The Miami Herald reported that county police officers are limiting the paper tickets they issue as the department awaits a new — and long-delayed — electronic system next month. Officials didn’t want to order new paper tickets and then have leftovers. So with many officers down to their last ticket book of 25 citations, only the worst violators are being cited. (AP)

‘I only keep the good friends’ POTOMAC, MD. It’s been 40 years since Harriet Fridkin has had full use of her body. Multiple sclerosis slowly has seized her, leaving her unable to move any part of herself except her head. So, five nights a week in her Potomac, Md., home, Fridkin, 75, plays gracious host to her friends. They arrive to visit, always on schedule, sometimes to give her a therapeutic massage, sometimes to feed her, sometimes to unload about their day and get her timetested advice for an hour or two. It’s been this way for 21 years. “I like to talk to people,” said Fridkin, her voice softer than it used to be. “If people have problems I like to help solve them.” Her friends, who have called themselves “Harriet’s Harem” since 1996, have created a support group remarkable in its loyalty and longevity. A calendar goes out once a month, each day is assigned to a friend, and there’s never a day that’s left open. If her nose itches, they’ll

scratch it; if she’s thirsty they’ll give her a drink of water. Mostly, they enjoy her company and marvel at her happy outlook on life and unflinching humor. “I only keep the good friends,” Fridkin says with a big smile. “The other ones, I don’t keep around.” One of Fridkin’s favorite nights of the week is Monday, when her bridge group comes to her home to play cards twice a month, just as they have since before she became immobile.

“She gives so much more to all of us than I can tell you. She gives us the inspiration to go on, to overcome anything.” JUDY FELDMAN, 83, one of the organizers of a group that has visited their friend Harriet Fridkin, who has multiple sclerosis, for 21 years

And she’s a book lover and devoted QVC shopper. “She is living, she’s not just existing,” said Judy Feldman, 83, one of the original organizers of Harriet’s Harem. “It’s astounding.” Fridkin, who has three children and six grandchildren, lives in Potomac with her husband of 54 years, Jerry Fridkin. She has a caregiver who helps take care of her during the day. But it is difficult for her to leave the house, which is where Harriet’s Harem comes in. “It helps her keep up with the outside world,” said her daughter Marjorie Fridkin, 43. Marjorie, who is a general surgeon at Garrett Regional Medical Center in western Maryland, said she’s explained to patients and families over the years about her mother’s harem and how helpful it is. But she’s never seen it even close to replicated. “Without social interaction, people are like a plant that doesn’t get watered,” Fridkin’s daughter said, looking at her mother. “The world comes to you. It has kept you who you are.” ALLISON KLEIN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

McAuliffe pushes Va. to get more teachers VIRGINIA In a bid to curtail Virginia’s teacher shortage, Gov. Terry McAuliffe took emergency action Monday to get aspiring instructors into classrooms faster by streamlining education requirements. McAuliffe ordered the Virginia Board of Education to implement an emergency regulation that would allow the state’s public colleges and universities to start offering undergraduate students a major in education by March 1. “The teacher shortage is a growing crisis that we have to stop and reverse if we are serious about the commonwealth’s economic future,” McAuliffe said in an emailed statement. Currently, most public colleges

program, which often requires a fifth year of school, he said. Livingston said McAuliffe’s order would reduce the cost of pursuing a career in education. Some students, he said, opt not to enter teaching programs because of the cost. “We think this is a bold move on the part of the governor. We anticipate the State Board of Education will take the charge seriously,” Livingston said. Robert C. Pianta, dean of the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia, said the change would streamline a process that can require two degrees and five or more years into a process taking just four years. That change will mean students will get more exposure to the classroom sooner, he said. That experience, Pianta said, is “essential to their success.” DEBBIE TRUONG (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Montgomery expected to take symbolic step on deportation protection MONTGOMERY COUNTY While they agree that it’s largely symbolic, members of the Montgomery County Council are expected to take a stand today in favor of county residents who under President Trump could lose the deportation protections they have enjoyed for years. The Trump administration has indicated that it will end temporary protected status for some immigrants who fled war or natural disaster to find safe haven in the U.S. The administration also plans to end the Obama-era program

known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, that allows undocumented immigrants brought to the country as children to legally remain in the U.S. Both groups could face deportation if their status is revoked. The all-Democratic council is expected to unanimously pass a resolution to urge the federal government to allow the immigrants to remain in the U.S. While the resolution carries no legal authority, lawmakers and activists say it is an important symbolic step for the state’s most populous — and one of its most diverse — jurisdictions. There are more than 325,000 immigrants with temporary protected status across the country

and Maryland is home to the second-largest share, according to the resolution. Gustavo Torres, executive director of CASA de Maryland, said that even if the council doesn’t have the power to change federal policy, the resolution is a way of supporting residents who “are very scared.” Torres said a number of DACA and TPS holders have established businesses in the county and have set down roots, and are anxiously awaiting a solution from Congress before their protections expire. “The message from the county is saying: You are welcome. You are making a contribution, and we are with you,” Torres said. RACHEL SIEGEL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

GOP Senate field gets bigger Conservative preacher joins 2018 Virginia race with attacks on rivals VIRGINIA Outspoken preacher E.W. Jackson on Monday announced his campaign for the Republican nomination to face Democratic U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, giving Corey Stewart competition for evangelical and far-right voters. Out of the gate, Jackson attempted to out-insult the provocative Stewart, saying Stewart “has had some dealings”

with the Muslim Brotherhood, a transnational Islamic group, and “has never seen a tax increase … he Jackson didn’t like.” Jackson did not elaborate but may have been referring to the Prince William Board of County Supervisors, of which Stewart is chairman, approving the construction of a mosque and the times the county has raised taxes. In response, Stewart said: “E.W. knows I’m a Catholic. It’s overthe-top. He must be off his meds.”

The barbs came after state Republicans spent the weekend at their annual retreat discussing ways to rebound from the disastrous election results last month. During the event, Del. Nicholas J. “Nick” Freitas jumped into the Senate primary. Ivan Raiklin, a veteran, has also filed to run. Jackson dismissed Kaine, who nonpartisan analysts favor to win a second term and who helped Hillary Clinton win Virginia as her running mate, as “little Timmy Kaine” and “not a person of gravity.” JENNA PORTNOY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Final push for Jones, Moore ALABAMA Alabama’s U.S. Senate campaign entered its last day Monday with the candidates making final appeals for votes and a war of robocalls between President Trump and former President Barack Obama. There was a flurry of bogus news as well. Trump recorded a call touting Republican Roy Moore, accused by several women of sexual misconduct, and saying Republicans needed his vote in the Senate. Obama and former Vice President Joe Biden are supporting Democrat Doug Jones, seeking

to break the GOP’s lock on statewide office in Alabama. With polls opening today, a flurry of bogus news stories appeared on social media spreading misinformation about the race. One website falsely proclaimed that one of the women who have accused Moore of sexual misconduct had recanted. Moore’s detractors took to social media to falsely claim that Moore had written in a 2011 textbook that

women shouldn’t hold office. In Birmingham, Jones accused Moore of disappearing during the campaign’s closing days and claimed he wasn’t even in Alabama over the weekend. “We’re making sure our message is getting across while Roy Moore hides behind whoever he’s hiding behind,” Jones said. Moore has made only a few public appearances since women came forward to accuse him of

sexual misconduct years ago — including one who said he molested her when she was 14. He was in Montgomery for a Christmas party on Sunday, but his whereabouts were otherwise unclear. Moore was set to appear Monday night at a rally in rural southeast Alabama with ex-Trump chief strategist Steve Bannon. Alabama Democrats see the election for the seat previously held by Trump’s attorney general Jeff Sessions as a chance to renounce a history littered with politicians whose race-baiting and bombast have soiled the state’s reputation. Republicans see the vote as chance to ratify their conservative values and protect Trump’s agenda.

Since he was 3 years old, Ryan’s parents have been capturing videos of him opening toys, playing with them and “reviewing” them for videos posted on their YouTube channel, “Ryan ToysReview.” Ryan has become a multimillionaire, according to Forbes magazine’s list of the highestpaid YouTube entrepreneurs. He was ranked number eight, having brought in $11 million in revenue between June 1, 2016, and June 1, 2017. Children everywhere have become hooked, even starting their own similar channels. Ryan’s first video barely had any views. About four months in, his channel saw an explosion of traffic, driven by a video of Ryan reviewing a hundred toys at once. In January of 2016, he hit 1 million subscribers. Now, he’s at more than 10 million. Each time someone clicks on one of Ryan’s videos, his family makes money. There are ads and links to ads all over. “If a product gets 10 million, 20 millions views, and you see that Ryan loves it … it has a huge impact at retail,” Jim Silver, CEO of review site Toys, Tots, Pets, and More, told The Verge. Women to Congress: Investigate Trump POLITICS As the country grapples with a national reckoning over sexual misconduct allegations against powerful men, three women who accused the most high-profile man in America again questioned Monday why their claims did nothing to stop him from winning the presidency. It was “heartbreaking” for women to go public with their claims against Donald Trump last year, only to see him ascend to the Oval Office, said Samantha Holvey, a former Miss USA contestant who in October 2016 said Trump inappropriately inspected pageant participants a decade earlier. “I put myself out there for the entire world, and nobody cared,” Holvey said Monday on “Megyn Kelly Today” on NBC. During the TV appearance and a news conference in New York, Holvey sat alongside Jessica Leeds, a New York woman who said Trump groped her on a plane in the late 1970s, and Rachel Crooks, who said he kissed her on the lips at Trump Tower in 2005. The women called for Congress to investigate these allegations amid the dramatic shift

happening nationwide in response to charges of sexual misconduct. The White House’s position — reiterated in a statement Monday — is that Trump’s accusers are lying and that the issue was settled when he was elected president after the stories emerged. The women who spoke Monday recounted their allegations against Trump, saying they felt threatened and disgusted by the encounters. “I was shocked,” Crooks told Kelly after describing Trump kissing her at Trump Tower, where she was a receptionist. “Devastated. It happened so fast. ... I wish I would’ve been courageous enough to say, ‘What’s going on and you need to stop this.’ ”

Leeds said at the news conference Monday that none of the women were speaking publicly for fame, but instead were doing it because they felt it was the right thing to do. “None of us want this attention,” she said. “None of us are comfortable with it. ... But this is important, so when asked, we speak out.” The news conference was organized by Brave New Films, a nonprofit group launched by Robert Greenwald, an Emmy Award-winning producer, with the goal of promoting activism around progressive causes through short, low-budget documentaries. Congress faces loaded agenda in next 2 weeks

ASTRID RIECKEN (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

Precision sacrificed for speed GOP’s rush to finalize its tax plan has led to surprises, uncertainties POLITICS Republicans are moving their tax plan toward final passage at stunning speed, blowing past Democrats before they’ve had time to fully mobilize against it but leaving the measure vulnerable to expensive problems popping up in their massive, complex plan. Questionable special-interest provisions have been stuffed in along the way, out of public view and in some cases in the dead of night. Drafting errors by exhausted staff need fixes, which must be tackled by congressional negotiators working to reconcile competing versions of the legislation passed separately by the House and the Senate. It has been a little more than a month since the $1.5 trillion legislation was introduced in the House, and in that short time it has cleared the two key committees in the House and Senate and won approval on the floors of both chambers, all without a single Democratic vote. If Trump signs the bill as planned before Christmas, that would mean a journey of less than two months between introduction and final passage. The specific legislation that probably will become law, sold

as a middle-class tax cut but featuring a massive corporate rate reduction at its center, is moving from release toward passage without any hearings, unusual for a bill of such magnitude. And as it tumbled along, it picked up some startling new features. Even some Republicans were stunned when the final Senate version, which was passed at 1:50 a.m. Dec. 2, restored the alternative minimum tax for corporations. The tax, aimed at keeping companies from shirking their tax duties entirely, had been repealed in the House bill and earlier versions of the Senate measure. Restoring the corporate alternative minimum tax created $40 billion in revenue for the bill, which helped Republicans come in under complex budgetary guidelines saying the legislation can’t go over the $1.5 trillion the GOP has agreed to add to the deficit over the next decade. Now, as quickly as it reappeared, the corporate alternative minimum tax probably will disappear again. Republican lawmakers widely agree that it doesn’t work, but it remains a mystery where they’ll find revenue to offset that change.

Tax plan twists The tax plan process offered some surprises even before the drama of the Senate passing its version at about 1:50 a.m. Dec. 2. (TWP) AFFORDABLE CARE ACT: A provision

repealing an ACA requirement for most Americans to carry insurance or pay fines was added to the Senate bill with little warning over the course of an afternoon, a decision that is projected to leave 13 million more Americans uninsured in a decade but that would give Republicans $330 billion to pay for other things. ‘EXCISE TAX’: The release of the

House bill stunned manufacturers when it had an “excise tax” on purchases from U.S. companies’ foreign subsidiaries that some said could drive them out of business. The provision was later watered down, but companies are still fighting to keep it out of the final bill.

It’s all part of the breakneck pace of work on the tax plan, which contrasts with the nearly 1½ years that passed between when Reagan unveiled his initial version of the 1986 tax plan and its ultimate passage into law. The less far-ranging tax cuts

Trump signs new space policy directive to send Americans to Moon, Mars

that President George W. Bush signed in 2001 took four months to become law after the release of Bush’s initial blueprint. And the Affordable Care Act took nearly a year to complete, including a congressional summer recess featuring angry town hall meetings that turned public sentiment sharply against the bill. Many lobbyists, Democrats and other observers expect to find the final version of the plan, which could be filed late this week, just as full of surprises as the various iterations that have already appeared. But as they gun for a legislative win that has eluded them this year, Republicans show little interest in slowing down. “The frenzy … to get it done and have a Christmas present for America — No. 1, I think it’s unnecessary; it’s a self-imposed deadline. And No. 2, it makes the possibility for error much greater,” said Steve Bell, an adviser at the Bipartisan Policy Center who was staff director of the Senate Budget Committee during the 1986 tax effort. “This is a rush without a reason other than the political desire for a Rose Garden signing ceremony.” ERICA WERNER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Start the countdown clock on a momentous two weeks for President Trump and the GOP-run Congress. On top of finalizing a tax bill, here are other items on the agenda that lawmakers are trying to get done by Dec. 22. DONNA CASSATA (AP) Government spending Lawmakers trying to work out a sweeping budget deal got a temporary reprieve from a partial government shutdown when they passed a two-week stopgap bill Thursday. Republicans want a major boost in defense spending. Democrats want a similar increase for domestic agencies. Congress also has to figure out how much disaster aid should be directed to Puerto Rico, Texas and Florida.

Children’s health Fresh federal money for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) ran out Oct. 1, a blow to the popular program that provides low-cost medical care to more than 8 million children. Some states have relied on unspent funds, while others got a short-term reprieve in the twoweek spending bill. Lawmakers hope to agree on a long-term solution for a program that costs about $14 billion a year.

Immigration Democrats want to act now to protect young immigrants who came to the U.S. illegally as children, with demands that a solution to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program is included in any year-end spending deal. Young immigrants, known as Dreamers, face deportation in a few months after Trump reversed administrative protections. Republicans say it can wait till next year and shouldn’t bog down the broad budget agreement.

Pipe bomb detonated inside NYC’s subway Man in custody after ‘attempted terrorist attack’ inspired by ISIS NEW YORK A man inspired by Islamic State extremists strapped on a crude pipe bomb, slipped unnoticed into the nation’s busiest subway system and set off the device during the morning rush hour Monday, authorities said. The only serious wounds were to the suspect, Akayed Ullah, a 27-year-old Bangladeshi immigrant and former cab driver, who was being treated for burns to his hands and abdomen, authorities said. But the attack sent commuters fleeing through a smoky passageway, and three people suffered headaches and ringing

ears from the first blast in the subway in more than two decades. “This was an attempted terrorist attack,” Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio said of the blast, which occurred in the area of the Port Authority Bus Terminal, near Times Square. President Trump said the explosion highlighted the need to change immigration policies, including the type of family-based visa Ullah obtained to come to the U.S. in 2011. Such visas are “incompatible with national security,” Trump said. “America must fix its lax immigration system, which allows far too many dangerous, inadequately vetted people to access our country.” Officials said Ullah was inspired by ISIS but apparently did not have direct contact with the

group and likely acted alone. Gov. Andrew Cuomo said there was no evidence of a larger plot. He Ullah said officials were exploring whether Ullah had been on authorities’ radar, but there was no indication he was. Investigators described the bomb as a low-tech explosive device attached to Ullah with Velcro and plastic ties. They said it was ignited with a Christmas light, matches and a nine-volt battery. Cuomo said there was reason to believe he looked at bomb-making instructions online. Investigators said it was not clear if the bomb was set off intentionally or prematurely.

KINGDOM EASING SOME SOCIAL RESTRICTIONS

Saudi Arabia lifts ban on movie theaters

Saudi Arabia said Monday that it would allow cinemas to operate in the strictly conservative kingdom for the first time since the early 1980s, the latest sign of a broader government push to relax some social restrictions. The reform efforts are being led by 32-year-old Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who is increasingly at the helm of the kingdom’s planning even though his father, King Salman, remains the ultimate authority. Judge affirms right to enlist for trans people MILITARY A federal judge on Monday denied the Trump administration’s request to delay an order requiring the military to begin accepting transgender recruits starting Jan. 1, saying the argument for more time seemed based on “vague claims.” “The Court is not persuaded that Defendants will be irreparably injured by” meeting the Jan. 1 deadline, U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly said. The ruling from Kollar-Kotelly follows her earlier opinion blocking President Trump’s ban on military recruitment of transgender men and women that possibly would have forced the dismissal of current service members starting in March. Trump’s order reversed an Obama-era policy allowing transgender people to serve openly and receive funding for sex-reassignment surgery. The Pentagon said Monday it will comply with the court order. After the Jan. 1 start was cleared Monday, former Navy secretary Raymond Edwin Mabus Jr. said in a statement that allowing transgender candidates to enlist is not a complicated process and that nearly all the necessary preparation had been completed by the time he left office more than a year ago. The Department of Justice said Monday that the department will ask an appeals court to put on hold the Jan. 1 requirement “as we evaluate next steps.” (THE WASHINGTON POST/AP)

REDSKINS TENSION

Norman questions his usage

WIZARDS AT NETS | 7:30 TONIGHT, NBCSWA+

Sidelined point guard wants emerging leader to keep driving offense NBA Before the Wizards faced the Clippers on Saturday, sidelined star John Wall acknowledged how well his running mate has been playing in his absence. “He’s already a lethal scorer,” Wall said of Bradley Beal, “but he’s finding ways to do it in so many other ways, getting downhill and getting to the basket, and a guy like that [who] can score in various ways and get into a rhythm, the basket’s big.” That afternoon, Beal backed up the assessment by shredding the Clippers with a second-half surge that nearly won the game. Beal made all five of his 3-pointers in the second half, finished with 25 points and hit the final shot at the buzzer, but it didn’t count because of a clock malfunction. The matinee performance in a 113-112 loss capped a sizzling

stretch for Beal, who has totaled 110 points in his past three games. Beal scored a career-high 51 points against the Trail Blazers on Dec. 5 and dropped 34 on the Suns two days later. Beal, who said he’s felt almost “unstoppable” lately, will eventually come back to earth. But Wall doesn’t want to be the reason for the inevitable descent. “We got to find a way to still keep him in his rhythm when I come back,” Wall said. “Keep him the same zone that he’s in.” When Wall returns, he’ll assume his role as top dog in the offense and dominant ballhandler. “John is a 20-something-point scorer himself, so do the math,” c o ach S c ot t Bro oks sa id . “There’s going to be less shots, but the bottom line is as long as they’re good shots we have a lot of scorers in our starting lineup.” Beal’s shots may decrease, but his team-leading usage rate can still remain high. There’s room in the Wizards’ pick-and-roll offense for one more ballhandler.

MATT YORK (AP)

Wall willing to let Beal run the show Bradley Beal has scored 110 points in his past three games and said he will maintain an aggressive approach when John Wall returns from a knee injury.

Wall close to returning Point guard John Wall (sore left knee) has missed Washington’s past eight games and has been treated with injections of platelet-rich plasma and lubricating fluid. This weekend, he participated in his first practice in two weeks. He also practiced Monday, but coach Scott Brooks said he didn’t know if Wall would be active tonight in Brooklyn. The Wizards host the Grizzlies on Wednesday. C.B.

“I got to tell him you score the ball so well, at times you can be the point guard,” Wall said. “There’s times I have to take the benefit role to spot-up and

be able to knock down shots the way he’s done for me.” However, Beal’s scoring uptick occurred only after Brooks freed him from point guard duties. After the Dec. 4 debacle in Utah when the Wizards lost by 47 points, Brooks kept Beal off the ball so that point guards Tim Frazier and Tomas Satoransky could set up the offense. When Wall returns, Beal said his mentality will not change. “The ball will probably be in his hands a little bit more because he’s the point guard,” Beal said of Wall, “but I can still be this same aggressive guy, and I plan on doing that.”

After saying he would “take the blame for everything that happened” in a 30-13 loss to the Chargers on Sunday, Redskins corner Josh Norman expressed frustration over how he was deployed. “Of course” he wanted to shadow Keenan Allen instead of staying at his spot on the left side, Norman said in comments published Monday by The Washington Post. “Anybody in the top position where I’m at, that’s what you do, that’s what you want. ... It’s tough to actually go out there and see things happening and then knowing that there’s something that you can do, that you can’t.” He said he didn’t want to “throw anybody under the bus,” but “there’s more that you can get out of me. me.” (TWP)

Wentz out until next season with torn left knee ligament Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz has a torn left ACL and will miss the rest of the season and the playoffs, coach Doug Pederson confirmed. Wentz, a favorite in the MVP race, had an MRI on Monday. He was hurt late in the third quarter Sunday at Los Angeles. Backup Nick Foles rallied the Eagles (11-2) to a 43-35 win over the Rams that secured the NFC East title and put them in first place in the conference with three games left. Wentz, 24, passed for 3,296 yards and set a franchise single-season record with 33 TD passes while tossing only seven interceptions. Foles, 28, led the Eagles to two field goals Sunday. He is 20-17 as a starter in six seasons with Philadelphia — where he began his career — the Rams and the Chiefs. (AP)

League, union investigating protocol used for Savage The NFL and the NFL Players Association said Monday they are investigating how Texans quarterback Tom Savage was allowed to re-enter a loss to the 49ers on Sunday in Houston after absorbing a hit from Elvis Dumervil that left him on the turf with his hands twitching. According to the Texans, Savage was cleared by the unaffiliated neurotrauma consultant to re-enter the game. He played one more series before going to the locker room, and later was ruled out with a concussion. Coach Bill O’Brien said Monday that he wouldn’t have let Savage back in if he’d seen video of the hit. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

2B Starlin Castro After being named an All-Star in three of six seasons with the Cubs, Castro earned the honor for a fourth time this year in his second season with the Yankees. The 27-year-old hit .300 this season with 16 homers and 63 RBIs.

RHP Jorge Guzman According to MLB.com, he becomes the third-ranked prospect in Miami’s farm system. Guzman, who turns 22 next month, has a high-grade fastball that can touch 103 mph. He posted 88 strikeouts in 66⅔ innings of Class A ball this year.

SS Jose Devers The Dominican prospect turned 18 on Dec. 7 and is a cousin of Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers. In 42 games this year with the Yankees’ rookie team in the Gulf Coast League, Devers hit .246 with seven doubles and 15 stolen bases.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, FLA. In the hotel at the first day of baseball’s winter meetings, a few members of the Nationals’ public relations staff huddled behind a monitor and listened to what new manager Dave Martinez was saying Monday on live television. Martinez said all the right things, avoided committing to an opening day lineup and dodged the pitfalls a PR staff might fear from a rookie manager. No one can prepare Martinez for all the questions his job will raise. Much of his success will lie in the moments that leave him to think on his feet and shoulder the spotlight after a decade in Joe Maddon’s shadow. Martinez met with local reporters for the first time since his introductory news conference, talking about the roster and injuries and all the things he’ll need to discuss on a daily basis. He passed the first test. Martinez said he’s already talked to many team leaders, including outfielder Bryce Harper, who is entering the final year of his contract. “Can I lobby right now?”

Don’t hold the cheese

Healthy holiday mindset

Instead of worrying about the season’s indulgences, just relax and enjoy them Every year around holiday time, there’s an influx of articles about how to stick to healthy eating. You may read about how to say no to second helpings or alternate alcoholic drinks with sparkling water to combat calories. That advice is practical, but it focuses too much on what not to do. So, this year, instead of stress, pressure and guilt associated with holiday get-togethers, let’s create a new narrative that will empower you to feel good about yourself and your food choices. Here are seven things to tell yourself this year. CARA ROSENBLOOM (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST) I deserve to enjoy holiday meals without guilt. Yep, it’s just food. You deserve to take pleasure in it. Food is part of traditions and memories, so sample your favorite cookies or mashed potatoes and take time to really enjoy every bite of a reasonable portion. Focus on how your food smells, looks and tastes without distractions. This is called mindful eating, and it’s about fully enjoying what you eat without regret or shame.

What I eat every day matters the most. Worry less about what you eat over the holidays and concentrate

on what you eat year-round instead. If you have a healthy diet in general, a couple of days of celebratory food won’t be detrimental. If you don’t usually eat well, make that a goal in the new year. The holiday season is short-lived. In life, there will always be times when you can’t make your usual healthy choices — and that’s OK.

you’re almost full, stop eating. And remember that you don’t need to make someone else happy by overeating or by denying your hunger. It’s the norm to eat more when a host graciously offers more, but it doesn’t need to be.

I will eat when I’m hungry, not when I’m feeling emotional. Many of us eat when we’re lonely, bored, sad or stressed, and those emotions can run wild at holiday time. Even the stress of being with certain family members can trigger people to overeat. There are more effective remedies for dealing with these feelings than food. The answer is different for everyone, but calling a friend, exercising or practicing meditation can work for some people. Take time to learn what works best for you.

I have the power to control my portions.

I don’t need to “healthify” my beloved and traditional holiday recipe.

Only you can decide how much food to eat, and that decision should be based on listening to your body. If you’re still hungry, have another bite. But when

Enjoy your favorites as they should be — it’s just once a year! Really — no one wants sugarless sugar cookies or eggnog made from almond milk and

flaxseeds.

I promise not to comment on the size, shape or weight of my friends and relatives. Their weight is their business, not yours. The same is true for you — no one should judge you or comment on your weight, either. And if you are met with a rude comment about your appearance, it’s fine to tell someone why it’s not OK to talk about your weight.

I will enjoy quality time with people I love. A very long-term (75-plus years) study at Harvard has been examining what makes people e happy over the course of their ir lives. And guess what? It’s not a number on a scale or how many y cookies they eat. Close relaationships are the key to longgterm health and happiness. So o this year, mark the holidays by y spending time with people you u love, and try not to fret too much h about what you will have for dinnner. Embrace the joy of festive e meals without feelings of stress ss and guilt, which should never be e part of healthy eating.

A review of 15 studies that analyzed more than 200,000 people has found that eating a little bit of cheese each day can be good for you. The paper, published in the European Journal of Nutrition, concluded that those who ate small amounts of cheese daily (about 40 grams) had a 14 percent lower risk of developing heart disease and were 10 percent less likely to have a stroke than those who rarely or never ate cheese, Time reports. While cheese does have high levels of saturated fat, the authors note that cheese is high in calcium, protein and probiotics. But that doesn’t mean you should inhale all the cheese in sight. The people who had the lowest risks of heart disease and stroke ate around that daily threshold of 40 grams (just under 1 ½ ounces). Anyy more and the risk went up. (EXPRESS)

fit+wellness Dad’s back in the back seat

A hole in the heart at Christmastime Q. It is my first Christmas since the death of an older half sister I was very close to. My husband’s family is big into celebrations and we usually spend a lot of time with them in December, but I am not up to it this year. I love my in-laws and don’t want to hurt them or make them feel they have to take care of me. STILL GRIEVING I’m sorry. The ugly underbelly of the tra-la-las is the marking of time that accentuates grief and loss. But I think more and more people are understanding of that. And “a lot of time” suggests leeway — to opt out of certain events, leave early, come late or even spontaneously hole up someplace comfortable and alone when overcome. The key is clear communication, and your husband can

help. Lay out expectations in advance so people are less likely to feel surprised and stung, which would add to your stress. Sample script: “With the loss Jane’s been going through, she needs lots of time for quiet reflection and healing. I know you all understand that she won’t be able to attend as many of the festivities as usual, but she sends her love and will be there in spirit.”

Are your protests so subtle he can brush them off, or so pointed that it makes him push back harder? There’s a sweet spot somewhere, so choose your battles. It’s not about rolling out the red carpet for her manipulative behavior, but rather about choosing tangible specifics to address. Don’t make it seem like an all-out attack against her. Prioritize your worries (the friends piece seems uberimportant), and couch your complaints in a message of love and concern that seeks to keep him happy, not necessarily to break them up. In the meantime, stay in contact with communication that is not about her (your life, shared interests, your fandom of Steve from “Stranger Things”) to keep your connection strong. Send questions to Dr. Andrea Bonior at baggage@wpost .com. Andrea is a licensed clinical psychologist and hosts a live chat Tuesdays at 1 p.m. at washingtonpost.com. Your questions may be used in the chats.

Chat with Dr. Andrea!

Starting today at 1 p.m., Dr. Andrea Bonior, who has been helping readers with Baggage Check since 2005, will begin hosting a weekly live chat at washingtonpost.com. Submit any questions you have for Dr. Andrea’s first live discussion at wapo.st/baggagechecklive and your query may be answered during the chat. (EXPRESS)

The Golden Globes’ big curveballs

Top nominees for the 2018 Golden Globes These are the leading contenders facing off at the Jan. 7 ceremony. Best motion picture, drama “Call Me by Your Name”; “Dunkirk”; “The Post”; “The Shape of Water”; “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”

Jordan Peele

Best motion picture, comedy or musical “The Disaster Artist”; “Get Out”; “The Greatest Showman”; “I, Tonya”; “Lady Bird”

Christopher Plummer

Film snubs “Get Out” was left out of both the best screenplay and best director categories, though it did land a nod for best comedy film. Jordan Peele’s buzzed-about directorial debut had already generated some Golden Globe controversy after it was announced that the satirical horror film would compete as a comedy. Given the film’s incisive commentary on racism, many felt the film was worthy of recognition beyond that (or perhaps any existing) genre. “‘Get Out’ is a documentary,” Peele declared in a wry tweet last month. The film is still a strong contender for a screenplay nod at the Academy Awards. Greta Gerwig was also left off the best director list, though her acclaimed dramedy “Lady Bird” did make the cut for best comedy film and screenplay. Gerwig and Peele would have added some excitement to the best director category, which has historically been dominated by white men. Barbra Streisand is the only woman to have won best director at the ceremony, which celebrates its 75th anniversary in January. No black director has ever taken home the honor.

Kumail Nanjiani’s well-reviewed romantic comedy “The Big Sick” earned zero nominations.

Netflix’s “Mudbound,” which topped Washington Post critic Ann Hornaday’s best movies of 2017 list, was shut out of the best picture category, though Mary J. Blige landed a best supporting actress nod. Perhaps the HFPA isn’t ready to recognize films produced by streaming networks?

Greta Gerwig

“Mudbound”

Tiffany Haddish, breakout star of this summer’s hit “Girls Trip,” was snubbed in the best supporting actress category.

Film surprises

“The Big Sick”

Ridley Scott’s “All the Money in the World” earned three nominations, including one for best director. The drama, about the 1973 kidnapping of 16-year-old J. Paul Getty III, originally starred Kevin Spacey as billionaire oil tycoon J. Paul Getty. Last month, Spacey was removed from the project after claims of sexual misconduct. Veteran actor Christopher Plummer took on the role and, despite having reshot scenes in the span of a month, landed a best supporting actor nomination. “The Boss Baby,” which featured Alec Baldwin voicing a petulant infant businessman, was a surprise nomination in the best animated feature film category, which overlooked one of this year’s critical darlings, “The Lego Batman Movie.”

Apple announces acquisition of music recognition app Shazam

TV snubs Amazon’s “Transparent” and HBO’s “Veep” were noticeably absent from the top categories this year. “Transparent” accolades certainly would have been tricky to navigate in the wake of sexual misconduct allegations against actor Jeffrey Tambor. The actor appeared to announce his departure from the show last month, but The New York Times reported last week that Tambor may return to the dramedy after all. “Veep” has long been an HFPA favorite, but was edged out.

TV surprises “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” earned a nod for best TV comedy, as well as a best actress nomination for Rachel Brosnahan. Amazon’s delightful new comedy

Katherine Langford

— about a housewife-turnedaspiring comedian in 1950’s New York — has been getting favorable reviews, but it’s still surprising to see it here since the show has been streaming for less than two weeks. Showtime’s “SMILF“ also landed in the best TV comedy category, with creator-writer-director Frankie Shaw earning a best actress nod. It’s also pretty shocking to see newcomer Katherine Langford, the star of Netflix’s controversial series “13 Reasons Why,” in the best actress category alongside prestigious drama stars including Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) and Claire Foy (“The Crown”).

UNIVERSAL PICTURES, LIONSGATE, NETFLIX, SONY PICTURES AND GETTY IMAGES

The 2018 Golden Globe nominations were dominated by expected names and titles like HBO’s “Big Little Lies,” FX’s “Feud: Bette and Joan” and Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water.” But like every year, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association threw some head-scratchers our way. These are the biggest snubs and surprises. BETHONIE BUTLER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Best actress in a motion picture, drama Jessica Chastain, “Molly’s Game”; Sally Hawkins, “The Shape of Water”; Frances McDormand, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”; Meryl Streep, “The Post”; Michelle Williams, “All the Money in the World” Best actor in a motion picture, drama Timothee Chalamet, “Call Me by Your Name”; Daniel Day-Lewis, “Phantom Thread”; Tom Hanks, “The Post”; Gary Oldman, “Darkest Hour”; Denzel Washington, “Roman J. Israel, Esq.” Best actress in a motion picture, comedy or musical Judi Dench, “Victoria & Abdul”; Helen Mirren, “The Leisure Seeker”; Margot Robbie, “I, Tonya”; Saoirse Ronan, “Lady Bird”; Emma Stone, “Battle of the Sexes” Best actor in a motion picture, comedy or musical Steve Carell, “Battle of the Sexes”; Ansel Elgort, “Baby Driver”; James Franco, “The Disaster Artist”; Hugh Jackman, “The Greatest Showman”; Daniel Kaluuya, “Get Out” Best director, motion picture Guillermo del Toro, “The Shape of Water”; Martin McDonagh, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”; Christopher Nolan, “Dunkirk”; Ridley Scott, “All the Money in the World”; Steven Spielberg, “The Post” Best TV series, drama “The Crown” (Netflix); “Game of Thrones” (HBO); “The Handmaid’s Tale” (Hulu); “Stranger Things” (Netflix); “This Is Us” (NBC) Best TV series, musical or comedy “Blackish” (ABC); “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (Amazon); “Master of None” (Netflix); “SMILF” (Showtime); “Will & Grace” (NBC)

“Every night I lay in bed, tossing and turning out of utter guilt, that I could not bring myself to donate one dollar to Wikipedia that day.” @ZAHLEESI, tweeting about the guilty feeling that comes with using Wikipedia for free. The public encyclopedia has recently been having its annual year-end donation drive. @zahleesi was not the only one experiencing this sentiment. “Do normal people donate money to Wikipedia? Should I feel bad for not donating?” @zmaaaag asked.

the viral work of short fiction The New Yorker published by Kristen Roupenian, called “Cat Person,” about a college woman who has an unwanted sexual experience with a 34-year-old man. The story was shared widely, sparking a discussion about power dynamics between men and women, and gray areas of consent.

“Dude’s a loser with a crappy bomb [whose] crowning life achievement is making my train 36 minutes late.” @KASHANACAULEY, tweeting about New Yorkers’ reactions after a man set off an explosion in the subway near Times Square on Monday. After the attack, other New Yorkers shared similar nonchalant reactions on social media.

“It’s good to be reminded that huge unaccountable companies use our personal data to dunk on us both literally and figuratively.” @KEVINROOSE, reacting to Netflix’s Sunday night diss tweet about its sappy holiday movie: “To the 53 people who’ve watched ‘A Christmas Prince’ every day for the past 18 days: Who hurt you?” Some people did not appreciate the slam. “Why are you calling people out like that Netflix,” @AmandaJuneBell asked.
