Desperate Man,” released Friday, displays the approachable storytelling that his fans expect and Nashville banks on. One of the album’s gems, “Heart Like a Wheel” would best be described as a stroll in a bygone era. “Higher Wire” delivers electricity, heavy with the snarl of reverb guitar work. Yes, title track “Desperate Man” sounds too much like Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Fortunate Son.” But all is forgiven when the album’s sweetest song arrives with “Hippie Radio,” a heartwarming coming-of-age track. It’s the kind of song few do better than Church. RON HARRIS (AP)

Warner Bros. has hired “Guardians of the Galaxy” film filmmaker James Gunn to write and potentially direct a sequel to “Suicide Squad,” according to The Wrap. Disney D fired Gunn from directing “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” in July after past offensive tweets from the filmmaker resurfaced online. “The Accountant” director Gavin O’Connor had been attached to helm the next “Suicide Squad” installment, but he reportedly has left the project. Twenty One Pilots still soaring Def Leppard, Stevie Nicks up for Hall of Fame MUSIC Stevie Nicks, Devo and Def Leppard are among the artists included on this year’s list of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees, announced Tuesday. Nine other artists are returning to the ballot for another try, including Janet Jackson, Radiohead and The Cure. Other possible inductees include Rufus & Chaka Chan, Rage Against the Machine and Janet Jackson, who has been nominated twice before and returned to the ballot after being left off last year. Nicks’ nod comes 20 years after Fleetwood Mac, the band that launched her to fame, was inducted. Nicks would become the first woman to be inducted more than once. But as always, there were some notable names omitted from this year’s list, which features artists or groups that released their debut album in 1993 or earlier. There are repeat snubs for Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails and Soundgarden. Kate Bush, who landed her first nomination last year, was left off this year’s ballot. The list’s omission of the Wu-Tang Clan, eligible for the first time this year, also feels like a significant oversight. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame had leaned into evolving definitions of rock music in recent years, inducting Public Enemy in 2013, N.W.A. in 2016 and Tupac Shakur in 2017. BETHONIE BUTLER
ALBUM REVIEW It’s going to be hard for Twenty One Pilots to top the success of their last album. Every tune on “Blurryface” went gold, platinum or, in some cases, multiplatinum — the first album to do so in history. But if anyone’s going to do better, it’s these two guys from Ohio. Released Friday, “Trench,” the 14-track, fifth album from vocalist Tyler Joseph and drummer Josh Dun, is every bit as good as “Blurryface,” continuing the band’s genre-bending trademark of tackling various styles and showcasing a knack for songwriting.

‘Trench’ marks a worthy follow-up to the duo’s hit record ‘Blurryface’
Twenty One Pilots have continued their genre-bending ways with “Trench.”
The band comes fast out of the gate with the throbbing bass line of “Jumpsuit” with insecurity in the lyrics (“I can’t believe how much I hate/ Pressures of a new place roll my way”). Then it’s on
to Dun’s kinetic drumming on “Levitate,” the blissed-out and terrific “Morph” and the Killerslike, falsetto-fueled “My Blood.” We reach peak Twenty One Pilots on “Pet Cheetah,” an
exhilarating and daffy tune that mixes techno, rap and rock, along with a dose of reggae and house. “Trench” is a more low-key album — “Cut My Lip” and “Neon Gravestones” are slow burners — and Joseph and Dun show maturity in not overworking songs, too. The last track, “Leave the City,” is a piano-driven gem with understated drumming and ghostly vocals. The record also finds Joseph in a confident mood, lyric-wise, even mocking songwriting itself. “Chorus, verse, chorus, verse/ Now here comes the eight,” he sings on “Levitate.” On “Smithereens,” he croons: “For you, I’d go write a slick song just to show you the world.” Well, he’s certainly done that. He’s made another album full of them. MARK KENNEDY (AP)
