Oil Pipeline Route in Neb. Stalls Government delays Keystone approval to study other routes
The Obama administration said Thursday it is delaying approval of a massive oil pipeline until it can study new potential routes that avoid environmentally sensitive areas of Nebraska, an action that likely puts off a decision until after the 2012 election. The announcement by the State Department means Calgary-based TransCanada Corp. will have to figure out a way to move the proposed Keystone XL pipeline around the Nebraska Sandhills region and Ogallala aquifer, which supplies water to eight states. The State Department said it will require an environmental review of the new section, which is expected to take at least a year. TransCanada has said a delay in approval could cost it millions of dollars and keep thousands of people from getting jobs. President Obama said the

1,700-mile pipeline is likely to affect the health and safety of the American people and the environment. “We should take the time to ensure that all questions are properly addressed and all the potential impacts are properly understood,” Obama said in a statement. T he dec ision on whet her to approve the $7 billion pipeline “should be guided by an open, transparent process that is informed by the best available science and the voices of the American people,” Obama said. The heavily contested project has become a political trap for Obama, who risks angering environmental supporters if he approves the pipeline and could face criticism from labor and business groups for thwarting job creation if he rejects it. The project has become a focal point for environmental groups, which say it would bring “dirty oil” that requires huge amounts of energy to extract. They also worry that the pipeline could cause an ecological disaster if a spill occurred. MAT THEW DALY (AP)

Panetta: Review Dover Discipline Further MWi^_d]jed Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Thursday that harsh criticism of the Air Force’s investigation of lost body parts at its Dover military mortuary has prompted him to order the Air Force to consider imposing stronger punishment on those responsible. “None of us will be satisfied until we have proven to the families of our fallen heroes that we have taken every step possible to protect the honor and dignity that their loved ones richly deserve,” Panetta said at a Pentagon news conference. In revealing Tuesday that it had found “gross mismanagement” at the Dover, Del., facility, where small body parts of U.S. troops killed in
8WYaijeho Earlier this week, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta announced an independent review of how procedures have been improved at the Air Force’s Dover Mortuary. In its 60-day investigation, the Air Force confirmed allegations by three Dover whistle-blowers that pieces of body parts from the remains of U.S. troops killed in Afghanistan were lost on two occasions — in April 2009 and July 2009. It also said that in January 2010, a protruding arm bone of a dead Marine was sawed off in order to fit his remains into his uniform for viewing by his family. The family was not asked for permission to remove the bone and was not informed afterward. (AP)
Afghanistan were lost on two occasions, the Air Force said it took disciplinary action — but did not fire — three senior supervisors there. Gen. Norton Schwartz, the Air Force chief of staff, told a congres-

ing a unit at Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., and will not get any future commands. Two civilian supervisors at Dover — Trevor Dean and Quinton Keel — took a cut in pay and were moved to non-supervisory jobs at Dover. They still work there. Panetta said he told Air Force Secretary Michael Donley to examine whether those disciplinary actions were “appropriate,” and to report back. Donley issued a statement after Panetta’s news conference, promising an “exceedingly thorough and rigorous” review of the disciplinary actions. “The lapses in our standards at Dover, which we sincerely regret, are our responsibility to fix,” Donley said. The 24-year-old player, who had just finished his rookie season, was outside the front door at his home in the town of Santa Ines on Wednesday night when an SUV approached, armed men got out “and they took him away,” said Ramos’ agent,

Perry’s mental block offers a glimpse into how the brain does and doesn’t work MWi^_d]jed
Rick Perry’s brain freeze on Wednesday was compounded by previous debate performances in which the Texas governor has been panned, leading to a perception by some that he is not up to being the GOP nominee.
C_jj Hecd[o Mitt Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, filmed a TV ad in Iowa on Thursday, and he blasted President Obama’s Iran policy in a Wall Street Journal opinion piece. His supporters quietly reveled in the good fortune of Rick Perry’s and Herman Cain’s woes.
It was the Great Wall of China of mental blocks. Rick Perry called it a “brain freeze.” Pundits referred to it as a “gaffe.” In Internet parlance, it was an “epic FAIL.” But what apparently happened to the Texas governor Wednesday night was something that neuroscientists say is very ordinary, and exacerbated by stress: a “retrieval failure.” They happen more often as we age. But they shouldn’t necessarily be seen as a sign of an intellectual deficit or some medical problem, the brain scientists say. Instead, Perry’s debate disaster offers a glimpse into how the brain does and doesn’t work, not just in the skulls of presidential candidates but for everyone else, too.

ÇJ^_i W_dÊj W ZWo \eh gk_jj_d] dej^_d]$È — RICK PERRY, WHO SAID WEDNESDAY’S
At the crucial moment, onstage, live on national television, Perry hit a mental block as he tried to remember the name of one of the federal agencies he would like to abolish. He then found himself entangled with unhelpful thoughts, suggested David Diamond, a behavioral neuroscientist at the University of South Florida. In a stressful moment like this, the mind turns to the consequences of the error, making an elegant recovery all the harder. “Even though Rick Perry’s life was not being threatened, his brain was responding as if there was a lion in the audience about to pounce on him,” Diamond said. It was unclear Thursday whether
PAUL SANCYA/AP
BRAIN FREEZE WOULD NOT END HIS CAMPAIGN.
Facing voters for the first time since sexual harassment allegations emerged, Herman Cain met with tea party groups in Michigan, hoping to preserve the lofty perch he enjoyed in GOP polls two weeks ago. “How you beat Obama? Beat him with a Cain!” he told one supporter.
8WYaijeho For the better part of a minute during the GOP debate in Michigan on Wednesday, Rick Perry tried to come up with a word: “energy.” It was the third word in a list of three federal agencies he says he’d close if elected president. But although he named Commerce and Education, he couldn’t quite snag that third word from wherever it was hiding in his brain. He pointed at his own head and laughed. Another candidate suggested that he was thinking of the Environmental Protection Agency, and Perry momentarily seized on that before acknowledging that was wrong. At last, Perry gave up. “I can’t. The third one, I can’t. Sorry. Oops.” It would be the “oops” heard ’round the political world. (T WP)
D[mj =_d]h_Y^ A rejuvenated Newt Gingrich is scheduled to attend a reception Friday in Manchester, N.H., to celebrate the opening of his New Hampshire headquarters. He’ll do the same Saturday in South Carolina. (AP)
Perry’s candidacy could survive his blunder. But among brain scientists, he’s getting a pass. “I think it’s unfortunate that it happened in a situation of such high visibility. Brain freeze. Brain fart. Whatever you want to call it, they happen, and happen at times of high anxiety in particular,” said Jason Brandt, a professor of psychiatry and neurology at Johns Hopkins University. Diamond said the structure of the brain is partly to blame for a retrieval error. Language centers are not particularly close to memory centers — it’s like New Jersey trying to communicate with China. Diamond said retrieval failures often involve new information. In Perry’s case, he’s been governor of Texas for more than a decade but has been running for president for only a few months. And, yes, it’s getting worse for all of us, he said — not just because some of us are getting into the more advanced age brackets, where the brain literally shrinks and the rust metaphorically builds up, but because we’re all increasingly saturated with information. “We are doing so much now, we’re multitasking perhaps at a higher degree than ever before,” Diamond said. “We get into work, and we’re handling emails, we’re going to all the websites, we’re processing more information now than ever before. We’re asking more of our brains than evolution ever prepared us to handle. So every now and then, we just drop the ball.” JOEL ACHENBACH (THE WASHINGTON POST )
EXWcWÊi 8hW_d <h[[p[ During a May 2008 campaign stop in Beaverton, Ore., then-candidate Barack Obama said he had spent the past 15 months visiting every corner of the U.S. “I’ve now been in 50 — seven states? I think one left to go. Alaska and Hawaii, I was not allowed to go, even though I really wanted to visit, but my staff would not justify it.” News accounts at the time chalked it up to fatigue during an exhausting stretch of campaign travel. Beea Kf Dem The blog ARLnow posted a video Tuesday of a cyclist tooling down the Custis Trail in Arlington while playing with the Rock ’Em Sock ’Em Robots in his basket. My first thought: “Awesome.” My second: “That’s probably a good way to hurt something other than a retro plastic toy.” Many of the commenters took an even harsher view, especially considering how common it is for even attentive bike riders to get into accidents. We can all probably agree that distracted driving is bad. But what about distracted not-driving? The video was shot from a bike on a trail with no sign of other people around. But you don’t have to be behind the wheel of a car to do damage if you’re not paying attention during your commute. You don’t even need to be in traffic. My friend Aimee is convinced that a Metro rider engrossed in a cell phone game
is bound to step off the edge of a station platform any day now. W hat worries me more is that the rider could be me (if you substitute reading “A Clash of Kings” on my iPad for playing Angry Birds). Once I mocked the masses of people with earbuds in and eyes fixed on tiny screens, completely disconnected from the world around them. I have yet to see any stats about the public hazards of wandering around oblivious, and I’d guess that the most common consequence of this behavior is an increase in tripping, which doesn’t seem so dire. But how are you supposed to “see something, say something,” as the Department of Homeland Security implores, if you’re staring at text messages? Last year, a man who died from natural causes while riding Metro remained on the train for nearly five hours before anyone noticed. You’ve got to figure that someone taking a good look around would have realized something wasn’t right. There’s a time for fiddling with your phone — and Rock ’Em Sock ’Em Robots. But it’s not all the time. Besides, your thoughts probably miss you.

Paid for by local residents, it is the only District memorial on the Mall, although it is now cared for by the National Park Service. The $3.6 million restoration came after the memorial had crumbled into disrepair over the years. But through the efforts of, among others, D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, the World War I Memorial Foundation and the Trust for the National Mall, money for repairs was made available through federal stimulus funding. Bob Vogel, superintendent of the National Mall and Memorial Parks, said: “It’s absolutely wonderful.” Michael E. Ruane

WR Leonard Hankerson returns to Miami to play in front of friends and family, and hopes to catch a pass longer than six yards.
John Beck returns to Miami as the starting quarterback of the Redskins this weekend.
Dolphins game offers Beck a shot at revenge and his first NFL victory J^[ H[Zia_di In 2007, the Miami Dolphins selected BYU’s John Beck with the 40th pick in the NFL draft — a spot that would suggest the team wasn’t merely taking a flier on an obscure player but aggressively pursuing a potential franchise quarterback. Five years and just seven career starts later, Beck is in Washington and still in search of his first NFL win while desperate to prove to his critics — who are growing in number by the week — that
he is more than just a journeyman signal-caller. So when he lines up Sunday against the Dolphins, redemption might prove doubly sweet, although you will be hard-pressed to get any bulletin board material out of Beck.

“I did play there when I first came into the league, but other than that, there’s no feelings,” Beck said. “I was just a guy there.” Now, he’s the guy for a Redskins team in a steep decline — a large por-

Last week, against the 49ers, the pigskin was a hot potato in his hands. Beck simply has not looked comfortable in his three starts with the Redskins, a fact that must change if the team wants to move forward. “There are so many things we need to get better at,” Beck said. “I’m trying to do my job so I can get better every day so that I can help this team improve.” The Redskins have put up a unified front in support of Beck, although some mild cracks in the façade began to show after last week’s game, when

receiver Jabar Gaffney lobbed some mild criticisms toward the quarterback. Redskins coach Mike Shanahan remains firm in his support of Beck, even as the calls to bring back Rex Grossman grow louder. “I like what John did from one week to the other,” Shanahan said. “Was it a perfect game? No, not by anybody, but we’ll keep working to get better.” The stars have aligned for Beck to earn win No. 1, but can a player who has a 58 percent career completion rate and a 2-to-1 interception-to-touchdown ratio take advantage? “You want to step up to the plate. You want to win games,” Beck said. “I think in this league week in and week out, you see it: the desire to win, the feel for the need to win a game. It’s always there.” ELLIOT T SMITH

A New Day Arrives at Penn State Community begins to process Paterno’s sudden downfall 9ebb[][ <eejXWbb
MATT ROURKE/AP
The Penn State community awoke Thursday to gray skies, wallto-wall coverage of Wednesday night’s extraordinary events on almost every television channel and 72-point, all-caps, single-word headlines — “GONE,” read the Centre Daily Times; “FIRED,” screamed the Daily Collegian — on the front pages of the local newspapers. On the first day of the post-Joe Paterno era — a day after the Nittany Lions’ iconic head football coach was fired by the school’s Board of Trustees in the wake of a child sex-abuse scandal involving one of Paterno’s

Wednesday after Paterno’s dismissal, touching off a riot that saw lamp posts torn down, a television-news truck overturned, and rocks and bottles thrown at police, who responded at one point with pepper spray.
Ostensibly, the students were protesting the firing of Paterno, the 84-year-old face of the storied football program — which on Saturday will host No. 19 Nebraska in what will be the 12th-ranked Nittany Lions’ first game without Paterno on the coaching staff since 1949. He had been the head coach since 1966, amassing an NCAA-record 409 victories and two national titles. New coach Tom Bradley said he is replacing Paterno with “very mixed emotions.” The 55-year-old found out he was the new coach while watching game film Wednesday. He called Paterno about 11 p.m., but didn’t discuss their conversation. “We’re obviously in a very unprecedented situation,” Bradley said Thursday. “It’s with ... heavy hearts that we go through this.”

Paterno, the Face Of College Football When people looked at Joe Paterno, they used to see what they thought was the best of college football. Paterno, fired Wednesday as Penn State’s coach after 46 years, didn’t do much to dispel his image either — coming up with the “success with honor” slogan that now haunts the program. In this scenario, Paterno can rightly be compared to the pope. He’s not accused of 8o CWjj abusing children — his Im[died former defensive coordinator, Jerry Sandusky, is — but his failure to act is infuriating to discuss. And students’ riots backing the coach Wednesday night illustrate the blind faith the coach garnered.
J^[ iWZ \WYj _i j^Wj j^[ iWc[ j^_d] mekbZ ^Wff[d Wj ceij iY^eebi$ Capping off the complete fall from grace was Paterno’s exit strategy. He wanted to coach for the rest of the season — to go out on his terms — though he didn’t deserve to. In the end, the apparent cover-up by Paterno and the many university officials who have also been brought down by this scandal was about trying to protect a football program worth millions of dollars. The sad fact is that the same thing would happen at most schools with such a prestigious sports team. We’ve known for some time that the NCAA, with its hypocrisy and easy money grabs, is morally corrupt. Paterno and Penn State were supposed to be the exception to the rule. By not resigning effective immediately, Paterno put his legacy and football team above all else. In the end, he was an all-too-appropriate face of college football. Capitals Face a Devil of a Challenge J^[ 9Wf_jWbi The thought of back-to-back games might seem grueling to some players, but Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin said this weekend’s two games against the New Jersey Devils might be just the challenge his team needs. “We have to have a wake-up call for everybody,” he said. “These last two games we didn’t play well at all.” On Friday night, the Capitals start their second back-to-back set of the season against the Devils in New Jersey. They’ll return to Washington for part two on Saturday. The games give the Capitals a
chance to reboot after their rough outing Tuesday night. After the 5-2 loss to the Dallas Stars, the Capitals held a “punishment practice” on Wednesday and were eager Thursday to put the game behind them.

The stadium will loom larger, the lights will shine brighter, and the eyes fixed upon the players will be more numerous than the team has come to expect. But for the Maryland Terrapins, who play Notre Dame on Saturday night at FedEx Field on national television, the stakes will be next to nil. Last week’s Senior Day loss to Virginia dropped the Terps’ record to 2-7 (1-5 ACC) and ripped away any hope, however slim and farfetched, of a late run toward bowl eligibility and a season beyond the 12 quarters they must dutifully complete to put behind them a season of frustration and angst. In the summer, when optimism was high for a team coming off a nine-win season and energized by the possibilities suggested by a new

coaching staff, this game stood out. It mattered not in the conference standings but in the opportunity to score a victory over the Fighting Irish (6-3), a national brand flecked with mythology. “That was definitely one of the games you looked at when the schedule came out,” linebacker
Darin Drakeford said. “That was going to be a big game for us.” What’s left is an opportunity to save face. Maryland has lost five consecutive games and hasn’t beaten a Football Bowl Subdivision team since the season opener on Labor Day. In recent weeks, coach Randy Edsall has faced down swarms of
The records are what they are, but you’re not going to out-weird Maryland on the uniform front. Early this week, Notre Dame said that its simple, traditional gold helmets will be topped with a large green shamrock and a leprechaun decal will be on the back. reporters seeking explanation for the struggles and for the whispers of discontent stemming from his authoritarian leadership. “When we are installing a program, there is more than just wins and losses,” he said. “I feel that it is the total program that we are installing that needs to develop. We are improving in a lot of areas. We just aren’t winning on the field right now. That will happen. I am confident in that.” DEREK TURNER
flat the next. The Capitals have shown an ability to play consecutive games and take away at least a point from the set. Last season, the Capitals went 14-9-3 in back-to-back games. You’ve reached heartthrob status in the classical world. Does that affect your performances? Well, thank you for that [laughs]. But it really doesn’t change anything. I’m happy some people think I’m attractive, you know. But I’m a musician, so I just try to ignore it and focus on music. I’m just happy to share the music onstage.

Gautier Capucon CELLIST, FRENCH HEARTTHROB, TIGER DAD Francophiles can add classical musicians to their list of superior French things. Cellist Gautier Capucon, 30, will perform with the National Symphony Orchestra Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. at Kennedy Center. Considered a young superstar of classical music, he chatted about travel, children and his strapping good looks — which we’re pretty sure made him blush a bit. You started playing cello at age 5. Why did you pick it up? I played the violin for one month, which I don’t remember, but apparently I hated it. My sister already played piano and my brother played violin, and they thought, “Let’s give him a cello,” so that’s how it started. But I loved it, even at 5. I was already feeling this instrument as almost a part of my body.
What is your favorite piece to perform? It’s hard to choose. I really love the Saint Saens concerto that I’m going to play with the National Symphony Orchestra. It’s romantic, and it has a whole range of feeling. But there are so many great pieces to play. I like to say that one life is not enough for a musician. You perform all over the world. Do you get tired from the travel? Yes, I do still get tired from the jet lag, so it’s really important to keep my energy up. Even if I only have an hour to sleep or rest, just saving the energy for a concert is important to my performance. It affects my practicing, too. I practiced eight hours a day for 10 years, but with travel and my family now, there’s not as much time for it.
ÇJ^[h[ Wh[ ie cWdo ]h[Wj f_[Y[i je fbWo$ ? b_a[ je iWo j^Wj ed[ b_\[ _i `kij dej [dek]^ \eh W cki_Y_Wd$È And have you been to D.C. before? Do you like Washington? Yes, I played the first time with the National Symphony in 2007, but I didn’t get much time to explore. I saw Georgetown and the monuments. The last time I was in Washington, I played in the Library of Congress, so I like visiting, and I’m happy to be back and see more. Do you have a favorite concert hall to perform in? There’s so many incredible halls all over the world, but the Musikverein in Vienna [Austria] is probably the most incredible hall I’ve ever seen. The atmosphere is so special. You have a 2-year-old daughter. At what age will she start playing cello? Well, actually, you will laugh, but she’s already taking lessons. She has a small cello and small violin, so I don’t know what she will choose, but she is already familiar with instruments. You’re starting her young! At least, she’ll have a good teacher. No, not me! I won’t be teaching her. K ATHERINE BOYLE (E XPRESS)

Thanks to the modern medicine, and the superior makeup technology, the women of today generally look much younger than did the ladies of the previous generations. Indeed, the Manolo had just recently seen the 1971 Geritol advertisement, which showed the group of prematurely aged 46-year-old women. Sadly, it was all gray hair, wrinkly faces and bags under the eyes, as nearly all of the women looked at least the full decade older then their actual age. But what else could be expected if one became middle-aged in the society that regarded liquid iron supplements and smoking cigarettes as sensible parts of any beauty regimen? Of the course, it goes without the saying that in the 40 years time, the future peoples will be mocking us for looking prematurely old, and following strange advice such as injecting botulism into our foreheads to eliminate the wrinkles. Here is the Case from Kate Spade New York ($350, Zappos.com), the sexy but appropriate sandal to wear to your birthday party. Ask the Manolo a question at manolo@shoeblogs.com. Lars von Trier vividly imagines the end of the world in the dark and bold ‘Melancholia’ <_bc H[l_[m
A masterwork of grandeur, millennial angst and high romantic style, “Melancholia” takes themes that have marked the best films of 2011 and spins them into a blast of cosmic sparkle dust. Starting with its stunning overture set to a Wagnerian score of foreboding minor chords, “Melancholia” begins in earnest with the late arrival of a bride and groom to their wedding party; navigating a winding country road in a long limousine, they’re soon boxed in,

I have long held the opinion that director Lars von Trier loves movies and hates people. His films — the newest of which, “Melancholia,” opens Friday — are almost universally depressing. In the literal sense. As in, you feel like something is pressing down on your chest when you leave the theater. “Melancholia” is the story of what 8o Ah_ij[d happens when Earth FW][#A_hXo is destroyed by a giant, encroaching planet. That’s not a spoiler — you know it’s going to happen in the first five minutes of the film. Let me repeat that: This is a movie in which the disaster is not avoided in the last minutes. There is no hero. There is no savior. Everybody and everything dies. You know, just like in real life. Wheee! But, oh, what a good-looking film. The opening sequence proves that von Trier is a modern master of

the medium. There are images — a saddled horse slowly collapsing; a mother (Charlotte Gainsbourg) holding her son, wading knee-high through earth gone soft — that will be indelibly burned into the memory of anyone who sees the film. Yes, the plot is ridiculous at times, the characters are all exactly the same level of insufferable, and no one explains why Kirsten Dunst is the only one in her family with an American accent. But there are single shots in this film that reach the heights of what movies can do — and that, end of the world or no, is exhilarating. Like the nuptials in “Rachel Getting Married,” the “Melancholia” wedding seems to go on and on, with Justine’s skepticism finally taking a shockingly subversive turn; in the movie’s next chapter, the filmmaker takes an even harder metaphysical turn as a planet called Melancholia heads straight toward Earth. While Claire and John react with panic and control-freak calm, respectively, Justine welcomes the coming apocalypse, presumably serving as the alter ego for von Trier, whose most recent depression resulted in the brutally inhumane “Antichrist.” As von Trier’s ultimate wishfulfillment fantasy, “Melancholia” is a broodingly downbeat self-portrait but also the inspiring work of an artist of seemingly boundless imaginative power. In the first category are films starring Sandler, but that are not necessarily produced by him (or, rather, by his company). In the latter category, there’s “Little Nicky,” “Grown Ups,” and now “Jack and Jill,” a lowbrow drag comedy in which Sandler plays both Jack, a successful, attractive L.A.

It is what it is — and, more importantly, exactly what Happy Madison fans want it to be: something unruly, stupid and sort of funny, in the same way — and to exactly the same extent — that passing gas is funny. Why it took three writers — Steve Koren, Robert Smigel and Ben Zook — to come up with the story, in which a Thanksgiving visit by Jill turns into an eight-week nightmare for Jack, is anyone’s guess. In the interest of full disclosure, I should probably admit something up front. I have never been a fan of the furry, red and adenoidal mop-top whose reputation for speaking in the third person — “Elmo loves you!” — suggests that “Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey” could be an 85-minute version of “Nightmare on Sesame Street.” To my surprise, it was not. That’s entirely thanks to the man behind this particular Muppet, Kevin Clash, the Maryland-born-and-bred puppeteer about whom this sweet if lightweight documentary was made. Or not so much as to steal the spotlight from Clash and his inspiring rise from neighborhood puppeteer in Baltimore County to high-powered “Sesame Street” producer. Narrated by Whoopi Goldberg, the film follows Clash from his earliest attempts at homemade puppetry — including a monkey stitched from the lining of his father’s winter coat — through stints on Baltimore TV and “Captain Kangaroo” and on to his current position as Muppet Captain. The film is filled with so much insider Muppet lore that, at times, it strains even the goodwill that Clash generates. Admittedly, there are some cool scenes, such as the archival footage in which an 18-year-old Clash is shown meeting legendary Muppet designer Kermit Love, who shows him drawer after drawer of Muppet eyeballs. FbWo_d] ANONYMOUS (PG-13, 130 minutes) In this alternately entertaining and wildly hamhanded speculative romp, director Roland Emmerich and screenwriter John Orloff advance the notion that William Shakespeare was a fraud and that Edward de Vere, Earl of Oxford, actually wrote those famous plays and poems, his Puritan upbringing and noble station preventing him from dabbling publicly in such ink-stained enterprises. But what first promises to be an intriguing if loony divertissement eventually succumbs to outrageousness for its own sake. Don’t let the frilly costumes, courtly language and historical pretense fool you: “Anonymous” is still a Roland Emmerich movie — a blessing when it comes to vigor and a curse when it comes to subtlety, proportion or sense. A .H. THE BIG YEAR (PG, 90 minutes) Jack Black plays Brad Harris, a 30ish underachiever; Steve Martin is Stu Preissler, a wealthy retired tycoon; and Owen Wilson plays Kenny Bostick, whose most recent Big Year — when birders try to see as many rare species as they can — racked up a record 732 sightings. When Brad and Stu make a run at Kenny’s record, the game of “The Big Year” is afoot. Somehow, the comic chemistry never seems to ignite. Quiet, genial and mild-mannered to a fault, “The Big Year” has the virtue of being deeply un-cynical, but at the expense of propulsive vigor, structural elegance and behavior that’s recognizably human.
“The Big Year” has heart and sweetness to spare — but as any birder will tell you, focus and energy count, too. A .H. DOLPHIN TALE (PG, 113 minutes) Winter the dolphin was 3 months old when crab nets entangled her off the shores of Florida’s Gulf coastline. Marine biologists rescued Winter and nursed her back to health, but not before they had to surgically remove her badly damaged tail. The operation that saved Winter’s life actually created fresh problems. By running Winter’s unique biography through the conventional Hollywood filter, Smith reduces “Dolphin Tale” to “Old Yeller” with a blowhole. Morgan Freeman appears on screen as Dr. McCarthy, an engineer of prosthetic limbs who custom-designs an artificial tail for Winter. The real star, of course, is Winter, who plays herself and rightfully steals every scene. SEAN O’CONNELL . FOOTLOOSE (PG-13, 113 minutes) Director Craig Brewer has delivered a largely unobjectionable note-for-note facsimile of Herbert Ross’ ode to teenage rebellion, young love and the unfettered joy of movement. The movie opens with an exuberant but also sobering preamble that explains why the Southern town of Bomont has instituted a curfew and banned public dancing and loud music. That law is proposed by the Rev. Shaw Moore. When the streetwise Ren McCormack blows into Bomont, he immediately bristles at the strictures. He’s also drawn to Moore’s daughter, Ariel. “Footloose” never needed to be dragged into the 21st century, but Brewer has made it look and sound a little bit more like the real world. A.H. LIKE CRAZY (PG-13, 88 minutes) The exhilaration of first love and the pain of its denouement burst forth with aching tenderness in “Like Crazy.” Felicity Jones and Anton Yelchin play Anna and Jacob, who meet when they’re college students and fall in love after Anna boldly leaves a note on Jacob’s windshield. “Like Crazy” then sends viewers along for the ecstatic ride as Anna and Jacob discover that they’re soul mates, with director Drake Doremus telling the story as a collection of vagrant moments of connection and intimacy. “Like Crazy” gives filmgoers an over-the-shoulder view of a relationship at just about every stage of its morphology, conveying the vicarious pleasure and pain of love and separation through characters eminently worth rooting for. A.H. MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE (R, 101 minutes) Elizabeth Olsen delivers an utterly transfixing turn as the title character of this chilling psychological thriller, in which a young woman named Martha joins a cult and is rechristened “Marcy May” by the group’s dangerously charismatic leader. Structured mostly in flashbacks while Martha seeks to reunite with her estranged sister Lucy,
this is a story that’s about a cult only in the most superficial sense. As Olsen’s alternately recessive, spontaneous, blunt and vulnerable turn suggests, it’s about a woman forging an identity in spite of the familial and pseudo-familial forces that never cease to exert their own destructive pulls. Just how Martha’s reunion will play out with Lucy takes on the contours of a horror film in “Martha Marcy May Marlene,” which, true to its arthouse spirit, offers no easy answers. A.H. PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3 (R, 81 minutes) Expanding on the intentionally vague original, the sequels spin a diabolical (if quite silly) mythos around two California sisters who attract poltergeists. We meet the two women in 2005 yet to experience the frights moviegoers have already witnessed. The siblings have just found a box of VHS videotapes from their childhood, and the rest of the movie pretends to be that footage. Back in 1988, Katie and the younger Kristi live with their divorced mom, Julie, and her boyfriend, Dennis. Strange things start happening, which might be the fault of Kristi’s imaginary friend. The underemployed Dennis just happens to be a wedding videographer, so he has the gear to set up cameras all over the house. The first movie’s home-video premise provided a sense of everyday reality to balance the story’s essential
preposterousness. “Paranormal Activity 3” just uses new technology to deliver the same old ghosts-and-goblins hokum. MARK JENKINS
PUSS IN BOOTS (PG, 90 minutes) The feature-length animated spin-off — a star turn for the popular “Shrek” supporting character voiced by Antonio Banderas — is almost shockingly good. The character is still something of a delusional

Fairey-inspired graphics, suggests that “The Ides of March” will offer fresh, of-the-moment commentary on postObama political culture. But viewers looking for penetrating insight will come away sorely disappointed. Granted, director and star George Clooney elicits terrific performances from his players, gamely letting Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ryan Gosling and Paul Giamatti take the lion’s share of the film’s most toothsome dialogue. Indeed, “The Ides of March” is so well directed and acted that it’s easy to overlook how dated and shallow it is. Rather than probe the system it abhors, “The Ides of March” is content simply to reassure the audience that it’s still rotting from within. A .H. IN TIME (PG-13, 110 minutes) Set in a dystopian future in which time is, quite literally, money, “In Time” engages with philosophy and politics in a way that few action movies do. In filmmaker Andrew Niccol’s invented universe, everyone has been genetically engineered to stop aging at 25. You’re given a year to live at that point, which will go up if you work hard. Here, the price of everything is measured by a clock, not a checkbook. As in the real world, there are the haves and the have-nots. The action is set in motion when Will comes into a lot of extra time. But Will gets more than a

who is, naturally, Puss’ love interest. M.O. THE RUM DIARY (R, 120 minutes) As a posthumous valentine to his old friend Hunter S. Thompson, Johnny Depp’s adaptation of “The Rum Diary” exudes a
cheery, beery sense of warmth and affection. Brimming with Thompson’s alcoholdrenched antics, observational wit and gift for the acidly apposite phrase, “The Rum Diary” also suffers from a creakily episodic structure and a fatally underwritten, flimsily acted supporting role. As the movie opens, Thompson’s alter ego, Paul Kemp, has just come to San Juan to work at a teetering English-language
newspaper. Urged to write anodyne puff pieces on the local tourist scene, Kemp instead turns in biting portraits of American cultural colonialists. There’s a sweetness in considering Thompson on the verge of creating his own myth, before it locked him into self-indulgent mannerisms. A.H. THE THING (R, 102 minutes) Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.’s “The Thing” acts as
a prequel to John Carpenter’s 1982 cult classic, which itself drew from the 1951 thriller. All three plant their roots in John W. Campbell’s 1938 science-fiction novella. This latest film largely mirrors its predecessors, with a shape-shifting alien terrorizing researchers in an isolated Antarctic base. Because van Heijningen attempts to answer questions raised by Carpenter’s version, it’s difficult to speak

[dj[hjW_dc[dj beeaekj of one without referencing the other. Van Heijningen trades methodically established tensions for cheap, easy horror jolts. Screenwriter Eric Heisserer misses multiple opportunities to expand on the mythology of the stranded alien creature. And the bridge scenes meant to connect van Heijningen’s ending to Carpenter’s beginning are forced, at best. S.O. THE THREE MUSKETEERS (PG-13, 110 minutes) A rare PG-13 film that feels more like PG, the 20th or so cinematic adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’ 1844 novel may amuse kids who can bear movies set way back in the 17th century. Young d’Artagnan travels to Paris to join the king’s musketeers, only to find dashing Athos, brawny
sions Josh invested with Shaw disappear like the dregs of last night’s single malt, the game is afoot. As enjoyable as the individual performances are, they don’t always emulsify into a smoothly integrated whole. But that matters little in a movie that derives most of its cachet from how uncannily it chimes with the times. The “Tower Heist” heroes often seem lifted directly from the Central
Casting handbook, their antics preposterous enough to beggar belief, but they arrive at just the right moment. They’re the 99 percent. A.H. A VERY HAROLD AND KUMAR 3D CHRISTMAS (R, 90 minutes) There’s so much on-screen drug use that you get a kind of contact high just from watching this film. It’s a decent but not amazing buzz. Puss in Boots (voiced by Antonio Banderas) gets his own adventure in a spinoff of the popular “Shrek” series. Porthos and devout Aramis in grumpy retirement. Conniving Cardinal Richelieu dominates callow King Louis XIII, and the rogue’s private guard has supplanted the loyal musketeers. To consolidate his power, Richelieu intends to cause a war with England by persuading Louis that his queen is having an affair with the Duke of Buckingham. Thanks to a videogame approach to space and movement, neither the battles nor the buildings look genuine. This “Three Musketeers” packs all the chivalry, heroism and camaraderie of Wii Fencing. M.J. TOWER HEIST (PG-13, 105 minutes) Ben Stiller plays Josh Kovacs, the general manager of the Tower, a posh apartment complex. Overseeing a motley staff, Josh proudly caters to every passing whim of his elite clientele, the richest of whom is penthouse dweller Arthur Shaw. He appears genial, but when the staff pen-

protagonists — former roommates and BFFs Harold (John Cho) and Kumar (Kal Penn) — the two have gone their separate ways. Harold, whose friends now call him “Harry,” is a married banker living in the suburbs. Kumar, having been thrown out of medical school, is still living in the pair’s dumpy old apartment. Through a complex chain of events, the two find themselves again thrown together in a
series of silly misadventures, this time revolving around the search for a Christmas tree. The subplot has to do with estranged friends reconciling and growing up — but not too much. The laughs are, for the most part, as lowbrow as they come. M.O. REVIEWS BY THE WASHINGTON POST’S ANN HORNADAY AND MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN. Because someone has to combat the image of a “gamer” being a teenage boy with no friends who rarely leaves his room, the DCGam.es Festival is emphasizing the social aspect of game playing, with liveaction play and digital technology overlapping in a series of specially designed games that will take place all over the Artisphere complex. established Muslim communities in the nation. Even there it seems as though marginalization and assimilation are constant forces with which these families reckon. Compared with typical reality fare, “All-American Muslim” is fairly straightforward and careful. In fact, most of the show’s stars seem to have been cast for their exemplary civic and cultural pride. In the Jaafar family, for example,
husband and father Mike is a deputy sheriff; wife and mother Angela is a consultant. They juggle a busy life raising four young kids. Within five minutes of meeting them, you want to be them. “A ll-A merican Muslim” is informative, occasionally engaging and almost adorable, but that’s not what we’ve come to think of as a reality show. “I thought about buying corduroy for everyone in the family, but I am too cheap [and] thrifty to do so. My husband would never wear it again. I’ve been mulling over food to serve for this day. Twizzlers, of course, come to mind, but they don’t make a very good main course. I guess I could make a Shepherd’s Pie and comb the mashed potatoes on top into thin lines. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time.
