A Maine animal control officer had been on a mission to find a loose chicken in Augusta when he decided to whack a few branches, exposing a black fowl lurking below. The Kennebec Journal reported Paul Frye on Thursday solicited the help of another officer and two citizens to wrangle the bird, saying it took four people to not “look stupid doing it.” The bird was captured and is being cared for. Police say it had been roaming the area for weeks. (AP)

Police in Shoshone, Idaho, managed to wrangle a turkey that had been “terrorizing” a local neighborhood, the department wrote Wednesday on Facebook. Police directed the turkey’s owner to call Southern Idaho Regional Communications to get it back. “You must say ‘gobble gobble’ when they answer the phone,” the department wrote, clearly not taking the threat of terrifying turkeys with appropriate seriousness. ‘Queen of the Corporate Jungle’ dies at age 89

EVELYN HOCKSTEIN (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

RELIGION On Saturday, standing inside his Hindu temple in suburban Maryland for a joyous celebration of Diwali, Mayur Thaker was reminded of a tragic attack. In 2002, two gunmen killed dozens of people at a temple in India’s Gujarat state, the home his parents had left for America years before. At the time, Thaker was 17, and he couldn’t understand why so many people had been targeted. On Saturday, Thaker reflected on that attack and the more recent attempted political bombings in the United States and deadly synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh. He recalled what the leader of his order of Hinduism, His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj, did in that terrible moment amid India’s religious strife. He prayed for the victims. And he prayed for the attackers. “I was shocked and inspired at the same time,” said Thaker, who now works as a stock market analyst, “because such a response would only come from someone

who has no ego and truly has humility inside of him.” Thaker and thousands of others gathered at the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, a Hindu temple in Beltsville, Md., to celebrate Diwali and the Hindu new year. It was an alternately exuberant and pensive look at the year ahead. Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, signifies a celebration of good over evil and the victory of light over darkness. As Thaker sees it, it’s a “time to

celebrate unity in diversity, and to look inward and be the change we wish to see in the world.” Singing in unison, the celebrants joined before a staggering display of more than a thousand homemade dishes, from lentils and cupcakes to chapatis and orange-and-fuchsia sweets. The towering spread, climbing up cloth-covered altar steps, is meant to signify a year’s worth of food, given first to God, then made available for all to share, said Thaker’s wife, Bijal.

“That’s what it looks like to me — offering a lot of love,” she said. It was also the temple’s 20th birthday party. The former suburban office building has been transformed over the years with intricate columns and decorative flourishes outside. With the echoes of mass shootings not far away, said temple coordinator Bharat Patel, “a message of love and peace and nonviolence, that’s what we need the most right now.” MICHAEL LARIS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Despite not winning governor’s seat, state Dems still celebrating MARYLAND Maryland Democrats again lost the state’s top political prize, and yet they’re ecstatic. For the second time in four years, Republican Larry Hogan captured the governor’s mansion, winning by 13.5 percentage points and with a record 1.2 million votes in a state that has twice as many Democrats as Republicans. But Democratic leaders are celebrating. They’re thrilled by down-ballot wins that they believe cleared the Republican bench of rising GOP stars who could succeed Hogan in 2022.

NOT SO SALTY

“We could have not had a better night,” said Democratic strategist Martha McKenna, citing gains in the legislature, county councils and the biggest county executive races in the state. “I’m hearing no hand-wringing. … Everything got better, not worse.” Party leaders have largely rationalized Hogan’s resounding victory over former NAACP chief Ben Jealous as an anomaly, according to interviews with more than a dozen prominent Democrats and strategists. They attribute his win to the power of incumbency and the governor’s personality, and the fact that Jealous was a first-time candidate with few resources, a small political base and, some say, a progressive message that

Democrats everywhere else were celebrating wins.” Democratic leaders, who did little to embrace Jealous after the primary, quickly distanced themselves from the Democratic nominee after his loss. “His message might have played better in California than it did in Maryland,” said Senate President Thomas V. Uncertainty at the border

weekendd re win GEORGIA

Amid political minefield, the Army prepares for a caravan of migrants

CALLA KESSLER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

DONNA BASE CAMP, TEXAS With a pair of bulldozers rumbling in front of him through muddy terrain, Staff Sgt. Kevin Barr observed as the austere beginnings of an Army headquarters camp at the southern border slowly came together Saturday. After a night of rain and temperatures plummeting below 50 degrees, the open field they were living in — land provided by U.S. Customs and Border Protection — had turned into a gusty, mucky mess. “If we can get some gravel, we can potentially start graveling some of the areas and try to put a road here,” Barr said. “Because this clay dirt is pretty thick.” The raw weather was the latest surprise for soldiers in a mission whose wheels shifted into motion amid President Trump’s election-season warnings that an “invasion” of migrants — many of them women and children — was heading north for the United States. The deployment has been panned by critics as a politically motivated stunt to rally Trump’s base for the midterm elections. Less than a week later, the Pentagon stripped the operation of its name — Faithful Patriot — amid complaints that it was overtly political. Images of soldiers stretching out concertina wire at the border just before Election Day had just surfaced.

Kemp urges Abrams to concede in close race

A group of soldiers play cards in their tent at the military base camp in Donna, Texas, on Saturday.

Public attention has shifted away from the mission in recent days as the president has focused on other issues. But the military’s lumbering deployment from San Diego to Brownsville, Texas, has continued despite questions about its necessity. The caravan is still hundreds of miles from the border, and it set out this week instead for Tijuana, some 1,500 miles to the west. The mission is expected to extend through Dec. 15, keeping soldiers away from their families for much of the holiday season. About 5,600 service members had been dispatched as of Friday, according to the Pentagon. About 2,800 are in Texas, including more than 1,000 in Task Force Griffin, an Army unit that set down temporary roots in the Rio

Grande Valley and has a corps of leaders from the 89th Military Police Brigade of Fort Hood, Texas. Col. Richard Ball, the task force commander, sought in a news conference Friday at a border point in Hidalgo, Texas, to stress that the U.S. military will not have a law enforcement role in the operation. That is considered a sticking point because of the Posse Comitatus Act, which restricts active-duty troops from participating in such activities in most cases. U.S. troops are expected to have “very little to incidental contact” with migrants, he said, and will take the direction of CBP officials if it occurs. Inside a large tent being used as living quarters at the camp in Donna, Texas, on Saturday, more than 100 soldiers could be

seen relaxing, some reading, others playing video games on their phones, still others tossing around a football, and one attempting to solve a Rubik’s Cube. Hundreds of cots were spread out at least 18 across, over a space larger than a hockey rink. Capt. Tim Smith, commander of the 977th Military Police Company of Fort Riley, Kan., said he and his soldiers arrived at Donna on Friday on buses from Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, more than 240 miles away. The unit received a few days of training there, learning basic phrases in Spanish and how to use Google Translate, he said. “Potentially we’re going somewhere else in the future, but right now, we don’t know,” he said. The fire ‘we have feared’

California’s Camp Fire kills 23, becoming the state’s deadliest wildfire since 1991

THOUSAND OAKS, CALIF. Already the most destructive wildfire in California history, the Camp Fire in the Sierra Nevada foothills has become the state’s third-deadliest — killing 23 people in three days, with more than 100 people unaccounted for in a swath of land larger than Detroit. Although the fire had been 25 percent contained by Sunday, high temperatures and gusty winds made the weather optimal for the Northern California fire to spread for at least another day. As of Saturday, the Camp Fire had destroyed nearly 7,000 structures in and around the mountain town of Paradise and had been blamed for most of the last week’s fire deaths. The wildfire is the deadliest in the state since 1991. In Southern California, two people were found dead in fires burning outside Los Angeles. “This event was the worst-case scenario,” Butte County Sheriff Kory L. Honea said, referring to the Camp Fire. “It’s the event that we have feared for a long time.” Honea, who is also the county coroner, said he’d had to add a fifth search and recovery team to help find bodies. Authorities have not released the names of victims and have continued to search for more. His office has also ordered an additional DNA lab truck and received help from anthropologists at California State University at Chico for a time-consuming and daunting task. In some cases, investigators have found only pieces of bone. The smoke, like orange fog, that enveloped Chico and surrounding towns Friday gave way to a lowlying haze that spread all the way up to Redding over the weekend, thanks to a shift in winds. As the fire moved on, displaced residents were allowed to return to whatever was left of their homes, in

some cases finding only ash and charred foundations. Gov. Jerry Brown, D, requested a presidential major disaster declaration, which would make the hardest-hit communities eligible for housing, unemployment and other support programs and allow state and

local governments to repair or replace fire-damaged facilities and infrastructure. FEMA has already granted a state request for emergency aid. President Trump has alternated between offering sympathy for displaced people and firefighters, and lashing out at

California’s leaders over what he deemed poor forest management. “With proper Forest Management, we can stop the devastation constantly going on in California. Get Smart!” he tweeted Sunday morning. Officials shot back that increasingly destructive fires are a result of global warming, which dries out vegetation and turns large swaths of grassland into tinderboxes. A spokesman for Brown said that more federal forest land has burned than state land, adding that the state has expanded its forestry budget while the Trump administration has cut its budget for forest services. Brian K. Rice, president of the California Professional Firefighters association, chided Trump, calling his words “illinformed, ill-timed and demeaning to those who are suffering as well as the men and women on the front lines.” CLEVE R. WOOTSON JR. AND JOEL ACHENBACH (THE WASHINGTON POST)

POLITICS President Trump knows Matthew Whitaker, White House counselor Kellyanne Conway said Sunday, two days after the president told reporters he did not know the acting attorney general. “The president does know Matt Whitaker, has gotten to know him over the course of the last year, since he has been the chief of staff to the attorney general,” Conway said on “Fox News Sunday.” Trump last week forced Jeff Sessions to resign as attorney general and chose Whitaker, who was then Sessions’ chief of staff, to serve as his interim replacement. In the days since, Whitaker’s background and previous critical statements about the Russia investigation led by special counsel Robert Mueller have come under scrutiny, with Democrats and some Republicans calling for him to recuse himself. Trump on Friday repeatedly claimed that he did not personally know Whitaker, telling reporters, “I don’t know Whitaker.” That contradicted his statement last month in a Fox News interview, during which the president said, “I know Matt Whitaker.” Conway said that Trump was trying to make the point that in selecting Whitaker, he wasn’t appointing “a friend.” She added that it wasn’t clear whether Whitaker had been briefed on the Mueller probe because Sessions had recused himself. Ex-Obama officials: End U.S. role in Yemen Thirty former Obama administration officials have drafted a letter acknowledging their responsibility for initiating U.S. involvement in Yemen’s destructive civil war and calling for the Trump administration to halt America’s role in the conflict. The letter comes two days after the Pentagon said it would end one of the principal elements of U.S. support for the Gulf-led coalition: aerial refueling of flights over Yemen. (TWP)

PARIS In the shadow of a grand war memorial in Paris, French President Emmanuel Macron marked the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I by delivering a forceful rebuke against rising nationalism, calling it a “betrayal of patriotism” and warning against “old demons coming back to wreak chaos and death.” His words during a solemn Armistice Day ceremony under overcast skies at the foot of the Arc de Triomphe in the heart of the French capital were intended for a global audience. But they also represented a pointed rebuke to President Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin and others among the more than 60 world leaders in attendance. Speaking in French, Macron emphasized that a global order based on liberal values is worth defending against those who have sought to disrupt that system. The millions of soldiers who died in the Great War fought to defend the “universal values” of France, he said, and to reject the “selfishness of nations only looking after their own interests. Because patriotism is exactly the opposite of nationalism.” Macron has attempted to stand as a vocal counterweight to Trump, who recently called himself a “nationalist” and has moved to set the United States apart from global treaties, including the Iran nuclear deal, the

Amid growing divisions in Europe that have strained the European Union, Macron defended that institution and the United Nations, declaring that the “spirit of cooperation” has “defended the common good of the world.” “By putting our own interests first, with no regard for others, we erase the very thing that a nation holds dearest, and the thing that keeps it alive: its moral values,” Macron said. He denounced fringe ideologies that have become more mainstream, warping religious beliefs and setting loose extremist forces on a “sinister course once again that could undermine

Trump misses event President Trump canceled a planned visit to a cemetery for Americans killed in World War I, the White House said, citing bad weather that grounded his helicopter. honoring those who served and died. Among those who participated were German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Putin told Russia’s RT network after the ceremony that he and Trump spoke during a leaders’ luncheon, but a formal meeting would wait until they cross paths at the Group of 20 Summit in Argentina later this month. Putin said he and Trump agreed to a request from French officials not to overshadow the war remembrance ceremony. Trump did not address Macron’s speech. Egyptian tombs held animal, beetle mummies

Archaeologists have discovered seven Pharaonic Age tombs at Saqqara near the Egyptian capital of Cairo, containing dozens of cat mummies along with wooden statues depicting other animals and birds. A top Egyptian antiquities official said the discovery includes mummified scarab beetles, the first ever found in the area. nation+world Workers begin tallying ballots in critical races for governor, Senate FLORIDA Election workers were recounting ballots Sunday in Florida’s bitterly close races for the U.S. Senate and governor, ramping up their efforts after the secretary of state ordered a review of the two nationally watched contests. The Florida secretary of state ordered the recounts Saturday, an unprecedented step for the two flagship races in a state

that took five weeks to decide the 2000 presidential election. Florida’s counties can decide when to begin their recounts, but must complete them by 3 p.m. Thursday. Elections officials in two large counties in the Tampa Bay area — Pinellas and Hillsborough — began recounts Sunday morning. Unofficial results show that Republican former U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis led Democratic Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum by less than 0.5 percentage points, which will require a machine recount of ballots. In the Senate

Redskins corner Josh Norman picks off Ryan Fitzpatrick in the Bucs’ opening drive Sunday.

Back to the grind REDSKINS 16, BUCS 3 Washington yielded 501 yards and forced Tampa Bay to punt once all day. Sounds like a blueprint for a lopsided loss, yet there the Redskins were in the visiting locker room Sunday celebrating a 16-3 victory that kept them alone atop the NFC East. That’s what four takeaways, three of them foiling scoring opportunities, will do for a team that struggles to score points. “We gave up some yards. They had great time of possession and some great drives, but we were able to keep them out of the end zone,” coach Jay Gruden said. “You’ve got to keep playing until the drives are over, and good things will happen. We did that.” Alex Smith threw for 178 yards and one touchdown, while Dustin Hopkins kicked three field goals for the Redskins (6-3), who improved their turnover differential to plus-11 and rebounded from a 38-14 loss to Atlanta

despite playing with a makeshift offensive line because of mounting injuries. “I promise you this: If we were even or minus-11, we wouldn’t be 6-3,” Gruden said. “It’s been the difference so far. It’s why we are where we are.” Smith, who was 19 of 27 with no interceptions, threw 6 yards to Josh Doctson for the game’s only touchdown early in the

fourth quarter. Hopkins kicked field goals of 43, 43 and 26 yards, the last set up by Greg Stroman’s fourthquarter interception and 24-yard return to the Bucs’ 14. “You can [give up] 1,000 yards, but if you get the ‘W,’ three points, it really doesn’t matter,” Washington cornerback Josh Norman said. “It goes down in the stat sheet, but the only stat

that matters is the ‘W.’ ” Ryan Fitzpatrick threw for 406 yards for Tampa Bay (3-6), but was intercepted twice and lost a fumble on a sack inside the Washington 10. The Bucs, who have the NFL’s top passing attack and are second in total offense, fell to 1-3 in games they’ve gained 500-plus yards this season. The Bucs moved into Redskins’ territory on all five of their first-half possessions, outgaining Washington 279 yards to 136 in the first two quarters. Yet the Redskins led 6-3 at halftime. With the Bucs driving in the second half, Jacquizz Rodgers fumbled on a reception that rolled 18 yards into the Washington end zone, where it was recovered by safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix for a touchback. “Four-zero in turnover margin is going to kill you every time,” Bucs coach Dirk Koetter said. “We had a lot of chances. … We weren’t good enough today, and that’s plain to see.” FRED GOODALL (AP)

THE TAKEAWAY

Decimated offensive line comes up big This wasn’t exactly the toughest test for the Redskins’ makeshift offensive line, which had three starters out with injuries Sunday. The Bucs entered the game ranked 15th in run defense and 30th in pass defense. There were only six teams in the league that had fewer sacks. But the Bucs’ defensive shortcomings shouldn’t minimize the impressive showing from Washington’s line. While Adrian Peterson, above, struggled to get going early, he and Kapri Bibbs had some strong second-half runs and the Redskins finished with 116 yards on the ground. QB Alex Smith was sacked only twice and was given a ton of time to find Josh Doctson in the back of the end zone on a third-and-6 to give the Redskins a 13-3 lead in the fourth quarter. This was a promising sign that a rash of injuries might not derail playoff hopes. JEFFREY TOMIK (EXPRESS)

SCHOOL NEWS

Going out of state, but not off campus EDUCATION For more than a dozen years, Michael M. Crow, president of Arizona State University, has been on a mission to transform his school into a new kind of university, one that offers access to the broadest demographic possible and takes a new approach to higher education. A slew of changes and additions on the main Tempe campus have helped carry out that goal. So Crow started looking beyond Arizona’s borders. “We said, ‘Where is the greatest concentration of people from around the planet?’ ” he says. “And it turns out that’s Washington, D.C. Everybody’s in Washington, D.C.” Now Arizona State University has established a major D.C. presence as well, with the March opening of its Ambassador Barbara Barrett & Justice Sandra Day O’Connor Washington Center (named after two prominent Arizona women). “We said to ourselves that we needed to build a transactional idea center in Washington, D.C., and begin the process of engaging in new ideas, new solutions, new ways to solve problems, new ways to teach and new ways to learn,” says Crow. The new center provides access for ASU students, faculty and staff to the broad range of

entities based in the nation’s capital, including the federal government, organizations like the World Bank, major foundations and all kinds of nonprofits and associations. It helps the school forge partnerships and contribute to major issues facing the world today. The Barrett & O’Connor Washington Center expands on a smaller D.C. outpost ASU established a few years ago. The renovated 32,000-square-foot, eight-story building on I Street NW includes classroom space and a news bureau for ASU’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication and serves as a home base for ASU programs including the McCain Institute for International Leadership and the Center on the Future of War. Several types of students are already taking advantage of the center. One is current ASU undergraduate and graduate students who come to D.C. for internships or as part of the degree program they’re enrolled in. ASU’s law school, for example, offers opportunities in D.C. for students interested in getting legal experience with federal agencies or nonprofits. Lillian Donahue, 21, a senior in the Cronkite School at ASU, is in the middle of a semester in D.C., where she’s reported on topics important to Arizona, like immigration and Native American issues. “My time in D.C. is critical to my career because

it’s made me almost fearless,” she says. “What 21-year-old is able to run down her state senator? The experience of being a reporter in the nation’s capital has thickened my skin. I’m running around with the big boys.” But local folks who aren’t currently ASU students can also benefit from the school’s D.C. facility. ASU is launching a new executive master’s of public administration jointly administered by the McCain Institute that will be a hybrid program of in-person courses in D.C. and Arizona plus online courses. The Academy for Innovative Higher Education Leadership, a partnership between ASU and Georgetown

University, also provides leadership training programs for professionals working in higher education. The Barrett & O’Connor Washington Center also offers meeting space and resources like its Decision Theater, where federal agencies, nonprofits and other D.C.-area thought leaders are meant to gather to discuss issues like climate change and national security. “We’re neutral ground,” says Crow. “We are a place where you can come and freely express your ideas. And in Washington we want to be at the table advancing ideas.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 16

A new program will give 50 Richmond students full academic scholarships to Virginia Union University. The Richmond TimesDispatch reported that the university in Richmond is partnering with the city’s school system. The application process will open in January for eighthgraders, with criteria still being determined. Richmond Public Schools Superintendent Jason Kamras says it will be “life-changing” to tell the winning students that their future college education is taken care of. According to the Times-Dispatch, the 50 scholarships equal about 3 percent of the eighth-grade class in the city’s public schools. The partnership will allow the district access to university labs and classrooms, and mentorships are being developed. The university will also gain access to the district’s Arthur Ashe Center for athletics and events. (AP)

Arizona State University isn’t the only school based outside the D.C. area to have established a presence here. Plenty of colleges and universities, including Cornell University, the University of Texas and Worcester Polytechnic Institute, have programs and facilities in the D.C. area to provide their own students with internship and other learning opportunities. About 1,000 students from the University of California’s nine campuses come to the University of California’s Washington Center every year to intern in the city and take classes. “Our student body is incredibly diverse, so we like to think that we are diversifying the internship force

in D.C. and providing some California input into offices around the city,” says Marc Sandalow, associate academic director of the UCDC program. While the University of California doesn’t offer any educational programming in D.C. for non-UC students, its Washington Center does host lectures and networking events attended by UC alums in the D.C. area. “They use it almost like a California embassy in D.C.,” says Sandalow. The University of Oklahoma has maintained a location Arlinton’s Crystal City for nearly two decades. It’s part of the university’s extended campus program, which began in the 1960s with a focus on serving military members. That made the D.C. area a natural fit for a location. Today, OU offers master’s

classes are taught by OU professors who come to Arlington to teach. “The curriculum that’s taught is the same as what’s taught on the main campus,” says Lauren

Eichinger, assistant director for OU Extended Campus North America. “It’s just condensed for working adults.” In establishing a presence in the D.C. area, what all of these universities have in common is a desire to provide their students and staff with access to ideas, to the federal government and to organizations tackling complex global issues. “We don’t believe in the notion that universities are great because you exclude the majority of people who apply,” says ASU’s Crow. “New kinds of universities need to emerge. Our student body is representative of the socioeconomic diversity of our country. So we’re literally going to the seat of democracy with a much more democratic university.” BETH LUBERECKI (FOR EXPRESS)

Position: Radio host and producer Salary: Starting at $30,000

What she does One day while interning at a radio station in Baltimore in the early 2000s, Poet Taylor said something funny to the radio host, who then asked her to repeat the comment on air. After the program ended, Taylor got a call from her boss asking to see her. “I remember thinking, ‘Am I really going to get fired from an internship?’ says Taylor, a Detroit native who’s also known by the alias Just Curious Poe. Instead, her boss told her she’d be live on air the next day, and that he wanted her to re-create the same banter he’d heard earlier. Today, Taylor employs her quick wit and natural gift of gab as the host and producer of “Midday Shenanigans, a talk and music show that airs 10 a.m.-3 p.m. weekdays on WPGC 95.5 FM. In addition to playing music and overseeing the content of the show, Taylor — who has a larger-than-life personality and infectious enthusiasm — shares the top local and entertainment news of the day. Taylor’s day starts around 6:30 a.m. and involves identifying the top news stories and writing a loose script. Topics may include delays on Metro, or details on a new fashion line from Cardi B. Taylor makes sure the content is never boring and always positive. “At any given time there are a lot of ears listening to me — that’s a lot of power, she says. “I don’t want to sit on the air and talk trash. I choose to be positive, because it may be the only

positive thing you hear all day. Taylor, who grew up in foster care, refers to her listeners as the “village to signify that those who tune in are part of a larger community. “We’re more alike than different, and we’re all better because of that, she says. “The village works because we share stories and insight. And everyone matters, even the man who picks up my trash. What would happen if he didn’t come to work for three days? When she’s not on the air, Taylor uses her voice as a community organizer and frequent volunteer. “[When you’re a media personality] you become a role model whether you want to or not, she says. “I’m trying to give you amazing music and teach you things along the way.

“At any given time there are a lot of ears listening to me — that’s a lot of power, says radio host Poet Taylor.

How she got the job Taylor earned that first fateful internship in Baltimore after winning a contest, with no prior radio experience. “One of my friends at the time was like, ‘You have a lisp and are kind of chunky,’ which made me want to try out even more, she says. “If you have a genuine talent why not go for it? The internship propelled Taylor into jobs in other forms of media, including writing and television. But she’s always been drawn to radio specifically due to its authentic nature. “Radio allows me to pop this mic on and instantly I’m feeding you info, she says. “[In television] I had eight people chopping my story down. It wasn’t my narrative. In radio I can speak directly to my village. CONTINUED ON PAGE 18

Along the way, Poet weathered a number of layoffs and slogged through late-night shifts, all while teaching herself how to use sound editing software and working in the medical profession to make ends meet. A little over a year ago, she got a call to come host “Midday Shenanigans,” which she’s hoping will one day be syndicated nationally. “I am a walking testimony of what a GED and using the internet for good will get you,” Taylor says. “There is more than going to TMZ. I would look things up online and let YouTube show me how programs worked.” Taylor also credits her success to a number of mentors and advisers who taught her the value of

hard work. “Success only comes before work in the dictionary,” she says. “I worked, worked, worked before I got to go to the concerts and meet the stars.”

Who would want this job Because radio is fast-paced and unpredictable, you have to be able to multi-task. (During a phone interview for this story, Taylor paused the conversation to tell a caller than they’d won tickets to an A$AP Rocky concert.) Additionally, you have to be able to remain positive despite horrible breaking news or bad days, says Taylor, who adds that she always tries to be the light in a tunnel. “I’ve had to get on the air and talk about school shootings,” she says. “I have to be able to deliver that kind of news.”

Poet Taylor covers topics including celebrities and local news on her show.

And, Taylor says, you should pursue this career because you love it — not because you’ll make a ton of money (which she says is very unlikely) or because you want to rub elbows with

celebrities. “See how you feel when you’re putting up a tent in the rain [for an event] or have to help clean the Anacostia River,” she says. “It’s not always as glamorous as you think.”

Though she’s self-taught, Taylor is a big proponent of going to broadcasting school. And volunteering for low or no pay at a local radio station is a wise idea if you’re able to. “The point is to learn,” Taylor says. “You might try something and legit find out you don’t like it. ... [Or] you may kick ass and take names in a department you never thought existed.” If you find success in the field, be prepared for everyone to feel like they know you — which isn’t always a bad thing. “Your life becomes everybody’s business,” Taylor says. “Sometimes people slide into my DMs with secrets. To me there’s no better proof of the impact of what I do than that people trust me.” HOLLEY SIMMONS (FOR EXPRESS)

It’s not just you — Chris Pine also seems confused as to why he’s in a movie about 14th-century Scotland.

MUST-SEE THIS WEEK

1 CMA Awards 8 p.m. Wednesday on ABC

A bloody awful mess Chris Pine’s ‘Outlaw King’ is overlong, needlessly violent and sapped of all emotion

FILM REVIEW Set in early 14th-century Scotland, “Outlaw King” could be described as a spinoff of “Braveheart,” the stirring historical epic about Scottish rebel William Wallace that cleaned up at the 1996 Oscars. It could be described that way because the character of Wallace, who is in hiding when “Outlaw King” begins, makes a brief appearance in the new film, which began streaming Friday on Netflix. This movie tells the story of Wallace’s contemporary, Robert the Bruce, played by Chris Pine beneath a salt-and-pepper beard and an unflattering mullet. Technically, only a part of Wallace shows up here, after he has been captured by the English

and drawn and quartered for his disloyalty to the crown. It’s one arm and part of his chest, a grisly warning of more violence to come in this bloody — and bloody awful — historical epic that reunites Pine with “Hell or High Water” director David Mackenzie. This slog through the highland muck should win no Oscars, only groans and raspberries. Even the much-buzzed-about glimpse of a nude Pine doesn’t make this worth watching. Robert picks up the mantle of rebellion against the English monarch King Edward I (Stephen Dillane) and his cruel son (Billy Howle). Reacting to oppressive taxation, the forced conscription of young Scottish men and the imprisonment of his young

‘Outlaw King’ (R, 121 min.) DIRECTOR: David Mackenzie STARS: Chris Pine, Aaron Taylor-

Johnson, Florence Pugh, Billy Howle IN A NUTSHELL: In 14th-century Scotland, newly crowned king Robert the Bruce leads a historic uprising against English rule.

bride (a fiery Florence Pugh), Robert takes up arms against England as he slowly recruits other Scottish noblemen to the cause of guerrilla warfare. The film culminates in the 1307 Battle of Loudoun Hill, which was a turning point in the struggle for Scottish independence. The overlong, overly violent and chaotic

scene delivers another form of liberation: ours, from a movie that is a predictable, monotonous and badly written mess. The screenplay is ponderous and literal, like color commentary from a “Monday Night Football” personality who’s been transferred from the sports desk to medieval warfare. It’s almost refreshing when the wife of a Scottish rebel greets her husband, upon his return from the resistance, with this anachronisticsounding greeting: “Where the f--- have you been?” If nothing else, the question is good for an unexpected laugh, which is more than can be said for the rest of this otherwise emotion-free saga. This miniseries from director Ben Stiller tells the true story of a New York prison worker (Patricia Arquette) who aided the escape of two convicted murderers (Benicio del Toro and Paul Dano).

The domestic box office take of “The Grinch,” which sledded past mixed reviews to finish No. 1 this past weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday. Last week’s top film, the Freddie Mercury biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody,” dropped to second with a $30.9 million weekend. “Overlord” was third in its first weekend with $10.1 million, while “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” brought in $9.6 million in its second weekend. “The Girl in the Spider’s Web” opened with just $8 million, finishing fifth. I had never watched “90 Day Fiance” because it seemed sad and voyeuristic — an American meets a nonAmerican, sometimes online, sometimes in the real world. A relationship is born. Due to visa rules, an engaged couple has 90 days to wed or the foreignborn partner must go home. Raves have been flying for

the show’s sixth season, which premiered last month. Vulture says the MacArthur Foundation should recognize the series for “its strides in genius television programming.” So at 8 p.m. on a Sunday with nothing better to do, I tuned in. All I can say is: “Genius” is an understatement. The show is a brilliant meditation on the nature of love, its illusions and delusions. What makes someone fall for the unlikeliest of

Then there’s Fernanda, a 19-year-old from Mexico, lamenting that she found a thong in the apartment of 32-year-old fiance Jonathan. “It makes me feel stupid,” she says. His defense: “That stuff is old.” Could literary laureate Joyce Carol Oates have cooked up better dialogue and plotlines? I think not! The full spectacle of human emotion is on raw display. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You may be more fatigued today than usual; have you been getting the rest you need? This is something you cannot afford to ignore.

FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You can lend an important insight to others who are dealing with a difficult situation. You’ve been there before.

TODAY: Clouds are expected to be on the increase throughout the day as a storm system starts to gear up across the deep south. The rain should hold off for most of the day, though, as highs manage to get to the upper 40s to low 50s. Showers could move in from the southwest by late afternoon, with steadier rain not too far behind.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) You’ll benefit from another’s mistakes today, but you must take care that you don’t gloat in any way — or expect this to happen again. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You may have to wait for a remedy to take effect. Once it does, you can move forward — and you mustn’t repeat any mistakes.

Rowling is suing former assistant Amanda Donaldson for more than $31,000, claiming the employee misused a business credit card and stole Harry Potter memorabilia, according to The Scottish Sun. The unauthorized purchases reportedly include more than $1,500 to acquire two cats. Donaldson, who worked for Rowling from 2014 to 2017, has denied the accusations.

Viggo Mortensen has apologized for using a racial slur during a panel last week for his new film, “Green Book.” Mortensen told The Hollywood Reporter he was making the point that many people casually used the slur in 1962, when the movie takes place. The actor added that he had “no right to even imagine the hurt that is caused by hearing the word in any context.” Co-star Mahershala Ali said in a statement that he accepted Mortensen’s apology but noted that “however well-intended or intellectual the conversation may have been, it wasn’t appropriate.” (AP/EXPRESS)
