A passenger says a Greyhound bus driver on a trip to New York City got lost in Cleveland and drove in circles for several hours before returning to the bus terminal. WOIO-TV reported Arin Choo says passengers began asking questions Tuesday night when they noticed the same sights over and over. Choo says the driver eventually conceded he was lost and returned to the terminal, where he left two passengers he claimed were disruptive. (AP)
What looked like a drug deal at a North Carolina airport turned out to involve only soap. RDU airport officers arrested Tarvares Hargrave, Jason Anderson and Luz Ortega on drug-trafficking charges. But when a lab test came back, police filed different felony charges Tuesday. Police had believed Anderson and Ortega sold 3 pounds of cocaine to Hargrave. Instead, it was “10 bars of Ivory soap wrapped in thick plastic wrap.” (AP)

This year’s fall foliage is less than impressive

ANIMALS From September — make that late August — through the end of the calendar year, or for as long as supplies last, no American is far from the seasonal scent of pumpkin spice. Not even American zoo animals. The powder is sprinkled in lion enclosures at Smithsonian’s National Zoo. It is dotted in the exhibit that’s home to Fred, an American elk at the Oklahoma City Zoo. It is dusted about the living space of bears and foxes at the Cincinnati Zoo. And these animals love it, keepers say. But few furry creatures embrace the pumpkin spice lifestyle as enthusiastically as Bei Bei, the National Zoo’s young panda, who was introduced to the autumnal additive last year and immediately doused his head with it. His caretakers sometimes use pumpkin spice to lace a rotted log, creating a combination that Bei Bei finds bewitching. “With pandas, if they really like a smell, they try to rub it all over their body,” says Laurie

It’s always pumpkin season
Thompson, assistant curator of giant pandas at the National Zoo. Pumpkin spice is not the only spice used to scent zoo enclosures. It is one of about 30 to 40 scents used in the National Zoo’s great cats exhibit, for example. All are used for what’s known in zoo lingo as “scent enrichment” — the practice of exposing animals to smells that encourage natural behaviors, keep them interested in their surroundings or get them moving. Pumpkin spice — along with its component flavors, such as cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves — is
“We use it all the time. They’d probably be sad if we only used it in the fall.” KATY JULIANO, a big cat keeper at The National Zoo, saying lions and tigers love pumpkin spice all year
a favorite of many zoo residents. The panda propensity for immersion in a preferred odor is called “scent anointing,”
Thompson said, and Bei Bei’s mother, Mei Xiang, also does this with pumpkin spice. At the National Zoo, big cat keepers have been using pumpkin spice for years, says keeper Katy Juliano. “I think Starbucks copied us,” she jokes. “That used to be our No. 1 — and for a long time, the only — spice we used here, because it’s so popular with the lions and tigers,” Juliano says. “Something about the nutmeg and cinnamon combination is really, really exciting for them.” KARIN BRULLIARD (THE WASHINGTON POST)
As the Washington area heads into the period when fall foliage usually peaks locally, color is on the increase, but green still tends to be the dominant color. An Oct. 25 report from the Foliage Network shows that all but the western parts of Maryland and Virginia are showing “low” color. The Foliage Network also predicts that “moderate” fall colors are the best that can be expected this year. (TWP) TRANSPORTATION

U-Va. bans 10 for march by white supremacists Action comes a year after torch-lit campus rally that turned violent
Richard Spencer, who helped organize a rally that turned violent last year, is one of the 10 people now banned from U-Va.’s campus.

CHARLOTTESVILLE The University of Virginia on Friday imposed a four-year ban from campus on Richard Spencer and nine other people who participated in a white supremacist march on the school’s grounds last year. Spencer, a U-Va. graduate, led the torchlight procession of 150 to 200 marchers chanting, “Our blood, our soil” and “Jews will not replace us!” through campus on Aug. 11, 2017. The march culminated with participants surrounding and attacking a much smaller group of counterprotesters who had circled a statue of Thomas Jefferson, the university’s founder. The following day, Spencer and the others took part in the white supremacist Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville that led to violent clashes and the death of counter-protester Heather Heyer, who was run over by a car that police say was driven by a man with neoNazi ties. “The trespass warnings issued today reflect our commitment to ensuring the safety of our community while upholding the principles of freedom of speech and assembly,” U-Va. President

Jim Ryan said in a statement. Spencer, in a written response to a request for comment, said: “Ideas have no jurisdiction and ultimately can’t be censored. That said, I have no immediate plans to engage in activism on campus, at U-Va. or anywhere.” The university announcement of the no-trespass orders followed a yearlong investigation by the U-Va. Police Department in coordination with state and federal law enforcement agencies that identified the 10 individuals as “either committing or conspiring with others to carry out acts of violence or other conduct that directly threatened the health
and safety of members of the community and other people on Grounds,” Assistant Vice President and Chief of Police Tommye S. Sutton said in a statement. “We have drawn a distinction between free speech and conduct that is aimed to intimidate others and promote violence. Such conduct and intimidation will not be tolerated.” A violation of the no-trespass order is a criminal trespass offense and violators would be subject to arrest. According to university policy, trespass warnings expire four years after the date the warning is served. JOE HEIM (THE WASHINGTON POST)
The District is designating curbside space for ridehailing services such as Uber and Lyft at various locations across the city — an effort to reduce the number of vehicles that stop to pick up and drop off passengers in bike lanes, crosswalks and travel lanes. The District Department of Transportation is adding the pickup and drop-off zones at five hot spots where visitors are dependent on the services to get around. Those sites are the nightlife hub of 14th and U streets, the National Zoo and Georgetown in Northwest; the Wharf in Southwest; and Union Market in Northeast. They are expected to go live later this year, following a public comment period and the installation of signage. (TWP)

Va. criminal database missing over 750K cases VIRGINIA As staff members of the Virginia State Crime Commission were reviewing the state’s Central Criminal Records Exchange, they made a stunning discovery: The state court system had recorded about 11 million convictions dating to 2000, but the criminal records database showed only about 10.2 million convictions. More than 750,000 records were not in the system maintained by the Virginia State Police, including more than 300 murder convictions, 1,300 rape convictions and 4,600 felony assault convictions. This is the database courts and police use to check a person’s prior record, often to determine what charge or sentence
“What I can discern is there is confusion and breakdowns and these need to be resolved.” SEN. MARK OBENSHAIN,
R-Harrisonburg, on the cases missing from Virginia’s criminal database used for gun and background checks
is appropriate. It’s a database that state police in Virginia, and around the country, use to determine whether someone is eligible to buy a gun. It’s what state agencies and employers check to see if someone has a conviction that might disqualify
them from working at, say, a child care center. It’s also the repository for fingerprints that investigators use when trying to match a print at a crime scene to a possible perpetrator. The crime commission, which researches justice issues and recommends solutions to the Virginia General Assembly, determined that the problem stemmed from failures to enter a defendant’s fingerprints into the system when he or she was charged. If that step is missed, no record of a person’s arrest is in the database. About 90 percent of the 751,154 missing records, or more than 675,000, lacked fingerprints. Another 76,000 were missing due to other errors. TOM JACKMAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Bomb suspect shared common themes with Trump on social media
WPLG-TV VIA AP
NATIONAL SECURITY Mail bomb suspect Cesar Sayoc lived in an alternate universe where monstrous reptiles stalk people in Florida’s Everglades, a malevolent Jewish billionaire pays American children to stage school shootings and German politicians are secretly being conceived using Adolf Hitler’s frozen sperm. Sayoc’s hallucinatory world, pieced together by The Associated Press from the digital residue of his now-disabled Twitter accounts, hints at the toxic news diet of the Florida man who stands accused of mailing pipe bombs to more than a dozen of the country’s most prominent left-leaning public figures. But Sayoc’s stew of animal gore and partisan hate does more than provide insight into the man arrested Friday in suburban Fort Lauderdale, Fla. It also gives a taste of how conspiracy theories are finding an increased salience in America’s public sphere — and a sometimes-eager purveyor in the White House. “They are more prominent in our political discourse,” said Joseph Uscinski, the co-author of “American Conspiracy Theories,” who explained that President Trump won the Republican nomination in 2016 in part by bringing “conspiracy-minded Republicans” to the polls. Trump has since disavowed one of his trademark conspiracies — the lie that Barack Obama

Grocery store shooting may be a hate crime The fatal shooting of two black grocery patrons by a white gunman Wednesday is being investigated as a possible hate crime, a U.S. official said Friday. Police said that minutes before arriving at a Kroger grocery store in Jeffersontown, Ky., the gunman, Gregory A. Bush, attempted to enter a historically black church. Bush has been charged with murder and other crimes in the deaths of the man and the woman at the Kroger. News outlets also reported that Bush made a racial comment after the shooting. (AP) MEDIA

brain-altering poisons and that Clinton indulged in child sacrifice. One particularly off-thewall story claimed that German Chancellor Angela Merkel was created in a Soviet experiment to resurrect Hitler using a secret stash of the Nazi dictator’s sperm. Other targets of his rage included the high school shooting survivors from Parkland, Fla., some of whom drew right-wing hate when they began lobbying for gun control this year. Sayoc was also obsessed with George Soros, the Jewish investor who has long served as a boogeyman for neo-Nazis and anti-Semites. In more than 40 posts, Sayoc accused Soros of paying Parkland shooting survivor David Hogg to help fake the massacre.
Like Trump, Sayoc despised CNN, posting a photo montage on July 2 that appeared to threaten its New York headquarters with an inferno. And also like Trump, who exults in degrading his opponents with nicknames, Sayoc came up with his own pet vocabulary for the targets of his ire, calling them “slime,” “con job” or “fraud.” Adam Enders, who has studied conspiracy theory at the University of Louisville, said there is no evidence Republicans are any more conspiratorial than Democrats. But Enders did say the promotion of paranoid thinking by Trump and other top Republicans might have a hardening effect on those already ensconced in conspiracy theories. RAPHAEL SATTER (AP)

Immigration advocates ask whether the delays are politically motivated
IMMIGRATION More than 700,000 immigrants are waiting on applications to become U.S. citizens, a process that once typically took about six months but has stretched to more than two years in some places under the administration of President Trump. The wait times have prompted
some immigrant advocates to ask whether the delays are aimed at keeping anti-Trump voters from casting ballots in elections. “People are motivated to participate, and they’re being frustrated from being able to participate in the elections they’re excited about,” said Manuel Pastor, director of the University of Southern California’s Center for the Study of Immigrant Integration. The number of immigrants aspiring to become U.S. citizens surged during 2016, jumping 27

percent from a year earlier as Trump made cracking down on immigration a central theme of
his presidential campaign. At first, the federal government kept up with the applications, but then the wait grew. Backlogs are nothing new in the U.S. immigration system. It often takes years to receive asylum or to be deported. But naturalization — the final step to become an American citizen, obtain a U.S. passport and receive voting rights — had not been subject to such delays in recent years. Now the average wait time for officials to decide on applications is more than 10 months. It takes up to 22 months in Atlanta and as long as 26 months in parts of Texas, according to official estimates. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services said the longer waits

to naturalize are because of the surge in applications, not slower processing. The agency decided 850,000 cases in 2017, up 8 percent from a year before. Despite “a record and unprecedented” spike in applications, the agency is operating more efficiently and effectively and “outperforming itself,” spokesman Michael Bars said in a statement. To become an American citizen, immigrants must hold green cards for at least three years, demonstrate good moral character and pass English and civics tests. Citizenship applications typically rise during presidential election years as immigrants get excited about the prospect of voting. AMY TAXIN (AP)

PITTSBURGH Early investigative details suggest a virulent anti-Semite needed only a few minutes, three pistols and an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle to carry out the deadliest attack on Jews in U.S. history, killing 11 people inside a Pittsburgh synagogue. The dead include a 97-yearold woman, a husband and wife, and two brothers, all of whom were Bowers at Saturday morning services inside Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life synagogue when Robert Bowers, 46, allegedly burst in through an open door, screaming anti-Semitic slurs and shooting. The Pittsburgh resident is also accused of wounding six other people, including three police officers shot during a firefight, and faces a raft of assault, homicide and hate crimes charges. “They’re committing genocide to my people,” the suspect told a SWAT officer after being shot and captured, according to a federal criminal complaint released Sunday. “I just want to kill Jews.” After the victims were named at a news conference Sunday morning, Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto called the attack the “darkest day of Pittsburgh’s history.” He also disputed President Trump’s suggestion that the synagogue should have had armed guards. “The approach we need to be looking at is how we take the guns — the common denominator of every mass shooting in America — out of the hands of those looking to express hatred through murder,” Peduto told reporters. The shooter targeted a congregation that is an anchor of Pittsburgh’s large and close-knit Jewish community, a massacre that authorities immediately

A man with Bowers’ name had posted anti-Semitic statements on social media before the shooting, expressing anger at a nonprofit Jewish organization in the neighborhood that has helped refugees settle in the United States. In
what appeared to be his last post, hours before the attack, the man wrote: “I can’t sit by and watch my people get slaughtered. Screw your optics, I’m going in.” “This gunman went in to try and kill as many Jews as possible,” said Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro. “We’ve never had an attack of

In an interview with NBC’s Vaughn Hillyard on Saturday, Vice President Mike Pence denounced the shooting in Pittsburgh and said the U.S. has “no tolerance for the kind of antiSemitic violence that reared its ugly head today.” But he also defended the often explosive language used by President Trump, maintaining that the president “connected to the American people because he spoke plainly.” “Everyone has their own style,” Pence said in the interview. “And frankly, people on both sides of the aisle use strong language about our political differences. But I just don’t think you can connect it to threats or acts of violence, Vaughn. And I don’t think the American people connect it.” (TWP)
such depravity where so many people were killed,” said Jonathan Greenblatt, chief executive and national director of the
Anti-Defamation League. Robert Jones, the FBI special agent in charge of the case, called it “the most horrific crime scene I’ve seen in 22 years with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.” The Pittsburgh massacre comes less than two weeks before midterm elections, hours after a man was arrested and accused of mailing pipe bombs to prominent Democrats, and is the latest in a seemingly endless series of mass shootings and hate-fueled attacks — including a possible hate crime in which a man killed two black shoppers at a grocery store in Louisville. It is almost certain to intensify a national debate over bigotry and hatred in American politics — not to mention gun control. The ADL said anti-Semitic incidents had jumped more than 50 percent to nearly 2,000 documented events in 2017 — a year in which white nationalism seemed to surge in visibility, overlapping with support for Trump’s anti-immigration policies and demagogic political rhetoric. Like political leaders across the world, Trump has condemned the synagogue attack. At a political rally on Saturday evening, he called the massacre “an assault on humanity” that “will require all of us working together to extract the hateful poison of anti-Semitism from our world.” But Trump has shown no signs of listening to critics who have for years warned that his rhetoric incites anti-Semites. Later in Saturday’s speech, for example, the president again attacked “globalists” — a word that reportedly appeared in one of Bowers’ antiSemitic posts and is interpreted on the far right to mean powerful Jews. President: PM was fired over assassination plot
During an international conference in Prague on Sunday, U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said he met with Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister and urged a full and complete investigation into the killing of writer Jamal Khashoggi. Mattis told reporters that Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir “had no reservations at all” about the need for the kingdom to be transparent about the death of the Washington Post columnist at the kingdom’s consulate in Istanbul. Mattis also said that the evidence Turkey has collected “will ensure there is more than one review” of Khashoggi’s death. (AP)
English soccer club Leicester City said Sunday that Thai owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, 60, was among five people who died when his helicopter crashed Saturday. The entrepreneur’s helicopter burst into flames shortly after taking off from the soccer field. Police said two victims were members of Vichai’s staff, Nursara Suknamai and Kaveporn Punpare. Also killed were pilot Eric Swaffer and passenger Izabela Roza Lechowicz. Vichai bought Leicester in 2010 and provided the funds that helped the team win the Premier League title in 2016, its first English title in its 134-year existence. (AP)
Sri Lanka’s president said Sunday that the main reason he decided to fire his prime minister was the alleged involvement of a Cabinet minister in a presidential assassination plot. In a televised address to the nation, President Maithripala Sirisena said a person questioned by investigators had revealed the name of a minister in an alleged plot to assassinate him and a former defense secretary. He said the only choice for him was to dismiss Ranil Wickremesinghe and invite his former nemesis, ex-strongman Mahinda Rajapaksa, to take over as prime minister and form a new government. (AP)

nation+world Former army captain harnessed anger over economy, corruption BRAZIL A 63-year-old populist renegade rode a wave of voter rage to capture Brazil’s presidency on Sunday, marking South America’s most dramatic shift to the right since the end of the Cold War-era military dictatorships. Jair Bolsonaro, a former army captain, bested leftist Fernando Haddad in Sunday’s runoff, winning nearly 56 percent of the
vote, according to an official tally of 92 percent of votes cast. His win adds Latin America’s largest nation to a growing list of countries where staunch right-wing nationalists have scored victories at the ballot box. The election came as faith has collapsed in Brazil’s corruptionstained political class, the economy has floundered and gang killings have surged, leaving the nation feeling rudderless and besieged. Haddad — a one-term mayor of Sao Paulo, Brazil’s largest city — struggled to connect with the electorate. He ran largely

this year on corruption charges. Bolsonaro launched his campaign with no significant political allies, a small party machine and a paltry budget. Using the power of social media, he spoke directly to voters in all-caps tweets and Facebook Live videos. Promising to make Brazil “great,” Bolsonaro campaigned to fix specific domestic woes — corruption, crime, the economy. But some argue that his success might not have been possible were this not the age of Trump. ANTHONY FAIOL A AND MARINA LOPES (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘Just getting started’
REDSKINS 20, GIANTS 13 There’s a cockiness about the Redskins’ defense. They’re shutting down some of the NFL’s top running backs, making life miserable for opposing quarterbacks, not giving up many points — and doing a lot of talking. Why not? The unit is the major reason the NFC East-leading Redskins (5-2) have matched their best start since 2008. Safety D.J. Swearinger intercepted two passes, Matt Ioannidis had 2½ sacks, and the Redskins rode their defense to a third straight win, a 20-13 decision over the offensively inept New York Giants on Sunday in East Rutherford, N.J. The Redskins sacked Eli Manning seven times, forced the two turnovers, limited Saquon Barkley to 38 yards rushing and made big play after big play in sending New York (1-7) to its fifth straight loss. “We still have done nothing around here,” Swearinger said. “We beat them, but we haven’t

won the division. We haven’t won the championship. We haven’t won the Super Bowl. There’s no room for lackadaisical. We haven’t done nothing yet. We’re just getting started.” In some sense that’s true. The Redskins are winning and their offense is not lighting it up. Adrian Peterson caught a 7-yard TD pass from Alex Smith and ran for a season-high 149 yards, with the last 64 coming
on a touchdown jaunt with 3:06 to play. Dustin Hopkins added field goals of 53 and 39 yards. “I think we’ve invested some resources in the defense, hoping they would pay off,” said Redskins coach Jay Gruden, whose team has a 1½-game NFC East lead. “In this division, you’ve got to play great defense, in my opinion. This is critical for our success; until we get going offensively we have to win games like this. There’s
World Series Game 5 between the Red Sox and Dodgers ended after Express’ deadline
nothing wrong with that.” The three-game winning streak is their longest in two seasons. A major difference Sunday was that Washington capitalized in the red zone. Smith (20 of 32 for 178 yards) capped a 10-play, 73-yard drive with a TD pass to Peterson, who stepped out of a tackle by backup linebacker Nate Stupar at the 4-yard line. New York had two trips inside the Washington 20. Swearinger ended the first, stepping inside of Odell Beckham Jr., to intercept a slant pass at the 8-yard line. Aldrick Rosas kicked a 37-yard field goal on the second drive. Washington never trailed in the second half as its defense kept Manning ducking most of the day. “Our confidence is already high,” said Redskins linebacker Zach Brown. “We don’t care what running back is back there. … We’re going to make you get out of that running game. … We want you to pass the ball and we’ll let our boys back there do their thing.” TOM CANAVAN (AP)
Defense gets 7 sacks of Manning This was the perfect matchup for the Redskins’ pass rushers to get on track. Immobile Giants QB Eli Manning entered Sunday as the secondmost-sacked passer in the league, and he finished the day alone at the top. The Redskins’ defense, which had just 14 sacks in its first six games, was able to wrestle Manning to the ground for a seasonhigh seven sacks. Matt Ioannidis and Ryan Kerrigan combined for four of those, making Manning uncomfortable in the pocket for most of the game. Racking up sacks could become a trend for this unit, with two of the Redskins’ next three opposing quarterbacks — the Falcons’ Matt Ryan and the Texans’ Deshaun Watson — also among the most-sacked passers in the league. Vrana set up to break out CAPITALS Jakub Vrana, 22, played a key role during the Capitals’ run to a Stanley Cup title in June. While he was playing well and getting chances at the net early this season, the effort went mostly unrewarded on the stat sheet. That’s finally changing. Vrana scored his second goal of the season and recorded his fourth point in four games Saturday
in a 4-3 shootout win at Calgary. His maturation in this second season has the Capitals envisioning their Vrana young forward as a potential breakout offensive star. “You want to feel confident there, and obviously the confidence is not there when you get those chances and you cannot bury them,” Vrana said of his early struggles. “ So you have to find a way to get your confidence back, and that is [at] practice. … Eventually it is going to go in.”
Luis Suarez scores hat trick to lead Barcelona to 5-1 rout of Real Madrid
In an up-and-down rookie year, Vrana scored 13 goals with 14 assists in 73 games. He was at his best in the playoffs, though, finishing with three goals, including the first goal of Washington’s Cup-clinching Game 5 against the Vegas Golden Knights. “He has been a little more consistent in his game than maybe compared to last year,” Caps center Lars Eller said. “It’s something that comes with maturity and age and experience and understanding what is going to make him successful down the line.” SAMANTHA PELL (THE WASHINGTON POT)

Spelling it out: ‘Sabrina’ explores empowerment women might use it if they were free to act. The show’s first season explores how the teen witch tries to strike a balance between gaining greater access to her abilities and winning increased latitude to use them as she sees fit. It’s easy to read the series as a resistance parable. But the series is more gimlet-eyed than that, full of occasions when Sabrina’s spellcasting leads her into morally dubious territory. If “Chilling Adventures” merely cheered Sabrina’s independent streak, it wouldn’t be nearly as interesting as it is. Instead, the show captures an important real-world dynamic: Moments like this one, in which previously marginalized people rise to power, are cause for celebration — and for wrestling with tough conundrums. It may be true that feminism has something on offer for everyone: Men have plenty to gain from the revision of old gender roles that forced them to shut down their emotions, put pressure on them to be sole breadwinners and pushed them to be hyper-physical, or

It doesn’t take signing a contract with the devil for most of us to confront the elemental questions of the moment. But early in “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” which premiered Friday on Netflix, 15-year-old half-witch Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka) finds herself grappling with an important choice. “I want both. I want freedom and power,” Sabrina tells Prudence (Tati Gabrielle), a fellow teen witch, wondering why the Dark Lord wants to end her friendships with mortals and transfer her to a private magical high school. The specifics of Sabrina’s dilemma are fantastical — and a departure both from the bubbly and bubble-haired comics character who made her debut in 1962 and the sunny 1996 sitcom starring Melissa Joan Hart. For all its riffing on a long-running franchise, “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” couldn’t be timelier with its questions about power and how

even violent. But it’s also the case that when women take on leadership positions, some individual men will feel as if they’ve lost out. “When will the world learn? Women should be in charge of everything,” Ms. Wardwell (Michelle Gomez), Sabrina’s demon-possessed teacher, purrs in her direction. That conviction leads Sabrina and her friends Rosalind (Jaz Sinclair) and Susie (Lachlan Watson) to get politically active. But it also encourages Sabrina to torment her principal (Bronson Pinchot)
and to terrorize and blackmail the football players who have been harassing Susie. Power knows no gender. And it’s impossible to use gender to predict the ways in which people will use their abilities and their authority. There’s no question that it’s fun to watch Sabrina work her magic. But her sense of righteousness is a spell that she’s casting on herself, with potentially dangerous consequences.

I’m planning to make one of the creepy recipes from “The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell” — a hybrid baking/crafting/“Tales From the Crypt”-type show that launched on Netflix this month. And I’m confident I’ll have it done in time for Halloween — Halloween, 2019, that is. McConnell’s horrifying
edibles cannot be whipped up easily. She uses ingredients I’ve never heard of, like piping gel to add a moist patina to sinister eyeballs, and miniature sculpting tools to add pit marks to human bones (which are really pretzel sticks wrapped in peanut-butter dough and dipped in white chocolate). Each roughly 25-minute episode has a plot of sorts, and three or four baking and crafting demos. McConnell’s

“Deleting the character completely misses the point of how we need more South Asian representation to combat the fostered stereotypes!” @AVNINDERA1, reacting to rumors that “The Simpsons” may write IndianAmerican character Apu off the show. The controversy over Apu intensified in April, with many South Asians saying the TV industry hasn’t learned how to depict South Asians, and dragging the show’s stereotypical representation of an Indian man — voiced by a white actor — running a convenience store. But some say dropping Apu would be even worse, arguing that erasing his character would make South Asians even less visible on screen.

@BILLB204, reacting after President Trump told reporters that Saturday’s mass shooting in Pittsburgh could have been prevented if the synagogue had “some kind of a protection,” like an armed guard. (Trump has suggested arming regular citizens in the past.) The president further insisted that gun laws had “little to do with” the shooting, which killed 11 people. His denial of the factors behind the shooting left many Twitter users disgusted.
