A puppy digging in a yard in Whidbey Island, Wash., made a 13,000-year-old discovery. Kirk Lacewell thought it was unusual that his yellow Lab, Scout, carried around what looked like a piece of wood for days. So he sent photos of it to experts at the University of Washington’s Burke Museum, in Seattle. Paleontologists concluded it was the tooth of a woolly mammoth. The fossilized tooth now sits on the mantle, where Scout can no longer get it. (AP)
Santa arrived early this year for shoppers at a Walmart in Kennett Square, Penn., where an anonymous benefactor paid off $29,000 worth of layaway items, WPVI-TV reported Monday. Shopper Christine Jackson had $141 in Christmas gifts for her family on layaway when she learned the bill had been paid. Her message to whoever picked up the tab: ”I just want to say thank you and for me I’m going to pay it forward.” (EXPRESS)
A man is accused of pointing a gun at the manager of a Popeyes during a dispute over condiments. NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune reported Earl Jethroe of Marrero, La., walked into the eatery Friday, ordered a meal and then took issue with the condiments provided. At some point, the arrest report says, Jethroe threw his chicken across the counter, pulled out a pistol and pointed it at the manager. He did not fire, and no one was hurt. (AP)

A gender-fluid tango twist CULTURE Standing under multicolored lights in a Columbia Heights studio, the tango instructor told her students to find a partner and practice the dance’s basic position, an intimate embrace between leader and follower. Without skipping a beat, Dhruv Sharma turned to a fellow student and asked a question rarely spoken in a partner dance class — especially by a man. “Do you want to lead or do you want to follow? Sharma asked his dance partner, who also happened to be a man. “Whichever you prefer, John Foss responded. The traditional rules of tango are deeply gendered — the man leads and the woman follows. But this is Queer Tango, a class where gender rules don’t matter, where students learn both roles and may dance with whomever they’d like. Earlier this fall, Tango Mercurio instructor Liz Sabatiuk launched the weekly Queer Tango class, taught at BloomBars

The class has also allowed longtime tango dancers to rethink gender roles and explore the dance from a new vantage point. “Rather than be some sort of a sexual game, tango is really a way that you can connect with anyone, Sabatiuk says. The class is part of a growing Queer Tango movement worldwide seeking to break apart the

gender norms of the Argentine dance. Sabatiuk says her class series is the first of its kind in the D.C. area. Unlike in traditional tango classes, Sabatiuk and her assistant instructor, Olga LiapisMuzzy, ask their students to switch roles between songs throughout the class. One of her students, Yiannis Markakis, 23, discovered tango three years ago through a Queer Tango community in Barcelona and first learned the dance as a follower. But at tango parties across the District, known as milongas, Markakis says, it’s often difficult for him to find opportunities to practice following. Perhaps Sabatiuk’s class could help the gender-fluid style of dance spread to more milongas, Markakis says. At about 9 p.m. during Thursday’s class, the traditional tango song “La Cumparsita began to play, signaling the final dance. But the night wasn’t over. The dancers were invited to a milonga in Eastern Market that night, where they would continue dancing — in whichever roles, with whomever they pleased.

THE DISTRICT The attorneys general of D.C. and Maryland began filing subpoenas Tuesday seeking records from the Trump Organization, the Internal Revenue Service and dozens of other entities as part of a lawsuit accusing Donald Trump of profiting off the presidency. The subpoenas came a day after U.S. District Court Judge Peter J. Messitte approved a brisk schedule for discovery in the case alleging that foreign and domestic government spending at Trump’s D.C. hotel amounts to gifts to the president in violation of the Constitution’s emoluments clause. The subpoenas target 37 entities, including 13 Trumplinked entities and the federal agency that oversees the lease for Trump’s Washington hotel. Subpoenas were also being sent to the Department of Defense, General Services Administration, Department of Commerce, Department of Agriculture and the IRS, which have spent taxpayer dollars at the hotel or have information on Trump’s finances relevant to the case. Other Trump entities that officials plan to subpoena include those related to his D.C. hotel and its management. Eighteen entities such as restaurants and hotels that compete with the Trump

hotel are also being subpoenaed. The Maryland attorney general’s office confirmed the targets of the subpoenas as they were being prepared Tuesday. The subpoenas focus on answering three questions: which foreign domestic governments are paying the Trump International Hotel in Washington; where that money is going; and how Trump’s hotel is affecting the hospitality industry in D.C. and Maryland. To help answer those questions, the subpoenas are asking for records of payments to Trump from state government and federal agencies that patronized the hotel. They’re also seeking information proving that hotel revenues are going to the president through his affiliated entities, including

Neither the Trump Organization nor the White House immediately responded to a request for comment. Trump’s Justice Department lawyers have previously argued that earnings from such business activity as hotel stays don’t qualify as emoluments. And in court papers last week challenging the judge’s decision to move the case forward, Justice lawyers objected to any discovery on a sitting president in order to avoid a “constitutional confrontation.” If there are no delays, legal discovery would conclude in early August. Efforts to clean up the Chesapeake Bay will soon get a boost in funding. The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and the Environmental Protection Agency said Monday that grants totalling more than $13 million are being awarded to bay restoration and conservation programs. The health of the nation’s largest estuary is improving after decades of poor health caused by pollution. But the bay still faces challenges when it comes to preventing manure and storm water from flowing into the watershed. Some of the projects supported by the grants will focus on helping farmers and towns to continue to reduce runoff. The states in the bay’s watershed are Delaware, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia as well as D.C. (AP)

Senators: Saudi ruler complicit in writer’s killing
Former Sen. Bob Dole is assisted out of his wheelchair Tuesday to salute former President George H.W. Bush.

WASHINGTON They came together Tuesday from worlds that can often seem so far apart: current and former elected officials, intelligence chiefs and foreign dignitaries standing alongside suit-clad federal workers, college students and other everyday Americans. They came together to bid farewell to George H.W. Bush, the patrician former president who dedicated years to public service. Throngs of people streamed into the Capitol Rotunda for a quiet moment seeing Bush’s flagdraped coffin as he lay in state. Those who gathered included Bush’s relatives, people who served under him and onetime political rivals, including Bob Dole, the former Senate majority leader and Republican nominee for president, who made an emotional appearance. Dole, who twice competed with Bush for the Republican nomination, approached the casket in a wheelchair. An aide helped him stand briefly. With his left hand, Dole, 95, gave a salute to Bush, who like him had been a veteran of World War II. Jeb Bush, the late president’s son, posted on Twitter of the moment: “Just incredible. Thank you Senator Dole.” Bush was to lie in state at the Capitol Rotunda until this morning. His body was brought to the Capitol on Monday to begin days

Before Bush, the last presidents to lie in state were Ronald Reagan in 2004 and, a little more than two years later, Gerald Ford, who also was a World War II veteran, congressman and vice president before serving as president. The tradition offers a brief period of stillness in an unsettled time, a ritual that crystallizes the moment when the country mourns and says goodbye. There have not been many presidents in the nation’s history, and Bush’s death leaves just four living former presidents, as well as President Trump. MARK BERMAN, MARISSA J. FOREIGN AFFAIRS Senators emerged from a closed-door briefing with the CIA director on Tuesday and accused the Saudi crown prince of complicity in the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. In some of their strongest accusations to date, lawmakers said evidence presented by the CIA overwhelmingly pointed to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s involvement in the assassination in Istanbul. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said while there was no smoking gun, there was a “smoking saw,” referring to the bone saw that investigators have said was used to dismember Khashoggi after he was killed in October by agents from Saudi Arabia. The accusations by Graham and other lawmakers followed an unusual briefing from CIA Director Gina Haspel, above, who had faced mounting pressure to speak to lawmakers. President Trump has said the evidence doesn’t conclusively show that Mohammed was involved in the assassination, and senators on Monday put themselves in direct opposition to the White House. “If the Crown Prince went in front of a jury, he would be convicted in 30 minutes,” said Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn. The CIA has concluded that Mohammed probably ordered the killing, according to people familiar with the matter. SHANE HARRIS AND KAROUN DEMIRJIAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Trump to China: I’m a ‘Tariff Man’ Stock markets plunge as potential trade deal appears to sputter ECONOMY The Trump administration raised doubts Tuesday about the substance of a U.S.-China trade cease-fire, contributing to a stock market plunge and intensifying fears of a global economic slowdown. Investors had initially welcomed the truce that the administration said was reached over the weekend in Buenos Aires between Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jingping — and sent stocks soaring Monday. But on Tuesday, after a series of confusing and conflicting words from Trump and some senior officials, stocks tumbled. “There was a rally in the expectation that something had happened,” said Willie Delwiche, investment strategist at Baird. “The problem is that something turned out to be nothing.” White House aides have struggled to explain the details of what the two countries actually agreed on. And China has not confirmed that it made most of the concessions that the Trump administration has claimed. Trump and White House aides promoted the weekend deal as a historic breakthrough that would ease trade tensions and potentially reduce tariffs. But by Tuesday morning, Trump was renewing his tariff threats. “President Xi and I want this deal to happen, and it probably will,” Trump tweeted. “But if not remember, I am a Tariff Man. When people or countries come in to raid the great wealth of our Nation, I want them to pay for the privilege of doing so.” Trump added that a 90-day timetable for negotiators to reach

a deeper agreement had begun. The president’s words had the effect of making the weekend agreement, already a vague and uncertain one, seem even less likely to lead to a lasting accord. Among the conflicting assertions that White House officials made was over whether China had actually agreed to drop its 40 percent tariffs on U.S. autos. Other concerns contributed to the stock sell-off, including falling long-term bonds. That suggested that investors expect the U.S. economy to slow, along with global growth, and possibly fall into recession in the coming year or two. CHRISTOPHER RUGABER (AP)
U.S. tells Russia it has 60 days to follow treaty NATIONAL SECURITY The U.S. warned Russia on Tuesday it has 60 days to start complying a landmark missile treaty or Washington could abandon the pact, creating doubts about nuclear security in Europe. At NATO talks in Brussels, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo accused Russia of “cheating at its arms control obligations” under the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty. He warned that if Russia did not comply with the treaty’s terms within 60 days, Washington could activate a sixmonth notice period for leaving the 1987 pact. The U.S. has shared evidence with its NATO allies that Russia’s new SSC-8 ground-fired cruise missile could give Moscow the ability to launch a nuclear strike in Europe with little or no notice. The INF is a bilateral treaty between Washington and Moscow that bans all land-based cruise and ballistic missiles with a range between 500 and 5,500 kilometers. Russia says the range of the new system does not exceed 500 kilometers. U.S. allies in NATO said Tuesday they “strongly support the finding of the U.S. that Russia is in material breach of its obligations,” while Washington is respecting the treaty. In Moscow, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told reporters that “Russia strictly complies with the provisions of the treaty, and the American side is aware of that.” LORNE COOK AND MATTHEW LEE (AP)

‘We will not settle for crumbs’ FRANCE The French government caved after Paris’ worst rioting in decades and delayed an increase in energy taxes Tuesday — but it was seen as “too little, too late” by many protesters whose anger seems increasingly focused on President Emmanuel Macron. Demonstrators were back in the streets wearing their signature yellow vests. They blocked several fuel depots and, on a highway near the southern city of Aubagne, commandeered a toll booth to let motorists pass for free near a sign reading “Macron dictator.” The protests began Nov. 17 with motorists upset over the fuel

tax increase, but have grown to encompass a range of complaints — the stagnant economy, social injustice and France’s tax system, one of the highest in Europe — and some are now calling for the government to resign. Last weekend, more than 130 people were injured and 412
arrested in rioting in the French capital. Shops were looted and cars torched in plush neighborhoods around the famed ChampsElysees Avenue. The Arc de Triomphe was sprayed with graffiti and vandalized. Four people have been killed, officials said, and more protests
are planned for this weekend. One unifying complaint among the protesters has been the anger at Macron and the perceived elitism of France’s aloof ruling class. Macron has shied away from speaking publicly about the protests that have created his biggest political crisis since taking office last May. It was Prime Minister Edouard Philippe who announced a six-month delay in the fuel tax increase that was to have begun in January. “No tax is worth putting the nation’s unity in danger,” Philippe said in a live televised address. “It’s a first step, but we will not settle for crumbs,” said Benjamin Cauchy, a self-proclaimed protest leader. Damien Abad, a lawmaker from the center-right Les Republicains party, called it “too little, too late.” THOMAS ADAMSON (AP)

U.K. Britain’s Parliament dealt Prime Minister Theresa May’s government two bruising defeats on Tuesday, even before lawmakers began an epic debate that will decide the fate of May’s European Union divorce deal — and of her political career. Opening five days of debate on the Brexit deal, May told Parliament that the British people had voted in 2016 to leave the EU, and it was the “duty of this Parliament to deliver on the result” of the referendum. Minutes before May rose to speak, lawmakers delivered a historic rebuke, finding her government in contempt of Parliament for refusing to publish the advice it had received from the country’s top law officer about the proposed terms of Brexit. The reprimand marks the first time a British government has been found in contempt of Parliament. Lawmakers also passed an amendment giving Parliament more say over the government’s next steps if the divorce deal is rejected in a vote on Dec. 11. The deal lays out the terms of Britain’s departure from the bloc on March 29 and sets the framework for future relations with the EU. Rejecting it would leave the U.K. facing the prospect of a chaotic “no-deal” Brexit, but May’s chances of winning majority backing for the deal appear slim. JILL LAWLESS AND RAF CASERT (AP)

Iran vows to close strait if U.S. cuts off oil exports
Shipping traffic has resumed to and from Ukraine’s ports on the Sea of Azov following a standoff with Russia, a Ukrainian minister said Tuesday. Commercial ships were moving through the Kerch Strait linking the Sea of Azov with the Black Sea, the official said. Russia insisted that it never blocked vessels from sailing through the Kerch Strait. (AP)
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Tuesday repeated his threat to close the Strait of Hormuz, the passageway for nearly a third of all oil traded by sea, if the U.S. shuts off Iran’s oil exports. The strait at the mouth of the Persian Gulf is crucial to global energy supplies. Brian Hook, the U.S. representative for Iran policy, said that Iran does not control the strait. (AP)

GOP campaign arm was hit by cyberattack Group says it was target of an unknown intruder during 2018 midterms WASHINGTON The campaign organization for House Republicans was the victim of a cyberattack that exposed email accounts to an unknown intruder during the 2018 election cycle, people familiar with the matter said. It wasn’t known whether a foreign government was behind the intrusion into the computer networks of the National Republican Congressional Committee, a person familiar with the case said. But the intruder was “sophisticated, based on their tactics and methods,” and the intrusion “was clearly designed to hide the tracks of who it was,” this person said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the matter is under investigation. The intrusion was first reported by Politico, which said senior House Republicans, including Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., as well as rank-and-file members weren’t told of the breach until the news organization inquired about the episode with the committee on Monday. “The NRCC can confirm that it was the victim of a cyber intrusion by an unknown entity,” said Ian Prior, a committee spokesman. “The cybersecurity of the

committee’s data is paramount, and upon learning of the intrusion, the NRCC immediately launched an internal investigation and notified the FBI, which is now investigating the matter,” Prior said. The committee discovered the breach in April, said a person familiar with the case. A spokeswoman for the FBI declined to comment. The NRCC intrusion bears similarities to the Democratic National Committee breach during the 2016 election, in which Russian hackers stole emails of senior committee officials. But in that case, the Russians gave the emails to WikiLeaks, which published them ahead of the Democratic National Convention. The emails revealed that
committee leaders had supported Hillary Clinton as the likely nominee, even though they had publicly claimed not to have a preferred candidate. There is no indication that any NRCC emails were made public. One security expert said the committee may have erred in not disclosing the breach. “The information extracted from this operation could have been of extremely high value for foreign intelligence services,” said Brett Bruen, a National Security Council official in the Obama administration. “By not being transparent about this clear vulnerability to our democracy, the NRCC placed the interests of party over those of the country.” ELLEN NAKASHIMA AND SHANE HARRIS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

LEAGUE EXPANDS
Seattle to be NHL’s 32nd team in 2021
In search of a backup, Gruden says the team decided against working out Kaepernick REDSKINS The Redskins considered bringing in Colin Kaepernick for a workout on Tuesday, coach Jay Gruden said, as the team looks to add another quarterback to the roster following Colt McCoy’s season-ending injury Monday night. But they ultimately decided against it. Kaepernick has not played in the NFL since the 2016 season, when he made national headlines for kneeling during the playing of the national anthem before games to call attention to the issues of racial inequality and police brutality against AfricanAmericans. Kaepernick filed a collusion grievance against the NFL in October of 2017, alleging an organized effort to keep him off a roster as a result of his protests. The team needs to sign a quarterback to back up Mark Sanchez, the only y healthy y signal-caller g on
the roster who was signed by the team just two weeks ago. The Redskins were expected to bring in two free agent quarterbacks for a workout late Tuesday, and will compare them to the group that worked out after Alex Smith suffered a season-ending leg injury Nov. 18 against the Texans. Gruden, who said that the decision to not bring Kaepernick in for a workout was made for football reasons only, said Kaepernick had been “discussed, for sure,” but that his skill set didn’t match what they needed in a quarterback being picked up five days before the team’s next game. “It’s just going to be a matter of which way do we want to go?” Gruden said. “Do we want to go with a guy that’s familiar with my terminology who we worked out last week … or go with a guy and teach, basically, a whole new kind of offense with new

The Redskins said they did not bring in Colin Kaepernick, above, for a workout as they search for a backup for new starter Mark Sanchez, top.
McCoy lost for season Coach Jay Gruden confirmed after the Redskins’ 28-13 loss to the Eagles on Monday night that QB Colt McCoy suffered a fractured right fibula, which will keep him out the rest of the year. “This is a tough blow,” Gruden said. “Losing Alex [Smith] is one thing, a great leader, great quarterback. Put in a lot of time with him. Colt finally gets his golden opportunity and he gets kicked in the leg and breaks it. Heartbroken for both of those guys, really.” It’s uncertain whether either Smith, who broke his right fibula and tibia on Nov. 18, or McCoy will be ready for OTAs in the summer. (TWP)
offensive linemen with a lot of the zone reads and all that stuff. Not a lot of time to really get a brand new quarterback, a new system installed and taught in a couple days of practice.” Gruden added: “He’s been talked about and discussed, but we’ll probably go in a different direction.” Mark Geragos, Kaepernick’s attorney in his pending collusion grievance against the NFL and teams, said the Redskins’ decision supports Kaepernick’s claims. “Isn’t it obvious what’s happening?” Geragos said via email. Gruden said they would need to build a specific package of plays and formations to take advantage of Kaepernick’s athleticism, and that doing so this late in the season wasn’t realistic. Had the injuries taken place in Week 1, he said, it might be a different story. KAREEM COPELAND
The NHL Board of Governors on Tuesday unanimously approved adding Seattle as the league’s 32nd franchise, with play set to begin in 2021. The as-yet unnamed franchise will be the Emerald City’s first major winter sports team since the NBA’s SuperSonics left town in 2008. The decision was widely expected after the Seattle Hockey Partners group impressed the board in October with a plan that had strong ownership, a downtown arena and a season-ticket drive that drummed up 10,000 orders in 12 minutes. The NHL will realign in the West for the 2021-22 season: Seattle will play the Pacific, home to geographic rivals like Vancouver, Calgary and San Jose, and Arizona will move e to the Central Division. Ohio State coach Urban Meyer announced his retirement re Tuesday, citing health reasons and a difficult year that included a three-game suspension over ov his handling of domestic violence allegations against a now-fired assistant coach. Champion Red Sox accept invitation to White House
76ers guard Markelle Fultz is out indefinitely with thoracic outlet syndrome. Fultz visited with several specialists to figure out what’s ailing him. The No. 1 pick of the 2017 draft said the specialists have identified a compression or irritation in the area between the lower neck and upper chest. Fultz played just 14 games last season because of a shoulder injury. (AP)
The Red Sox on Monday accepted an invitation to the White House to celebrate their World Series title. Once a non-partisan perk of winning it all, visits to Washington have become more politicized and some teams have declined invitations from President Trump. “I’m going to use my platform the right way,” said manager Alex Cora, a native of Puerto Rico. Nats agree to deal with All-Star pitcher Corbin 29-year-old left-hander reportedly signs 6-year contract worth $140M NATIONALS The Nationals landed the consensus prize of the starting pitching market Tuesday when they agreed to terms on a six-year deal with left-hander Patrick Corbin, according to a person familiar with the situation. The terms of the deal are not yet known, though Yahoo and others have reported it is worth $140 million and does include that ever-present Nationals’ specialty — deferred money. The deal fills Washington’s most glaring hole, providing a proven ace behind Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg. Corbin, an All-Star in 2013 and 2018, is 29 and went 11-7 with a 3.15 ERA with the Arizona Diamondbacks last season, one of his best in the big leagues. Since he debuted with Arizona in 2012, Corbin has a 3.91 ERA and has struck out 9.0 batters per nine innings. The lefty relies on a fastball that sits in the low-90s and a whiff-inducing slider, and actually held right-handed hitters to a lower batting average against (.213) than lefties (.239). He is not a proven ace in the way Scherzer was when the Nationals signed him to his seven-year megadeal, nor even in the way Stra Strasburg
Patrick Corbin went 11-7 with a 3.15 ERA last season with the Diamondbacks.

was when they extended him for $175 million. But with a reported average annual value of $23 million, Washington is not paying Corbin Scherzer or Strasburg money. The Nationals hosted Corbin for a visit last week, one that included dinner with general manager Mike Rizzo and managing principal owner Mark Lerner. Corbin grew up in upstate New York as a devout Yankees fan, so many in the industry speculated the Yankees — who also hosted him — had an inside track to sign him. According to reports, New York was unwilling to give Corbin a sixth year on a deal, which led many to believe the freespending Philadelphia Phillies
would sign him. Ultimately, the Nationals seized him, and in so doing checked off another box on their offseason checklist. Since the end of the regular season, the Nationals have traded for reliever Kyle Barraclough, signed reliever Trevor Rosenthal, signed catcher Kurt Suzuki, traded for catcher Yan Gomes, and now signed starter Corbin. Their biggest needs entering this offseason were starting pitching, catching and bullpen depth. They have now addressed all of them a week before the Winter Meetings even begin — and long before Bryce Harper’s contract situation seems likely to reach its conclusion. CRITIC’S NOTEBOOK
The 1975 probes the p online age
CHRIS RICHARDS | THE WASHINGTON POST
An uncanny mess: Grande is getting lost in her artifice So where does “thank u, next” rank on the list of things that made you feel insane this year? Since perching on our planet’s scorched crust last month, this massive Ariana Grande hit has been difficult to escape, making all kinds of people feel all kinds of ways. It’s a pop song about finding enrichment through heartbreak, and in the opening verse, Grande cites four of her exes by name — one of whom recently became her ex-fiance (“Saturday Night Live” star Pete Davidson), and another who recently died of an accidental drug overdose (the rapper Mac Miller). Supporters have called it “brave,” “empowered” and all of the other nice things that nice people say on social media whenever we prioritize cheering for music over experiencing it. Yes, this song might be the biggest brave-empoweringhonest-pure-unapologetic-litYASSS etc., hit of 2018, 2 YASSS-etc., but it’s
d also profoundly atypical and s disconcertingly weird. It’s as er if a singer at the height of her d fame accidentally wandered into pop’s uncanny valley — a disconcerting gray zone d between a superstar’s glazed g image and the sentient being behind it. We crave what’s real, and t. sometimes we actually get it. ce But with pop music, the space at between what’s real and what ons isn’t is where our imaginations get to play. We start to lose something whenever that gap begins to close. With “thank u, next,” Grande practically seals it shut. She and Davidson began dating in May, had gotten engaged by June, then went poof in October — with the media monitoring every 15 minutes of it. When Grande dropped her fourth album, “Sweetener,” in August, the only way to truly hear it was to break out a reliable measuring stick: How much would we care about this artist’s music without their celebrity, and how much would we care about their celebrity without their music?
GETTY IMAGES/EXPRESS ILLUSTRATION
Grande’s music has always been softly magnetic, even when it wasn’t all that great. It usually comes down to her voice, which sounds more and more human year after year. The song’s music video, however, pushes away from reality by re-creating various scenes from an array of aughties coming-of-age movies — “Mean Girls,” “Bring It On,” “13 Going on 30” and “Legally Blonde.” Yes, this cozy nostalgia mashup earned a recordsetting 50 million views within its first 24 hours online, but the video ultimately feels drab and
unimaginative, stepping out of the uncanny valley and back into fantasy-land. Watch closely, and you’ll notice Grande moving her mouth in weird ways, too. During that first verse, she isn’t actually singing, or even syncing. She doesn’t want her glossed lips to touch as she rattles off the names of those ex-flames. This is the kind of pop artifice we’re comfortable with. She’s only keeping it as real as she has to.
English electropop band The 1975 delivers a gem with “A Brief Inquiry Into w Online Relationships,” which serves as a w heart-wrenching road map for modern relationships. Much of tthis effort — released Friday — addresses life rushing by too fast. Synthesizers swell on “Love It If We Made It” as singer Matt Healy declares, “Modernity has failed us.” And “Be My Mistake” is possibly tthe loveliest slow ballad of 2018. Throughout, tthe smart lyrics offer a glimpse at the hurdles we often erect for ourselves in this age of instant communication, and miscommunication. RON HARRIS (AP)

entertainment Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy hits on life and death, love and heartbreak ALBUM REVIEW Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy isn’t known for being warm and fuzzy. So it’s with some irony that his first proper solo record of all new material is titled “Warm.” But it’s also so Tweedy. Take “Let’s Go Rain,” for example. At first blush, its upbeat tempo and catchy chorus makes it sound very much like a feelgood campfire singalong song.
But that’s where Tweedy fools you — the song is actually a wish for another biblical flood to wipe the world clean and start over again. Ah, Jeff! You jokester. The sound on “Warm,” which came out Friday, is somewhere between Tweedy’s solo acoustic shows and the finely tuned jetengine rock of Wilco. It has a similar vibe to many of the songs on “Sukierae,” a side project Tweedy released in 2014 outside of Wilco under the band name of Tweedy. Exploring life, death, love and

heartbreak is familiar territory for Tweedy, and he hits on all of those themes with “Warm.” The record comes after the death of his father and his wife’s battle with cancer, and coincides with the release of Tweedy’s memoir, “Let’s Go (So We Can Get Back).” Tweedy is at his most introspective in “Having Been Is No Way to Be,” reflecting on his sobriety. “We all think about dying,” Tweedy sings on “Don’t Forget,” before adding in perfectly fitting Tweedy fashion, “Don’t let it kill you.” SCOTT BAUER (AP)

Jamil for asserting that airbrushing should be banned. In comments to the BBC, the actress described the technique as “anti-feminist” and “fat-phobic.” Not everyone was on board with the idea; the above Twitter user compared Jamil’s take to Alicia Keys’ makeup-free campaign and noted that many celebs forget that their looks aren’t the norm.
@MATTEBITCH, defending Ed Sheeran for his no-frills T-shirt

While some said it was an example of the differing fashion standards for male and female performers, others, such as @OliviaAundreaC, noted that the singers’ fashion choices reflected their different brands.

Amazon News was critiqued for the wording of the tweet, which said its Amazon Flex program “allowed” the driver to lose the weight, and for promoting a tactic that was showcased on the parody show “Nathan for You.”
“This wasn’t a good look in 2002. It’s not a good look now.” @JOELLEMONIQUE, reacting to a story
