Cleared to land at North Pole VIRGINIA United Airlines Flight 2799, which departed from Dulles International Airport on Saturday morning, was not your average holiday slog. No struggling to get luggage in the overhead bins. No attempts to squeeze that oversized bag under the seats. And no one truly upset about getting the middle seat. Instead, passengers found the interior of the 777 was bedecked in wreaths, ribbons and glittery garlands. Flight attendants wearing Santa hats and reindeer antlers passed out candy canes and Christmas cookies. And when the plane descended into the “North Pole” — a location that looked strangely similar to the Dulles Airport travelers had recently departed — 100 grinning children cheered in their seats and chanted, “San-ta! San-ta! San-ta!” Those children and their parents were passengers on this year’s Washington “Fantasy Flight,” an annual holiday event organized by United Airlines and

Disney princesses, Santa’s elves, Washington Nationals mascots, pageant queens, therapy dogs, clowns, jugglers, a squad of yellow Minions, a troupe of bagpipers, a jazz band and an inflatable bounce house. And, of course, there were Santa and his wife, setting up shop at the end of the airport terminal to listen to children’s wishes. The plane ride wasn’t quite so joyful for 9-year-old Gitavia Marshall-Lopez of Fort Washington, Md. — she’s not a big fan of turbulence, it turns out — but she later concluded that the trip was worth it to get some face-to-face time with Santa so she could ask for an iPhone to give to her mom. Her favorite part of the flight? “Those cookies were really, really good,” Gitavia said. And though there was no return flight scheduled for the children concluding their North Pole adventures, they had another surprise waiting for them when they finally exited the terminal on Saturday afternoon. In the time that they had been on their “Fantasy Flight,” it had begun to snow. It was a real-life winter wonderl a nd . M A RTINE P OW ER S (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Meanwhile, the snow mostly didn’t stick to roads — minimizing disruptions around the region. All three airports posted record snow totals for Dec. 9. Reagan National received 2 inches, Dulles International 4 inches and BWI 2.6 inches, all besting the previous record amounts, set in 2005. Most spots inside the Beltway picked up about 2 inches. Woodend Sanctuary faces overrun that threatens ecosystem MATT MCCLAIN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

MONTGOMERY COUNTY If you work for a naturalist society and your job is to restore a nature sanctuary eaten alive by ravenous deer, your options for eradicating the pesky but otherwise charming creatures are somewhat limited. For instance, you can’t kill them. So before sunrise Sunday, the director of restoration for the Audubon Naturalist Society in Chevy Chase, Md., organized more than 100 volunteers at the organization’s Woodend Sanctuary for a deer drive. The instructions: Line up nearly shoulder-to-shoulder at the perimeter of 40 acres of forest, then march toward the deer, giving no quarter, forcing them through the gate of a newly built fence and into Rock Creek Park. As for the pace, “You can sing ‘Here Comes the Bride’ in your head,” Alison Pearce, the restoration director, told her troops. “You don’t want to scare the deer.” Along with the rest of the region, Woodend Sanctuary has been overrun by deer — at their worst, about 30 of them, which is roughly 24 times more than the land can support. In scientific terms, the deer have been

When trees die, there are no saplings left for new ones to grow. “The degradation has also caused the loss of ground-nesting and understory-adapted birds at Woodend such as the eastern towhee and the wood thrush,” the society says in informational materials, “as well as myriad insect communities that support local food webs but require a lush forest understory to thrive. “ For naturalists, this is an existential conundrum. “I feel a little bad for them,” said Paula Wang, a self-described wildflower enthusiast from Silver Spring who showed up to

help. “They’re just doing what they naturally do. But it’s heartbreaking. This is like a forest that has completely gone away.” It wasn’t long before they encountered the deer, who seemed perplexed. The deer stared at the humans, sometimes coming within 10 feet. The marchers slowly closed in, communicating by hand signals and handheld radios, forcing the deer into a small area near the fence opening. The deer — about 10 of them — hid near some trees. The marchers got closer. The deer then ran in a few circles, pranced over to the gate and bolted across Jones Bridge Road, which was protected by county police. Off they went into Rock Creek Park. No, VDOT isn’t banning your car from I-66 Virginia transportation authorities won’t prohibit vehicles valued at under $60,000 from driving on an expanded roadway where tolls on a 10-mile stretch now can exceed $30. A bogus story about a major expansion of Northern Virginia’s network of toll roads has been circulating online since the state’s transportation department launched its “Express Lanes” concept Monday on Interstate 66. Among other false claims, the story said transportation authorities would ban cars valued at under $60,000 to give wealthy commuters an “exclusive roadway” to and from D.C. Michelle Holland, a spokeswoman with the Virginia Department of Transportation, said the story was obviously “not true.” (AP)

Libertarian Cliff Hyra spent about $76,000. The race was largely viewed as a test of politics in the Trump era. (TWP)

Fire flare-up prompts new Calif. evacuations Deadly wildfires rage into 2nd week as crews work to contain them CALIFORNIA A flare-up on the western edge of Southern California’s largest and most destructive wildfire sent residents fleeing Sunday, as wind-fanned flames churned through canyons and down hillsides toward coastal towns. Crews with help from waterdropping aircraft saved several homes as unpredictable gusts sent the blaze churning deeper into foothill areas northwest of Los Angeles that haven’t burned in decades. New evacuations were ordered in Carpinteria, a seaside

city in Santa Barbara County. The fire department posted a photo of one residence engulfed in flames before dawn. It’s unclear whether other structures burned. Thousands of homes in the county were without power. Firefighters made progress Saturday on other fronts of the enormous fire that started Dec. 4 in neighboring Ventura County. Containment was way up on other major blazes in Los Angeles, Riverside and San Diego counties. Forecasters said Santa Ana winds that whipped fires across the region last week would continue in some areas at least through this evening. “This is the new normal,” Gov. Jerry Brown said Saturday.

“We’re about ready to have firefighting at Christmas. This is very odd and unusual.” The Ventura County blaze continued to burn Sunday in the Los Padres National Forest near the town of Ojai and toward a preserve established for endangered California condors. Overall, the fires have destroyed nearly 800 homes and buildings, killed dozens of horses and forced more than 200,000 people to flee flames that have burned over 270 square miles since Dec. 4. One death, of a 70-year-old woman who crashed her car on an evacuation route, is attributed to the fire in Santa Paula, where the fire began.

They had 150,000 people sign up for the promotion and collected $15 from each. They redistributed the money based on answers from a survey, demographic information and geographical census data. The company, citing the state of wealth inequality in the U.S., awarded $1,000 checks to the “poorest” 100 people, and issued a $15 refund to 10,000. The rest received no compensation. (EXPRESS)

In the wake of sexual harassment scandals, fewer holiday events are serving alcohol

BUSINESS ’Tis the season to keep that office holiday party from adding to the list of workplace sexual misconduct scandals. With the names of Weinstein, Spacey and Lauer likely getting more mentions this year than Dancer, Prancer and Blitzen, employers are making sure their year-end staff merrymaking doesn’t generate more inappropriate conduct. There will be less booze at many. An independent business organization has renewed its annual warning not to hang mistletoe. And some will have party monitors, keeping an eye out for inappropriate behavior. TV and movies often depict office parties as wildly inappropriate bacchanals. But even a regular office party can be complicated because the rules people normally observe at work don’t quite apply, which makes it easier for people to accidentally cross a line — or try to get away with misbehavior. Especially when too much drinking is involved. According to a survey by Chicago-based consulting company Challenger, Gray & Christmas, only 49 percent of companies plan to serve alcohol at their holiday events. Last year that number was 62 percent, the highest number in the decade the firm has run its survey. The number had been going up each year as the economy improved. “As soon as you introduce alcohol at an off-site activity, peoples’ guards are dropped,” said Ed Yost, manager of employee relations and development for the Society for Human Resource Management, based in Alexandria. “It’s presumed to be a less formal, more social environment. Some people will drink more than they typically

would on a Friday night or a Saturday because it’s an open bar or a free cocktail hour.” The Huffington Post reported recently that Vox Media, which runs sites including Vox and Recode, won’t have an open bar this year at its holiday party and will instead give each employee two tickets they can redeem for drinks. It will also have more food than in years past. The company in October fired its editorial director, Lockhart Steele, after a former employee made allegations of sexual harassment against him. A survey by Bloomberg Law said those kinds of safeguards are common: While most companies ask bartenders, security or even some employees to keep an eye on how much partygoers are drinking, others limit the number of free drinks or the time they’re available. A small minority have cash bars instead of an open bar. The National Federation of

Independent Businesses recommends all of those steps, and adds another that might seem obvious these days: Don’t hang mistletoe. It’s been giving those suggestions for several years. spending his corporate holiday party the way he always does: patrolling hallways, checking secluded areas and trying to watch for people who look like they are stuck in an uncomfortable situation — for example, inappropriate touching or a conversation that’s taken a bad turn. If they’re visibly uncomfortable, he’ll intervene and plan a later conversation with the person responsible. The Challenger, Gray & Christmas survey shows that about 80 percent of companies will have a holiday party, the same as last year. And not everyone is planning changes. Yost said he’s not making changes to his group’s event. He added that companies concerned about sexual misconduct need to look further than the holiday party. “While there are additional complications that are associated with a holiday event, that’s one day a year,” he said. A vote on Alabama’s identity Divisive race for Senate seen as a referendum on how state is viewed

Trump’s visit to new museum highlights rifts

AP

POLITICS For many Alabama voters, unaccustomed to a competitive election and the national attention that has come with it, the bitter showdown between Republican Roy Moore and Democrat Doug Jones has become something more personal than a race to fill an open Senate seat. It is now a referendum on the state’s identity. Supporters of Jones say with concern that a win Tuesday by the firebrand Moore would derail the state’s efforts to escape its painful history and rebrand as a forward-thinking place welcoming to Fortune 500 companies and a highly educated workforce. “You travel across the country and you say ‘Alabama,’ and something goes right across people’s eyes every time,” said retired actor Jonathan Fuller, a 61-yearold Democrat, as he shopped at a Piggly Wiggly market in a Birmingham suburb. “I don’t want to apologize anymore for where I’m from because there is this pocket of stubbornness in my state.” Moore supporters see his candidacy as a conduit for their rejection of the national media and political elites who they believe unfairly caricature their home state as a cultural backwater. They shrug off the notion that sexual misconduct allegations against Moore — which some see as a fabrication by outsiders

Backers of Democrat Doug Jones, left, say the state’s image would improve if he defeats Republican Roy Moore.

— should make a difference. “I don’t believe a word they say about him,” J.W. Poore, a 77-yearold Republican and retired home builder, said outside a Lowe’s Home Improvement store in the Birmingham area. “The Democrats have been against us all the way. They don’t accept the president, they don’t accept nobody.” The vivid contrast between the candidates — Moore, 70, with his apocalyptic warnings about Muslims and gay rights, against Jones, a low-key 63-year-old lawyer best known for prosecuting Ku Klux Klan members who planned the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham — has put in sharp

relief the idea that the results could speak volumes about Alabama to the rest of the country. A pivotal group Tuesday will be GOP-leaning voters pulled between their traditional values and a desire to turn the page on the uglier parts of Alabama’s past. “We’ve got a lot of good here, a lot of people who died for equal rights. And we’ve got a lot of people who are stuck in 1930, and that’s not going to change,” Phillip Hutchins, a 67-year-old Democrat and retired aircraft worker, said outside a grocery store in Titusville, a heavily black neighborhood in Birmingham. Business-minded white Republicans — a bloc that sees itself

as modern and emphasizes education, commerce and tradition — have been uneasy about Moore, too. They don’t want to do anything to slow the state’s transformation in recent decades from an agricultural economy to a manufacturing and technology hub anchored in a growing federal contracting community. “The margin of error is extremely thin,” said George Clark, president of Manufacture Alabama, an industry advocacy group. “Everybody is trying to improve their workforce. “They should be heard. ... [A]ny woman who has felt violated ... they have every right to speak up.” NIKKI HALEY, U.S. ambassador to the U.N., saying Sunday on CBS that the women who have accused President Trump

Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., to GOP voters: Don’t support Roy Moore; write in candidate instead

JACKSON, MISS. President Trump this weekend honored figures of the civil rights movement at a ceremony that exposed stark divisions among Americans about his commitment to that legacy. Trump on Saturday toured the new Mississippi Civil Rights Museum and the adjacent Museum of Mississippi, both in Jackson. At the opening ceremony, about 25 people stood silently with Confederate battle flag stickers over their mouths. He spent about 30 minutes at the museums, gave a 10-minute speech to select guests inside and flew back to Florida, skipping the dedication ceremony. In his speech, Trump did not acknowledge the anger his participation had sparked. The national president of the NAACP, Derrick Johnson, and Jackson Mayor Chokwe Lumumba said Saturday that they did not attend because of Trump’s presence. Lumumba took Trump to task for “his pompous disregard for all of those factors that will not enable us to stand with him today.” The state’s attorney general, Jim Hood, criticized Republican Gov. Phil Bryant for inviting Trump. “It threw cold water in the face of people who fought the battles for civil rights,” Hood said. Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., a leader of the civil rights movement, also stayed away. He said Trump’s presence at the museum opening was an insult. DARLENE SUPERVILLE (AP)

Moore said Sunday of women who accused him: “I had no encounter with them.”

nation+world Two states considering untried use of fentanyl for the death penalty CRIMINAL JUSTICE The synthetic painkiller fentanyl killed more than 20,000 Americans last year in overdoses. Now, Nevada and Nebraska want to use the opioid’s powerful properties to execute prisoners on death row. Nevada, which last put someone to death in 2006, had planned its first fentanyl-assisted execution for November. A judge postponed it over concerns about

the paralytic, and the case is awaiting review by Nevada’s Supreme Court. Nebraska is looking toward a fentanyl-assisted execution as soon as January. States are facing increased difficulties in carrying out the death penalty due to problems obtaining the drugs they’ve long used, as some pharmaceutical companies refuse to supply their drugs for executions. Florida, Ohio and Oklahoma have turned to new drug combinations. Other states have authorized a return to older methods, such as the firing squad and the electric chair.

Spain rescues 104 migrants crossing Mediterranean Sea

Fentanyl offers several advantages. The drug is 50 times more powerful than heroin and up to 100 times more powerful than morphine. It’s also easy to obtain: Despite the opioid crisis, doctors frequently use fentanyl to anesthetize patients for major surgery or to treat severe pain in patients with advanced cancer. But doctors and death penalty opponents compare the untested use of fentanyl to human experimentation, saying it could lead to painful, botched executions. THE TONE WAS SET AT THE OUTSET of the Redskins’ disastrous visit to Carson, Calif., when Philip

Rivers fired a 34-yard pass to Chargers wide receiver Tyrell Williams on the first play Sunday. Everything that followed came easily for a home team that put up 488 yards of offense. Washing-

ton’s limitations on offense were exposed as the Redskins suffered their fourth loss in five games and fell to 5-8. The Chargers (7-6) extended their winning streak to four and moved above .500 for the first time. Rivers had 256 yards passing in the first half and finished with 319. Washington’s Kirk Cousins threw for just 151 yards, his fewest in a start since October 2014. LIZ CLARKE (THE WASHINGTON POST) WORST DEFENSE: The Chargers put up 354 yards of offense and had 18 first downs … in the first half.

BEST HOPE: Niles Paul prolonged the Redskins’ third possession with a leaping grab on fourth down, and Cousins found Vernon Davis for a 23-yard score three plays later.

WORST OFFENSE : The Redskins finished with 201 yards, their worst output since they had 186 yards in a 44-16 loss to the Panthers in 2015.

DENIS POROY (AP)

WORST START: The Chargers began the game as the only team that hadn’t scored on an opening drive this year. That changed with a 10-play, 60-yard drive capped with a 33-yard field goal by Travis Coons.

WORST RUBBING IT IN: A 75-yard touchdown pass from Philip Rivers to Tyrell Williams helped give the Chargers a 23-6 halftime lead, but that didn’t make them conservative. Midway through the third quarter, a 51-yard throw from Rivers to Keenan Allen on a flea-flicker set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Melvin Gordon

Linebacker Kyle Emanuel picks off Kirk Cousins in the first quarter. WORST DISCIPLINE: Los Angeles

mounted another 10-play drive on its next possession, which featured an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Redskins linebacker Ryan Anderson, a face mask penalty on Josh Norman and a defensive pass interference penalty that was

BEST DEFENSIVE HIGHLIGHT:

declined because the pass was completed anyway. The Chargers added to their lead with an 8-yard TD catch by tight end Hunter Henry. WORST THROW: Kirk Cousins hurled a deep pass down the left

sideline, and Chargers cornerback Trevor Williams deflected the ball right to linebacker Kyle Emanuel, whose second career interception led to a short field goal by Coons. That gave Los Angeles a 13-0 lead in the first quarter.

Capitals’ T.J. Oshie (upper body) expected to miss 3rd straight game tonight at Islanders (7, NBCSWA)

THE TAKEAWAY

Redskins stay down after big pass The enduring image came early in the second quarter on a one-play drive that lasted 11 seconds. The Chargers’ answer to the Redskins’ only score that mattered — a 23yard catch by Vernon Davis that was marred by a missed extra point — was a 75-yard touchdown. Tyrell Williams, a one-time practice squad player from Western Oregon, put a double move on Josh Norman. Williams had at least 5 yards of separation as he trotted into the end zone. The Redskins surrendered a chance to finish with a winning record with little resistance. They allowed more yards in the first half (354) than they had in six entire games this year. And they sent Philip Rivers to the bench — smiling and healthy with 319 yards passing — with the majority of the fourth quarter remaining. GABE HIATT (EXPRESS)

Matthew Stafford passed for 381 yards with an injured throwing hand and set up Matt Prater for a 46-yard field goal in the closing seconds in Tampa, Fla. Stafford made his 109th consecutive start despite being limited in practice after his right hand was stepped on the previous week at Baltimore. He completed 36 of 44 attempts against the Bucs (4-9), and the Lions (7-6) overcame two interceptions and a fumble to stop a two-game losing streak. (AP)

Dak Prescott threw three touchdown passes for the visiting Cowboys to spoil Steve Spagnuolo’s debut as interim coach and the return of Eli Manning to the Giants’ starting lineup. Prescott threw for 332 yards with TD passes of 20, 81, and 50 yards to Jason Witten, Rod Smith and Dez Bryant. Dallas (7-6) had 454 yards of offense. LeSean McCoy scored on a 21-yard run with 1:33 left in overtime to secure the Bills’ victory in a wintry, white-out setting best suited for snow shoes and sled dogs. McCoy ran for 156 yards and topped the 1,000-yard mark for the sixth time in his career on a slick, snowcovered field in Orchard Park, N.Y. The Colts (3-10) have been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention, but the Bills (7-6) are still in the hunt. (AP)

Brett Hundley threw a 25-yard TD pass to Davante Adams in overtime in Cleveland as the Packers rallied from a two-touchdown deficit in the fourth quarter. Cleveland fell to 0-13 and made too many crucial mistakes to break into the win column. On third-and-6, Hundley threw a short pass to Adams, who broke a tackle and went in untouched with 5:05 left as the Packers (7-6) won in overtime for the second straight week — and the third time this season. The Chiefs made a big statement in the crowded AFC West by shutting down Derek Carr and the visiting Raiders. Kansas City (7-6) entered the game tied atop the division with the Raiders (6-7) and Chargers, who visit Kansas City on Saturday night. Alex Smith threw for 268 yards and Charcandrick West had a TD run for the Chiefs. Marshawn Lynch’s 22-yard run with 8:51 left gave Oakland its first points. Carr threw for 211 yards, a TD and two picks. (AP)

The Eagles clinched the NFC East with a win in Los Angeles but lost their MVP candidate when quarterback Carson Wentz suffered a left knee injury that doctors believe to be a torn ACL. How Stanton trade affects Nats ANALYSIS The idea of Bryce Harper one day playing for the Yankees has lingered for years. The right fielder for the Nationals wears No. 34 because the sum of the parts is seven, Mickey Mantle’s number with the Yankees. Harper has always seemed destined for a game-changing contract, and the Yankees are one of the few teams that can afford those. But speculation about Harper and the Yankees might as well have ended Saturday, when Giancarlo Stanton got the deal he wanted. The 2017 NL MVP has reportedly agreed to be traded from the Marlins to the Yankees.

Move by Yankees limits funds, space in outfield for future run at Harper

Bryce Harper, left, and Giancarlo Stanton have each won an NL MVP award.

In New York, Stanton will join an outfield that already included 2017 AL Rookie of the Year Aaron Judge and is now so loaded with power hitters in the corners that it won’t have room for Harper. Stanton and Judge will still be a part of the outfield when Harper hits free agency next winter. The Yankees, now burdened

with the largest contract in MLB history at $25 million per year on average, seem unlikely to hand out the deal expected to eclipse it. The Nationals have lost a formidable in-division foe in Stanton, who compiled a 1.001 OPS and 34 homers against them in his career. Perhaps more importantly for Washington, one logical

Angels: Japanese star Shohei Ohtani will join 2018 rotation and bat as DH on many days he doesn’t pitch

landing spot for Harper is now likely off the table. Harper has given many indications that he would prefer a big market, at least bigger than D.C. Executives have indicated he will command a deal worth more than $400 million — perhaps even as high as $500 million — which is not a price many teams can afford. Pare down the list, and teams like the Dodgers, Cubs, Red Sox, and perhaps even the Phillies and Angels seem to fit. With Daniel Murphy, Gio Gonzalez, Shawn Kelley and others coming off the Nationals’ payroll after the 2018 season, they should have a chunk of money to commit to Harper. As they prepare to chase Harper next winter, the likely absence of the Yankees certainly can’t hurt. CHELSEA JANES (THE WASHINGTON POST)

May your days be organized

Law would end loan forgiveness

PROFESSIONS Last year, Scott Roewer got a call on Dec. 23. “Do you guys decorate for Christmas?” the woman on the other end of the line asked. “And I said, ‘Yes, are you looking for services for next year?’ ” recalls Roewer, a professional organizer and the owner of D.C.based The Organizing Agency. “And she said, ‘No, for this year.’ ” The woman explained that her family, who typically traveled for the holidays, was unexpectedly stuck at home to care for a sick child. Roewer’s response was to purchase an artificial Christmas tree and pile of decor, decking the woman’s home on the morning of Christmas Eve. During the holiday season, professional organizers like Roewer and his staff will put up your tree and decorate inside and outside; afterward, they’ll pack up the decorations and store them in a way that maximizes space. They’ll gift-wrap, party-plan, craft handwritten menus and track down hard-to-find presents. While services border on concierge-like during the holidays, Roewer’s home and workplace organizing services are typically

done with clients, not for them, he emphasizes. “We help people create systems out of chaos and build a better life,” Roewer says. “We come to the rescue of people who are too busy or too confused.” Newer organizers at The Organizing Agency charge around $50 an hour, while those with more experience command up to $150. Roewer has met with clients as many as 24 times, but that’s usually for whole-house projects, he says. He’s available seven days a week, and appointments are four hours long. “You can’t be an expert in everything — most people don’t change their own oil or diagnose their own medical issues, and they’re certainly not going to cut their own hair,” Roewer says. “If organizing is something you’re not good at, it’s OK to ask for assistance — you’re ultimately going to improve your situation faster than struggling on your own.”

How he got the job Roewer was a public school music teacher for seven years, then began planning meetings and conventions for a government contractor. When a friend was out of town, Roewer decided he

was “tired of him complaining about how he couldn’t find his stuff and how disorganized he was,” so he did a “while you were gone” makeover. “I organized his closets, sorted all his consulting paperwork, redid his kitchen,” Roewer recalls. “When he came back and realized what a difference it made, he said, ‘You should do this for a living. People would pay you.’ ” Roewer liked the idea, so in 2004, he started organizing parttime under his company’s first name, Solutions by Scott & Company. He made it his full-time gig in late 2005, and has since expanded the company with the addition of five organizers.

Who would want this job If you haven’t seen your bedroom floor since July, perhaps look elsewhere. Professional organizers

are usually, well, organized, and they need to have a genuine interest in people and how they think. An education background like Roewer has can prove helpful. “You need to be able to teach what you’re doing, not just be a good organizer for your own stuff, because we approach things based on how the client thinks about them,” he says. Visual and spatial skills are helpful, too. When Roewer walks into a house, the client is usually overwhelmed by all the clutter, but the organizer can see beyond it and picture the end result. Project management skills and knowing how to break large tasks into smaller steps are useful. “And definitely some physical and mental stamina,” he adds. “The job can be dirty, it can be hot in the middle of summer, it CONTINUED ON PAGE 22

House Republicans this month proposed a plan that would eliminate some popular student aid programs and impose restrictions on others. The legislation would whittle the suite of eight student loan repayment plans down to two: one standard 10-year plan and one income-based plan. Currently, people can opt to have their monthly loan payment capped to a percentage of their earnings, with the remaining balance of the debt forgiven after 20 to 25 years. The House plan would eliminate that loan forgiveness, but cap the interest payments on the loan after 10 years. The plan by House Republicans would also end a program that wipes away federal student debt for people in the public sector after they have made 10 years’ worth of payments. The changes would apply only to borrowers who enroll after June 2018. DANIELLE DOUGLAS-GABRIEL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

can be cold when we’re hanging Christmas lights.”

How you can get the job Start by connecting with the National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals or the Institute for Challenging Disorganization, which caters to more complicated clients, like hoarders or those with brainbased disorders. NAPO offers basic business courses in addition to classes that cover topics like “organizing 101, how to work with your clients and how to do an organizing assessment,” Roewer says. The association also offers an exam to become a Certified Professional Organizer: To be eligible,

you need to have completed 1,500 hours of relevant work experience in the previous three years, among other requirements. Roewer is a CPO, and certification, while not mandatory, can be appealing to potential clients. He adds that longtime organizers — including himself — often do one-on-one coaching with those interested in the field. And like with any job, practice is crucial: Reorganize your closet and papers regularly. Roewer likens professional organizers to physical trainers. “Just like if you went to the gym alone, you’d get a workout in. But if you had a trainer, they’re going to push you, they’re going to help you, they’re going to watch your form,” he says. “We do the same thing as organizers.” ANGELA HAUPT (FOR EXPRESS)

MUST-SEE THIS WEEK

1 ‘Golden Globes 75th Anniversary Special’ 9 p.m. Wednesday on NBC

Extravagantly majestic The lavish second season of Netflix’s ‘The Crown’ can’t resist going over the top TV REVIEW The lavish second season of “The Crown,” Netflix’s biographical series about the young Queen Elizabeth II, deserves an upgrade in praise. But in striving to be more, the series, which returned Friday with 10 robust new episodes, intermittently becomes too much. Fans likely won’t complain as they devour each bit of it — the way Elizabeth (Claire Foy) slathers butter on her baked goods as a means of quietly tormenting her VIP guest, Jacqueline Kennedy (Jodi Balfour), during a teatime tete-a-tete between two women with markedly different approaches to 20th-century fame. This is the kind of show you watch with hopes that it will give you a bit too much of everything.

That said, “The Crown” brings surprisingly less oomph this time and takes noticeably more liberties with historical fact and chronology. We return more or less where we left off in the late 1950s: Winston Churchill has been replaced (which sadly means no more John Lithgow) by a rapid sequence of milquetoasty prime ministers (Jeremy Northam as Anthony Eden; Anton Lesser as Harold Macmillan), while Elizabeth and her husband, Philip (Matt Smith), have fallen into a cyclical pattern of marital frostiness. She’s certain he’s cheating; the palace cognoscenti are certain he’s cheating; viewers are certain he’s cheating; yet “The Crown” remains coy about catching Philip in the act.

Truth or tale? Matt Smith, who plays Prince Philip, discussed with The Hollywood Reporter why “The Crown” only hints at his character’s rumored infidelity: “Drama [can help] shine a light on ... the rumors that we know to be out there, and this show explores the difficulties that they face in their marriage. … It’s your duty as an actor to sort of make a choice about that, and then you let the audience make a choice about it afterward.” (EXPRESS)

Overall, this season works best in storylines that handle both the past and the future: Shy, jugeared Prince Charles (Julian Baring) is shipped off to the dreary Gordonstoun School in Scotland,

his father’s alma mater. While Charles suffers, the viewers get to flash back to the unenviable details of Philip’s adolescence, which was rife with tragedy, neglect and (you guessed it) Nazis. As the queen, Foy certainly dominates the many scenes she’s in, but the show seems more interested this time in developing every other character but hers, perhaps as a way of preparing viewers for a bigger shift next season, when “Broadchurch’s” Olivia Colman is expected to take over the role of an older queen with a fresh set of issues to face. If nothing else, “The Crown” makes it abundantly clear that Elizabeth’s job is a lifelong — and often redundant — burden.

NETFLIX

It’s the Queen (Claire Foy) vs. Jackie Kennedy (Jodi Balfour) in Season 2 of “The Crown.”

“Will & Grace” stars Eric McCormack and Debra Messing host a pre-recorded special looking back at the best-of moments from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s awards show.

2 ‘A Christmas Story Live!’ 7 p.m. Sunday on Fox

Looks like “Cash Cab” host and comedian Ben Bailey is still picking up contestants the old-fashioned way.

MARC SILVER | BROADCAST MUSE

Driving test: TV quiz ‘Cash Cab’ is back from the chop shop What TV series took place entirely in a cab and won three Emmys? No, it’s not “Taxi.” The answer is “Cash Cab,” the Discovery Channel game show that ran from 2005 to 2012. Comedian Ben Bailey drove an actual New York City cab, picked up actual passengers and then gave them the chance to win actual greenbacks by answering trivia questions en route to their destination. But three wrong answers and they were ejected, penniless, onto the cold, hard Big Apple streets. Now, “Cash Cab” is back with a six-episode cycle (wrapping up Sunday at 10 p.m. and 10:30

p.m.). The show might seem fresher if they renamed it “Uber Bucks” and gave free rides to the winners. Then again, there’s something quaint about hailing a cab! Bailey is in the driver’s seat once more, a bit more grizzled at 47. He’s got his cabbie license and deftly braves NYC traffic while playing quizmaster. The folks at Discovery won’t reveal how he manages to drive and ask questions at the same time, but they promise me “he is very safe, not putting anyone in danger.” This version has a few updates. Contestants can now get help via social media by posting one of their trivia questions on the show’s Facebook page for answers from followers.

$18.3M

And in each episode, a celebrity hops into the cab to help — Scott Bakula and Brooke Shields among them. You may wonder: Why revive “Cash Cab”? “Jeopardy” has far higher stakes (record cash winnings on “Cash Cab” are a relatively measly $6,200). And “Billy on the Street” has perfected the art of the edgy New York City quiz show, with categories like “Is Beyonce Scared of That?” Perhaps the point is simply this: Despite the new celebrity element, “Cash Cab” has a no-frills vibe that is refreshing in our Age of Hype. And contestants clearly have a good time, even when they lose. Two Alabama brothers jokingly pummeled each other when they botched their answers and didn’t seem too bummed out when they lost all their cash by naming Thomas Jefferson as the last unopposed U.S. presidential candidate. James Monroe was the one. Read Marc’s previous columns at washingtonpost.com/muse

“If you have any conscience at all, this video of a starving polar bear will break your heart. We cannot look away.” @MARYNMCK, on the viral video of an emaciated polar bear shot by Paul Nicklen, a National Geographic photographer, for the nonprofit SeaLegacy. The video shows the bear, seemingly near death, searching for food on an iceless stretch of land inside the Arctic Circle. Nicklen said in an Instagram caption that his team was “pushing through their tears” while filming. The powerful image stuck with many viewers, who noted the effects of climate change on polar bears.

“Can it really be called ‘crashing’ if you’ve successfully and rightfully passed several security checkpoints to be there?” @JENNIFEREMORROW, on James Franco’s “Saturday Night Live” monologue. He was hardly the star of his own monologue, as he took supposedly “random” questions from the audience, including actor and longtime Franco friend Seth Rogen, who said he’d won the lottery to get into Saturday’s show. While the two were bickering over Franco’s “SNL” hosting abilities, actor Jonah Hill showed up too and joined in on roasting Franco. If that wasn’t enough, actor Steve Martin appeared in the cheap seats and also chimed in.

“They were tied up from someone who could have been in genuine harm that wasn’t of their own doing.” RERRY CHRISTMAS, a commenter at

gizmodo.com, on a YouTube video posted last week on TGFbro, a channel run by pranksters Jay Swingler and Romell Henry. In the video, Swingler put his head in a microwave and filled it with Polyfilla, a hardening paste. Although he included a “breathing tube,” it eventually became blocked as the material expanded. U.K. firefighters spent an hour freeing Swingler’s head, and vented their frustrations on Twitter.

“Y’all swinging lightsabers, mayne?” @SUCKAFREETEE, making a meme of actor Terrence Howard saying “mayne,” which he famously said over 200 times in the movie “Hustle & Flow.” It all started over the weekend when Twitter user @FlowsAndolini asked for Howard to be photoshopped as a “Star Wars” Jedi, which triggered hilarious “Star Wars”-related captions like “ay mayne u was sposed to be the chosen one mayne,” from @HPJArt. The Jedi meme inspired further images of Howard as popular movie and TV characters, such as Mayne of Steel, Iron Mayne and characters from “Game of Thrones.”

Use of term ‘celebrity’ is generous here

Prince hosting most boring bachelor party Prince William is planning his brother Prince Harry’s stag party — similar to what Americans call a bachelor party — ahead of Harry’s wedding to Meghan Markle in May. “Don’t expect anything wild,” a source told Us Weekly. The magazine previously reported that William will serve as Harry’s best man in the wedding, which royal officials said will take place at Windsor Castle’s St. George’s Chapel. (EXPRESS)

Jonathan Cheban, noted friend of Kim Kardashian West and self-proclaimed “Foodgod,” is reportedly contacting D.C.-area restaurants to inquire about “publicity via celebrity endorsement.” The Washington City Paper obtained an email sent by a person named Julie to a local blogger, saying Cheban is looking for eateries interested in paying for promotional content on Cheban’s social media during his Jan. 1 visit. The email describes a $3,500 package that includes “1 still post to his Instagram @foodgod, a meet & greet with the chef or owner, 1 tweet posted to his Twitter account.” Medium Rare’s Mark Bucher told the City Paper he received a similar inquiry.
