‘After-hours’ director will deal with noise complaints and rats THE DISTRICT Applications from people vying to become D.C.’s first-ever nightlife director have been pouring into Mayor Muriel Bowser’s office from across the country and around the world. Just weeks into the search, the mayor’s office said it has received more applications for this job than any other cabinet position.

The new director of D.C.’s inaugural Office of Nightlife and Culture will be in charge of “the after-hours economy” and all that goes along with it — noise complaints, crime, street cleanup, traffic congestion and, of course, rats.

“This job, man. People are excited about it. Around the country, across the oceans,” said Lindsey Parker, Bowser’s deputy chief of staff. “We’ve received a very diverse group of résumés.”

The concept of having an afterdark government official is not

a new one. Other cities — New York, London, Orlando, even smaller ones like Iowa City — have created such positions.

They vary in title (night mayor, night czar, night manager) and responsibilities.

In the District, it will be a full-time job — with odd hours.

“There’s not going to be a normal schedule,” Parker said. “I’m sure this person will have a lot of meetings between 12 p.m. and 5 p.m., but you’ll also have residents who want to meet up and show you the rat issue they’re seeing in the alley nearby at 9 or 10 p.m.”

All establishments that are open between 5 p.m. and 2 a.m., including bars, restaurants, theaters, clubs, art spaces and more, will be considered part of the D.C. director’s purview.

The appointee will be expected to work with other organizations to address the types of problems that tend to arise after dark.

The number of restaurants and bars in the District has ballooned from 1,729 in 2006 to nearly 2,300, according to 2016 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Over the past 10 years, the number of drinking establishments in the District has grown by 50 percent, Parker added.

Bars and restaurants made about $3.8 billion in revenue in 2017, and employ about 9 percent of Washington’s workers. Over the next decade, that number is projected to grow by 6 percent, according to the National Restaurant Association.

D.C. officials declined to say whether they were seeking a bureaucrat or a barkeeper to run the office. D.C. Councilman Brandon Todd, Ward 4, said the ideal candidate would likely have a mix of experience in the public and private sectors.

On Thursday, Bowser signed a bill to officially create the Office of Nightlife and Culture. Now, the bill heads to Congress for a 30-day review. The job — which comes with an annual salary of $97,434 to $118,000 — will be filled as soon as possible. Just don’t call the person the “night mayor.”

Early voting way up in Virginia VIRGINIA The number of voters in Virginia who have cast early ballots ahead of the November election is dramatically up compared with last year, suggesting an electorate that is energized around several hotly contested races for Congress that are spread across the state.

Virginia allows voters to cast “absentee” ballots in person if they have a valid excuse for not being able to vote on Election Day. Nearly 78,000 people have completed ballots since absentee voting began Sept. 15 — more than double the number who voted early by this point last year, according to an analysis of voting data by the nonprofit Virginia Public Access Project.

That number is still shy of the 123,221 absentee ballots cast during the 2014 midterm elections, state data shows.

But with less than three weeks before the Nov. 6 election, local election officials say this year’s absentee totals are on pace to eclipse 2014 and may even approach the turnout for the presidential election of 2016, when a near-record 496,452 Virginians cast early ballots.

“It’s actually quite shocking,” said Richard Keech, deputy director of the elections office in Loudoun County.

“Turnout is going to be up everywhere where there is a competitive race going on,” Kidd said, predicting that Democratic enthusiasm will continue in Virginia. “What we don’t know is how big that wave is going to be.”

In Fairfax on Thursday, a steady trickle of voters walked into the county government center to cast their ballots.

Dems: Trump acted to stop FBI HQ move Lawmakers: President’s involvement is brazen conflict of interest THE DISTRICT Administration emails show that President Trump intervened personally to keep FBI headquarters in downtown Washington rather than relocate it to the suburbs as had long been planned, congressional Democrats said Thursday.

The letter from Democratic lawmakers on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform says Trump’s direct involvement presents a brazen conflict of interest. Trump owns a downtown hotel across the street from FBI headquarters that could face competition if the FBI’s current location is opened to private redevelopment, which could include another hotel. Before running for office, Trump expressed interest in redeveloping the property himself.

Thursday’s letter cites correspondence from a senior official at the General Services Administration, which manages real estate for the federal government, outlining a January 2018 Oval Office meeting and describing the headquarters decision as “what POTUS directed everyone to do.”

Another email describes steps that will be “necessary to deliver the project the president wants on the timetable he wants it done.”

The GSA responded in a written statement, saying that “suggestions that those emails indicate presidential involvement in the location decision are inaccurate.”

GSA and the FBI, the leadership team at the FBI made the decision to keep its headquarters at the current Pennsylvania Avenue location,” GSA said.

The Democrats’ letter follows up on an inspector general’s report earlier this year that disclosed Trump was participating in meetings in which the FBI headquarters project was discussed.

Given Trump’s financial conflict of interest with his hotel, and his ongoing feud with the FBI, Connolly said Trump’s involvement in the decision is all the more suspicious.

“This is an issue we will continue to pursue in the next Congress,” Connolly said.

METROBUS That day in August, Geneva Walker recalls, was “as hot as Hades.” And as a Metro bus that she wasn’t allowed to board drove away, leaving her standing on a Georgetown street with her 3-month-old son, Liam, she felt her eyes fill with tears.

Moments earlier she’d been excited. For a new mother who often feels alone, it was a rare day when she was going out to lunch with a friend — an adult.

But Liam screams in cars. “It’s a high-pitched scream accompanied sometimes with vomiting,” said Walker, 40.

“When it’s someone else’s baby, it’s just annoying,” she said. “But I’ve found there’s a direct correlation, when it’s my baby, between the crying and my blood pressure.”

So taking a Lyft wasn’t an option, and neither, as it would turn out, was a Metro bus.

For now, Metro allows strollers on buses, but they must be folded while on board.

Liam, though, can’t sit up yet, so he lies in a bassinet stroller — “which is like a long bed that doesn’t collapse, and sits in a stroller frame, and doesn’t fold,” Walker said.

So when the 38B bus came, the driver wouldn’t let them on, leaving them to bake on the street.

Metro could someday join the D.C. Circulator and transit agencies in some other cities that allow open strollers on buses.

As recently as last December, Metro said in response to a petition drive to allow open strollers that it was not considering a change. The agency told Fox 5 that unfolded strollers would “block the aisle, posing a safety/ tripping hazard and delaying

the boarding/alighting process.”

But in an email this week, Metro spokesman Ron Holzer confirmed “internally, there has been some preliminary discussion around whether it may be possible to relax this policy in the future due to recent improvements in bus design.”

Also driving a possible change is Metro’s attempt to reverse a 20 percent drop in bus and train ridership. An internal Metro report in May laying out options for increasing ridership said allowing strollers, as Chicago, Boston, San Francisco and Houston have done, would be “customer-friendly” and would cost the agency nothing.

And it would encourage families to ride more.

The Metro watchdog @MetroReasons also noted on Twitter that the agency in September asked customers in an online survey how they’d feel about allowing the strollers.

To be sure, some riders will balk at the idea of letting open strollers on buses, especially when riders on crowded rushhour buses are already crammed

Walker said she gets that. She wasn’t always a mom. But, she said, transit agencies have rightly decided to make room for wheelchairs. And she thinks it’s about time Metro did more to help families too.

Since that August day, Walker has learned that she can take the Circulator some places, but not nearly as many as she could go on Metro buses, nor quickly enough to fit her baby’s nap schedule.

For her, the issue isn’t about

ridership numbers, but about making it easier for new moms to get around to not feel as isolated.

She laughs now, a little embarrassed at having stood on a corner fighting back tears.

When she was 17, Walker traveled alone around India. She doesn’t cry easily at having to figure out how to get around.

But she’s from Colorado, and her husband is from Mexico, so they have no family around to help. On the weekdays, when her husband is at work, her friends are also at work.

She hadn’t realized before becoming a mother all that’s involved in going out to lunch with a newborn. Planning to go to a restaurant means not only figuring out how to get there, but timing it just so, “so that you don’t arrive when the babies need to nap,” she said. “Otherwise they will scream and make everyone sad.”

On that day she’d planned all this out. But the bus came, and it drove away. She looked at Liam and told him, “That driver wasn’t nice.” And then she took some deep breaths. KERY MURAKAMI (EXPRESS)

Q. Metro announced last week that it has gotten rid of all of its old 5000-series trains.

So why are some riders, like @TM15284349, reporting on Twitter that they’re still seeing the old cars?

A. “Dunno,” Metro spokesman Dan Stessel said via email.

“Perhaps one of our 8 rail yards let a 5K out for service; however, they are not programmed or needed for regular service and I can tell you that there is not a single one on the railroad at this moment.”

Meanwhile, with the 17-yearold 5000-series cars gone (or at least mostly so?), Metro’s fleet consists of refurbished 2000-series and 3000-series cars and 564 newer 7000-series cars. The 7000-series cars already make up a majority of Metro’s fleet, but another 183 will be added by the end of next year.

The 2000- and 3000-series cars, put into service in the mid’80s, will begin reaching the end of their 40-year lifespan in 2023, Stessel said. In September, Metro began the process of replacing them by releasing a request for proposals to design and build at least 256 8000-series trains to replace the 2000- and 3000-series cars in 2024.

ELECTIONS In an otherwise innocuous part of Facebook’s expansive Silicon Valley campus, a locked door bears a taped-on sign that reads “War Room.” Behind the door lies a nerve center the social network has set up to combat fake accounts and bogus news stories ahead of upcoming elections.

Inside the room are dozens of employees staring intently at their monitors while data streams across giant dashboards. The war room was created to counter threats that almost no one at the company, least of all CEO Mark Zuckerberg, took seriously just two years ago — and which the company’s critics now believe pose a threat to democracy.

Days after President Trump’s victory, Zuckerberg brushed off assertions that the outcome had been influenced by fictional news stories on Facebook, calling the idea “pretty crazy.”

But Facebook’s blase attitude shifted as criticism mounted.

Later that year, it acknowledged having run thousands of ads promoting false information placed

by Russian agents. Zuckerberg eventually made fixing Facebook his personal challenge for 2018.

The war room is a major part of Facebook’s ongoing repairs.

But it remains unclear whether Facebook is doing enough, said Angelo Carusone, president of Media Matters for America, a liberal group that monitors misinformation. He noted that the sensational themes distributed in fictional news stories can be highly effective at keeping people “engaged” on Facebook — which in turn makes it possible to

sell more of the ads that generate most of Facebook’s revenue.

“What they are doing so far seems to be more about trying to prevent another public relations disaster and less so about putting in meaningful solutions to the problem,” Carusone said.

“On balance, I would say they that are still way off.”

Facebook defends its war room as an effective weapon against misinformation, although its efforts are still a work in progress.

WASHINGTON President Trump said Thursday it “certainly looks” as though Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi is dead, and he threatened “very severe” consequences if the Saudis are found to have murdered him.

As the U.S. toughened its response to Khashoggi’s disappearance, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Thursday pulled out of a major Saudi investment conference amid global pressure. However, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also said the kingdom should be given more time to investigate before the U.S. lays any blame or considers action.

Trump, who has insisted that more facts must be known before making assumptions about Khashoggi, did not say on what he based his statement on the writer’s demise two weeks ago. He commented as he left Joint Base Andrews for a trip to Montana.

Asked if Khashoggi was dead, he said, “It certainly looks that way. ... Very sad.”

While Turkish officials have accused Saudi Arabia of the murder in Istanbul of Khashoggi, a U.S.-based writer who has been critical of Saudi leaders, Trump has cautioned against a rush to judgment against an important Mideast ally. And Pompeo, just back from talks with Saudi and Turkish leaders, said earlier Thursday that the U.S. needed more facts before deciding “how, or if” to respond.

by Catholic clergy in the state of Pennsylvania, according to people familiar with the matter.

The move by the agency to launch such a probe, even one limited to a single state, marks a major escalation in the federal government’s response to allegations that the church spent decades hiding the extent of the sexual abuse problem among its priests, and allowing pedophiles to continue to work and live undetected in communities.

“This is just a breathtaking, stunning and very welcome development,” said Michael Dolce, a lawyer who represents victims of sexual abuse.

The federal investigation was first reported by The Associated Press. The U.S. attorney’s office in Philadelphia began issuing subpoenas recently, according to one person familiar with the matter. A spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney, William McSwain, declined to comment, though church officials around the state confirmed having received subpoenas.

The question for Manny Machado this October is simple: Why? Why not run hard on a grounder in a tie game during an NLCS that your Dodgers trailed one game to none? Why, then, slide questionably into second base, making fans and opponents wonder about your intent?

And more than all that: Why in the world kick Milwaukee first baseman Jesus Aguilar as you crossed the bag in the 10th inning of Tuesday night’s Game 4, which eventually ended in a Dodgers victory?

“I was trying to get over him and hit his foot,” Machado told reporters afterward. “If that’s dirty, that’s dirty.”

Machado did not “try” to lift his left foot over Aguilar’s foot. Rather, he looked down, and dragged his foot through Aguilar’s leg. Hard.

MLB didn’t buy his excuse, fining him an undisclosed amount before Game 5, which Los Angeles won Wednesday to take a 3-2 lead in the series.

Machado’s behavior will be a storyline again Friday when the series resumes at 8:39 p.m.

His behavior is so puzzling because he has so much at stake. Machado joins Bryce Harper as the preeminent free agents of this offseason, and either or both could break the record for largest total value of a baseball contract (Giancarlo Stanton’s $325 million).

Machado is just 26 — the age Harper turned Tuesday — and has the bulk of what could be a Hall of Fame career ahead.

Kicking Aguilar in the fourth game of the NLCS is not going to determine whether Machado gets $300 million.

Neither is throwing his spikes up at second base.

But these pinpricks add up to something. Consider the market for Machado and Harper, who are intertwined in free agency because they likely will share some suitors.

MARYLAND When he got the job as Maryland’s interim football coach, Matt Canada decided it would be best to handle the uncertainty of the position one day at a time.

The days turned into months.

Now, with the Terrapins halfway through their schedule, Canada’s status — and approach — remains unchanged.

“Right now, as a football program we’re working as hard as we can to do the best job we can today,” he said this week. “Tomorrow, we’ll see what tomorrow is.”

Working together under uniquely trying circumstances, Canada and the Terrapins have put together a season that is far better than anyone could have reasonably expected.

Heading into Saturday’s game at No. 19 Iowa, Maryland (4-2, 2-1 Big Ten) has already matched last year’s win total and is just two victories away from becoming bowl eligible.

No. 19 Iowa — 5-1 overall, 2-1 in conference and playing at home in Iowa City — obviously presents a big test.

But for Maryland to be a legitimate challenger at this point is quite an accomplishment for a program that became unhinged in June, when offensive lineman Jordan McNair died of heatstroke two weeks after collapsing during a preseason workout.

Interim coach Matt Canada has led the Terps after a player’s death and bullying accusations against the coaches.

School President Wallace Loh acknowledged mistakes were made in McNair’s treatment on the practice field, and an investigation confirmed that assertion.

The program was also rocked by charges that the coaching staff bullied the players. The strength and conditioning coach resigned, and head coach DJ Durkin was placed on administrative leave in August while the program is investigated.

Canada, in his first year as Maryland’s offensive coordinator, was thrust into the role of interim coach —his first college head coaching job.

You really only need a few things to open a restaurant. A good-sized kitchen? Nope. A stove? Nope. An oven? Nope.

When Scott Herbst, owner and operator of Sailor Oyster Bar, walked into the building for the first time in 2016, he realized he couldn’t have it all. “I knew that it wasn’t going to have the traditional kitchen, just because of the layout of the building,” which was constructed in 1910, Herbst says. “I sat down with my chef at the time and we started brainstorming about what we could do if we were on a boat. After an hour, we had this outline of a menu and we were like, ‘We can do this.’ ” The menu they arrived at includes oysters on the half shell, crudo, charcuterie, toasts and preserved seafood like sardines from Portugal and mussels from Spain — and it’s all done with nothing but a toaster oven, one induction burner, a sous vide machine and a kitchen blowtorch. Diners — who should be prepared to share dishes and eat too much — will walk away from the table knowing that the chefs of Sailor Oyster Bar have kept their cool in the kitchen all night long. The D.C. commute is a hellish landscape with no escape. Take your car and you’re surrounded by drivers who deserve death for blocking the box. Take Metro and you’re … on the Metro.

Those of us who live in many Maryland suburbs or exurbs, though, are lucky. The Maryland Transit Administration’s commuter buses are pure luxury compared to literally any other option. They have comfy seats. They have Wi-Fi. MTA has two dozen or so routes into D.C., and they start running early and stop running late. They’re also cheaper than Metro or driving: For me, getting from home to work and back on Metro costs over $12 and involves a 30-minute drive to the station. Driving the whole way takes an hour, with $15 parking. The bus? Eight bucks and a 10-minute drive. Plus, you get to make friends whose real names you never know, like my buddies Catholic Missal Guy, Snore McSnoreson and Curly Bangs. So sit back, relax and let the driver take on all the idiots who don’t know what a turn signal is. K.P.K.

A 7-acre mass in the Anacostia River, Heritage Island is an unintentional monument to the patient persistence of nature.

Created in wetlands ruined by the Army Corps of Engineers in the early 1900s, Heritage Island and Kingman Island — its larger, drier neighbor — have been thwarting developers’ dreams ever since. Over the years, plans to use the islands as landfills, parking lots and a children’s theme park have fallen through, and a little forest has sprung up instead. These days, Heritage Island gets precious few visitors — just a handful of hikers who don’t mind the vine-choked trails and mosquitoinfested puddles. I go to watch great egrets fish in the marshes and to listen to catbirds squawk in the brush. Plans are still afoot to build outdoor classrooms, a floating lab and more, and I worry these developments could displace the very nature they’re intended to showcase. But I may not need to worry too much — a boardwalk built on Heritage Island just last spring is already being drowned by the river. S.D.

Actually five interconnected Dupont Circle rowhomes, The Mansion on O Street is a private club, bed-and-breakfast, museum, concert venue and flea market, and it also hosts a popular weekly brunch. But my favorite way to explore the oddball space is by going on one of its treasure hunts ($30$45 per person). Choose from several rotating themes — my favorite is the Rock & Roll Hunt — and then poke your way around the home’s 100-plus themed rooms. Three that are easy to find are the two-story log cabin room, an animal-print-intensive safari room and a guest room where Rosa Parks used to stay (she was friends with the mansion’s reclusive owner, H.H. Leonards). As you wander around, gently push suspicious-looking bookshelves, mirrors and oversized paintings — some of them will swing open to reveal hidden rooms. That’s your ticket to finding treasures like Prince’s jacket from “Purple Rain,” a chair shaped like a giant stiletto heel, and several musical toilets. S.D.

We live in stressful times, so it’s only natural to want to punch things, right? When I do, I head to Nuboxx, a boutique boxing gym in NoMa. The space has the luxe perks of a SoulCycle — towel service, showers, merch, keyless lockers and all-natural toiletries — and the classes have the feel of an old-school boxing gym with blaring hip-hop music. Nuboxx offers four types of 60-minute classes ($35 drop-in) that host up to 12 people. Off-peak classes ($20 drop-in) tend to have no more than six, which means more one-onone time with the instructor. Technical Boxing, my go-to class, uses timed rounds to focus on footwork, shadow boxing, speed rope and, of course, hitting the heavy bag and the trainer’s target mitts. Boxing Conditioning takes it up a notch, with shorter rest periods. Strength and Conditioning doesn’t involve boxing — it uses intervals and circuits to improve strength and speed — and 30/30 is a mix of boxing and strength and conditioning. Whatever the class, the trainers are sticklers for technique, so you’ll be looking like a pro in no time. I’ve always left the studio on an endorphin high, drenched in sweat and feeling as badass as Michael B. Jordan’s character in “Creed.” Except my gym is less grimy. Z.M.

When Rachel Coonce and Courtney Sexton convened the first meeting of The Inner Loop in 2014, more than 75 people showed up — way more than they were expecting.

“We were pretty shocked,” Coonce says. Apparently, the D.C. area was thirsty for what The Inner Loop offers: a monthly public reading featuring a mix of local authors, from the famous to the up-and-coming. “I really wanted to create this community, because writing is often a very solitary endeavor, and writers need to be able to get outside of their own heads,” Sexton says. The free meetings rotate through different spots in the city and encourage writers to get chatty with one another. “We try to keep it fun and informal; there’s usually alcohol available,” Sexton says.

The project has grown over the years to include a writer’s residency and a podcast, but the monthly readings are the group’s beating heart, the founders say. “They aren’t just for writers,” Coonce adds. “They are for readers, too.” S.D.

Sometime into your second beer at Murphy’s, you may catch yourself shouting “MacIntyre!” along with the crowd during a rendition of “Old Dun Cow,” or clapping during the pauses of “The Wild Rover.” This might even happen on your first visit, because it’s that easy to fall in love with this cozy, friendly bar in Old Town. Murphy’s celebrated its 40th anniversary this year, so it’s safe to say many first-time visitors turn into regulars. The food is good and the Guinness is poured properly, but the real draw is the live Irish music.

According to general manager Kenny Mitchell, there hasn’t been a single night in all 40 years of operation without live music. And you can still catch Pat Garvey, who played on Murphy’s opening night in 1978, singing “Finnegan’s Wake” and the like a few times each month. But try not to get carried away, or you might end up onstage with him like I did, miming green alligators and long-necked geese, helping the crowd learn the hand motions to “The Unicorn.” R.P.

D.C.’s hippest hotel isn’t just for hipsters. Sure, you’ll see 20-somethings in high-waisted jeans sipping Todd Thrasher-designed cocktails at Brothers and Sisters, one of the hotel’s in-house restaurants, but they will be sharing the stainless steel bar with scruffy activists and polished international travelers. This isn’t an accident — the huge, open lobby of The Line encourages mingling by refusing to bow to stodgy ideas like demarcated spaces. As you explore the airy atrium (which was reclaimed from a 112-yearold church), you’ll find restaurants overlooking or nested inside other restaurants, and a coffee bar overlooking a fishbowl-like recording studio — the headquarters of Full Service Radio, a local podcasting network. That means if you hang out long enough with your latte at The Cup We All Race 4, you’re likely to see all sorts of DMV musicians, DJs and tastemakers. The daily culture clash that happens at The Line’s lobby can keep a dedicated people-watcher occupied for hours on end. S.D.

Comedy thrives in dark, dank spaces. Expose it to fresh air or daylight and it withers and dies. Don’t believe me? Check out all the great comedy happening at Bier Baron’s DC Comedy Loft, a duplex that includes a large upstairs stage and a small subterranean showroom. The cellar is my favorite, though finding it isn’t easy — you have to walk through the downstairs bar, down a hallway and past a kitchen. Since opening in July, the space has becoming fertile ground for all kinds of interesting experiments. Every Monday night, for instance, there’s the Comedy Shuffle, an open mic where local comedians try out new material and get eviscerated (or, to put it nicely, workshopped) in real time by their peers.

The brainchild of Bier Baron general manager James Gaghan, the two spaces give the bar the flexibility to book big-name comics as well as shows tailored to more niche audiences. I’m particularly looking forward to seeing “Chelsea Lately” writer Chris Franjola, who will swing by Saturday and Sunday. S.D.

Best place to catch a Broadway show not on Broadway

There’s an intimacy to Arena Stage productions that proves surprising. The facility’s sprawling glass exterior looms over Sixth Street, but the Kreeger Theater — the most traditional of the three spaces within Arena — is a cozy, 514-seat room.

While “there’s not a bad seat in the house” can be a tiresome cliche, in this case it’s applicable. The productions, however, can be larger-than-life. It was at the Kreeger Theater that Tony-hoarding musical “Dear Evan Hansen” got its start three years ago. That show remains one of the hottest tickets on Broadway, nearly two years into its run. This past summer, audiences were treated to the world premiere of the breezy movie-turned-musical “Dave,” featuring a creative team packed with Broadway staples. The next time a show comes through Arena for an out-of-town tryout, do yourself a favor and snag a ticket. Then, make sure to brag to your friends about seeing that Broadway hit up close and personal before the show even made it to the Big Apple. T.F.

Reading is all about imagination, and Solid State Books provides a space that inspires young minds to soar. A plush forest with hand-sewn leaves suspended above, the children’s section rewards the usually banal activity of browsing by hiding reading nooks and crawl spaces in what appear, at first, to be ordinary shelves. You’ll also find all the latest titles for woke kids, including “Julian Is a Mermaid,” a lavishly illustrated story that gives children (ages 4-6) permission to follow their dreams, even when they run counter to gender norms. For older readers (14 and up), check out “The Hate U Give,” the story of a black student grappling with identity issues at a mostly white prep school. All the classics are in stock too, so if you want to run with the space’s woodland theme, pick up a copy of “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” and read it to your little ones under the tree. This year’s edition of D.C.’s Funk Parade got off to a rocky start when organizers announced in March that the free daylong festival was on the brink of cancellation due to a lack of funds. But supporters swiftly came to the rescue and donated enough money to keep the funk going in May. This is just one example of how the annual festival, which began in 2014, has brought the community closer together and created a high-profile platform for funk and world music in D.C. The brush with death made this year’s parade feel even more community-bonding than usual, as if the crowd had a heightened appreciation. It was also a larger celebration of D.C.’s music scene, with the night portion of the festival stretching into venues all across the city, not just along the U Street Corridor as in years past. For me, the best part is getting to see local acts like free jazz ensemble Nag Champa and R&B group Dior Ashley Brown & The dAb Band reach a new (and much wider) audience. The Funk Parade’s big return felt like a win not just for the festival, but for D.C. music as a whole. S.W.

Feeling stressed? Of course you are.

The news in this very paper probably raises your blood pressure daily. Wait, don’t stop reading. There’s another solution: forest bathing. This trendy new way to chill comes from Japan, where it’s known as “shinrin-yoku” and has long been prescribed for a variety of ills — and for good reason.

Studies suggest forest bathing might lower the risk for Type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease. Best of all, it’s easy to do. Just find some woodsy area and take a walk — but not a fast walk. Stop and sit at the foot of a tree, or lie down in a pile of newly fallen leaves. Sniff the soil, listen to the cicadas, wave goodbye to the last butterflies of fall. You’re going to look like a crazy person, so if you’re not comfortable communing with nature on your own, consider going on a guided walk. My favorite local naturalist, Melanie Choukas-Bradley, leads regular forest bathing walks, including a daytime tour on Oct. 31 at the Enid A. Haupt Garden behind the Smithsonian Castle (for details, go to smithsonianassociates.org). The Renwick’s current Burning Man exhibit is a good way to see some of the festival’s large-scale art, but what it’s missing are the parties — the bacchanals of radical selfexpression. For a more authentic Burning Man experience in D.C., check out Sunset & Chill, an every-other-Saturday-evening outdoor get-together with live DJs, light installations and fire-dancing (tickets are $10). The organizers — Ethan Sapperstein, Sam Stevens and Wade Hammes — aim to create a collaborative environment where people can express themselves through dancing, contact juggling, acro-yoga and other so-called “flow arts.” “It’s about people from different walks of life coming together and creating something new and different for a few hours,” Sapperstein says. Will the party keep going even when the weather gets cold? “We intend to keep hosting … as long as people keep showing up,” he says. Now that’s the playa spirit! S.D.

Anyone who’s been to Disney World or Universal Studios knows about the “4D” experience — when a 3D movie is supplemented by mobile seats and practical effects. Since January, the Regal Gallery Place Stadium 14’s 4DX theater has brought amusement park thrills to downtown D.C. The ticket comes with a hefty price tag ($23-$26), but a moviegoer willing to splurge can now watch the latest 3D blockbusters complete with dynamic seats, gusts of wind, splashes of rain and more. My recent screening of “Venom” proved an apt showcase, particularly when Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock buzzed through the streets of San Francisco on a motorcycle while my seat shifted, slid and rumbled with every turn. Or when, as Venom eerily licked a victim across the face, I felt drops of water hit my cheek. The 4DX experience kind of made this campy mess of a movie fun — is there a better endorsement than that? From a practical standpoint, the label on your beer can doesn’t matter — it’s what’s inside that counts.

That hasn’t stopped craft breweries from turning nowubiquitous cans into works of art. In D.C., no one is doing cans more distinctively than Navy Yard’s Bluejacket, which started its brewery-only weekly can releases in March. While many brewers take either a brash or uniform branding approach that might make all their cans blend together, Bluejacket puts the art first, with most of each can’s label dedicated to a stylized, unique image (with typography that is simple, clean and to the point). When Bluejacket released an IPA called Turnstiles, for example, Kris Mullins, who designs the cans as Neighborhood Restaurant Group’s creative director, used an image of a Metro station ceiling. The label for Open Window shows a squinting dog with its head poking out a car window. Freak Scene features a bold, retro drawing of a suited-up man with four eyes. “Every one of the beers has a backstory, and with the images — metaphorically or otherwise — we’re trying to telegraph something about the feeling we get from the beer itself,” Mullins says. “It’s an expression of what’s in the can.” R.G.

Sitting on a quiet and unassuming residential street in Takoma is a house where artists of all disciplines unleash their weirdest, most off-the-wall projects. Did you know that you can turn a giant inflatable dinosaur into a musical instrument? I didn’t either, until I went to Rhizome DC last year and saw the guy behind Sgt. Pepper’s Plastic Inevitable Pet Sounds making piercing ambient drone music by rubbing up against a balloon animal. Most bookers would scoff at the idea of having an act like that play in their space, but that’s all a part of Rhizome’s charm. The venue is not only a space to hear obscure bands, but a place to learn and experiment: The robust schedule offers a wide selection of workshops, lectures and exhibitions, such as a six-week meditation series focused on experimental music and a journaling workshop where participants learn to capture memories from their dreams. As one of the few DIY arts spaces left in the area, Rhizome is a crucial venue for local creatives to freely express themselves in a safe and nonjudgmental space. S.W.

Just a year old, The Wharf has already transformed the city’s music scene.

I’ve caught several concerts at each of the development’s three new venues, but I keep coming back to The Anthem because there’s nothing quite like it. The place looks huge (and it is, with a capacity of 6,000), but it can still feel weirdly intimate. If you’re on the general-admission floor, it’s like you’re at a giant version of the venue’s older sibling, the 9:30 Club. If you sit in one of the so-called Super Excellent Seats that line the balconies, you feel like you’re at a theater. Head up to the bleachers on the third floor and it will remind you of an arena (albeit one with superior sightlines and sound that’s dynamic even from the way back). The venue officially opened with a Foo Fighters show and has since drawn arena-size names (Lorde, The Killers, Jack White), living legends (Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson) and everything in between over nearly 150 performances. The 9:30 Club has always felt like home to me, but if The Anthem keeps this pace up, I might need to submit a change of address. R.G.

I’m allergic to dairy, so whenever I look at a restaurant menu, I have to play a guessing game as to what I can eat — or overwhelm a server with tons of questions. So I tend to eat vegan often out of convenience. There’s no better feeling than walking into a place and knowing I can eat everything on the menu. And at Equinox’s Sunday brunch, I literally have. For 3½ hours every week, the fine dining establishment gets casual, ditching the china and fancy tasting menus for a $35 buffet-style all-you-can eat smorgasbord of some of the city’s best plant-based cooking.

The brainchild of co-owner Ellen Kassoff Gray, as executed by her husband, chef Todd Gray, this vegan brunch isn’t trying to replicate meat dishes. Ironically, “I call this sort of a carnivore’s approach to plant-based cooking,” Todd says. “I don’t try to do things that are trying to be things they aren’t.” The menu rotates monthly, but you’ll almost always find a healthy selection of vegan pancakes, breads and spreads, fondue and desserts. Todd recently started using JUST Egg — a mung bean-based substitute that’s closer to the real thing than a tofu scramble — in addictive, bite-size breakfast sandwiches. You’ll also often find the chef working the room and cheerfully passing out samples of one of his latest creations. R.G.

Fading son: In ‘Boy,’ the pain is all that’s certain “Beautiful Boy” has two defining characteristics: time travel and Timothée Chalamet.

Chalamet plays Nic Sheff, a young man with the potential to go far if it weren’t for a fondness for weed. And alcohol.

And heroin. And crystal meth.

He dabbles in LSD and pills, too. This makes it difficult for him to go to college, to pursue a career, and to not render his dad David (Steve Carell) terrified that Nic will die.

Director Felix van Groeningen’s screenplay (co-written with Luke Davies and based on the memoirs of the real-life Nic and David) hops back and forth in time. Our signposts are younger actors playing Nic at various points in his

life, Carell’s beard going more and less gray, and Chalamet’s remarkable performance. We can spot where Nic is in his addiction by how healthy or haggard Chalamet looks, down to the depths of his eyes. Nic is charismatic enough to be the kind of addict one loves but can never quite trust. The audience, just like David, wants to believe Nic when he says he’s been clean for five days or nine months, that he just needs a few hundred dollars for a bus ticket, that he absolutely did not take the $8 from his little brother’s piggy bank to buy drugs. It’s to van Groeningen’s credit that he neither proves nor disproves Nic’s words, which leaves viewers in the same ambiguous place as Nic’s family.

another way — we don’t know when the real story starts.

When it comes to addiction, it’s hard to tell where the nightmare began and when the dreamer will wake. Did Nic start using because his parents divorced? Did this whole thing begin because his dad once shared a joint with him? Was David too strict? Not strict enough?

The thing with life is you can’t tell where a story begins until you’re in the middle of it — and that’s at the earliest. That’s particularly true with parenting. I have three major fears about raising my son: first, that he will live an unhappy life and it will be my fault. Second, that he will hate me forever and it will be my fault. Three, that he will die and it will be my fault. While I can lower the chances of those

things happening (sorry, kid, I don’t care what the neighborhood kids are doing — you are wearing your bike helmet), I can’t actually prevent them.

But if they do come to pass, it would be easier for me to lay the responsibility at my feet instead of his. It defines his future primarily by my actions.

Van Groeningen hints at this by often shooting David and other members of Nic’s family in mirrors and other reflective surfaces — sometimes Nic is entirely out of frame and we see two images of a family member. While they are worried about Nic, they believe that Nic’s addiction is really about them, and rooted in something they did or didn’t do.

“Beautiful Boy” is built on unsteady ground, which is exactly where it should be, given the story. No one is sure of anything in the past, present or future. The film offers no answers when it comes to addiction. It’s not even really about Nic: It’s about David wondering what he did to make this happen, what he should do now and what will happen to his boy.

‘Halloween’ is stuck in the past Set 40 years after the events of John Carpenter’s 1978 slasher, the 11th title in the “Halloween” franchise finds Jamie Lee Curtis reprising her breakout role of Laurie Strode, who as a teenage babysitter survived deranged killer Michael Myers’ homicidal rampage.

Now, she’s a grizzled survivor eaten alive by paranoia. In a ludicrous plot point, authorities have decided to transport Myers to a new facility — on Oct. 31, of all days.
