Florida authorities have caught a huge lizard that terrified residents of a Miami neighborhood for months. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said Thursday the Asian water monitor is over 8 feet long. The escaped pet was first reported loose in August. Residents said it lurked in their yards and scratched at their patio doors.

A very small alligator that took a 3 a.m. stroll through a Walmart in Port St. Lucie, Fla., was removed from the premises Tuesday by Officer Michael Connor, TCPalm reported. “He scooped him up and escorted him off the property,” police spokesman Master Sgt. Frank Sabol said. “Gave him a trespass warning.” Sabol added: “If he comes back in a year he’ll be much bigger, so we’ll be on the lookout for him. We’ll be on high alert.” (EXPRESS)

A Kansas City, Mo., landlord stumbled upon an unwanted house guest while evicting a tenant: a large alligator in a hot tub. The tenant described the 150-pound reptile as “gentle as a puppy” after animal control workers were called Wednesday.

The workers also found two boa constrictors and a rabbit. The tenant, Sean Casey, said he’d owned the alligator for four years and named it Catfish. He called the reptile “a big cuddly lizard.” (AP)

D.C. hits brakes on scooters TRANSPORTATION E-scooter companies that want to continue operating in the District will need to offer a cash payment option to customers, restrict scooter speeds to 10 mph and pay substantially higher fees to the city under the latest round of regulations for the industry.

The guidelines, set to go into effect in January, also implement a fee of up to $5 a month per scooter or bike, in addition to other fees — which could add up to tens of thousands of dollars per company per year. However, companies also will be able to increase the number of scooters in their fleet to 600 from 400 — though industry officials contend that still isn’t enough to meet demand.

Some critics wonder whether, under the city’s new permit process, it will still be worthwhile for the companies to stay in the District in the long run.

The new regulations also apply to dockless bikes, which were the first to arrive in the District last year. Most bikes were gone by the end of the summer as

And dockless bike companies must provide a way for users to lock their bikes to racks or poles.

Police: Teens arrested in carjacking, robberies

MONTGOMERY COUNTY Marc Elrich has some work to do.

He was elected with a decisive mandate Tuesday to lead Montgomery County, Maryland’s most populous jurisdiction and one of its most economically powerful.

But his progressive campaign drew attacks and sharp criticism from business and development leaders in the liberal suburb, who rallied around Nancy Floreen, a longtime Democrat who dropped her party affiliation to challenge Elrich as an independent.

Floreen said Elrich, a veteran county council member like her, would be a “disaster” as county executive.

Now Elrich must repair relations with the business community as he prepares to govern a growing county of 1 million.

He must also forge a relationship with newly re-elected Gov. Larry Hogan, R, whom Elrich has criticized in the past — most recently on Facebook a few days before the election.

“In the state of Maryland, the governor’s office is a very strong, powerful office, and you need to find ways to work together,” said outgoing County Executive Isiah Leggett, D, who endorsed Democrat Ben Jealous in the governor’s race but has a close relationship with Hogan and

refused to campaign against him. “The county cannot in and of itself govern in isolation.”

Elrich, who has not heard from the governor’s office since the election, said he hasn’t said anything about Hogan that other Democrats haven’t.

“We’re both adults,” he said.

“When the dust settles, you work with everybody. That’s exactly what I plan on doing.”

Four teens ages 13 and 14 have been arrested in connection with an armed carjacking and robberies that occurred over three hours on Tuesday in Northwest and Northeast, according to D.C. police. The alleged crimes began shortly before 7 p.m. in Northeast. The youths were each charged as juveniles with various counts of carjacking, armed robbery and assault with intent to rob.

She was sentenced to jail time and four years’ probation Tuesday, in a plea deal that prevented her children from having to testify against her. Three teens allege abuse by D.C. priest THE DISTRICT A priest at one of the D.C. area’s largest Latino parishes has been accused of sexually abusing three teenage girls in 2015, but the incidents were reported to law enforcement and high-ranking church officials just last month even though two of the families told the parish around the time they happened, authorities said.

The arrest of Urbano Vazquez — assistant pastor of Shrine of the Sacred Heart in Northwest D.C. — on a single count of second-degree child sexual abuse marked the first new claim of abuse in an archdiocesan parish in almost 20 years, according to church officials.

It comes in the midst of a sprawling clergy sexual abuse crisis in the U.S. Catholic Church that has been primarily focused on allegations that leaders have covered such crimes up or otherwise improperly handled them, including not reporting them to law enforcement. Several high-ranking church officials, including D.C. Officials: Families told parish years ago but nothing was done

Father Urbano Vazquez, 46, an assistant priest at Shrine of the Sacred Heart in D.C., was arrested Wednesday on a sexual child abuse charge.

In the case of Vazquez, the main priest at the Shrine of the Sacred Heart, the Rev. Moises Villalta, has been removed and the coordinator for child protection, Sonia Marlene Aquino, has been placed on leave this week for failing to “follow appropriate protocols related to reporting claims,” the archdiocese said in a letter Wednesday to its priests.

Vazquez, 46, did not enter a plea during his appearance in D.C. Superior Court on Thursday, but in 2015 he denied one of the girls’ allegations, according to the affidavit. He could not be reached and his public defender declined to comment on the case.

Villalta was also not reachable

for comment Thursday. Aquino said she had reported the abuse to a supervisor in 2015, and her “conscience is in peace,” she said.

Vazquez has been charged in connection with the first of the three teenagers to accuse Vazquez of abuse.

Based on an agreement between Vazquez’s public defender and prosecutors, Vazquez will reside in Pennsylvania with his Catholic order and is not permitted into the District except for court-related meetings.

Vazquez is to have no contact with anyone under the age of 18 and was also required to surrender his passport.

‘Society’s problem’: What can Metro do about harassment? in the way that, for example, eating and drinking are.

Not being able to say how often complaints lead to action is a missed opportunity when Metro still faces persistent skepticism from riders about whether anything will be done if they report harassment, said Jocelyn Frye, an expert in women’s issues and a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning policy think tank. Frye served as deputy assistant to former President Barack Obama and was director of policy and special projects for former first lady Michelle Obama.

A Metro survey in April found that only half of riders who said they have been harassed reported it. That’s a sharp improvement over the 77 percent in a 2016 survey who said they’d been harassed but didn’t file reports.

But a prime reason why more incidents aren’t reported is that many “victims were unsure if anything could be done,” the most recent survey found.

Rider Effie Craven, for instance, never reported what happened to her on a Blue Line train one night in June.

As she headed toward Largo Town Center, Craven said in an interview, she found herself alone in the car, except for the man who sat in the seat across from her, leering and licking his lips.

Craven changed seats. The man followed, continuing to look and to leer.

But despite the message to “Report Sexual Harassment,” as a poster at the McPherson Square station says, it’s unclear how often anything happens to the harasser when someone does file a complaint.

That’s not to say Metro doesn’t take action. Transit police have made a number of arrests this year, particularly for the most blatant of acts, such as an incident during the Oct. 19 afternoon commute, when a man grabbed the buttocks of a woman waiting for a train at the Rosslyn station and then rubbed up against her.

But in an interview last month, Metro Transit Police Chief Ronald A. Pavlik Jr. said he couldn’t say how many of the 79 complaints Metro has received on its online form for reporting harassment so far this year had led to action.

While Metro can say, for instance, that it had arrested 39 people as of Oct. 26 for indecent exposure, it doesn’t keep track of whether those arrests were prompted by a harassment complaint or something else, like the woman in the Rosslyn incident running to a nearby officer for help.

Jessica Raven, executive director of Collective Action for Safe Spaces, an anti-harassment group, said Metro’s public education campaign makes it a leader nationally in raising awareness about harassment.

But she also said many women remain skeptical that Metro will act, particularly in cases where its own employees are accused of harassment.

Four months after Express filed a public disclosure request asking for the number of sexual harassment complaints against Metro employees and the number of disciplinary actions taken as a result, Metro hasn’t provided the information.

On June 27, @NickelButlerrr tweeted about one incident she saw at the Navy Yard station.

“The worst. Just saw a Metro employee working on a broken escalator licking his lips and catcall ladies going down the other escalator,” she said on Twitter. But she said she never reported it to Metro.

Craven, after the incident on the Blue Line, agreed the issue is complicated, and said she’s not sure what Metro could do about men who harass.

“I feel like it’s less Metro’s problem and more society’s problem,” she said.

METRO Verbal harassment was the most common type of harassment reported by riders in a Metro survey in April.

Among those who said they’d been harassed on Metro, 64 percent said it involved something being said. Second most common, at 42 percent, was leering. But while Metro rules and city laws ban riders from doing things like eating or drinking on trains and buses, nothing prohibits someone from creepily looking you up and down.

In the first six months of 2017, non-criminal harassment complaints made up a majority of the 61 harassment reports Metro received, according to a presentation to Metro’s board.

If transit officers happen to hear inappropriate remarks being made, they can tell the harasser to knock it off, said Metro Transit Police Chief Ronald A. Pavlik Jr. But that’s about all they can do.

A bill approved by the D.C. Council on May 29 aims to deal with sexual harassment in public spaces by establishing a legal definition for harassment as “disrespectful, offensive or threatening statements, gestures or other conduct” in areas such as streets, buses or trains. But it does not outlaw those actions.

The bill instead creates an advisory group to figure out how to train city employees to intervene and to figure out what can be accomplished through public education campaigns.

THOUSAND OAKS, CALIF. Gunfire still crackled at the Borderline Bar & Grill when Sgt. Ron Helus arrived. A gunman had entered the Thousand Oaks bar Wednesday night and was killing people on the dance floor.

Within minutes, Helus, a veteran sergeant with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, responded to the calls along with a highway patrolman. They were prompted by their training that changed after the Columbine High School massacre: Don’t wait. Confront the shooter.

“One subject advised she didn’t see him come out,” Helus told a dispatcher, according to audio obtained by The Mercury News. “We’re making entry.”

A few seconds passed. “We got multiple people down,” Helus said. “We need a lot of ambulances.”

Thursday morning, Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean told reporters that Helus, 54, was among the 12 killed. He died at a hospital — a year before he was set to retire with 30 years of service.

“He was totally committed, he gave his all, and tonight, as I told his wife, he died a hero,” Dean said. “He went in to save lives — to save other people.”

At a second briefing, Dean said the Ventura County community had “lost a hero.”

THOUSAND OAKS, CALIF. Terrified patrons hurled barstools through windows to escape or threw their bodies protectively on top of friends as a gunman killed 12 people at a country music bar in an attack that added Thousand Oaks to the tragic roster of American cities traumatized by mass shootings.

Dressed all in black with his hood pulled up, the gunman apparently took his own life as scores of police converged on the Borderline Bar & Grill in Southern California. The motive for the rampage Wednesday night was under investigation.

The killer, Ian David Long, 28, was a former machine gunner and Afghanistan war veteran who was interviewed by police at his home last spring after an episode of agitated behavior that authorities were told might be post-traumatic stress disorder from his military service. A mental health specialist met with him and didn’t feel he needed to be hospitalized.

Opening fire with a Glock 21 handgun with an illegal, extracapacity magazine, Long shot a security guard outside the bar and then went in and took aim at employees and patrons, authorities said. He also used a smoke bomb, according to a law enforcement official.

The dead included a veteran sheriff’s deputy who rushed in to confront the gunman, as well as a 22-year-old man who planned to join the Army, a freshman at nearby Pepperdine University and a recent Cal Lutheran graduate.

“It’s a horrific scene in there,” Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said in the parking lot.

“There’s blood everywhere.”

Survivors of the rampage — mostly young people who had gone out for college night at the Borderline, a hangout popular with students from nearby California Lutheran University — seemed to know what to do, having come of age in an era of active-shooter drills and deadly rampages happening with terrifying frequency.

IMMIGRATION The Trump administration announced new measures on Thursday that would deny asylum to migrants who enter the country illegally, invoking emergency national security powers to curb long-standing humanitarian protections for foreigners who arrive on American soil.

President Trump is preparing to issue a proclamation to assert the emergency powers, and the rule changes will be published today in the Federal Register, according to senior administration officials who briefed reporters.

The asylum restrictions are the latest attempts by the administration to assert executive powers to restrict immigrants and foreigners from entering the U.S. The new measures would continue to allow foreigners to request asylum if they enter the country legally at U.S. ports of entry, but not those who cross without authorization, administration officials said.

Migrants who cross illegally would be ineligible for asylum, but they could still be spared from deportation by qualifying for a lesser status known as “withholding of removal.”

That status does not give foreigners a path to a green card or citizenship, but functions as a kind of provisional suspension of the deportation process, revocable at any time. NICK

POLITICS Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker has no intention of recusing himself from overseeing the special counsel probe of Russian interference in the 2016 election, according to people close to him who added they do not believe he would approve any subpoena of President Trump as part of that investigation.

Since stepping into his new role Wednesday, Whitaker has faced questions — principally from Democrats — about whether he should recuse himself from the Russia investigation, given that he has written opinion pieces about the investigation and is a friend and political ally of a witness.

On Thursday, two people close to Whitaker said he has no intention of taking himself off the Russia case.

Ethics officials at the Justice Department are likely to review his past work to see whether he has any financial or personal conflicts. In many instances, the ethics office does not require a Justice Department official’s recusal but suggests a course of action. A Justice Department spokeswoman declined to comment.

In 2014, Whitaker chaired the campaign of Sam Clovis, a Republican candidate for Iowa state treasurer. Clovis went on to work as a Trump campaign adviser and has become a witness in the investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller.

The Justice Department advises employees that “generally, an employee should seek advice from an ethics official before participating in any matter in which her impartiality could be questioned.” Regulations prohibit employees, “without written authorization, from participating

in a criminal investigation or prosecution if he has a personal or political relationship with any person or organization substantially involved in the conduct that is the subject of the investigation or prosecution.”

Ethics officials might advise Whitaker that his commentary created the appearance of a conflict of interest and leave the decision to him. If they recommended forcefully that he recuse himself and he declined, Whitaker could then be referred to the Justice Department’s Office of Professional Responsibility, and his license to practice law could be put at issue.

The two people close to Whitaker said they strongly believe he would not approve any request from Mueller to subpoena the president. Mueller and Trump’s attorneys have negotiated for months about a possible interview, with no agreement in sight.

Justice Department officials said that under normal circumstances, the deputy attorney general would probably play an active, hands-on role in overseeing such a high-profile probe and that they had no reason to believe Rosenstein would now be cut out.

MEDIA White House press secretary Sarah Sanders on Wednesday night shared a video of CNN reporter Jim Acosta that appeared to have been altered to make his actions at a news conference look more aggressive toward a White House intern.

The edited video looks authentic: Acosta appeared to swiftly chop down on the arm of an aide as he held onto a microphone while questioning President Trump. But in the original video, Acosta’s arm appears to move only as a response to a tussle for the microphone. His statement, “Pardon me, ma’am,” is not included in the video Sanders shared.

Critics said that video — which sped up the movement of Acosta’s arms in a way that dramatically changed the journalist’s response — was deceptively edited to score political points. That edited video was first shared by Paul Joseph Watson, known for his conspiracy-theory videos on the far-right website Infowars.

Watson said he did not change the speed of the video and that claims he had altered it were a “brazen lie.” Watson, who did not immediately respond to requests for comment, told BuzzFeed he created the video by downloading

Side-by-side comparisons support claims from fact-checkers and experts such as Jonathan Albright, research director of the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia University, who argued that crucial parts of the video appear to have been altered so as to distort the action.

A frame-by-frame breakdown

by Storyful, a social media intelligence firm that verifies media content, found that the edited video included repeated frames that did not appear in the original footage. The repeated frames were shown only at the moment of contact and made Acosta’s

arm movement look more exaggerated, said Shane Raymond, a journalist at Storyful.

On Wednesday night, Sanders accused Acosta of “placing his hands on a young woman” and said his press credentials would be suspended “until further notice.” Press advocates called the move unprecedented.

Matt Dornic, a CNN communications executive, tweeted that Sanders’ sharing of the video was “absolutely shameful.” “You released a doctored video — actual fake news. History will not be kind to you,” he wrote.

On Thursday, Sanders said, “The question is: Did the reporter make contact or not?

The video is clear, he did.

We stand by our statement.”

Ford announced this week that it has purchased Spin, a San Francisco-based electric-scooter-sharing company. The $40 million purchase means Ford joins companies such as Alphabet, Uber and Lyft in pouring millions into the e-scooter revolution.

Scientists have found the oldest known example of an animal drawing: a red silhouette of a bull-like beast on the wall of an Indonesian cave. The sketch is at least 40,000 years old, slightly older than similar animal paintings found in famous caves in France and Spain. His Democratic rival, Stacey Abrams, refused to concede, and her campaign demanded that state officials “count every single vote.”

As the state’s top election official, Kemp oversaw the race, a marquee contest in the nation’s midterms. His resignation Thursday morning came as a hearing began for a lawsuit in which five voters asked that he be barred from exercising his duties in any future management of his own election tally.

Abrams’ campaign had repeatedly accused Kemp of improperly using his post as secretary of state and had been calling for him to step down for months, saying his continuation in the job was a conflict of interest. Kemp said he wasn’t stepping down in response to that criticism, but to start on his transition to the governor’s office.

He said an interim secretary of state had been appointed to oversee the rest of the vote count. The Associated Press has not called the election.

Abrams’ campaign has said she must pick up about 15,000 votes to secure a runoff in December.

Google to overhaul sexual misconduct policy BUSINESS Google is promising to be more forceful and open about its handling of sexual misconduct cases, a week after thousands of highpaid engineers and others walked out in protest over its maledominated culture.

Google bowed to one of the protesters’ main demands by dropping mandatory arbitration of all sexual misconduct cases.

That will now be optional, so workers can choose to sue in court and present their case in front of a jury. It mirrors a change made by ride-hailing service Uber after complaints from its female employees prompted an internal investigation. The

probe concluded that its ranks had been poisoned by rampant sexual harassment.

“Google’s leaders and I have heard your feedback and have been moved by the stories you’ve shared,” CEO Sundar Pichai said in an email to employees that was obtained by The Associated Press. “We recognize that we have not always gotten everything right in the past and we are sincerely sorry for that. It’s clear we need to make some changes.”

Last week, the tech giant’s workers left their cubicles in dozens of offices around the world to protest what they consider management’s lax treatment of top executives and other male workers accused of sexual harassment and other misconduct.

The protest’s organizers estimated that about 20,000 workers participated.

Maurice Harris is the next man in the rotation and has been filling in for Crowder in the slot.

Michael Floyd and Brian Quick also are in the mix for reps, and the team could get rookie wide receiver Trey Quinn back from injured reserve soon.

The Redskins would love to see Josh Doctson and Reed make more splash plays, but so far this season, Doctson has produced just one play of 20 or more yards while Reed has four — and none produced a touchdown.

The Capitals had a significant test Wednesday against the visiting Penguins, and forward T.J. Oshie didn’t want to miss any of it. In the first period, he took a high stick from Olli Maatta and wound up with two stitches below his left eye. But he returned after the first intermission. With 16:33 left in the game, Evgeni Malkin shouldered him in the head. Malkin was ejected and Oshie wobbled off. But until last week at Cincinnati, Navy had moved the ball just about as well as in the past, even without consistent quarterback play.

Jasper is bright, honest and highly respected by his players, just like his boss. He’s 48 and more than ready to run his own program.

Jasper also would be prepared to step into a program that has dealt with tragedy.

He knows about heartache.

His son Jarren almost died after heart surgery 15 months ago and then spent months waiting for a heart transplant, which he received in February.

Last season, Jasper spent many nights at the hospital and then went directly to work.

“I honestly don’t know how he did it,” Niumatalolo said last winter. “His emotional strength, not to mention his physical stamina throughout the whole thing, was just amazing.”

It took forever for Maryland to fire coach DJ Durkin in the wake of Jordan McNair’s death, but it didn’t take long for speculation about his successor to begin.

The lists were predictable — successful head coaches at the FCS level (Mike Houston of James Madison) and Group of Five level, and coordinators at power schools, such as Tony Elliott of Clemson and Ryan Day of Ohio State. There were plenty of other candidates, too.

The right hire’s name wasn’t mentioned because he’s never been a head coach and he’s not a coordinator at a Power Five school. But he’s more than ready to be a head coach and, just as important, would be willing to take the job.

The name: Ivin Jasper, Navy’s offensive coordinator.

Why he hasn’t gotten the chance to be a head coach yet is a mystery. He was Navy’s quarterbacks coach under Paul Johnson and became the offensive coordinator when Ken Niumatalolo succeeded Johnson as head coach in 2007.

Draggin’ us down: ‘The Girl’ doesn’t even try this time When we last left Lisbeth Salander … oh, does anyone really care where we last left Lisbeth Salander?

Well, regardless, she’s back — this time played by Claire Foy, taking over for Rooney Mara — in “The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” the second and hopefully last installment in the “Dragon Tattoo” series featuring the characters from the books by Stieg Larsson.

David Fincher directed the previous film in 2011; now Fede Alvarez is at the helm of this sort-of sequel because, I don’t know, “Don’t Breathe,” his last movie, did really well.

At the beginning of the new film, Lisbeth is working as a vigilante and hacker,

specializing in enacting vengeance upon men who hurt women, kind of a freelance feminist Batman. (This is not to say that Batman isn’t a feminist. I’m sure he is.) She’s hired to steal a computer program that would give the user the power to control every nuclear weapon in the world. Then the plot, such as it is, continues.

The story is similar to Mad Libs, but the kind you’d do with your sibling in the back seat during a road trip, when you hilariously filled in every blank with “butt” or “poop.”

The “Girl in the Spider’s Web” version would go something like “Lisbeth uses her computer to computer into the computer and motorcycles computerly to a computer.”

There are things I cannot stand when it comes to movies,

and the top three are all laziness. “The Girl in the Spider’s Web” is almost aggressively lazy. Obviously the book,

by David Lagercrantz (who continued with the novels after Larsson’s death), is somewhat to blame; it’s hard to fault the three screenwriters (who include Alvarez) for so many “well, DUH” reveals. But the buck has to stop at Alvarez’s director’s chair; he seems to have taken cliche as his muse.

He uses cheap cuts to gain cheap laughs; the car and motorcycle chases work better as commercials for Lamborghini and BMW, although the brands probably aren’t interested in advertising how bulletproof their cars are. Maybe those who can afford them get shot at a lot. I don’t know. I drive a

In fairness, Foy does an admirable job as Lisbeth. She won’t get the Oscar nod that Rooney got, but she gives the character — and consequently the film — an emotional center that a less talented actor couldn’t have carried off.

And one fight scene, set in a smoke-filled bathroom where all the characters are wearing eerie gas masks that glow red, is interesting both visually and in terms of punching.

Laziness in a movie indicates not only a lack of creativity, but a lack of respect for the audience. A good movie reaches out to the audience; it creates a world that is interesting enough to make viewers want to engage with it, to come along on the journey. This applies to movies regardless of genre: “Black Panther” did it this year, as did “Game Night” and “Crazy Rich Asians.”

“The Girl in the Spider’s Web” doesn’t do anything with its audience; it just comes at them like a bullet-riddled BMW driven by someone who’s asleep at the wheel.

Most of the events in this fact-based drama take place at a sexuality-reform school.

Yet the crux of the story is the possibility of a son’s (Lucas Hedges) reconciliation with his mom and dad (Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe). It’s finely crafted, yet short on surprises, either narrative or emotional. Like the conversion program it depicts, “Boy Erased” is unlikely to change any minds. Stealing hearts and minds FILM REVIEW You must be thinking, “Bah! Humbug!” Can a Christmas movie that’s being released in November, well before Thanksgiving, be any good? It just so happens that the new animated version of the Dr. Seuss classic “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” is a welcome, if early, Christmas gift. You’d have to be a Scrooge to resist it.

The Grinch (voice of Benedict Cumberbatch) lives in a spacious mountaintop lair, high above the town of Whoville, with his faithful mutt, Max. When we meet him, five days before Christmas, he’s bitter and alone, a grumpy fur ball who just doesn’t feel the holiday spirit. What’s worse, he doesn’t want anybody else to feel it. Yet no matter what mischief he throws at the Whovillians — everything from refusing to accept their cheery wishes to knocking over their groceries — they take it in stride.

When the Grinch learns that the Mayor of Whoville (Angela Lansbury) has decreed that this year’s Christmas celebration be three times bigger than ever before, he lays plans for a major disruption.

He’s not the only one anxious about the holiday. Little Cindy Lou Who (Cameron Seely) has an urgent wish for Santa. But this wide-eyed tyke doesn’t want toys.

There’s a decent chance the Grinch will begin the movie grumpy before eventually coming around, but who knows?

Working from a script by Michael LeSieur and Tommy Swerdlow, directors Yarrow Cheney and Scott Mosier stay close to the tone of the 1966 TV special based on Dr. Seuss’ book, even as they take liberties with backstory and character development. The Grinch’s aversion to holiday crowds, for instance, serves an unusual purpose here: helping you identify with the villain. That may be unexpected for a children’s movie, but what adult — or at least the introverted ones — hasn’t felt apprehension about the sometimes overly

Such empathy for the Grinch is, ironically, very much in the Christmas spirit. Like Cindy Lou, can’t we feel a little generosity of heart, even to those who wish us harm?

With its charming character animation and inventive art direction, “The Grinch” is a vast improvement over Ron Howard’s

live-action adaptation of the same story. That garish 2000 film, which starred Jim Carrey as the Grinch, looked like a cat that ate German Expressionism, the paintings of Thomas Kinkade and the Target holiday aisle, and then threw up a 110-minute hairball.

Compared with that travesty, this new “Grinch” is “Citizen Kane.” (In fact, the movie subtly references Orson Welles’ 1941 masterpiece.) This endearing update of a holiday classic reminds us that the Christmas season can be hard for the lonely. It offers up an optimistic message that the Grinches of the world might melt their hard hearts if we meet them face to face — not with rancor, but with love.

TMZ reported Thursday that they hired a private judge and submitted documentation to an L.A. County Superior Court judge last week. Affleck and Garner first announced their split in June 2015 after 10 years of marriage.
