$1M in Attack Ads Hurt Gingrich GOP hopeful’s slide in Iowa highlights newfound troubles

C[Wdm^_b[ $$$

More than $1 million in negative advertising — much of it bankrolled by Mitt Romney’s allies — has eroded Newt Gingrich’s standing in Iowa and thrown the Republican presidential race here wide open two weeks before the first votes. T he former House spea ker’s Iowa slide mirrors his newfound troubles nationally, and it has boosted Romney’s confidence while fueling talk that libertarianleaning Texas Rep. That would bring to roughly $3 million the amount spent by the group against Gingrich. Gingrich’s weakened position follows a barrage of advertising that cast him as a longtime Washington, D.C., power-broker. The ads, primar-

AT&T Drops T-Mobile Bid Company to pay $4B as penalty after $39B merger struck down Bei 7d][b[i AT&T said Monday it has dropped its bid to purchase T-Mobile and will pay $4 billion as a penalty for not completing its deal. The decision puts an end to an audacious and rocky nine-month quest by the nation’s second- and fourth-largest wireless operators to jointly feed America’s insatiable appetite for smartphones, tablets and other wireless devices. But because the $39 billion deal would have landed AT&T a total of more than 120 million customers, federal regulators fought the merger — the first major corporate deal to be struck down during the Obama administration. AT&T and Deutsche Telekom,

?dl[ijc[dji

Beea_d] 7^[WZ AT&T Chief Executive Randall Stephenson said the company would continue to invest in its wireless network. He called on federal regulators to stay out of the way of the free markets and to make more airwaves available: “The mobile Internet is a dynamic industry that can be a critical driver in restoring American economic growth and job creation, but only if companies are allowed to react quickly.” (THE WASHINGTON POST )

the parent company of T-Mobile, said it tried to find other ways to salvage its deal but ultimately agreed to break it off. The penalty for AT&T was a penalty fee valued at $4 billion in cash and airwaves. AT&T, which has poured mil-

lions into its lobbying and legal efforts to win the merger, slammed the government’s findings. The wireless industry “is one of the most fiercely competitive industries in the world,” the company said in a statement. “The AT&T and T-Mobile USA combination would have offered an interim solution to this spectrum shortage. In the absence of such steps, customers will be harmed and needed investment will be stifled.” Considering the loss of the merger and the new agreements recently struck by Verizon Wireless and cable companies, analysts question the future of AT&T and T-Mobile. Deutsche Telekom has signaled its interest in ending its investments in the U.S. and could look for another suitor. But analysts question whether regulators would approve another bid for T-Mobile, given its opposition to the AT&T merger.

Witness: Manning Wrote of Changing History The Army intelligence analyst blamed for the biggest leak of secrets in U.S. history boastfully declared that he was changing history in a letter accompanying some of the data he allegedly sent to WikiLeaks, according to a witness in the military’s case against Army Pfc. Bradley Manning. The text was on a data card investigators found among Manning’s belongings. “This is possibly one of the more significant documents of our time, removing the fog of war and revealing the true nature of 21st century asymmetric warfare. Have a good day,” the file read.

Army Pfc. Bradley Manning is escorted to a courthouse Monday in Fort Meade, Md.

The letter was projected on a courtroom screen and explained by digital-crimes investigator David Shaver during a hearing to deter-

mine whether Manning will be court-martialed. Shaver said almost 500,000 classified battlefield reports also were on the card.

>[WhiWo

The letter represented the most forceful piece of evidence introduced in the hearing at an Army installation outside Washington. In a back-and-forth, the prosecution and defense sparred over whether the 24-year-old native of Crescent, Okla., not only had classified files on his computer but also sent them to WikiLeaks for publication. Until Monday, the defense largely focused on painting Manning as a troubled gay man. Manning’s lawyers have yet to acknowledge or deny his responsibility for the leak of U.S. war and diplomatic cables, and a classified military video of an American helicopter attack in Iraq that killed 11 men. Korea Grief, uncertainty grip country after Kim Jong Il’s death Foed]oWd]" D$ Aeh[W North Koreans marched by the thousands Monday to their capital’s landmarks to mourn Kim Jong Il, many crying uncontrollably and flailing their arms in grief over the death of their “Dear Leader.” North Korean state media proclaimed his youngest son, Kim Jong Un, a “Great Successor,” while a vigilant world watched for any signs of a turbulent transition to the untested leader in an unpredictable nation known to be pursuing nuclear weapons. South Korea’s military went on high alert in the face of the North’s 1.2 million-strong armed forces after news of Kim’s death after 17 years in power. Yearlong operation yields arrests, guns, and more than $7M worth of drugs MWi^_d]jed Christopher Washington found some good customers inside a Northeast D.C. rowhouse, making deals for revolvers, shotguns, ammunition, crack cocaine and heroin. He kept going back, authorities say, pulling in thousands of dollars. Then, in June, he offered up hand grenades and a rocket launcher. His customers were eager to buy. What Washington didn’t know at the time: The house, dressed up as a recording studio, was wired by the FBI, and his clients were undercover D.C. police. When an officer listening in on a telephone conversation overheard plans to rob his customers instead, Washington was soon arrested. Those encounters, described in court papers, were among the many that occurred during a yearlong sting operation that was revealed Monday. Authorities say officers posing as gangsters, crooked businessmen and bodyguards helped snag $7.2 million in cocaine, methamphetamines and other drugs; buy and capture 161 weapons; and make 70 arrests. “This was a significant result for the District,” D.C. Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier said at a Monday afternoon press conference. “Had those drugs and guns made it to our streets, the consequences would be devastating.” The salesman who claimed he could provide rocket launchers was Washington, according to court papers that say he also sold officers drugs. Another man, James Deale, allegedly sold them AR-15 assault rifles — but also made-tofit handgun silencers, which police said are rarely found on the streets. “I never thought guys could get guns as fast as those guys can get guns,” said Officer Kief Green, who posed as

TWP

KdZ[hYel[h B[WZ[h The face of the sting operation was D.C. Police Sgt. Dale Sutherland, a veteran of undercover work. Posing as Manic Enterprises impresario Richie Valdez, head of an international string of recording studios, he could convince criminals that he was one of them — and that he wasn’t afraid to rob banks and drug dealers to boost his trade in guns and drugs. Valdez’s associates were D.C. police narcotics investigators. The team uncovered connections to a Mexican drug cartel and out-of-area gun traders, leading to federal investigations in a half-dozen states and a murder case in El Salvador. The yearlong investigation gave authorities a rare opportunity to fight violent crime by attacking the sources of the dangerous weapons that flow into the city, authorities say. (T WP)

Police declined to discuss many of the operation’s tactical details, but interviews and court documents provided a partial illustration of their methods:

J^[ BW_h Once inside the Northeast house’s iron gate, visitors found gleaming hardwood floors and a flat-screen television in the entryway. Upstairs, a Plexiglas window divided a studio built in a converted bedroom from a sound system, couches, a mini-fridge and a bar.

J^[ Ef[hWj_ed The hidden audio and video equipment recorded hundreds of hours of meetings and deals struck with undercover officers. Confidential informants lured targets to the studio, courting them with food, beer and high-end tequila. Over days, weeks and months, police worked to set up bigger deals in the D.C. area and in New York, North Carolina, Georgia and West Virginia.

J^[ 8h[Wa A November 2010 meeting led to the eventual arrest of eight men authorities said were connected to the Mexican drug cartel “La Familia.” One of them allegedly claimed to run the area’s drug operations for the gang, which wanted to establish a methamphetamine market in the District. a bodyguard for Manic Enterprises impresario Richie Valdez, in an interview. “Amazing.” In October, after six people were shot — one fatally — in five incidents of gunfire on or after Halloween night, Lanier lamented an “uptick” in the number of gunshots reported in the city, calling the shootings “a symptom of the bigger problem.” Around that time, D.C. police and ATF, FBI and ICE agents were working to wrap up the undercover operation, which used the Northeast house and other locations as bases. The operation differed from some other recent undercover projects in the District. In 2009, Lanier and federal investigators revealed a sting run out of a phony auto body shop that helped them seize guns, drugs and stolen electronics. During that investigation, police sought to pull guns and drugs off the streets quickly. “This time it was more of a conversation: ‘Give me your résumé of what you do,’” said Lt. Eugene Bentley, who supervised both operations, in an interview. “This was totally different.” CL ARENCE WILLIAMS (THE WASHINGTON POST )

I guess at some point after the streetcar line opened, Arlington and Fairfax could decide to cut back on their subsidies for the Metrobus lines, but I think the most likely adjustment in bus service would be on connector routes.

I believe the law in all jurisdictions is yield to pedestrians in crosswalks (where there are no lights). However, that law is universally ignored in Virginia. You’re correct. Drivers should be yielding to pedestrians in crosswalks. (There doesn’t need to be a sign there saying so.) Hard to enforce. Police throughout the region have an annual pedestrian safety campaign called StreetSmart in which they pull over cars that violate the law. Sometimes they set up stings in which an officer steps out into the crosswalk and other officers pull over the cars that fail to yield. But violators far outnumber enforcers.

So, the Orange Line Monday was running at least 11 minutes apart (that I know of) during the height of rush hour. Should we generally assume Metro is as understaffed as most offices this week and next and assume non-rush service? No change in rush-hour schedules this week. I often get complaints about the gaps in morning rush hour trains on the Orange Line from the folks toward the western end of the line. No matter what the schedule says, trains passing through downtown get bunched up routinely, so by the time they get out to Vienna or West Falls Church and turn back, there may be big gaps.

Do you know why the Massachusetts Avenue entrance escalators are backward at Union Station (i.e., the up escalator is on the left leaving the station and the down escalator is on the left entering the station)? This causes a lot of unnecessary zigzagging every day when a trainload of MARC passengers entering the mezzanine directly from Union Station meet a mass of Metro riders trying to exit the system. This is just a guess: Metro might be thinking that people coming down the escalator should be closer to the fare vending machines. But, yes, there’s still a lot of crossover traffic. Would MARC riders be better off using the other entrance to the Metro station, the one over toward First Street?

H_Z[ Ed I[j <eh =h[[d[h 8ki H_Z[i JhWdifehjWj_ed Montgomery County’s Ride On service is adding 13 additional environmentally friendly buses, the county announced Monday. The bus service bought 12 hybrid electric-diesel buses and one clean diesel bus. The American-made buses were purchased for $6.55 million dollars using American Reinvestment and Recovery Act funds. The buses emit less nitrogen oxides and less carbon dioxide, and have better fuel economy, according to the county. (T WP)

The taxi industry has criticized Mayor Vincent Gray’s proposal as unfair. Gray says he wants to make the system easier for riders.

A Taxi Transformation Mayor unveils plan for major overhaul of D.C.’s cab system MWi^_d]jed Mayor Vincent C. Gray joined two D.C. Council members in unveiling an ambitious bill to overhaul the city’s taxicabs Monday, calling it a big step toward a “world-class transportation system” for the city. But a small group of protesters crashed his news conference Monday, denouncing the legislation as unfair to cabdrivers and heralding testy battles to come. At the John A. Wilson Building news conference, Gray and Council members Mary M. Cheh and Tommy Wells said the bill would make the taxi industry more responsive to residents. It would, among other things, mandate credit-card payment options, satellite

Fej[dj_Wb 9^Wd][i Among the bill’s other provisions:

What is now a paper recordkeeping process would be digitized. The bill would mandate devices that send trip data to the commission in real time and “can record and report all fares and earnings for tax purposes.” Cabs would be equipped with roof lights that “clearly identify when a taxicab is occupied, on-call, off-duty or available to accept a fare.” (THE WASHINGTON POST )

navigation systems, new training for drivers and a single paint color for the city’s 5,000-plus cabs. “What we have now is a total top-to-bottom transformation,” Gray said. Under the legislation, to be introduced at Tuesday’s council meeting, the D.C. Taxicab Commission could establish a surcharge,

perhaps 50 cents per trip, to help drivers pay for improvements to their vehicles through grants or low-interest loans. Cheh, D-Ward 3, chairman of the transportation committee, stressed that the public, including drivers, would have multiple opportunities to weigh in on the legislation. But as she described the details of the bill, one driver interrupted her, shouting, “I haven’t heard anything that is going to benefit me.” A few minutes later, another driver verbally sparred with Gray after the mayor said he had previously met with drivers to discuss some of their concerns. “No, you didn’t, Vincent,” said Larry Frankel, an advocate for some of the District’s taxi drivers. “Don’t tell me what I did,” Gray responded. In a new report to lawmakers, the State Lottery Agency concludes that “it is time ... to offer ... products on the Internet to remain competitive and accomplish our core mission.” The report cites estimates that lottery sales could increase by 12 to 18 percent once an online program achieves “maturity.” (T WP)

D.C. Arts Commission Set To Run Lincoln Theatre MWi^_d]jed The historic Lincoln Theatre where Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald once played on Washington’s U Street will soon have new management after worries that it could close. Mayor V i ncent Gray w i l l announce Tuesday that oversight of the city-owned theater will shift from an independent foundation

to the District of Columbia Commission on the Arts and Humanities. The commission will hire a new executive director to create a long-term plan to make the theater self-sustaining. J^[ H[Zia_di Good NFL teams are supposed to peak in December, ideally playing their best football as the playoffs approach. Even though the Redskins are assured of missing postseason play for a fourth straight year, players say recent games have shown they could have been a playoff team this season. “If we had played like this the whole time, we’d be talking about January,” said defensive end Stephen Bowen.

The Redskins had no problem toppling the division-leading New York Giants 23-10 Sunday, and though it was only their second victory in the past four games, a team that sputtered its way through the fall again showed noticeable progress on both sides of the ball. “I thought we played extremely well as a unit yesterday against a very talented offensive team,” Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said Monday. “That’s coming off three good weeks of moving the ball pretty good.” The Redskins have topped 100 rushing yards four straight weeks, they’ve won the time of possession battle in three of the past four and Sunday against the Giants they forced more turnovers than an opponent for the first time

this season. “I don’t think it’s just out of nowhere,” said nose tackle Barry Cofield. “I think we’ve been competitive for the past four weeks, for the past month. I think we’re getting better at the right time.” The modest gains are taking place without some of the Redskins’ best players — Trent Williams, Fred Davis, LaRon Landry, Chris Cooley and Tim Hightower. At a time when the season could have nose-dived, players point out

Rookie running back Roy Helu’s franchise-best streak of threestraight games with at least 100 rushing yards came to an end Sunday against the New York Giants. Coach Mike Shanahan believes a couple of undisclosed injuries to Helu were to blame. “I didn’t realize until looking at the film that he played hurt and didn’t play as good as he normally plays,” Shanahan said. Helu, who leads all active rookie running backs with 147 carries for 635 yards — 4.3 yards per carry — mustered only 53 yards on 23 carries Sunday and had a long run of only eight yards. (T WP)

they’re playing some of their best football of the year, even if it hasn’t always translated into wins. And they have a chance to end the season on a high note. This Saturday the Redskins face Minnesota, which has dropped six straight and hasn’t won a game since October. Then Washington closes out the season against a Philadelphia team that has been inconsistent from week to week. Shanahan concedes that it’s difficult as a coach to see your team perform well late in the season and not wonder how good it might have been had injuries not struck early. “That’s a part of the business,” he said. “Some years you’re very lucky. Other years you’re not.” RICK MAESE (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Young Returns to the Wizards Shooting guard inks a 1-year deal after testing the market J^[ M_pWhZi Nick Young caught a red-eye flight from Los Angeles to Washington, signed his one-year, $3.7 million qualifying offer with the Wizards on Monday and was back on the floor practicing with his teammates. It was a rapid turnaround for Young, who grew tired of waiting for his contract situation to get settled and decided it was better to get back on the court with his team, rather than wait for some-

8WYaijeho The Wizards had hoped to sign Nick Young to a long-term deal but were far apart in negotiations. Three high-ranking NBA executives said Young was seeking a contract starting around $9 million per season, while the Wizards were willing to give him something closer to the mid-level exception of $5 million, according to people with knowledge of the situation. Instead, Young took a one-year deal. (T WP)

thing else to happen. Young wasn’t totally pleased with the outcome, feeling that the NBA’s forcing training camps to coincide with the free agent negotiating period damaged his leverage and made it difficult to get the

desired deal in a down market. But instead of focusing on what didn’t happen, Young will put his attention on what he can control with the Wizards. “I’m just taking it out on the league,” said Young, who averaged a career-best 17.4 points

per game last season. “I’m not going to sit back and pout. Nobody owes nobody nothing.” Young went through the entire practice without any problems, but coach Flip Saunders was unsure whether the team’s leading scorer from last season would be available for the final preseason game on Tuesday in Philadelphia. “We’ll have to see,” Saunders said. “We’ll have a shootaround and practice tomorrow and see whether we use him tomorrow, see how he feels and that. But we open up a week from today, so we’re going to have to facilitate his progress, no question, over the next six days.” (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Nats Add Cameron To the Outfield Mix Veteran is insurance in case Harper isn’t ready for the majors J^[ DWj_edWbi The Nationals agreed to terms on a minor league contract with veteran outfielder Mike Cameron, the team announced on Thursday. Cameron’s role will shake out in spring training, reliant, in part, on the status of top prospect Bryce Harper. The signing indicates the Nationals could be willing to use a temporary solution in center field if Harper starts the year in the minors. Cameron gives the Nationals an accomplished, experienced center fielder, albeit one who will be 39 years old in January and struggled last season in stints with the

Boston Red Sox and Florida Marlins. The Red Sox released him because of ineffectiveness, and the Marlins released him, reportedly, because he got into a verbal altercation with a flight attendant on a team plane. The Nationals have spent much of this offseason trying to trade for a center fielder, but signing Cameron may indicate a belief that they will not be able to land the kind of player they desired. They still could sign Cuban defector Yoenis Cespedes, who will likely become a free agent sometime in January, and the Nationals may view Cameron’s addition as insurance if they do not land the super-athletic 26-year-old. (It could also simply mean the Nationals no longer see themselves as players for Cespedes.) (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Although it isn’t cited specifically in most wedding vows, it’s a spouse’s sacred duty to help protect his or her mate’s work from being turned into songs about body parts.

If the thing you don’t like about ice-skating is the fact that you’re sliding around on a frozen puddle, you’ll triple axel over the Zoolights rink at the National Zoo. Instead of ice, it’s an “eco-friendly synthetic ice-skating surface” that’s designed for all temperatures (including the 50s we’re getting this week). Try it every night from 5 to 9 until Jan. 1 (except Dec. 24, 25 and 31). It’s $5 for 30 minutes and $2 for skate rental. More info at Nationalzoo.si.edu.

— L A MONT PE TERSON, D.C. NATIVE AND NOW THE SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD.

LINDA DAVIDSON/TWP

You can dispute whether Lamont Peterson really deserved to win the unified super lightweight title on Dec. 10 at Washington’s biggest boxing event in nearly 20 years. (His opponent, Amir Khan, certainly did — although the International Boxing Federation just denied his appeal of the decision.) But there’s no question that Peterson was prepared for the fight. The 27-year-old D.C. native spent the weeks preceding the event practically living at the gym. The same goes for the other local boxers in the ring that night: Lamont’s 26-year-old brother, Anthony, a lightweight; and undefeated heavyweight Seth Mitchell, 29. When it comes to fighting off the holiday pounds, all three are experts. After all, there’s no taking a break from the gym when you

His lowest point: when coach Barry Hunter made them go through an exercise circuit while wearing a gas mask, which limits oxygen intake. “A few times I just wanted to pull it off. But I kept going,” he says. If that kind of training seems too punishing, try using lighter weights and decreasing the length of the workout, Hunter suggests.

FbWoijWj_ed$ The term is a joke conjured up by the coaching staff at D.C.’s Headbangers Gym, where the Petersons train. There’s no video game involved — it refers to an endurance routine that strings together a series of one-minute drills with no breaks in between. For example, one round might consist of (1) running on a treadmill set to the highest speed and incline, (2) holding dumbbells while punching as fast as possible, (3) jumping in and out of a tire while gripping a medicine ball, (4) lifting and lowering a 30-pound kettlebell and (5) hoisting up a medicine ball and circling it around your head. 9eh[ Cel[i$ Mitchell, who trains at Dream Team Boxing Gym in Clinton, Md., starts his every-otherday ab routine with 100 crunches. That’s followed by 100 V-ups, in which he lies on his back and then brings his hands and feet off the ground until they meet. Next up, he lies on one side and does a side crunch so his elbow connects with his knee. “It keeps the sexy going,” says Mitchell, who completes 100 of those on the left and the right. For the final exercise, he holds a 40-pound dumbbell in one hand by his side and bends to move the weight closer to the ground (and target his obliques). He’s not done until he has completed 100 of those on each side. “It’s quick, intense and effective,” he says of this killer combo. VICK Y HALLET T (E XPRESS)

Tranquil Space Labs plans to provide a new home for off-the-mat and off-the-wall ideas

Kimberly Wilson, wearing a popcorn garland, photographs Labs fun.

“This is hard,” declared 29-year-old Sara Askin last Thursday at Dupont Circle’s Tranquil Space (1632 17th St. NW; Tranquilspace.com). She wasn’t referring to a balance or a bind, the stuff that normally challenges yogis. Instead, her will was being tested by a thick-peeled orange that didn’t want to get studded with cloves. She was battling fruit to help launch the studio’s newest addition: Tranquil Space Labs. Until Oct. 31, it had housed a spa, but new D.C. requirements persuaded owner Kimberly Wilson to get out of the massage business.

With the extra room, she’s decided to get experimental. “The idea is to be able to try things out in a more intimate setting,” says Wilson, who explains that even with three studio spaces, it’s tough to schedule small workshops and offthe-mat activities. She envisions holding movie screenings, charity benefits and lectures in the Labs, which can hold about a dozen mats. The space is also serving as the set for Tranquil Space TV, weekly videos on how to do certain poses and advice on advancing your practice. That’s laying the groundwork for possible future e-courses on topics such as nutrition, detox and creativity. “I feel like innovation is so critical. It’s important to be constantly exploring,” Wilson says. At the Labs launch, participants tested the limits of their crafting abilities

with the orange pomanders, popcorn garlands and pipe-cleaner snowflakes. Prosecco and nibbles got attendees into the holiday spirit. And it helped cushion the blow of losing the spa for Askin. “I’m going to miss it,” she said. “When I got the email it was closing, I thought, ‘Oh, my God, no!’” But when Askin and other attendees heard about the plans for Labs, the response was more along the lines of “Yes, please.” “I’d like to see some kind of cooking class, maybe Ayurvedic foods,” offered 37-year-old Sheri Willoughby. Victoria Barth, 28, was on board for watching documentaries. “This almost feels like a bedroom — it’s such a chillaxing place,” she said. So maybe the Labs can also serve the purpose of a spa even without any massages. V.H.

Banana: If you’re prone to migraines while riding in a car, one of these may help. Bananas are rich in magnesium; a deficiency in this mineral can result in headaches and fatigue. Plus, a medium banana has only about 100 calories.

Soda looks tasty until you learn how far you need to run to burn 250 calories.

Running Away From Soda The calories are listed on the back of each bottle of soda. But call teens’ attention to the numbers — and what they mean — and that drink suddenly becomes less appealing, according to a study published in the American Journal of Public Health. Researchers posted signs at corner stores in Baltimore and checked in how the messages affected sales. “Did you know that working off a bottle of soda or fruit juice takes about 50 minutes of running?” halved the odds of adolescents’ buying a sugarsweetened beverage. 9>?B: H;7H?D=

Anything for a Gold Star Trying to coax a kid into eating a carrot (or cabbage or cucumber) with words is pointless. But if you have stickers, they might be willing to bite. A study published the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that giving adhesive bribes to 3- and 4-year-olds helped improve their attitudes toward veggies they’d previously shunned. The kids were still willing to eat the produce three months after the 12-day experiment, which indicates lasting effects. 97H:?EBE=O

Don’t Heart Snow Days If you’re bummed we don’t seem to be in for a white Christmas, console yourself with the fact that snow shoveling increases the risk of heart attacks. Kim Jong Out

8eea H[l_[m

Kim Jong Il, the North Korean dictator who died Saturday, was many things to his country: Dear Leader. Doting father. Crackpot autocrat. But only a year ago, his government’s propaganda machine — which he controlled — declared Kim to be a global fashion icon, further proving just how out of touch with reality the isolated country has become. To bolster his style cred, the state newspaper quoted an anonymous French style 8o AWj^[h_d[ expert as saying, “The 8eob[ ‘Kim Jong-Il style fad’ is rapidly spreading out to the world!” North Koreans have been fed a lot of nonsense about Kim. For instance, legend has it Kim’s birth was heralded by a pair of rainbows and a new star. But look at his bouffant hair, zip-up uniform and 3-D goggles: Really, North Korea? The idea that Kim’s arrival caused an astrological shift seems less ridiculous than praising his “humble jacket” as a must-have. Still, North Korea’s statement on fashion reveals much about Kim. Like Moammar Gadhafi, the brute seemed preoccupied with making an international best-dressed list. Lack of sartorial respect seems to annoy some tyrants. Fortunately, we’ll never be able to ask this one why.

On Aug. 1, 1981, long before people were conditioned to want their MTV, Warner-Amex Satellite Entertainment gave birth to a cultural revolution. It was televised, albeit just barely: The nascent music-video channel was unavailable through most cable carriers, so hardly anybody could bear witness to its glitchy launch even if they’d wanted to. The first video was an obvious one: “Video Killed the Radio Star,” by the Buggles. Pat Benatar was next. MTV’s arrival as an unstoppable youth-culture juggernaut came later, to the surprise of, well, pretty much everyone. “Hardly anyone thought it would succeed,” we are told at the outset of “I Want My MTV,” an enormous, wildly entertaining book that covers the first 11 tongue-wagging years of MTV’s existence, before reality programming began to push the music out. (Making videos also became prohibitively expensive, and all the good ideas had already been done, according to people quoted in the book. So, then, video killed the video star?) It seems almost unthinkable now,

Behind the Music (Television) Presented as an oral history, “I Want My MTV” is crammed with quotes from hundreds of record executives; artist managers; video directors; fashion models; MTV executives and staffers; and, of course, the musicians. Their recollections tell the story of the channel’s rise, with plenty of asides about bad hair, bad videos and bad attitudes. (T WP)

but videos featuring musicians and their songs were rare in 1981. In fact, there were so few circulating — and so few good ones — that MTV in its infancy would play nearly anything. But videos quickly became important calling cards, rather than afterthoughts, and image was suddenly one of the most important parts of the pop calculus. According to Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh, “MTV changed the architecture of being an artist.” Before MTV hoisted Michael and Madonna onto the Mount Rushmore of pop idols; before it became one of the world’s most powerful media brands, MTV “sounded like an asinine idea,” according to Bob Pittman, one of the channel’s founding fathers. But MTV became a galvanizing force — perhaps the last one before mass culture splintered into a billion niches. J. FREEDOM DU L AC (THE WASHINGTON POST )

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) An uncomfortable situation is likely to develop if you are not willing to say what has to be said when it has to be said. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You’re after something more at this time, but you may not know just where to look. Today, you receive a few important clues. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Keep irritations to a minimum by avoiding situations that you cannot control. Evening offers an unusual choice. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You may be surrounded by minor dangers that, taken one at a time, aren’t all that serious. Together they add up to a major threat. ARIES (March 21-April 19) Strife at home isn’t likely to be eased simply through compromise. Certain difficult issues must be faced head-on.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) That which is none of your business as the day begins is likely to be very much your business later on — and perhaps only your business, too. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You may be wondering how certain things happen — and you may witness a demonstration of fate that answers your questions. CANCER (June 21-July 22) Take care that you don’t hesitate — or you may find that others are surging ahead of you in what is really a serious contest.
