Debt Panel Fails to Reach Deal Obama declares he’ll veto attempt to get rid of triggered cuts

MWi^_d]jed A special congressional supercommittee acknowledged failure Monday in efforts to cut the federal deficit by at least $1.2 trillion, and President Obama warned that he would veto any attempt to undo a resulting round of across-theboard spending cuts. The failure promptly triggered finger-pointing between Republicans and Democrats. In a statement at the White House after the supercommittee’s announcement, Obama said, “There will be no easy off-ramps on this one.” He called on Congress to figure out how to achieve deficit-reduction so that the automatic cuts are not triggered. “Despite our inability to bridge the committee’s significant differences, we end this process united in our belief that the nation’s fiscal crisis must be addressed and that we cannot leave it for the next gen-

The stock market was not exactly surprised that the debt supercommittee in Congress failed to reach a deal to cut the federal budget deficit. But since summer, investors have sold at the first hint of trouble. So on Monday, they sold big. The Dow Jones industrial average lost almost 250 points, and the Standard & Poor’s 500 index dropped 22.67. After the market closed Monday, the supercommittee’s bipartisan leadership officially announced they failed to reach a deal. (AP)

the committee last summer, failure by the six Republicans and six Democrats to reach a compromise is to trigger about $1 trillion in automatic spending cuts in military and domestic government programs beginning in 2013. In reality, though, it is unclear whether any of those reductions will ever take effect, since next year’s presidential and congressional elections have the potential to alter the political landscape before then. Hezbollah Busts CIA Spy Ring in Lebanon MWi^_d]jed Hezbollah has partially unraveled the CIA’s spy network in Lebanon, severely damaging the intelligence agency’s ability to gather vital information on the terrorist organization at a tense time in the region, former and current U.S. officials said. Officials said several foreign spies working for the CIA had been captured by Hezbollah in recent months. The blow to the CIA’s operations in Lebanon came after top agency managers were alerted last year to be especially careful handling informants in the Middle East country. Hezbollah’s longtime leader,

;o[i ed F[jhW[ki Intelligence officials are waiting to see how CIA Director David Petraeus will handle this Hezbollah fiasco. While in the military, the retired four-star general developed a reputation for exacting standards and holding people accountable. “[Petraeus] will deal with it head on and not try to bury it under the carpet,” said retired Army Col. Peter Mansoor, the Petraeus’ former executive officer in Iraq. (AP)

Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, boasted in June he had unmasked at least two CIA spies who had infiltrated the ranks of the organization, which the U.S. considers a terrorist group closely allied with Iran. Though the U.S. Embassy in

Lebanon officially denied the accusation, American officials concede that Nasrallah wasn’t lying and the damage spread like a virus as Hezbollah methodically picked off the CIA’s informants. The damage to the agency’s net-

work in Lebanon has been greater than usual, several former and current U.S. officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about security matters. The Lebanon crisis is the latest mishap involving CIA counterintelligence, defined as the undermining or manipulating of the enemy’s ability to gather information. Former CIA officials have said the once-essential skill has been eroded as the agency shifted from outmaneuvering rival spy agencies to fighting terrorists. In the rush for immediate results, former officers say, tradecraft has suffered. ADAM GOLDMAN AND MAT T APUZZO (AP)

Attacks by army defectors are transforming the Syrian uprising into an armed insurgency that threatens to spiral into civil war. The Free Syrian Army appears largely disorganized and is up against a fiercely loyal military. Still, without foreign military intervention or significant cracks in President Bashar Assad’s rule, the rebel group has emerged as the best hope for a growing number of protesters who have all but given up on peaceful resistance. “They are the real heroes of

this revolution,” said a protester in Hama, a hotbed of dissent. “Everyone else has abandoned us.” There are concerns the organized armed rebel group has given officials a pretext to crack down harder on dissent. Syria’s sectarian divide, where members of Assad’s minority Alawite sect rule over a Sunni majority, means an insurgency could escalate quickly. Reports: Activity Up at Iranian Nuclear Site Reactions are split over significance of surveillance footage FEB?J?9I

L_[ddW

7 :_l_i_l[ ?iik[ Lawmakers in Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state, voted Monday to support a call for it to be split into four smaller states. State Chief Minister Mayawati, who uses only one name, recently revived a proposal she’s lobbied for years, saying such a split would foster development and accountability. With 200 million people, it has a larger population than all but five countries in the world. (AP)

Satellite surveillance has shown an increase in activity at an Iranian site suspected of links to alleged work on nuclear weapons, officials tell The Associated Press. The reports come as the International Atomic Energy Agency and nations tracking Iran’s nuclear

-A

program increase efforts to monitor such sites after the strongest IAEA report to date on alleged Iranian nuclear development. But the significance is unclear. One official said it appeared Tehran is trying to cover its tracks by removing evidence of nuclear development. Counterparts from two other countries agreed there had been increased activity at the site but could not conclude that pointed to a cover-up. In Washington, Pentagon spokesman Capt. John Kirby said

he has “seen nothing to indicate that those concerns are warranted.” The focus is on a structure at a military site that a Nov. 8 IAEA report described as being used for nuclear-related explosives testing. The IAEA was alerted to the suspicions late last week. Ali Asghar Soltanieh, Iran’s chief delegate to the IAEA, dismissed the reports as “childish stories.” He said he had not heard of any such activity, describing the claims as “ridiculous.” (AP)

Arlington, Herndon, and Loudoun

Driving south on I-95 is horrible on a weekend on the best of days; Thanksgiving will be awful. Do you have any suggestions on how to get to Richmond from Silver Spring without going down 95 that might get me there in time to have some turkey? From Silver Spring, you could take Route 50 east and then go south on Route 301 across the Nice Bridge. But the thing I always point out, as often is pointed out to me, is that there are no undiscovered shortcuts at holiday time. It’s good to know alternatives, but there’s going to be heavy traffic everywhere.

Why doesn’t Metro post delays due to single tracking at stations? When I entered at White Flint Sunday, I saw no mention of it starting at Dupont. I don’t know why you didn’t see such a sign at White Flint. When visible, such signs are very helpful. I usually see them on the mezzanine level at stations, before going through the fare gates. For example, before the recent weekend when part of the Green Line was shut down, I saw a sign placed on a pole at the Mount Vernon Square station announcing the upcoming work. Also, announcements should be on the passenger information displays.

What’s your prediction for the ICC’s impact on traffic this weekend? And do you know how far it is from the 95/495 area (College Park) to the ICC/95 connection? I’d recommend the Intercounty Connector for those of you who live north of the Capital Beltway and are looking for a less crowded east-west route. For example, if you live on the west side of the region — say, Gaithersburg — and you’ve got a holiday flight out of BWI, why not try the ICC? It’s free through Dec. 4. The connector is about 16 miles from end to end, counting the segment that opens Tuesday morning. From the College Park area up I-95 to the ICC entrance is about 4.5 miles.

was taken to George Washington University Hospital, he said. The incident occurred about 6:44 p.m., and there was one witness to the incident, Stessel said. The witness told authorities “the man placed himself on the metal panel between two escalator units and subsequently fell an unknown distance down the ascending escalator,” he said.

The escalator was in service at the time of the incident, Stessel added. How did Metro know the Rman had been drinking? “The injured party said as much to transit police at the hospital,” Stessel wrote in an e-mail. Metro said Monday that the man had been treated and released. (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Waterfront Proposal Slammed Alexandria city staff says citizens group’s plan is unrealistic 7b[nWdZh_W Alexandria’s acting city manager and top city staff members, in strongly worded language, rejected the main points of the Citizens for an Alternative Alexandria Waterfront Plan on Monday, saying that it would cost taxpayers about twice as much as the city’s plan, that parts are “legally indefensible” and that the group was trying to halt, rather than man-

age, change along the city’s Potomac River waterfront. The alternative plan seriously overestimates how much money a museum would generate, its reliance on bond revenues would saddle taxpayers with a $100 million debt burden for two decades, and it underestimates the cost of f lood mitigation by $3 million, the city said. “We don’t think it’s financially feasible,” said Bruce Johnson, the acting city manager, who will return to his former job as chief financial officer next month. “We don’t think it’s legally defensible. ... ity to direct and manage change under this proposal. Change is coming, and it’s a matter of how we manage it.” The city government is locked in a disagreement with CAAWP, which formed in the spring because

its leaders thought the city’s twoyear process for collecting public input was flawed and the plan that the city proposed for redeveloping the waterfront was too commercial. Their objections led Mayor William D. Euille, a Democrat, to appoint a working group to find areas of consensus, but that process too has been rife with disagreements. The waterfront working group is wrapping up its task and expects to make a report to the city council soon; the council has set a public hearing for Jan. 21, when it is also scheduled to vote on a waterfront plan. Virginia Democrats said Monday they intend to file a lawsuit challenging the right of Republicans to seize a majority in the evenly divided state Senate. Senate Democrat ic Leader Dick Saslaw and Sen. Donald McEachin, D-Henrico, said they will ask a court to decide whether Republican Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling can cast the deciding vote in organizing the new Senate that takes office Jan. 11. McEachin said Virginia’s Constitution is unclear about whether the lieutenant governor, an official of the executive branch who presides over the Senate, can vote on Senate organizational matters because he’s not a senator. Egypt Reverts to Chaos Weary of military rule, protesters fight on in Cairo as Cabinet resigns 9W_he

Egypt’s civilian Cabinet offered to resign Monday after three days of violent clashes between demonstrators and security forces in Tahrir Square, but the action failed to satisfy protesters deeply frustrated with the new military rulers. The Health Ministry said at least 24 people have been killed and 1,750 wounded in the latest violence as activists sought to fill the streets for a “second revolution” to force out the generals who have failed to stabilize the country, salvage the The death toll since Saturday, economy or bring as of Monday democracy. evening, from T he c l a s he s new clashes have deepened the between disarray among Egyptian protEgypt’s political esters and the ranks, with the military. The protests in Tahrir and across the nation have forced the ruling military council and the Cabinet it backs into two concessions, but neither was significant enough to send anyone home. The council issued an anti-graft law that bans anyone convicted of corruption from running for office or holding a government post, a move that is likely to stop senior members from the Mubarak regime from running for public office. Security forces clash Monday night with thousands of protesters in Cairo’s Tahrir Square. During the day, black-clad security forces fired tear gas, rubber bullets and — many protesters said — live ammunition in the streets around Tahrir. Protesters hurled stones and threw back gas canisters that streamed stinging clouds. Gunfire crackled around the square, and injured protesters were brought to makeshift sidewalk clinics, where volunteer doctors scrambled from patient to patient. Police hit one field clinic with tear gas, forcing the staff to flee, struggling to carry the wounded. mitted its resignation to the council, a widely expected move. Protesters cheered and shouted, “God is great!” when the news arrived of the Cabinet resignation offer, but they almost immediately resumed their chant of “The people want to topple the field marshal” — a reference to military ruler Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi. “We are not clearing the square until there is a national salvation government that is representative and has full responsibility,” said activist Rami Shaat, who was at the site. The council released a statement

late Monday calling for a national dialogue to “urgently study the reasons for the current crisis and ways to overcome it.” The statement, carried by Egypt’s state news agency, said the military deeply regrets the loss of life and has ordered the Justice Ministry to form a panel to investigate the incidents of the past few days. Violence has steadily escalated since the clashes began Saturday, when police tried to clear several hundred protesters in the square. Repeated attempts to clear the protesters from Tahrir have failed, and a

8WYaijeho The ongoing turmoil comes a week before Egypt is to start key parliamentary elections, which many had hoped would be a landmark in the transition to democracy. Instead, they have been overshadowed by the standoff over the military. Activists believe that no matter who wins the vote, the generals will dominate the next government. The military says it will hand over power only after presidential elections, which it has vaguely said will be held in late 2012 or early 2013. (AP)

The protests have spread to other cities across the country, including Alexandria, where one death took place. Amnesty International condemned the violence. “While the Egyptian authorities have a duty to maintain law and order, they must not use excessive force to crack down on peaceful protests, something that poses a severe threat to Egyptians’ rights to assembly and freedom of expression,” the group said in a statement. The military on Sunday night issued a statement saying it did not intend to “extend the transitional period” and vowed not to let anyone hinder the “democratic transition.” The government has said elections will be held on schedule, starting on Nov. 28. Most Valuable Pitcher Fhe 8Wi[XWbb Detroit’s Justin Verlander became the first starting pitcher in a quarter-century voted Most Valuable Player, adding it to the Cy Young Award he won last week. Verlander earned the American League MVP honor Monday, receiving 13 of 28 first-place votes and 280 points in voting announced by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. “Obviously, pitchers are not just written off all of a sudden because they’re pitchers, Verlander said. Boston center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury was second with four firsts and 242 points, followed by Toronto right fielder Jose Bautista with five firsts and 231 points, Yankees center fielder Curtis Granderson with 215 and Detroit first baseman Miguel Cabrera with 193. “Not even in my w ildest dreams had I thought of this, Verlander said. “I want to say this is a dream come true. I can’t say that because my dream had already come true ... to win a Cy Young. And the next dream is to win a World Series. This wasn’t even on my radar until the talk started. Verlander won the AL’s pitching triple crown, going 24-5 with a 2.40 ERA and 250 strikeouts, the most wins in the major leagues since Oakland’s Bob Welch went 27-6 in 1990.

Verlander pitched his second career no-hitter at Toronto on May 7. Last week, he was a unanimous Cy Young winner. On Monday, he became the first pitcher voted MVP since Oakland’s Dennis Eckersley in 1992 and the first starting pitcher since Boston’s Roger Clemens in 1986. The 2006 AL Rookie of the Year, Verlander joined the Brooklyn Dodgers’ Don Newcombe as the only players to win all three major awards in their careers. Verlander appeared on only 27 ballots and was omitted by Jim Ingraham of the Herald-News in Ohio, who voted Bautista first. Sheldon Ocker of the Akron Beacon Journal voted Verlander eighth. Ingraham doesn’t think pitchers should be eligible for MVP. “If I was ever going to vote for pitcher for MVP, it would be him this year, Ingraham said. “He hasn’t appeared in 79 percent of their game. ... Would you vote for an NFL quarterback for MVP if he only appeared in three of his team’s 16 games, which would be 21 percent? RONALD BLUM (AP)

Close Game Cures Some of the Blues Redskins’ spirits rise after a spirited effort against the Cowboys J^[ H[Zia_di Barry Cofield’s mood has improved, even though the Washington Redskins’ losing streak is one game longer. A week after he feared the season would turn “historically ugly,” the defensive tackle saw enough in a 27-24 overtime loss to the Dallas Cowboys to feel that the Redskins won’t be a shield-your-eyes train wreck the rest of the way. “I caught some flak for saying we were really down, especially after last week’s loss,” Cofield said Monday. “But as depressed as I was last week, I’m optimistic this week.” Washington’s offense came to life against the Cowboys, scoring three touchdowns after getting only one in the three previous games combined. If the defense had played just a little better — or if any number of hard-luck breaks had gone the other way — the Redskins (3-7) wouldn’t have six straight losses. Rex Grossman has good games and bad, but he’s left little doubt that he’s the better choice at quarterback ahead of John Beck. He was solid, even inspiring, on Sunday, leading two-minute-drill touch-

We feel like if our offense scores more than 20 points, we should win.” If that were the case — if the offense scored more than 20 every game — the Redskins would be 7-3. Cash-Strapped Maryland to Cut 8 Teams Targeted programs given time to raise funds for survival 9ebb[][ Ifehji Writing that “inaction could be ruinous for the future of Maryland athletics,” University of Maryland President Wallace Loh released his response to the budgetary recommendations made by the President’s Commission on Intercollegiate Ath-

letics, agreeing with the commission’s recommendation to cut eight sports, effective July 1, 2012. But Loh and Athletic Director Kevin Anderson also gave the eliminated teams a chance to raise enough funds to ensure survival. At a news conference on Monday, Loh said it “is perhaps one of the most painful and heart-wrenching decisions I’ve made.” Anderson added that the “last month has been one of the most difficult times of my life.”

8WYaijeho An athletics commission released a report Nov. 14, proposing Maryland cut eight of its 27 varsity teams — men’s indoor and outdoor track; men’s cross country; men’s swimming and diving; women’s swimming and diving; men’s tennis; women’s water polo; and aerobics and tumbling (once known as competitive cheer) — to help alleviate a multimillion-dollar deficit in the school’s athletic department. (T WP)

Anderson recommended that supporters of the eliminated teams “be given the opportunity to raise eight years’ worth of total program costs by June 30, 2012, in order to keep the program in existence.” Loh said that the M Club, the main Maryland athletics booster club, has committed $1 million already to this campaign. Because of Title IX requirements two teams — one men’s, one women’s — will need to be saved together. (THE WASHING TON POST )

9Wbb je 7hci WdZ B[]i The SweatSolo app lets personal trainers monitor their clients’ workouts from afar

Trainers register on Sweatsolo.com for an account that lets them set client schedules and see their progress. It’s $19.99 a month with a one-year contract. Clients download the SweatSolo app from iTunes for $3.99 (it will be available for Android and Blackberry devices soon). Their trainers can then send them workouts.

ISTOCKPHOTO/EXPRESS PHOTO ILLUSTRATION

Rochelle Clarke spent four years traveling as a consultant. But her business idea didn’t come from her work — it came from her lack of workouts. “My health was suffering because I didn’t have my personal trainer with me,” she says. So the Washingtonian set out to create an app that would allow users to carry their personal trainers in their pockets. The result is SweatSolo, now available in the iTunes store. Trainers upload a schedule of workouts for their clients, who can use the app to pull up the exercises they’re supposed to be doing and mark each one when they’re finished. If a program is taking longer than it should, or not happening at all, it’s a sign something’s wrong. “They don’t need to raise their hands and say, ‘I need help.’ The trainer sees they’re missing workouts,” Clarke says. To deter cheaters from merely phoning it in — and not actually doing the workout — the app also lists where the client is when an exercise is marked completed. “If the location is a bar in Chinatown, the trainer will say, ‘Let me pick up the phone’ and find out what’s going on,” Clarke says. Over the past few months, SweatSolo conducted a pilot with D.C.-area trainers, including John Haley, who tested it with a client living in California. Without the app, he says, it would have been incredibly tricky to monitor her progress from across the country. “The time they’re not with you is always the hardest part,” says Haley, who even has trouble keeping local clients on track without regular appointments. In the past, he’s written up lists of exercises, but a printout is much easier to forget than a phone, which his client

was toting along to the gym anyway. “They’re using the devices to listen to music, and then they have the workout right there,” Haley says. More importantly, he feels like he’s right there, too. With the immediate feedback he’s getting, he’s been able to peek at her progress three times a week and adjust his schedule for her accordingly. “As a trainer, it gives me more work, but it allows me to do my job better,” he says. But the app is better suited to motivation than instruction. “Form is the hardest part,” Haley says. Just because the assignments are completed doesn’t mean they’re necessarily being done correctly, and there’s nowhere in the app to insert detailed descriptions or videos. In the case of his California client, she’s a former athlete, and Haley trusts she understands how to follow his directions. But with less-experienced exercisers, he says it would be necessary to meet face to face at least some of the time. That’s the point, says Clarke, who designed SweatSolo to serve as a supplement to in-person sessions, rather than as a substitute. The app has zero content unless a trainer has loaded it, and it’s there specifically for you. So despite the name, if you’re using SweatSolo, you’re never really on your own. My husband and I both work long hours and have a 5-year-old. It’s become clear that we unwind very differently. When the weekend comes, I want to cocoon with my family and spend time together in our home. My husband likes to plan events and invite people over. Every time Friday rolls around, I’m gearing up for battle and begging just to veg and hang out with our kid. Help me find the middle here. TIRED, VA

I ended an affair with a co-worker (married with children). I have no intention of letting anyone know, and if he wants to go on with his marriage, so be it. But I don’t want to work with him any longer. He’s very upset by this because he thinks it will be “traceable” to what happened between us. He’s worried that if I leave, people will speculate and know that something went on. I feel resentful of him trying to control what I do, but I also don’t want to do anything rash. OVER IT The best way to guarantee that no one finds out about an affair is to not have one, so I’m not feeling sympathy for him here. If it’s best for you emotionally to leave the job, leave the job. But think about whether that feels like the most autonomous thing for you to do, and make sure you didn’t get steamrolled or

treated inappropriately in this situation. It’s not up to you to put out the fires of speculation, given his role in creating them. Of course, my greatest hope for you is that as you leave this job, you’ll move toward healthier relationships, in which you have a chance of getting what you need.

Since you have two days in a weekend, a logistical compromise can be relatively simple: one day for cocooning, one day for social butterfly-ing. If he wants to participate in two events on two different days, then, in general, that should mean that other than those two activities, the rest of the days are low-key. This can’t always work, especially with a 5-year-old, who can get more party invitations than the president. So revisit your expectations in terms of social events: Can your husband ever go by himself? Is he taking responsibility for the effort that goes into having people over? Ideally, at the beginning of each week, he prioritizes one or two events, cuts the rest out, and together you outline your schedule.

days. That’s because local chefs have discovered that turkey — so often relegated to the Thanksgiving table or between slices of bread — can up the innovation and nutrition content of their menus. “It’s lean, high in protein and has more flavor than chicken,” says Bourbon Steak’s executive chef, Adam Sobel, who has created a Pilgrim-friendly burger. Here’s how they’re flipping the bird every day. NE V IN MARTELL

But no matter what culinary tradition she’s emphasizing in a dish, chef Khadija Banouas loves using turkey as her prime protein. “It’s healthier than pork or beef,” she explains. “Our customers want food that tastes good and is good for them.” They can’t go wrong ordering the turkey lasagna ($12). The meat is sautéed without oil; there’s plenty of zucchini and eggplant in the mix to make sure you eat your veggies; the light béchamel sauce that covers the top layer of noodles has “just a little touch” of butter; and Banouas leaves cheese out of the equation entirely.

Butcher Nathan Anda’s known for his pork. “But I’m a sucker for turkey,” he says. Anda was inspired to create his homemade rillette ($8 for 4 ounces) when he was brining turkeys for sandwich meat and wanted to do something with the legs. He cured the dark meat with orange zest, thyme, long pepper and brown sugar, and turned it into a smooth spread that’s healthier than you might think. “The majority of the fat in dark meat is unsaturated,” says Anda, who recommends eating his creation at room temperature on a warm whole-wheat loaf with sharp mustard.

PSYCHOLOGY

It’s Not Me. It’s You! Your aunt storms in on Thanksgiving and starts yelling about how terribly you’ve set the table for dinner. Are you mad? But what if you knew she’d been in a fender bender on the way over? According to research from Stanford University, you’d be more likely to brush off the rant if you knew that. In an experiment, subjects who looked at an angry face but were told the person had a bad day experienced fewer negative emotions.

OBESIT Y It may seem counterintuitive, but if you want to lose weight, try eating more. Researchers examined the eating habits of 250 people for a year and determined that normal-weight adults, including ones who’d lost weight and kept off the pounds, snacked more often than overweight people. The catch: The normalweight folks still consumed fewer calories and were more active. One theory about why a higher frequency of eating helps is that it staves off hunger, making you less likely to overdo it at meals.

JASON HORNICK

Just because you’re dining at a steak house doesn’t mean you have to get your moo on. Rather than rely on any old bird for his burger ($15), Sobel uses heritage turkey — an original breed with more flavorful meat than the typical modern turkey. He perks up the patty with sage, poultry spice, ground apricot and stuffing, and then grills it over a mesquite and oak fire. The burger’s served on a toasted whole-wheat roll smeared with garlic mashed potatoes and crowned with a spoonful of homemade cranberry sauce. “It’s like Thanksgiving on a bun,” Sobel says.

CREDIT UNION RESOURCE Advertisement

FIVE GOOD REASONS TO JOIN A CREDIT UNION Credit unions are not in business to turn a profit. They are member-owned not-for-profit institutions. This is one big difference between banks and credit unions, and it translates into a number of good reasons to become a member of a credit union.

1.

Excellent customer service: credit unions are interested in keeping you as a member, and in helping you reach your financial goals. When you succeed, the credit union succeeds.

2.

Keep more of your money: you will find higher savings rates for your savings account, certificates of deposit, and IRAs; lower interest rates for auto loans, mortgages and personal lines of credit; and credit cards with low or no annual fees and low interest rates.

3. 4.

Fewer fees: low cost or free checking with low or no minimum balance requirement.

Same services as a bank: direct deposit, ATMs, payroll deduction – but with a volunteer board of directors elected by the members.

5.

Additional services: many credit unions offer home buying education, financial counseling, group rates on life insurance, investment services, and other assistance to help you succeed financially. There are a number of ways you may be associated with a credit union. Check with your employer, fraternal organization, the branch of the military you served for, your trade association, or a community organization.

Force Be With You Last year, I saw a listing for the documentary “Positive Force: More Than a Witness,” which traces the history of the D.C. punk-activist collective. The DVD was advertised in a catalog for the radical publishing house PM Press, and the movie’s release seemed imminent. Then a Kickstarter.com link recently started making the social-media rounds, with director Robin Bell looking to raise $15,000 to complete the film in 2012. 8o 9^h_ijef^[h Bell has until Nov. 30 Fehj[h to meet his goal, or the project won’t be funded through the Kickstarter campaign. Positive Force (Positiveforcedc.org) started in 1985, using punk shows to raise money and awareness about local issues. (The above image from the film’s DVD cover is of a 1993 Fugazi benefit for Positive Force at the Sylvan Theater.) The volunteer collective — which was co-founded and is still organized by Mark Andersen, co-author of an incredible oral history of the D.C. scene titled “Dance of Days” — handles everything from free grocery deliveries for seniors to outreach programs for sex workers. The preview trailer for Bell’s documentary features a title card that says “25 years of punk politics in action.” He’ll have to update that, but Positive Force’s ideal remains constant. <_bc H[l_[m More than ever, we need a world where a pig can be romantically linked to a frog. A world where no one finds it odd that Jason Segel’s little brother is a puppet, and they share a room with twin beds and a taste for pastel leisure suits. “ T he Mupp e t s,” op en i ng Wednesday, marks a very welcome return for Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and the rest of Jim Henson’s creations after a 12-year big-screen absence. From start to finish, the movie is a healthy, dizzy dose of childlike bliss, the songs campy but catchy, the humor corny but clever, the cast — both human and Muppet — one of the most lovable gangs you’ll ever spend time with. Sure, the Muppets have long been a wholly owned subsidiary of big Hollywood, namely, the Walt Disney Co. But this is a gentle, loving rebirth, leaving intact the decency and goodness that have always been at the heart of the Muppets. Lifelong “Muppets” fan Segel, who co-wrote the movie with his “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” director Nicholas Stoller, stars as Gary, a small-town guy who heads with girlfriend Mary (Amy Adams) for a trip to Hollywood. Tagging along is Gary’s brother Walter, an endearing little puppet who’s the world’s biggest fan of all things Muppet. man (Chris Cooper) who schemes to raze the studio and drill for petroleum, Walter enlists Gary and Mary to reunite the Muppets to raise cash to buy the place back. In his big-screen debut, director James Bobin (“Flight of the Conchords”) establishes a nimble pace from the start and maintains it right through the closing credits. The story gleefully dashes from song-and-dance numbers to hilarious montages to the sort of precious asides that are a staple of the Muppets (which includes copious celebrity cameos). Wide-eyed with obvious reverence for the Muppets, Segel and particularly Adams deliver nicely on some of the movie’s original songs, which are cute little toe-tappers. And it’s worth the cost of a ticket just to see Academy Award winner Cooper cut loose with his own dastardly rap number. Classic Muppets tunes also are woven in, and for anyone who grew up on “The Muppet Show,” it’s a thrill — yes, thrill — to see those floppy puppets dance about and sing their theme song. A corporate-style monolith corners the market on holiday retail, cruelly displacing its outmoded workforce and crassly insisting that any individuals who fall through the cracks are part of the cost of business. But 99 percenters don’t need to start an Occupy North Pole movement over “Arthur Christmas,” (opening Wednesday), the animated comedy that shows how Santa Claus manages to deliver all those presents in a modern global market. This holiday treat has the spirit of Christmas at heart, spinning a snowflake-light tale with warmth, energy and goofy humor. The upbeat, lanky younger son of Santa Claus, Arthur (James McAvoy) desperately wants to contribute to the family business but is a clumsy bumbler assigned to answer children’s letters to the man in red. Instead, the glory goes to his dad (Jim Broadbent), the latest in a long line of Santas, who has become a dotty figurehead as older, bolder son Steve (Hugh Laurie) revamps the sleigh-and-reindeer method with a mechanized operation that

The news of a new album and tour comes as a bit of a surprise just five months after the death of longtime saxophonist Clarence Clemons. Many had speculated that the E Street Band had played its last show together, but that is clearly not the case. There is no word yet on whether Clemons will be replaced or whether the band will simply continue without a saxophone player. courtly language and historical pretense fool you: “Anonymous” is still a Roland Emmerich movie — a blessing when it comes to vigor and a curse when it comes to subtlety, proportion or sense. A .H. THE DESCENDANTS (R, 115 minutes) George Clooney doesn’t put a foot wrong except on purpose in “The Descendants,” a pitch-perfect movie that threads a tiny needle between comedy and devastating drama. Clooney’s Matt King is the wealthy descendant of Hawaiian royalty, who, as the movie opens, is watching his wife, Elizabeth, lie comatose in a hospital bed after suffering a near-fatal boating accident. A distant husband and father, Matt must find a way to bond with his daughters, 10-year-old Scottie (Amara Miller) and 17-year-old Alex (Shailene Woodley). “The Descendants” is an ode to emotional dissonance, wherein regret and antic humor can coexist and even share a drink; it’s a tricky tonal high-wire act that writer-director Alexander Payne pulls off with uncommon skill and aplomb. A.H. HAPPY FEET TWO (PG, 100 minutes) In “Happy Feet Two,” there’s precious little of what gave “Happy Feet” its incongruous, yet infectious charm: a tap-dancing penguin. The gotta-move protagonist of the first animated, Antarctica-set feature — a misfit young emperor penguin named Mumble (Elijah Wood) — returns for the sequel. Only this time he’s all grown up — and a lot less fun. In his place are a lot of other polar creatures vying for screen time and our attention. The biggest letdown is the absence of dancing. Mumble, the former hoofer, is now the father of a penguin chick named Erik (Ava Acres). He spends most of his time putting his foot down after Erik, who doesn’t like to dance, runs away from home, and Mumble is forced to go get him and bring him back, scolding him the entire way. So much for happy feet. M.O. IN TIME (PG-13, 110 minutes) Set in a dystopian future in which time is, quite literally, money, “In Time” engages with philosophy and politics in a way that few action movies do. In filmmaker Andrew Niccol’s invented universe, everyone has been genetically engineered to stop aging at 25. You’re given a year to live at that point, which will go up if you work hard. Here, the price of everything is measured by a clock, not a checkbook. As in the real world, there are the haves and the have-nots. The action is set in motion when Will comes into a lot of extra time. But Will gets more than a

[dj[hjW_dc[dj beeaekj new lease on life; he also learns the truth about how the unequal system works. It’s a political wake-up call for our hero, who becomes radicalized. M.O. JACK AND JILL (PG, 89 minutes) In “Jack and Jill,” a lowbrow drag comedy, Adam Sandler plays both Jack, a successful, attractive L.A. advertising director, and Jack’s identical twin sister, Jill, an overweight, abrasive harpy with a roomtemperature IQ. Like all Happy Madison productions, it cannot really be said to be good or bad, any more than dumping a bag of marbles onto a bathroom scale can be said to result in an accurate weight. It is what it is — something unruly, stupid and sort of funny, in the same way that passing gas is funny. There is a lot of passing gas in “Jack and Jill.” The unsurprisingly bon-mot-free script is by Steve Koren, Robert Smigel and Ben Zook. Why it took three of them to come up with the story, in which a Thanksgiving visit by Jill turns into an eight-week nightmare for Jack — and an 89-minute one for you — is anyone’s guess. M .O. LIKE CRAZY (PG-13, 88 minutes) The exhilaration of first love and the pain of its denouement burst forth with aching tenderness in “Like Crazy.” Felicity Jones and Anton Yelchin play Anna and Jacob, who meet when they’re college students and fall in love after Anna boldly leaves a note on Jacob’s windshield. “Like Crazy” then sends viewers along for the ecstatic ride as Anna and Jacob discover that they’re soul mates, with director Drake Doremus telling the story as a collection of vagrant moments of connection and intimacy. “Like Crazy” gives filmgoers an over-the-shoulder view of a relationship at just about every stage of its morphology, conveying the vicarious pleasure and pain of love and separation through characters eminently worth rooting for. A.H. MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE (R,

101 minutes) Elizabeth Olsen delivers an utterly transfixing turn as the title character of this chilling psychological thriller, in which a young woman named Martha joins a cult and is rechristened “Marcy May” by the group’s dangerously charismatic leader. Structured mostly in flashbacks while Martha seeks to reunite with her estranged sister Lucy, this is a story that’s about a cult only in

house spirit, offers no easy answers. A.H. MELANCHOLIA (R, 135 minutes) A masterwork of grandeur, millennial angst and high romantic style, “Melancholia” takes themes that have marked the best films of 2011 and spins them into a blast of cosmic sparkle dust. “Melancholia” begins in earnest with the late arrival of a bride and groom to their wedding party. The bride’s ambivalence comes

into florid expression at the reception, a lavish affair that writer-director Lars von Trier films virtually in real time, as the newly wed Justine and her groom, Michael, navigate their fragile new life as a couple. The setup has the makings of a bitterly funny dysfunctional-family comedy, but von Trier instead plays it for maximum nihilistic drama. The “Melan Continued on page 28

the most superficial sense. As Olsen’s alternately recessive, spontaneous, blunt and vulnerable turn suggests, it’s about a woman forging an identity in spite of the familial and pseudo-familial forces that never cease to exert their own destructive pulls. Just how Martha’s reunion will play out with Lucy takes on the contours of a horror film in “Martha Marcy May Marlene,” which, true to its art-

cholia” wedding seems to go on and on, with Justine’s skepticism finally taking a shockingly subversive turn. As von Trier’s ultimate wish-fulfillment fantasy, “Melancholia” is a broodingly downbeat

self-portrait but also the inspiring work of an artist of seemingly boundless imaginative power. A.H. PUSS IN BOOTS (PG, 90 minutes) The feature-length animated spin-off — a star turn for the popular “Shrek” supporting character voiced by Antonio Banderas — is almost shockingly good. The character is still something of a delusional Casanova, and the action is still set in the world

of fairy tales, but the story has been given a spicy spaghetti-western kick. “Puss in Boots” centers on Puss’ efforts to steal the goose that lays the golden eggs from a giant’s castle in the clouds. Assisting him in this adventure are his childhood pal Humpty Dumpty and rival cat burglar Kitty Softpaws, who is, naturally, Puss’ love interest. M.O. TOWER HEIST (PG-13, 105 minutes) Ben

Stiller plays Josh Kovacs, the general manager of the Tower, a posh apartment complex. Overseeing a motley staff, Josh proudly caters to every passing whim of his elite clientele, the richest of whom is penthouse dweller Arthur Shaw. He appears genial, but when the staff pensions Josh invested with Shaw disappear like the dregs of last night’s single malt, the game is afoot. As enjoyable as the

individual performances are, they don’t always emulsify into a smoothly integrated whole. But that matters little in a movie that derives most of its cachet from how uncannily it chimes with the times. The “Tower Heist” heroes often seem lifted directly from the Central Casting handbook, their antics preposterous enough to beggar belief, but they arrive at just the right moment. They’re the 99 percent. A.H. THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN — PART 1 (PG-13, 117 minutes) Recent high school graduate Bella Swan grows up a lot in “Breaking Dawn — Part 1,” becoming a bride, a potential mother and perhaps something stranger. Yet the “Twilight Saga” hasn’t matured along with its heroine. In fact, the latest movie regresses a bit, delivering more filler, less feeling and crummier CGI than last year’s “Eclipse.” As the trailer (and the book) have already revealed, the drama this time is principally obstetric. In the movie’s bland first half, Bella (Kristen Stewart) prepares for woodland nuptials with pasty vampire dreamboat Edward (Robert Pattinson). We do see a bloody Edward-ian flashback and an angry run through the Washington-state forest by wolfman Jacob (Taylor Lautner), the excluded member of the tale’s menagerie a trois. But much of the action involves shoes, dresses and tearful, happy-sad chats with Mom and Dad. MARK JENKINS A VERY HAROLD AND KUMAR 3D CHRISTMAS (R, 90 minutes) There’s so much on-screen drug use that you get a kind of contact high just from watching this film. It’s a decent but not amazing buzz. When we first catch up with our protagonists — former roommates and BFFs Harold (John Cho) and Kumar (Kal Penn) — the two have gone their separate ways. Harold, whose friends now call him “Harry,” is a married banker living in the suburbs. Kumar, having been thrown out of medical school, is still living in the pair’s dumpy old apartment. Through a complex chain of events, the two find themselves again thrown together in a series of silly misadventures, this time revolving around the search for a Christmas tree. The subplot has to do with estranged friends’ reconciling and growing up — but not too much. The laughs are, for the most part, as lowbrow as they come. M.O.
