Sandusky Case Heads to Trial Ex-coach waives his right to hearing on sex abuse charges
C[Wdm^_b[ $$$
8[bb[\edj[" FW$ Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky stunned a packed courtroom and backed out of a preliminary hearing at the last minute Tuesday, avoiding a faceto-face confrontation with accusers who his lawyer said were just trying to cash in by making up stories of child sex abuse. Sandusky, who came to court with alumni from the Second Mile charity he’s accused of using to lure victims, vowed to “stay the course.” He also waived a January arraignment and requested a jury trial, his lawyer said. A pretrial conference was set for March. His lawyer, Joe Amendola, then spoke before dozens of news cameras on the courthouse steps for an hour, saying that the 10 young men who accuse Sandusky of molesting them as children were just out to profit from civil lawsuits against the coach and Penn State.

A prosecutor said 11 witnesses, most of them Sandusky’s alleged victims, were ready to testify at the hearing. Amendola said he decided to waive the preliminary hearing late
Officials at Juniata College in Pennsylvania said Tuesday that Jerry Sandusky insinuated himself into the school’s football program last year, despite being denied an official position because he failed a background check. Sandusky had sought a volunteer coaching position in 2010, more than a year after a high school where he volunteered began investigating his contact with a student there. Sandusky attended practices and games despite directives that he couldn’t associate with the team, school spokesman John Wall said. (AP)

Facebook is making it easier for people who express suicidal thoughts on the social networking site to get help. A program launched Tuesday enables users to instantly connect with a crisis counselor through Facebook’s “chat” messaging system. The service is the latest tool from Facebook aimed at improving safety on its site, which has more than 800 million users. Earlier this year, Facebook announced changes to how users report bullying, offensive content and fake profiles. “One of the big goals here is to get the person in distress into the right help as soon as possible,” Fred Wolens, public policy manager at Facebook, told The Associated Press.

Five people died, including the attacker, and 122 others were wounded, officials said. It was not immediately clear what motivated the attack in the Place Saint-Lambert square in the city in eastern Belgium. Interior Ministry official Peter Mertens said the attack did not involve terrorism, but he did not explain why. Officials identified the gunman as Norodine Amrani, 33, a Liege resident who they said had done jail time for offenses involving guns, drugs and sexual abuse. He was among the dead, though it was unclear how he died. T he ot her dead were a n 18-month-old toddler; two boys, ages 15 and 17; and a 75-year-old woman, officials said.

Amrani had been summoned for police questioning on Tuesday, Liege Prosecutor Danielle Reynders said, but the reason for that was unclear. A mrani left his home and walked alone to the plaza, where he got onto a platform that gave him an ideal view of the square below, officials said. From there, he lobbed three hand grenades toward a bus shelter that serves 1,800 buses a day before opening fire upon the crowd. The explosions sent shards of glass from the bus shelter flying across a wide area. “I heard a loud boom,” said witness Dimitri Degryse. “I thought it was something on my car that was broken or something. Then a few seconds after a second boom, and I saw all the glass breaking; I saw people running, screaming.” Herman Van Rompuy, an ex-Belgian prime minister who is the president of the European Council, said he was badly shaken by the attack. “There is no explanation whatsoever,” Van Rompuy said. “It leaves me perplexed and shocked.” R AF CASERT (AP)
Scientists Closer to ‘God Particle’ =[d[lW

Physicists are closing in on an elusive subatomic particle that, if found, would confirm a long-held understanding about why matter has mass and how the universe’s fundamental building blocks behave. Few people outside physics can fully comprehend the search for the Higgs boson, which was first hypothesized 40 years ago. But proving that the “God particle” actually exists would be “a vindication of the equations we’ve been using all these years,” said one Nobel laureate. Scientists announced Tuesday that they had found hints but
7 Coij[ho je KdbeYa Determining the mass of the Higgs boson would help focus scientists’ search for other new physics theories. The particle, if it exists, is hard to find not because it is tiny, but rather because it is hard to create, physicists say. Frank Wilczek, a Nobel laureate and physics professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said finding it would tie up a loose end of the so-called standard model of physics. (AP)
no definitive proof of the particle that is believed to be a basic component of the universe. They hope to determine whether it exists by next year. The revelations from two independent research teams at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research near Geneva, were highly anticipated by scientists. Italian physicist Fabiola Gianotti said that with enough data, Higgs could be discovered or ruled out next year. “The window for the Higgs mass gets smaller and smaller,” said Rolf Heuer, CERN’s director-general. “But be careful — it’s intriguing hints. We have not found it yet.” JOHN HEILPRIN (AP)

9el[h Ijeho spokesman for the Governors Highway Safety Association. “States aren’t ready to support a total ban yet, but this may start the discussion. Though he’s stopped short of calling on states to ban cell phone use, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has used the bully pulpit in a national crusade against distracted driving. He has pushed for bans on text messaging and urges people to put their cell phones in the glove compartment while driving. Nine states and the District require drivers to use hands-free devices, although several recent authoritative studies have concluded that use of hands-free equipment does not make drivers any less distracted than they might be if the phone were pressed to their ear.
J_c[b_d[ In calling for a ban on the use of electronic devices while driving, the NTSB cited a series of fatal accidents in which they were deemed distractions.
Drivers’ Phone Use Faces Ban NTSB calls for states to address distracted driving by prohibiting cells behind the wheel MWi^_d]jed The National Transportation Safety Board recommended Tuesday that all states and the District ban cell phone use behind the wheel, becoming the first federal agency to call for an outright ban on telephone conversations while driving. Distracted driving, some of it due to cell phone use, contributed to an estimated 3,092 deaths in highway crashes last year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. “It is time for all of us to stand up for safety by turning off electronic devices when driving, said NTSB Chairman Deborah A.P. Hersman said on Tuesday. The independent NTSB has neither the legislative muscle of Congress nor the regulatory power of the White House, but as the nation’s leading federal safety advocate,
)+ The portion of Americans who admit having read or sent a text message while driving in the past month, according to a recent survey by the American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety. Sixty-seven percent said they talked on a cell phone while driving in the past month, and almost a third said they do it regularly. (T WP)
its recommendations carry weight in both places. Its recommendations also provide political cover if Congress or the administration wants to take on the powerful cell phone industry lobby and an American public addicted to cell phones and other forms of electronic communication. It would be up to state legislatures, which already have banned text messaging while driving in 35 states and the District, to decide whether cell phone use should be illegal. But in the past, Congress has not been shy about leveraging its control of the federal purse strings to bring states in line on issues such as seat belt use and the legal drinking age. “The NTSB recommendation may be a game-changer, said Jonathan Adkins,

However, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported earlier this year that pilot projects in Syracuse, N.Y., and Hartford, Conn., produced significant reductions in distracted driving by combining stepped-up ticketing with high-profile public education campaigns. Before and after each enforcement wave, NHTSA researchers observed cell phone use by drivers and conducted surveys at drivers' license offices in the two cities. They found that in Syracuse, handheld cell phone use and texting declined by a third. In Hartford, there was a 57 percent drop in hand-held phone use, and texting behind the wheel dropped by nearly three-quarters. However, that was with blanket enforcement by police — which, in general, has been lacking in the states that already ban the devices. (THE WASHINGTON POST/AP)
9Wi[ IjkZo The impetus for the NTSB’s recommendation of state bans on cell phone use was a deadly highway pileup near Gray Summit, Mo., last year in which a 19-year-old pickup driver sent and received a flurry of texts just before the accident. The board said the initial collision in the accident was caused by the pickup driver, who was texting. The pickup, traveling at 55 mph, hit a tractor truck that had slowed for construction. The pickup was rear-ended by a school bus that overrode the smaller vehicle. A second school bus rammed into the first bus. The pickup driver and a 15-year-old student on one of the buses were killed. Thirty-eight people were injured. (AP)

Commission OKs Taxi Fare Hike Proposal would also introduce credit card pay option by fall ’12
The D.C. Taxicab Commission approved a proposal Tuesday to increase cab fares in the District and to introduce a credit-card payment option by the fall of 2012. Under the proposed changes, the “drop rate” — the base fare that riders pay at the beginning of a cab ride — would remain $3, but the per-mile rate would jump from $1.50 to $2.16. Additionally, the wait-time rate would increase from $15 to $25 per hour. Several additional fees — for luggage, additional passengers, pets, emergency fuel surcharge and personal service — would be eliminated. These changes, which Chairman Ron Linton described as “reasonable,” were outlined in a 20-page report issued by the commission.

Earl Hubbard drives his taxi in 2008. The D.C. Taxicab Commission’s proposed fare hike would add an average $1.28 per trip for riders traveling 2.5 miles or less.
8WYaijeho A fare increase has been a long-standing wish of the taxi industry, dating to then-Mayor Adrian Fenty’s imposition of meters in 2008, leading to what some drivers claimed was a 30 percent drop in income over the old zone system. Fenty, largely ignored concerns about low fares, which led the taxi industry to back Gray in the 2010 mayoral elections. (T WP)
By approving the proposal, the commission effectively opened up a 30-day written comment period that will begin Dec. 23, when the proposal will be published. Linton said the commission will devote the entire public comment portion of its Jan. 11 meeting to the proposal. Although the commission will not vote again, feedback from the public could lead to further changes, Linton said. “I am happy that no one has assaulted me,” Linton said in a phone interview Tuesday afternoon, acknowledging the controversial nature of the proposed increase. While it may be more than many riders want to pay, it’s 59 cents less than cabdrivers had requested. T he proposed increase to $2.16 per mile amounts to an average additional cost of $1.28 per trip for riders traveling 2.5 miles or less. Trips from 2.5 miles to 5 miles would see an increase of $1.84. MAGGIE FAZELI FARD (THE WASHINGTON POST )

In early November, the Chevy Chase Land Co., which owns much of the Chevy Chase Lake area, opened a shuttle service to the public that it had previously limited to its retail and office tenants. About 75 people now take the shuttle bus
daily, about 30 of them from the community, said Lisa Fadden, a spokeswoman for the land company. The new public service was first reported on the Robert Dyer @ Bethesda Row blog. The shuttle operates between the Metro station and an office building at 8401 Connecticut Ave., just south of Manor Road, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Pickups at each location are about every 40 minutes. Fadden said the company has provided the shuttle to its retail and office tenants for four to five years and opened it to the community on a trial basis over the holidays, largely to help more peo-

service, which is free to all riders. Fadden said the expanded service had no connection with the land company’s trying to build community support for its development plans for the area, which drew opposition because of the density and height of buildings proposed and the development’s potential impacts on traffic. The area is slated for a station on the 16-mile light rail Purple Line proposed between Bethesda and New Carrollton. The land company has advocated for the $1.93 billion project, which has no designated construction funding. K ATHERINE SHAVER (THE WASHINGTON POST )

The official numbers are in, and just like last year, Amtrak set a company record over the Thanksgiving week. The company reported Tuesday that 724,051 passengers rode an Amtrak train over the full holiday week. The total breaks the company’s own Thanksgiving week record of 704,446 passengers, which was set last year. MARK BERMAN (T WP)

East No Longer a Beast The Cowboys and Giants vie for first in a division that’s seen better days
:edÊj 9ekdj J^[c Ekj Every time the Philadelphia Eagles have won a game during this lost season, they’ve considered it a starting point. They’ve run out of time to turn things around, but they’re still clinging to playoff hopes. Even at 5-8, the defending NFC East champions have a chance to repeat. They must win their last three games, and the Giants and Cowboys each have to finish no better than 1-2. Given the mediocre state of the NFC East, the Eagles are certainly kicking themselves for all those blown opportunities earlier in the season. They lost five games in which they led in the fourth quarter, including four at home. (AP)
Fhe <eejXWbb The New York Giants, who take a 7-6 record into Sunday’s game against the Redskins, have won once since Nov. 6. In the glory days of the NFC East, that would have made them an afterthought entering the NFL season stretch run. This season, it makes them a division leader. The NFC East once was the division of Super Bowl powerhouses. In a 14-year stretch between the 1982 and 1995 seasons, teams in the division won eight Super Bowl titles — three each by the Redskins and Dallas Cowboys, and two by the Giants. NFC East clubs had four-straight Super Bowl triumphs between the 1990 The number of and 1993 seasons. victories that But such dominance is a rapNFC East teams idly fading memory. (T WP) regular season. With the Giants and Cowboys scheduled to play each other again, the NFC East is not in jeopardy of sinking to the level of last season’s NFC West, in which the Seattle Seahawks won the division at 7-9 and became the sport’s first-ever playoff team with a losing record. But it is at a point at which the Philadelphia Eagles, even with a disappointing 5-8 record, still are in contention. Even so, Charley Casserly, the former general manager of the Redskins and Houston Texans, said on Tuesday that’s he’s not yet ready to declare this season a low point for the NFC East. “They’re both explosive offensively,” Casserly said. “The Giants came within one possession of beating Green Bay. I think Dallas could do the same thing. Whatever team gets in [the playoffs] will have a chance to beat someone. One of those teams could still be 10-6. No one would say anything about that. Let’s let the last three games play out and see how it goes.”
()
The Cowboys have essentially turned into the anti-Tebows. Just like the Denver quarterback has a knack for turning seemingly lost games into victories in the final minutes, Dallas turns likely victories into losses right at the end. Dallas has led in the fourth quarter of five of its six losses this season and in eight of its nine losses under coach Jason Garrett. This isn’t the first time in recent memory that Dallas has struggled down the stretch. QB Tony Romo is 19-2 in November but is just 9-14 in regular season games in December and January. That includes 4-0 this November and 0-2 this December. (AP)

For all of their struggles, the Giants can at least rest their hopes on Eli Manning, who threw for 400 yards against the Cowboys on Sunday and is having a superb season that has been largely overshadowed by the more celebrated exploits of fellow quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers of the Packers, Drew Brees of New Orleans and Tom Brady of New England. Each of the four now is on pace to surpass 5,000 passing yards this season. There have been only two 5,000-yard passing seasons in NFL history, by Dan Marino for Miami in 1984 and by Brees for the Saints in 2008. (TWP)

Long Road From Midwest to UMd. FIU contest reflects contrast in careers of Thomas, Turgeon Three decades ago, Isiah Thomas and Mark Turgeon were just a couple of schoolboy point guards from the Midwest with wide eyes, big dreams and a basketball tucked under one arm. The paths that led them to Wednesday’s Florida International-Maryland game in College Park, where they’ll be coaching against one another, could not have been more different. Thomas supplemented heaps of natural ability with grit and competitiveness. He starred at Indiana before he was drafted by the Detroit Pistons in 1981 and set out on a career that included two NBA titles and recognition as one of the NBA’s 50 greatest players. Coaching, for Thomas, is a second career, or perhaps third or fourth or fifth. Since his playing days, he has been an NBA execu-

tive, owner of the short-lived Continental Basketball Association and a television commentator. Thomas’ resume also includes interests in a printing business, a popcorn business and multiple restaurants. His first coaching job was as head coach of the Indiana Pacers, and after three years there he moved on to become president of basketball operations for the New York Knicks and, later, the team’s head coach.

After two seasons and a combined 18-44 record, Isiah Thomas is still fighting to forge an identity for Florida International. In late November, he said, “The perseverance and fight in this team is impressive.” Less than a week later, after a loss to Alabama State, he lamented, “We just can’t seem to adhere to a game plan. That goes from Player one to 12. Every time we put a player in, they turn the ball over.” D.T.
NFL Bans Steelers LB Harrison 1 Game for Hit
When things went south in New York, he signed on as head coach at Florida International (3-6), taking on a rebuilding project with a program that had five-straight losing seasons. To show he was serious, he donated his first year’s salary back to the university. Turgeon himself might have dreamed of a career like Thomas’, but those dreams didn’t last long beyond his freshman season at Kansas in 1984, during which coach Larry Brown told Turgeon that he wasn’t talented enough to play in the NBA. But Turgeon was smart, and Brown hired him as a graduate assistant after his four years of eligibility were up.
Turgeon was an assistant at Kansas, at Oregon and with the Philadelphia 76ers. He became a head coach at Jacksonville State, Wichita State and Texas A&M before arriving at Maryland (5-3) this spring and tackling his own rebuilding project. The lessons that he’s stressing to his first Maryland squad, short on talent after Gary Williams retired, are those that he learned at the side of coaches such as Brown and Roy Williams. “Winning comes up more than I want it to, especially among the players and assistant coaches,” he said. “My whole thing is if we do what we’re supposed to do, the rest takes care of itself.” DEREK TURNER

It was hard to watch this past Thursday’s Christmas episode of “Community” without thinking about the NBC sitcom’s hiatus. So on second viewing, I tried to see “Regional Holiday Music” through the eyes of someone who couldn’t tell “Community” from “Cougar Town.” The setup is simple: A group of community college friends are asked to fill in for the Glee Club to put on the school’s winter pageant. As the sweater 8o HkZ_ vest-obsessed director =h[[dX[h] tries to recruit them, the episode turns the singing, dancing and camera-spinning of “Glee” into a horror story, with each member of the group slowly seduced by song. The jokes come fast and broad (the recurring confusion over what, exactly, Regionals are), and the songs are smart and silly (the “Jehovah’s Most Secret Witness” rap). I didn’t love it just because I love “Community” and hate “Glee.” I loved it because it was genuinely funny. (See for yourself on Hulu.) The episode ends with the gang gathered around the TV, caroling “we’ll see you after Regionals” to the tune of “The First Noel.” It’s a reminder that, while “Community’s” future is uncertain, every episode is a gift. Would you say you enjoy a similar intellectual relationship as Freud and Jung have? CRONENBERG: We are readers, and we do get excited when we say, “Oh, I read that same book!” and things like that. Childmodels increasingly popularinChina
Fashion designers cast their eyes toward the big market for little children that has mostly remained beneath the gaze of domestic labels, Chen Nan reports. ZOU HONG / CHINA DAILY
Zhou Gengfei designs for children and opens a store for her label.
WHERE STYLE COMES UP SHORT When Zhou Gengfei quit her job as a Beijing-based fashion magazine editor to create her own designs in 2008, she found big inspiration in her little niece. Her sister, she says, regularly dressed the 3-year-old girl, “like a doll”. “Don’t underestimate a 3-year-old,” Zhou says. “She has her own ideas about what she wants to wear.” Zhou realized few Chinese designers have considered the little people — and that she should. So Zhou used her niece as a guinea pig for her experimentation with creative clothing. “She once told me she feels like a star because her friends don’t have clothes like hers,” Zhou says. Zhou recently showed her children’s fashion line Geng at an event featuring 150 designers at the Brand New China store in Beijing’s trendy Sanlitun Village. Ten of her outfits were shown off by 2-year-old twin models Wang Jun’er and Wang Ruiqi.
The two tots were treating the catwalk’s back stage like a playground during the show. The girl was pretending to fly in her hooded red cape, while the boy was playing with the spines of the dinosaur outfit he was going to wear after the blue and white polka dot jacket he had on. Their mother was called in to lure them onto the runway with candy, as electronic music played and the audience watched. “Parents love the brand for its sense of humor and its sophisticated, cool and classic look,” Zhou says. “Kids love the brand because it’s fun and makes them feel like cool grownups!” Zhou opened a store for her label in Wangjing, selling clothes for ages 1 to 7. “Many parents, especially young ones, regard fashion as part of their lifestyles and want to reflect that through their children,” the 33-year-old says. “I’ve heard many mothers complain children’s clothes can
only be worn for a year, which is such a waste. My clothes grow up with the children.” She designs around the certainty the children will get taller in mind — A-shaped skirts and trousers with adjustable waists are commonplace among her creations. Cotton is her fabric of choice, because she believes it’s comfortable and practical for children. Her designs seek a subtle aesthetic that shies away from glaring colors and cartoon figures. “Most major luxury and boutique brands’ children’s wear lines mimic the trends that identify their adult lines,” Zhou says. “But children have individual styles.” Parents are catching on to this, Zhou believes, and are putting more thought into how they dress their children. And designers are catching on to the parents’ideas. Tong is a children’s wear label startedfiveyearsagoby35-year-
old mother of two Yu Jinjin. The Shanghai native recalls envisioning how her children would look in clothes when shopping while pregnant and being disappointed at how they actually looked. “Kids’ clothes are too brightly colored and covered with too many decorations like lace and cartoons,” Yu says. “Children are cute enough without embellishments that overshadow their personalities. I like black, gray and white, but those colors are rarely used in children’s wear. So I use those elements in my kids’clothes.” She also believes children, especially young ones, have no need for gender differentiation in their clothing. Yu says she has only followed her own fashion sense since she was a teenager and has never read style magazines for inspiration. “When I returned to Shanghai (from living abroad),my hair was dyed red and green,” she recalls. “I was so different. And I want my children to be unique, too.”

Twins Wang Ruiqi and Wang Jun’er (right), 2, appear at a fashion show for children.
Yu says her clothing has attracted much attention from customers of the restaurant she owns. “The designs and color schemes impressed them because they have never seen such children’s clothes before,” she says. Simplicity, comfort and individuality are the hallmarks of the clothes she makes for children ages 2 to 7, she says. Yu joined the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA) fashion store in 2010 and plans to open a branch in Beijing in 2012. Yu and Zhou seem well positioned for what is set to become a booming industry.
China is home to more than 400 million children younger than 16 — 80 percent of whom are younger than 10, China National Garment Association figures show. The market is expected to grow by 10 percent a year. While more companies are entering the industry, most are adult labels crossing over into children’s wear rather than designers specializing in creating with just young ones in mind. “Luxury labels’ expansion into children’s wear presents opportunities and challenges for Chinese designers,” UCCA fashion store art director Jing Peng says.
The international fashion industry has been mired in controversy recently over the 10-year-old French model Thylane Blondeau who dresses in adult-looking outfits and strikes sexy poses. But Wang Xuexing, a Beijing girl two years younger than Blondeau, is still working on her poses at model training sessions every Sunday, in addition to her weekend piano and swimming classes. Together with 20 other children aged between 4 and 16, she learns how to put on simple cosmetics, appreciate the beauty of fashion, and most importantly, walk the catwalk. She is also required to learn some ballet steps. The one-year course, providedbyoneofthecountry’s
biggest model agencies, New Silk Road, costs Wang’s parents 2,180 yuan ($342). A friend of theirs recommended the agency, saying their daughter was pretty and could be a supermodel in the future. Neither Wang nor her mother know anything about Blondeau and her controversial fashion photos. Even so, Wang adores cover girls and wishes to be one herself some day. Wang’s mother, on the other hand, does not expect her to become a supermodel but hopes the course will teach her to become more confident, sociable and communicative. “I was very shy, but after I went on the course I started to become more confident,” she says, putting one of her hands on her waist and striking a professional pose.

Sun Jianqin, director of the Children Training Department at New Silk Road, says about 1,000 students are currently enrolled on the course. “Most parents send their children on the course, expecting them to become more confident and communicative, but there are also some who expect their children to become professional models in the future,” Sun says. Child models are in great demand. There are around 50 kids fashion labels in the country. At China Fashion Week, more than 10 fashion shows for kids are held, with models ranging from 4 to 16. Some adult fashion labels’ shows also require child models, says Hu Nan, an officer with the China Fashion Association. The National Children

Model Competition has been held annually for seven years. In 2011, 53 kids modeling competitions were held, and they attracted agencies from France and the United States. There is some public criticism, however, saying children should not be exposed to fashion and its adult messages. New Silk Road’s Sun responds that the main idea of the course is to help kids gain confidence, rather than become professional models. “Children are still growing. Positive characters are very important for them. The course provides them a platform to shine, and this is what matters,” Sun says. The nation’s A-list fashion magazines, such as Vogue China, Harper’s Bazaar China and Elle China, do not use under 16 models.

“Our Barnes & Noble is probably like most Barnes & Nobles. The instant you walk through the front doors, you’re confronted with two paths: books on the left, Nooks on the right. It’s a little like good vs. evil for me, a former bookstore clerk and newspaper reporter. I have a soft spot in my heart for dying industries, I suppose.” — FEASTAFTERFAMINE.COM had some trouble deciding which option to take while doing Christmas shopping this week.

“H&M is taking fashion [chicanery] to the next level this week by using computergenerated models in its holiday lingerie campaign. As if the Photoshopping, airbrushing, pushing up, and sucking in that goes on in a typical yuletide bra commercial wasn’t enough to make the average shopper want to throw on a Snuggie and call it a day, now the models selling us our delicates are actually virtual.” — BITCHMAGAZINE.ORG is not impressed with the clothing store’s use of CGI bodies as models in its online merchandise photos.
“This is a movie about ninjas, guns, ninjas posing, Cobra taking over the White House, ninjas climbing mountains, the Rock sweating and grimacing, Bruce Willis glowering and perspiring, and all modern warfare basically being boiled down to ninjas.”
“He’s El Capitan. Not only of the New York Yankees, but of this massive urban jungle full of beautiful lady creatures. A memo to the womenfolk of N.Y.C. (and its surrounding areas): one day, you might be lucky enough to get The Conqueror’s Gift Basket.”
— SPORTSGRID.COM reacts to a New York Post story about Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, alleging that he treats women to a limo home and a gift basket of signed memorabilia — IO9.COM thinks the trailafter dates. er for “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” portends a vast improvement on the previous installment in the series.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) The way out of a self-made mess is right in front of you; all you have to do is recognize it for what it is: your escape hatch. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You may have to get used to doing certain things on your own that you shared — or had others do for you — in the past. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Seek a method that others can agree with. Trying to do something in a way that rubs others the wrong way is only going to backfire on you. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You’re seeing things very differently, but you may not know exactly why — or recognize that you are doing so in the first place. ARIES (March 21-April 19) Domestic activities can bring you a great deal of pleasure — and a great deal of peace of mind, too. Don’t stray too far at this time.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Yes, it’s that time again — and you know it. Try to avoid excuses of any kind and simply make a start — and the bigger, the better. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Seek a way out of your current tangle as quickly as possible. Be aware that you may not extricate yourself immediately, however. CANCER (June 21-June 20) In order to get done the things you have to get done, you may have to mix and mingle with those with whom you have little in common.
<EKH H79A JEJ7B Make a 2-7 letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. 7-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You’ll be playing the waiting game throughout much of the day — but you can use the time to your advantage if you think outside the box. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Someone you have to work with may be making it difficult — not because you don’t like him or her, but because you do.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You can avoid disaster merely by facing the problems that arise with honesty and insight. Accept that you are, in part, to blame. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You may have to burn the candle at both ends — but the end result is likely to be worth it. A loved one expresses certain concerns.

Jane Fonda reminisced about her life on Rosie O’Donnell’s talk show Wednesday, revealing, among other things, that Michael Jackson listened to motivational tapes. “He lived with me for 10 days when I was making ‘On Golden Pond,’” she said. “I could see a cord under his pillow and it was a tape that he would listen to and it would say, ‘You’re a good person; it’s going to be OK.’” (EXPRESS)

Richard Hatch has been released from a state prison after serving a nine-month sentence for failing to pay back taxes. Hatch, the winner of the first season of the CBS reality show “Survivor,” was released Monday. Hatch, 50, served six weeks at a state minimum-security facility as a transition after spending most of his sentence in federal prison. Hatch has maintained that he’s not guilty. (AP)

In the suit, Constance asked for support from Leighton, claiming she “sacrificed her happiness” to further Leighton’s career.
