‘It’s just like light on water’ National Cathedral hosts a contest where every entrant is ringer TAKING IT SLOW

KEITH LANE (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

THE DISTRICT High above Washington National Cathedral, in a brick-wall chamber reachable by a tiny elevator, a group of 10 men and women stood expressionless Saturday, each holding on to the end of a rope. In their minds, they began to count. “Look to,” Beth Sinclair, 55, said to the group, pulling down on the rope. “Treble’s going . . . she’s gone.” Thirty feet above, some of the heaviest bells in North America began to ring, sending a crescendo of notes across the nation’s capital, each ring separated by about a 25th of a second. Gathered in the tower were a group of musicians who are often heard but rarely seen. They are bell ringers, the humans behind the sounds associated with milestones of great joy or sorrow, with weddings and funerals and presidential inaugurations. But on Saturday, they gathered for something else entirely — the second annual Trinity Shield Striking Competition, a weekend of competition among some of

a puzzle. “When it’s really beautiful, it’s just like light on water,” she said. “It’s kind of transformative. We don’t hit that that often, but you are chasing it all the time.” After four hours of competition and the notes from the last bells had dissipated into the late afternoon air, Regan studied his notes and chose a winner: The Washington Ringing Society would claim the title, for the second year in a row.

On Saturday, the National Zoo celebrated International Sloth Day by inviting the public to hang out with its resident sloth Vlad, above. Started in 2010 by a wildlife conservation organization, the day is meant to increase awareness about sloths’ lives and locales. Sloth Day is celebrated Oct. 20, and this year, because it coincided with a Saturday, many in hectic Washington had a chance to slacken their pace, nap on the couch and commune, perhaps, with their inner sloths.

the country’s best bell ringers. Eight teams from across the country took turns performing the centuries-old tradition of change ringing, an art that requires a band of ringers to rhythmically control a set of tuned bells, playing patterns of notes called “methods.” Each team, consisting of either six or eight bell ringers, was judged by one of the most accomplished change ringers in the United Kingdom, Mark Regan. The competition was intended

to be held at New York’s Trinity Church Wall Street. But because that church is undergoing construction, the Washington Ringing Society offered to host the event in Washington National Cathedral, home to a set of 10 bells as wide as 55 inches and as heavy as 3,588 pounds. It’s also one of about 50 change ringing bell towers in North America. For Sinclair, like many of her fellow ringers, change ringing is a mental challenge, like solving

A self-driving rollout in D.C. TRANSPORTATION The black Ford Fusion hybrid with a tiara of laser sensors looped twice through a 4-mile stretch of a changing Washington, passing a trendy food hall and a sagging strip mall as it vacuumed up data to build a citywide network of self-driving cars. The map engineers inside last week were part of an advance team working with Ford, which is set to announce today that it plans to deploy a driverless fleet that will carry customers and make deliveries for businesses across all corners of the nation’s capital. Automakers and technology companies touting safety and economic benefits from autonomous vehicles are racing to improve their systems and carve out real estate across the country, putting stakes down in cities from San Francisco to Boston as public proving grounds for technologies that remain distrusted by many. Ford will begin testing selfdriving cars in the District early next year, and plans to launch commercially in Washington, Miami and other unnamed cities starting in 2021. That’s a longer timeline than some other firms and communities, a reality leaders from Ford and the District both described as beneficial. “We realized very quickly that we can launch a small number of cars in an area right away — but then not create a healthy

business that helps the city,” said Sherif Marakby, president and chief executive of Ford Autonomous Vehicles. Waymo, the company formed out of Google’s nearly decadeold self-driving car project, is already carrying selected families and transit employees

in self-driving minivans in the Phoenix area, along with safety chaperones in the back seat. The company said it plans to open a driverless service to the public in parts of Arizona by year’s end. Brian Kenner, the District’s deputy mayor for planning and economic development, said

he’s pleased “frankly, to not be the tip of the spear, full-on, in autonomous vehicles.” District officials met with counterparts from Pittsburgh and representatives from Uber as part of a multi-city effort to share experiences, Kenner said. After a driverless Uber killed a pedestrian in Tempe, Ariz., in March, both Pittsburgh and Uber “have taken at least a half step back” in their aggressive push to see the technology deployed, he added. “We appreciate being sort of in the 2.0 wave around this,” Kenner said. Ford said D.C.’s openness to driverless operations gave Washington an advantage over other less-welcoming cities. Current city law requires a backup safety driver in autonomous cars, though officials said they would work, in coordination with Ford, to update those and other rules. Ford will employ the same rigor the company has used over the past century to insure its driverless technology is safe, Marakby said. But whether it’s connecting underserved areas in D.C., or enabling his elderly father, who can no longer drive, to get around his community, Marakby said he expects this work will make a major contribution. “I truly believe that, in automotive history, it’s one of the times there’s a true disruption — or I would call it opportunity — to change mobility the way that Henry Ford changed it 100 years ago.”   MICHAEL LARIS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

HATE CRIME REPORTS RISE IN MARYLAND

The increase in the number of reports of hate or bias in 2017 in Maryland compared with 2016, according to state police and records obtained through a public information request by The Baltimore Sun. In 2017, state or local police “verified” 46 percent of 398 complaints, but 52 percent were classified as “inconclusive,” meaning police couldn’t determine if they were based on hate, often because authorities couldn’t identify suspects. The most common incident was vandalism. Around 60 were assaults. (AP)

Don't Miss Tomorrow's Medallion Tuesday, October 23

MARYLAND Maryland Republicans have mounted an unprecedented effort to break Democrats’ supermajority in the state senate, hoping to capitalize on the popularity of Gov. Larry Hogan at a time when much of the nation is focused on a possible “blue wave.” Republicans, who lag in voter registration in Maryland by more than 2-to-1, must flip five seats to break the veto-proof majority that Democrats have held for nearly 50 years. The state GOP has poured more than $100,000 into mailers and Facebook ads for candidates in the main targeted races, all of which are in districts Hogan, a Republican won in 2014. The districts split in the 2016 presidential election, however, and 71 percent of Maryland voters disapprove of the job President Trump is doing, according to a Goucher Poll in September. Still, with Hogan’s approval ratings at record highs, and Democratic nominee Ben Jealous trailing him by double digits, Republican leaders think they can win if they mimic the governor’s focus on centrist, pocketbook issues. “We’re telling our candidates to focus on what people care

about and don’t go to the extremes,” said Patrick O’Keefe, the party’s executive director. In bellwether Baltimore County, a Republican first-term delegate who is challenging a four-term Democratic senator appeared last week with first lady Yumi Hogan, grinning as dozens of supporters lined up for photos. In Anne Arundel, a Republican who lost the 2014 gubernatorial primary to Hogan now has his support as he battles a progressive activist for an open Senate seat. Hogan, who needs Democratic voters to become the first reelected GOP governor of Maryland since 1954, has campaigned for several Republican hopefuls, but has not injected himself

squarely into what the party is calling the “Drive for Five.” “I don’t think there should be a two-thirds majority of either party,” Hogan said, adding that he would “of course” want to have a more friendly legislature. But the governor has not contributed funds from his $9 million war chest, and his campaign said it could not provide a list of events where Hogan had appeared in support of the candidates. Goucher College political science professor Mileah Kromer noted Hogan has “positioned himself as someone who is independent.” “I don’t know if his coattails stretch far enough,” she said. nation+world 45% of those registered cast ballots in spite of attacks and long delays AFGHANISTAN Afghanistan’s second day of parliamentary elections marred by violence and technical delays came to a close Sunday as a roadside bomb brought the two-day death toll to more than 50. Independent Elections Commission Chairman Abdul Badi Sayat congratulated voters for turning out, saying that around 4 million people out of the 8.8 million registered voters — about 45 percent — cast their ballots at 4,576 polling centers. He added that the commission hadn’t received the final turnout

reports from all 32 provinces. President Ashraf Ghani lauded citizens for participating despite threats from the Taliban and Islamic State affiliate against those planning to vote. “Afghans did not only show their enemies that they would not surrender to any threats or warnings, but that they also have the power and will to defeat their enemies,” Ghani said in a televised speech. The biggest turnout was in Kabul and the lowest in the southern Uruzgan province, the IEC said. Preliminary results will not be released before mid-November and final results will not be out until December. The first parliamentary elections since 2010 were held

offers to negotiate with the Kabul government. The U.S.-backed government is rife with corruption; many Afghans said they didn’t expect voting to be fair. Officials at polling stations struggled with voter registration and a new biometric system that was aimed at stemming fraud but instead created enormous confusion because many of those trained on the system did not show up for work. The biometric machines arrived just a month before polls and there was no time to do field testing. The Taliban had vowed to attack the election, and on the first day of polling at least 36 people were killed in nearly 200 attacks, according to the government.

Central American migrants walk Sunday on a road linking the Mexican cities of Ciudad Hidalgo and Tapachula.

Migrant caravan grows, continues its trek north Group swells to 5,000, defying Mexican guards on its way toward U.S. IMMIGRATION A growing throng of Central American migrants resumed their advance north from southern Mexico on Sunday, overwhelming Mexican government attempts to stop them at the border with Guatemala. Their numbers swelled to about 5,000 overnight, and at first light they set out walking toward the Mexican town of Tapachula, 10 abreast in a line stretching approximately a mile. Several hundred more already had applied for refugee status in Mexico and about 1,500 were on the Guatemalan side of the Suchiate River, hoping to enter legally. It was not immediately clear where the additional travelers had materialized from since about 2,000 had been gathered on the Mexican side Saturday night. But people have been joining and

leaving the caravan daily, some moving faster than others. As they passed through Mexican villages on the outskirts of Ciudad Hidalgo, they drew applause, cheers and donations of food and clothing from Mexicans. Besi Jaqueline Lopez carried a stuffed polar bear, the only toy of her two daughters, Victoria, 4, and Elisabeth, 3, as they trudged beside her and her husband, David Martinez. Lopez said she was a business administration graduate but that she couldn’t find work in Honduras. She said she wants to reach the U.S. but would stay in Mexico if she could find work. Nestor Rogelio Reyes, 34, said he was deported from the U.S. last year after spending eight years in Ohio. He said he left behind two American daughters and an American wife. “As soon as I heard about it on television, I decided right away,” he said about joining the caravan. One large group of migrants voted by a show of hands to continue north en masse, then

marched to the bridge crossing the Suchiate River. Mexican authorities refused mass entry via the bridge, instead accepting small groups for asylum processing. Many became impatient and circumvented the border gate, crossing the river on rafts, by swimming or by wading in full view of the hundreds of Mexican police on the bridge. They were not detained upon reaching the Mexican bank. On Sunday, federal police monitored the caravan and had a few units escorting it. President Trump played up the threat as he stumped for GOP candidates. “These are some bad people coming through. These aren’t babies, these aren’t little angels coming into our country,” he said Friday at the White House. At a rally Saturday in Elko, Nev., Trump suggested that the Democratic Party was behind the caravan, and he thanked Mexico for its assistance in deterring the migrants. (AP/THE WASHINGTON POST)

WASHINGTON U.S. national security adviser John Bolton, above, faces two days of high-tension talks in Moscow starting today after President Trump announced his intention to withdraw from a landmark nuclear weapons treaty. Trump’s announcement that the U.S. would leave the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces, or INF, treaty brought sharp criticism Sunday from Russian officials and from former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, who signed the treaty in 1987 with President Ronald Reagan. Trump said Russia has violated terms of the treaty that prohibit the U.S. and Russia from possessing, producing or test-flying ground-launched nuclear cruise missiles with a range of 300 to 3,400 miles. Russia has repeatedly denied such allegations. Konstatin Kosachev, head of the foreign affairs committee in Russia’s upper house of parliament, said on Facebook that a U.S. withdrawal from the treaty would mean “mankind is facing full chaos in the nuclear weapons sphere.” The treaty helps protect the security of the U.S. and its allies in Europe and the Far East, but has constrained the U.S. from developing new weapons. The U.S. will begin developing them unless Russia and China agree not to possess or develop the weapons, Trump said. China isn’t a party to the pact. JIM HEINTZ (AP)

Congolese rebels killed 15 civilians and abducted a dozen children in an attack at the epicenter of the latest deadly Ebola outbreak, Congo’s military said Sunday, as the violence again forced crucial virus containment efforts to be suspended. “It will be very hard to stop the outbreak if this violence continues,” said the World Health Organization’s emergencies chief, Peter Salama. Confirmed Ebola cases have reached 202 in this outbreak, including 118 deaths. Allied Democratic Forces rebels have killed hundreds of civilians in recent years and are among several militias active in Congo’s far northeast. (AP)

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday he might postpone a planned demolition of a West Bank hamlet to allow time for a negotiated solution with its residents. Israel has come under heavy criticism, with major European countries urging it to avoid the demolition of Khan al-Ahmar. The International Criminal Court’s chief prosecutor recently said such a move could constitute a war crime. Israeli officials said alternative solutions have emerged from various sources and Netanyahu wanted to give them a chance. Netanyahu’s hard-line coalition criticized the delay. (AP)

Jordan’s King Abdullah II said Sunday that he has decided not to renew parts of his country’s peace treaty with Israel. Abdullah released a statement that said he intends to pull out of two annexes from the 1994 peace agreement that allowed Israel to lease two small regions, Baqura and Ghamr, from the Jordanians for 25 years. The leases expire next year, and the deadline for renewing them is Thursday. The lands were leased to Jewish farmers early last century, but then became part of Jordan after the kingdom gained independence in 1946. Israel seized one area in 1950 and the other in 1967. (AP)

Turkey to detail killing Officials to announce findings from probe into Khashoggi’s death, upping ante for Saudis

Police find 63 fetuses in search of funeral home

AP

ISTANBUL In a sign of growing pressure on Saudi Arabia, Turkey said it will announce details of its investigation into the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi on Tuesday, and U.S. congressional leaders said the Gulf kingdom should face severe consequences for the death of the writer in the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul. The announcement on Sunday by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan that he will “go into detail” about the Khashoggi case in a speech in parliament heightened hopes for some clarity. The case has been shrouded in mystery, conflicting accounts and shocking allegations since Khashoggi, a critic of Saudi Prince Mohammed bin Salman, disappeared after entering the consulate on Oct 2. Erdogan spoke after Saudi Arabia, in a statement early Saturday, finally acknowledged that 59-year-old Khashoggi had died in the consulate, though its explanation that he was killed in a “fistfight” was met with international skepticism and allegations of a cover-up designed to absolve Prince Mohammed of direct responsibility. Saudi Arabia said 18 Saudis were arrested and that several top intelligence officials were fired. Pro-government media in Turkey have reported a different narrative, saying a Saudi hit squad of 15 people traveled to Turkey to kill the Washington Post columnist before leaving the country hours later in private jets. “Why did these 15 people come here? Why were 18 people arrested? All of this needs to be explained in all its details,”

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says he will reveal details about the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, shown here on CCTV footage preparing to enter the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul on the day he was last seen alive.

Erdogan said. Meanwhile, Istanbul’s chief prosecutor summoned 28 more staff members of the Saudi Consulate, including Turkish citizens and foreign nationals, to give testimony on Monday, Turkish state broadcaster TRT reported. Prosecutors have previously questioned consulate staff; some Turkish employees reportedly said they were instructed not to go to work around the time that Khashoggi disappeared. Also Sunday, images that were obtained by TRT World, a Turkish news channel, showed Khashoggi as he arrived at a police barrier before entering the consulate on Oct. 2. The images, taken from security camera video, show the writer being searched before continuing toward the building. Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said on Sunday that Khashoggi’s killing was “a rogue operation” and that “we don’t know where the body is.’”

Exit poll: Anti-EU Polish populists make some gains in local elections

There was ‘deception’ President Trump initially said the Saudis’ explanation of Jamal Khashoggi’s death was credible. But in an interview with The Washington Post late Saturday, Trump conceded that “there’s been deception.” Still, he defended Saudi Arabia as an “incredible ally” and expressed hope that Prince Mohammed bin Salman was not involved. Trump has talked about possible punishment but said he didn’t want to halt a proposed $110 billion arms sale to Saudi Arabia because, he maintained, it would harm U.S. manufacturers. (AP/TWP)

“The individuals who did this did this outside the scope of their authority,” he said. “There obviously was a tremendous mistake made and what compounded the mistake was the attempt to try to cover up. That is unacceptable to the government.” However, a leading U.S. Senate Republican said the Saudi

explanation, which followed initial denials from the kingdom that it knew anything about Khashoggi’s fate, wasn’t credible. Bob Corker, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said Saturday on CNN’s “State of the Union” that he believed Prince Mohammed was behind the killing. The crown prince has “now crossed a line and there has to be a punishment and a price paid for that,” Corker said. California Rep. Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House intelligence committee, said on ABC’s “This Week” that the killing should be a “relationshipaltering” event for the U.S. and Saudi Arabia. “We ought to suspend military sales, we ought to suspend certain security assistance and we ought to impose sanctions on any of those that were directly involved in this murder,” Schiff said. DETROIT Police removed the remains of 63 fetuses from a Detroit funeral home and regulators shuttered the business amid a widening probe of alleged improprieties at local funeral homes. Detroit police Chief James Craig said officers found 36 fetuses in boxes and 27 others in freezers during Friday’s raid at the Perry Funeral Home. He said he was “stunned” by the discovery, which came a week after the remains of 10 fetuses and one infant were discovered in a ceiling at Detroit’s defunct Cantrell Funeral Home. Those remains were found after state regulators in Lansing received an anonymous letter. State investigators said Friday’s findings point clearly toward criminal offenses of state laws regulating funeral homes that could be felonies. Craig said the investigation into the Perry Funeral Home began after a man who has sued that business over its handling of remains of infants and fetuses saw coverage of the discoveries at the Cantrell Funeral Home and told his attorney to contact police. The recent discovery of the 10 fetuses and one infant at the Cantrell Funeral Home came after state inspectors in April shuttered that business after finding 21 improperly stored bodies, some of them covered in mold, in the facility. Since April, 38 unattended bodies and 269 containers of cremated remains have been discovered in the facility. (AP)

Cowboys kicker Brett Maher misses a 52-yard field goal attempt as time expires that would have tied the game.

Washington stretches its NFC East lead after Dallas misses game-tying field goal REDSKINS 20, COWBOYS 17 Redskins linebacker Ryan Kerrigan’s strip-sack of Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott was recovered for a touchdown by linebacker Preston Smith with just under five minutes left in the fourth quarter Sunday, and Washington held on to edge Dallas 2017 when a last-second field-goal attempt by Brett Maher went off the left upright. What would have been a 47yard kick became a 52-yarder when Louis-Philippe Ladouceur was called for a snap infraction. The Kerrigan-Smith play that provided the winning points was Washington’s fourth sack of Prescott, who appeared to use smelling salts after taking a shoulder to his helmet at the end of a run in the first quarter.

Prescott lost two fumbles in the game, including one on an earlier fourth-and-1 keeper. The Redskins (4-2) won consecutive games for the first time this season and stretched their lead atop the NFC East to 11/2 games over the Eagles and Cowboys. The Redskins also dropped the Cowboys to 0-4 on the road, 3-4 overall, as they head into their bye week. Washington won thanks to its staunch defense and 99 yards on 24 carries by Adrian Peterson, who helped mask the latest so-so performance by QB Alex Smith and an iffy offense that was missing three injured playmakers. The Redskins twice had to settle for short field goals in the second half despite having first-and-goal opportunities. On

each of those possessions, Alex Smith missed an open receiver in the end zone. He finished 14-for-25 for 178 yards, including a 23-yard TD on a swing pass to Kapri Bibbs in the first quarter. But there were some questionable decisions, including running out of bounds on third down with 78 seconds left, stopping the clock before a punt gave the ball back to Dallas. The Redskins limited Ezekiel Elliott, the NFL’s No. 2 rusher entering the week, to 33 yards on 15 carries. He ran 10 times for only 13 yards in the first half, his second-fewest total through two quarters in his pro career. Prescott was 22-for-35 for 273 yards, with one TD pass and

one TD run. He connected with rookie receiver Michael Gallup on a 49-yard score a minute before halftime that made the score 7-7. Later — after Kerrigan’s key play made it 20-10 — Prescott scored on a 1-yard draw to cut Dallas’ deficit to three points with 1½ minutes remaining. In the first half, Prescott could be seen waving something near his nose as he headed back into the game after being checked in the medical tent after a big blow to his head from cornerback Greg Stroman. Prescott was slow to get up, Dallas punted on fourth down, and while Washington had the ball, he was looked at on the sideline. The QB didn’t miss a play. HOWARD FENDRICH (AP)

Another top RB gets shut down The Redskins’ defense had one goal Sunday: Stop Ezekiel Elliott. The Cowboys’ star running back, above, entered the game second in the NFL in rushing, averaging 97.7 yards per game and 5.0 yards per carry. Well, the Redskins’ defense did just what it set out to do. Elliott finished with 33 yards on 15 carries (2.2 yards per rush). Last season, the Redskins allowed an NFL-high 134.1 yards rushing a game. Now, Washington might have one of the top rush defenses in the league. Before Elliott, it shut down the Cardinals’ David Johnson (37 yards), the Saints’ Alvin Kamara (24 yards) and the Panthers’ Christian McCaffrey (20 yards). After holding four of the league’s best backs to fewer than 40 yards on the ground, maybe it’s worth taking this defense seriously. JEFFREY TOMIK (EXPRESS)

Justin Tucker had made 222 straight extra points before missing Sunday against the Saints.

JUSTIN TUCKER MISSED THE FIRST CONVERSION OF HIS CAREER after the Ravens scored

the potential tying TD with 24 seconds left and the Saints escaped with a win Sunday in Baltimore. Drew Brees threw two TDs and engineered a comeback that enabled the Saints (5-1) to wipe out a 10-point deficit. It was 24-17 before Joe Flacco directed the Ravens (4-3) on an 81-yard drive that ended with a 14-yard TD pass to John Brown. That seemingly set up OT, given that Tucker was the only NFL kicker without a miss since the ball was moved back in 2015. He made the first 222 tries of his career. But

Cam Newton tossed a 1-yard TD pass to Greg Olsen with 1:22 left and the Panthers overcame a 17-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat the host Eagles. Wes Horton sacked Carson Wentz, forcing a fumble on fourth down from the Panthers 14 to seal the victory. The Panthers improved to 4-2 with the biggest comeback in franchise history. The Eagles fell to 3-4. Down 17-0, the Panthers started their rally when Curtis Samuel ran in from the 14 on a reverse. Newton finished 25 of 39 for 269 yards and ran for 49 yards. (AP)

Tom Brady threw for three TDs and the Patriots hung on to beat the Bears in Chicago when Kevin White was stopped at the 1 on a 54-yard pass from Mitchell Trubisky in the final seconds. Four or five defenders swarmed White after he leaped to haul in that long heave, preventing him from crossing the goal line while preserving the fourth straight win for New England. The Patriots (5-2) also got two special teams TDs against the Bears (3-3). Brady improved to 5-0 against Chicago, one of five teams yet to beat him. (AP)

19

Philip Rivers threw for 306 yards with two TDs and the Chargers held on for a win in London after the Titans failed twice on a go-ahead 2-point conversion with 31 seconds left. Marcus Mariota completed 24 of 32 passes for 237 yards and a TD for the Titans (3-4), throwing a 1-yard pass to tight end Luke Stocker on fourth down to pull within one before failing on two 2-point attempts, the second after a defensive penalty. The Chargers (5-2) won their fourth straight despite missing Melvin Gordon (hamstring). (AP)

Jaguars QB Blake Bortles fumbled on the third play of each half, leading to 10 points and his benching in a home loss to the Texans (4-3), who won their fourth straight game and took a one-game lead in the AFC South. The Jaguars (3-4) turned to Cody Kessler, who finished 21-of-31 for 156 yards, one TD and one pick. (AP)

United defeats NYCFC to clinch a playoff berth MLS Wayne Rooney scored twice, Luciano Acosta had a goal and an assist and D.C. United wrapped up a playoff berth with a 3-1 victory over New York City FC on Sunday at Audi Field. Acosta was the spark plug for United, setting up Rooney, above, eight minutes into the game and scoring from distance in the 24th minute. Acosta, who is tied for the league lead with 17 assists, weaved through a number of defenders as he dribbled down the left sideline and then turned in at the end line. As he neared the goal, he found Rooney in front for his team-leading 11th goal. Acosta then notched his 10th goal, pouncing on a loose ball just outside the top of the box after a defender tapped it away from Rooney and curling it into the net. Rooney made it 3-0 with a penalty kick in the 74th minute. United (14-11-8) is unbeaten in nine straight matches and has five straight wins. After playing 12 of 14 games on the road to start the season, United sat in last place at 2-7-5. Since the July 14 opening of Audi Field — and the debut of Rooney — the club is 12-4-3. United, which will play its last game of the regular season next Sunday at the Chicago Fire (4:30 p.m.), returns to the MLS playoffs after finishing in last place in the Eastern Conference last season. MUST-SEE THIS WEEK

1 ‘Heathers’ 10 p.m. Thursday on Paramount Network

Samin Nosrat, far right, travels the world to explore the elements of cooking in “Salt Fat Acid Heat.”

Beauty in imperfection Samin Nosrat’s Netflix series ‘Salt Fat Acid Heat’ is unlike any cooking show on TV STREAMING There’s a perfect word that sums up Netflix’s new cooking show, “Salt Fat Acid Heat,” and it emerges over a meal that its star, Samin Nosrat, 39, is enjoying with her hosts in Japan. As they tuck into some chicken and rice balls, the elderly woman who has helped prepare the meal laments that the rice balls are not the perfect shape. “The thing I love is wabisabi, that handmade quality that makes it human,” Nosrat tells her host, using the Japanese term for finding beauty in imperfection. Wabi-sabi is one of the things that makes “Salt Fat Acid Heat,” named for the four factors of successful cooking and her cookbook of the same name, remarkable. The show and its

star exude it. It is Netflix’s first instructional cooking show, and it doesn’t look anything like the rest of that genre, which is too often the domain of cheerful domestic goddesses. It’s also a travel show — Nosrat takes her viewers to a different country that exemplifies each component in the show’s title over four binge-ready episodes — and it doesn’t look anything like those shows, usually full of brash men. “When I first started getting cuts of the show and I would show my friends … everyone’s reaction was, ‘It’s really you!’ ” Nosrat says. While Nosrat does not cook the way normal people cook — she’s much, much better — she does some of the same things we do.

$78M

A fresh perspective One the thing that sets Samin Nosrat’s “Salt Fat Acid Heat” apart is who she is: a Persian-American hosting a show in a genre where, usually, the people who look like her show up to make food for a white host to learn about. “There is a really fine line between being the discoverer and being a curious traveler,” Nosrat says. M.J.

She winces and cries her way through dicing a pile of onions. She makes mistakes. She throws a dinner party, and no one drinks out of fancy stemware. “I have no problem being portrayed as a person who doesn’t know everything,” she says. “I

think it’s kind of a teaching tool.” And she eats the way real people eat: sometimes taking too big of a bite, so she has to pause and chew before she can speak again. When she eats something she really likes, you can see pleasure spread across her face. One of the extraordinary things about “Salt Fat Acid Heat” is how many women appear in the show. They are there as friends and cultural guides for Nosrat, or they’re elderly home cooks, eager for the chance to reveal their secrets. “The bulk of all cooking has been done by women,” she says. “And yet, in popular culture and in media, it’s very rarely that women are given credit for that.”

Taye Diggs, left, stars as a high school football coach who recruits Daniel Ezra to play for him in “All American.”

MARC SILVER | BROADCAST MUSE

‘All American’ way: CW tackles football, race and teen drama I hate to be like every other TV writer, but it’s true what they say: “All American” on the CW (9 p.m. Wednesdays) is what you’d get if you put “The O.C.” and “Friday Night Lights” in a blender and added a racial twist. The premise is that the star African-American footballer from Crenshaw High, the charming yet sometimes cocky and moody and pugnacious Spencer James (Daniel Ezra), is recruited to play for posh Beverly High. The recruiter is coach Billy Baker (Taye Diggs), an NFL star until he busted his knee. Since recruiting

from outside a school’s zone is not allowed, Baker does some creative rule bending. The show is “inspired” by the life of former NFL player Spencer Paysinger, who is a consulting producer. The fictional Spencer isn’t sold on the idea at first. Does he really want to leave his neighborhood and friends and be an outsider in a rich-kid school? Then again, maybe he does want to quit a school where a drive-by shooter fires into a football game. So off Spencer goes, ultimately lured by the coach’s promise to fulfill his dreams of playing pro football. The plot thickens with soap opera suds. Two female students are flirting with Spencer. One

of them is the queen of the school’s social circle. The other is the biracial, recovering-drug-user daughter of coach Baker. Booze flows freely at high school parties. And there are hints of a Big Family Secret involving Spencer’s absentee dad. What lifts “All American” above the cliched teen melodrama is its unflinching look at the blatant and subtle ways racism plays out — from the white parent who declares, “That boy doesn’t belong here” to the classmate who won’t share his laptop with computer-less Spencer. Even though the blackand-white divide is a tough topic, the show still plays with stereotypes. At an after-school beach outing, Spencer says with a grin, “This is what rich kids do at 5 p.m. on a Tuesday!” He also wants to know: “What is it with white people and mayonnaise?” Read Marc’s previous columns at washingtonpost.com/muse
