Police in Augusta, Maine, are looking for the owner of a 50-pound piglet that wore itself out while dodging traffic Saturday evening after presumably escaping. The Portland Press Herald reported that police went door to door looking for the animal’s owner without any luck. They say the pig is being cared for by a person familiar with farm animals until the owner can be found. The pig was in good condition, other than being tired out. (AP)
Deputies in California used Doritos to lure a pig “the size of a mini horse” back home. The pig was running around a neighborhood when the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office received the call Saturday. One deputy had Doritos in her lunch bag. She left a trail of chips, which the pig followed. Deputies had responded to previous calls about the pig and knew where to take him. He was returned to his pen and deputies secured the gate. (AP)

A relic of Old Washington THE DISTRICT A first-time guest to the Meridian Ball might be forgiven for thinking this is what Washington is really like behind the scenes: men in tuxedos, women in ballgowns, wealthy and powerful people sipping champagne and dancing by candlelight in a historic mansion. More than 800 people attended Friday’s 50th annual ball, which traditionally attracts a bipartisan crowd of administration officials, members of Congress, ambassadors and philanthropists. Yes, that was Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein surrounded by well-wishers and a security detail. In the garden, presidential adviser Kellyanne Conway huddled in a cozy tete-atete with Republican Rep. Mark Meadows, with Democratic Rep. Don Beyer just out of earshot. Fox News anchor Bret Baier and HuffPost’s Howard Fineman lightly opined on the midterms. “You throw a great party!” a guest shouted at Meridian President Stuart Holliday. The

sold-out fundraiser raised “well over” $1 million for the Meridian International Center, which promotes nonpartisan, diplomatic collaboration on global issues. Others balls have come and gone, victims of changing tastes and economic realities. Who wants to waltz, even if they know how? Plenty of men own tuxedos in this town, but they hate the fuss of renting a white-tie get-up. Others would rather not change into black tie when a dark suit will suffice. We live in a more
casual world, day and night. Meridian is the last ball of its kind. It is a survivor of a bygone era, a vision of Washington less as it is today and more as it would like to imagine itself: elegant, serious, sophisticated and united for important issues and causes. And, although most of the guests would never admit it, everyone still wants a little glamour in their lives. In many respects, Meridian is lucky. The emergence of a global economy made the ball attractive
to corporate donors and ambassadors looking to entice business to their countries. Embassies are happy to donate dinners for the ball’s A-list guests and top donors — a perk that not only adds a level of sophistication to the event but adds a huge amount of money to the bottom line. They also own their venue, which makes it possible to host the ball in one of the city’s most beautiful settings without breaking the bank. The house just off 16th Street NW, designed in the style of 18th-century French townhouses, was built in 1922 for Irwin Laughlin, ambassador to Spain and a well-respected diplomat. Meridian acquired the property and gardens in 1960. “The setting can’t be underestimated,” said Holliday. “I always thought the ball had an elegance, almost a European feel and quality to it.” The ball has modernized over the years, but its allure remains. Guests on Friday ranged from age 25 to 85, many of them on the dance floors, all having some version of their own Cinderella moment. A piece of Old Washington endures — at least for one night. His biggest milestone so far has been taking his first steps alone out in the yard — away from his mother, Calaya. It is a sign, zoo experts said in a recent post on the zoo’s blog, that his confidence is growing. They called his progress “amazing,” given that he’s just 6 months old. Zoo officials said Moke has a lot of energy, and they find him “mesmerizing to watch” as he’s becoming more adventurous. (TWP)

THE DISTRICT
Archdiocese releases list of accused priests
THE DISTRICT The explosive growth of shortterm rentals nationwide has pushed local governments to rein in the practice, with help from the hotel industry, which wants to stifle a formidable competitor. But the effort has spawned political contests that have highlighted the difficulty of managing a disruptive new industry. It has triggered a backlash from the short-term rental firms and property owners who don’t want to lose a lucrative enterprise. In the District, the tug of war is scheduled to reach a climax today with a second D.C. Council vote expected to approve some of the toughest restrictions in the country. They would ban shortterm rentals of a second home — a measure that has proved to be the single most divisive provision in debates nationwide. The D.C. bill would allow property owners to rent out space in their primary residence when the host is present, and for a specified period — up to 90 days a year — when the host is absent. These kinds of new restrictions — in scores of cities in the U.S. and hundreds worldwide — have barely slowed the rise in home-sharing, which is forecast to continue to expand rapidly and permanently transform the lodging and tourism business. Short-term rentals have soared because hosts like the extra income and guests get alternatives, often at a lower price, to a hotel or motel. In Northeast D.C., Shaun Johnson told The Washington Post last year that he can afford to stay in the city only because of the extra income he makes as an Airbnb

host. Johnson said he regularly rents out two bedrooms and the basement in his rowhouse and described the extra $40 or $50 a night per rental as a “godsend” in meeting his mortgage payments. The expansion aroused fear in the lodging industry, whose companies and unions have financed and promoted tight regulation of what they describe as “illegal hotels.” They have formed an alliance with residents unhappy that short-term rentals are altering their neighborhoods’ character and with affordable housing activists. They make claims, based on inconclusive data, that the growth of short-term rentals is contributing significantly to housing shortages and rising rents. “The real story over the last year or year and a half seems to be the hotel industry waking up to the fact that Airbnb poses a much bigger threat to their business than they originally imagined,” said Arun Sundararajan, a business

professor at New York University. Airbnb and similar companies have said the hotel industry is trying to eliminate competition. About 9,000 short-term rentals operate in D.C., competing with about 31,000 hotel rooms. Despite the battle over regulation, some common ground exists. having multiple listings. The hotel industry says it’s fine with “true” home-sharing, in which hosts rent space in their primary residence when they’re present. The biggest challenge has been whether to allow short-term rentals of second homes. Denver, Phoenix and Seattle say yes, while New York and San Francisco have largely banned the practice, with D.C. voting on it today. The bill would curtail shortterm rentals that “take properties off the market for tenants for the long term,” said council member Kenyan R. McDuffie, DWard 5, who introduced the bill. McDuffie said passage of the bill — which creates a license for short-term rentals — ought to encourage the city’s zoning commission to revise regulations that discourage home-sharing “We’re sending a message that we want it to be legal,” McDuffie said. The Catholic Archdiocese of Washington on Monday released a list of 28 priests credibly accused of abuse since 1948, saying in a letter to clergy that the move is “a necessary step towards full transparency and accountability.” The letter says “there has not been an incident of abuse of a minor by a priest of the archdiocese in almost two decades.” It does not say when recent accusers came forward or how many victims there are, nor whether the cases were taken to civil authorities. The letter comes days after Cardinal Donald Wuerl retired after criticism that he had mishandled abuse allegations. (TWP)

NOAA map reveals region’s hot spots
FINAL PERFORMANCES!
Temperatures can vary by up to 17 degrees in different parts of D.C.
A PLAY ABOUT COMIC GENIUS
REGION Temperatures were off to the races in late August when cars whizzed around D.C. and Baltimore, armed with digital sensors, scoping out which parts of these sweaty cities swelter the most. Data was logged every second, 75,000 measurements were processed and then mapped, and now we know that Northeast D.C. and central Baltimore are afflicted by the most punishing heat on hot summer days. The data was collected as part of a field campaign funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to better understand the urban heat island effect in the two cities. Heat islands are caused by high concentrations of asphalt and concrete, which pump up temperatures. The project identified the neighborhoods of Queens Chapel, Michigan Park and Bloomingdale in D.C. and Penn-Fallsway, Middle East and Milton-Montford in Baltimore as the hottest. The cool spots, in contrast, tended to coincide with shady, tree-lined parks. In D.C., they were Rock Creek Park and the National Arboretum, and in Baltimore, Herring Run Park and Druid Hill Park. The maps not only revealed the

Temperatures varied across sections of the city by as much as 17 degrees when the field campaign was conducted in Washington on Aug. 28, one of the summer’s hottest days. Several neighborhoods saw temperatures shoot up to 102 degrees. But other locations, also within the confines
of the District, hit merely 85 — a cool snap by comparison. “In D.C., we were surprised by the clear boundary between green spaces and developed areas,” said Vivek Shandas, who led the temperature collection effort and mapped the data for NOAA. “[T]he National Arboretum and areas of Ivy City and Brentwood contain a difference of 10F within just a few city blocks.” JASON SAMENOW (THE WASHINGTON POST)

A couple weeks ago, I saw Carol Regier on the news. Her husband, 64-year-old Thomas Hollowell, died last month when a speeding driver struck him on Constitution Avenue NW. According to police, who made an arrest on Friday, Hollowell was hit as he rode his bike across 12th Street NW on Sept. 24. The driver was a 20-year-old Suitland, Md., man who ran a red light “at a high rate of speed.” Hollowell was the 27th bicyclist or pedestrian to die on D.C.’s streets this year, making a mockery of Mayor Muriel Bowser’s “Vision Zero” goal of eliminating road deaths and serious traffic injuries by 2024. The total hit 28 when a 70-year-old woman died Friday after being hit by a pickup truck while walking in a crosswalk at 15th and H streets NW. As I watched Regier plead with drivers to slow down, I felt my anger rise — as it does daily each time I’m nearly hit by cars while walking in this city. It happens most often when I’m trying to cross the street with the walk sign. Apparently, a lot of drivers are unable to grasp that when they have a green light, pedestrians on their right have the walk signal. I theorized to Peter Koonce, who’s in charge of traffic lights in Portland, Ore., that a lot of suburban drivers aren’t used to looking for pedestrians. “Oh, I think they see you,” he countered. “It’s a bullying
thing.” I’m not alone in thinking something fundamental has to change here to make the streets safer and encourage more people to walk or bike, as other cities have already done. At a hearing three days after Hollowell was killed, one person after another, for five hours, told D.C. City Council members about getting hit by cars. Alex Baca, an activist with the Coalition for Smarter Growth, said her jaw was broken when she was hit by a car while riding her bike. A third of the people in her office have been hit by cars, she said. Many vented that the city isn’t putting in bike lanes fast enough or taking other measures to make biking or walking safer. “Frankly, right now no one believes Vision Zero is a serious undertaking,” City Councilman Charles Allen, D-Ward 6, said at the hearing. In a series of emails and phone conversations after the hearing, city transportation officials argued that the city is, in fact, taking steps to protect pedestrians. Sixty-two of the 87 traffic projects the city has undertaken over the past three years were aimed at improving pedestrian safety, said Wasim Raja, associate director of the city’s traffic engineering and signals division. That includes adding 48 leading pedestrian intervals at intersections, so that pedestrians crossing the street get a walk signal a few seconds before cars making a right get a green light. Ideally,

this means drivers will be more likely to yield. But John Townsend, a lobbyist for the American Automobile Association, said at the hearing that the city has become too reliant on traffic cameras, and doesn’t have enough officers on the street enforcing traffic laws. He said drivers tend to drive with halos over their heads in the areas where they know there are cameras. “But if I don’t know where the police officer is, I’m going to mind my P’s and Q’s whenever I drive around the city,” Townsend added. Other U.S. cities about D.C.’s size, like Portland, Ore., seem to have a different mindset about their streets, one that prioritizes pedestrian safety over speed of traffic. are generally based on cars going the 25 mph speed limit. In Portland’s downtown, lights are timed for vehicles to hit green lights by going 13 mph. In a phone call, Koonce said his city did this because it wants to slow cars down and create an environment conducive to walking. Basing signals in D.C. at much slower speeds, as Portland does, would have a “very large impact to the roadways,” Raja said, affecting not only cars but buses, recalling the tie-ups on Montgomery County streets in 2009 when a computer glitch threw the coordination of signals out of whack. But Koonce said disaster hasn’t befallen Portland. Clearly, D.C. isn’t doing enough. Twenty-eight people have died this year, and there most likely will be more.
Q. Metro’s website says an escalator at the Court House station will be out of service until Oct. 31, 2019. Halloween, 2019? Trick, right? Is the escalator between the Wilson Boulevard entrance and the tunnel that goes to the fare gates really going to be out for another year? A. We went to the station and saw that one up escalator and one down escalator were still working alongside the out-ofservice escalator. Metro spokeswoman Sherri Ly said in an email that the dates are indeed correct. Six escalators at the station are being replaced over the next year, and contractors are using the out-of-service escalator’s shaft to move materials in and out of the station. “It is the safest and best access point to bring heavy escalator components into the work site,” she wrote. By using the shaft, “we can keep the station open and minimize customer inconvenience.” Not closing entrances entirely to fix escalators is a concern for Metro. Closing an entrance would “have significant ridership impacts that continue after the entrances are re-opened,” said a May staff report on how to grow rail and bus ridership. KERY MURAKAMI (EXPRESS)

‘Rogue killers’ at fault? After call with Saudi king, Trump floats theory on presumed murder of Khashoggi At trial, Harvard says race only helps applicants
GETTY IMAGES
WASHINGTON In a comment that could give Saudi officials a route to climb down from outright denials, President Trump suggested Monday that “rogue killers” could be responsible for the disappearance and presumed murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who hasn’t been seen since entering the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul two weeks ago. Trump’s comment came after a 20-minute phone call with Saudi Arabia’s King Salman in which Trump said the king adamantly denied any knowledge of what happened to Khashoggi. Trump announced that he had dispatched Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to the kingdom — and anywhere else necessary — to get to the bottom of the apparent demise of Khashoggi, a Saudi who had been living and working in the United States. “The king firmly denied any knowledge of it,” Trump told reporters as he left the White House for a trip to survey hurricane damage in Florida and Georgia. Trump said he didn’t “want to get into [Salman’s] mind,” but told reporters: “It sounded to me like maybe these could have been rogue killers. “I mean, who knows? We’re going to try getting to the bottom of it very soon, but his was a flat denial.” The comments marked a break from the Trump administration’s strenuous refusal to speculate over what happened to Khashoggi and came with Trump under growing pressure to take action on the case of the Saudi writer, who was a contributor to The Washington Post and wrote columns critical of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The kingdom has called the allegations of foul play “baseless” but has offered no evidence the writer left the consulate. The probe moved forward Monday when Turkish crime scene investigators entered the Saudi Consulate. It was an extraordinary search of a diplomatic post that is otherwise considered foreign soil under international law. Certain areas of the consulate were to remain off-limits, although officials were to inspect surveillance cameras within the post, Turkish media reported. had happened to Khashoggi. The crown prince, ambitious, aggressive and just 33 in a kingdom long ruled by aging monarchs, has considerable sway in Saudi government actions. He and Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner, have forged close ties. Trump last week vowed to uncover the truth about what happened to Khashoggi and promised “severe punishment” for those responsible. But he has said repeatedly that he does not want to halt a proposed $110 billion arms sale to Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia has pledged to retaliate economically for any U.S. punitive action. Sens. BOSTON Harvard University intentionally uses a vague “personal rating” to reject Asian-American applicants in favor of students of other racial backgrounds, according to a trial that started Monday and carries weighty implications for dozens of other U.S. colleges. Harvard’s legal team denied any discrimination in its opening statement, saying race is just one factor that’s considered and can only help a student’s chances of getting admitted. In its hourlong opening, lawyers for Students for Fair Admissions accused Harvard of intentionally discriminating against Asian-Americans through a “personal rating” score that’s used to measures character traits such as “courage” and “likability.” The suit says Asian-American applicants bring stronger academic records than any other race, yet they are admitted at the lowest rate. The group says that’s because Harvard consistently gives them low scores on the personal rating, which, according to a document revealed by the group Monday, is only loosely defined in Harvard policies. The trial began nearly four years after Harvard was sued by Students for Fair Admissions, a nonprofit in Arlington, Va., that believes schools should not consider race when selecting students. It comes at a time when the nation’s elite colleges have come under mounting scrutiny over the way race factors into the admissions process. COLLIN BINKLEY (AP)

Iconic retailer Sears files for bankruptcy Company plans to close 142 of 700-plus stores, cut thousands of jobs

BUSINESS Before there was Amazon — or, for that matter, Home Depot or Walmart — there was Sears. From its beginnings as a mailorder watch business in Minneapolis 132 years ago, the company grew to become America’s everything-under-one-roof store and the biggest retailer in the world. For generations of Americans, the brick-like Sears, Roebuck and Co. catalog was a fixture in just about every house — a miscellany of toys and clothes and furnishings and hardware. “It was the Amazon of its day,” said Mark Cohen, a professor of retailing at Columbia University and a former Sears executive. But plagued by falling sales and heavy debt, Sears filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization Monday and announced plans to close 142 of its 700-plus remaining stores and eliminate thousands of jobs in a bid to stay afloat, if only for a while. “In our view, too much rot has set in at Sears to make it [a] viable business,” Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData Retail, said in a note to investors. Its bankruptcy was years in the making. Sears diversified too

much. It kept cutting costs and let its stores become fusty in the face of competition from the likes of Walmart and Target. And though it expanded onto the internet, it was no match for Amazon. “In point of fact,” Cohen said, “they’ve been dead for a very long time.” In its bankruptcy filing, Sears Holdings, which operates both Sears and Kmart stores, listed assets of $1 billion to $10 billion and liabilities of $10 billion to $50 billion. It said it has lined up $300 million in financing from banks to keep operating and is negotiating an additional $300 million loan. fewer than 90,000 as of earlier this year. At its peak, it had 4,000 stores in 2012; it will now be left with a little more than 500. There was a time when you could find just about anything for your house in the Sears catalog — including a house. Between 1908 and 1940, the company sold about 75,000 build-from-a-kit houses, many of which are still standing. “It’s hard to imagine now how isolating it was to live in a small town 100 years ago, 120 years ago,” said Marc Levinson, author of “The Great A&P and the Struggle for Small Business in America.” “What Sears did was make big-city merchandise available to people in small towns.” ALLEN G. Guarding Confederate icons U.S. quietly spending millions on private security at cemeteries WASHINGTONPOST.COM THE FIX
Warren, Trump spar over DNA test results
ERIC ALBRECHT (AP)
WASHINGTON After last year’s deadly clash between white nationalists and counter-protesters in Charlottesville, Va., the federal government quietly spent millions of dollars to hire private security guards to stand watch over at least eight Confederate cemeteries, documents from the Department of Veterans Affairs show. The security effort, which runs around the clock at all but one of those VA-operated cemeteries, was aimed at preventing the kind of damage that befell Confederate memorials across the U.S. in the aftermath of the Charlottesville violence. None of the guarded cemeteries has been vandalized since the security was put in place. Records obtained by The Associated Press through the Freedom of Information Act show that the VA has spent nearly $3 million on cemetery security since August 2017. Another $1.6 million is budgeted for fiscal 2019 to pay for security at all Confederate monuments, which could include other sites. The agency has not determined when the security will cease. Private security was needed “to ensure the safety of staff, property and visitors paying respect to those interred,” Jessic a Sch iefer, spokes woman for the VA’s National
A Confederate soldier statue in Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery in Columbus, Ohio, was vandalized in 2017.
Cemetery Administration, said in a statement. Most of the protected cemeteries are in the North, in places far removed from the Confederacy. Vast numbers of the buried soldiers were prisoners of war who were held nearby. Many succumbed to smallpox and other diseases. The cemetery monuments are typically simple and solemn, serving more to acknowledge the deceased than to celebrate the slaveholding region they defended. Government watchdog groups and some members of Congress question if the spending is still necessary. Steve Ellis, executive vice president of the nonpartisan
Taxpayers for Common Sense, said the cost of security represents the sort of “spending inertia” too common in government. “Unfortunately, what happens with the government is once you start spending money on something, you generally continue to spend money on it,” Ellis said. Monuments to the Confederacy have become especially polarizing since nine black parishioners were gunned down by an avowed white supremacist at a church in Charleston, S.C., in 2015. The confrontation in Charlottesville on Aug. 11, 2017, reopened the wound. In the weeks that followed, vandals damaged Confederate sites across the
country, and cemeteries were not spared. Schiefer did not directly answer questions about why the eight cemeteries were chosen, but said the National Cemetery Administration “routinely monitors the need for additional protection and security at all of its sites.” Decisions, she said, are based on factors such as historical significance, replacement and repair value, and previous vandalism or threats of vandalism at particular sites. Whether because of the added security or other reasons, no vandalism has occurred at any of the cemeteries since an August 2017 incident in Springfield, Mo., the VA said. JIM SALTER (AP)

At a July 5 rally in Montana, President Trump went on a rant about Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and her claim to Native American ancestry. Trump told the crowd he looked forward to making Warren, a rumored 2020 presidential candidate, “prove” her heritage on the debate stage. “I’m going to get one of those little [DNA testing] kits,” Trump said. “And we will say, ‘I will give you a million dollars to your favorite charity, paid for by Trump, if you take the test and it shows you’re an Indian.’ “ On Monday, Warren called Trump’s months-long bluff by releasing a DNA test that suggested she did have a distant Native American ancestor. “Remember saying on 7/5 that you’d give $1M to a charity of my choice if my DNA showed Native American ancestry?” she tweeted. “I remember — and here’s the verdict. Please send the check to the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center.” Trump on Monday denied he had ever made the promise. “Who cares?” he said when asked about the DNA results. When asked about the donation, Trump said, “I didn’t say that.” Later Monday, Trump was again asked about the donation, and said he would “only do it if I can test her personally.” He added, “That will not be something I enjoy doing either.” AMY B WANG

Study: Global warming will even hurt beer

In Hurricane Michael’s wake, no end to misery As Trump visits Florida’s Panhandle, residents focus on slow recovery MEXICO BEACH, FLA. Residents of hurricane-ravaged communities in Florida’s Panhandle turned to volunteers and each other for help Monday, the fifth day without cell service, electricity or, in many cases, shelter. Trevor Lewis, a member of a search and rescue unit, said he watched storm victims “cry out in joy” when his team let them use their cellphones to contact loved ones. “The amount of stress that people are in, not just from losing everything, but not having phones, power, food, water, puts a huge toll on the ... people stuck

in these houses,” Lewis said. As President Trump visited the devastated zone, the death toll from Michael’s march from Florida to Virginia stood at 17, with one confirmed death so far in Mexico Beach, a town of about 1,000 people that was nearly wiped off the map in a direct hit from the hurricane and its 155 mph winds last week. City Clerk Adrian Welle told local media that 46 people in Mexico Beach were still unaccounted for. Trump took a helicopter tour over Mexico Beach and also saw the badly damaged Tyndall Air Force base. After landing in Panama City, he visited Lynn Haven, another hard-hit city. Trump walked up to a house where a massive pine tree lay on the front yard. The owner, Michael Rollins,
told Trump he rode out the storm. “I knew I had made my commitment to stay with my animals. I have two dogs and a parrot,” Rollins told the president. Some in the affected area were lukewarm about Trump’s visit. About 5 miles from a neighborhood Trump visited, Sheila Vann, 57, sat on a cooler in her garage, taking a break from cleaning up. The hurricane tore off much of her roof in Panama City, and most of her ceiling collapsed after soaking up the storm’s rain. Plus there were four freezers filled with fish and meat that were starting to spoil and smell. “You want to see the president?” Vann asked her husband, Joseph, with a dismissive tone. “I ain’t got time, unless he wants to help clean up.” RUSS BYNUM (AP)
Add beer to the list of life’s little pleasures, like wine and chocolate, that global warming will make scarcer and costlier, scientists say. Increasing extreme heat waves and droughts in the future will hurt production of barley, a key beer ingredient. Losses of barley yield can be as much as 17 percent, and beer prices on average would double, even adjusting for inflation, according to a study in Monday’s journal Nature Plants. Study coauthor Steve Davis of the University of California, Irvine, said the research was done to drive home the message that climate change will affect our daily lives. (AP)
FORGOING MEDICAL CARE
The proportion of low-income people in states that did not expand Medicaid under the Obamaera Affordable Care Act who said they passed up needed medical care in the past 12 months because they couldn’t afford it, a government report released Monday found. That compared to 9.4 percent in states that expanded the program. Under the law, states may expand Medicaid for low-income people making up to roughly $16,750 for an individual or $34,640 for a family of four. Seventeen states have not adopted the expansion. Budget deficit increases to $779 billion for 2018 America’s budget deficit hit $779 billion in 2018, the federal government said Monday, as higher spending and stagnating tax revenue pushed the nation’s debt burden higher. Early picks for awards With the NBA season beginning tonight — and Golden State once again favored to win it all, this time by beating Boston in the finals — here are predictions for individual awards. (THE WASHINGTON POST)
3
NBA gets a fresh script LeBron opts for new role in L.A., giving East contenders an easier path to the finals NBA When the NBA season begins tonight, it will be the first time in more than a decade that LeBron James won’t be playing on opening night. For the first time in 15 years, he also won’t be part of the Eastern Conference. Those firsts show just how much his offseason decision to join the Los Angeles Lakers shook up the league. Anyone associated with making money in basketball should be thrilled to see James playing for the flagship franchise, a team whose success lifts all boats around it. And the teams atop the East finally can see daylight in a conference James has reigned over since creating a superpower in Miami eight years ago. Two of those teams, the Celtics and 76ers, will revisit their long rivalry tonight, taking James’ customary place in the East’s half of TNT’s opening doubleheader. This is the moment the Celtics have been building toward since making the blockbuster trade that sent Kevin Garnett
and Paul Pierce to the Brooklyn Nets in 2013. With a roster teeming with young, athletic players, a gifted scorer in Kyrie Irving, one of the league’s most versatile big men in Al Horford and one of its best coaches in Brad Stevens, good luck finding something not to like about the Celtics. Philadelphia has what could become the league’s best one-two punch in Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons, as well as the potential to add another max contract in free agency next summer. Not to say that Boston and Philadelphia are locks to reach the East finals. The Raptors lurk in the shadows, with Kawhi Leonard again looking like a possible top-five talent, and with a roster that might even exceed Boston’s in length and depth. Because LeBron is three time zones away, anything seems possible. As for James, his Lakers might have trouble even making the playoffs. But with James surrounded by young talents such as Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball, Kyle Kuzma and Josh Hart
Key openers TONIGHT 76ers at Celtics (8 p.m., TNT): Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward, healthy again, rejoin a loaded Celtics team facing another East power. Thunder at Warriors (10:30 p.m., TNT): Golden State, favored to three-peat, will get even better when new big man DeMarcus Cousins returns from injury.
WEDNESDAY Pelicans at Rockets (8 p.m., ESPN): Houston lost defensive stoppers and added Carmelo Anthony. Hmm …
THURSDAY Heat at Wizards (8 p.m., NBCSWA): Washington has more star power than Miami, but both teams will scramble to avoid the middle of the pack. The availability of new Wizards center Dwight Howard (buttocks injury) remains in doubt. Lakers at Trail Blazers (10:30 p.m., TNT): All eyes will be on LeBron James making his debut for Los Angeles. (EXPRESS)
Wizards send G Jodie Meeks, cash to Bucks and swap second-round picks
— plus mercurial veterans Rajon Rondo, Lance Stephenson, Michael Beasley and JaVale McGee — the Lakers will be interesting even if they aren’t that good. James’ move has even managed to overshadow the Warriors, who are trying to become the first team in five decades to make it to the NBA Finals five times in a row. The Rockets seem to have taken a step back in their quest to unseat Golden State. They lost key defensive forwards Trevor Ariza and Luc Mbah a Moute in free agency, and replaced them with Carmelo Anthony and James Ennis. But the Jazz might be able to prove that their blistering close last season (29-6 in their final 35 games) wasn’t a mirage, and that second-year guard Donovan Mitchell can lead Utah deep in the playoffs. Beyond that, a glut of teams will simply be trying to make the playoffs in the cutthroat West. James and the Lakers are ju s t o ne of t h o s e te a m s .
Rookie of the Year Luka Doncic, Mavericks
The 6-foot-7 Slovenian is perfect for the NBA’s era of position-less basketball. Trae Young (Hawks) and Deandre Ayton (Suns) also contend.
2 Sixth Man of the Year Marcus Smart, Celtics
His tough defense and attitude make him perfect for his backcourt role. His limited offense won’t be an issue on this high-octane club.
1 Most Valuable Player Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bucks
With LeBron in L.A. and the Bucks ready to improve, the timing is perfect for the Greek Freak, who is still only 23 and at 6-foot-11 can fill any role.

fit fit Adults are flocking to recumbent tricycles, like this one from Sun Seeker Bicycles.
Try the tri on for size up on the pedals and really get after it,” he says. “Here, you’re sitting.” But riding a trike enables the Mount Airy resident to stay active after two hip replacements and three back surgeries. Trikes for adults aren’t new, but they’re finding a larger fan base among recreational and serious cyclists. Sleeker, more aerodynamic, lower-to-theground designs are a far cry from the traditional “granny trikes,” with high seats and large baskets in back, though those are still around. “The big growth is not in the old, traditional upright trike,” says bike expert Jay Townley. “The growth is in what is referred to as a recumbent trike, or tri.” No group seems to keep statistics on the market. But shop owners and manufacturers say they are seeing an increase in sales. TerraTrike, which has been making adult trikes since 1996, has growth of 10 to 40 percent each year. And three trike brands — Catrike, Sun Bicycles and TerraTrike — were on the National Bicycle Dealers Association’s list
On the road Tricyclists, like bicyclists, must follow traffic laws. They also must follow local bike regulations on helmet and light or reflector use. They can share bike lanes. Larry Black, owner of Mt. Airy Bicycles, warns against riding recumbent trikes alongside cars. “It’s dangerous because your head is below the average car fender … and you can’t see,” he said. S.K.
last year of the top 40 brands that specialty bike shops sell. Trikes for adults come in a variety of models and styles. Some are made for speed, some have more upright seats, and some aren’t quite so low to the ground. They range widely in price, including one-speed classic uprights for about $400 and 30-speed recumbents with aluminum frames for around $4,000. The main market driver is an aging, health-focused population — but also, recumbent “trikes are cool,” says Larry Black, owner of Mt. Airy Bicycles. “It’s like a gokart or a roller coaster,” he says.

How to choose the ideal snack
Recumbent cycles have a lower center of gravity than upright ones, which makes them more stable and comfortable, says Jeff Yonker, marketing director at Michigan-based TerraTrike. “We find that people will actually do as much or more exercise riding as [they would on] an upright bike because they don’t have the pain involved, and so they tend to ride longer and farther,” Yonker says. The ergonomics of recumbent bicycles and tricycles are the same, but trikes are easier to balance and don’t tip when you stop, says Wayne Sosin, president of Worksman Cycles in Queens, N.Y. At Black’s two stores, recumbent trikes are outselling recumbent two-wheelers about 10 to 1, and they’re outselling upright trikes at about the same rate. When Quinn returns from his test ride in Mount Airy, he is beaming. “This is fantastic. This is something that we could both do,” he says, thinking of his grandson. He ends up buying a recumbent trike. STEPHANIE KANOWITZ
Snacking is not inherently bad. In healthy, normal-weight people, snacking seems to help with meeting daily energy needs and incorporating more nutrients. The ideal snack has three key nutrients: fiber, protein and healthy fat. This trifecta keeps you full longer and stabilizes blood sugar, helping to keep cravings at bay. Ideally, you want to choose whole foods to check off each nutrient. Prepackaged snacks often contain added sugars, sodium and saturated or trans fats. Instead, aim for fresh produce. You can also add a starch if you need something more substantial. Keep the fiber high by opting for whole-grain options or crackers made from seeds, beans or lentils. For protein, choose nuts or seeds, natural nut butter, roasted chickpeas, edamame, Greek yogurt or preportioned cheese.

After neck surgery, Quinn tires quickly on a bike, and the boy has trouble balancing on a two-wheeler. “It’s in first gear,” Tom Hill tells Freddy, situating him on a seven-gear Delta model priced at $1,399. “Here’s your hand brake.” He sounds like a salesman, but Hill, 61, of Damascus, Md., doesn’t work at the shop. He’s a frequent customer, having bought three trikes in nine years after undergoing back surgery. “I like this better. My back doesn’t hurt; my upper body isn’t tired from having to control the bike,” Hill says. Customer Lynn Carr, 70, a former bike rider and runner, is less enthusiastic. “You really can’t get the same level of aggressive riding as you can on a two-wheeler, just simply because on a two-wheeler you can stand

She’s controlling but can’t admit it Q. What do you do when you know your wife is controlling, but she denies it or doesn’t see herself that way, even when others do? That’s often the very nature of being controlling: wanting to see things your way and your way only, making excuses to dismiss the perspectives of others as wrong or unimportant. You have to decide for yourself whether you want to live this way. What do you think you deserve in a relationship? (Hint: At the very least, it’s not to be controlled.) So how many discussions will you attempt to have? Will you try to get her into couples counseling? Will you set a time deadline before
beginning to leave? Will you see if she’s willing to make small changes first? Only you can decide what’s best, but you’ll be strongest through this process if you have some support yourself. Lean on the trusted people who already know what’s what, and consider professional support of your own. If she is unwilling to look at her behavior and change her ways, then extricating yourself from this relationship may not be easy, but it will very likely be worth it. Thehotline.org can help.
First, do damage control with your boss. Speak to him directly and clearly about the specifics of how this will affect your work, outlining your goals of the conversation beforehand, and conveying your priorities about your responsibilities or inclusion on certain projects. The sooner you have this conversation, the more you can keep your boss’s reaction reasonable and keep the train on the rails. Then, have a conversation with your co-worker about how you appreciate her apology, but that you need time to process how this went down (code for “Give me space; I’m still stewing and there’s nothing you should try to do about it). Finally, give yourself permission to re-evaluate the line between personal and professional friendships at work, especially with those who are prone to these mistakes. Send questions to Dr. Andrea Bonior at baggage@wpost .com. Andrea is a licensed clinical psychologist and hosts a live chat Tuesdays at 1 p.m. at washingtonpost.com. Your questions may be used in the chats.

These 3 memoirs are here to liven your day
‘Sherlock’ duo sink their teeth into ‘Dracula’
Memoirs have arrived from the trio of Ellie Kemper, Phoebe Robinson and Busy Philipps. Robinson presents “lots of opinions about the minutiae” — as do Kemper and Philipps. “Considering the selfstarting dumpster fire that is the world right now, focusing on the minutiae can be especially sooth-

ing and a welcome distraction,” Robinson explains. Well said. RACHEL ROSENBLIT (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

Ellie Kemper
Busy Philipps
Phoebe Robinson
Ellie Kemper has played so many wide-eyed optimists so exceptionally well that it’s hard to imagine she’s sketched them from scratch. And in various essays throughout her autobiographical collection, which came out earlier this month, Kemper reveals herself to be a “carefree, happy-go-lucky sweetie.” In other words, the veritable kindred spirit of her alter egos. But what those incredulous characters likely don’t share with the real Kemper is her knack for satire — her essays aren’t so much earnest recollections as caricaturesque sendups. Kemper’s musings run the gamut, dwelling on topics such as her devotion to SoulCycle, her failed “Saturday Night Live” audition and the famed “Bridesmaids” vomit scene. Overall, these thoughts are a bit like her characters — maybe not the most substantive or compelling, but charming when you least expect it.
Despite some indelible TV roles, Busy Philipps is most famous these days for playing herself. Her beloved, unfiltered Instagram stories clearly enticed d the publishers of her memoir, which comes out today. For their ir sake, and that of her 1.3 million Instagram followers, Philipps gamely opens up about her sometimes-fraught family life in suburban Arizona, her devastating ng early sexual experiences and all the he withering ways the industry has broken her heart. Philipps is fed up with Hollywood’s sexist hierarchies es and doesn’t hesitate to drop names es of the men she feels have abused their perch, including her “Freaks and Geeks” co-star James Franco, “Modern Family” creator Steven Levitan and director Quentin Tarantino. For fans who hang on to her every tip, Philipps’ unabashed unabashedness is exactly what they came for.
In the two years since Phoebe Robinson released her best-selling essay collection, “You Can’t Touch My Hair: And Other Things I Still Have to Explain,” the 34-year-old has co-starred in a movie and played phone tag with Oprah. But if you imagine Robinson’s rising star would make her insights any less relatable in her second collection, which hits shelves today, you’d be wrong. She peppers artfully comic anecdotes with in-on-the-joke abbreviations, winky hashtags and side-winding footnotes. Even when she gets serious, doling out hard-won insights about money, body-shaming or the challenges interracial couples face, Robinson keeps her wits about her. Yes, there’s room for levity amid the “Major Trash that’s the world right now” — and thankfully, Robinson’s sophomore effort has more than enough to go around.
Solange says new album will be released this fall
“Sherlock” co-creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat are developing a limited series about the iconic vampire Dracula, Netflix and the BBC announced Monday. The series, simply titled “Dracula,” will consist of three 90-minute episodes set in 1897 Transylvania and London. “There have always been stories about great evil,” Gatiss and Moffat said in a statement. “What’s special about Dracula is that Bram Stoker gave evil its own hero.” The show will air on BBC One in the U.K. and on Netflix elsewhere. “We can’t wait to bring Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss’ brilliant storytelling to our members around the world and we are eager to collaborate on yet another series with the BBC, BBC,” Netflix executive Larry Tanz said. ‘Kinky Boots’ writer to pen Winehouse biopic “Kinky Boots” writer Geoff Deane is writing an Amy Winehouse biopic after the late singer’s family signed a deal to join the project as executive producers, The Guardian reported Monday. Shooting is scheduled to start in 2019. The news comes after Winehouse’s father told Reuters last week that she would be appearing as a hologram during an upcoming tour. (EXPRESS) TV
Freeman to co-create, star in FX comedy series Martin Freeman and Daisy Haggard will star in the FX comedy series “Breeders,” the network announced Sunday. Created by Freeman, along with “Veep’s” Simon Blackwell and Chris Addison, the series will premiere with a 10-episode first season in 2020. According to FX, Freeman will play “a caring father discovering he’s not quite the man he thought he was.” Blackwell will serve as the showrunner. (EXPRESS) #METOO
Singer preemptively denies accusations Director Bryan Singer denied allegations he expects to be published in Esquire, writing in an Instagram post Monday that the article will “attempt to rehash false accusations and bogus lawsuits.” Singer has faced several sexual abuse accusations, including a claim in a lawsuit last year that he raped a 17-year-old boy in 2003. “What Esquire is attempting to do is a reckless disregard for the truth, making assumptions that are fictional and irresponsible.” (EXPRESS)

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You may have to be a little more explicit as you give instructions today. Not all of your intentions will be clear. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Giving someone else “one last chance” isn’t likely to have the effect you desire. You will want to try a more conciliatory tone, perhaps. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Now is the time for you to make crystal clear the meaning behind your more “mysterious” behavior. You’ll win a lot of support.
MONDAY’S SOLUTION
MONDAY’S SOLUTION
FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You’ll benefit from someone else’s ideas today — and together you can make something happen that benefits others. ARIES (March 21-April 19) Your quick judgment of someone isn’t likely to pan out today. He or she may very well win you over completely before all is said and done.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Those who are at cross purposes today may look to you for guidance. You can see things in a way that they can’t. CANCER (June 21-July 22) The verdict is in and you’ll have to do whatever is required to make amends if the decision is against you.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are expecting their first child in the spring, Kensington Palace said Monday as the couple arrived for a visit to Australia. The child, who will be seventh in line for the British throne, would assume the title of lord or lady rather than prince or princess because of a 1917 decree issued by King George V that limited titles for members of the royal family. The queen has the power to change that, however, as she did with Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, the children of Prince William and Kate Middleton. (AP/WASHINGTON POST)
