A woman in Zelenogradsk, Russia, has been hired by the town to care for its approximately 70 stray cats, Reuters reported Wednesday. Zelenogradsk hopes to brand itself as the most cat-friendly place in Russia, so it has hired Svetlana Logunova to bicycle around town in a jaunty green uniform providing the cats with food and attention. “I alone cannot care for every single one and a helping hand would go a long way,” Logunova said. Authorities in Healdsburg, Calif., are seeking a large hammer. The Santa Rosa Press-Democrat reported police are looking for an enormous artwork stolen last weekend: an 800-pound metal hammer with a redwood handle, valued at $15,000. It is 21 feet long; the head is 6 feet tall. It was on loan to the community center, where it vanished from the lawn. Artist Doug Unkrey said it’d take eight people or a flatbed trailer with a winch to carry it off. (AP)

EDUCATION There’s an image of Louis Kokonis enshrined in the memories of a bygone generation of high school students in Alexandria, Va. It’s of the lanky 86-year-old math teacher, much younger, dressed in a suit and covered in chalk dust. In the early 1970s, well before he was Alexandria’s longestever-serving teacher, Kokonis solved algebra and calculus equations on three blackboards in his Francis C. Hammond High School classroom. He worked from the front of the class, then moved to a blackboard fixed on a side wall before filling up the last slate in the back, recalled Chris Barquin, 64. Chalkboards have been replaced by computers, but Kokonis has remained a fixture in Alexandria City Public Schools — first at Hammond, then at T.C. D.C. Council race heats up
STAFFORD, VA.
Transgender girl left out during drill gets apology
THE DISTRICT Mayor Muriel Bowser’s recent embrace of Dionne Reeder, who is trying to unseat D.C. Council Member Elissa Silverman next month, has filled Reeder’s campaign coffers — with much of the cash coming from Bowser’s donor network. Reeder, who is not broadly known across the city, had $2,000 in her campaign account in August. But she raised more than $100,000 in the past two months — with most of it flooding in after the mayor endorsed her on Sept. 19, according to campaign finance reports. Silverman, I-At Large, a progressive favorite who does not accept corporate contributions, raised about $57,000 in the latest period. She had $102,000 on hand for the final four weeks of the campaign. Their race has shaped up as the most competitive of the general-election campaign, and as a referendum on the city’s leftward lurch. Bowser, a Democrat who is running for re-election with no credible challenger, has publicly gone after Silverman in a way no mayor has tried to oust a lawmaker. The mayor has headlined several fundraising events for Reeder, attended a candidate debate on her behalf on Wednesday night and plans to hold a rally for her on Sunday.

Mayor’s endorsement unleashes flood of cash to unseat incumbent
Dionne Reeder, left, hopes to unseat D.C. Council Member Elissa Silverman with the help of Mayor Muriel Bowser.
Bowser and Silverman have clashed over the lawmaker’s sharp questioning of administration officials and demand that Bowser fire an ally who organized a rally where a speaker called Silverman a “fake Jew.” Silverman has also championed the city’s new paid family leave law — legislation that Bowser and her allies in the business community oppose. The latest reports show significantly different fundraising strategies for Silverman and Reeder. Donors who gave $250 or less make up nearly half of Silverman’s overall fundraising haul, while they made up one-quarter of Reeder’s. About half of Reeder’s total

fundraising came from people who gave $1,000, while maximum donors made up one-quarter of Silverman’s war chest. At a recent candidate forum,
Silverman said she supported a ban on city contractors donating to candidates while Reeder said it would be “divisive” to bar local companies from the political process. Voters in November can choose two candidates for atlarge council seats; one of those seats is reserved for someone who is not from the party in power — in this case, Democrats. Council Member Anita Bonds, D, is widely expected to take one of the seats and win re-election. Independent candidate Rustin Lewis, Statehood Green Party candidate David Schwartzman and Republican Ralph Chittams Sr. are also on the ballot and have raised little campaign cash. The Free-Lance Star reports Stafford Public Schools superintendent Scott Kizner also reiterated that apology at a school board meeting earlier this week after the incident sparked a national outcry. Kizner said the system will review its procedures and make unspecified policy changes if necessary. (AP) THE DISTRICT

THE DISTRICT When Matthew Shepard died on a cold night 20 years ago, after being beaten with a pistol butt and tied to a split-rail wood fence, his parents cremated the 21-year-old and kept his ashes, for fear of drawing attention to a resting place of a person who was a victim of one of the nation’s worst anti-gay hate crimes. But now with the anniversary of their son’s murder Friday, the Shepards decided to inter his remains inside the crypt at Washington National Cathedral, where gay-equality activists say they can be a prominent symbol and even a pilgrimage destination for the movement. Although the cause of LGBT equality has made historic advancements since Shepherd was killed, it remains divisive in many parts of a country reembracing tribalism of all kinds. The 1998 killing of Shepard, a University of Wyoming student, by two young men in a remote area east of Laramie, Wyo., was so horrific that his name is on the federal law against bias crimes directed at LGBT people. It has been the subject of books, movies and the play “The Laramie Project,” which is one of the

Shepard died a few days later, on Oct. 12. On Oct. 26, his ashes will be placed in a niche in the crypt columbarium, a private, offlimits area on the lower level of the massive Gothic cathedral, which is the seat of the Episcopal Church and a popular spot for high-profile national spiritual events. Shepard, who had been active in the Episcopal Church, will be one of about 200 people interred at the cathedral in the
past century. Others include President Woodrow Wilson; Helen Keller and her teacher Anne Sullivan; and Navy Adm. George Dewey, said cathedral spokesman Kevin Eckstrom. Although visitors will not be able to access the crypt, cathedral officials are considering installing a plaque that they can view and touch, similar to one in Braille installed for Keller. The Oct. 26 service will be open to the public and will be presided over by Washington’s Episcopal bishop, Mariann Edgar Budde, and Bishop Gene Robinson, whose 2003 ordination as the first openly gay bishop in the Episcopal Church set off a dramatic split in the denomination that is still unfolding. RECORD 80-DEGREE OR ABOVE DAYS
The number of days of 80 degrees or higher in D.C. this year — tying the record — after the city’s official thermometer topped the mark before noon Thursday. The tally of 136 days at or above 80 degrees puts D.C. almost three weeks ahead of the current average of 117 days. It ties 1970 and 2007 for the most on record. The period of Oct. 1 to 10 averaged 12.7 degrees above normal. (TWP) Richmond gets highest score in Virginia on annual LGBTQ ranking for its community-support initiatives

Metro stays tight-lipped TRANSPORTATION Manspreading, facial recognition technology, missing guns, contract specifications and accidents and incidents of all kinds — these were just some of the topics of public document requests Metro received last year. Those who made requests were almost as varied: accident victims, crime victims, attorneys, journalists, contractors, union members, a whistleblower and even a Metro gadfly identified only by his Twitter handle. These folks were seeking access to public records through a process that resembles Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, right down to a maddening list of permissible exemptions that allow the transit agency to withhold several categories of information. At the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), the process of obtaining public information is done through its Public Access to Records Policy, known as PARP. PARP has become a verb for some and an epithet of frustration for others. It requires patience and money — at least in theory. Quarterly PARP reports say document requests generated more than $100,000 in fees in fiscal 2017, only $4,667 of which were collected. (The fees can be waived for various reasons.) A log of last year’s requests — obtained through a PARP request, of course — offers a window into some things about one of the nation’s busiest transit systems that people wanted to know. Last year, The Washington Post filed a request to obtain the Office of Inspector General’s investigation into allegations of falsified track and infrastructure
Metro has received requests for information on everything from accidents to “manspreading.”
inspections. The agency provided the report, along with some redactions, about six months later. Perhaps the hottest topic in 2017 was the size of Metro ridership for President Trump’s inauguration. Most requests, however, appeared to be seeking videos, accident reports and other information related to accidents or incidents involving Metro vehicles and properties. Some regulars who made requests said the PARP process has been a useful tool for shedding light on a transit agency that has been struggling to restore the public’s trust. Others say the PARP process often seems more concerned with shielding Metro than letting in the light: Documents get released, but often with a lot of redaction.
PARP requests Here are a few tidbits from the 2017 log of PARP requests. (TWP) Metro’s largest organized labor organization made a detailed request for information about D.C. Circulator’s personnel, training, ridership numbers and other data. Prequin, an international company that compiles data on finance, sought records about any assets invested by Metro in hedge funds. One requester, using the FOIA website MuckRock, asked for any emails containing the word “manspreading,” a term for when a (usually) male rider spreads himself across more than one seat on a public conveyance. Alas, Metro found nothing responsive, according to MuckRock’s request.

ALWAN GEORGES (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Calls for info are often met with runaround or lots of redactions
“I would say it’s to protect Metro in some way or fashion,” said Larry Lapidus, a lawyer who has been digging out records from Metro for years and often battles over redacted material. “When in doubt, they’re going to redact,” he said. “They have taken privacy protection to the ultimate degree where it makes no sense.” Lapidus also complained PARPs take too long, a criticism echoed by others. Unsuck DC Metro, one of Metro’s most biting Twitter gadflies and the author of the eponymous blog, said he often became frustrated by the length of time it took to fulfill PARP requests. It wasn’t unusual to receive documents well after the newsy moment was gone, he said. “I’m pretty sure I have some outstanding ones from [200914],” Unsuck DC Metro said in a message. “Ugh.” Sherri Ly, a spokeswoman for Metro, said the agency does its best to comply quickly and fairly with each PARP request, including some that are highly technical and voluminous in scope. Ly also said the agency withholds information as permitted under PARP exemptions, adding that those who make requests also have the right of appeal. The list of allowable exemptions includes “preliminary conclusions” in accident investigations, and she said that those are handled by local law enforcement agencies. Lapidus said that, at times, Metro acts like a private corporation that has no obligation to release information to the public unless it’s been subpoenaed. But as unwieldy and time consuming as the process can seem, it’s still a useful tool, he said. “I’ve been doing this for decades,” he said, “and overall it’s an improvement over giving the public nothing.” FREDRICK KUNKLE (THE WASHINGTON POST)
DC RIDER KERY MURAKAMI
No luck here getting info from Metro In the past four months, DC Rider has filed two requests under Metro’s version of the Freedom of Information Act, the Public Access to Records Policy, or PARP. We haven’t had much luck. On June 19 and 20, we asked for police reports for a number of crimes listed on the Metro Transit Police blotter online. “The PARP team” first responded June 21 that it does not accept blanket requests, such as seeing new police reports every day, and that “we are not required to process requests if burdensome.” On June 28, Metro denied the request outright, refusing to make public reports on the crimes affecting riders. In response to an email protesting the denial, a Metro lawyer emailed: “WMATA, pursuant to policy, does not generally release records related to criminal matters during on-going law enforcement proceedings.” On July 24, we tried again, this time asking for the number of times Metro has received sexual harassment complaints about its employees, and how many of those cases resulted in some sort of action against the workers. On Aug. 7, another Metro attorney replied that WMATA aims to respond to records requests within 20 business days. That means we should have received the information by late August. But nothing yet.

Crew members jettison after Soyuz rocket fails MOSCOW A Russian Soyuz rocket malfunctioned two minutes after liftoff Thursday on a mission to the International Space Station, triggering an automatic abort command that forced the twomember crew — an American and Russian — to make a harrowing emergency landing in their capsule, 200 miles from the launch site in the steppes of Kazakhstan. U.S. astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin had made it about halfway to space before suddenly going the other direction. They fell about 31 miles back to the surface, according to NASA. They were immediately located by rescue teams, retrieved from the capsule with no apparent injuries, and flown back to the

launch site for an emotional reunion with their families. The failure of the Soyuz MS10 rocket immediately led to the grounding of the Soyuz fleet and will have cascading effects for U.S. and Russian space programs, along with their international partners. The Soyuz is the only way to get to and from the station. This was a terrifying day, but not a tragic one. Something went very wrong — a failure of
unknown origin during the firing of the Soyuz MS-10 rocket’s second booster — but the escape system worked perfectly. “It wasn’t quite the day that we planned, but it is great to have Nick and Alexey at least back on the ground,” said Kenny Todd, who directs space station operations for NASA. “This is a very difficult business that we’re in. And it can absolutely humble you.” Right now the space station has a crew of three — an American, a German and a Russian. They may find their mission extended, but at some point they will need to return to Earth. Thursday’s accident led NASA officials to acknowledge that they and their partners might need to bring everyone home and hope that the station can function safely with no one onboard, relying solely on commands from the ground.

Saudis join Turks for probe
19
Saudi leader Mohammed bin Salman has asked to work with Turkish police.
CCT (Hurriyet via AP)
Istanbul Turkey said Thursday it has agreed to a request by Saudi Arabia to form a joint committee to probe the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist who Turkish investigators believe was killed in the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul by agents of the Saudi government, according to people familiar with the investigation. The Saudi request to cooperate with Turkey, which was announced Thursday by the top adviser to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey, was a possible sign that the Saudi leadership may be searching for an exit from the crisis as it faces growing international pressure to explain Khashoggi’s fate. The Saudi journalist went missing Oct. 2, shortly after he entered the consulate to obtain documents related to his upcoming wedding. Saudi Arabia said he left the consulate on his own, but it has provided no evidence — such as video footage that would show him leaving. Before the announcement about a joint probe, Erdogan mocked Saudi claims that the consulate’s cameras were not recording, saying that the Saudis possess “advanced” surveillance equipment that would have captured Khashoggi’s movements in and around the facility, according to a report published

Nations investigate Oct. 2 disappearance of writer feared killed
The Turkish newspaper Hurriyet reported that this shot from a video camera shows Jamal Khashoggi entering the Saudi consulate Oct. 2.
Thursday in Turkey’s daily Sabah newspaper. The Saudis could “catch a bird or a mosquito with the advanced systems they have,” Erdogan said. Some observers have called for the United States to halt arms sales to Saudi Arabia until the case is resolved. Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday, President Trump
said that “it would not be acceptable to me” to block arms sales to Saudi Arabia in response to Khashoggi the reporter’s disappearance. Trump said he was open to other actions but questioned the wisdom of not selling military weapons, saying Saudi Arabia
could instead turn to Russia or China, hurting U.S. defense companies. “What good does that do us?” Trump asked. On his first international trip as president, Trump visited Saudi Arabia and announced an arms deal worth $110 billion. The administration also relies on Saudi support for several aspects of its Middle East agenda. The crown prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, ordered an operation to lure Khashoggi back to Saudi Arabia from his home-in-exile in Virginia and then detain him, according to U.S. intelligence intercepts of Saudi officials discussing the plan, The Post reported Wednesday. The intelligence was described by U.S. officials familiar with it. When asked about the intelligence report, Trump said: “Well, it would be a very sad thing, and we would probably know in the very short future.” Khashoggi was a prominent critic of the Saudi government and Mohammed in particular. Several of Khashoggi’s friends said that over the past four months, senior Saudi officials close to the crown prince had called Khashoggi to offer him protection, and even a high-level job with the government, if he returned to his home country. Khashoggi, however, was skeptical of the offers. He told one friend that the Saudi government would never make good on its promises not to harm him. (The Washington Post)
World’s longest flight
The approximate duration, in hours, of the world’s longest direct commercial flight — from Singapore to the New York metropolitan area. Singapore Airlines launched the record-breaking route in 2004, but canceled it nine years later because of rising fuel prices. The route between Changi Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport was relaunched Thursday. The route will be served three times the first week. Daily flights will be offered when a second Airbus A350-900ULR is delivered. The planes consume 25 percent less fuel than an older-generation aircraft of the same size. Rising number of kids remain unvaccinated Health A pair of reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention highlights a growing concern among health officials about children who aren’t getting the necessary protection against vaccine-preventable diseases. The percentage of U.S. children under 2 who haven’t received any vaccinations has quadrupled in the past 17 years, according to federal health data released Thursday. Of children born in 2015, 1.3 percent had not received any of the recommended shots, according to the CDC. That compared with 0.9 percent in 2011 and with 0.3 percent of 19- to 35-month-olds who had not received any immunizations when surveyed in 2001. Assuming the same proportion of children born in 2016 didn’t get any vaccinations, about 100,000 children who are now younger than 2 aren’t vaccinated against 14 potentially serious illnesses, said Amanda Cohn, the CDC’s senior adviser for vaccines. A recent upswing in vaccine skepticism and outright refusal to vaccinate has spawned communities of under-vaccinated children who are more susceptible to disease and pose health risks to the broader public. In some cases, parents hesitate or refuse to immunize, officials and experts said. Insurance coverage and an urban-rural disparity are likely other reasons for the troubling rise. Lena H. ‘Lives changed forever’ Florida Panhandle comes to grips with Hurricane Michael’s ‘unimaginable destruction’ Stocks extend steep slide into second day
AND BRENDAN FARRINGTON (AP)
MARLEY JAY (AP)

Over 900,000 homes and businesses in Florida, Alabama, Georgia and the Carolinas were without power Thursday. As the storm made its way inland, it caused havoc in Georgia, spinning off possible tornadoes and taking down power lines and trees. Forecasters expected it to drop up to 7 inches of rain over the Carolinas and Virginia before pushing out to sea Thursday night. JAY REEVES
ECONOMY U.S. stocks sank more than 2 percent Thursday, the second day of steep declines around the globe driven by concerns about rising interest rates and trade tensions slowing growth. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 545 points after dropping 831 points Wednesday. The two-day, 1,376-point loss — 5.3 percent — is the biggest for Dow since February. The S&P 500 is also down more than 5 percent over the two days and after falling for the past six trading days is almost 7 percent below its Sept. 20 high. After a decade of ultra-low interest rates, the Fed has been gradually raising those rates as a curb against inflation. The higher rates, however, have spurred concerns that slower growth would hurt corporate profits. The selling Thursday was widespread. Energy and technology companies and retailers extended recent slides. “There isn’t much of a place to hide right now in the equity market,” said Willie Delwiche, an investment strategist at Baird. Thursday’s losses in the U.S. followed steep declines overseas. Markets in Hong Kong, Japan, France, Britain and Germany declined sharply. On Thursday, President Trump blamed the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate policy. “I think the Fed is out of control,” the president said to reporters in the Oval Office.

FLORIDA The devastation inflicted by Hurricane Michael came into focus Thursday with rows upon rows of homes found smashed to pieces, and rescue crews began making their way into the stricken areas in hopes of accounting for hundreds of people who might have stayed behind. At least three deaths were blamed on Michael, the most powerful hurricane to hit the continental U.S. in over 50 years, and it wasn’t done yet: Though reduced to a tropical storm, it brought flash flooding to North Carolina and Virginia, soaking areas still recovering from Hurricane Florence. Under a perfectly clear blue sky, families living along the Florida Panhandle emerged from darkened shelters and hotels to a perilous landscape of shattered homes and shopping centers, beeping security alarms, wailing sirens and hovering helicopters. Gov. Rick Scott said the Panhandle woke up to “unimaginable destruction.” “So many lives have been changed forever. So many families have lost everything,” he said. The full extent of Michael’s fury was only slowly becoming clear, with some of the hardest-hit areas difficult to reach because of roads blocked by debris or water. An 80-mile stretch of Interstate 10, the main east-west route along the Panhandle, was closed. Some of the worst damage was in Mexico Beach, where the hurricane crashed ashore Wednesday as a Category 4 monster with 155 mph winds and a storm surge of 9 feet. Entire blocks of homes near the beach were obliterated, reduced to nothing but concrete slabs in the sand. State officials said 285 people

in Mexico Beach had defied a mandatory evacuation order ahead of the storm. National Guard troops made their way into the ground-zero town and found 20 survivors Wednesday night, and more rescue crews were pushing into the area, with the fate of many residents unknown. Mishelle McPherson and her ex-husband searched for the elderly mother of a friend. The woman lived in a small cinder block house about 150 yards

from the Gulf and thought she would be OK. The home was found smashed, with no sign of the woman. “Do you think her body would be here? Do you think it would have floated away?” McPherson asked. As thousands of National Guard troops, law enforcement officers and medical teams fanned out, the governor pleaded with people in the devastated areas to stay away for now because of hazards such as fallen trees and power lines.

Smith says there’s a lot to improve
NLCS GAME 1
Dodgers at Brewers
QB challenges himself and his teammates to look ‘in the mirror’ after blowout loss NFL Forty-eight hours after his worst game in burgundy and gold, quarterback Alex Smith faced the most pointed round of questions regarding his play since joining the Redskins. The 14-year veteran handled the session Wednesday with his usual calm, and though there were hints of annoyance at times, he was not the only member of the team less than thrilled to detail the many issues apparent in the 43-19 loss to the Saints. “Looking at it, [you say] what could I do better?” Smith said. “For all of us, I know myself, there was a lot I could do better. Lack of getting a rhythm, [the] situation, it being one-sided, obviously it turns into a pass-heavy deal. We’re down, you start pressing. All those things come into account in a situation like that.”
Smith completed just 59 percent of his passes for 275 yards with an interception and a season-low 69.9 passer rating. He had only one game with a lower rating in all of 2017. Smith missed open receivers, made bad decisions and never seemed completely comfortable Monday night. There were miscommunications with receivers, and he acknowledged not seeing the field particularly well. There were questions before the regular season about how in sync Smith would be with his pass catchers after not playing much with them during preseason games. Those questions remain as tight end Jordan Reed, who was targeted just twice Monday, and wide receivers Jamison Crowder and Josh Doctson have yet to break out. “We’ve got to get ready to
play,” Smith said. “Yeah, are there reps where maybe more time would have helped? Maybe. But at this point that doesn’t do us any good. “I do feel comfortable in what we are doing. … I think whether you’ve played with a guy for five years in the same system, those things always happen. I think you are fine-tuning those things.” Coach Jay Gruden and Smith both said they’ve talked about the play-calling in an attempt to find what fits best, but Smith added he has to play better, regardless. There was some surprise with the way the offense operated. Smith thought the team had a good
plan and expected to execute it. That didn’t happen, and the Redskins had to move on and prepare for the Carolina Panthers on a short week. There’s no time to dwell on the loss after returning from New Orleans around 5 a.m. Tuesday. Smith, however, said the performance can’t be dismissed quickly. “You want to be real with yourself,” Smith said. “I think every guy in there has got to look at themselves in the mirror and be real with themselves. Things they have to get better at, need to get better at to help this team, and we all have them.” KAREEM COPELAND (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Big Ten’s new bag of tricks Teams around a league known for dull offenses start taking some risks
3
mu st-see ga m es
Terps’ offense heavily reliant on run game
DARRON CUMMINGS (AP)
COLLEGE FOOTBALL A run of trick plays this season is challenging the Big Ten’s reputation for stodgy football. Coach Kirk Ferentz pulled the biggest of them last week when Iowa successfully ran a fake field goal against Minnesota, with T.J. Hockenson catching a sandlot-style snap on the overloaded right side and chugging 4 yards for a touchdown. There was Michigan State scoring on a double reverse and a Michigan receiver throwing to a tight end. And there was Rutgers’ failed attempt at chicanery against Illinois when a backward pass to an offensive lineman sailed high and would have been a fumble if it hadn’t rolled out of bounds. Oh, well. Rutgers threw an interception on the next play. Past weeks have seen Illinois use a receiver pass off a reverse to take a brief lead against Penn State, Michigan State score against Indiana on an option pitch to its kicker and Purdue complete a long pass on a fleaflicker against Nebraska. It was the play Iowa calls “Herky” that had fans talking. Ferentz joked after the Hawkeyes’ 48-31 win that all his assistants wanted to run the fake field goal and that he was the lone dissenting voice until he relented. “I was just trying to add to the stereotype. I’ve kind of been

typecast I think over the last 19 years,” Ferentz said this week. The Hawkeyes led 14-7 and had fourth-and-goal at the 4 when Ferentz green-lighted the play. Iowa overloaded the right side with seven blockers in what’s known as a “muddle.” Typically, those players would retreat to their conventional spots before the snap for a field-goal try. This time, they didn’t. Long snapper Jackson Subbert, on the left hash, sent a left-handed snap sideways to Hockenson, who was just inside the right hash.
Hockenson ran right and beat the Gophers to the pylon. Subbert said he rehearsed the play in the locker room before the game and misfired on some of his snaps. “Probably lucky I wasn’t in the locker room when they were doing that,” Ferentz said. Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio has long had a penchant for trickery. This year quarterback Brian Lewerke, who also serves as holder, took off running on a fake field goal play called “Rocks” and pitched to kicker Matt Coghlin to finish a 6-yard
TD in a 35-21 win over Indiana. “You’ve got to catch people off guard,” Dantonio said. Someone who loves trick plays as much or more than Dantonio is Purdue coach Jeff Brohm, who vowed before the season to run at least 50 of them this year. “You want to make sure you have enough,” Brohm said. “You want to make sure you don’t do too much. But it is important you give yourself a chance to win, and we definitely want to err on the side of being creative.”

To pull off the upset, the Tigers will need QB Joe Burrow, left, to bounce back after the junior had just 192 yards passing and two interceptions in last week’s loss to Florida.
Jonathan Taylor has reached 100 yards rushing in each of the Badgers’ five games this year, but the Wolverines have the sixth-best rushing defense in the country.
RB Myles Gaskin has a TD in four of the past five games and he’ll need to score for the Huskies to keep up with Oregon’s high-powered offense (45.6 points per game). (EXPRESS)

COLLEGE FOOTBALL In the second half of Maryland’s 42-21 loss at Michigan last Saturday, quarterback Kasim Hill, above, completed four passes on a 15-play touchdown drive. Two possessions later, after Hill threw an interception, quarterback Tyrrell Pigrome stepped in and recorded a 42-yard carry and ultimately scored on a short run. Interim coach Matt Canada said those two series showed what Maryland’s offense can be. That’s why, heading into Maryland’s game against visiting Rutgers on Saturday (noon, BTN), Canada’s plan remains the same: Hill will start, but Pigrome will play, too. “They both create issues for the defense,” Canada said. As a whole, the offense struggled last week against the nation’s No. 1 defense, totaling just 220 yards, and the Terps showed their reliance on the run. Hill completed just 5 of 10 passes for 62 yards. Pigrome completed 2 of 3 passes for 11 yards. The Terps ran the ball nearly three times as often as they passed, with 37 rushing plays. For the season, the team ranks No. 123 of out of 129 FBS teams with an average of 127.6 passing yards per game. “We haven’t gotten [the receivers] as involved as we’d like to,” Canada admits. But any perception of offensive imbalance doesn’t bother Canada. “Stats are for losers,” he said. EMILY GIAMBALVO (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘Bad Times at the El Royale’
An epic journey within Solemn yet stirring, ‘First Man’ focuses on the humanity of Neil Armstrong’s story
UNIVERSAL PICTURES
R, 140 min.
Ryan Gosling plays Neil Armstrong in “First Man,” an introspective look at a world-changing event.
The setup of “Bad Times at the El Royale” sounds familiar, even cliche: Seven strangers (played by actors including Jon Hamm, Jeff Bridges, Cynthia Erivo and Dakota Johnson), each with a skeleton in the closet, find themselves thrown together at a hotel that itself hides a secret. The film is a schizoid thing: terribly entertaining, and at times just a wee bit soulless. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)
FILM REVIEW Ryan Gosling does his best to dial down his star power in “First Man,” in which he plays the astronaut Neil Armstrong with unsmiling reticence and stoicism. Based on James Hansen’s biography of the same name, this absorbing, meticulously detailed chronicle of Armstrong’s career — culminating with the Apollo 11 NASA mission during which he became the first man to walk on the moon — continually undercuts the story’s inherent triumphalism and mythmaking. Like its protagonist, “First Man” doesn’t go in for theatrics or gratuitous emotion, however justified. It gets the job done, with professionalism, immersive authenticity and unadorned feeling, of which Armstrong himself might just have approved, however apprehensively. “First Man” prepares viewers for the experience they’re about to have from its first moments, when Armstrong is flying a
hypersonic X-15 aircraft over the Mojave Desert in 1961. With shaky close-ups and a deafening roar, director Damien Chazelle (working from a script by Josh Singer) never pulls back as Armstrong bounces off the atmosphere, frantically trying to bring the plane safely to land. It’s a harrowing sequence, full of dizzying, disorienting closeups and swirling gadgetry. And that radically subjective visual style will be repeated throughout “First Man,” as Chazelle crams his camera into ever more claustrophobic cockpits and capsules, as well as into the no less fraught environs of the Armstrong household. Hewing closely to Hansen’s book, Chazelle faithfully recounts Armstrong’s bid to become a member of the Gemini team, NASA’s second mannedspaceflight program. We also learn about the doomed Apollo 1 team, which perished during a preflight test. Those deaths, as well as several

‘First Man’ (PG-13, 141 min.) DIRECTOR: Damien Chazelle STARS: Ryan Gosling, Claire Foy, Corey Stoll, Kyle Chandler IN A NUTSHELL: Coming to terms with his mission’s extraordinary risk, Neil Armstrong embarks on a historic journey as he becomes the first man to step foot on the moon.
that came before, haunt Armstrong throughout “First Man.” But the sadness that trails Armstrong is nowhere stronger than in his own home. As “First Man” begins, Armstrong and his wife, Janet (Claire Foy), endure an unspeakable loss. This might sound like a downer. And it’s true that, thanks to both its diffident hero and its resistance to easy romanticism, “First Man” is a surprisingly somber, occasionally inert, sometimes even off-putting enterprise. Even the verite visual
language sends a mixed message. There are times when messy verite-style realism and IMAX-scale spectacle seem to be fighting each other, with neither emerging a clear winner. But those contradictions also make “First Man” smarter and more layered than a conventional space-exploration adventure. For every thrilling triumph, the filmmakers add a crucial piece of context, indicating its human and material costs. When Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin (Corey Stoll) and Mike Collins (Lukas Haas) take their historic 1969 flight — and Armstrong takes that legendary first step and great leap — the moment carries all the more grandeur and moral force for being staged with solemnity and pockets of void-like silence. “First Man” may not wear its heart on its sleeve. But it trusts the audience to find it on their own, in a quieter and more reflective place. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

“Garry Winogrand: All Things Are Photographable” is a balanced and deeply satisfying assessment of the artist’s work, which is lavishly on display in hundreds of the his images. What’s most fascinating about Winogrand’s art is its hybrid nature, as Sasha Waters Freyer’s documentary makes clear. M.O.

Welcome to the real world ‘The Oath’ makes for a blistering political satire that hits close to home
‘22 July’ studies the aftermath of a massacre
ROADSIDE ATTRACTIONS
FILM REVIEW Now here’s a great idea for a movie: What would happen if, in a test of patriotism, American citizens were asked to pledge their allegiance to a despotic U.S. president? Can’t you just imagine the comic possibilities: the breakdown in civility and social norms that might result, driving a wedge between family members of different political persuasions — over Thanksgiving dinner, no less? Huh-larious. Too soon? Too real? With the bruising battle over Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation still a fresh memory for many, those last two questions are likely to linger in the mind as lefty moviegoers settle in to enjoy “The Oath,” a blistering political satire that might rip the bandage and the scab, as well as a lot of the skin, off a political wound that has barely had time to heal. Written and directed by Ike Barinholtz, “The Oath” imagines a plausibly dystopian near future, one in which civilians have been enjoined to publicly declare their loyalty to a thin-skinned, conservative commander in chief. As Thanksgiving arrives for Barinholtz’s Chris, a confirmed member of the #resistance and a compulsive news junkie who has

so far scorned the new presidential edict, he and his wife, Kai (Tiffany Haddish), prepare to welcome Chris’ family members into their home. This includes Chris’ like-minded sister (Carrie Brownstein); their cantankerous father and his peacekeeping wife (Chris Ellis and Nora Dunn); and Chris’ younger bother and his girlfriend (played by Barinholtz’s real-life sibling Jon Barinholtz and Meredith Hagner). In its broad contours, “The Oath” hews to many a Thanksgiving-themed comedy before it, aping the well-worn genre in which long-simmering disputes boil over at the annual holiday gathering. As the arguments become volcanic, agents from a

Homeland Security-style police force are summoned. The agents include a violent, far-right hothead (Billy Magnussen) and his more sensible partner (John Cho). Their presence inflames Chris, who is soon engaged in a confrontation with
the lawmen that turns regrettably vituperative, and surprisingly violent. It feels all too possible. To be sure, the comedy of “The Oath” is heightened, with slapstick histrionics reminding us that the shouting — and spurting blood — isn’t real. But the overheated tone of “The Oath” is occasionally hot enough to leave third-degree burns, rather than merely singe. Going to the movies is often viewed as escapism. As over the top as it may be, the at times alltoo-true-to-life “The Oath” is one case where escaping from the frying pan feels like diving headfirst into the fire. Brian Tyree Henry joins “Godzilla vs. Kong”
FILM REVIEW One-man-against-the-world is a scenario that Paul Greengrass, the director of three “Bourne” films, has already handled. With his latest film, Netflix’s “22 July,” however, his protagonist is no Jason Bourne. He’s Anders Behring Breivik, the real-life mass killer who, on July 22, 2011, killed 77 Norwegians, most of them teenagers. During the film’s first act, Breivik (Anders Danielsen Lie) kills eight people with a bomb in Oslo before traveling to Utoya island to gun down adolescents at a Labour Party youth camp. Greengrass employs a handheld camera, as usual, to simulate confusion, panic and terror. “22 July” soon leaves the titular date behind. Two-thirds of the narrative is devoted primarily to the recovery of a survivor named Viljar (Jonas Strand Gravli), and Breivik’s trial. The self-styled “Knight Templar” requests representation by a liberal attorney (Jon Oigarden), who, according to the movie, is not permitted to refuse. By spending more time on the aftermath than on the crime itself, Greengrass loses some of the urgency of his other movies. But the performances are suitably intense. With “United 93” and “Captain Phillips,” the filmmaker previously excelled at depicting events that overwhelmed individuals; in “22 July,” he demonstrates how one deluded zealot can shake an entire country. Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

Kanye West visited President Trump in the Oval Office Thursday and spoke with reporters before a private lunch with the president. Wearing his “Make America Great Again” hat, West told Trump that putting on the hat made him feel “like Superman.” The rapper dominated the conversation with a series of monologues. West said that he was misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder and he is just sleep-deprived, and he encouraged Trump to swap Air Force One for a hydrogen-powered plane.
