Security cameras at a Turkish shopping mall captured an unusual shoplifter — a stray dog that stole from at least three businesses, AOL reported. Footage from Istanbul’s Viaport Shopping Center shows the cunning canine snatching a pink sweater from one store despite a man’s efforts to stop it. The dog was also seen swiping a shawl in the cafeteria and a white T-shirt from another store. Mall management reimbursed the stores. (EXPRESS)

In losing a Grand Slam of Darts match to two-time world champion Gary Anderson 10-2, Wesley Harms was outclassed. But he claims he was also outgassed. Anderson strongly denied the accusation, saying that he thought the offensive odors were coming from his opponent. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

A diverse portrait of service MILITARY Stacy Pearsall was frustrated, demoralized and in pain in 2008 the day she arrived for yet another appointment at a Department of Veterans Affairs hospital. A combat photographer for the Air Force, she had suffered injuries in roadside bombings and an ambush in Iraq, leaving her with neurological, psychological and physical problems. At 28, she could no longer run or lift anything over 5 pounds, and doctors had said her career as a war photographer was over. In the waiting room, an older veteran seated beside her engaged her in conversation. “He told me about surviving Normandy and liberating a concentration camp,” she said. His stories managed to pull her up from her well of misery. “I realized that others at the VA had so many important stories,” she said. “I realized that I didn’t need to be in a uniform to serve my community.” Instead, she could do it through taking their pictures. H. Johnson VA Medical Center in Charleston, S.C., where she lives, let her set up a small studio in the waiting room and she began taking pictures of veterans who came through and were interested in sitting for a portrait. In the past decade, she has expanded to about 7,500 veterans in 29 states, a sprawling, ongoing undertaking called the Veterans Portrait Project. A selection of her portraits of female veterans, “Shooter: Combat From Behind the Camera,”

opened this weekend at the Women in Military Service for America Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery. Pearsall was there Saturday and Sunday, shooting portraits of veterans who had signed up to be photographed. In photographing veterans around the country, Pearsall hopes to illustrate how diverse the community is. Jane Newman, who served with the Army Nurse Corps from 1968 to 1994 in Japan, Italy, Germany and the United States, said having her portrait included in the exhibit has particular resonance because she served as a docent there for several years and has seen what it means to female veterans. “Having a grandmother show her grandson the pictures of her in uniform during World War II or Korea — they’re there and they’re so proud that their story is being told,” said Newman, who lives in Great Falls, Va. Sitting for a portrait with Pearsall meant “a lot more than just going to have your picture taken,” she added. “I see how this projects what the military is, the diversity of the military.” TARA BAHRAMPOUR

Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., will soon be in charge of the powerful House Committee on Oversight.
He’s not finished yet Elijah Cummings endured two painful years. Soon he’ll be more powerful than ever. POLITICS When the word of the Lord came to Elijah, it arrived on a slip of paper tucked in a stranger’s bra. In 2017, Congressman Elijah Cummings, D-Md., had been laid up in a Johns Hopkins hospital bed for two months, crippled by pain after a difficult recovery from a heart valve replacement, when an interloper came bursting through the door, calling his name. “She reaches into her bosom and pulls out a note,” Cummings, 67, said recently. “She says, ‘The Lord has been waking me all night. … It was so important I thought I’d write it down. It says: He don’t mean you no harm, he’s just trying to get your attention. He wants you to know he ain’t finished with you yet.’ ” If God was trying to get his attention, he wasn’t being subtle. This month, Democrats triumphed in elections across the country, winning back the House of Representatives. In doing so, Cummings returns to Congress hobbled physically but more powerful than ever. Armed with

a gavel and subpoenas, he is the soon-to-be chairman of the House Committee on Oversight. For Cummings, this is the culmination of two years riddled with painful moments. He’d tried to work with President Trump only to have it blow up in his face. He’d been ignored by his Republican colleagues on the committee time and again. And he just couldn’t seem to stay out of the hospital. With a healthy heart, and in control, Cummings has limitless possible targets: hush money paid to a porn star on Trump’s behalf, citizenship questions on the census, and dozens of other oh-yeah-remember-thats that slipped out of the churning news cycle unanswered. The difficulty won’t be finding things to look into. It will be figuring out what’s worth looking into. But, even if Cummings is open and does everything by the book, there’s at least one Republican who won’t see it that way. “If the Democrats think they are going to waste Taxpayer Money investigating us at the

House level, then we will likewise be forced to consider investigating them for all of the leaks of Classified information, and much else, at the Senate level,” President Trump tweeted recently. Is it possible that Democrats are getting carried away? Can Cummings really be the hero they need to stand up to Trump? After all, Cummings may want to maintain the moral high ground, but is that even possible in a fight with the president? Leana Wen, the new president of Planned Parenthood, said it’s not for her to say, necessarily,

but she knows a fighter when she sees one. She worked with Cummings during her time as the Baltimore health commissioner. The day she saw him for the first time out of the hospital, he looked tired. She told him it was good to see him. “He said, ‘It’s good to be seen and not viewed, if you know what I mean,’ ” she recalled. “To me, that meant he was back.” Cummings tends to downplay his time in the hospital. It was just a little shortness of breath. Then a simple heart procedure. Then a gout flare-up and rehabilitation to gain back muscles lost from weeks unable to move. Yes, it was excruciatingly painful, he’ll say. But, no, he never really thought his life was in danger. He was always itching to get back. “If he were to slow down too much,” his younger brother James Cummings said, “it would probably kill him.” In that case, the next two years may be the healthiest of Elijah Cummings’ life. Family lawyers say she went into cardiac arrest and remains in a semi-vegetative state, unable to walk or talk. No recount for candidate who lost by a single vote A panel of Virginia Republicans has voted against holding a recount of a GOP state House primary contest that was decided by one vote. The Roanoke Times reports that a Republican legislative district committee voted Sunday not to perform a recount of Saturday’s primary for the 24th state House district. Candidate Jimmy Ayers called for a recount after initial results show him losing to rival Ronnie Campbell by one vote with more than 2,000 votes cast. (AP) MONTGOMERY COUNTY
Two more found guilty in pre-graduation slayings Two more men were found guilty Monday in the execution style killings of a pair of Montgomery County high school students on the eve of their graduations last year. The verdicts bring the number of convictions to three in the crime that left Artem Ziberov, 18, and Shadi Najjar, 17, dead. Edgar Garcia-Gaona, 25, and Rony Galicia, 26, were each found guilty of first-degree murder, robbery and other counts after a three-week trial. In January, Jose Canales-Yanez, 27, was convicted in the case. The fourth suspect, Roger Garcia, 21, awaits trial. (TWP)

D.C. offered plenty in Amazon HQ2 bid REGION D.C. offered Amazon up to $1 billion in tax incentives to open a second headquarters with 50,000 jobs in D.C., likely the largest subsidy ever offered by the city to a single employer but also far less than other jurisdictions agreed to provide to the tech giant. The package, released Monday by Mayor Muriel Bowser, offered discounts on property, sales and corporate franchise taxes over a 15-year period as outlined in an existing city law aimed at luring tech jobs to the city. Bowser’s office estimated the package’s value between $488 million and $1.053 billion depending upon the number of jobs Amazon would have created, how many were filled by D.C. residents, how much office space the company occupied and other factors. Unlike states including Maryland and New Jersey that approved much larger subsidies directly for Amazon, all the incentives the city offered were available to other employers considered “Qualified High Technology Companies” under a 2000 law, said Bowser’s top economic aide, Deputy Mayor Brian Kenner. “It’s something g that every

D.C. offered other benefits to Amazon, including “one-day permitting” for developers constructing Amazon’s new buildings, a dedicated liaison between city government and the company, a pilot program of autonomous cars, expansion of the city’s fiber-optic network and the integration of Amazon technology into the company’s campus. Maryland offered more than eight times what D.C. did, an estimated $8.5 billion, while Virginia and Arlington County agreed to provide the company with $573 million for 25,000 jobs plus $223 million for transportation
improvements that should also benefit the community. When Amazon announced its decision to put a new campus in Crystal City, Bowser applauded it as a “win for D.C.” Kenner said Amazon had clearly made access to the nation’s capital a priority. He said he had already heard from local universities that are interested in updating their curriculum to fit Amazon’s needs. “I think they got as close to Washington frankly as they could,” he said. “We know that one of the reasons that they chose this region are highly educated workforce and great public transit and, frankly, we’re in a region that is growing.” JONATHAN O’CONNELL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Yellow Liners be ready TRANSPORTATION Metro Yellow Line riders basking in post-Thanksgiving bliss could be in for a rude awakening when they arrive at their stations the Monday after the long holiday weekend: There will be no Yellow Line trains to board. In a SafeTrack-like capital project, Metro will eliminate Yellow Line service for 14 consecutive days, from Nov. 26 through Dec. 9, to rebuild the tracks on the Yellow Line bridge — the structure linking Pentagon station in Virginia to L’Enfant Plaza in the District. While there will be no Yellow Line service, all stations will remain open during the shutdown. For riders at Yellow Lineonly stations in Alexandria, that means trains will follow an abnormal service pattern: Blue Line trains will serve Huntington and Eisenhower Avenue stations, entering the District via Arlington Cemetery and through the capacity-strained Rosslyn tunnel. From Pentagon, the trip to L’Enfant Plaza will take 15 minutes longer than it would on the Yellow Line, according to Metro’s trip planner — and that’s before customers factor in any potential delays. Metro is warning of crowding as Blue and Yellow line stations are served by only half as many trains — with arrivals every 16 minutes. “We’re doing the best we can to make sure the word is out,” said Alexandria City Council member Paul Smedberg, who also is an alternate member of the Metro board. “I mean, it’s obviously going to be very disruptive. . . . It’ll be a different commuting pattern potentially for folks, if they’re not taking time off during holiday time, and there are going to be impacts.”
NIKKI KAHN (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Beginning Monday, service on the line will shut down for 14 days for track work
Metro says the Yellow Line work comes at a time of year when ridership is typically lighter than usual.
Metro said the work comes at a time of year — between major holidays — when ridership is typically lighter than usual. Still, the work is expected to impact about 50,000 daily trips — about 8 percent of Metro’s ridership — and mostly those who travel on the Blue and Yellow lines in Virginia. General Manager Paul Wiedefeld said a full-line shutdown, while disruptive, is unavoidable as the agency works to rehabilitate a bridge that opened when the Yellow Line launched in 1983. The transit agency said the project will involve a full track replacement on both tracks
26-year-old man fatally shot Sunday night in Brightwood Park in NW
across the bridge span, including new steel rails, grout pads and fasteners. Riders south of the Pentagon can expect to see their service cut in half and have longer trips into the District if they typically take the Yellow Line. Metro says it has dispatched “street teams” to pass out flyers and inform riders at Blue and Yellow line stations of the shutdown, and is getting out the message with email and text alert blasts, a mix of public announcements, social media postings and notifications on 7000-series rail car screens, for example.
Still, Wiedefeld said some riders will inevitably miss the warnings or fail to heed them. That possibility is magnified by the fact that tens of thousands could be away for the holiday weekend. “Our experience is that people tend to pay attention to it right before it happens,” Wiedefeld said. “We also recognize that people, until the day of the event, they tend to not focus on it.” It’s a scenario that played out with disastrous consequences at Reagan National Airport during Veterans Day weekend, when a partial Metro shutdown combined with rain and airline delays created a nightmarish traffic jam that left travelers stranded on the George Washington Memorial Parkway; social media reports indicated some were running from the gridlocked roads to the airport terminal to catch their flights. For the upcoming shutdown, Metro will not run shuttles along the usual rail route — though a free shuttle bus will ferry passengers from Franconia-Springfield to Pentagon, as during SafeTrack. Meanwhile, the post-Thanksgiving service suspensions will not just impact commuters south of the District. While Metro’s Red, Green, Orange and Silver lines are expected to run normally during weekdays, another project will shut down the Green and Yellow lines in the District the weekend of Dec. 1-2. Metro says the Archives and Waterfront stations will be shuttered, while the Green and Yellow line platforms at Gallery Place and L’Enfant Plaza will be closed as well. Metro says it is installing new station lighting in the area from Mount Vernon Square to Navy Yard. FAIZ SIDDIQUI (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Seeing snow? Maybe cut the air conditioner. Q. It was snowing Nov. 15, so Orange Line rider Kimberly Broden wants to know why the air conditioner was on in her Metro car after work for the second day in a row. A. Metro spokeswoman Sherri Ly would only say that the newest 7000-series trains operate in summer mode when it’s 73 degrees or hotter outside, and are supposed to keep the temperature in the cars at 73. When it’s between 65 and 73, the temperature in the car varies, said Ly, who wouldn’t elaborate. When it’s colder than 65, the air conditioning is in winter mode, and the train is supposed to be kept at 65 degrees, taking into account “the fact that most passengers … are wearing heavy outerwear that they generally keep on while aboard the train,” she said. OK, but why was air conditioning on in November? Metro’s response to a tweet Broden sent suggests the settings are set too low. “We do have heat on our trains but there are preset temperatures for the railcars. When the weather is cold outside it may feel as if the train is blowing cold air. … Our car maintenance team is working to have the preset temperature increased in our fleet,” Metro responded. Not leaving ‘hell zone’
A few hardy wildfire survivors hunker down at home, ignoring pleas to evacuate Troy Miller views a burned-out car on his property in Concow, Calif.

CALIFORNIA Brad Weldon lost his home to fire when he was a kid, so when a deadly wildland blaze came roaring toward his house in the pines where he lives with his 89-yearold blind mother, he wasn’t going to let disaster strike twice. Weldon and his mother’s caregiver, armed only with a garden hose and buckets, successfully fought the flames for 24 hours. At times, they had to lie down in the dirt to “avoid burning up” as 60 mph winds drove flames through the forest. Having saved his home in Paradise, Calif., Weldon’s not leaving what he now calls the “hell zone.” “If they take me out of here, it will be at gunpoint,” Weldon said. “My mom says they’ll have to beat her ass, too. She ain’t going without a fight.” Weldon is among a small group of fire survivors who have defied orders to leave and decided to stick it out in the blackened and smoldering landscape. Flames leveled the town of Paradise, which is about 140 miles north of San Francisco, and much of the surrounding area, killing at least 77 people and destroying more than 10,500 homes. It’s an audacious endeavor to stay behind in the smoky ruins with all the challenges that remain: There’s no power, no public water supply and there’s nowhere nearby to get supplies. Those who leave to get groceries, drinking water or fuel for generators aren’t allowed to return. Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said he didn’t know how many people were living in the evacuation zones. Deputies who encounter someone in the area will confirm they live there, but won’t necessarily take other action. “We’re not dragging them out,” he said. “If some guy stayed at his

Patrick Knuthson, who managed to save his large metal workshop that has a small apartment inside, said he’s not planning to leave and has plenty of food and fuel to provide electricity to his living space and to pump water from his well. Knuthson has appointed himself as a guardian in his neck of the woods on the outskirts of Paradise, where only two of 22 houses remained standing on his road. He has spray-painted a sign saying, “Looters will be shot!!” “I got my neighborhood locked down,” Knuthson said. “We’re all armed. Author chosen instead of comic for press dinner Say goodbye to the jokes that have flowed from the dais of the White House correspondents’ dinner for decades: The White House Correspondents’ Association announced Monday that biographer Ron Chernow will be the featured speaker at the annual event this spring. Chernow is an esteemed historian who has chronicled the lives of George Washington, Alexander Hamilton and Ulysses S. Grant. Having a serious speaker is a big break from the tradition of having a stand-up comedian entertain the ballroom of journalists, members of Congress and administration types. The programming switcheroo followed the controversy over last year’s comedian, Michelle Wolf, who landed polarizing punch lines about White House press secretary Sarah Sanders, who attended the dinner in place of President Trump. Following the announcement Monday, Wolf tweeted that the correspondents’ association “are cowards. The media is complicit. And I couldn’t be prouder.” Chernow said in a press release that he has been asked to make the case for the First Amendment. But he promised to make his performance, which will take place April 27, at least a little entertaining. “While I have never been mistaken for a standup comedian, I promise that my history lesson won’t be dry,” Chernow said. The screen-time quandary
Parents struggle with how to limit their kids’ use of digital devices

TECHNOLOGY It is Saturday morning, and 10-year-old Henry Hailey is up at the crack of dawn playing the popular online game “Fortnite.” The fifth-grader’s enthusiasm never wanes. Would he play all day if his parents let him? “Probably,” he concedes with a grin. But they do not. Like many other parents, the Haileys are on a reinvigorated mission to limit screen time for Henry and his 15-year-old brother, Everett. Getting Henry off screens has been a constant battle, his parents say. “Then once he’s off, there’s a lot of complaining and grumpiness for a while as we try to coax him to do something else,” says his mom, Barb Hailey. “What is it all for?” The goal, experts say, should be to help kids learn to manage their own time as they get older and to stay physically active and socially connected as much offline as on. But parents in many American households are finding the power struggles difficult, especially as more kids get access to screens at younger and younger ages. A survey of 13- to 17-year-olds released this fall by the nonprofit Common Sense Media found that 95 percent of U.S. teens have their own mobile device. Seventy percent of them check social media several times a day, up from 34 percent in 2012. More than half say that their devices

distract them from homework or the people they’re with. Some tech companies now at least acknowledge concerns about overuse and outright abuse of digital media. Apple instituted a “Screen Time” function in its latest iPhone software. It monitors app use and allows users — or their parents — to establish limits. Google for Families and Google Play, found on Android phones, and various independent apps also allow parents set some restrictions. Researchers who study these trends generally refrain from using the word “addiction” when it comes to screens, as it’s not an official diagnosis in the mental health world. But this summer, the World Health Organization
added “gaming disorder” to its list of afflictions. That is gaming that severely interferes with relationships, school and work. The diagnosis is still under review by U.S. health authorities. Sometimes, experts say, digital immersion exacerbates an existing condition, such as depression, anxiety or issues with body image. That’s why teens who attend treatment at Newport Academy, a residential rehab and mental health program with sites across the country, must check their digital devices at the door. “Almost always, one of the symptoms is an excessive amount of time on smartphones,” says Heather Senior Monroe, a Newport Academy administrator. “And it’s usually a large symptom.”
Experts say time limits can help but are sometimes a moot point given how deeply technology is “embedded in our daily life,” says Sarah Domoff, a psychologist at Central Michigan University. Some parents simply put off getting their kid a phone. Jacqui Koch, a college professor and mother in Wilmette, Ill., had her sixth-grade daughter sign a pledge to wait until eighth grade for a smartphone — part of the national “Wait Until 8th” movement. “We are definitely not the norm of what we’re surrounded by,” Koch says, noting that she saw a “huge uptick” of kids with phones in fifth grade. Now, she says, some parents she knows are trying to backpedal, “and that’s hard.” MARTHA IRVINE (AP)
ELEVATOR PLUNGE
The number of floors six people dropped while trapped in an elevator early Friday in one of Chicago’s tallest skyscrapers. One of several cables holding the elevator broke and the car fell rapidly, landing somewhere near the 11th floor, the Chicago Tribune reported Monday. The people were leaving a restaurant on the 95th floor inside the building formerly known as the John Hancock Center. They were trapped for nearly three hours before firefighters broke through a wall more than 10 stories above ground from a parking garage to rescue them. There were no serious injuries. Chickenpox has taken hold of a school in North Carolina where many families claim religious exemption from vaccines. Cases of chickenpox have been multiplying at the Asheville Waldorf School, which serves children from nursery school to sixth grade in Asheville, N.C. About a dozen infections grew to 28 at the beginning of the month. By Friday, there were 36, the Asheville Citizen-Times reported. The outbreak ranks as the state’s worst since the chickenpox vaccine became available more than 20 years ago. Since being introduced in 1995, the two-dose course has succeeded in limiting the highly contagious disease that once affected 90 percent of Americans. The virus used to crop up in about 4 million cases annually in the U.S., causing more than 10,000 hospitalizations and between 100 and 150 deaths. The school is a symbol of the small but strong movement against the most effective means of preventing the spread of infectious diseases. The percentage of children under 2 who haven’t received any vaccinations has quadrupled since 2001, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Jennifer Mullendore, the medical director of Buncombe County, N.C., said: “We want to be clear: Vaccination is the best protection from chickenpox.” ISAAC STANLEY-BECKER

nation+world Israel appears to avoid early elections amid turmoil over Gaza Strip
ISRAEL In another twist in a rollercoaster five days for Israeli politics, a key ally of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu decided not to quit Monday as had been expected, allowing the rightwing government to limp along and possibly avoid new elections. The turmoil was sparked by an intense bout of fighting with militants in the Gaza Strip last week and capped by an ultimatum from Education Minister Naftali Bennett. Although Bennett retracted his demand to become defense minister,

opposition parties still plan to file a motion of no confidence in the government Wednesday. Netanyahu faces a serious challenge given his coalition’s razor-thin majority in Israel’s parliament, the Knesset: 61 seats out of 120. His government will have a tough time passing controversial legislation and could face political blackmail. The surprise resignation last week of Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman precipitated the biggest coalition crisis Netanyahu has faced to date. The hawkish Liberman cited disagreements with Netanyahu over how best to tackle the never-ending cycle of violence with Hamas, the Islamist group that rules Gaza. The flare-up of violence last

week was prompted by a botched Israeli operation in Gaza. In response, militants fired over 460 rockets and mortar shells into
Israel. Israeli jets struck about 160 targets in the Palestinian enclave. Less than 48 hours after the fighting began, Netanyahu accepted a cease-fire, prompting accusations that he had caved to Hamas. Ahead of his much-anticipated news conference Monday, there had been speculation that Bennett, head of the Jewish Home party, would resign. Bennett had said that if he were not appointed defense minister, his eight-member Knesset faction would quit the government, causing it to collapse. By Monday, he had dropped his demand, saying he would stay on as education minister to help in the “great mission of making Israel win again.”

BUSINESS Nissan Chairman Carlos Ghosn, who became one of the auto industry’s most powerful executives by engineering a turnaround at the Japanese manufacturer, was arrested Monday and will be fired for allegedly underreporting his income and misusing company funds, the automaker said. The scandal reverberated around the globe and abruptly threw into question Ghosn’s future as leader of the RenaultNissan-Mitsubishi alliance, which sold 10.6 million cars last year, more than any other manufacturer. Nissan CEO Hiroto Saikawa said Ghosn was taken into custody after being questioned by prosecutors upon arriving in Japan earlier in the day. Ghosn is of French, Brazilian and Lebanese background and lives in both France and Japan. Nissan said Ghosn, 64, and another senior executive, Greg Kelly, were accused of offenses involving millions of dollars that were discovered during a monthslong investigation set off by a whistleblower. Kelly was also arrested. Saikawa said three major types of misconduct were found: underreporting income to financial authorities, using investment funds for personal gain and illicit use of company expenses. Nissan’s board will vote Thursday on dismissing Ghosn and Kelly. YURI KAGEYAMA (AP)

Next rover to study Martian crater lake
CONGRESS
Rule against hats in House may change
SCIENCE In a search for ancient life on Mars, NASA will send its next rover to explore Jezero Crater — the site of a former delta and lake. The rover, which is scheduled to launch in 2020, is equipped with a drilling system that can collect and store rock samples that contain clues to Mars’ ancient past. Once the samples are cached, NASA hopes to send follow-up missions to retrieve the samples and return them to Earth. “Getting samples from this lake-delta system will revolutionize how we think about Mars and its ability to harbor life,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, NASA’s associate administrator for science. The landing site selection came after years of research and days of fierce debate. Among the alternatives considered were Columbia Hills, an ancient hot spring that was explored by the now-defunct rover Spirit, and Northeast Syrtis, a network of ancient mesas that may have harbored underground water. Ultimately, Zurbuchen said, Jezero was selected for the diversity of its terrain. Each type

of rock at the site — from clays that could preserve signs of ancient organisms to volcanic rocks that hint at Mars’ planetary evolution — should help the rover achieve its two main science goals: First, to determine what the Red Planet’s environment was like deep in the past. And second, to figure out whether life ever got going there. In a conference announcing the decision Monday, Mars 2020 project scientist Ken Farley described delta systems as “extremely good at preserving biosignatures.” Results from past missions have revealed that Mars was not always the desolate desert world we see today. Landforms like the driedup delta at Jezero Crater
demonstrate that liquid water existed on the surface — which means Mars may have had a thicker atmosphere to keep the water from boiling away. This new view of Mars resembles what is known about early Earth. If a microbe ever swam in Mars’ waterways, its organic remains may still be buried in the mudstones along the rim of Jezero Crater. The launch window for Mars 2020 opens July 17, 2020, with an expected landing in February 2021. “We’re not going to go to any other place any time soon,” Zurbuchen said. “Mars is the obvious place, after the moon, to extend our presence deeper and deeper into space.” SAR AH K APL AN AND

Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, who is a co-author of the proposal, was born in Somalia and came to the U.S. as a refugee. She wears a headscarf, which could fall afoul of the 181-year-old House rule banning members from wearing any kind of hat on the floor. The proposed rule change would allow all religious headwear into the House. (TWP)

Sensual fresco found in Pompeii bedroom
Archaeologists have found a fresco in an ancient Pompeii bedroom that depicts a sensual scene of the Roman god Jupiter, disguised as a swan, and a legendary queen of Sparta from Greek mythology. The figure of Leda being impregnated by the god in swan form was a fairly common home decoration theme in Pompeii. The fresco, with its colors still remarkably vivid, was discovered Friday during ongoing work on the ancient city’s structures. The suit, filed by Sens. Redskins sign Sanchez as No. 2 QB
RICK SNIDER | SPORTS GURU
It seems insensitive to believe the Redskins can survive and even thrive without quarterback Alex Smith. But history shows they can. Joe Theismann’s broken right tibia and fibula 33 years to the day before Smith suffered the same gruesome injury Sunday changed the Redskins for years. Theismann never played again; reserve Jay Schroeder not only won four of five games at the end of the 1985 season, but became the team’s first 4,000-yard passer the next year — back when 3,000 yards was a big deal. Schroeder also set the team up for a Super Bowl run when he went 8-2 during the ’87 season before an injury in the finale kept him out of the playoffs. Doug Williams regained the starting job he held earlier in the season and won the Super Bowl, leading to Schroeder’s trade. The sad truth t uth was that
Theismann needed to be replaced. At 36, he was having his worst season as a starter with eight touchdowns and 16 interceptions, and the Redskins were 6-5. Coach Joe Gibbs refused to bench the quarterback who had recently led the Redskins to consecutive Super Bowls, but they were clearly better with Schroeder. A similar pattern was playing out under Smith, 34. In his first season in Washington, he was struggling. Smith’s 85.7 passer rating was his worst since 2010. He threw two interceptions before he was injured Sunday against Houston, one for a 101-yard pick-six. Nothing seemed to click for Smith, who clearly didn’t trust his receivers to make plays. Coach Jay Gruden, like Gibbs, was reluctant to bench a quarterback who was not far removed from success. Smith’s 104.7 rating last season with Kansas City was a career-best. The Redskins were hoping he would improve over time. Now it’s Colt McCoy’s time to p ove hims prove himself once more.

History lesson: Redskins can win with a backup QB
Longtime reserve quarterback Colt McCoy will try to replace Alex Smith, top, as successfully as Jay Schroeder replaced Joe Theismann in 1985.
Like Schroeder, McCoy made a quick impact, throwing a touchdown Sunday on his first pass since 2015. Five years in the Redskins’ system have made McCoy the expert on what Gruden wants, and McCoy quickly led another TD drive to take a 21-20 lead. Unfortunately, he couldn’t muster a third score in the 23-21 loss. McCoy, 32, has an uneven history. The University of Texas passer was hurt in the Longhorns’ loss to Alabama in the 2010 national championship game, then struggled for four NFL seasons before becoming Washington’s third-stringer in 2014. After replacing an
injured Kirk Cousins in Week 7, McCoy beat Dallas in overtime the next week, completing 25 of 30 passes for 299 yards. That’s why Gruden has kept McCoy despite there being cheaper alternatives. He has long been Gruden’s insurance. Now the divisionleading Redskins (6-4) face the Cowboys (5-5) on Thursday in Dallas with McCoy once again emerging from the shadows. History says the Redskins can survive and even thrive with McCoy.
The Redskins signed journeyman Mark Sanchez to back up new starter Colt McCoy after working out several veteran quarterbacks Monday, the team announced. Sanchez, 32, last played in 2016 for the Cowboys and signed a one-year deal in 2017 with the Bears to back up and help mentor then-rookie Mitchell Trubisky. Sanchez was a fouryear starter for the Jets after being selected No. 5 overall in 2009. Several members of the Redskins’ coaching staff were with the Jets during Sanchez’s tenure, including Redskins offensive coordinator Matt Cavanaugh, who was the quarterbacks coach for Sanchez’s first three seasons. Exercise overuse injuries can often have ambiguous warnings such as stiffness and delayed soreness
EXERCISE If you’ve ever set foot in an exercise class, you’ve surely been told to “listen to your body.” It’s usually an apt instruction, but sometimes exercise-related injuries speak to us after the fact or in a language we don’t always understand — stiffness and delayed soreness, for example, rather than outright pain. What do these delayed symptoms mean? How do we treat the underlying injuries that are causing them? Or, better yet, how do we avoid such injuries? First, pay attention. “With overuse injuries, oftentimes you’ll just notice diffuse soreness and write that off as normal,” says Justin Mullner, a D.C.-based doctor who specializes in sports medicine. “It doesn’t feel bad enough to stop your activity.” Sometimes, instead of making itself known as pain, the overuse injury causes disruptions and changes in movement patterns. If you have Achilles tendinitis, for example, you might start planting your foot differently while running. “These types of
injuries are often identified by a coach or trainer and not the athletes themselves,” Mullner says. Other sports injuries may show up as an ambiguous stiffness rather than pain — at least initially. That’s what happened to Michael Schaeffer, a D.C. resident who did “too much, too soon” when he resumed running after a long hiatus. “In the morning, my right heel would just feel stiff. I moved like a tin man,” Schaeffer says. When the stiffness turned into pain and he consulted a doctor, he was told that Achilles tendinitis was the likely cause. Most overuse injuries — such as stress injuries in bones (weakened but not fractured), degeneration and improper healing of soft tissue (tendinopathy), and inflammation (tendinitis) of soft tissue — don’t usually go away by themselves and require some therapy. Schaeffer is rehabilitating his heel and increasing his range of motion by doing heel stretches, calf strengthening, cycling and strength training. But he has hung up his running shoes for the time being.

“Recovery time will depend on how long you were pulling through injury.” JUSTIN MULLNER, a D.C.-based
doctor who specializes in sports medicine, on the importance of addressing exercise injuries sooner rather than later
The length of recovery varies, and you shouldn’t go back to your activity too soon, Mullner cautions. Instead, get your cardio fitness by cycling, swimming or using a rowing machine. Even if you’re just sore or stiff, “the damage to the tissue has already happened,” says Ben Fidler, a D.C.-based personal trainer. In this case, you should take steps to prevent it from progressing. Mullner and Fidler both recommend having a trainer or physical therapist look at your movement patterns to determine weaknesses and tight areas.
17th Annual Thanksgiving Day Trot for Hunger 5K is 9 a.m. Thursday at Freedom Plaza; $40-$45
That means that, as Fidler puts a client through an exercise, such as an overhead squat, he assesses the positioning of the feet in relation to the knees, how the torso is moving, whether the back is arching, whether the head is jutting forward, and so on. All of these movement patterns tell trainers how the client should exercise. “Stress fractures are often linked to ankle immobility, and lower-back pain can be caused by hip immobility,” Fidler says. Rotator cuff injuries and neck pain can be caused by a tight thoracic spine (middle of the back), ack), and knee pain can be caused d by weak gluteus muscles. Creating better movementt patterns throughout the body can ease that pain. But Mullner notes that even with the help of trainers, ners, some soreness is to be expected, cted, even desired, as we get stronger nger and progress through our drills. rills. So listen to your body. Iff it’s speaking to you through stiffness ness and delayed soreness, it may ay be time to see a specialist. GABRIELLA RIELLA

entertainment A trip though the South is no picnic for Tony (Viggo Mortensen) and Don (Mahershala Ali).
UNIVERSAL UNIVERSALPICTURES
Golden years lend Lorre a new beginning
Their two roads converge A journey south bonds an unlikely pair in the dramedy ‘Green Book’ FILM Early in “Green Book,” Tony Vallelonga, played by Viggo Mortensen, arrives at his Bronx home and finds some black handymen fixing his sink. After they leave, he delicately uses two fingers to pick up the water glasses they drank out of and deposits them in the garbage can. So it’s hard to believe that Tony would agree to drive a black musician around the Deep South in 1962. Except “Green Book,” which opens nationally Wednesday, is based on a true story.
Tony, better known as “Tony Lip,” is working as a bouncer at the Copacabana when he’s hired by pianist Dr. Don Shirley (“Moonlight’s” Mahershala Ali) to be his driver and bodyguard as the musician — “Doc,” to Tony — embarks on a series of gigs playing at places where he’s not allowed to eat. The dramedy’s title refers to a travel guide for African-Americans, published annually from the 1930s into the 1960s, originally called “The Negro Motorist Green-Book.” It listed safe restaurants and hotels in the South, as well as the names of towns to avoid — including “sundown towns,” where it was illegal for black people to be after sunset.
As the two set out, neither has any idea what they’re in for. “Doc, he’s ignorant about people like Tony and how they live and how they think,” says Mortensen (“Captain Fantastic”). “When he first meets Tony, he’s like, ‘This guy is just a pig. This is going to be a really long trip.’ Then Tony’s thinking, ‘Why is this guy stuck-up? This is going to be a really long trip.’ ” As Tony and Don make their really long trip, the two begin to find more of an understanding — while still finding time to annoy each other. Director Peter Farrelly — who co-wrote the script with Nick Vallelonga, the real-life Tony’s son, and Brian Currie — wanted
the film to examine the impact of the journey on both participants. “There’s the white savior trope and the black savior trope,” Farrelly says. “We didn’t want either of those; it’s just done too much in Hollywood films, and that wasn’t the story. It would have been inaccurate. The truth is these guys both changed on that journey. They changed each other.” And their contact with the racism of that time and place winds up forging a team. “Without even realizing it, it’s pushing them closer,” Mortensen says. “It’s like they’re back to back, and their backs gradually touch. It’s not me versus you anymore. It’s us against all these guys.” KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

Netflix orders “Innocent Man” docuseries, based on John Grisham book
TV REVIEW Among the promises of Netflix’s streaming revolution is the notion that people who excel at creating one kind of TV (such as Chuck Lorre) might truly flourish when freed from the challenges of prime time. Can a network producer rise to the challenge of creating something surprising and authentic, while still retaining that broad sense of appeal? With his tender yet hilariously brittle eight-episode dramedy “The Kominsky Method,” released Friday on Netflix, Lorre has answered that question with a confident yes. At 66, the reigning sitcom king (his hits for CBS include “Two and a Half Men” and “The Big Bang Theory”) veers from the usual sitcom format (studio audience; multiple cameras) to a thoughtfully conceived, singlecamera, funny/sad story. The show focuses on two older men — actor Sandy Kominsky (Michael Douglas) and his agent, Norman Newlander (Alan Arkin) — coping with mortality and other lion-inwinter agenda items: loneliness, professional decline, prostate problems and general entropy. For the most part, Lorre’s sense of humor stings and zings, in ways that honor and broaden his sitcom achievements. The show is snarky but personable, with most of the pleasure coming from Arkin and Douglas’ expert depiction of that rarest of things — a frank and honest friendship between two men. Mandy Moore married Taylor Goldsmith on Sunday, People reported. A source told the magazine that the actress and singer tied the knot in a small ceremony at her home in Pasadena, Calif. “There were a lot of pink decor, flower arrangements and candles,” the source said. People noted that her makeup artist, Jenn Streicher, posted — and then deleted — Instagram photos showing the “This Is Us” star wearing a pink gown and veil. Moore and Goldsmith dated for two years before getting engaged last fall. Moore was married to singer Ryan Adams from 2009 to 2016. (EXPRESS)
