‘It’s not easy’: Clinton reassures local girl

Martha Kennedy Morales received a letter from Hillary Clinton after she lost an election at school.

fourth-grade class. Martha said that as part of a unit on U.S. government, the class had elections for class president and Congress, and she decided to run for the top job. Her opponent, she said, was a popular fourth-grade boy. The election was held, but six

ballots were declared invalid because students had not filled them out correctly. Another vote was taken. Martha lost by a single vote and was declared vice president. In a description of her job that U.S. vice presidents could have given, she said: “Now I get to be the tiebreaker if the House and Senate can’t agree. And I have meetings with the president. That’s all that I know that I do.” Her father, Albert Morales, said Martha waged a serious campaign to win, and he routinely posted campaign updates on his Facebook page. Someone who knows Clinton saw the posts and mentioned it to her, and she decided to write to the youngster. “The most important thing is that you fought for what you believed in,” Clinton wrote. Martha said her mom gave her the letter when she picked her up from school. “I opened it up, and it was a letter from Hillary Clinton. I was very surprised,” she said. Martha is now working on a thank-you note. VALERIE STRAUSS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

It was from Hillary Clinton, who was consoling Martha for losing an election for class president to a boy — by a single vote. “As I know too well, it’s not easy when you stand up and put yourself in contention for a role that’s only been sought by boys,” Clinton wrote. Clinton, who lost to Donald Trump in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, was the first woman to be nominated as a presidential candidate by any major political party in U.S. history. Clinton won the popular vote but lost in the electoral college. Jesuits list ‘credibly accused’

PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY

Officers suspended after gun fired at holiday party Eleven police officers in Prince George’s County have been suspended after a gun was fired at a holiday party over the weekend and two officers were injured. Several off-duty officers were at a private home Saturday evening when a privately owned handgun was discharged, according to Prince George’s County police. The officers were taken to hospitals, treated and released early Sunday, police said. Investigators responded to the scene that night and are reviewing the circumstances behind the shooting. (TWP)

Regional Catholic order names priests tied to sex abuse allegations

REGION The Maryland Province Jesuits, a Catholic religious order with priests serving throughout the Washington area and across eight states, released a list Monday of priests in the order who have been “credibly accused” of abusing children since the 1950s. The admission by the Jesuit order, which is widely known for educating youths in its high schools and colleges, comes at a time when Catholic institutions are under tremendous pressure to respond more transparently to claims of sexual abuse by priests. Religious orders — including the Jesuits, the Catholic church’s largest male order, with almost 17,000 priests and brothers — have been particularly criticized by victims’ advocates for their opacity. Of about 48,500 priests nationwide, about 31 percent are from religious orders, and the other 69 percent are from dioceses, according to the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate at Georgetown University. In October, the major umbrella organization for male orders urged the groups to publish names of their accused members, and on Monday, the Maryland Province Jesuits did just that, naming five living Jesuits, three who left the order after being accused of misconduct, and five who have died. It was unclear whether all of the priests named on the list were ever reported by the Jesuits to law

enforcement. Mike Gabriele, a spokesman for the province, said the province only automatically reports an accusation to authorities if the victim is still a minor when he or she reports the abuse. If the victim is already an adult, Gabriele said, the province’s response varies by state. The Maryland province covers Pennsylvania to Georgia. The men accused of abusing minors worked for decades in high schools, including Gonzaga College High School in D.C.; at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital; at churches in D.C. and Baltimore; and other institutions. Five Jesuits identified in the Maryland Province’s report at one time were associated with Georgetown Preparatory School in Montgomery County. Gary Orr,

in the 1990s: Michael L. Barber pleaded guilty in 1994 to a sexual offense that the order believes occurred that year, and was removed from ministry the same year. Another priest, William J. Walsh, was accused of abusing children in the District, in Prince George’s County and in Pennsylvania, from the 1950s to the 1980s, and was removed from ministry in 1996. In the wake of a Pennsylvania grand jury report in August that named more than 300 accused priests in the state and brought renewed attention to abuse by Catholic clergy, dioceses and some religious orders such as the Jesuits have published lists in recent months of credibly accused priests. The VirginianPilot in Norfolk reported last week that the measure would roll back federal protections for certain waterways and wetlands. It’s disturbing, it’s disgusting, but is it illegal? METRO Stephanie Cumings was riding an Orange Line train in the middle of the afternoon in May near Falls Church, when a man sitting across from her stuck his hand in his pants and started masturbating. The fact that his hand was in his pants would prove to be important legally. But at that moment, Cumings was focused on his face. “The guy was pretty scary,” she said in an email. “He was giving me this real menacing look.” As disturbing as that experience was, Metro’s response was just as unsettling. Cumings complained via an online form used by Metro as part of its campaign to encourage riders to report sexual harassment. A Metro transit police sergeant wrote back that it wasn’t clear that what she saw “rises to the level of a criminal act.” “What you described is indeed a criminal act in D.C. Not in Virginia and it can be murky in Maryland,” he added, saying he’d consulted with detectives. “It was very bizarre to be told public masturbating isn’t a crime,” Cumings said. It’s understandable that there could be confusion, as crazy as it seems. Although attorneys agree the incident clearly would have been a crime if the train were in the District, the law is at best “murky” in Maryland. Montgomery County prosecutors acknowledge that masturbating

on Metro isn’t considered indecent exposure if the train is in Maryland — and if genitals aren’t exposed. That’s because Maryland law doesn’t spell out what’s considered indecent exposure. Defining the crime has been left up to the courts, said Randolph Rice, a Baltimore defense attorney who has represented some defendants in indecent exposure cases. He said Maryland juries are generally instructed that three things have to be in play for someone to commit indecent exposure: First, the act has to occur in a public place, such as Metro. Second, the person committing the act must intend for someone to see it. Finally, private parts must be displayed. Because the man on the Orange Line didn’t expose himself, Rice said, his actions weren’t criminal in Maryland. “Is this offensive to society? Yes,” he said. “Is it a crime? No.” It is possible the man could have been prosecuted for disorderly conduct, said Seth Zucker, spokesman for the office of the state’s attorney in Montgomery County. But Rice, a former Baltimore County assistant state’s attorney, called that “a stretch,” saying he’s never seen the charge used to prosecute public masturbation. “This is something that should be changed,” said Lisae Jordan, executive director and counsel for the Maryland Coalition

Against Sexual Assault. Upon reviewing the laws at DC Rider’s request, she agreed that what Cumings saw wouldn’t violate Maryland decency laws. “Public masturbation is intimidating, inappropriate, and should be a crime,” she said. Asked for comment on the sergeant’s response to Cumings, Metro media relations manager Sherri Ly said, “We are unable to comment on legal interpretation,” noting that officers who have to enforce sometimes conflicting laws in the areas through

which trains run attend multiple police academies and are trained on the differences in laws between jurisdictions. “Transit Police enforce the laws of each jurisdiction as they are written,” she said. “There are often differences, not just in this area.” But in Virginia, where the incident occurred, attorneys — including Arlington County prosecutors — disagree with the Metro officers on whether what happened to Cumings was a crime. Amelia Nemitz, assistant commonwealth attorney for Arlington County, said Virginia law prohibits masturbating or simulating masturbation “in any public place where others are present, intending that he be seen by others.” Unlike Maryland, Virginia law “does not explicitly require the exposure of the genitalia as an

element of the crime,” Nemitz said. Nemitz said the man’s masturbation could also be a violation of Virginia law prohibiting the “obscene display or exposure of his person.” In an earlier ruling, the Virginia Court of Appeals ruled that genitals do not have to be displayed for someone to be convicted of indecent exposure. The law is clearer in the District. It says specifically that it is unlawful for a person “to engage in masturbation” in public. “There is no requirement of visible genitalia,” said Robert Marus, a spokesman for D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine. The Metro police sergeant invited Cumings to file a report, saying “no one should be subjected to that type of behavior on their commute.” But after being told it wasn’t a crime, Cumings never followed up. U.S.: Strikes in Somalia kill 62, foil terror attack SOMALIA Six U.S. airstrikes that killed more than 60 extremists in a coastal Somali town were preemptive strikes to prevent a major extremist attack, according to a Somali intelligence officer. The U.S. military said Monday it carried out four strikes Saturday in which 34 people were killed and two more on Sunday that killed 28. The air attacks targeted Gandarshe, south of the capital, Mogadishu, it said. No civilians were injured or killed in the attacks, it said. The strikes were carried out

in close coordination with Somalia’s government and were “conducted to prevent al-Shabab from using remote areas as a safe haven to plot, direct, inspire, and recruit for future attacks,” said the U.S. military statement. The U.S. airstrikes were aimed at al-Shabab fighters who were preparing a major attack on a Somali government military base in the Lower Shabelle region, said a Somali intelligence official. “The strike has neutralized an imminent attack,” the official said, adding that they hit both a military camp and battle vehicles

in Gandarshe. Al-Shabab has long used Gandarshe as a launching pad for attacks, including car bombs that hit the capital. With these attacks, the U.S. military has carried out at least 46 airstrikes this year against al-Shabab, which is allied to alQaeda and Africa’s most active Islamic extremist group. Al-Shabab, which is fighting to establish its version of Shariah law in Somalia, controls parts of rural Somalia and continues to stage deadly attacks in cities.

Hospital fire in India kills at least 6, injures 129

MUMBAI, INDIA | A victim is rushed out on a stretcher Monday after a fire broke out at the five-story, government-run ESIC Kamgar Hospital in the suburban Andheri area. At least six people died and 129 others were injured. Police said the fire was believed to have been caused by an electrical short-circuit.

Another marker has been felled in the debate over whether historical figures with racist histories should be honored. The University of Ghana in Accra no longer has a statue of Indian independence leader Mohandas K. Gandhi. When it was dedicated in 2016, critics petitioned to remove it, calling it an homage to a racist who thought of Africans as naked savages beneath both Britons and Indians. They cited Gandhi’s early writings from his two decades in Africa to bolster their argument. BBC News reported the statue was removed Wednesday. (TWP)

Oxford Dic Dictionaries chose “toxic” as their word of the year, while dictionary.com picked “misinformation.” (AP) U.S. envoy dismisses Russia’s warnings of Ukrainian offensive near Crimea

FOREIGN POLICY The Taliban held another round of talks with U.S. officials Monday, this time in the United Arab Emirates and also involving Saudi, Pakistani and Emirati representatives, part of the latest attempt to bring a negotiated end to Afghanistan’s 17-year war. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid offered few details of the daylong meeting except to say “discussions were held with the American side over the end to the invasion of Afghanistan.” He dismissed Afghan media reports that Afghan government representatives, who are in the United Arab Emirates, had met with the Taliban. Mujahid said the meetings were continuing. While Afghan officials did not attend Monday’s meeting, their presence in the UAE is a significant step in efforts to get the two sides talking. The Taliban have consistently refused to hold direct talks with the Afghan government. Also significant is the presence of the Saudis and Emiratis, both of whom have significant influence over the Taliban, and who might be able to help secure concessions from the group, eventually leading to face-to-face talks with Kabul. While the U.S. State Department has neither denied nor confirmed previous meetings with the Taliban, Washington’s peace envoy, Zalmay Khalilzad, says he has met with all sides in the conflict. Comey blasts GOP ‘acolytes’ POLITICS Former FBI Director James Comey accused President Trump on Monday of trying “to burn down the entire FBI” and charged that congressional Republicans were willing accomplices for failing to challenge him. “The FBI’s reputation has taken a big hit because the president with his acolytes has lied about it constantly,” Comey told reporters after his second closeddoor interview this month with House lawmakers running a politically divisive investigation into how federal law enforcement officials handled probes of the Trump campaign’s alleged Russia ties and Hillary Clinton’s emails. But Comey directed his vitriol at all Republicans — including retiring GOP lawmakers, such as Sens. Bob Corker of Tennessee and Jeff Flake of Arizona, who have openly criticized Trump but aren’t seeking re-election. “At some point, someone has to stand up and face the fear of Fox News, fear of their base, fear of mean tweets, stand up for the values of this country and not slink away into retirement but

Comey also blamed the “silence from people in this building” — meaning Capitol Hill — for allowing the president to do it. “Republicans used to understand that the actions of a president matter, the words of a president matter, the rule of law matters and the truth matters,” he said. “Where are those Republicans today?” Republicans emerged from both sessions frustrated by Comey’s inability or refusal to answer certain questions. “Consistently, the FBI has had legal counsel there to try to discourage the answering of certain questions that might be good for the American people to know,” Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., said outside the meeting room. Meadows also said there were inconsistencies between Comey’s testimony behind closed doors and his previous public statements. Democrats emerging from the session disputed this assessment, while Comey called his answers “boringly consistent.” A transcript of the first session suggested that Comey’s first closed-door testimony mirrored much of what he has said publicly. The joint panel is expected to interview Lynch on Wednesday. KAROUN DEMIRJIAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Malaysia files charges, seeks Goldman Sachs fine

Alexander, 78, won’t seek Senate re-election in 2020

CBS announced Monday that former chairman and CEO Les Moonves, 69, was fired for cause, and will not receive severance in the wake of sexual misconduct allegations. An internal investigation found Moonves guilty of “willful and material malfeasance” and failure to comply with the investigation. He was set to receive up to $120 million as part of his severance package.

Malaysia filed criminal charges against Goldman Sachs and two former executives Monday for their role in the alleged multibillion-dollar ransacking of state investment fund 1MDB. Flynn associates charged with illegal lobbying COURTS Two business associates of Michael Flynn, President Trump’s former national security adviser, were charged Monday with illegally lobbying for Turkey as part of a campaign to pressure the U.S. to expel Turkish cleric Fethullah Gulen from the country. Bijan Kian and Ekim Alptekin are accused in an indictment of conspiring to “covertly and unlawfully” influence U.S. public opinion and politicians, all while concealing that the Turkish government was directing their work. The campaign came in late 2016, while Flynn was a top surrogate for Trump’s campaign. The case sheds further light on how Flynn, above, and those around him worked to benefit a foreign country in the months before he became one of the top U.S. national security officials. Gulen, who holds a U.S. green card and lives in Pennsylvania, is a rival of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has accused the cleric of directing a failed coup and who wants the U.S. to extradite him to Turkey. Gulen has denied any involvement in the coup. Kian and Alptekin are charged with conspiracy and acting as unregistered agents of a foreign government. Alptekin is also charged with lying during an interview with the FBI. Flynn is to be sentenced today in a separate case brought by special counsel Robert Mueller. MATTHEW BARAKAT AND CHAD DAY (AP)

Russians used race to divide

Report shows how aggressively agents worked to suppress the black vote in 2016 ELECTION MEDDLING A new report prepared for the Senate Intelligence Committee reveals that the Russians, in their bid to boost President Trump, have been more fixated than previously understood on trying to dampen African-American political engagement. Researchers at Oxford University’s Computational Propaganda Project and Graphika, a network analysis firm, spent seven months analyzing millions of social media posts that major technology firms turned over to congressional investigators. Their goal was to understand the inner workings of the Internet Research Agency, which the U.S. government has charged with criminal offenses for interfering in the 2016 election. It turns out that African-Americans were targeted with more Facebook ads than any other group, including conservatives. Three of the four most-liked Facebook posts put up by the Russian influence effort came from an account called Blacktivist that urged the community to be more cynical about politics. African-Americans were urged to vote for Green Party candidate Jill Stein throughout the month before the 2016 election.

The number of likes generated by the Russian agency’s organic Facebook posts, which were shared about 31 million times.

On Twitter, four of the Russian agency’s five most-retweeted accounts catered exclusively to African-Americans. On Instagram, all five of the most-liked posts created by the Russians were aimed at AfricanAmerican women. They included the hashtags #blackpower, #blackpride, #unapologeticallyblack, #blacklivesmatter, #icantbreathe, #riot and #blackgirlskillingit. The influence operation — run out of St. Petersburg, Russia — was sophisticated and relentless, and became more effective with time. Its goal was to deploy identity politics to tear America apart. “Messaging to African-Americans sought to divert their political energy away from established

political institutions by preying on anger with structural inequalities . . . including police violence, poverty, and disproportionate levels of incarceration,” the report says. “These campaigns pushed a message that the best way to advance the cause of the African-American community was to boycott the election and focus on other issues instead.” The Russian machinations to manipulate conservatives have been well covered, but the scale of the operations’ focused on African-Americans has never been laid out so vividly. And it’s especially notable because Clinton very narrowly lost three key states — Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin — because of

lower-than-expected black turnout in the urban areas of Philadelphia, Detroit and Milwaukee. In addition to targeting major metropolitan areas that had become hot spots in the Black Lives Matter movement, the agency also micro-targeted Ferguson, Mo. — attempting to reignite the flames of racial animus after the violence in the streets had died down. It used Facebook’s Ads Manager tool to target African-Americans who were specifically interested in “Black Nationalism and identity,” as well as “incarceration” and the criminal justice system. The report, which runs roughly 90 pages, is definitive that a central goal of all this was to elect Trump and, subsequently, to buoy him once he took office: “What is clear is that all of the messaging clearly sought to benefit the Republican Party — and specifically Donald Trump,” it concludes. “Trump is mentioned most in campaigns targeting conservatives and right-wing voters, where the messaging encouraged these groups to support his campaign. The main groups that could challenge Trump were then provided messaging that sought to confuse, distract and ultimately discourage members from voting.” JAMES HOHMANN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Reports say Russian trolls are still at work CYBER THREATS Russia’s sweeping political disinformation campaign on U.S. social media didn’t end with Donald Trump’s ascent to the White House. Troll farms are still working to stoke racial and political passions in America, according to reports released Monday by the Senate intelligence committee. The reports were compiled by the cybersecurity firm New Knowledge and by the Computational Propaganda Research Project, a study by researchers at the University of Oxford and Graphika, a social media analysis firm. The New Knowledge report says there are still some live accounts tied to the original Internet Research Agency, which was named in an indictment from special counsel Robert Mueller in February for an expansive social media campaign to influence the 2016 presidential election. Some of the accounts have a presence on smaller platforms, since the major companies have tried to clean up after the Russian activity was discovered. The Senate panel has been investigating Russian interference for almost two years. Intelligence committee Chairman Richard Burr, R-N.C., said in a statement that the data shows how aggressively Russia tried to divide Americans and erode trust in institutions. “Most troublingly, it shows that these activities have not stopped,” Burr said. RICK SNIDER | SPORTS GURU

A crucial finish: 2 games dictate who stays, goes and two late scores proving enough to beat Jacksonville. The final two games are not about losing for better draft position or forcing owner Dan Snyder to clean house by firing president Bruce Allen and coach Jay Gruden. The gang might stick around for 2019 if the club can finish respectably. Translation: no more trailing 40-0 to an awful team. Does Gruden once more show he’s good enough to reach .500 despite massive injuries throughout the roster? Does he still command the locker room, or will players lie down after their adrenaline was spent on Jacksonville? Johnson, 32, knew this was his last chance to stay in the NFL. He’s probably already earned a training camp slot next summer, but a good effort might make him No. 2. Adrian Peterson revived his chances to return with two late runs that fueled Sunday’s victory. The Redskins expect Derrius Guice to start next season, but Peterson would be the perfect mentor and backup. And finishing well

Satoransky, Dekker add hustle as team awaits Ariza’s arrival WIZARDS The Wizards may have hit the proverbial switch in Sunday’s 128-110 win over the Los Angeles Lakers, but coach Scott Brooks couldn’t help but openly pine for more players to go hard. “I know that Tomas [Satoransky] does play hard and Sam

[Dekker] plays hard. And somebody else is going to come in that is going to play hard.” That somebody is Trevor Ariza, who could suit up for the Wizards tonight at Atlanta. Ariza last played for Washington in 2014 and reunited with the franchise Monday after a trade that sent Austin Rivers and Kelly Oubre Jr. to the Phoenix Suns. right knee contusion. In only a week, Dekker has cemented his reputation. He sparked a comeback against the Indiana Pacers that eventually fell flat. And against the Lakers,

Dekker scored a season-high 20 points in less than 22 minutes, mostly by running the court and becoming an easy target for John Wall’s transition passes. “Whenever I have the ball attacking and penetrating, he’s a great cutter,” Wall said. “Whenever you have an opportunity to be aggressive, he’s a guy that’s cutting and trying to do the little things … Those are the type of guys you need on your team.” Then, there’s Satoransky. He attempted only seven shots Sunday but filled the stat sheet with 11 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals. “He just plays hard,” his c oach sa id. would help cement that. Tight end Jeremy Sprinkle caught a TD pass Sunday but needs a couple more good games to assure his place. Cornerback Josh Norman is looking like an overpriced luxury after three seasons. A poor finish might mean an exit. The Redskins need to save money somewhere, especially if quarterback Alex Smith doesn’t return. Maybe it’s a tease or perhaps the final curtain, but this long season still has one actt remaining.

THE WASHINGTON POST

Could the Redskins really make the playoffs behind their fourth quarterback and fifth left guard this season? Anything could happen, but one absolute is: Jobs depend on how the team finishes. The Redskins (7-7) remain alive in the NFC East, behind Dallas (8-6) and tied with Philadelphia (7-7). They are a half-game behind Minnesota (7-6-1) in a multiteam scramble for the NFC’s second wild card. Washington’s task is to beat 8-6 Tennessee on the road Saturday and the Eagles at FedEx Field on Dec. 30. A roller coaster of a season has one more crest and fall left. Reaching the postseason behind QB Josh Johnson seems preposterous. He was playing in a charity basketball game two weeks ago while thinking his NFL career was over without ever being credited with a win in stints with 11 teams. But Johnson lifted the desperate Redskins on Sunday after four straight losses, his enthusiasm

GIFT IDEA G

No need to say goodbye

Don’t deprive yourself of treats during the holidays. Try this approach to food. WELLNESS It’s an annual holiday tradition that kicks off at Thanksgiving and continues through New Year’s: food guilt. Caught between the desire to enjoy holiday favorites and the fear of putting on extra pounds, people bond over the sharing of timeworn tips such as “eat before you go to a party” or “try to fill up on vegetables before you hit the rest of the buffet” — joyless cliches that really don’t work. Then, on Jan. 2, they join a gym. Plunging into overindulgence or retreating into deprivation are not suitable solutions. Try calling a timeout on obsessing over how many carbs or calories are “allowed” or labeling foods as “good” or “bad,” in favor of a more meaningful approach — focusing on how you want to feel at the end of the meal, party or evening. The result? Feeling happier, healthier and more at peace. Here’s how to try it yourself.

Make conscious choices Often, food regret happens because we eat on autopilot, pulled along by momentary impulses and others’ decisions and desires. In these situations, ask yourself a few reflective questions: What are the holidays about to me? What foods do I look forward

to each year? What foods do I always eat that in hindsight I really couldn’t care less about? A habit worth cultivating: Before each meal or gathering, ask yourself how you want to feel when it’s over. Then consider which foods will taste good and make you feel good. Once you have consciously chosen what you want to eat, honor your right to enjoy it guilt-free.

craving as an ocean wave, and watch as it builds, peaks, then dissipates. What doesn’t work is eating around a true craving with foods you deem more acceptable. If what you truly crave is a sugar cookie, trying to satisfy it with cinnamon rice cakes won’t work — plus, you may end up eating more than if you had just let yourself enjoy the cookie.

Know cravings vs. impulses

Manage food pushers

A true craving is a slow burn, whereas a food impulse comes on suddenly, often because you see or smell a tempting food. Another difference: A food impulse is generally “of the moment” and will fade if you let it, while a craving lingers or keeps returning. One technique for dealing with an impulse-type craving is to “surf the urge” rather than try to block it. Imagine your

Are you a people-pleaser? Does this extend to food? If so, you should prepare strategies for enforcing your personal boundaries without stepping on toes. One good tactic is to start with a smile and a compliment: “Wow, that looks delicious!” or, “That’s so nice of you!” Next, deflect: “Too bad I’m not hungry right now,” or, “Wow, I wish I hadn’t just eaten lunch . . . I’m stuffed!”

If you know the pusher won’t be checking up on you, you can say, “I’ll have some in a little while.” If none of that works, “No, thank you” is always a perfectly acceptable response. Although most food pushers mean well, you’re under no obligation to eat food you didn’t plan for, aren’t hungry for or simply don’t want.

Show yourself compassion

The latest trendy kitchen tool is the kitch air fr fryer, which is similar to a countertop simil convection oven. That conv means it circulates hot mea air b both above and below the food, cooking belo and crisping evenly and effic efficiently. An air fryer cook cooks more quickly than a cou countertop convection oven and is better suite suited to baked goods. The devices range in size from about 2 to 6 quarts and in price from quar about $70 to $300. abou The air fryer makes the crispiest vegetables in crisp half tthe time of roasting, turns traditionally turn unhealthful foods into unhe healthful ones (think chicken wings and fries), reheats leftovers more efficiently than an oven and more tastily than a microwave, and perfects snacks such as kale chips and crispy chickpeas. Do you find this time of year ar more stressful than special? With h family dynamics, the holidays ys can bring a lot of heavy emootional baggage, just as comfort rt foods are close at hand. I’m afraid (and) I have to decline Q. It’s been six years since

BEN CLAASSEN III (FOR EXPRESS)

I left my abusive husband. I was treated for PTSD for years after leaving. Our son is graduating from college in May and wants us to attend a party because “most divorced parents can get along for a couple of hours.” I truly have a sense of panic from the idea of seeing my ex. How can I tell my son that I just can’t go?

DR. ANDREA BONIOR | BAGGAGE CHECK

To the husband it may concern … Q. My wife has started to act distant, and is now responding in emails and using my name. Like today, I let her know my first new sales account came through, and her response was, “I am very happy for you, Joe.” It sounded very formal and unlike how she usually responds. This has been going on for a few days now but I’m uneasy to bring it up. Any ideas? What sounds worse: bringing up to your spouse a seemingly silly thing that has been bothering you, or continuing to be bothered by it, without answers, thinking something is going wrong in your marriage? If your response is truly the former, then I worry there’s a dynamic here more concerning than her email syntax. Bring it up. If you’re worried about the

mountain-from-molehill aspect of parsing her exact words in an email, then make your concerns more general — saying that she’s seemed a bit formal and distant in some of them lately, that her tone has felt different. Then remind yourself that the way to build a strong and healthy relationship is to sometimes have conversations about difficult, vulnerable things.

I understand you don’t want him to know the extent of your suffering. But it’s reasonable to let him in a bit if you have to, to protect yourself. Convey to your son that you want to celebrate in the way he deserves, but forcing yourself to be at the party the entire time will actually take away from the celebration. Explain that there are physical and mental details of your situation that you don’t want to get into, but that you have potential logistical solutions. Stand your ground, then brainstorm together. Maybe he could get your ex to agree to half-attendance where you each go at different times, or he might be OK with your skipping it altogether in favor of a special dinner with you. There are many ways to commemorate the occasion without setting you back after years of recovery, which wouldn’t help anyone. Send questions to Dr. Andrea Bonior at baggage@wpost .com. Andrea is a licensed clinical psychologist and hosts a live chat Tuesdays at 1 p.m. at washingtonpost.com. Your questions may be used in the chats.

Rush has denied the allegations. (AP)

Former model Babi Christina Engelhardt told The Hollywood Reporter in a story published Monday that she began an eightyear affair with Woody Allen in 1976, when she was 16 and the director was 41. “I’m not attacking Woody,” she said. “This is not ‘bring down this man.’ I’m talking about my love story. Not as in Lady Gaga, he quickly clarifies, but the movement language created by an Israeli choreographer. “You get into the room, and you can’t stop moving,” Hedges explains. “That’s sort of the rule.” It’s one the actor probably finds easy to follow, given that he has barely taken a break of any sort over the past couple of years. Since his Oscar-nominated breakthrough performance in Kenneth Lonergan’s 2016 film “Manchester by the Sea,” Hedges has made a habit of playing intense, often restrained characters. He did so in a pair of best picture nominees last year — “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and “Lady Bird” — and again in three films this fall: “Mid90s,” “Ben Is Back” and “Boy Erased,” for which he earned a Golden Globe nod. He also is starring in the Broadway production of Lonergan’s play “The Waverly Gallery,” which runs through Jan. 27. “I didn’t think I would ever be here by now,” he says. “I really, really didn’t.” The bulk of these roles have seen him starring alongside

Since appearing opposite Casey Affleck in “Manchester,” Hedges has played the sons of Frances McDormand (“Three Billboards”), Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman (“Boy Erased”) and Julia Roberts (“Ben Is Back”) while becoming one of the most in-demand young actors in the movie business. “At the end of the day, it’s really just about if it ignites something in me, if I connect on an intuitive level,” he says of choosing his roles. “I find that my gut and my body always know whether or not I should be telling this story.”

Hedges wouldn’t mind crying a little less, though. When asked whom he’d like to work with in the future, he gushes, “God, I think a Pixar movie — Brad Bird, I love him so much. Magical and cool.” Paul Thomas Anderson might be at the top of the list, closely followed by director Hiro Murai, who works on the show “Atlanta.” Oh, and Jordan Peele. MEDIUM

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You may not have the best outlook or attitude, but if you’re surrounded by the right people you can make things turn out all right. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Much depends on your ability to see through even the deepest, darkest deception. You can’t afford to be fooled at this time, for any reason. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You must control your emotions and avoid getting upset about something that was never intentional. Work toward a solution. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You may have to rely on someone today whom you don’t trust. In this situation, you’ll find he or she is wholly reliable.

MONDAY’S SOLUTION

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You’ll

likely find an audience today, and what you say can affect those people deeply. There are changes on the way.

MONDAY’S SOLUTION

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You’ll manage most things without any trouble today. One or two tasks may prove to be more difficult or timeconsuming than expected. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Much of your prep time today will be spent trying to figure out how to make the best use of your time, which may be more limited than usual.

FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

TODAY: It’s a lot like Monday but a little colder. Highs probably manage only 40 to 45. Factoring in those winds gusting to 20 mph, and it will feel like the 30s much of the day. Clear skies and wind should go calm tonight. Temperatures drop quickly, and lows settle in the mid-20s in our colder spots to the low 30s downtown.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) The more specific you can be in your assessment of a key situation today, the more likely you will progress at a rapid pace. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You are tempted to take one or two shortcuts today; take care that you don’t overlook a major potential gain that going the long way provides.
