D[m Oeha Seventy-year-old Phyllis Coelho plunged her blue gloved hands into a plastic sink of gray soapy water and spent an afternoon last week cheerfully washing dishes “to support the revolution.” The retired social worker had traveled from Belfast, Maine, the day before with her 78-year-old friend Jane Sanford. They headed directly to the protest at Zuccotti Park because, they said, it was time to “show up.” At a table behind her, Nan Terrie, an 18-year-old law student from Orlando, Fla., was furiously chopping carrots and onions even as she juggled cell phone calls from people wanting to donate food and handed hastily scribbled “to do” lists for other volunteers. Anj Ferrara, a 24-year-old artist, was tearing open some of the 40 boxed pizzas that had just arrived. And Tom Hintze, a 24-year-old bike tour guide, was trying to figure out the logistics of getting a truck and driver to pick up massive trays of pulled pork from Brooklyn. Occupy Wall Street’s makeshift ‘kitchen’ feeds thousands daily
Occupy Wall Street protesters line up for breakfast last week in New York’s Zuccotti Park.
;dZb[ii <h[[" <h[i^ >[bf_d]i Truckloads of fresh fruit and vegetables from organic farms in upstate New York, Vermont and Massachusetts arrive daily for the Occupy Wall Street protesters. Steaming containers of chicken and rice, burritos and lasagna; and tubs of Ben and Jerry’s chocolate and cookie dough ice cream arrived one sunny morning, and there is a seemingly never-ending delivery of pizza pies from supporters all over the world. sands daily even as it scrambles to figure out how to deal with an endless flow of donations. There’s no oven or refrigerator or stove, but the people who work there — and those they serve — say it is much more, imbuing it with the same fervor that has marked the protests from the beginning. Shane Stoops has also been helping in the kitchen since the beginning. The self-described “Renaissance man” from Washington state says he has always been a bit “radical” and always had a testy relationship with his dad, a shipyard pipefitter. “For the first time in his life, my father told me he was proud of me for standing up for something I believe in,” said Stoops, 23. “Feeding people is a beautiful thing, but so was hearing those words.” HELEN O’NEILL (AP)

Republican presidential hopeful Herman Cain has cast himself as the outsider, the pizza magnate with real-world experience who will bring fresh ideas to the nation’s capital. But Cain’s economic ideas, support and organization have close ties to two billionaire brothers who bankroll right-leaning causes through their group Americans for Prosperity. Cain’s campaign manager and a number of aides have worked for Americans for Prosperity, or AFP, the advocacy group founded with support from billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch that lobbies for lower taxes and less government regulation and spending. Cain credits businessman Rich Low-

rie, who served on an AFP advisory board, with helping devise his “9-9-9” plan to rewrite the nation’s tax code. And his years of speaking at AFP events have given the businessman and radio host a network of loyal grassroots fans. Once little-known, Cain’s political activities are getting fresh scrutiny these days since he soared to the
top of some national polls. His links to the Koch brothers could undercut his outsider, non-political image among people who detest politics as usual and candidates connected with the party machine. A spokeswoman for the Koch brothers did not respond to The Associated Press’ request for comment on Cain. RYAN J. FOLEY (AP)

While Herman Cain is quick to promote his career at the helm of the Godfather’s Pizza chain, his ties to AFP aren’t something the candidate appears eager to highlight. His campaign did not respond to repeated messages seeking comment between Thursday and Sunday, and Cain does not include his AFP work on his biography on his website. But Cain continues to work with the group. (AP)

Ahmad Ghargory, commander of a revolutionary brigade, said the area will be turned into a public park accessible to all Libyans. “It’s the revolutionary decision to tear down this symbol of tyranny,” Ghargory said. “We were busy with the war, but now we have the space to do this.” Already, the courtyard in front

of the house, once used for Gadhafi’s fiery speeches, is now a weekly pet market. City residents roam the premises as if at a museum, with vendors selling souvenirs. The compound, now gutted, was a main target for NATO airstrikes in the months ahead of Gadhafi’s ouster. Saleh: Foreign Officials Misrepresent Yemeni Crisis IWdÉW" O[c[d Yemen’s embattled president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, charged Sunday that foreign diplomats have been misled by the country’s opposition and are conveying false information about the situation in Yemen. Saleh’s criticism came before a scheduled meeting this week at the U.N. Security Council to discuss a
resolution calling for a cease-fire and transfer of power. In his speech broadcast on Yemeni state TV, Saleh described the opposition as “insane [people] who can’t sleep and only want to take power.” Saleh’s remarks came as his security forces fired at protesters marching through the capital and a southern city, killing at least
five people, according to a medical official. In the past two days in San‘a, snipers killed 10 troops of renegade army general Ali Mohsen alAhmar, who defected months ago, al-Ahmar said in a statement. Saleh clings to power despite more than nine months of street protests, inspired by popular uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt. (AP)

Virginia officials and the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission said last week they are close to a deal that would release millions of dollars that’s been withheld since July for area transit agencies. The NVTC said it had been seeking clarification in a new contract that state officials wanted it to sign to give Virginia more representation on some local transportation boards. Virginia’s Department of Rail and Public Transportation has withheld nearly $30 million from the NVTC, and the amount is expected to grow to $40 million by the middle of this month, according to the NVTC. Thelma D. Drake,
director of the DRPT, had said the state would not release the funds until the NVTC signed the deal. Fifty-four entities across the state were asked to sign the amended transit contracts with the state. Only the NVTC, Fairfax, Arlington and Alexandria have refused, state officials said.
8_bb_edi D[[Z[Z The American Society of Civil Engineers has estimated that an investment of $1.7 trillion is needed between now and 2020 to rebuild roads, bridges, water lines, sewage systems and dams that are reaching the end of their planned life cycles. (T WP)
The NVTC’s members — four of whom are Metro board members — had said they worried about violating rules for local transit agencies, including Metro. Each year, the DRPT gives $168 million to the NVTC. The
money helps fund Metro which receives $93 million; Virginia Railway Express; and bus systems in Arlington, Fairfax and Loudoun counties and Alexandria. Virginia Gov. Robert F. McDonnell appointed lawyer James Dyke in September to serve on the NVTC, which elects four representatives to the Metro board. McDonnell had long been trying to get a seat on the Metro board, saying the transit agency needed more oversight from state government. The NVTC agreed last week to appoint Dyke to the Metro board in January. Kala Quintana, NVTC’s director of communications, said the agreement from DRPT “on the face looks fine.” She said lawyers in the local jurisdictions were reviewing it to “make sure they’re comfortable with the language.” She said it would be sent to the NVTC to make sure “nobody has any major issues.” (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Crews comb woods for dead woman’s son not seen in weeks =[hcWdjemd" CZ$ Dozens of law enforcement officers, aided by volunteers and dogs trained to sniff for cadavers, are searching two parks in Montgomery County for 11-year-old William McQuain, who has been missing for two weeks and whose mother was found slain in the apartment they shared in Germantown, a Montgomery police spokesman said Sunday. As of 1:45 p.m., the officers were searching Damascus Recreational Park and Little Bennett Regional Park based on information devel-
oped during the investigation. Capt. Paul Starks said detectives hope to find William alive, but “we can’t ignore this recent information.” The search party includes five dog teams and seven mounted horse teams. “A lot of this is heavily wooded” area, Starks said. The spokesman said detectives also are following leads based on the hope William is alive. The search under way Sunday was an ominous sign, particularly for friends and family members of William’s. The body of his mother, Jane McQuain, 51, was found Wednesday inside their apartment. She died of stab wounds and blunt force trauma, police said. Police have charged her estranged husband, Curtis M. Lopez, in connection with her death. DAN MORSE (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Feds Scrutinize Gray Mayoral Campaign Federal investigators digging into irregularities in the campaign of Mayor Vincent C. Gray have interviewed several of his associates and election staff members, subpoenaed reams of documents, and granted immunity to at least one witness who testified before a grand jury, according to nearly a dozen people familiar with the probe. The criminal probe began after onetime mayoral candidate Sulaimon Brown alleged in March that he was paid by the Gray campaign to disparage then-Mayor Adrian M. Fenty during last year’s Democratic primary. Brown also claims that the Gray
campaign promised him a city job in return for his political attacks on Fenty. In addition to Brown’s allegations, investigators are examining possible irregularities in moneyorder donations to Gray’s campaign, some of which appear to have violated city campaign regulations, the sources said. The mayor and senior campaign staff members have denied any wrongdoing related to either Brown’s allegations or the moneyorder donations. Through their questioning of campaign staff members and their interest in campaign documents, investigators appear to be focusing on consultant Howard L.

Investigators hope to find out whether Vincent Gray violated campaign rules.
D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray took office with great expectations and the general goodwill of the city. But a Washington Post poll in June found that trust in him has eroded since Brown’s allegations became public and the U.S. attorney’s office began its investigation. Gray has stumbled in hiring staff — missteps at times magnified by ongoing investigations, including one by a congressional oversight committee. (AP)

An Inspired Legacy
Thousands join Obama and civil rights leaders to honor King’s memorial on the Mall MWi^_d]jed For many who helped dedicate the new Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial on Sunday in D.C., the towering granite monument is a stark reminder that the civil rights leader’s dream of social and economic justice has yet to be realized. In many ways, the ceremony was a passing of the torch to a younger generation with speeches marked by fierce rhetoric over the nation’s economic disparities. Thousands gathered at the memorial site, some as early as 5 a.m., to hear President Obama, King’s children and other civil rights leaders. Speaker after speaker invoked King’s “I Have a Dream” speech from 1963 to challenge others to carry on his fight. “Yes, my father had a dream. It was a dream, he said, that was deeply embedded in the American dream,” said King’s son Martin Luther King III. “The problem is the American dream of 50 years ago ... has turned into a nightmare for millions” who have lost their jobs and homes. The nation has “lost its soul,” he said, when it tolerates such vast economic disparities, teen bullying, and having more people of color in prison than in college. His sister, the Rev. Bernice King, said her family was proud to witness the memorial’s dedication and hopes it will spur action to solve the nation’s problems. Other speakers included union leaders, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, and Andrew Young, the former Atlanta mayor and U.N.

ambassador who was an aide to King. About 1.5 million people are estimated to have visited the memorial’s 30-foottall statue of King and its granite walls since it opened in August. The memorial is the first on the National Mall honoring a black leader. The August dedication ceremony, which was postponed due to Hurricane Irene, had been expected to draw 250,000, though organizers anticipated about 50,000 for Sunday’s event. Amandla Stenber, 12, took the microphone to recall learning about the civil rights movement in school, naming four girls killed in a 1963 church bombing in Birmingham, Ala. “As Dr. King said at their funeral, ‘They didn’t live long lives, but they lived meaningful lives,’” Amandla said. “I plan to live a meaningful life, too.” BRET T ZONGKER (AP)
FWo_d] Jh_Xkj[ President Obama on Sunday saluted Martin Luther King Jr. as a man who “stirred our conscience” and made the Union “more perfect,” rejoicing in the dedication of a monument memorializing the slain civil rights leader’s life and work. “I know we will overcome,” Obama proclaimed at the granite monument on the National Mall. “I know this,” he said, “because of the man towering over us.” Obama and his wife, Michelle, and Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, joined a host of civil rights figures for the dedication. The president credits King with paving his way to the White House. (AP)

Through a quarter of the season, the Redskins maintained good health at all their key positions, and Mike Shanahan’s players had managed to keep their errors to a minimum — both factors in their early success and first-place standing in the NFC East. On Sunday while looking to protect their divisional lead against the visiting Philadelphia Eagles, all that good fortune came to an end in a 20-13 defeat before a crowd of 80,447 at FedEx Field. The Redskins suffered three first-half injuries on offense — likely losing starting guard Kory Lichtensteiger for the season with torn ligaments in his knee, tight end Chris Cooley to a fractured index finger in his left hand that will require surgery and tackle Trent Williams to a sprained ankle — then saw quarterback Rex Grossman throw four interceptions before he was benched. John Beck took over but couldn’t lead Washington on a comeback bid, and Washington — whose defense held in the second half after giving up 20 first-half points — dropped to 3-2 on the season. The Eagles, who had lost fourstraight games entering Sunday, won their second-straight game at FedEx Field, and may have saved their season. No team in NFL his-
Eagles tight end Brent Celek makes a difficult catch after tipping the ball to himself during Philly’s 20-13 win over the Redskins.
H[fehj 9WhZ BEST CALL: In the fourth quarter
from the 1, the Redskins ran a slowdeveloping yet effective run fake that led to a 31-yard pass play. WORST CALL: Down two TDs in the fourth quarter, Shanahan tried for a 50-yard field goal attempt on 4th and 17. They ended up drawing a penalty and were forced to punt. BEST ADJUSTMENT: After Rex Grossman threw four interceptions, Shanahan made the switch to John Beck. He ended up scoring their only touchdown of the day.

One Philadelphia drive in the second quarter told Sunday’s story best. Running back LeSean McCoy lost the ball at the end of a run on the first play but was ruled down. Two plays later, Brent Celek made an incredible 21-yard reception, tipping the ball with two hands, then reaching back to tip it with his right hand before catching it while falling on his back and getting hit by two defenders. Four plays later, Michael Vick had a pass tipped high into the air inside Washington’s 10, but it floated to one of his teammates instead of a defender. (AP)
tory has ever overcome a 1-5 start to win their division. Philadelphia has won 10 of 12 at Washington, although this wasn’t as lopsided as last year’s 59-28 laugher. In his worst game as a Redskin, Grossman — who was intercepted by Kurt Coleman three times — went 9 for 22 for 143 yards, 45 yards coming on a flea flicker to Jabar Gaffney in what is the longest Redskins completion this season.Beck, meanwhile, completed eight of 15 passes for 117 yards. In addition to their budding quarterback conf lict, the Redskins must address their losses on the offensive line. When Lichtensteiger went down, starting center Will Montgomery slid over to guard, and Erik Cook — the 2010 seventh-round pick, who spent the bulk of his rookie season on the practice squad — took over at center. Washington doesn’t have another guard or center on the roster. (THE WASHINGTON POST/AP)

Sometimes, scary things come in small packages. A mosquito sentenced George Washington to a lifelong battle with malaria. Rock y Mountain locusts, in a swarm the size of California, devastated the American West in the late 1800s. Author A my Stewar t chronicles 100 such crimes against humanity in “Wicked Bugs” ($19, Algonquin).* If you’re brave enough to read it, the book will give you a new perspective on the creepy crawlies t hat out number us 200 million-to-1.
every one of us, and most of that 200 million probably is ants. Given the fact that they run little armies, we would not want them to wage a military campaign against us.
After reading Amy Stewart’s “Wicked Bugs,” you may look at your ant farm differently.
How can we become less afraid of insects?
By becoming better informed. Somebody who runs away from any spider they see is simply not educated. A kitten can hurt you more than most spiders can. A kitten can break your skin. Most spiders simply can’t, and even if they could, they certainly don’t want to.
Which story most freaked you out?
Christopher Columbus and his crew, on voyages to the Caribbean, encountered these terrible sand fleas called chigoe fleas. They burrow under your toenails and lay eggs. Members of Columbus’ crew actually cut their toes off to get rid of these fleas. I was always searching for stories about famous people. Marquis de Sade is in there — there’s sort of a kinky bug story involving him. Please share.

It’s about the Spanish fly, which was believed to be an aphrodisiac — and it’s not. It severely irritates the urinary tract, so men would experience erections as a result of having ingested [powdered] Spanish fly. Marquis de Sade, thinking that the Spanish fly had what I guess we could describe as Viagralike powers, slipped it onto some

Unfortunately, even bars and liquor stores that normally stock Southern Tier’s Pumking (such as Church Key and Ace Beverage) are sold out. To find it, you’ll have to go to Bier Baron (1523 22nd St. NW), which is hoarding its kegs of the stuff for a pumpkin beer tasting on Oct. 27 at 7:30 p.m. Go to Bierbarondc.com for $25 tickets, or pay $30 at the door.

’Tis the season for pumpkin beer, and, accordingly, pumpkin beer research. This reporter bravely ventured into a seasonal ale smackdown to bring you tales of the various pumpkin beers available across the city. The losers: Woodchuck Pumpkin Cider ($6.50 at RFD, 810 7th St. NW) tastes like a pumpkin Jolly Rancher fell into your cider. It was so saccharine that 8o <_edW it was difficult to finish. PkXb_d The Schlafly Pumpkin Ale ($7 at Church Key, 1337 14th St. NW) was inoffensive but too sweet and boring compared to other options. The runners-up: Great Pumpkin (Heavy Seas Brewing Co., $7.50 at Church Key) is very pumpkin-y but avoids the sweetness trap, with a strong hoppy flavor. Boxcar Pumpkin Porter (Starr Hill Brewing Co., $6.50 at RFD) is dark (not for a porter, but for a pumpkin beer) and keeps the autumnal flavor subtle but unmistakable. The King: The best of all the pumpkin ales I tasted is Southern Tier’s Pumking. This is a beer that even pumpkin naysayers can get behind — it’s pungent and spicy with a gorgeous, complex flavor.

Random Acts Of Satire David Sedaris doesn’t have a new book out, so we’re not sure why he’s on tour. The last time he did something newsworthy, he joked about Chinese food (in a July Guardian article) that some deemed insensitive. We can’t judge, because he used “phlegm” too many times for us to read it without gagging on our Chinese food. Nevertheless, Sedaris is stopping by Lisner to be his usual dry, funny self. Welcome Our Poet Overlord Some critics compare newly minted poet laureate Philip Levine to Walt Whitman, and while they both are known for their expansive cadence and eye for observing small details to tell big stories (and comparisons to Whitman are never BAD), Levine is a very different poet. Whitman was concerned with the range of American life, while Levine’s work is generally smaller and more plotdriven (a surprisingly rare thing in poetry). Little Things Bill Bryson has made a career out of explaining things we didn’t know we didn’t know — sometimes tackling big topics, as with the scientific explainer “A Short History of Nearly Everything,” and sometimes very small ones, as in his new book, “At Home,” which details the backstories of household components. Sixth and I Historic Synagogue, 600 I St. NW; 7 p.m., $12, $10 in advance, two free tickets when you buy the book; 202-364-1919, Politics-prose.com. (Gallery Place)

But today his music is no less rich or compelling than before, even delivered in the form of the spoken words he voices lyrically and from his heart. “What a blessing, what a blessing,” he marvels in his distinctive sandy whisper, summing up his life in a recent interview. Belafonte may be best remembered as the voice behind “DayO (Banana Boat Song),’’ but the actor and singer was a remarkable artist, humanitarian and civil rights advocate.
