More than 1,400 people got involved in the fight to keep the Metro K Market open.

But the store is still set to close by the end of the month.

Property manager Joe Borger said another grocer will replace it, but the announcement has done little to soothe agitated patrons. The failed bid to save the shop — one of Adams Morgan’s oldest institutions — emphasized residents’ desire to hold on to something familiar.

Eclectic but reliable, Metro K Market has for 45 years stocked an odd assortment of merchandise that adapts to what customers desire.

One winter about seven years ago, owner Ho Sang Cho said, a customer came in looking for chestnuts. He had never stocked chestnuts before, but he

The lease gave Cho the option to extend another five years, but the landlord wanted to raise the rent by 30 percent. Cho said the landlord also asked that Metro K Market make renovations that would have cost about $150,000.

It was all too much. Now he’s selling what merchandise he has left and plans to shut down by the end of November.

Borger declined to identify the business that will take over the space but said that the market has promised to hire as many of Cho’s employees as possible.

Residents worried that a new store might not fit into the neighborhood in the same way as Metro K Market.

“I don’t like those big-brand stores — I don’t even go to Whole Foods,” James said. “There’s too many people in stores like that who are the kind of people who wouldn’t shop at Metro Market.”

Redskins star to dance in local ‘Nutcracker’ Redskins star cornerback and “Dancing With the Stars” alum Josh Norman will be dancing in a local production of “The Nutcracker” this holiday season, the Loudoun Times-Mirror reported.

Norman will dance the role of the Arabian Prince in the Loudoun Ballet Performing Arts Company’s show on Dec. 14 in Purcellville, Va. Some of the proceeds will benefit Norman’s Starz24 Foundation. “I have tremendous respect for [these dancers’] stamina, strength and commitment,” Norman said in a statement. (EXPRESS)

DMV has new ally in House Democratic takeover of chamber may mean good things for region

REGION Democrats’ takeover of the U.S. House in last week’s election instantly strengthened the D.C. region’s deep-blue congressional delegation, a change that may advance local goals such as Metro funding, statehood for the District and protecting federal workers and the Chesapeake Bay. “It’s the difference between being in the back seat and being the driver,” said Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md. Raskin is one of several Democrats from Maryland and Virginia, together with District Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, D, who are in line for key positions in the House now that they will be in the majority. They will play important roles on committees responsible for investigating the Trump administration and overseeing federal employees, mass transit and the Justice Department.

The newly empowered legislators are already relishing the opportunity to pass legislation that they say will help the region and that has languished with Republicans on top.

But continued GOP control of the Senate and White House means the overall outcome could instead be partisan stalemate, which could in turn act as a brake on the D.C.-area economy, according to Republicans and analysts.

“When we went to divided government back in 2010, look

“There’s going to be uncertainty for two years, and that’s not good for the economy.”

Given a divided Congress, Democrats’ main role may be defensive. Their victory now enables them to block GOP efforts to cut social spending, end the federal Chesapeake Bay cleanup plan and dismantle some local military support operations targeted by Republicans, according to legislators and outside analysts.

“Congress is going to be as divisive as ever but without the ability to literally gut every safety net service that is available to the neighbors around us in need,” Rosie Allen-Herring, chief executive of United Way of the National Capital Area, said.

Rep. Steny H. Hoyer, D-Md., who represents southern Maryland and part of Prince George’s County, is expected to regain his post as House majority leader.

Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., is slated to chair the House Oversight Committee, which

is expected to investigate what Democrats see as Trump administration abuses. He will be joined by four other Democrats from the region — Norton, Raskin, Gerald Connolly from Northern Virginia and John Sarbanes of Maryland.

Connolly said there would be a “sea change” in the House’s approach toward the approximately 350,000 federal employees in the region. That means no more efforts to freeze federal workers’ pay, cut pensions and other benefits, and weaken unions.

“All of the depredations and attacks on federal employees by the Republicans in Congress, even before Trump, get reversed,” Connolly said.

A priority for the regional delegation is extending and increasing federal funding for Metro.

The 10-year-old subsidy program expires next year. It has supplied Metro with $150 million a year for capital investment, matched by $50 million each from the District, Virginia and Maryland.

Norton will have a say in this because she is in line to chair the transportation subcommittee on highways and transit.

“When you see the condition Metro is in, you see the need for 10 more years of capital funding,” Norton said.

Republicans dismissed the House Democrats’ hopes for wholesale changes. Dan Scandling, who was an aide to former congressman Frank R. Wolf, R-Va., said, “The Senate will stop everything dead in its tracks.”

D.C. GRADUATION RATE TAKES A SLIDE

The decrease in the graduation rate for D.C.’s traditional public high schools in 2018 — which marks the first decline since at least 2011 and comes amid heightened scrutiny over whether District students properly earn their diplomas. The rate for the traditional high schools fell to 68.6 percent, although that was not as steep as feared: A citywide investigation found that 1 in 3 graduates in 2017 received their diplomas despite missing too many classes or improperly taking makeup classes. Police: College instructor found killed in his home Baltimore police say a college fitness instructor was found killed inside his apartment in the city’s Midtown. Police said in a statement that officers responding to a suspicious death report had discovered 43-year-old Brendon Michaels dead Thursday afternoon. Police say the medical examiner’s office determined that Michaels was beaten and ruled his death a homicide. Michaels graduated from Carroll Community College in 1998 and was hired the next year as a fitness instructor. Police are still investigating. (AP) VIRGINIA

Va. trooper convicted of falsifying drug records A Virginia State Police trooper has been found guilty of falsifying records for drug case evidence that he had destroyed without permission. The Roanoke Times reports 40-year-old Sgt. Lee Jennings Testerman pleaded not guilty Thursday as part of a deal in which he acknowledged there was enough evidence to convict him. The judge suspended Testerman’s one-year sentence on the condition he avoid future legal trouble. Man accused of killing wife after Marine ball A U.S. Marine is accused of killing his wife following a military ball in Virginia. The Free Lance-Star reports Rodolfo Rivera Valencia, 24, is charged with murder in the Nov. 3 death of Natasha Soto Rivera, 20. She was found dead at an Arlington hotel the morning after the ball. Court records say Soto Rivera also was a Marine, and the recently married couple had an infant child. Police said Soto Rivera had injuries consistent with strangulation and a “brutal” beating. (AP)

nonbinary gender D.C. among first to give third selection when indicating children’s sex THE DISTRICT The District’s public school system is slated to become among the first in the nation to let families select “nonbinary� — rather than male or female — when indicating the gender of their child on enrollment forms.

The option is scheduled to go into effect for the next school year, and school system leaders said it is part of a broader effort to ensure that transgender and nonbinary students feel welcomed in classrooms in the nation’s capital. “We value the whole child at [D.C. Public Schools], and have worked diligently to ensure our schools are safe and inclusive for all students, staff, and families,�

Interim Chancellor Amanda Alexander said in a statement.

The change comes as the Trump administration has made efforts to limit the federal recognition of transgender people, with the Education Department abandoning Obama-era guidelines that directed public schools to accommodate transgender students.

Nonbinary is a term used for people who do not consider their gender identities strictly male or female. It can include transgender people.

The D.C. enrollment forms will allow teachers to know which students in their classroom identify as nonbinary without families having to inform them.

School officials said collecting data on how many students identify as nonbinary will ensure that the school system has enough resources available for those students, including access to gender-neutral bathrooms and extracurricular activities.

Virginia’s 3 new female delegates developed bond on campaign trail VIRGINIA After Election Day, congresswoman-elect Jennifer Wexton sent a message to her soon-tobe colleagues, telling them the back of Virginia’s state seal is inscribed with a word that means “persevering” — and the images of three goddesses.

“Virginia elected three badass women to Congress last night,” she tweeted to Abigail Spanberger and Elaine Luria, who, like her, had flipped congressional districts from red to blue.

The dead were found in burnedout cars, in the smoldering ruins of their homes, or next to their vehicles, apparently overcome by smoke and flames before they could jump in behind the wheel and escape. In some cases, there were only charred fragments of bone, so small that coroner’s investigators used a wire basket to sift and sort them.

At least 29 people were confirmed dead in the wildfire that turned the Northern California town of Paradise and outlying areas into hell on earth, equaling the deadliest blaze in state history, and the search for bodies continued Monday.

Nearly 230 people were unaccounted for by the sheriff’s reckoning, four days after the fire swept over the town of 27,000 and practically wiped it off the map with flames so fierce that authorities brought in a mobile DNA lab and forensic anthropologists to help identify the dead.

Meanwhile, a landowner near where the blaze began, Betsy Ann Cowley, said she got an email from Pacific Gas & Electric Co. the day before the fire last week telling her that crews needed to come onto her property because the utility’s power lines were causing sparks. PG&E had no comment on the email, and state officials said the cause of the inferno was under investigation.

POLITICS Fresh off a resounding midterm elections victory, House Democrats have started detailing plans to wield their newfound oversight power in the next Congress, setting their sights on acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker while rebuffing calls from some liberals to pursue impeachment proceedings against President Trump.

Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., who is poised to take control of the House Judiciary Committee, said he will call Whitaker as a first witness to testify about his “expressed hostility” to special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation. Nadler said he is prepared to subpoena Whitaker if necessary.

Another incoming chairman, Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., of the House Intelligence Committee, raised the possibility of investigating whether Trump used “instruments of state power” in an effort to punish companies associated with news outlets that have reported critically on him, including CNN and The Washington Post.

And Democrats on the House Oversight Committee plan to expand their efforts to investigate Trump’s involvement in payments to women who alleged affairs with him before the 2016 election, a committee aide said Sunday night, potentially

opening up the president’s finances to further scrutiny.

The moves signal that House Democrats, while wary of the risks of alienating voters who backed the president, are fully embracing their midterm victory last week as a mandate to dig deep into the actions of the executive branch.

“The key lesson that we’ve learned from this last election is that the American people are sick and tired of the Trump administration, and they are looking for a Congress that is going to put a check on the executive branch,” said Democratic strategist Zac Petkanas, a former senior aide to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign.

Last week, Trump laid down a marker for congressional Democrats, warning them that any

investigations into his administration would lead him to a “warlike posture” that would threaten the prospects of any bipartisan cooperation.

The pressure among the Democratic base to move against Trump remains strong: A Washington Post-Schar School poll released last week showed that among voters who supported Democratic House candidates in battleground districts, 64 percent believe Congress should begin impeachment proceedings against the president.

But party leaders have urged calm, emphasizing that before any serious talk of impeachment, a host of investigations — including Mueller’s probe into Russian interference in the 2016 campaign — must first be allowed

to bear fruit. They also note that a vote to convict requires a twothirds vote of the Senate, which will remain in Republican hands.

Nadler echoed other top Democrats who say they should hold their fire on the question of impeachment until they know what Mueller has uncovered.

Nadler said his test is whether there’s enough evidence to convince even Trump supporters that such a step is necessary.

“Is the evidence so strong … [that] when all this is laid out publicly, a very large fraction of the people who voted for the president will grudgingly acknowledge to themselves and to others that you had no choice but to impeach the president?”

But the navigator isn’t doing all the work: Here’s what you should know before you head to an appointment at WhitmanWalker or another organization.

The earlier you go, the better Most states, including Maryland and Virginia, have a deadline of Dec. 15 to enroll in health insurance that takes effect on Jan. 1. In D.C., you have an extra month and a half: Enroll by Jan. 31 for coverage that takes effect March 1. But that doesn’t mean you should kick your feet up until after the holidays.

“In all my time doing this work, there’s always a high volume of folks coming in on the very last few days [of open enrollment],” says Nicol. If you’re looking to get an insurance navigator’s assistance, the sooner you go, the better. That way if you have any trouble tracking down documents or need some time to decide between plans, you’re not scrambling at the last minute.

Don’t expect it to be quick An appointment with an insurance navigator isn’t a quick stop.

Nicol says Whitman-Walker sessions last at least 30 to 45 minutes, and for more complicated situations (blended families, preexisting conditions, changes in income, etc.) it could take three to four hours.

Still, talking it out with a trained professional will almost certainly be speedier than figuring it out alone. “I tell my team all the time: If this was easy, we’d be out of a job,” Nicol says.

Do some research To shave some time off your insurance navigation session, do some prep work online.

Nicol says the first question she asks clients is: “Have you been on the DC Health Link site before?” When they have, appointments tend to go quicker, because the site includes plenty of information about specific plans, as well as common rules of the road for insurance selection.

Bring all your documents Dig up all your personal information before you leave your house. Whitman-Walker asks that clients bring proof of identity (driver’s license, state-issued ID, birth certificate, passport or green card); proof of residency (driver’s license or ID card with your current address; current lease or mortgage agreement; utility bill from the past 60 days showing your name and address; or a voter registration card); and proof of income (one month of pay stubs or a statement from your employer stating payment structure; statement of benefits from Social Security, disability or retirement; or one month of unemployment stubs).

That’s just the basics. Depending on your situation, you might need more paperwork, like social security information or citizenship documents.

If you’re enrolling in insurance through your job, bring along all that documentation, too.

Ask some tough questions Choosing insurance requires thinking about your year ahead, which means grappling with some big questions.

“Thinking about their plan selection is thinking through how frequently do they need to see a doctor,” Nicol says. “You just go to the doctor twice a year because you’re pretty healthy, that’s gonna be different from someone who has to go once a month.”

Nicol says folks going through open enrollment tend to appreciate having a navigator to talk out these tricky subjects with. She says she sees clients return year after year for assistance during this season.

“People want the help of assisters and in-person navigators,” she says. “ We’re trusted community members.”

What the ACA is today AFFORDABLE CARE ACT The Affordable Care Act’s sixth sign-up season opened this month amid stabilizing premiums and more choice for consumers.

Nationally, average premiums are going up only by low singledigit percentages for 2019. In some states, and for some types of plans, premiums will decline.

Fewer areas will see increases.

Insurers also are expanding their participation.

Health care ranked among voters’ top concerns ahead of last week’s midterm elections.

A year ago, it wasn’t even clear if former President Barack Obama’s signature program would survive repeated efforts

by President Trump and Republicans to repeal it.

Indeed, there have been changes. It might be more difficult finding help in enrolling, after the Trump administration sharply scaled back funding for sign-up counselors known as “navigators.” Even so, independent community groups still guide consumers through the paperwork.

And in a change that takes effect Jan. 1, those who decide to opt out of health insurance won’t be penalized come tax time.

“God bless Obamacare,” says the self-employed remodeling contractor from Austin, Texas.

The first year he signed up under the ACA, Hewitt fell off a roof he was working on, shattering his left heel and tearing an arm muscle. “It allowed me to get good health insurance to fix my body,” says Hewitt, who’s in his 50s. He believes the coverage has been worth the $290 he pays monthly in premiums.

“When you have it, it keeps you proactive on taking care of yourself,” he says.

About 10 million people have private policies through healthcare.gov and state-run insurance

Obamacare enrollees are entering a slightly different health care landscape this year

markets, with roughly 9 in 10 getting taxpayer-financed help to pay their premiums. An estimated 12 million more are covered through the ACA’s Medicaid expansion, aimed at low-income adults.

The healthcare.gov website and call center are now up and running. Income-based tax credits to help pay premiums remain available. Coverage is available even if you don’t qualify for financial help — but many cannot afford to pay full freight and self-pay customers have left the market in droves.

The 2019 sign-up season began just days before Tuesday’s midterm elections, when Democrats won back control of the House.

Democrats made preserving the ACA’s protections for preexisting medical conditions a major issue in the midterms,

After repeal failed last year, the Trump administration and GOP-led Congress continued to chip away, making changes that could lead to fewer people enrolling. If younger, healthier people stay out of the market, it will increase taxpayers’ cost of covering those who remain.

A new Kaiser Family Foundation study estimates that if not for the changes by Trump and Congress, premiums would have been substantially lower next year. Standard “silver” plans will cost about 16 percent more than they would have otherwise, the analysis found.

But no one is predicting Obamacare will collapse, as Trump repeatedly did last year.

“It will shrink maybe a little bit, but it doesn’t fall off a cliff,” says Standard & Poor’s analyst Deep Banerjee.

About 11.8 million people signed up during last year’s open enrollment, only about 3 percent fewer than the final season under Obama. It was a surprising result, and experts saw it as evidence of the program’s value to consumers.

Although federal funding for sign-up season has been slashed, independent groups are trying to get the message out.

At Foundation Communities, an Austin nonprofit that serves low-income workers, calls and emails have been going out to clients with reminders about open enrollment. Kori Hattemer, director of financial programs, says the goal is to help enroll 5,000 people. The center had the same target for this year and exceeded it.

“There’s a lot of confusion around whether the Affordable Care Act still exists,” says Hattemer. “We’re making sure people know financial help is available. There’s just lots of mixed messages out there.”

The repeal of the unpopular requirement that Americans get health insurance or risk fines takes effect Jan. 1. Experts agree that will reduce enrollment, but they differ by how much.

Some argue that the so-called “individual mandate” was never very effective, since the Obama administration issued numerous exemptions, and the Trump administration added more.

“This is not the death blow for the market that was thought,” says Chris Sloan of the consulting firm Avalere Health.

More short-term plans

Most states will have greater availability of short-term health plans. The Trump administration is allowing such plans to cover up to 364 days, and renewals up to 36 months. Premiums are much lower than for ACA plans, but pre-existing conditions are excluded and plans don’t have to cover basics like prescription drugs. “It’s uncertain how popular these cheaper and more bare-bones plans will be among the healthy people who will qualify for them,” says Larry Levitt of the nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation.

Plans for small businesses

“Association health plans” for small businesses and sole proprietors have been expanded.

The plans can be sold across state lines and are broadly similar to employer insurance. But it takes time to set up provider networks and to gain approval from state regulators, so it’s unclear how widely available they now are.

Make good Medicare choices There are a few changes to Medicare this year. Here’s everything you need to know before you enroll.

1. Most people qualify for “premium-free” Part A by having paid Medicare taxes through payroll deductions for 10 years or more.

For 2019, Part B premiums range from about $136 per person per month to $461 per month, for those earning about $160,000 as an individual or more than $320,000 for a joint tax return.

The cost of Part C Medicare Advantage plans varies by the company offering the plans and benefits covered. One other thing to know: Medicare covers most, but not all, costs. For 2019, the Part A deductible that a patient must cover is $1,364 for each hospital admission during the year.

4. If you’ve enrolled in parts A and B, consider buying Medigap supplemental insurance. Medigap plans, which are offered by private insurers, can help cover the annual deductibles for Part A and Part B, as well as additional costs for extended hospital stays and other excess charges beyond what Medicare pays. About 14 million Americans buy a Medigap plan, according to the American Association for Medicare Supplement Insurance. Medigap coverage can be used at any doctor or hospital accepting Medicare.

HEALTH INSURANCE Each day, about 10,000 baby boomers turn 65, making them eligible to join the 58.5 million Americans already enrolled in the national health insurance program for older Americans.

Medicare now accounts for 15 percent of all federal spending, according to the Congressional Budget Office. Costs are projected to grow nearly 5 percent a year over the next decade, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Medicare Part A, which covers inpatient hospital care, shortterm care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care and some in-home care, will exceed its trust fund in 2026. For that reason, controlling Medicare costs is a big priority. In 2018, new enrollees began paying premiums based on income for Medicare Part B, which covers doctor visits, lab work, outpatient surgeries and preventive care and screenings.

It’s important for Medicare recipients — and anyone approaching age 65 — to begin looking at all the details right now, during Medicare’s open enrollment period, which ends Dec. 7. Here’s what you need to know:

You must sign up for Medicare when you turn 65 through the Social Security Administration, unless you are already drawing Social Security or receiving Railroad Retirement benefits, in which case enrollment may have been done for you. The clock actually starts ticking three months before your 65th birthday and ends three months after the month you were born. Enroll online or by mail, but many experts advise signing up in person at a Social Security office.

Delayed enrollment can result in costly penalties. How much? Up to 10 percent more per year for each year missed.

You could also face a delay in the start of coverage, leaving you with a health insurance gap. One caveat: If you work at a large employer and plan to keep working, you do not have to immediately sign up for Parts B, C or D as long as you can keep an insurance plan through work.

You’ll have eight months after you retire to enroll.

Some changes slated to take effect in 2019: The Part D yearly deductible will increase by $10 to $415 for 2019. The coverage gap called the “doughnut hole” will continue to shrink for brand-name prescription drugs covered by Part D insurance.

That means that you are responsible for drug costs above $3,820 in 2019. You’ll also get a 75 percent “doughnut hole discount” on brandname drugs until your out-of-pocket costs reach the $5,100 yearly limit.

Medigap Plans C and F will not be open for new sign-ups. Both plans will continue operating, but current members will probably see premiums rise as the pool of people sharing costs in these plans shrinks.

Some Medicare Advantage plans will begin offering coverage of lifestyle-support services when prescribed by a health care professional, such as meals delivered at home, installation of bathroom grab bars and transportation to medical appointments.

3. If you’ve been putting money in a Health Savings Account (HSA), you must stop those payments before Medicare or Social Security benefits begin. HSAs are tax-exempt accounts in which people contribute pretax dollars through their work to pay for medical expenses. Internal Revenue Service rules prohibit Medicare recipients from contributing to HSAs. If you continue to do so while on Medicare, you could face stiff tax penalties.

But you can draw down any money left in the HSA after enrolling in Medicare or going on Social Security. Know this, however: Premium-free Part A is backdated to six months before the date you apply for Medicare or Social Security. That means once it is in place, it covers costs from the previous six months.

So the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) advises you to stop contributing to your HSA at least six months before you apply for Medicare to avoid paying tax penalties.

5. Medicare Advantage plans — Medicare Part C — may work better for you than signing up for the various parts of Original Medicare, so learn how they work. More than 20 million Americans annually sign up for these private insurance plans. Because they roll Parts A, B and D into one, and also can provide vision and dental coverage, some people find them easier to use and, depending on the plan chosen, less costly. Advantage plans generally require you to stay within their network of doctors and hospitals to control costs.

6. The cost of drugs can be a big part of health care expenses in retirement. There are many different Part D prescription drug coverage plans. Find one that will match up well with your needs.

Be sure to review the drug list every year during open enrollment period. If a prescription drug you need is dropped from your plan, you can switch without penalty then. You can also set up a personalized drug formulary at cms.gov to compare Part D drug plans.

Repairing bond: Redskins deserve a little more love the hot ticket in town. They haven’t really been for several years. It just took that long for management to admit it.

But it’s time for fans who surrendered their longtime loyalty to return to FedEx Field. If not now — with the team two games ahead of Dallas and Philadelphia in the NFC East — then when?

Otherwise, this will no longer be a Redskins town. For nearly a half century, the football team was often the capital city’s only unifying force.

Norman is a relative newcomer to Washington with just 2½ seasons here. He doesn’t understand why loyalty is no longer blind, and he’s also immune to the team’s newfound marketing efforts.

Norman didn’t endure nearly two decades of awful teams and mismanagement that finally broke the fan base.

He hasn’t endured an 87-85-1 record at the old Big Jack, where too many crowds never returned after halftime to see an ugly defeat concluded.

It used to be easy to excuse poor attendance at Redskins games. Bad seasons and a bad owner had decimated interest: Instead of a waiting list of 200,000 to buy season tickets, there were 30,000 fans in the stands, sometimes outnumbered by the visiting team’s supporters.

But the Redskins are 6-3 for the first time in 10 years.

They’re not always pretty, but they have a pretty good chance to make the playoffs.

Yet cornerback Josh Norman said Sunday after a 16-3 victory in Tampa that he’d rather play on the road. He blamed “keyboard warriors” who too often jeer the team both online and from the stands.

Whether Norman is happy to play at FedEx is irrelevant. He was a high-dollar free agent who came for the money.

What’s important is that the Redskins seize the chance to replace fans’ infatuation with fantasy teams, sports betting and luxury seats with the simple satisfaction of beating an opponent.

Maybe Washingtonians are willing to judge the Redskins once more Sunday — against the 6-3, AFC South-leading Houston Texans — by returning to FedEx. Perhaps players, 3-2 at home this season, will continue to provide a good reason to put up with the high prices and traffic.

Because if the strained relationship can’t be repaired through success on the field,, it won’t ever be fixed.

MLB The Nationals’ Juan Soto finished second Monday night in media voting for National League rookie of the year, beaten by another precocious left fielder, Ronald Acuna Jr. of the Braves.

Acuna won by a wide margin in voting by the Baseball Writers Association of America, receiving 27 of the 30 first-place votes.

Soto got two first-place votes.

Dodgers right-handed starter Walker Buehler (8-5, 2.62 ERA) had one first-place vote and finished third in an exceptionally strong field.

Soto, who turned 20 in October, built his case on all that he accomplished at age 19. He bested Hall of Famer Mel Ott for most walks (79) by a teenager since 1900, and finished with the second-most home runs (22) by a teenager in history, tied with Bryce Harper.

But Soto was ultimately outpaced by the 20-year-old Acuna, who caught fire once the Braves moved him into the leadoff spot in the middle of the season.

Acuna ended up with a slim advantage in home runs with 26; runs scored (78 to 77); hits (127 to 121) and batting average (.293 to .292).

more RBIs (70 to 64), an edge in on-base plus slugging percentage (.932 to .917) and walks (Acuna had 45).

Soto also struck out less frequently (99 to Acuna’s 123) in

seven more plate appearances.

That all helped Soto compile a .406 on-base percentage to Acuna’s .366.

But Acuna was set apart by something, and that was most likely his defense, base-running and role in pushing the upstart Braves into the postseason.

The Nationals didn’t reach the postseason.

Acuna also showed more promise as a left fielder, a spot Soto was still growing accustomed to in 2018. “[Soto] has done things no other teenagers have,� Nationals manager Dave Martinez said in September when asked to predict who might be voted top rookie. “He has been incredible, but it could go either way and baseball is lucky to have both those guys.�

A little bit of jerky goes a long way

Finding your yoga flow Whether you do yoga at the local YMCA, at a trendy fitness studio or with an app on your living room floor, you probably know there are plenty of ways to get into the flow. But figuring out which practice best suits your physical and mental goals can be tough, and a two-sentence description on a class schedule is hardly enough. Over the years, classical forms of yoga have been adapted to be more fitness-focused — and sometimes plain gimmicky. Now there are so many options, it can be difficult to keep up. What makes Bikram different from other hot yogas? How does Anusara compare with hatha? Get the breakdown below. ELIZABETH KIEFER (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

This is the branch of yoga that probably comes to mind when most people think of yoga. It focuses on basic postures, such as downward-facing dog or the warrior poses.

Sometimes the poses are combined into a set or series — for example, sun salutations — with each pose held for several breaths. Breathing is also rhythmic, with inhaling and exhaling as drivers of motion. Hatha is great for beginners and for anyone looking for a good stretch or to work on their alignment. Anusara yoga, which is related to hatha, focuses on sequences that are physically challenging but aimed at opening the heart and mind.

If you’re looking for a practice that will help support you during other styles of yoga, and you’re patient enough to hold poses for longer, then yin might be for you. In these classes, you’ll stay in a posture for several minutes, which helps connective tissue such as tendons, ligaments and fascia become more flexible. Similar to yin is restorative yoga, a slow-paced, meditative style that focuses on stretching by holding poses for up to several minutes, sometimes with supportive props such as blankets and bolsters.

Restorative classes often happen in the evening with the lights turned down.

There are different styles of yoga designed to make you sweat. Bikram is highly regimented: It consists of 26 postures, mostly done twice in a row, in a hot, humid room where temperatures can exceed 100 degrees. The idea is that the heat helps protect your muscles from injury while also allowing you to deepen the poses.

The Bikram series never changes. Hot yoga is derived from Bikram but is flexible in format. It just means the room is warm — typically between 80 and 100 degrees — and might contain any range of postures or particular series. Classes might look different depending on where you’re practicing.

If you’ve ever been to a yoga class where the word “flow” was a major part of the instructor’s vocabulary, it was probably vinyasa.

In this type of yoga, the emphasis is on performing poses that are fluid from one to the next. There is no set series for these classes; teachers might ask practitioners to call out things they want to work on and tailor it to those requests. Mindfulness of breath, and marrying your breath to movement, is a part of this practice, too. Depending on where you’re taking the class and who is teaching it, this form of yoga can feel like a full-on aerobic workout.

Vinyasa requires a fair amount of strength.

Pronounced eye-yen-gar, and developed by the esteemed teacher B.K.S. Iyengar in the 1970s, this practice is regimented, form-focused and propcentric. (Yoga props, or tools that help you modify poses or support your body, include blocks, straps, bolsters and blankets, among other items.) There are hundreds of different sequences, so there is a lot of variety among classes, and it can be practiced by students at all stages. Poses are held for stretches of time and do not flow from one to the next: The goal is to achieve proper alignment, as well as to build strength and balance.

Not long ago, jerky was a shrink-wrapped snack from a gas station. More recently, it has been reinvented as a premium specialty food — billed as a protein powerhouse that’s healthier than chips and other packaged snacks. But is jerky really good for you?

One issue is that jerky is often cured with sodium nitrate or sodium nitrite, ingredients you’ll want to avoid. Some products are cured with celery powder or celery juice — also rich sources of nitrates. To minimize nitrates and nitrites in your jerky, your best bet is to check the ingredients for any concentrated form of them. Another issue with jerky is that it tends to be very high in sodium. Q. I have an aunt that I was close to growing up. I am 23 and came out to her this summer. She’s been surprisingly great, but she talks about wanting to set me up with other gay men that she happens to know. Do you or your boyfriend say something in the moment? How about: “Yes, you’ve mentioned that before. Could we stop dwelling on it, though? I know you may be joking, but it hurts.”

A larger, more private conversation could paint the bigger picture. But your boyfriend needs to step up here and be willing to mediate, or your dinner disappearances are understandable. What matters most is that you’re feeling targeted — not whatever her intentions may be. Fingers crossed she just needs guidance in better ways to make a connection.

Sketched in history 1922-2018 Stan Lee, a writer and editor often credited with helping American comics grow up by redefining the notion of a superhero — including the self-doubting Spider-Man, the bickering Fantastic Four, the swaggering Iron Man and the raging Incredible Hulk — died Monday at a hospital in Los Angeles. He was 95.

Lee’s name became synonymous with the company that would become Marvel Comics, which he joined as a teenage assistant and stayed with for much of his adult life.

Born Stanley Martin Lieber on Dec. 28, 1922, in New York City, the eldest son of Romanian Jewish immigrants, Lee came by his pen name as a teenager. After graduating from high school, Lee took a job with Timely, a company that published Marvel. During World War II, Lee served in the Army.

After his discharge, he continued spinning out science-fiction and monster comics for Timely, which was renamed Atlas.

In 1947, he married Joan Boocock, a British-born hat model. After toiling in comics for 20 years as a self-described hack, on the verge of quitting the

business, he was ordered by his boss to emulate a line of superheroes done by rival DC Comics.

The art form had entered a dark age after Senate hearings in

the early 1950s that condemned the trade for contributing to juvenile delinquency. In the ’60s, Lee took a distinctly new approach to characters and setting, as well

as to the very interaction with readers who had grown used to comics featuring flawless heroes with uncomplicated morals.

His full-color, complex characters helped foster a revival in a largely moribund profession.

Much of Lee’s success was indebted to his Marvel partnership with artist and frequent co-creator Jack Kirby. Their first superheroes, appearing in 1961, were the bickering Fantastic Four. Other heroes came with their own weaknesses, such as the Jekyll-and-Hyde-like Incredible Hulk, who could not control the anger that gave him his strength.

With artist Steve Ditko, Lee in 1962 created Spider-Man. In 2002, the “Spider-Man” movie opened at the box office and grossed more than $800 million worldwide. The Spider-Man films, as well as the X-Men franchise, turned Marvel characters into box office juggernauts. In the past decade alone, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has grossed more than $17.5 billion globally.

Johnny Galecki, 43, and girlfriend Alaina Meyer, 21, made their red carpet debut Sunday at the People’s Choice Awards in Santa Monica, Calif. “Peeps choice was so fun with my bae,” Meyer wrote on Instagram.

“Last night was wonderful,” Galecki wrote on his page. The couple began dating earlier this year. Galecki previously was in a relationship with his “Big Bang Theory” co-star Kaley Cuoco from 2008 to 2010. (EXPRESS)
