Charm City cheer Baltimore’s enduring eccentricities shine in the holiday season. BALTIMORE From kitschy ornaments to model train extravaganzas and a holiday song dedicated to bottomfeeding crustaceans, Baltimore’s unique brand of quirky creativity really shines at Christmas. There’s no shortage of Baltimore natives who tweak festivities with some of their hometown’s enduring eccentricities. Wrapped around a cove of the Chesapeake Bay, Baltimore has its own seasonal carol paying homage to its favorite delicacy. David DeBoy wrote “Crabs for

Christmas” in 1981, and it’s become a holiday staple. The song tells the story of a “big fella” from Maryland who finds himself in Texas at Christmastime, pining for a Baltimore feast: “Oh, I want crabs for Christmas/ Oh, only crabs will do/Oh ho, with crabs for Christmas/My Christmas wish’ll come true.” In Baltimore’s Hampden neighborhood, an explosion of multicolored lights, glittering snowmen and designs of Maryland’s beloved crabs line a block of row

“Yeah they’re quirky, but they’re proudly individual and they’re just fine with that.” DAVID DEBOY, who wrote the Baltimore-inspired holiday song”Crabs for Christmas,” on why Baltimoreans have such unique Christmas traditions. page three houses. Known as “The Miracle on 34th Street” (pictured), it is perhaps the city’s most beloved seasonal institution, attracting thousands each December. It’s now in its 71st year. “This is just neighbors coming together. It’s 100 percent Baltimore,” said resident Shacara Waithe, across the street from a yard dominated by a Christmas tree made entirely of hubcaps and ornaments fashioned from cartons of Old Bay seafood seasoning. The oldest Baltimore-area holiday custom is “Christmas Gardens,” which has roots in its 19th-century German immigrant community. The “train gardens” are a fading tradition, but some firehouses still set up the imaginative displays of model trains chugging past fantastical townscapes that firefighters spend months planning and assembling each year. Dean Krimmel, a historian and 55-year resident of Baltimore, suggested that Baltimoreans just happen to be more comfortable sharing, celebrating and promoting their eccentricities. “What others now call eccentric and pay good money to experience when they visit us, read about us, watch movies about us ... we call that our inheritance. Our ‘value-added’ in an increasingly homogenized world,” Krimmel said. DAVID MCFADDEN (AP)

Tied Va. race left to chance

Election board will pick a name at random next week for House control

For now, GOP wins final Va. House recount AP AND THE WASHINGTON POST

VIRGINIA On CNN, they were holding up film canisters. On Twitter, there were suggestions of an oystershucking contest. Some called for a return to the duel. Much of Virginia and the political world was fascinated Thursday by the tied vote in a key state House race — which will determine which political party controls the House of Delegates — and how to break it. A state law that is rarely invoked requires tied elections to be settled by “lot.” More specifically, members of the state election board will gather in Richmond next Wednesday at 11 a.m. to randomly pick either Republican incumbent David Yancey or Democratic challenger Shelly Simonds in the tied race for the 94th House district. Their names will be tucked inside two film canisters placed into a bowl, hat or other receptacle. “This will be one of the most watched lot draws in American history,” CNN reporter Ryan Nobles said Thursday as he held up a film canister and passed it to host Wolf Blitzer, who added that there were “national implications” to the exercise. If not national implications, certainly statewide, as the winner of the race will reshuffle the political landscape in Richmond. Yancey emerged from Election Day with a 10-vote victory margin over Simonds. A recount

David Yancey, left, and Shelly Simonds are tied in their Va. House race; it will be up to luck to determine a winner.

on Tuesday allowed Simonds to pull ahead by Yancey by a single vote. But a three-judge panel on Wednesday decided that one ballot that wasn’t tallied during a recount should count for Yancey, making the race a tie. Currently, Republicans control 50 seats while Democrats hold 49 in the lower chamber. If Simonds wins, it would force the parties into a rare powersharing situation. As election officials forged ahead with plans for the random drawing, Simonds on Thursday railed against a court that overturned her brief one-vote win over Yancey. “I think the court made a really bad call and I want to make sure it gets attention,” she said by phone after a gantlet of TV interviews. With next week’s tiebreaker determining the future of what one former speaker liked to call

Settling a tie vote Settling a tie election is nothing new in American politics. Here’s a look at how other tied elections have recently been settled. (AP) A seat on the Esmeralda County Commission in Nevada was decided 15 years ago in Old-West style. The county clerk-treasurer shuffled a deck and fanned the cards out on a table like a casino dealer. Both candidates drew jacks, but the Democrat’s spade beat out the Republican’s diamond. The winner hugged his wife, while the loser wiped away a tear. This year in Manteo, N.C., settling an election to the town commission required two recounts, a drawing of straws and a coin toss. In Alaska in 2006, a coin flip broke the tie in a Democratic primary for a state House seat. The incumbent called “heads” and lost. Six years later, a candidate in an Ohio city council race called “tails” and lost.

the “oldest continuously elected law-making body in the New World,” James Alcorn, chairman of the state board of elections, has set to work finding a suitable container. “We’re looking for something more dignified and appropriate for the situation this time,” he said. “Something to celebrate the history and culture of Virginia.” Still, Clara Belle Wheeler, the Republican member of the board of elections, said there’s something troubling about deciding an important matter by trivial means. “It’s almost … I don’t want to say capricious, but arbitrary,” she said. “The speaker of the House will be determined by a person pulling a name out of a hat, [that] seems disrespectful to the people who need representation.” “But,” she added, “we have no other choice.” JENNA PORTNOY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

BALTIMORE FIRE DEATHS

The number of people in Baltimore killed in fires so far this year, the highest in a decade. Fire Chief Niles R. Ford said the high number has taken a toll on the city’s firefighters. Ford urged residents to call the city for a free installation of a 10-year smoke detector. He also urged residents to keep their Christmas trees watered. (AP)

Key labor union backs Alsobrooks, not Edwards, in Prince George’s executive race

VIRGINIA The last of four recounts in Virginia House of Delegates races ended Thursday with the status quo confirmed — Republican Bob Thomas appeared to win against Democrat Joshua Cole by a margin of 75 votes. But whether Thomas ultimately retains that seat in the 28th District remains unclear, as the race is the subject of a pending federal court challenge. Democrats are seeking a new election because more than 100 voters were given the wrong ballot on Election Day. A hearing has been set for Jan. 5, five days before the General Assembly is set to reconvene. The recount changed Thomas’ margin of victory over Cole from 82 votes to 75 votes. The district spans parts of Fredericksburg and Stafford County and is represented by Speaker William J. Howell, R, who is retiring. Stafford County Chief Circuit Court Judge Overton Harris, who oversaw the recount court in the 28th District matchup between Thomas and Cole, initially barred media from Thursday’s proceedings. But after an appeal by an attorney for the The Washington Post, the chief judge granted a petition for public access to the recount. The Post was allowed to enter the recount room, while two radio reporters were permitted to watch from an adjacent conference room. FENIT NIRAPPIL (TWP)

THE DISTRICT The first six people to face trial in Inauguration Day protests that turned destructive were acquitted of all charges, a victory not only for the defendants but also for advocates who argued the government overreached in its effort to prosecute more than 200 people arrested as they marched through the nation’s capital. Following a nearly four-week trial and two full days of deliberations, a D.C. Superior Court jury delivered not-guilty verdicts Thursday on multiple charges of rioting and destruction of property. The defendants — including a nurse for cancer patients, a freelance photographer and a college student — joined throngs of protesters who took to the streets Jan. 20 to protest Donald Trump’s election. Prosecutors said the six were among a group that cut a violent swath through 16 bocks of the city, smashing windows of businesses, tossing newspaper boxes into the street and damaging a limousine. Authorities tallied the damage at more than $100,000. As the jury foreman read the not-guilty verdicts, the defendants began to smile. One of them, Alexei Wood, a 37-year-old

freelance photographer from San Antonio, covered his face, sat down and began sobbing. Jennifer Armento, 38, a Philadelphia woman who was among the six, said the verdict “shows the country that the jury was unwilling to do what the government wanted them to do, which was criminalize dissent.” Oliver Harris, 28, a Drexel University doctoral student who was charged, said the acquittal was “the only just verdict.” Also acquitted were Michelle Macchio, 26, of Naples, Fla.; Christina Simmons, 20, of Cockeysville, Md.; and Brittne Lawson, 27, of Pittsburgh. From the start, defense attorneys said their clients and most others in the group of about 500 were peacefully protesting, while

only a handful peeled off and became violent. They criticized police for failing to identify those people and said officers unfairly herded a group of about 200 and charged them with rioting. An additional 166 defendants are scheduled for trial, in groups of six or seven, through mid-2018. Though the U.S. attorney’s office said it would move forward, one defense attorney said prosecutors should interpret the acquittal as a sign that the remaining cases should be dropped. “I hope this sends a message to the U.S. attorney’s office to let all of these people go,” said attorney Betty Ballester, who represents one of the defendants scheduled to go to trial in April. “The jury has spoken.” KEITH L. Two more charged in MS-13 slaying PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VA. Two more men have been arrested and charged with firstdegree murder in the MS-13-related killing of a Fairfax County high school student in August, Prince William County police said Thursday. Tomas Antonio Pino-Mejia, 19, and Ismael Antonio Hernandez-Navarro, 19, both of no fixed address, were arrested in Frederick, Md., and Tennessee respectively in recent days in the killing of Miguel Angel Ruiz Carrillo, 18. Four others were arrested previously in the case. The killing is the latest in a series of brutal slayings in Virginia and Maryland tied to a resurgent MS-13 gang, which is the region’s largest and most violent. Ruiz Carrillo, who had ties to MS-13, met gang members in a wooded area Aug. 3 near his home in the Alexandria section of Fairfax County, according to

recently unsealed search warrants in Fairfax County. He was assaulted, driven from the scene and never heard from again. Ruiz Carrillo’s body was discovered in Nokesville, Va., on Aug. 22, police said. Detectives uncovered information during the investigation that led them to search the area where his remains were discovered. Mercedes Carrillo, the victim’s mother, said at the time that friends of her son’s saw a group attack him near a pond close to their apartment in the 4200 block of Buckman Road. She said she did not think he was in MS-13. The announcement of the new arrests came a day after a federal indictment was filed against two Maryland MS-13 members, who were accused of fatally beating and stabbing a homeless man so they could be promoted in the gang. Congress averts shutdown Stopgap funds put off decisions on budget, immigration until 2018 POLITICS The Republican-led Congress narrowly passed a temporary spending bill to avert a government shutdown Thursday, doing the bare minimum in a sprint toward the holidays and punting disputes on immigration, health care and national security to next year. The measure passed the House on a 231-188 vote over Democratic opposition and then cleared the Senate, 66-32, with Democrats from Republicanleaning states providing just enough votes. President Trump

is expected to sign the measure. In addition, an $81 billion measure to deliver disaster aid victims of hurricanes and fires passed the House on a bipartisan 251-169 tally but stalled in the Senate. Congress will return in January facing enormous challenges on immigration, the federal budget, health care and national security along with legislation to increase the government’s authority to borrow money. “The more stuff that’s pushed into January, it’s unfortunate because we’ll have to do this all over again,” said Republican Sen. John Thune of South Dakota. “But at some point we’ve got to make the hard decisions.” The stopgap legislation would

Urban killings rise in clusters

MICHAEL B. THOMAS (GETTY IMAGES)

Indianapolis: The city’s three deadliest ZIP codes in 2016 accounted for 43 percent of the record 149 homicides — a total that was just surpassed this year — and more than 20 percent of the slayings occurred in a single ZIP code.

St. Louis: The city saw 188 murders in 2015 — a record number and an increase of more than 18 percent from 2014. Most of that increase came from just two ZIP codes, and in seven of the city’s 17 ZIP codes, homicides fell.

SCOTT OLSON (GETTY IMAGES)

CRIME When she started an urban farm in one of Indianapolis’ roughest neighborhoods, retired chemist Aster Bekele wanted to teach at-risk kids how to garden, and maybe sneak in a little science. Then the city’s homicide rate started soaring, with most of the killings happening around the community center where Bekele and the teens tended their vegetables. After her own son was killed last summer, she found herself teaching a different lesson: how to deal with death. A few miles away, another rough neighborhood was experiencing a change — equally dramatic but just the opposite. The Fountain Square section near downtown, which once saw nearly as many killings as Bekele’s area, was transforming into one of the city’s safer spots thanks to an influx of affluent people drawn to its hip restaurants, bicycle trails and art festivals. The contrast illustrates an Associated Press analysis of homicide data that showed some large cities seem to be getting safer and more dangerous at the same time. Slayings in Chicago, St. Louis and Indianapolis are becoming concentrated into small areas where people are dying at a pace not seen in years, if ever. Around them, much of the rest of the city is growing more peaceful, even as the total number of

Chicago: The city ended 2016 with 762 homicides, the highest in two decades. But in almost a third of ZIP codes that reported a homicide in the past decade, the trend has been fewer killings. Last year, 60 percent of the killings were in just 10 of the city’s roughly 58 ZIP codes. (AP)

homicides rises. “There’s two different worlds,” said Anthony Beverly, who grew up in Indianapolis and now runs an organization called Stop The Violence. “Downtown is just popping. … We struggle.” The AP collected 10 years of homicide data from the cities that had the highest homicide rates in 2016. Reporters used spatial analysis to identify clusters of killings and track the changing geographic patterns over time. The neighborhoods enduring the most violence were largely poor and African-American, as were the killers and the victims. Researchers say the disparity may be linked to increased joblessness, segregation and the growth of the so-called wealth gap. Over the past three decades, the wealthiest Americans have grown markedly richer while low earners lost jobs and struggled and some turned to violence. The trend goes beyond the problem neighborhoods and trendy, low-crime enclaves that are found in almost every city. The inequality between the two realities deepened in recent years, allowing people in the same metropolis to live in one realm with little sense of the other and creating districts of despair where everyone has seen or had someone close to them shot or killed. Daniel Hertz, a Chicago-based researcher, has argued for years that citywide homicide statistics are “basically meaningless.” Looking at smaller areas, he said, gives a far more accurate picture. Unauthorized baptisms by Mormons cited RELIGION Mormons are posthumously baptizing Holocaust victims as well as grandparents of public figures like Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton despite church rules intended to restrict the ceremonies to a member’s ancestors, according to a researcher who has spent two decades monitoring the church’s genealogical database. The discoveries made by former Mormon Helen Radkey (above) likely will bring new scrutiny to the deeply misunderstood practice. The church acknowledged the ceremonies violated its policy and said they would be invalidated. Proxy baptisms are tied to a church teaching that families spend eternity together. The rituals provide the deceased a choice in the afterlife to accept or reject the offer of baptism. They are recorded in a password-protected part of the church’s online database accessible only to members. Despite church rules against the practice, Radkey’s research shows that in the past five years, proxy baptisms were performed on at least 20 Holocaust victims. They also were performed on Humphrey Bogart and Marilyn Monroe; the mother of Queen Elizabeth II; and grandparents of Kim Kardashian, Joe Biden, John McCain and Mike Pence. Radkey said she found no evidence those people had ancestral ties to Mormons. BRADY MCCOMBS (AP)

Catalonia separatists regain a slim majority

A CHARGED DEBATE

Apple admits it slows down old iPhones

SPAIN Catalonia’s secessionist parties won enough votes Thursday to regain a slim majority in the regional parliament and give new momentum to their political struggle for independence from Spain. It was hardly an emphatic victory, however, as the separatists lost support compared with the previous vote in 2015, and a prounity party for the first time became Catalonia’s biggest single force in parliament. The anti-independence, probusiness Ciutadans (Citizens) party garnered 37 seats in the 135-seat regional assembly with 99 percent of the votes counted. Junts per Catalunya (Together for Catalonia), the party of fugitive Catalan president Carles Puigdemont, garnered 34 seats, left-republican ERC was third with 32 and the anti-capitalist CUP won four seats. The three pro-independence forces together make up 70 seats, two above a majority but two less than in the previous 2015 election. “The election has resolved very little,” said Andrew Dowling, a specialist in Catalan history at Cardiff University in Wales. “Independence has won but in a way similar to 2015. Majority of seats but not in votes.”

Close win gives parties a momentum boost in fight for independence

Supporters of Junts per Catalunya (Together for Catalonia) celebrate in Barcelona upon hearing election results Thursday.

Puigdemont, who was dismissed by Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s government, campaigned from Belgium, where he is evading a Spanish arrest warrant in a rebellion and sedition probe. He greeted the result with delight, but rebuked Spain’s central government. “The Spanish state has been defeated,” Puigdemont said. “Mariano Rajoy has received a slap in the face from Catalonia.” The result leaves more questions than answers about what’s next for Catalonia, where a longstanding push for independence escalated to a full-on clash with Spain two months ago. The result is a blow to Rajoy, who ousted the Catalan Cabinet and called the early election

hoping to keep the separatists out of power and to end the political crisis that erupted in October over a banned referendum on independence. His ruling Popular Party had a poor showing in the Catalan election, left with only three seats in the regional assembly from 11 held in the previous parliament. Rajoy has said that taking over control of the region again would be something he would consider if independence, which is against Spain’s constitution, is sought by a new Catalan government. Catalan voters turned up in force for the election seen as a crucial test of strength for the powerful movement that wants Catalonia to split from Spain.

Apple acknowledged a long-standing rumor Wednesday that as old iPhone batteries age, Apple’s software slows the devices down to protect the phone. Many folks saw it as a sly way to persuade users to buy new devices. It costs $80 to have Apple replace the battery — less in some repair shops or doing it yourself, but doing that voids the warranty. The battery replacement problem is an example of why many gadget lovers are calling for laws to ensure consumers have a legal “right to repair” their own devices. Guess who has lobbied against those laws? Tech companies, including Apple. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Al Franken bade farewell to Capitol Hill on Thursday with a lengthy broadside against the policies of the Trump administration and a call for politicians to commit themselves to “honesty in public discourse.” The speech put to rest questions about whether Franken, D-Minn., would follow through on his promise to resign over more than a half-dozen allegations that he had touched women inappropriately. Until Wednesday, Franken had not announced the date he would leave the Senate, and at least two Democratic colleagues recently said that he should reverse his decision. In his farewell address, Franken lamented what he described as the degradation of truth in the national political debate. He will resign his seat Jan. 2. His successor, Minnesota Lt. Gov. Tina Smith, D, is scheduled to be sworn in Jan. 3. “As I leave the Senate, I have to admit that it feels like we’re losing the war for truth,” Franken said. “Maybe it’s already lost. If that’s what happens, then we have lost the ability to have the kinds of arguments that help build consensus.” As Republicans celebrated the passage of their tax plan, Franken denounced the bill as a means of “showering corporations and wealthy donors with tax breaks and special favors.” ELISE VIEBECK (THE WASHINGTON POST)

U.S. slams U.N. after it rejects Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley tells the General Assembly that opposing the U.S. has consequences.

UNITED NATIONS The U.N. General Assembly voted overwhelmingly Thursday in protest against President Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, largely ignoring Trump’s threats to cut off aid to any country that went against him. The nonbinding resolution declaring U.S. action on Jerusalem “null and void” passed by a vote of 128-9 — a victory for the Palestinians, but one that was not as big as they had predicted. Amid the Trump administration’s threats, 35 of the 193 U.N. member nations abstained and 21 others were absent. The resolution, sponsored by Yemen and Turkey, reaffirmed what has been the United Nations’ stand on the divided holy city since 1967: that Jerusalem’s final status must be decided in direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said afterward that he totally rejects the “preposterous” resolution. The U.S. and Israel had waged an intensive lobbying campaign against the resolution, with U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley sending letters to over 180 countries warning that Washington would be taking names of those who voted against the U.S. Trump went further, threatening a funding cutoff: “Let them vote against us. We’ll save a lot. We don’t care.” But when it came to the vote, major U.S. aid recipients including Afghanistan, Egypt, Jordan, Pakistan, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Tanzania and South Africa supported the resolution. Egypt received $1.4 billion in U.S. aid this year, and Jordan about $1.3 billion. The nine countries voting “no” were the U.S., Israel, Guatemala, Honduras, Micronesia, Nauru,

Palau, the Marshall Islands and Togo. Among the notable abstentions were Australia, Argentina, Canada, Colombia, Croatia, Czech Republic and Mexico. Many of the countries that abstained said they would keep their embassies in Tel Aviv and pointedly insisted that the status of Jerusalem should be left to the final stage of negotiations. The absent countries included Kenya, which was the fifth-largest recipient of U.S. aid last year, Georgia and Ukraine, all of which have close U.S. ties. The U.S. is to dispense $25.8 billion in foreign aid for 2018. Trump’s threat had raised the stakes at Thursday’s emergency meeting and triggered accusations from Muslims of U.S. bullying, blackmail and intimidation. Yemeni Ambassador Khaled Hussein Mohamed Alyemany called Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem “a blatant violation of the rights of the Palestinian

We will remember it when, once again, we are called up to make the world’s largest contribution to the U.N., and we will remember it when many countries come calling on us to pay even more and to use our influence for their benefit.” Haley said the vote will make no difference on U.S. plans to move its embassy to Jerusalem, but it “will make a difference on how Americans look at the U.N., and on how we look at countries who disrespect us in the U.N.” EDITH M. HEALTH U.S. deaths from drug overdoses skyrocketed 21 percent last year, and for the second straight year dragged down how long Americans are expected to live. The government figures released Thursday put drug deaths at 63,600, up from 52,000 in 2015. For the first time, the painkiller fentanyl and its close opioid cousins played a bigger role in the deaths than any other legal or illegal drug. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said twothirds of last year’s drug deaths — about 42,000 — involved opioids, a category that includes heroin, methadone, prescription pain pills such as OxyContin and fentanyl. Fatal overdoses that involved fentanyl and fentanyllike drugs doubled in one year, to more than 19,000. Heroin was tied to 15,500 deaths and prescription painkillers to 14,500. The drug deaths weigh into the CDC’s annual calculation of the average time a person is expected to live. After decades on the rise, last year marked the first time in more than a halfcentury that U.S. life expectancy fell two consecutive years. Typically, life expectancy goes back up after a one-year decline. A baby born last year in the U.S. is expected to live about 78 years and 7 months, the CDC said. A baby born in 2015 was expected to live about a month longer and one born in 2014 two months longer. MIKE STOBBE (AP)

Lack of demand for seats at FedEx Field makes late-season tickets very affordable.

3 THINGS TO WATCH

TONI L. SANDYS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Bronco busters

RICK SNIDER | SPORTS GURU

Deck the halls at FedEx

Spending Christmas Eve at FedEx Field sounds like a creative judge’s sentence for shoplifting. Nothing builds festive spirit like being stuck in traffic. When the Broncos visit the Redskins on Sunday (1 p.m., CBS), fans can sing along to “12 balls a dropping, 11 failed third downs…” all the way to “… one tarnished season for each team.” Attendance will likely be light, as crowds in Landover, Md., have already dwindled. But with Washington’s season finale coming next week at the Giants, this is your last chance to see the Redskins at home this year. Here’s why you should go.

Retake the stands

Maybe say goodbye

Enjoy the value

Root for the favorite

Give in to the spirit

You won’t be surrounded by visiting fans for once. Without a solid quarterback, the Broncos are 5-9 and having their own bad season. This is a game for the locals. A real Washingtonian knows how to endure. In the last few years, the “Faithful 40,000” have filled FedEx Field while visiting fans make up the rest of the crowd. This game could feel like the old RFK Stadium days, with burgundy blanketing the stadium until halftime, when the crowd will begin to thin — especially if Denver is leading. Try singing “Hail to the Redskins” instead of a holiday jingle.

The civil war between Redskins fans split over rooting for Kirk Cousins might end this offseason, when Washington will either empty its coffers — hopefully Dan Snyder invested in bitcoin — to pay the quarterback or let him leave as a free agent. So, who wants to miss their potential last chance to boo or cheer Cousins? You know you want to chant “You like that” one more time. If Colt McCoy starts next season, this will be considered the end of the good old days. Teammates should carry Cousins off the field, or at least give him a Gatorade bath. Then again, maybe the good times won’t end.

You can grab an upperdeck seat on StubHub for as low as $6. You can find a parking spot for $15, compared to the regular $50. If you’re a savvy haggler, you can even show up without tickets and trade candy bars for seats, as Washington Post columnist Dan Steinberg managed to do last week. The days of crazy scalper prices at RFK Stadium are long gone. FedEx Field has become a bargainhunter’s paradise. Even preseason games weren’t this low. Who can resist? Remember how affordable this was in 10 years when tickets in the new stadium force you to take out a second mortgage.

The Redskins are 83-83-1 at FedEx Field, so based on history its a coin toss whether they will beat the Broncos. But Denver is 1-6 on the road this year, and the Redskins opened as four-point favorites. Everything points to a Washington win, which often means a loss for this bunch. But maybe you’ll get to sing the team song after a few touchdowns, high-five friends and clink beers. Dance in the aisles to Mariah Carey’s “All I want for Christmas is You,” and add a line about wanting a Redskins win, too. If Washington wins, you’ll have a happy holiday memory to reflect upon for years to come.

Where else can you say “Bah humbug” after another 2-yard run by Samaje Perine? Or share a cold one with a dude dressed as Santa? If the 6-8 Redskins lose, assuring a sub-.500 finish, you could throw coal onto the field. Maybe the Redskins will paint the turf some festive color. What goes with dirt? Forget color rush jerseys — make the entire offensive line play in elf suits. Maybe the team’s gift will be a home victory, keeping the team undefeated at FedEx until August. Can the Redskins Marching Band play “The Twelve Days of Christmas” without passing out? Maybe Tailgate Ted will cook goose.

NFL Network: Giants expected to interview ESPN analyst Louis Riddick for GM job

After losing eight straight, the Broncos have put together backto-back wins, but the Redskins rebounded from their own twogame skid Sunday and look to string together a strong finish. (EXPRESS)

3 Payback for Bibbs RB Kapri Bibbs appeared in 12 games for the Broncos last year, but they traded him to the 49ers this year. He caught a 36-yard TD pass for the Redskins last week.

2 Hot stretch for Lanier Second-year defensive end Anthony Lanier II has five sacks in his past five games, including two last week. Denver is tied for the fifthmost sacks allowed (43).

1 Audition for Cousins The Broncos are No. 1 in total defense but don’t have their QB of the future. Kirk Cousins has a shot to persuade them to join a potential bidding war if he gets to enter free agency.

Stumbling Seahawks may face end of an era

NFL Week 16 preview FANTASY SPOTLIGHT

RB Devonta Freeman, Falcons at Saints, 1 p.m. Sunday

Tevin Coleman (concussion) is questionable, and Freeman has logged 24 and 22 carries in his past two games, running for a seasonhigh 126 yards Monday at Tampa Bay. The winner of this game clinches a playoff berth.

Tough roster decisions lie ahead for perennial contender in the NFC

TALL TASK

QB Jacoby Brissett, Colts at Ravens, 4:30 p.m. Saturday, NFLN

During the Colts’ five-game losing streak, he’s completed just 56.7 percent of passes and thrown for 164 yards per game. The Ravens have an NFL-high 22 interceptions and rank in the top 10 in sacks and passing defense. Richard Sherman, left, and Kam Chancellor are among the Seahawks’ injured defensive stars.

TED S. WARREN (AP)

NFL Seattle’s run of success has been magnificent, not exactly Patriotslike, but superb compared to the rest of the NFL. The Seahawks have won one Super Bowl and were an ill-fated play call at the 1-yard line from winning another. They have been a contender for more than half a decade. For most of this season, the Seahawks seemed capable of adding to that list of accomplishments. But the narrative can change quickly in the NFL, and it has changed in recent weeks for Seattle. When the Seahawks visit Dallas on Sunday, there is room to wonder if this is a last stand of sorts for them. “When you lose a couple games in a row, it’s no fun,” coach Pete Carroll said this week. “That’s different. We rarely have been in that situation.” A wild-card playoff spot may now be out of reach for the Seahawks (8-6). A 42-7 loss at home to the Rams completed the passing of the torch in the NFC West. The “Legion of Boom” secondary has been decimated by injuries. Cornerback Richard Sherman and safety Kam Chancellor

WILD CARD

WR Marquise Goodwin, 49ers vs. Jaguars, 4:05 p.m. Sunday

are out for the season. So, too, is defensive end Cliff Avril. That secondary and that defense, along with quarterback Russell Wilson, have been the centerpieces of the Seahawks teams that reached the playoffs the previous five seasons. The focus in the offseason will be on general manager John Schneider. Sherman will count $13.2 million against next season’s salary cap. Safety Earl Thomas will count $10.4 million, and Chancellor $9.8 million. There has been speculation that they could be among those to exit in a roster overhaul, possibly along with Avril and defensive end Michael Bennett. Tight end Jimmy Graham and defensive

lineman Sheldon Richardson are eligible for free agency. There was a time when the Seahawks had a championshipwinning QB playing on the rookie contract of a third-round pick. Those days are gone. Wilson counts $23.8 million against next season’s salary cap. The flexibility to spend on other parts of the team is not what it once was. At this point, the Seahawks have a here-and-now focus. That means trying to beat the Cowboys and finding a way to sneak into the playoffs. Would that change the inevitability of a roster reconstruction? Perhaps not. But it might reduce the urgency attached to it. MARK MASKE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

In the three games QB Jimmy Garoppolo has started, the 49ers are 3-0, and Goodwin has 319 yards receiving. He faces a “Sacksonville” defense that has two Pro Bowl corners and is looking to clinch the AFC South.

Seahawks fined $100K for violating protocol

Teammates say Alex Ovechkin is playing with more energy and is creating his own shot more.

Seattle was fined $100,000 for not properly following concussion protocol with quarterback Russell Wilson on Nov. 9 in a 22-16 win over the Cardinals. The NFL and NFLPA announced the penalty Thursday after an investigation of more than a month. Seattle’s coaching and medical staffs will be required to attend remedial training regarding the concussion protocol. The Seahawks are the first team fined for such a violation. The investigation found that Wilson was allowed back on the field before being evaluated. (AP)

lead the NHL in power-play goals in each of the last five seasons. Last year, though, Ovechkin’s five-on-five production dipped. His 16 even-strength goals in 82 games ranked 67th in the NHL and were a career low for a full season. “Ovi is so unique and shoots it so well that you trust the production on the power play,” coach Barry Trotz said. “But really where he can have a major impact for us is in the five-on-five game.” The impact has been felt not only in the volume of goals, but in the way he’s getting them. Ovechkin has scored on two breakaways in the past month. And on Nov. 25 in Toronto, he carried the puck 114 feet and deked multiple defenders for the first of his three goals in a 4-2 win. Holtby called that game one of the

best Ovechkin’s played in years. “I think right now the game is so tight,” Ovechkin said, “and so if you have the speed and can move through the neutral zone, you have to use it.” Defenseman John Carlson,

Ovechkin’s teammate for nine seasons, has also seen a difference. “He’s obviously always been passionate,” Carlson said, “but it seems that he’s playing with a little bit of a chip on his shoulder.” With 581 career goals, Ovechkin has climbed from No. 26 before the season to No. 20 on the all-time goal-scoring list. “If I was passing a guy every week on the ladder of milestones and history, I’d be flying out there too,” linemate Tom Wilson said. Ovechkin is on pace for his eighth 50-goal season. Despite averaging nearly a full minute more of ice-time this year, he’s shown few signs of slowing down. “He’s shown glimpses of a 19-year-old Ovi flying 100 miles per hour,” Trotz said. “He’s still capable when he wants to.” BEN RABY (FOR EXPRESS)

PATRICK SMITH (GETTY IMAGES)

NHL Alex Ovechkin’s career was at a crossroads. In the summer, after he scored 33 goals — the second-lowest total for a full season in his career — the Capitals challenged their captain with a harsh assessment. With the NHL trending younger and faster, Ovechkin, 32, was encouraged to focus on speed and conditioning as opposed to brute strength. “He’s going to have to make adjustments to stay relevant in the game,” general manager Brian MacLellan said. For Ovechkin, who joked in a social media comment in January that he puts beer and vodka in his vegetable juice, that meant a more serious approach to the offseason. He returned to Washington to begin workouts for his 13th season a month early. He committed to two-a-day sessions and was frequently seen with his personal trainer toiling on the track at Washington-Lee High School in Arlington. Ovechkin prefers to downplay the uptick in his game, but the results speak for themselves. Entering Thursday, Ovechkin had 23 goals in 35 games. That total was tied for the NHL lead with Lightning winger Nikita Kucherov, who is 24. No player 32 or older has led the NHL in goals at year’s end since Phil Esposito, then 33, did it in 1974-75. Ovechkin’s teammates notice a more active, engaged player. “He’s going out and trying to create stuff as opposed to waiting for others to create things for him,” goaltender Braden Holtby said. “He’s moving more. He’s not just relying on his shot.” Ovechkin’s one-timer from the left faceoff circle is among the game’s most lethal weapons. The blast — most frequently seen on the power play — helped him

League says it did not pressure Panthers to sell The NFL tried to make it clear Thursday it isn’t forcing Panthers owner Jerry Richardson to sell the team while he is investigated for sexual and racial misconduct in the workplace. NFL spokesman Joe Lockhart said the league learned of Richardson’s decision to sell “shortly before the announcement came out.” The NFL plans to hire an outside counsel to investigate the owner and founder of the franchise. While fans are concerned a new owner may move the team, Lockhart said the league’s “first choice is always for franchise stability.” (AP)

‘I, Tonya’ goes for the gold *Movie trailer voice* A long, long time ago in a prehistoric era, one journalist is tasked to do his job without Twitter …

In pursuit of the truth Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks lead ‘The Post,’ Steven Spielberg’s ode to journalism FILM REVIEW In 1971, Katharine Graham had been running The Washington Post Company for eight years, having assumed control when her husband, Philip, took his own life in 1963. Painfully shy and prone to chronic self-doubt, she was an uneasy corporate leader and an unlikely feminist pioneer. Some were skeptical when, a few years earlier, she had hired Newsweek’s Washington bureau chief, Ben Bradlee, to become executive editor of the paper. Although the two enjoyed a warm working relationship, it would be thrown into a crucible in the summer of ’71 with the Post’s publication of the Pentagon Papers after the New York Times, which first broke the story, had been ordered to cease doing so by

a court injunction. That bravado would send The Post into an epic legal and existential battle just as Graham was preparing to take her family’s media company public — a deal that could easily be scuttled by her potential imprisonment and a Supreme Court fight, not to mention the vindictive administration of President Richard M. Nixon. Those tense couple of weeks in June form the spine of “The Post,” a fleet, stirring, thoroughly entertaining movie in which Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks play Graham and Bradlee with just the right balance of modesty and gusto. Directed by Steven Spielberg from a script by Liz Hannah and Josh Singer, “The Post” canters along with crisp pacing, its two icons-playing-icons

‘The Post’ (PG-13, 115 min.) DIRECTOR: Steven Spielberg STARS: Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Sarah Paulson. Bob Odenkirk IN A NUTSHELL: The true story of The Washington Post’s first female publisher teaming with a top editor to expose a big government cover-up spanning more than three decades.

bolstered by a superb cast of supporting players. This includes Sarah Paulson as Bradlee’s thenwife Tony, as well as Bob Odenkirk, playing The Post’s unsung Pentagon Papers hero, assistant managing editor Ben Bagdikian. It’s up to viewers to decide the present-day relevance of a story in which a touchy, overweening

president can be heard going after a newspaper he deems a personal enemy — “The Post” includes snippets from the actual Nixon tapes — or in which a working woman encounters patronizing slights and condescension, only to come into her own with admirable, self-effacing resolve. Unlike the Oscar-winning “Spotlight,” which Singer also co-wrote, “The Post” isn’t a subdued ode to cinematic restraint and shoe-leather reporting. Rather it’s a purposefully rousing homage to the ideals of journalistic independence, governmental accountability and gender equality that isn’t averse to underlining, italicizing and boldfacing why those principles are more important than ever.

20TH CENTURY FOX

(R, 120 min.)

“I, Tonya” revisits — with verve, intelligence, scathing humor and a touch of sadness — the 1994 attack on figure skater Nancy Kerrigan by goons associated with Kerrigan’s rival, Tonya Harding. While Margo Robbie’s take on Harding is a marvel of a disappearing act — with the Australian actress transforming herself beneath crunchy hair spray and the skater’s flat Pacific Northwest accent — it’s Allison Janney who steals the show as LaVona Golden, a mom whose noodging goes well beyond tough love. This film is a funny, sympathetic portrait of a character dismissed as a laughingstock and is surprisingly effective in examining the elusiveness of the truth. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (TWP)

ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

FILM REVIEW

Netflix’s ‘Bright’ is a buddy cop misfire

“Bright,” Netflix’s priciest film to date with a reported $90 million budget, is a labored affair with little stylistic coherence. What the movie — in which a human (Will Smith) and an Orc (Joel Edgerton) are LAPD partners in alternate fantasy reality — has in car chases, over-the-top gangs and dark prophecies, it lacks in originality. Even with Smith being his most charming self, “Bright” is a mess. MARK KENNEDY (AP)

MORE FILMS OPENING THIS WEEK

‘Molly’s Game’ R, 140 min.; out Monday

There is nothing like a big, thrilling opening number. “The Greatest Showman” has that. Also other stuff. The musical is a heavily fictionalized telling of the life of P.T. Barnum (Hugh Jackman), who began as a small-time hustler, founded what would become The Barnum & Bailey Greatest Show on Earth, and presumably did not burst into song and dance at the drop of a top hat. Michelle Williams plays Charity, his long-loved childhood sweetheart and long-suffering supportive wife. So “Showman” is part biopic, part rags-to-riches tale, part love story. Above all else, though, it is an American musical in the most classic sense. We’re talking loud, flashy, big with a capital B and that rhymes with C and that stands for cool. Jackman plays Barnum as

an earnest con man with a half-smile that turns full every time he’s in front of a crowd. Sure, he’s not above padding his “World’s Fattest Man,” but he’s not in the business of selling truth — he’s out to sell fun. If the character is a bit one-note, it’s a pleasant enough note to hear. It’s not just the incorrigible rascal at the heart of the story that puts “Showman” squarely with “Oklahoma” or “The Music Man” (in category, not quality). It’s the utter commitment to the absurd idea of the genre itself: love at first sight,

‘The Greatest Showman’ (PG, 105 min.) DIRECTOR: Michael Gracey STARS: Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron,

Michelle Williams, Zendaya IN A NUTSHELL: An original musical about P.T. Barnum, who rises from nothing to create a spectacle that becomes a worldwide sensation.

Big, not rich: The quieter moments trip up ‘Showman’

success in the face of insurmountable odds, random dance breaks. It is unapologetic in its celebration of heightened emotion; so, like all solid musicals, it inspires emotion in its audience. Most of the time. The music — penned by “La La Land’s” Benj Pasek and Justin Paul — ranges from the catchy, stirring “This Is Me” to … whatever Michelle Williams’ torch song was. (I assume it was not called “Sadly Singing out a Window,” but that’s what it will always be to me.) In the best musicals, the slower numbers — “Sunrise, Sunset” from “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Hello Young Lovers” from “The King and I” — deepen the audience’s understanding of the characters, lending shading and color as they move through the plot. In “Showman,” that’s sorely lacking, so we care less about the people on the screen. We just want them to get back to show business. The film tries to hark back to the days of the blockbuster musical, when “West Side Story” and “The Sound of Music” reigned supreme, but can’t quite hit the notes or nail the steps. When it is big, it is very, very big — and when it is small, it is boring.

‘Downsizing’ R, 135 min.; out Friday

The weird and wonderful “Downsizing” takes place in an indeterminate future, a decade after researchers found a method of “cellular reduction” that can shrink humans to the size of Barbie dolls, thereby dramatically staving off their ruinous impact on the globe’s resources. This wildly imaginative flight of fancy, starring Matt Damon as an Everyman named Paul, strikes a balance between whimsy, screwball comedy, social satire and meditation on the foibles and high aspirations of human nature. 20TH CENTURY FOX

P.T. Barnum (Hugh Jackman) knew how to put on a show.

The screenwriter Aaron Sorkin makes his directorial debut with “Molly’s Game,” and it’s a promising one at that. Swift and stylish, this engaging fact-based drama, about Molly Bloom, who at one point ran the richest poker game in the world, is worth seeing if only to watch its star, Jessica Chastain, at the top of her most icily self-controlled game. Despite its weak conclusion, “Molly’s Game” pays off, both as slick, adult-oriented entertainment and a morality tale. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘Pitch Perfect 3’ PG-13, 93 min.; out Friday

What was fresh and frisky in the first “Pitch Perfect” as the Bellas — a college crew of female a cappella singers — found their groove is now, in this third installment, an off-key dismantling of what made the concept so good. Even Anna Kendrick, whose dynamo once pushed the Bellas, sleepwalks through this go-round. The lone spirit-lifting musical number — of George Michael’s “Freedom! ’90” — comes late in the film, and by that time, you’ll be ready to seek freedom in the lobby. SUSAN WLOSZCZYNA (TWP)

SUMMARY: An all-girl group of con artists is out to rob Anne Hathaway. Well, the starlet Anne Hathaway plays, who seems to be a lot like Anne Hathaway. The “Ocean’s Eleven” spinoff proves that women will not be satisfied until we have a womenonly reboot of every movie ever made. We discuss it at our secret meetings. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

SUMMARY: Based on the ballet, this is a story of a girl who gets a nutcracker for Christmas and instead of being all “seriously? I would rather have socks and underwear what even is this I don’t even like nuts that much,” discovers a magical world that is DEFINITELY not a rip-off of Narnia. K.P.K.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

One of the photos is a black-and-white portrait of the couple embracing, another is a more formal picture of the two sitting together holding hands, and a third shows them walking around the grounds. The couple, who announced their engagement last month, will be married May 19. (EXPRESS)
