A New York seafood dealer, 42-year-old Tommy Zhou, was sentenced to 1 ½ years in prison last week for illegally trafficking more than $150,000 worth of baby eels from Virginia. Called elvers, baby eels are valuable because they are sold to Asian aquaculture companies so they can be raised to maturity and used as food. Elvers, sometimes sold illegally for $2,000 a pound, can be legally harvested only in Maine and South Carolina. (AP)
A doctor in Altoona, Pa., said she has been inundated with calls from men trying to set up appointments after hearing she was permitted to prescribe medical marijuana. Dr. Liang Bartkowiak said last week she was mentioned in the media as being eligible to certify medical marijuana users, and that prompted men to start phoning her office. She said she was shocked because she is a gynecologist who treats only women. (AP)
A town supervisor in Sheridan, N.Y., was cited for trying to bury his defunct auto repair garage in a hole. Louis Delmonte’s business had been rundown for years, WIVB-TV reported last week, so he borrowed an excavator and dug a big hole next to the building. State environmental officials said Delmonte tore down half of the building and dumped it in the hole before they stopped him, saying he lacked proper permits. (AP)

A flippin’ high price to pay POLITICS It was the middle-finger salute seen around the world. Juli Briskman was on her cycling path in Northern Virginia last month when the presidential motorcade roared past her. She wasn’t planning to make a statement, but thinking about President Trump upset her, and she decided to flip the bird. She had no idea the sentiment had been snapped by photographer Brendan Smialowski for Agence France-Presse and Getty Images. And that night, it started popping up all over. Turns out it has now cost the 50-year-old marketing executive her job. On Halloween, after Briskman gave her bosses at Akima LLC, a government contracting firm, a heads-up that she was the unidentified cyclist in the photo, they took her into a room and fired her, she said, escorting her out of the building with a box of her things. Her bosses at Akima, who have not returned emails and calls

“I wasn’t even at work when I did that. But they told me I violated the code of conduct policy.” JULI BRISKMAN, talking about how she was fired after she told her company that she was the woman flipping off President Trump’s motorcade in a photo that went viral in late October.

Her mistake, said Bethesda lawyer Bradley Shear, who specializes in social media issues, was her honesty. “You can’t see her face, she is totally unidentified in that picture,” he said. “But once she identified herself to her employer, they had to consider that information.” The company takes into account how the image of an employee flipping off the president looks and whether it might draw negative attention or threats, Shear said. Briskman has contacted the American Civil Liberties Union about the case. Her bosses told her they do support her First Amendment rights. But they wanted her to “be professional,” she said. Does Briskman regret that middle finger, that reflexive moment, that what-the-heck-isgoing-on-in-our-world reaction? “I’d do it again,” she said. PETULA DVORAK (THE WASHINGTON POST)

SUGGESTIONS
Where should the president dine out in D.C.? D.C. chefs were put on notice last week when President Trump, who has a penchant for steak cooked well done, said on the “Larry O’Connor” show that he’s going to start going to more D.C. restaurants. Washington Post food critic Tom Sietsema has a suggestion: Should the president try a steakhouse other than his own BLT Prime, he could consider the expansive new Rare Steakhouse on I Street NW. A reservation at Rare, an import from Wisconsin, could be seen as a sign of gratitude to a state that helped put him in office. (TWP)

A last-minute overview of today’s statewide election in Virginia VIRGINIA Virginia voters are making their choices for governor, attorney general, lieutenant governor and delegates to the state House today. Polls are open 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voters need a photo ID. Valid forms of identification include a driver’s license, passport or student ID. A voter who forgets ID can cast a provisional ballot but will have to complete followup steps to ensure it is counted. Virginia does not allow sameday registration.
Governor Republican Ed Gillespie, a White House adviser to President George W. Bush and multimillionaire lobbyist, has run on lower taxes and tougher policies toward immigrants in the state illegally, and on preserving the state’s Confederate statues. Democrat Ralph Northam, a pediatric neurologist and lieutenant governor, has promised to continue many of the policies of current Gov. Terry McAuliffe, who is barred from seeking a second term. Northam has championed increased spending on public education, tighter gun rules and strong support for abortion rights. Libertarian Cliff Hyra is running on a campaign platform of protecting personal freedoms and limiting government power.

Lieutenant governor
Republican John Adams is challenging Democratic incumbent Mark Herring in the only attorney general contest in the country this year. Adams , a former federal prosecutor, is making his first run for political office. Herring, a former state senator, is seeking his second term as Virginia’s top lawyer. Herring drew national attention early in his first term when he said he would not defend a 2006 state constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage in Virginia. Adams, an opponent of gay marriage, sharply criticized Herring during the campaign for refusing to defend a measure approved by Virginia voters and the state legislature. Herring said his position was validated by the Supreme Court, which struck down gay marriage bans as unconstitutional.
Democrat Justin Fairfax and Republican Jill Vogel are competing for the largely ceremonial position that’s often a steppingstone to higher office. Vogel, a state senator from Fauquier County and attorney for right-leaning causes, has cast herself as a Trump supporter with bipartisan credentials who puts “principle before party.” She’s touted her willingness to break with her party in supporting an openly gay judge, on environmental issues, and on low-profile but important issues such as redistricting reform. Fairfax is a former federal prosecutor and the only AfricanAmerican statewide candidate. He’s made a campaign issue of legislation Vogel sponsored in 2012 that would have required women to receive an ultrasound before getting an abortion. (AP)

Police: Officer shot driver who was ramming a vehicle
7 police officers among highest-paid city workers
Transportation officials in the region are warning drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to be more alert as daylight saving time has ended, bringing darker commuting hours. In the past 30 days, crashes in the region have resulted in four pedestrian deaths. The fatalities have prompted representatives from the D.C., Maryland and Virginia to start a new “Street Smart” safety awareness campaign. Police departments are stepping up efforts to enforce traffic laws protecting pedestrians and bicyclists. Fines for violations such as failing to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks and jaywalking can be as much as $500. (AP)
Authorities said a police officer in suburban D.C. shot and wounded an SUV driver who had been ramming a vehicle that someone else was in. Police in Montgomery County said a man called 911 Sunday evening, saying that someone was ramming his car with an SUV at a Silver Spring shopping center. Police said a responding officer shot the unidentified SUV driver. The driver was taken to a hospital in serious condition. No other injuries were reported. Investigators did not immediately release the identities of those involved in the shooting. It was unclear what prompted the initial altercation. (AP)
New data shows seven of Baltimore’s 10 highest-paid city employees in the past fiscal year were police officers. The Baltimore Sun reports that Police Commissioner Kevin Davis was the only police employee whose salary alone ranked in the top 10. But other employees more than doubled their compensation through overtime. The highest-paid city worker was Police Sgt. William Harris Jr., whose salary is about $97,000 but who earned nearly $245,000. Harris is a 28-year veteran. State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby was the secondhighest paid; her salary is nearly $239,000. (AP)

President Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe attend a joint news conference in Tokyo on Monday.
Abe supports Trump’s hard line on N. Korea
Japan’s prime minister offers warm welcome during president’s visit
TOKYO President Trump on Monday continued his tough line on North Korea, standing alongside Japanese Prime Minster Shinzo Abe and promising to work closely with Japan to confront “the North Korean menace.” Trump said “the era of strategic patience is over” and promised to counter “the dangerous aggressions” of North Korea. “The regime continues development of its unlawful weapons programs, including its illegal nuclear tests and outrageous
launches of ballistic missiles directly over Japanese territory,” he said. “We will not stand for that.” Abe said Japan backs Trump’s previous comments that “all options are on the table” and similarly favors increasing pressure on North Korea rather than continuing dialogue with the nation. Journalists asked Abe about reports that Trump had previously suggested to the prime minister that the “samurai” nation should have shot down the North Korean missiles that flew over it before crashing into the Pacific Ocean earlier this year. Trump jumped in to answer on Abe’s behalf. “He will shoot them out of
the sky when he completes the purchase of lots of additional military equipment from the United States,” Trump said. His remarks came during the president’s second full day in Japan — the first stop on a fivecountry, 12-day swing through Asia. Trump and Abe tried to showcase their close personal relationship, but Trump still took a hard line earlier Monday on U.S.-Japan trade. “For the last many decades, Japan has been winning,” Trump told a gathering of business leaders. “We want fair and open trade, but right now our trade with Japan is not fair and it’s not open. But I know it will be, soon.”

Surprise! unboxing videos on YouTube to prove it. The Big Surprise, which was released six weeks ago, is sold out online at Target, Wal-Mart and Toys R Us, and is commanding up to 10 times its asking price on eBay. (TWP)

Pressure is on for Congress to avert shutdown POLITICS An early December government shutdown is a real possibility, since a divided Congress can’t agree on military spending, Democrats insist on help for young immigrants and President Trump’s position can change with each lawmaker he talks to. Most of Washington is focused on overhauling the tax code, but lawmakers face a combustible mix of must-do and could-do items, with the current government spending bill set to expire Dec. 8. On the list are immigration and a U.S.-Mexico border wall; an impasse over children’s health care; pent-up demand for budget increases for the Pentagon and domestic agencies; and hurricane aid. For Republicans, there’s an urgency to avoid a debilitating shutdown just as the GOP hopes to wrap up an overhaul of the tax code. And GOP defense hawks are adamant that the Pentagon receive a huge 2018 budget hike of as much as $90 billion. Democrats are pressing demands of their own. They want protections for immigrants who were brought to the U.S. illegally as young children. They also demand budget increases for domestic agencies. Meanwhile, the tax debate is taking up energy, time and political capital, and GOP leaders seem reluctant to issue controversial decisions that might harm their bill’s chances. ANDREW TAYLOR (AP)

Saudis accuse Iran of possible ‘act of war’ RIYADH , SAUDI ARABIA Saudi Arabia on Monday accused archrival Iran of direct responsibility for a missile attack on the Saudi capital last week, issuing a stark warning that the strike may have constituted an “act of war,” according to the official Saudi press agency. The warning also came as questions have emerged about the temperament of Saudi Arabia’s young crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, whose startling purge of princes, officials and businessmen in his country last week reinforced what his critics said was a reputation for impulsive behavior. President Trump on Monday tweeted his support of the crackdown, saying, “I have great confidence in King Salman and the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia ...” On Sunday, shortly after carrying out a purge of royal cousins and other high-ranking officials, the emboldened crown prince announced that a Saudi-led coalition would forcibly close all of Yemen’s ground, air and sea ports. The missile was fired from neighboring Yemen on Saturday by the Houthis, a rebel group with ties to Iran that has been

Broadcom offers $103B to take over Qualcomm
U.S. missions in Turkey have resumed processing visa applications by Turkish citizens on a “limited basis” after Turkey reassured Washington that no local staff would be detained or arrested for “performing their duties,” the U.S. Embassy said Monday. Last month, the U.S. halted most visa services for Turkish citizens after Turkish authorities arrested an employee at the U.S. consulate in Istanbul. Turkey retaliated by halting visa services in the U.S. for Americans traveling to Turkey. (AP)
Broadcom made a $103 billion offer for rival chipmaker Qualcomm, the tech industry’s largest attempted takeover. Qualcomm, the maker of chips found in smartphones and tablets, is already the No. 3 chip supplier, according to research firm Gartner, trailing Intel and Samsung. A combination with Broadcom would not change that. But a transaction between the two would likely raise antitrust concerns. The combined company would have about 40 percent of the cellphone chip market. (AP)

fighting against a Saudi-led military coalition for more than two years. The war has seen countless cross-border attacks — including thousands of Saudi airstrikes across Yemen — and endless recriminations between the Saudi and Iranian governments. Though it caused no casualties,
the missile strike was the deepest yet into Saudi territory, and it came as a confrontation between Saudi Arabia and Iran appears to be near a boiling point, raising fears of a military escalation. The Saudi statement claimed the government had “confirmed the role of Iran’s regime in manufacturing these missiles and smuggling them to the Houthi militias in Yemen.” It added that the government “reserves its right to respond to Iran in the appropriate time and manner.” Iranian officials denied any connection to the missile strike. “The enemy uses every opportunity to accuse Iran, and we will certainly reject it,” said Iran’s defense minister, Gen. Weiner begins sentence for sexting a teenage girl
Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe on Monday fired a vice president who had previously been seen as a likely successor, removing an obstacle to the presidential ambitions of Mugabe’s wife. Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa was removed from office “with immediate effect,” the government said, opening the way to the possible appointment of Grace Mugabe to the post. The 93-year-old president and his 52-year-old wife have in recent months accused Mnangagwa of plotting to oust Zimbabwe’s leader, who has been in power since independence from white minority rule in 1980. The man accused of attacking Sen. Rand Paul on Friday might soon face more serious criminal charges because the Kentucky Republican is suffering from several rib injuries, law enforcement officials said Monday. An attorney for the man charged in the attack, Rene Boucher, also said Monday that the dispute had “absolutely nothing to do with either’s politics or political agendas” and was merely “a very regrettable dispute between two neighbors.” But new information about Paul’s injuries could prompt prosecutors to charge Boucher with a felony, according to a spokesman for the Kentucky State Police. Anthony Weiner has ditched Carlos Danger and T-Dog for yet another alias: federal inmate 79112-054. Weiner, 53, reported Monday to Federal Medical Center Devens to begin serving a 21-month term for sexting with a teen girl, the Bureau of Prisons confirmed. Devens is one of only nine federal prisons that offers sex offender treatment and is the facility closest to New York. His sexting habit derailed his career as a congressman, as well as his bid for mayor of New York — before it landed him in prison for swapping messages with a 15-year-old girl. Weiner’s wife, Huma Abedin, 41, has filed for divorce. (AP)

Pastor Frank Pomeroy and his wife Sherri join a news conference near First Baptist Church on Monday. Their 14-year-old daughter died in the shooting. JAY JANNER (AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN VIA AP)
SUTHERLAND SPRINGS, TEXAS The gunman who killed 26 people at a small-town Texas church had a history of domestic violence and sent threatening text messages to his mother-in-law, a member of First Baptist, before the attack, authorities said Monday. A day after the deadliest mass shooting in state history, investigators revealed that deputies had responded to a domestic violence call in 2014 at Devin Patrick Kelley’s home involving a girlfriend who became his second wife. Later that year, he was formally ousted from the Air Force for assaulting his ex-wife and a child in 2012. In the tiny town of Sutherland Springs, population 400, grieving townspeople were reeling from their losses. The dead ranged from 18 months to 77 years old and included multiple members of some families. “Our church was not comprised of members or parishioners. We were a very close family,” said Sherri Pomeroy, the wife of the church pastor, who was out of town with her husband when the attack happened. “Now most of our church family is gone.” The couple’s 14 -year-old daughter, Annabelle Pomeroy, was among those killed. About 20 people were wounded in the attack. Ten of them were still in critical condition Monday. Kelley’s mother-in-law sometimes attended services there, but the sheriff said she was not at church Sunday. Investigators said at a press conference Monday that Kelley was not believed to have attended the church. The massacre appeared to stem from a “domestic situation”

and was not racially or religiously motivated, Texas Department of Public Safety Regional Director Freeman Martin said. He did not elaborate. Investigators said during a press conference Monday evening that Kelley died of a selfinflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was also shot twice by bystanders who chased him in a car. The 26-year-old shooter also used his cellphone to tell his father he had been shot and did not think he would survive, authorities said. The investigation showed that
Offense not reported Devin Kelley was able to buy weapons because the Air Force failed to report his 2012 domesticviolence conviction to the federal database that is used to conduct background checks on would-be gun purchasers, federal officials said Monday. Air Force spokeswoman Ann Stefanek said in an email that the service is launching a review of its handling of Kelley’s case and taking a comprehensive look at Air Force databases. (AP)

Kelley had displayed a pattern of violence spanning years. While in the military, Kelley served in Logistics Readiness at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico from 2010 until his 2014 discharge, Air Force spokeswoman Ann Stefanek said. He was discharged for the assault involving his previous wife and had served a year of confinement after a 2012 court-martial. When sheriff’s deputies went to his home to check out the domestic violence complaint involving him and his then-girlfriend, people in the house said there was no problem, and no arrests were made. Kelley married the girlfriend two months later. Also in 2014, he was charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty in Colorado after a neighbor reported him for beating a dog. Kelley initially refused to speak with officers about the incident. He denied abusing the animal but complied with an order to pay almost $370 in restitution. He was also the focus of a protective order issued in Colorado in 2015. Authorities said Kelley lived in New Braunfels, about 35 miles north of the church. Investigators were reviewing social media posts he made in the days before the attack, including one that appeared to show an AR-15 semi-automatic weapon. Less than two months ago, Kelley had started a job as an unarmed security guard at a nearby resort. Law enforcement authorities said Kelley owned four guns, including the three he had with him during the attack: a Ruger AR-15 that was used in the church and two handguns that were in his car. The weapons were purchased — one each year — from 2014 to this year. The assailant did not have a license to carry a concealed handgun, Freeman Martin said. JIM VERTUNO,
TEXAS Johnnie Langendorff, above, said Monday he was driving to Sutherland Springs on Sunday to visit his girlfriend when a barefooted man who had been exchanging gunfire with the suspect in a deadly church shooting jumped into his pickup truck and exclaimed, “We need to go get him.” Moments later, the two men were in a high-speed pursuit of an SUV driven by Devin Patrick Kelley, 26, whom police say went on a rampage at First Baptist Church that left 26 people dead and about 20 others injured. Langendorff, a 27-year-old Seguin resident, said he didn’t know the name of the armed man in his pickup. Police said he was armed with an AR assault rifle. When he jumped into Langendorff’s truck, they began pursuit of Kelley’s vehicle in a chase that reached 95 mph. Sutherland Springs resident Julius Kepper said the armed man was his neighbor, Stephen Willeford. Willeford, 55, told The Dallas Morning News on Monday that he was the first person to confront Kelley at the church. “I didn’t want this and I want the focus to be on my friends,” he told the newspaper. “I have friends in that church. I was terrified while this was going on.” Langendorff said Kelley eventually crashed into a ditch. Police arrived minutes later and found Kelley dead in his SUV.

The Holcombes lost children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren SUTHERLAND SPRINGS, TEXAS Within the walls of the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs on Sunday morning, together as always, were three generations of the Holcombe family. Bryan Holcombe was walking up to the pulpit, preparing to lead the congregation in worship,
when a gunman began to spray bullets at the worshipers. Holcombe, an associate pastor for the church, was killed in the gunfire, his parents, Joe and Claryce Holcombe, told The Washington Post. Karla Holcombe, Bryan’s wife of about four decades, was also killed, Joe Holcombe, 86, said. Bryan and Karla Holcombe’s son Marc Daniel Holcombe, 36, also was killed, Joe Holcombe said. Marc Daniel had an infant

in addition to the unborn baby. All at once, Joe and Claryce Holcombe lost children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a future great-grandchild. Joe and Claryce Holcombe first heard about the shooting an hour after it happened from a member of a different church they attend. Then, in a conversation with the church’s head pastor, they started to hear the wrenching news. “Bryan and Karla?” Joe Holcombe asked. “They’re both in heaven,” the pastor said. As the day went on, they would learn of the others. The Holcombes were among 26 people authorities say were killed in Sunday’s shooting. SAMANTHA SCHMIDT (THE WASHINGTON POST)

RICK SNIDER | SPORTS GURU
Pride in their play: Redskins’ defense runs on swagger The swagger starts with cornerback Josh Norman telling teammates they are lions, aggressors and saviors. It intensifies with cornerbacks Bashaud Breeland, Kendall Fuller and Quinton Dunbar protecting their zones with righteous anger. And it erupts with safety D.J. Swearinger, who shows this pride of lions it’s not only hunting season, but time to eat. The Redskins shocked the Seahawks in Seattle on Sunday in perhaps their most surprising victory since a team of
scabs beat the Cowboys during the players’ strike in 1987. An upset win in which Washington held Seattle to 14 points could be the start of a dominant run by a defense that sputtered over recent weeks after injuries took away firstround defensive end Jonathan Allen, linebackers Mason Foster and Trent Murphy and safety Stefan McClure. Washington (4-4) still has a puncher’s chance of earning a wild-card spot, but only if its resilient defense can continue to play like it did in Seattle. This is the most mentally tough defense the Redskins have had since their Super
Bowl stretch in the ’80s and early ’90s. Washington has talent, depth and an attacking defensive coordinator in Greg Manusky, but those aren’t the defense’s key ingredient. It’s the leadership brought by Norman, Swearinger and inside linebacker Zach Brown. Even safety DeAngelo Hall returned after a 14-month rehab from a torn ACL to slap Seattle’s Hail Mary pass away from receiver Tanner McEvoy, who is eight inches taller than Hall. Past Redskins defenses had plenty of people who claimed to be leaders but were happy to cash their checks whether the team won or lost. Deion Sanders and Bruce Smith came to Washington for payoffs, not playoffs. The Redskins needed warriors, not mercenaries. By signing Norman in 2016 and Swearinger this offseason, they found leaders who play with immense pride. Sometimes swagger is necessary, and for years it feels like it’s been missing at
Redskins Park. The defensive huddle used to feel like an eighth-grade dance where shy kids hug the walls of the gym. Now Swearinger and Norman are doing the Carlton and owning the room. Against Seattle, Swearinger intercepted a potentially tying two-point Seattle conversion that was eerily reminiscent of a miscue from quarterback Russell Wilson that kept the Seahawks from winning Super Bowl XLIX. Swearinger raced halfway down the field trying to score two points before lateraling to Norman, who kept the play alive before lateraling the ball back to Swearinger. The Redskins didn’t score, but all-out effort spoke volumes about the tandem. In the past, the Redskins would import a high-priced lone wolf to lead the defense. This year’s unit is showing that lions own the field.
As had long been expected, Matt Wieters has exercised the 2018 player option in his contract and will return to the Nationals next season, The Washington Post reported Saturday. AP confirmed that report Monday, which was the deadline for the catcher to decide. Wieters will earn $10.5 million in 2018, completing a two-year deal worth $21 million. He could have chosen free agency but likely would have earned far less that way after he struggled this year. The 31-year-old hit .225 with 10 homers, 52 RBIs and a .632 on-base-plusslugging percentage, the lowest OPS of all catchers with at least 400 at-bats. But Nats pitchers generally praised Wieters’ gameplanning and pitchcalling instincts. (TWP)

NBA The Wizards have no problems expressing themselves. Their candor plays well on the internet, and their confidence has garnered attention beyond the Beltway. Before their prime-time game Friday against the Cavaliers, clips

There’s a lot of things we’ve got to work on,” the center said. “First of all, we’ve got to become a more humble team and we just got to work harder.” Gortat, 33, boasts his own supersized personality — he once walked a pig on a leash through a shopping mall in Poland — but as the graybeard among the Wizards, he tends to be pragmatic. Toronto buys out Bautista, declining $17.5M option
All-Star closer Holland opts to enter free agency
Right fielder Jose Bautista’s $17.5 million option has been declined by the Blue Jays, who will pay a $500,000 buyout. Bautista, who hit 288 homers in 10 years with Toronto, became a free agent Sunday after the team turned down its half of the mutual option. Bautista turned 37 in October. Toronto general manager Ross Atkins had said Oct. 3, two days after the Blue Jays’ season ended, that the team intended to decline the option. A six-time All-Star for the Blue Jays from 2010 to 2015, Bautista hit .203 this year with 23 homers, 65 RBIs and a franchiserecord 170 strikeouts. (AP)
Right-hander Greg Holland has become a free agent after declining to exercise his $15 million player option with the Rockies. Holland, an All-Star closer last season, bolstered Colorado’s bullpen by saving a franchise record-tying 41 games in his first season back from Tommy John surgery. Holland, 31, was at his best before the All-Star break, when he converted 28 of 29 save chances and had a 1.62 ERA. He struggled in the second half, going 13 of 16 in save opportunities with a 6.38 ERA. Outfielder Carlos Gonzalez, 32, who spent nine seasons in Colorado, also is a free agent. (AP)

fit Core and stability Plank: Create the stance to start a push-up: shoulders directly over wrists, spine long, abdominals engaged, glutes squeezed and legs tight. You can also drop down to your forearms with your palms planted on the ground. Support your lower back with no overarching and keep the core tight. To add variation, you can lift one knee toward the elbow.

Make time for exercise
Give ghee a chance Upper body Push-up: This is an all-around excellent exercise and can be done in various ways. You can stand up with your hands against the wall, or start on all fours and focus only on bending the arms with a long spine, keeping your knees on the floor and creating a straight line from your knees to the crown of your head. Or try the full exercise with a straight line from the top of your head to your heels. Ideally, you’d start at a level where you can get your arms to a deep bend, close to 90 degrees.
Abdominal crunches: The key to this workout is to use your core for the work rather than pulling your neck or squeezing your glutes. Inhale, filling your abdomen with air, and on the exhale, squeeze your belly. Feel as if the exhale causes a “scooping” sensation in your stomach. Use your breath to engage your stomach. When you have that skill, you can lift your head or legs, incorporate twists or add variations.
Our exercise routines often get derailed because we can’t fit the perfect workout into our day. If you can’t make it to a gym, or a class, you might do nothing at all. It doesn’t have to be that way. Pick one exercise from each of these categories. If you do three sets of 10 reps each, it should only take seven to 10 minutes. JAE BERMAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Mobility and breathing
Aerobic and anaerobic
Squat: Start with a tall posture, open feet to eight to 12 inches and shift the weight to your heels. Imagine there is a small stool a little too far behind you and you’re sitting back into it. With the chest lifted and abdominals engaged, sit back. If you’re new to squats, actually set a chair or stool behind you. Otherwise, sit until your thighs are parallel to the floor. When standing up, have weight in your heels, squeeze the abdominals and use your glutes to stand up.
Reach for the sky and down to the floor: Standing tall, inhale and reach your fingers up toward the ceiling. Then, on exhale, reach your hands wide and stretch toward the floor. Slowly round the spine, reaching your hands to touch the floor. On an exhale, engage the abdominals and slowly unwind as you stand up tall and reach your hands to the ceiling.
Marching knee-ups: Standing tall with abdominals engaged, march in place, lifting a knee up to hip height. If adding intensity, add speed and jumps to the pace.
Lunge: Stay mindful of your feet, knees, torso and shoulders. Weight is in the front heel. Have the knee just over the ankle, and lunge down so the front thigh is parallel to the floor. When you rise, feel your glutes engage and lift you. Lateral, curtsy, walking and reverse are variations.
Round and arch: Start on all fours with your shoulders over your wrists and your hips over your knees. On an exhale, round your back, chin to chest, tucking your tailbone under as if you’re trying to reach your nose, and round your entire spine. On an inhale, arch your spine, look up and move your tailbone as if you’re reaching toward the ceiling.
Earth Treks Crystal City is hosting free indoor rock climbing Tuesdays at noon through March
Triceps dip: Similar to the push-up, but flipped over. You can keep your bottom on the floor and bend your elbows, or you can be in a tabletop position with your hips toward the ceiling while bending the arms. Fingers should face the toes, and elbows should point straight back.
Ghee is butter that is simmered to remove water and milk fats, then filtered, resulting in a cooking fat that is shelf-stable and usable at much higher heats than butter and most oils. Ghee is almost entirely free of lactose and casein, two reasons many avoid dairy. Studies show that ghee does not increase cholesterol, as it is high in short- and mediumchain fatty acids, instead of the long-chain fatty acids most associated with heart disease. Studies also find that ghee provides the fatsoluble vitamins A (for eyesight and skin), D (for bones and immune health), and E (to balance hormones and repair damaged tissue). Ghee is a saturated fat like butter, and the calories from saturated fats should make up less than 10 percent of a healthful daily diet. Luckily, very little ghee is needed to achieve a rich, creamy flavor. CASEY SEIDENBERG (TWP)
Squat jumps: Squat down, shift the weight back and jump and reach toward the ceiling. When landing, bend knees to go right back to a squat. Burpee: When first getting used to this exercise, take it step by step. As you advance, the movement becomes much more of a flow. Start standing, drop your hands to the floor and jump your legs back, and lie on the floor as quickly as possible. Then, on an exhale, pull your legs in and jump back up to a standing position.

I know it’s tempting to try to psychoanalyze this, like: Is she searching for the emotional intimacy she may lack with your dad? But that’s unfair. Neither you nor I can know what’s truly going on for her. How is the age difference really a problem? Of course, if she someday ends up committing to someone who likely has very few years left, then that
is not ideal — but there are no guarantees of life span no matter how old your partner. Bottom line, with any relationship, what matters is how she’s being treated, how she feels, what the two bring out in each other, and how they help each other be their best. And honestly? A break from emojis, ghosting and selfies sounds like your sister may be on to something.

It makes me wonder if there are bad similarities as well. They are both charming and attractive, but my ex was Jekyll and Hyde and was emotionally abusive. Nashville sticks to its guns How long can country artists avoid talking about political issues?
SUE OGROCKI (AP)
MUSIC In a year when everything in pop culture became a political flashpoint — TV sitcoms, the NFL, the Golden Globe Awards — country music managed to not say much of anything at all. But after the Las Vegas massacre — in which a gunman opened fire during Jason Aldean’s set at the Route 91 Harvest festival last month, killing 58 people and injuring hundreds in the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history — the format was suddenly linked with the contentious gun control debate. On Wednesday, millions will tune into the 51st annual Country Music Association Awards, the genre’s biggest night in the national spotlight. Can country music singers still get away with not voicing an opinion? The answer is “probably,” and the reasons are complicated. “I’ve talked to between 15 and 20 artists … and they’re torn,” says Bobby Bones, the syndicated country morning radio host who performed at the festival with his band, the Raging Idiots. “Not about how they feel, because that’s not even the issue. They’re split on just speaking out about it. The issue as a country artist is you feel like if you say something wrong, your audience is going to turn on you. … and their publicists have all said, ‘Don’t talk about it.’” The common assumption is that country singers don don’tt talk politics
Jason Aldean was playing in Las Vegas when a gunman fired into the crowd, killing 58 people.
because they’re terrified of ending up like the Dixie Chicks, who criticized President George W. Bush on the eve of the Iraq War in 2003 and wound up essentially blacklisted from the industry. The fear lingers, and often, singers think they don’t have the authority to say anything at all. “I think sometimes it’s important to speak, sometimes it’s important not to speak. [It’s about] finding that balance and also trying to not let society and social media put that pressure on you too much,” says Tyler
Hubbard of Florida Georgia Line, a nominee as Vocal Duo of the Year. The demographics of the country audience have changed over the years, with popular artists (like Florida Georgia Line, Sam Hunt, Carrie Underwood) singing against a pop-centric sound that easily fits into mainstream music; liberal-leaning cities from New York to Boston to Los Angeles have solid country fan bases. Still, country music has a massive, devoted rural audience. It’s one of the reasons that
NRA Country, the “lifestyle” arm of the National Rifle Association, sees value in partnering with Nashville singers, many of whom are avid hunters and conservationists. Artists perform at NRA Country-sponsored events, while the organization promotes new albums and features artists on its website and online TV show. “I think the first and foremost thing on my mind is the fact that people were hurt and are still hurting,” says singer and NRA Country featured artist Lee Brice, who performed at the Las Vegas festival. “When it comes to political stuff and guns and things like that — I’m all for regulation, I’m all for making things better, you know, I really am. And I think the NRA is all about that, too.” Some, however, see country artists’ reluctance to speak on anything related to guns, even education and safety, as a missed opportunity. Bill Werde, director of the Bandier Music Industry program at Syracuse University, points to a recent NPR-Ipsos poll that showed the majority of Americans, no matter what their political party, are in favor of tighter gun restrictions. “Who are these [country artists] so terrified of?” Werde said. “I am not picking on Nashville … but because of its relationship to the NRA, because of its sort of cultural affiliations to those that lean independent and Republican, country music has a unique position. I hope behind the scenes, they’ll own that a little bit.” EMILY YAHR (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Rose McGowan’s memoir is arriving early Ro
“Brave,” a memoir from Ros Rose McGowan, will hit shelves Jan. 30, HarperOne said Monday, nearly a month earlier than its pla planned Feb. 28 release. McGowan, who has accused Harvey Weinstein of raping her, has been a lea leading advocate for women confronting sexual assault and harassment. The actress said that her boo book will take on Hollywood, “the biggest cult of all,” and how she fought her way out of it. (AP) Roxane Gay will be editor of “Not That Bad,” an anthology of essays on rape culture
Krysten Ritter brings her edge to ‘Bonfire’ BOOKS As an actress, Krysten Ritter built a career playing characters with grit, most notably with her roles in Netflix’s “Jessica Jones” and AMC’s “Breaking Bad” As an author, Ritter brings that same approach to her engrossing debut suspense novel, “Bonfire,” out today. Moody with a noirish undertone, “Bonfire” explores a mystery resplendent with shadowy scenery, a tight plot and a lead character that is both fragile and strong. One could easily see Ritter playing the part of her heroine, Chicago lawyer Abby Williams, whose return to her hometown to investigate a lawsuit against a megacorporation brings back the bad memories and fears she had growing up there. Ritter ramps up the suspense as Abby is pulled into a vortex of old acquaintances and the intersection of past and present. The disappearance of Kaycee, Abby’s friend who vanished her senior year of high school, still haunts the town. The women who once bullied Abby treat the past as a joke. And Abby is again attracted to her old crush — who also was Kaycee’s boyfriend. The melding of corporate corruption and the personal pollution that Abby endures elevates the novel, which blazes to a believable, and shocking, finale. “Bonfire” shows that not only can you go home again, but sometimes you must — to escape it and reconcile the past. goes on all around you today is worth noting, but you don’t have to pay attention to every detail. You’ve got other things on your mind.
TODAY: The weather should evolve much like Monday, except it will be about 20 degrees cooler. Clouds increase during the morning. The rain that develops in the afternoon is of the light but steady variety and the air feels raw — with highs only 50 to 55 degrees. Evening rain tapers late into the night as overnight lows settle in the 40s.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) You’ll be inspired by some of the most unusual things today — and by some of the most mundane. Someone is ready to reveal a new opportunity. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Even the simple things will take time today, and you must be willing to devote whatever it takes to reach the goals you’ve set for yourself.
