local Report urges expensive changes to bus, rail lines to better unify region TRANSPORTATION An alliance of the region’s top chief executives is urging ambitious, costly steps to improve commuter rail, bus networks and other transportation systems to reduce chronic traffic congestion and bind together the “super region” stretching from Baltimore to Richmond. In a report released Monday after 16 months of study, the Greater Washington Partnership says that residents should be able to hop on a train in the morning in D.C., Baltimore or Richmond, attend a meeting in one of the other cities

Some lawmakers seek legalized sports betting
and be back for lunch. Among the recommendations, it wants more dedicated bus lanes, coordinated traffic signals, bike trails, variable tolling on highways and possibly requiring drivers to pay a fee to enter downtown Washington. The 40-page “Capital Region Blueprint for Regional Mobility” is likely to shape discussions about how to fix the trafficclogged roads that are one of the biggest headaches — and barriers to economic growth — in the corridor along Interstate 95. In general, the report leans toward greater reliance on public transit and technological innovations to reduce traffic, rather than building more highways. But top priorities include

adding tolled express lanes to the Capital Beltway, Interstate 270 and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway in Maryland, similar
to those in Virginia. The report also says it’s vital to expand the Capital Beltway’s American Legion Bridge across the Potomac, as well as the 114-year-old Long Bridge for rail traffic between the District and Arlington. The price is high. The study foresees additional costs of $7 billion a year through 2045, on top of already planned spending of $12.3 billion a year. That works out to an extra $686 a year for each of the region’s 10.2 million residents. The alternative is bleak, according to the study. Without such changes, by 2040 residents in the super region will spend half their travel time stuck in traffic, up from a third today.

Some people were stuck on an Amtrak train, above, for more than five hours. The Bostonbound Acela had left D.C. when debris caused damage to the pantograph that connects the train to the overhead power line in Queens, N.Y. Passengers complained that the toilets didn’t flush throughout the delay.

Some state lawmakers in Virginia say they’re drafting legislation to allow sports betting in the state. The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported the proposals follow a Supreme Court ruling in May that allows states to legalize and regulate wagering on sports. Democratic state Sen. Chap Petersen said he’ll file a bill to legalize betting on professional sports. Betting on college sports wouldn’t be allowed. (AP)

The tree came via truck more than 3,000 miles from the Willamette National Forest, in the area of Blue River, Ore. It will be lighted at 5 p.m. Dec. 5. It was chosen in August by the architect of the Capitol and the U.S. Forest Service. The tree was harvested in early November before making the trek across the country.

Rally suspect may argue self-defense CHARLOTTESVILLE An Ohio man charged with killing a woman during a white nationalist rally in Virginia plans to argue that he believed he was acting in self-defense when he drove his car into a crowd of counter-protesters. A lawyer for James Alex Fields Jr. offered a glimpse of the defense strategy as jury selection began Monday in Charlottesville, 15 months after this quiet Virginia city became a flash point for race relations in the U.S. The “Unite the Right” rally on Aug. 12, 2017, drew hundreds of white nationalists to Charlottesville, where officials planned to remove a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. Hundreds more showed up to protest against the white nationalists. The two sides began brawling
before the rally got underway. Later, 32-year-old Heather Heyer was killed when a car authorities Fields say was driven by Fields plowed into a crowd. Fields’ attorney, John Hill, told a group of prospective jurors Monday the jury will hear evidence that Fields “thought he was acting in self-defense.” During jury selection Monday, Fields, 21, glanced several times at the crowd of prospective jurors in the courtroom and answered, “Yes, sir” when asked questions by Judge Richard Moore. Moore acknowledged the process is “slow going.” “We’re trying to be as careful as we can for both sides of the case,” Moore said. DENISE LAVOIE (AP)

Metro rolls out bus ads METROBUS As the Route 31 bus made its way down 23rd Street Northwest last Tuesday, “Stop requested” announcements periodically came over the bus’s public address system, said with such monotony that they fit the mood of a vehicle crawling along in afternoon traffic. But suddenly a cheery voice spoke up with a jolt. “Don’t miss Mom’s home cooking this holiday season,” it said. “Book your ticket with megabus.com and you’ll be home in time for turkey. Happy Holidays!” There are still some who lament the soft jazz being piped into some Metro stations. Now comes this for your listening pleasure: With Metro needing to make more money, the agency has begun playing ads on buses. The 15-second Megabus ad is the only one to air since the program’s Nov. 1 soft launch. But more advertisers are expected to follow. Eventually, Metro rail riders could hear ads too, said Russ Gottesman, founder of CommuterAds, the Dayton, Ohio-based company that has contracted with Metro to provide the ads. Metro says the contract guarantees the cash-strapped agency will get at least $250,000 a year in ad revenue, and Gottesman says new technology that plays ads based on the location of a bus will provide ads that riders will actually want to hear, such as ones for deals at nearby stores. But among riders last week, the immediate reaction wasn’t positive. As Alan Shan got off the 31 bus carrying bags of groceries, he complained that he sees ads whenever he turns on his TV. He hears ads when he turns on the radio. And now he has to hear ads while sitting on the bus.
J. LAWLER DUGGAN (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)
New partnership has riders hearing recorded commercials en route — like it or not
Falling asleep may soon be the only way to avoid ads on Metrobuses.
“When I’m on the bus, I want to be in my head,” he said. “There’s enough advertising all over America.” In Cleveland and Atlanta, where Gottesman’s company has already been running ads on buses (in Cleveland, they’re also appearing on trains), officials say riders grumbled a bit at first but eventually got used to them. The Megabus ad is being played on nearly all Metro buses at 7:18 a.m. and 5:18 p.m. each day, regardless of where the buses are. But the company is also using CommuterAds’ geolocation software, which Gottesman said allows advertisers to strategically target “a captive audience.” The ad plays in buses on the 31, 32 and 36 routes whenever
they reach 23rd and G streets Northwest, near George Washington University. It also plays in the route D1, D2 and D6 buses at 35th and Q streets Northwest, near Georgetown University. Megabus didn’t return an email seeking comment, but Gottesman said locations near the universities were chosen because the company wants to target college students trying to find a cheap way to get home for the holidays. As advertisers decide they want to reach riders at other locations, other routes will get ads. Next year, CommuterAds plans to let businesses go online and schedule ads to play on buses as they pass by their stores. Gottesman said the bus ads
Prosecutors: Man accused in 1995 Va. sex assaults told wife he was a serial offender
will allow advertisers to send messages to riders right when they might find them useful. For example, riders with many of the 14 transit agencies already working with CommuterAds are hearing about morning coffee deals as their bus approaches one of the advertisers’ stores. In largely Somali neighborhoods of Champaign, Ill., buses play ads in Somali for the University of Illinois-Champaign, which wants to reach out to people in that ethnic group. Gottesman said he got the idea for the business while taking a train home after a Chicago White Sox game. Realizing he was packed in with hundreds of hungry fans, he saw an opportunity for restaurants along the route. “When they call out the Chinatown stop, why not have an advertisement for dim sum?” he said. But do riders really want to be subjected to advertising when they’re just trying to get home? “The volume doesn’t blare,” said Steve Bitto, marketing director for the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority. “It’s not like you jump out of your seat because all of a sudden there’s an ad for McDonald’s.” It also helps that many of the ads offer riders a deal, said Jennifer Jinadu-Wright, marketing director for the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, which runs ads on buses. Still, when rider Jennifer Rhorer heard the Megabus ad for the first time one recent morning, she took to Twitter to voice her dismay. “[Why] am I hearing ads on the bus? When did this bulls--- start,” her tweet said. In a direct message, she added, “Not a fan of hearing ads when you can’t escape them.” KERY MURAKAMI (EXPRESS)

Why no train arrival times at Shady Grove? Q. Red Line commuter Jared Sorhaindo wanted to know why the sign at the Shady Grove station often doesn’t say when the next train is coming. “I find it incredibly frustrating,” he told us. A. Operating the arrival time signs is more complicated at end-of-the-line stations, Metro spokeswoman Sherri Ly explained. That’s because Metro uses an algorithm to predict when the next train will come. At other stations, the system can track the arriving train and predict when it should arrive. But at the ends of lines, trains could be coming from the rail yard or arriving from the other direction and turning around. “If the system doesn’t have enough information to make a reliable prediction, it won’t,” Ly said. “The logic here is that it is better to make no prediction than a bad prediction.” She also noted another end-of-the-line peculiarity: a “-” sign displaying for the number of cars on a train. That’s because “the system is unable to determine when the next train on the platform is getting ready to depart,” Metro’s website explains. “This value will change to its correct numeric value as soon as the system detects the number of cars of the train servicing the trip.” KERY MURAKAMI

Ukraine invokes martial law State of emergency will affect 10 regions beginning Wednesday

They also contained vaguely worded steps such as “strengthening” anti-terrorism measures and “information security” that could curtail certain rights and freedoms. Poroshenko’s critics reacted to his call for martial law with suspicion, wondering why Sunday’s incident merited such a response. KIEV, UKRAINE Ukraine’s parliament voted Monday to impose martial law in parts of the country to fight what its president called “growing aggression” from Moscow after a weekend naval confrontation off the disputed Crimean Peninsula in which Russia fired on and seized three Ukrainian vessels amid renewed tensions between the neighbors. Russia and Ukraine blamed each other in the Black Sea dispute that further ratcheted up tensions that go back to when Moscow annexed Crimea in 2014 and threw its weight behind separatists in eastern Ukraine. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko asked lawmakers in Kiev to institute martial law, something the country did not do even during the worst of the fighting in the east that killed about 10,000 people. After a five-hour debate, parliament overwhelmingly approved his proposal, voting to impose martial law for 30 days starting Wednesday morning in 10 of Ukraine’s 27 regions — those bordering Russia, Belarus and Moldova’s pro-Moscow breakaway republic of TransDniester. The capital of Kiev will not be under martial law. Poroshenko said it was necessary because of intelligence about “a highly serious threat of a ground operation against

scheduled for March. Poroshenko’s call also outraged far-right groups i n Ukraine that have advocated severing diplomatic ties with Russia. Hundreds of protesters from the National Corps party
accused the president of using martial law to his own ends. But Poroshenko insisted that what happened in the Kerch Strait between Crimea and the Russian mainland “was no accident.” At a U.N. Security Council meeting, U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley urged Russia to “immediately cease its unlawful conduct” in the Black Sea. The European Union and NATO called for restraint from both sides. NATO said Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg expressed the U.S.-led military alliance’s “full support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, including its full navigational rights in its territorial waters under international law.” NATALIYA VASILYEVA AND EFREM LUKATSKY (AP)
AUTISM PREVALENCE IN U.S. KIDS
The estimated proportion of American children who have autism spectrum disorder, according to a study published Monday in the journal Pediatrics. The study used the 2016 National Survey of Children’s Health, which collected data from parents of more than 50,000 kids in the U.S. The 2.5 percent estimate represents about 1.3 million children ages 3 to 17. A report released earlier this year by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention based on 2014 data estimated around 1.7 percent of U.S. kids had the condition, CNN reported. POLITICS Prosecutors with special counsel Robert Mueller said Monday that Paul Manafort breached his plea agreement by lying repeatedly to the FBI and the special counsel’s office as they questioned him in the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. Manafort denies doing so, and both sides agree that sentencing should be set immediately. The apparent collapse of Manafort’s cooperation agreement is the latest stunning turnaround in his case, exposing the longtime Republican consultant to more than a decade behind bars after he pleaded guilty in September on charges of cheating the Internal Revenue Service, violating foreign lobbying laws and attempting to obstruct justice. The court filing indicated Mueller’s team also had suffered a potential setback. Manafort has potential knowledge of several key events relevant to the probe during his tenure with Trump’s campaign from March to August 2016, including the Republican National Convention and a Trump Tower meeting attended by a Russian lawyer. Prosecutors did not elaborate on areas where they contend Manafort lied. Attorneys for Manafort wrote in the joint filing that he “has provided information to the government in an effort to live up to his cooperation obligations.” SPENCER S. GM announces major layoffs
General Motors plants in Detroit; Oshawa, Ontario; Lordstown, Ohio; Warren, Mich.; and White Marsh, Md., are up for possible closure.
EDUARDO LIMA (AP)
BUSINESS General Motors will cut up to 14,000 workers in North America and put five plants up for possible closure as it abandons many of its car models and restructures to focus more on autonomous and electric vehicles, the automaker announced Monday. The reductions could amount to as much as 8 percent of GM’s global workforce of 180,000 employees. The restructuring reflects changing North American auto markets as manufacturers continue to shift away from cars toward SUVs and trucks. In October, almost 65 percent of new vehicles sold in the U.S. were trucks or SUVs. GM is shedding cars largely because it doesn’t make money on them, Citi analyst Itay Michaeli wrote in a note to investors. The reduction includes about 8,000 white-collar employees, or 15 percent of GM’s North American white-collar workforce. Some will take buyouts while others will be laid off. At the factories, around 3,300 blue-collar workers could lose jobs in the U.S. and another 2,600 in Canada, but some U.S. workers could transfer to truck or SUV factories that are increasing production. Most of the factories to be affected by GM’s restructuring build cars that will not be sold in the U.S. after next year. The cuts mark GM’s first

major downsizing since shedding thousands of jobs in the Great Recession. The company also said it will stop operating two additional factories outside North America by the end of next year, in addition to a previously announced plant closure in Gunsan, South Korea. GM’s pre-emptive strike to get leaner before the next downturn
likely will be followed by Ford Motor Co., which has said it is restructuring and will lay off an unspecified number of whitecollar workers. The layoffs come amid the backdrop of a trade war among the U.S., China and Europe that likely will lead to higher prices for imported vehicles and those exported from the U.S.
General Motors CEO Mary Barra said the company faces challenges from tariffs but she did not directly link the layoffs to them. GM doesn’t foresee an economic downturn and is making the cuts “to get in front of it while the company is strong and while the economy is strong,” Barra told reporters. Factories that could be closed include assembly plants in Detroit and Oshawa, Ontario, and Lordstown, Ohio, as well as transmission plants in Warren, Mich., and White Marsh, Md. The announcement worried GM workers. “I don’t know how I’m going to feed my family,” Matt Smith, a worker at the Ontario factory, said Monday. “It’s hard. It’s horrible.” Smith’s wife also works at the plant. The couple have an 11-month-old at home. President Trump, who has made bringing back auto jobs a big part of his appeal to Ohio and other Great Lakes states that are crucial to his re-election, said his administration and lawmakers are exerting “a lot of pressure” on GM. Trump said he was being tough on Barra. He said he told the company that the U.S. has done a lot for GM and that if its cars aren’t selling, the company needs to produce ones that will. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, said in a statement the move will be disastrous for the region around Youngstown, Ohio, east of Cleveland, where GM is one of the area’s few remaining industrial anchors. Dejected at the border
Migrants fear their chance at asylum has been spoiled after clash with U.S. agents
NASA’s InSight spacecraft lands safely on Mars
arrested on the California side. He said the Border Patrol’s useof-force policy allows agents to use tear gas and other nonlethal methods, but that the incident would be reviewed. “As the events unfolded, quick, decisive and effective action prevented an extremely dangerous situation,” McAleenan said. The clash led U.S. authorities to shut down the nation’s busiest border crossing at San Ysidro, Calif., for several hours Sunday. “Mexico should move the flag waving Migrants, many of whom are stone cold criminals, back to their countries,” Trump tweeted Monday. “Do it by plane, do it by bus, do it anyway you want, but they are NOT coming into the U.S.A. We will close the Border permanently if need be. Congress, fund the WALL!” Trump has repeatedly suggested without evidence that the migrant caravans are full of hardened criminals, but they appear to be mostly poor people with few belongings fleeing poverty and gang violence.
SCIENCE For the eighth time ever, humanity has achieved one of the toughest tasks in the solar system: landing a spacecraft on Mars. The InSight lander, operated by NASA and built by scientists in the United States, France and Germany, touched down on the Red Planet just before 3 p.m. Eastern on Monday. It will operate there for the next two Earth years, deploying a seismometer, a heat sensor and radio antennas. Scientists hope that InSight will uncover signs of tectonic activity and clues about the planet’s past. Those findings could illuminate how Mars became the desolate desert world we see today. Mission control at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., erupted in laughter, applause and tears when the lander touched down. Scientists call the stretch of time from when a spacecraft hits the Martian atmosphere to the second it touches down “the seven minutes of terror.” More than half of all missions don’t make it safely to the surface. Because it takes more than eight minutes for light signals to travel 100 million miles to Earth, scientists have no control over the process. All they can do is wait. “This thing has a lot more to do,” said engineer Rob Grover. “But just getting to the surface of Mars is no mean feat.” SARAH

IMMIGRATION A chaotic border clash with choking tear gas fired by U.S. agents left Central American migrants sullen and dejected, with some opting Monday to leave and others worrying the incident may have spoiled their chances at asylum. Mexican security forces stepped up their presence at a Tijuana sports complex where thousands from the migrant caravan have been sheltered, apparently seeking to avoid a repeat of Sunday’s ugly scene. Police blocked the migrants from walking toward the border in the morning, though later on they allowed them to move about freely. Isauro Mejia, 46, from Cortes, Honduras, went looking for a cup of coffee to shake the morning chill following another night sleeping outside. Before, he had hoped to be able to press an asylum claim, but now he wasn’t so sure. “The way things went yesterday ... I think there is no chance,” Mejia said. “With the difficulty that has presented itself because of yesterday’s incidents ... that’s further away.” Migrants hoping to apply for asylum in the U.S. must put their names on a waiting list that already had some 3,000 people on it before the caravan arrived in Tijuana. With U.S. officials processing fewer than 100 claims a day, the wait time for the recent arrivals stands to take months. That has instilled a sense of desperation among many after their grueling trek from Central America. Sunday’s incident began after hundreds marched to the border to try to call attention to their plight. Some attempted to get through fencing and wire separating the countries, prompting volleys of stinging gas. Cindy Martinez of San Vicente,
A migrant woman carries a boy Monday as Mexican police patrol a Tijuana sports complex that is serving as a shelter.
Trump says U.S. agents ‘had to use’ tear gas at the border President Trump on Monday defended the use of tear gas by U.S. agents against Central American migrants at the San Ysidro border crossing, saying that authorities “had to use” the chemical agent in Sunday’s chaos and dismissing reports that children were among those affected. “They had to use [it] because they were being rushed by some very tough people,” he told reporters. “… Here’s the bottom line: Nobody’s coming into our country unless they come in legally.” (THE WASHINGTON POST)
El Salvador, said she had been about to cross the concertina wire to the U.S. side when the tear gas was launched. She estimated about 20 people had already passed in front of her, and parents begged agents not to unleash the gas because there were young children present. “I see it as impossible for them to want to give us asylum,” she said. “Because of the words that President Donald Trump has said, I think this is impossible.” Martinez, 28, said she was
now considering getting work in Tijuana. Mexico’s National Migration Institute reported that 98 migrants were being deported after trying to breach the U.S. border. The country’s Interior Department said about 500 people attempted to rush the border, while U.S. authorities put the number at 1,000. U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan said 69 migrants who tried to cross illegally were

SCIENCE Scientists and bioethics experts reacted with shock, anger and alarm Monday to a Chinese researcher’s claim that he helped make the world’s first genetically edited babies. He Jiankui of Southern University of Science and Technology of China said he altered the DNA of twin girls born earlier this month to try to help them resist possible future infection with the AIDS virus. There is no independent confirmation of what He says he did, and it has not been published in a journal where other experts could review it. He revealed it Monday in Hong Kong, where a gene-editing conference is underway. Reaction to the claim was swift: More than 100 scientists signed a petition calling for greater oversight on gene-editing experiments. The university where He is based said it will hire experts to investigate, saying the work “seriously violated academic ethics and standards. Pivotal for playoff push
Victories by the Vikings and Seahawks on Sunday helped create a logjam in the NFC wild-card race. As the fifth seed, Minnesota
(6-4-1) currently holds the first wild card, while the No. 6 Redskins (6-5) hold the second. Washington’s conference record gives it the tiebreaker over the Seahawks (6-5), and it beat the Panthers (6-5) head-to-head. Here is a look at eight players who could have

His ability to create fourth-quarter comebacks helped the Seahawks go 3-2 in a five-game stretch in which their defense faced Matthew Stafford, Philip Rivers, Aaron Rodgers, Jared Goff and Cam Newton. The schedule gives the Seahawks a great chance for a wild card: Four of their last five games are at home, and they face the 49ers twice and Cardinals once.
The NFL’s hottest quarterback had led the Colts from 1-5 to 6-5, including a comeback win Sunday over Miami. In his last five games, he has 16 TD passes and has been sacked once. The Colts (6-5) are now the AFC’s seventh seed, trailing the No. 6 Ravens (6-5) based on a conference tiebreaker. The Colts’ remaining opponents include the Jaguars, Giants and Titans.
His acquisition from Oakland has eased the heat on Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott, turning the Cowboys (6-5) from a team that seemed likely to finish 7-9 or 8-8 into the NFC East favorite. In the last three weeks, all wins, he has helped the offense average 26.6 points, an increase of almost a touchdown. The Cowboys host the Saints on Thursday and the Eagles 10 days later.
He will be 37 on Dec. 8 but might be having his best year (26 TDs, six picks). He completed his first 25 throws Sunday in a 45-10 rout of the Cardinals. The Chargers (8-3) are all but locked in as the AFC’s fifth seed, even with trips to Pittsburgh, K.C. and Denver still on tap. But they’ll need Rivers more than ever the next couple of week because of RB Melvin Gordon’s knee injury.

Joe Flacco
Vikings quarterback
He was great in Sunday night’s 24-17 win over the Packers, outdueling Aaron Rodgers by throwing for 342 yards and three TDs, and all but knocking Green Bay (4-6-1) out of the playoff mix. That’s what the Vikings need, as their oncedominant defense has struggled against some of the top offenses this season. Their next two games are at New England and Seattle.
With fill-in QB Colt McCoy able to do only so much, the Redskins must rely on a 33-year-old back to make the playoffs. Their schedule helps with two games against the Eagles bracketed around a home game against the Giants and trips to Jacksonville and Tennessee. But in the past four games, Peterson has rushed for just 171 yards on 56 carries, an average of 3.05 yards.

Ravens quarterback
Statistically, this has been his season: He’s completing 69.6 percent of his passes and has 22 TD passes with only seven interceptions under new coordinator Norv Turner. Sunday’s loss to Seattle provided a warning sign as the Panthers converted just three of seven red-zone trips into touchdowns. Carolina’s defense is sub-par, so much depends on Newton.
He has missed the past two games with a hip injury. Backup Lamar Jackson got two wins, but they came against the inept defenses of the Bengals and Raiders. With road games against Atlanta and K.C. up next, the Ravens will need more than a first-year running quarterback to reach the playoffs. That means their best chances likely lie with Flacco, but there is no timetable for his return.
Bengals QB Andy Dalton (thumb) out for season
When Bryce Harper hangs up his cleats, he might have a second career as a college football analyst. The free agent outfielder was the guest picker on ESPN’s “College Gameday” ahead of Saturday’s clash between Ohio State and Michigan in Columbus, and he was the only member of the fourman panel to correctly pick the Buckeyes to upset the Wolverines. The Buckeyes rolled 62-39, which thrilled Harper and his wife, Kayla, who played soccer at Ohio State. Harper nailed 11 of his 13 picks, which were made straight up, not against the spread. Four of the five underdogs he picked — including Minnesota over Wisconsin and Syracuse over Boston College — were winners. SCOTT ALLEN (TWP)

The Braves on Monday agreed to one-year contracts with third baseman Josh Donaldson and catcher Brian McCann. Donaldson’s deal is for $23 million, a source said. McCann, a former seven-time All-Star for Atlanta, got $2 million to play near his home. Donaldson, 32, was limited by injury and played just 52 games for the Blue Jays and Indians last year. McCann, 34, was a backup for the Astros. Former Braves catcher Kurt Suzuki joined the Nationals last week. (AP)
The Jaguars on Monday fired offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett and benched quarterback Blake Bortles a day after the team’s seventh consecutive loss. Coach Doug Marrone promoted quarterback Cody Kessler and quarterbacks coach Scott Milanovich, a former head coach in the CFL. Kessler, 25, lost all eight starts for Cleveland in 2016. The Jaguars (3-8) are 28th in the league in scoring at 17.9 points per game. They host the Colts on Sunday. (AP)
Officials in Florida were investigating a social media post that showed the face of Willie Taggart, the first black head football coach at Florida State University, superimposed over the body of a black man hanging from a tree. The person who posted the message was fired from his job at Hilton Grand Vacations of Orlando, Fla., the company said Monday. Taggart was hired last December, and FSU (5-7) just completed its first losing season since 1976. (EXPRESS)

Williams cleared after brief scare Redskins feared he had a bruised liver in Dallas, but left tackle was OK REDSKINS Redskins left tackle Trent Williams practiced Monday and has been fully cleared after being taken to a hospital in an ambulance after the game at Dallas on Thanksgiving. Williams said the medical staff was worried that he had suffered a bruised liver in the 31-23 loss, but that wasn’t the case. He was diagnosed with a bruised rib. “I was a tad bit dehydrated, so I was a little lightheaded and stuff,” Williams said. “They just wanted to be safe [rather] than sorry.” Williams returned after missing three games because of surgery on his right thumb. He is wearing a cast that prevents him from grabbing while blocking. “That’s just the life I’ve got to live for the next few weeks,” Williams said. Running back Chris Thompson was back at practice as he continues to deal with pain stemming from his fractured ribs. He said he hopes to be ready for the next game, Monday night in Philadelphia. He hasn’t played since Oct. 28. Thompson said the issue is

pain management, because there is no real way to rehab broken ribs. The pain is fairly intense for several hours after a workout, he said, but it has gotten better. “I’m still having a little trouble sleeping,” he said. “Hard to laugh. It hurts to cough, sneeze. Everything like that is all painful.” The workout Monday gave Colt McCoy his first opportunity to practice as the No. 1 quarterback. He hadn’t done that this season because Alex Smith threw all the passes to the first-team offense in practices and the Redskins had only walk-throughs in the two days before they flew to Dallas. Whole winter squashes, including the skin and seeds, boast many nutritional benefits.
STUDIES SHOW ...
Season for squash
Aspirin to cut ovarian cancer risk?
TOM MCCORKLE (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)
These winter fruits are not all equal — they often differ in nutritional makeup
NUTRITION Fall is here, with its delicious foods and flavors. Cinnamon, apple varieties, Brussels sprouts, beets, potatoes, turnips and parsnips will be abundant on tables and trending in recipes. And the star of many a produce stand will be a colorful assortment of winter squash — including butternut, acorn, delicata and turban. Though more varieties of winter squash are becoming more widely available, there are facts about these gourds that many cooks and diners don’t know, and that should be taken into consideration when preparing and consuming winter squash. While most people consider it a vegetable, a squash is botanically a fruit, because it produces seeds. Summer squash, despite the name, is generally available year-round; varieties include zucchini, yellow, pattypan and
crookneck. Common winter squash, such as butternut and spaghetti, are also available year-round, but other varieties typically peak in November and December. With summer squash, and some winter squash, the entire plant can be eaten. Often, cooks and diners assume everything about winter squash is healthy because we think of it as a vegetable. Although there are many nutritional benefits to winter squash, such as vitamins A and C and fiber, some varieties differ from vegetables such as greens, broccoli and even from summer squashes in an important way: These winter squashes, along with corn, potatoes and peas, are starchy vegetables. That means that, calorically, many are more similar to grains than to vegetables, and their carbohydrate content can be much higher than
A closer look at squash Here are some of the more starchy winter squash varieties: Acorn: Their shape can make for a fun meal because they can act as a bowl; roast and fill with other veggies and/or protein. Butternut: The traditional choice for soups. Instead of adding cream and sugar, use broth. Pumpkin: A favorite for carving and, of course, pies, pumpkin can also be made into yummy soups. This is also an excellent choice for enjoying the seeds. The following varieties are lower in calories and carbohydrates: Kabocha: You can eat the skin and get extra fiber with this variety. Spaghetti: A favorite to substitute for pasta. It’s low in calories and carbs. Spaghetti squash also has more fiber and nutrients than pastas made from refined flours. J.B.

vegetables. Butternut, acorn and pumpkin squash are calorically similar to a starch, for example, while spaghetti and kabocha are calorically closer to a vegetable. For example, a cup of steamed broccoli has 25 calories and 5 grams of carbohydrates, and a cup of spaghetti squash has 30 calories and 7 grams of carbs. A cup of steamed butternut squash, however, has 85 calories and 20 grams of carbohydrates. It’s also important to pay attention to how squashes are cooked. Avoid the recipes that load them with butter and brown sugar; those add calories and negate some of the nutritional benefits. Instead, steam or roast (roasting will naturally sweeten squash), and season with cinnamon, pepper and sage. Also consider taking advantage of the fiber by using varieties with edible skin.
A study published in JAMA Oncology last month found that women who had been recently taking lowdose (or baby) aspirin at least twice a week were 23 percent less likely to develop ovarian cancer than nonusers or past users. An earlier study had found that neardaily aspirin use could reduce ovarian cancer risk by 10 percent. Interestingly, in the new study, use of standarddose aspirin didn’t appear to affect ovarian cancer risk. The differing results and possibility of statistical anomalies raise questions that will need to be explored in future research. But because aspirin is known to lower inflammation, study authors believe their results bolster the theory that inflammation is a culprit in ovarian cancer. CARRIE DENNETT (TWP)

Why can’t I have a baby AND a job?! BEN CLAASSEN III (FOR EXPRESS)
Q. I am newly pregnant and my mother has commented
about how she expects I will stop working when the baby comes. She’s implied that because my partner makes a good living, and so much more than me, that I would not “need to work. I am surprised she feels this way. She has always worked and I think it’s hypocritical of her. Help this not drive a wedge between us.
I can imagine this feels like a slap in the face, but I also think it presents an opportunity. Raising a child is a master class in learning how to be judged, disagreed with and even insulted. (And that’s not even counting what will come from your kid!) But since this
is your mother, not the cashier at Target, it’s important that you flex your communication muscles and tell her how this has affected you. Let her know your surprise and discomfort with her assumptions, and that you will do what’s right for you. Then get specific about
how you both can have better empathy and communication when viewpoints differ. Because she can have all the expectations she wants, but it is your life, and if she conveys her expectations in ways that hurt you, she needs to know about the damage.

You mention the tough characteristics of your partner, but what’s the nature of the toughness? Their very being? Relationships take work, but that work shouldn’t become constant angst.
Well, there’s being different people, and then there’s being a poor match. MUSIC Should you choose to enlist in a pop diva’s stan army, your duties will be endless. You must feign enthusiasm for her most obscure remixes and start feuds with the fan bases of other divas over petty or imagined slights. And sometimes, you flex. Mariah Carey’s fans, known collectively as the Lambily, recently sent “Glitter” to the top of the iTunes chart, the result of a viral #JusticeForGlitter campaign. Carey, making the press rounds to promote her new album, “CauCau tion,” seemed underwhelmed b by
the soundtrack’s reemergence. After all, “Glitter” — released on Sept. 11, 2001, and a companion piece to a panned film that also starred Carey — was supposed to kick off her second act. After “Glitter” tanked, she struggled. But in the 17 years post“Glitter,” despite marrying, birthing twins and divorcing, Carey has publicly remained almost exactly, comfortingly the same. She is still a tottering presence in Lycra and platform heels. She still has the personal life of a plucky Lifetime TV movie heroine. She is right where you left her. “Caution,” released Nov. 16, is on track to be Carey’s biggest hit in years. It’s not an undeniable work of art (it’s pretty good, though), but it comes at just
the right time: Everyone loves Mariah Carey in November. We’ve returned to her for the same reason people watch reruns of “The West Wing”: because we miss the people we imagined we were and the harmless things we used to like. “Caution” acknowledges, and only slightly panders to, this hunger for ’90s nostalgia. It avoids things Carey may no longer be able to do (skyward-stretching, melismatic ballads), or want to do (bangers) but otherwise retraces recognizable patterns. The record opening “GTFO” is Beyonce’s “Irreplaceable” reimagined for 1 Percenters. Instead of leaving her boyfriend’s things at the curb, Carey offers to call his valet. “A No No” (“Off with your head/ Now slither out the door”) might be about Stella Bulochnikov, Carey’s allegedly overbearing former manager, under whose influence she participated in a disturbingly off-brand reality show and who later sued Carey for sexual harassment. Bulochnikov is almost certainly immortalized in “Portrait,” the closing piano ballad. “Portrait” has everything: arch wordplay, childhood nostalgia, pointed insults, tremulous bravery (“Somewhat desensitized/ Still the same hopeful child/ … Pushing past the parasites/ Down but not demoralized”), and that’s just in one verse. For her Lambily, it’s a late-period Mimi highlight reel. For more casual fans, who begin to remember Carey’s existence when she pops up on their postThanksgiving holiday playlists, it’s a necessary reminder of what they’ve missed. 1941-2018 Italian filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci, who won Oscars for “The Last Emperor” and whose erotic drama “Last Tango in Paris” enthralled and shocked the world, died Monday at 77. “He will be remembered among the greatest in Italian and world film,” said a statement by the Venice Film Festival, which awarded Bertolucci a lifetime achievement award in 2007. Bertolucci’s movies often explored the sexual relations among characters stuck in a psychological crisis, as in “Last Tango,” which was banned in his own Italy for over a decade. The self-professed Marxist also did not shy away from politics and ideology, as in “The Conformist,” which some critics consider Bertolucci’s masterpiece. Despite working with A-list American and international stars, Bertolucci always defended his own filmmaking style against what he said was the pressure of the U.S. film industry. He maintained critical success for most
of his career, weathering the controversies that his sexually provocative work would stir and some commercial flops. He was honored for lifetime achievement at the Cannes film festival in 2011, when he was already wheelchair-bound. Bertolucci’s movies also bore the imprint of the director’s own experiences in psychoanalysis. He always said that making films was his way of communicating. “Maybe I’m an idealist, but I still think of the movie theater as a cathedral where we all go together to dream the dream together,” he said upon receiving an award from the Directors Guild of America for his 1987 film “The Last Emperor.” That movie handed Bertolucci his greatest success. In 1988, it won all the nine Academy Awards that it had been nominated for — including best picture and best director. “The last emperor of Italian film is gone,” said Oscar-winning director Roberto Benigni and his wife, actress Nicoletta Braschi. In a statement carried by the ANSA news agency, the couple said his work remains “among the marvels of the 20th century.” NICOLE WINFIELD (AP)

“Commercial grade pepper spray sits between 2 million and 5.3 million Scoville units. The hottest pepper in the world, the Carolina Reaper, averages 1.5 million Scoville units. Those nachos would be inedible.” @TWESQ, reacting to Border Patrol
Foundation President Ron Colburn defending on “Fox & Friends” the use of tear gas on migrants at the border by claiming that pepper spray — not the same as tear gas — was “natural” and could be put on nachos. Scoville units measure the pungency of peppers.
“Ladies, if he ... - eats 10% of his weight a day in plant matter - leaves you every winter for warmer waters He’s not your man, he’s a manatee.” @MEGATRONIC13, contributing to the latest viral Twitter
meme meant to playfully help women identify potential partners who aren’t “the one.” The format takes well-known people, animals or objects and lists defining traits and characteristics. The traits start off vague, then get more specific before the identity of the subject is revealed.
“The new ‘She-Ra’ is so amazing because kids can finally see strong and amazing characters who represent them.”
“Cowboys and Indians? Can you not afford a publicist who would explain the reality of such a terrible idea?”
@SAILORLILAH, praising Netflix’s adaptation of the female superhero. The new animated series has been gaining a lot of praise on Twitter for its diversity, showcasing both people of color and characters from the LGBT community. Many Twitter users have shared their personal stories of recognizing characters that look like them, as the show also features a range of body sizes and types among its characters.
@LASERENITYAZ, blasting Eniko and
Kevin Hart for the theme of their son’s first birthday party. After posting photos from the gathering, the parents were chastised for their photos of guests posing with teepees and blankets with traditional Native American prints. Twitter users also noted that the theme was an insensitive portrayal of American settlers’ colonization of the West, which led to the genocide of many native peoples.

D.C. hosts ultimate elitist media bash “Morning Joe” co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski got married Saturday at the National Archives, according to Vanity Fair. “We wanted it to be really small and simple and not what you expected from Mika and Joe,” Brzezinski said. “Everything we do is exposed, and everything felt exposed every step of the way, so we want this to be private until it’s over.” Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., officiated the ceremony, which was only attended by close friends and family of the couple. It was reportedly the first wedding ever held at the Archives. (EXPRESS)

Shawn Mendes told Rolling Stone in an interview published Monday that he feels the need to publicly prove that he’s straight. “In the back of my heart, I feel like I need to go be seen with someone — like a girl — in public, to prove to people that I’m not gay,” he said. “Even though in my heart I know that it’s not a bad thing. There’s still a piece of me that thinks that. And I hate that side of me.” (EXPRESS)
