For Troops, Muted Homecomings No mass celebrations planned for returning Iraq War veterans
8WYaijeho
Americans probably won’t be seeing a huge ticker-tape parade anytime soon for troops returning from Iraq, and it’s not clear if veterans of the nine-year campaign will ever enjoy the grand, f lag-waving, red-white-and-blue homecoming that the nation’s fighting men and women received after World War II and the Gulf War. Officials in New York and Washington say they would be happy to help stage a big celebration, but Pentagon officials say they haven’t been asked to plan one. Most welcome-homes have been smaller-scale: hugs from families at military posts across the country, a somber commemoration by President Obama at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. With tens of thousands of U.S. troops still fighting a bloody war in Afghanistan, anything that looks like a big victory celebration could

Two New York City councilmen, Republicans Vincent Ignizio and James Oddo, have called for a tickertape parade down the stretch of Broadway known as the Canyon of Heroes. The benchmarks for celebrating troop homecomings were clearer in previous wars. After World War II, parades marked Japan’s surrender. After the Gulf War, celebrations marked the troops’ return after Iraqi forces were driven out of Kuwait. The only mass celebrations of U.S. military activities since Sept. 11, 2001, were largely spontaneous: Large crowds gathered in Times Square and outside the White House in April after Osama bin Laden was killed. and we’ll be doing that.” Ignizio said he had been told by the mayor’s office that Pentagon officials were concerned that a celebration could spark violence overseas and were evaluating the risk. The last combat troops in Iraq pulled out more than a week ago. About 91,000 U.S. soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines are in Afghanistan. Many U.S. troops who fought in the Iraq War could end up being sent to Afghanistan. BEN NUCKOLS AND SAMANTHA GROSS (AP)

In Iowa, Head May Trump Heart CWied 9_jo" ?emW Iowa Republicans may be starting to choose with their heads rather than their hearts as the Jan. 3 caucuses approach. The ascent of libertarian-leaning Ron Paul and the lack of an ideologically pure consensus conservative seem to be awakening a new sense of pragmatism in some Iowa Republicans. That bodes well for Mitt Romney, as a large chunk of undecided voters continues the search for someone capable of defeating President Obama. “A lot of the people I’m around are not Romney fans, but they are kind of acknowledging they think he’s going to be the nominee, and that they’ll plug their nose and vote for him,” said Gwen Ecklund, Republican chairwoman in GOPheavy Crawford County in conservative western Iowa. A week before voting begins in the fluid Republican race, interviews with a dozen Iowa political operatives and party activists —

Starting in 2012, the government will charge a new fee to your health insurance plan for research to find out which drugs, medical procedures, tests and treatments work best. The goal of the research, part of a little-known provision of President Obama’s health care law, is to answer such basic questions as whether that new prescription drug advertised on TV really works better than an old generic. But in the politically charged environment surrounding health care, the idea of medical effectiveness research is eyed with suspicion. The insurance fee could be

Nebraska Sen. Nelson Won’t Seek Re-election MWi^_d]jed Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb., announced Tuesday he will not seek re-election, leaving his seat as a strong pickup opportunity for the GOP in the 2012 election. Nelson, 70, said in an online video that he wants to spend more time with his family and look for other ways to serve. “Therefore, I am announcing today that I will not seek re-election,” he said. “Simply put: It is time to move on.” The national Democratic Party had spent more than $1 million in advertising this year driving up Nelson’s personal approval rating, perhaps in hopes of convincing him that he could win in a dark red state. But Republican-aligned groups also spent heavily trying to define the moderate Democrat as an enabler of President Obama, particularly because Nelson voted for Obama’s health care bill. His re-election race was expected to be an uphill battle either way, but there also remain questions about the strength of the GOP

At the same time, Kerrey said recently that it is “highly unlikely” he would replace Nelson on the ballot. A ARON BL AKE

Syria Churns as Monitors Arrive Bloodshed continues as protesters fill city after tanks fall back 8[_hkj Tens of thousands of defiant Syrian protesters thronged the streets of Homs on Tuesday, calling for the execution of President Bashar Assad shortly after his army pulled its tanks back and allowed Arab League monitors in for the first time to the city at the heart of the anti-government uprising. The pullback was the first sign the regime was complying with the League’s plan to end the ninemonth crackdown on dissent. Yet amateur video released by

Syrian tanks had been heavily shelling Homs for days, residents and activists said, killing dozens even after Assad signed on to the Arab League plan, which demands the government remove its forces from city streets, start talks with opposition leaders and allow rights workers and journalists into the country. About 60 monitors arrived in Syria on Monday, the first foreign observers Syria has allowed in since March, when the uprising against Assad’s rule began. Amateur videos show residents of Homs pleading with the visiting monitors for protection. “We are unarmed people who are dying,” a resident shouts to one observer. 9W_he An Egyptian court on Tuesday banned virginity tests on female detainees in military-controlled prisons, buoying human rights groups, who said the civilian court’s ruling was binding on the country’s military leaders. The ban came in response to a lawsuit filed by Samira Ibrahim, 25, one of seven women who said they were subjected to humiliating virginity checks after being detained by the military at a sitin in March. At the time, the ruling generals denied that soldiers had conducted such tests. A general was later quoted as saying that tests had been carried out to protect soldiers from accusations of rape. Last week, the mili-
8WYaijeho$$$ Samira Ibrahim, 25, has been one of the most outspoken about her experience and the most dogged about holding someone accountable. The young woman posted a video on YouTube in which she said that after she was detained March 9, she was electrocuted with cattle prods, accused of being a prostitute, forced to strip in front of soldiers and then examined by a man in front of laughing soldiers. The military doctor who conducted the test will face a hearing in a military court Jan. 3, according to state television. (AP)
tary announced investigations into the incidents. The generals’ management of the country’s transition period has drawn intense criticism, but the reports of mistreatment of women by the military have incensed Egyptians. In recent crackdowns on protesters, soldiers were filmed beating women and in at least one case partly stripping off a woman’s clothing.
The court’s prohibition of the practice Tuesday represents a significant victory for women, rights groups and legal experts said. Still, Gen. Adel el-Mursi, the head of the militar y judicial authority, said the ruling could not be applied because the military does not conduct forcible virginity tests, according to the state news agency MENA. A Big Pig Problem in Islamabad Roaming boars pose a growing challenge for Pakistan’s capital ?ibWcWXWZ" FWa_ijWd

Ever y w inter, t he capit a l of Pakistan’s Islamic republic is overrun by what is many Muslims’ worst nightmare: screeching wild pigs. Mot ivated by hunger, t he anima ls descend each night from nearby hills to feed on the garbage bins of Islamabad’s most exclusive addresses, including high-end hotels and the president’s residence. On their way to feeding grounds, pigs cause traffic accidents and send locals hurrying for cover. Some Islamabad residents have reportedly been injured or even killed by belligerent hogs. Over the years, Islamabad’s Capital Development Authority has tried to stem the flow of swine through trapping and poisoning,
De ;Wio <_n Islamabad’s wild pigs have virtually no predator with the exception of the occasional leopard or poacher. Officials have resorted to mass killings in the past, but dealing with a burgeoning pig population in an urban environment is difficult: Shooting is not an option, and poisoning has seen limited success. Islam considers pigs dirty and unfit for human consumption. Potential bodily harm to residents remains the main concern with the roaming boars. Adult males can grow to 200 pounds and are equipped with protruding tusks. (T WP)
and up until last year it awarded hunting licenses. Still, the local porcine population has continued to rise. Now officials have all but given up trying to contain the intruders. Islamabad is crisscrossed with wooded ravines offering cover not only to wild pigs but also to monkeys, jackals and giant fruit bats. Known to most Pakistanis simply as pigs but to scientists as Eurasian wild boars, the animals
are natural residents of Pakistan’s plains and hills. They generally feed on anything from grass and roots to small animals, but Islamabad’s boars appear to prefer trash. Shahid Hafeez, a lecturer at the University of Agriculture in Faisalabad, found that though dead pigs’ stomachs contained plants, dead animals and mud, 58 percent of the contents was garbage, including plastic bags and diapers. In recent weeks, Occupy protesters tried to block people from leaving a conservative conference at the Walter E. Activists Test Gray The mayor’s past as a protester has him conflicted over Occupy D.C. MWi^_d]jed In a city whose local government emerged out of decades of protest, D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray fits right in. The 69-year-old Democrat has walked picket lines, marched down Pennsylvania Avenue, organized mass vigils and put his body on the line for a cause, most recently when he was arrested in April during a demonstration against Congress. Gray said his life has been defined by his work “on behalf of people who are perceived as the underdog,” from leading the fight to desegregate George Washington University’s fraternity system to a four-decade career in human services. But like numerous big-city may-
ors, Gray’s tolerance for activism is being tested by protesters affiliated with the Occupy Wall Street movement, which shows little sign of retreating in the District. Gray is generally supportive of the cause, but he says he is bewildered by how the movement has ended up known as much for its tents as for its demands. “What is frustrating for me, and I think of my own causes, is, what is the desired outcome here?” Gray said. “Where are you trying to get to?”
With Occupy D.C. about to enter its fourth month, Gray is struggling to balance his embrace of protest as a tool for social change and his obligation to run a city where demonstrations present a near-daily challenge to local officials. “You don’t want to be a hypocrite,” said Gray, a fierce partisan who last year used a derogatory pun to refer to tea party members and who was initially intrigued by Occupy’s young, liberal protesters. The mayor’s evolving view of
the Occupy camps in Freedom Plaza and McPherson Square offer a window into not only his leadership style and political upbringing, but also the challenges protesters face in winning converts to their campaign to reduce income inequality and the inf luence of corporations. Gray’s struggle puts him in the company of activist mayors in Los Angeles, Atlanta, Richmond and Oakland, Calif., who in many cases got their start in politics after championing a cause, only to find
themselves pitted against a new generation of political anger. With both Occupy D.C. camps on National Park Service property, Gray doesn’t face the same stress as some of his counterparts in deciding whether to order police to dislodge the encampments. But D.C. police must monitor the sites and track protest marches, responsibilities that Gray said are straining some city resources and piling up police overtime. For now, Gray remains conflicted. “We want to support the movement, but we are not going to tolerate breaking of the law,” said Gray, who said he cannot quite define acceptable civil disobedience but thinks Occupy protesters have gone too far. At the start of his physical therapy, Robinson had a bit of an attitude. He didn’t want to do exercises, a reaction typical sometimes of patients who have lost limbs or been in a tragic accident. But as he started to see progress, Robinson became more upbeat, outgoing and like the Victor his family and friends had known. In October, Robinson left the hospital for a day to attend Quality Trust’s annual meeting. He received a standing ovation when he entered the ballroom at Gallaudet University. “I’m back on track,” he told well-wishers. He also plans to keep using Metro’s trains to get around town. “I’m not upset about losing my foot,” he said. “I’m happy I’m getting a new one.” DANA HEDGPETH (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Taylor Gourmet to Open 14th Street Store in 2012 Local chain Taylor Gourmet will open its fourth location, at 1910 14th St. NW, next Tuesday. Fresh off doling out free sammies to celebrate its first anniversary at its Bethesda location, Taylor Gourmet broke the news on Twitter Tuesday. Meanwhile, cheese steak fans are still left in the lurch: Taylor Charles Steak & Ice isn’t expected to open its H Street NE location until April.
Jason Feldman’s Star and Shamrock, a Jewish-Irish tavern in Washington’s H Street corridor, has to be the only bar in the District where battery-operated menorahs are on each table, fried matzoh balls are served with He’Brew drafts and Hanukkah has been proclaimed hip. “My bubby would be proud,” said Feldman, using the Yiddish word for grandmother.
On the first night of the eightday Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, Feldman, 37, was wearing a backward Mets cap and eating a hot pastrami on rye at a carved wooden bar. Feldman is the grandson of Holocaust survivors, “but I was born in Brooklyn, raised in Jersey and my father is now in Boca,” he laughs. He moved to Washington in 1999 and worked as a bartender for several years. With the opening of his own bar, Feldman has become Washington’s best-known Heebster — a contraction of Hebrew hipster. Some Washington residents are pushing a new site for a possible national World War I memorial. The Association of the Oldest Inhabitants of the District of Columbia is suggesting Pershing Park on Pennsylvania Avenue as a memorial site. Members are concerned about the possibility of D.C.’s World War I memorial being co-opted as a national memorial. The war is the only major 20thcentury conflict that doesn’t have a memorial in Washington. There is a memorial on the National Mall to D.C. residents who fought, and a bill before Congress seeks to designate the memorial as a national memorial. (AP)

Hoyas guard Jason Clark (21) drives to the basket against Memphis on Dec. 22 at Verizon Center in D.C. Clark is one of two seniors on the team; the other is center Henry Sims.
De <[Wh =e_d] <ehmWhZ Ahead of Big East play, Hoyas have gelled into a solid unit with roles everyone understands C[dÊi >eoWi >eefi At the start of the season, no one knew what to expect from this year’s young Hoyas team. Now, as No. 12 Georgetown (10-1) begins conference play with a game against Louisville on Wednesday, everyone expects the team to just keep doing what it’s been doing: winning. “I think everyone knows what’s expected of them,” coach John Thompson III said, alluding to the Big East battles ahead. “They know they have to perform and everyone is comfortable. We have a group right now I think that really believes in what we’re doing and how we’re doing it and that’s a good thing.” For a team with so many young players, the Hoyas have shown a surprising consistency no matter
who is on the floor — something they hope to take into conference play. Thompson is proud there haven’t been “big ebbs and flows” during the team’s games. Senior Jason Clark has done his part to inspire the team’s young players, scoring his 1,000th career point in Georgetown’s game against IUPUI on Nov. 28. Making splashes of their own are junior Hollis Thompson (averaging 14.9 points, 6.1 rebounds per game) and senior Henry Sims (12.5 points, 5.5 rebounds per game). But Georgetown’s veterans are not the only ones making a mark for the Hoyas. The freshmen have played a lot of minutes, especially in games in which Georgetown was ahead by
more than 20 points. (Georgetown ended six of 11 games with a plus20 margin.) Mikael Hopkins and Jabril Trawick have gotten decent playing time, but the star freshmen have been Otto Porter and Greg Whittington. Porter is averaging 26.8 minutes (more than starters Sims and Markel Starks) in 11 games, and he is second on the team in rebounds. Thompson said from the beginning of the season that the freshmen would get reps simply because they would have to. They’ll be even more necessary in conference play, and seeing the team’s production level remain steady once the freshman hit the floor has been encouraging. “There is very little dropoff,” Thompson said.
The coach has resisted calling timeouts during games in order to allow his floor generals to call orders — “Who’s going to step up, who’s going to talk, who’s going to try and make adjustments on their own?” Thompson says — because that experience making in-game adjustments will come in handy during Big East play. Clark said his teammates push each other at practice, and that, too, has led to better communication during games. “Nobody on this team is afraid; the young guys go at the older guys,” the senior said. “The older guys go back to the young guys. I don’t think anybody is afraid of anybody. When we step off that court, we’re still a team.” KRYSTINA LUCIDO

Back in the Game Terps try to find their identity with 7-footer returning to lineup J[hfi C[dÊi >eefi Three games. The Maryland Terrapins get all of three games with their full roster intact and on the court before
the arrival of ACC play. During these three games in seven days — against Albany, Samford and Cornell — the Terrapins (7-3) must find a rotation, a rhythm and a chemistry. They welcomed sophomore point guard Pe’Shon Howard back from a broken foot last Friday and the result was a disjointed, reckless affair in which Maryland flirted
with becoming the only team in 10 games to be bested by the Radford Highlanders. Seven-foot-one Russian freshman Alex Len debuts against Albany on Wednesday, having served his 10-game suspension for violating the NCAA’s amateurism rules. “It’s like we’re starting over,” first-year coach Mark Turgeon said Friday. “It’s a guessing game.”
Though Howard has been injured, most of the players shared the court with him last year and have a feel for his style of play. Learning Len’s game will be a revelation. He’s been practicing with the team since the NCAA announced his suspension, but how he’ll be integrated into the game-day schemes and how he’ll react to the college game won’t be known until the sneakers hit the floor. Turgeon insisted before the season that Len was not a “savior,” but the team will nonetheless
Maryland has lacked a recognizable identity this season. The introduction of Len provides depth in the low post and a complement to incumbent big men James Padgett and Ashton Pankey. “As a coach, you’ve got to play the best players,” Turgeon said. “I’m just trying to figure it all out.” Can Howard’s presence temper and focus Stoglin? If not a savior, can Len at least be an occasional game-changer? Maryland has three games to find out. DEREK TURNER

Saints’ QB Drew Brees (9) poses with his offensive line after Monday’s 45-16 victory.
For Brees, Record Is All About Team Saints’ QB credits his squad after setting NFL passing mark Fhe <eejXWbb After Drew Brees broke an NFL passing record that stood for nearly three decades, his teammates called on him to make a speech in the Saints’ locker room. “This record isn’t about one person. There might be just one name that goes in ledger under the record, but it’s really about the team,” Brees told his teammates. “I want everyone to feel a huge part of this, that this record would not have been possible without them.” Brees set the NFL mark for yards passing in a season, breaking a record Dan Marino held for 27 years, and New Orleans wrapped up the NFC South title with a 45-16 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Monday night.
)&A
Brees nearly topped Marino three years ago, finishing with 5,069 yards passing. But that pursuit rang a little hollow because the Saints were 8-8. This time, Brees’ prolific passing has led New Orleans (12-3) to the playoffs and a legitimate shot at the Super Bowl. “We all want this [record] very badly,” Brees began, “but it’s all about winning and we know if we just focus on that, all that other stuff will take care of itself.” Brees threw for 307 yards and four touchdowns, the last a 9-yard strike to Darren Sproles that set the record with 2:51 to go. It was Brees’ final pass of the game and it gave him 5,087 yards passing — with one game left. Marino finished with 5,084 yards for the Miami Dolphins in 1984. Minutes after Brees broke the record, Marino offered congratulations on Twitter. “Great job by such a special player,” Marino wrote. (AP)

Dylan McDermott confronts Rubber Man in “American Horror Story.”
Louis C.K. was already my favorite thing about comedy in 2011. Had there been any doubt, though, Dec. 10 would have settled it. That Saturday, he started selling his fourth stand-up special, “Live at the Beacon Theater,” himself, for $5, at Louisck.net. As of Dec. 21, C.K. said he’d grossed more than a million dollars from the experiment. He’s keeping $220,000 for himself; the rest is going to expenses, charity and bonuses 8o HkZ_ for his staff. If he =h[[dX[h] makes another million, he’ll donate more. C.K., 44, has the rare show-business career that took off later in life. He’s been a stand-up and a TV writer since his 20s, but only recently has the general public caught on. C.K.’s humor is raw and honest, with a touch of absurdity. He can cut through the world’s crap like a great satirist, make you cry during an emotional USO tour on FX’s “Louie,” and remain likable when admitting he wants to beat up one of his daughter’s first-grade classmates. Yet he has the self-awareness to know the laughs could stop anytime. “I’ve got a year left, then I’m back to being just like you,” C.K. says in his special. “But for now, yeah, it’s pretty good.” Read Rudi’s previous columns at: expressnightout.com

I[h_Wb J^h_bb[h FX’s ‘American Horror Story’ is an original addition to a genre haunted by cliches JL Producing and sustaining a horror show for the American television audience is not a mission for the squeamish. Over television’s 60-some years, very few continuing horror series have truly taken hold in this country. “Dark Shadows” survived five years in the 1960s by blending camp and soap opera. Joss Whe-
don succeeded by making “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” into a “Beverly Hills, 90210” of the undead. “True Blood” pins its allure on sex. Then there’s “American Horror Story,” the brainchild of “Glee” creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, which finished its addictively off-kilter first season last week on FX. Against every single odd, this haunted-Hollywood saga managed to take all the horror cliches in the book and spin a thought-provoking stew of compelling originality. The show’s first season documented the travails of the Harmon family in a 1908 mansion known as the “Murder House” for all the bad

Finished Business “American Horror Story” creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk revealed last week that they’d planned all along to end the saga of the Harmons and their L.A. house with the season finale. Next season, they’ll move on to an entirely different tale. “Just like this year, every season of the show will have a beginning, a middle and an end,” Murphy said. (AP/E XPRESS)
things that happened there. Pretty much everything you’ve seen in every horror show rears its head here. There’s the child’s ball that rolls into the scene, the blankeyed twins from beyond the grave, and the magnificently undulating Steadicam work. Yet, “American Horror Story” works brilliantly. Here, the living seem kind of dull but there’s major character development among the dead. The house that belonged to Ben and Vivien Harmon and their daughter Violet (Dylan McDermott, Connie Britton and Taissa Farmiga) is not a single-family dwelling. It is occupied by the people who have lived there — and died there — over the decades. Ultimately, “American Horror Story” is a fresh take on the tale of the immigrant experience. Death is the undiscovered country of destination, the place where people must build their world anew. It took the entire first season, but this much about the show has become clear: Dying is a starting point for exploring the human condition. TED ANTHONY (AP)
8_]#IYh[[d 8bk[i0 Movie attendance in 2011 was likely at its lowest level in more than a decade, according to Hollywood.com. Paul Dergarabedian, president of Hollywood.com’s box-office division, predicted 1.269 billion tickets will have been sold for the year — the smallest annual total since 1.264 billion were purchased in 1995, he said. Studio scheduling issues contributed to the decline, along with other media that vied for moviegoer attention, he said. (BLOOMBERG NEWS)

Celebs release their own lines of pricey, high-tech headphones Cki_Y When iPods hit the scene 10 years ago, the small, white ear buds that came with the devices became the symbol for listening to music on the go. Today, that’s changing. More and more people are expressing themselves with pricey headphones, with some fashion-forward music lovers rocking updat-
tin Bieber, Diddy, Daft Punk, Nick Cannon and LeBron James. This year, 50 Cent, Quincy Jones and Ludacris released their own line of headphones. Dre says he is offended when he sees people using generic headphones. “It’s almost like a knife in the heart,” he said while promoting the headphones last year. “We’re in the studio, at least me, for years at a time trying to work on music, tweaking it, trying to get the sound right.” But some people may

Bose has been known for its larger headphones in recent years, and now celebrities have taken note and aided in the resurgence of the ear amplifiers. In 2008, Monster launched Beats by Dre with Dr. Dre, and it is the most recognizable of celebrity-branded headphones. Monster later released headphones with Lady Gaga, Jus-

The cheapest set costs $100; the most expensive pair is $500. “You go out and spend three, four hundred dollars on an iPod, and then you go put your earphones in and your iPod sounds like crap,” said Jimmy Iovine, chairman of Interscope, A&M and Geffen Records and co-launcher of Beats by Dre. Monster’s CEO
Noel Lee took it a step further: “Most people have never heard what their iPod sounds like.” 50 Cent says the celebrit y attachment to headphones helps give the product an identity. “The generic public is responding to products associated with living people. When you say Bose or Sony, I think of buildings. It’s a corporation, it’s not a person associated with it that has respect within hip-hop culture or pop culture,” he said. MESFIN FEK ADU (AP)

Bon Iver, the Grammy-nominated band from western Wisconsin, will appear in a fitness DVD. Personal trainer Jeff Rogers met frontman Justin Vernon several years ago while playing basketball at an Eau Claire YMCA. Noticing "something wasn't right," the personal trainer discovered the singer was suffering from sciatica. Rogers offered to show Vernon workouts to strengthen his lower back. Eventually the entire band joined in, taking Rogers' workouts on tour. Rogers will put an "On the Road” DVD, which features the band and one of their songs, early next year. (AP)

Games We Play The Winter Games at Dumbarton House are hardly athletically strenuous — no hockey, no curling, no iceketball. Instead, you’ll be sitting inside with warm drinks, cookies and old-timey games like whist, marbles and skittles. (Not the candy.) Presiding over the event are “historic dance mistresses” Jackie Geschickter and Pat Sowers, who often teach at Dumbarton. Dumbarton House, 2715 Q Street NW; 10 a.m., $5-$10; Dumbartonhouse.org.
Rock Hashanah Any unusual crossover act has a period in which it’s enough to just be a novelty. Matisyahu, Hasidic rapper, has long passed that point and coasted into the period in which his music has to be legitimately excellent to attract an audience. Good thing it is. His reggae-inflected rap style mixes traditional Jewish sounds with modern music. 9:30 Club, 815 V St. NW; 7 p.m., sold out; 202-2650930, 930.com. (U St.-Cardozo)

“This transition into the world of bicycle commuters was a combination of luck, research, inspiration and encouragement. My small payback so far has been to coordinate a bike and pedestrian safety program at our local elementary school. I’m almost beyond being a newbie among bicycle commuters. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You are likely to have more time available to you than you expected — but you mustn’t think you can use it for recreation. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) It’s a good time for squaring away those big plans and doing what is necessary to get things moving in the right direction. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) The unknown is likely to figure prominently throughout the day — and yet you will be able to have the advantage in time to use it well. ARIES (March 21-April 19) Collaborating with those who share your aspirations and methods can be quite profitable — and enjoyable, too. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You’re going to have to say most things more than once in order for the messages your words contain to be received.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Some aspects of the natural order or things may confuse you, as you recognize that not everything is as it should be. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You may feel as though you have some very big shoes to fill, and yet you should be able to exceed expectations in every way.
