When words become art SILVER SPRING For this group of committed doodlers, it’s pens before pixels. The Unofficial Hand Lettering Society of Silver Spring gathers monthly in this Maryland suburb, setting aside keyboards to put ink to paper and shape the written word into works of art. That can mean drawing elaborate letter shapes in spiral notebooks — “Lettering is freedom,” say, with bold black brushstrokes — or practicing a Christmas greeting in green ink. Graphic designer Christy Batta says she and Amina Ahmad, a candlemaker, started the group in 2015 after Batta designed a handmade logo for Ahmad’s business. What started as an informal monthly meetup for the two to practice hand lettering became the society, with its complicated but tongue-in-cheek name. The group usually attracts a dozen or more people to its

meetings, held at various coffee shops and businesses. Gatherings are advertised online, but the society also gets the word out by posting — what else — handlettered sheets on coffeehouse bulletin boards. There’s no pressure to create a polished work of art or even a finished project. The goal is just to try. “I feel like everyone can do it,” Ahmad says. “I always tell people, if you have a hand and you can write, you can hand-letter.” Batta says hand lettering offers something more than just a message — “a certain kind of warmth and human quality that I could get from drawing letters that you couldn’t get from the computer.” That’s echoed by Denise Bosler, a typography professor at Kutztown University in Pennsylvania, who says hand lettering “truly is illustration” and has drawn more interest from her students in recent years. Maggie Chang, a nurse from Rockville, began coming to society meetings this year. Chang uses hand lettering

Trash lines the National Mall on Monday not long after the start of the partial federal shutdown.

Mayor: There are no winners Bowser urges Trump to end the shutdown as D.C. pays heavy toll THE DISTRICT D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser is urging President Trump to work with Congress to end the partial federal government shutdown, saying the indefinite closure hurts the city’s residents and businesses. “During a shutdown, there are no winners and our nation’s federal workers, including the 170,000 federal employees who work in Washington, DC, pay the highest price,” Bowser wrote in a letter Wednesday. The mayor also reiterated that the city would step in to provide services, such as removing trash from the Mall and other federal parks in the District. The extra trash removal costs $46,000 a week, Bowser said.

The city is also handling an influx of unemployment benefit claims that are common during government shutdowns because workers are not guaranteed back pay (which Congress has approved after prior shutdowns) and because contractors and others are also losing income. The District Department of Employment Services, which administers unemployment benefits for city residents, has received 205 claims since the shutdown began and expects that number to spike next week after pending paychecks are paid out. Although the D.C. government’s budget is tied to the federal budget, it can continue operating during shutdowns. But the city isn’t immune to the ripple effects of shutdowns, such as federal government workers spending less at local stores. Roughly 800,000 workers

The president has demanded $5 billion in funding for a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, but the proposal lacks support in Congress, and no agreement is in sight. control of the chamber Jan. 3. As the shutdown entered Day 6 on Thursday, Trump claimed that most people who are losing pay in the shutdown are Democrats, days after claiming that many workers losing pay urged him to continue the shutdown to secure funding for a border wall. Bowser wrapped up her letter with a reminder that D.C. has no voting representation in Congress despite having more residents than Vermont and Wyoming. “We hope that this key message will resonate during this shutdown: the 702,000 residents of Washington, DC, who pay the highest taxes per capita to the federal treasury, are stepping up to cover federal services during the shutdown, while we are the only citizens within the continental United States without a vote in Congress,” the mayor wrote. nation+world Visit by Trump offends some Iraqi lawmakers, who want troops to go BAGHDAD Iraqi lawmakers on Thursday demanded U.S. forces leave the country after a surprise visit by President Trump that politicians denounced as arrogant and a violation of national sovereignty. Trump’s trip to see U.S. service members at al-Asad Airbase in western Iraq on Wednesday was unannounced and the subject of tight security, which is routine for presidential visits to conflict regions. But it came at a time when containing foreign influence has become a hotbutton issue in Iraqi politics, and

it provoked vociferous backlash. Iraqi lawmakers were smarting after Trump left three hours after he arrived without meeting any officials, drawing comparisons to the occupation of Iraq after the 2003 invasion. “Trump needs to know his limits. The American occupation of Iraq is over,” said Sabah al-Saidi, the head of one of two main blocs in Iraq’s parliament. “Arrogant” and “a violation of national sovereignty” were other examples of the reaction from lawmakers. Trump spoke by phone with Prime Minister Adel AbdulMahdi after a “difference in points of view” over arrangements led to the cancellation of a face-to-face meeting, according to the prime minister’s office.

A message to U.S.: Get out

President Trump smiles for a photo Wednesday during his visit to U.S. troops in Iraq.

The visit could have unintended consequences for American policy, with officials from both sides of Iraq’s political divide

calling for a vote in Parliament to expel U.S. forces. The president, who kept to the U.S. air base 60 miles west of Baghdad, said he had no plans to withdraw the 5,200 troops in the country. He said an Iraqi base could be used for U.S. air strikes inside Syria following his announcement last week to withdraw U.S. troops from there. The suggestion ran counter to current sentiment in Iraqi politics, which favors staying above the fray in regional conflicts. “Iraq should not be a platform for the Americans to settle their accounts with either the Russians or the Iranians in the region,” said Hakim al-Zamili, a senior lawmaker in al-Saidi’s Islah bloc in Parliament. RUSSIA Russia on Wednesday conducted a final test of a nuclear-capable glider that flies at 20 times the speed of sound, President Vladimir Putin said, adding that the weapon will be included in the country’s arsenal next year. “Russia now has a new kind of strategic weapon,” Putin said. He described the successful test, in which the glider was launched from a site in southwestern Russia toward a target on the Kamchatka Peninsula more than 3,500 miles away, as a “wonderful, perfect New Year’s gift for the country.” The fanfare surrounding the test — it led the TV news, and state media reported that Putin gave the launch order — underscores how central nuclear saber-rattling has become to the Kremlin’s effort to depict Russia as a global superpower. The new weapon, dubbed the Avangard, is of a type that the Pentagon has been both working on and worrying about as an arms race emerges among the United States, Russia and China for missiles that can maneuver easily and travel far faster than the speed of sound. There was no immediate independent confirmation of the test. The U.S. is also working on hypersonic missiles, although U.S. officials have warned that the efforts lag behind those of potential adversaries. ‘We have not been able to reach agreement’

SPACE

A far-out NASA New Year’s reception

WASHINGTON Washington all but gave up Thursday on resolving the partial government shutdown before the new year, as lawmakers were told not to expect votes this week and signs of negotiations were nonexistent. On Capitol Hill, the hallways were quiet and leadership offices were shuttered. At the White House, President Trump retreated from public view and tweeted recriminations at Democrats for blocking funding for his border wall. Behind the scenes, Democratic aides worked to draft legislation to reopen the government once they take over the House on Jan. 3. It was Day 6 of the third partial government shutdown of the year, and, barring a surprise resolution, it will become the second-longest of the decade when Congress convenes next week to open its 116th session. “We have not been able to reach agreement, with regards to the leadership on both sides,” Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., said after presiding over a pro forma session in the Senate that lasted four minutes. The standoff over Trump’s demands for funding for his border wall left some 25 percent of

the government without funding and hundreds of thousands of government workers stranded at home, facing the possibility that they will miss paychecks if the situation continues. During a pro forma session in the House, Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass., sought recognition to get a vote on legislation to reopen the government. He was denied. The Senate will not return for legislative session until the afternoon of Jan. 2. That allows one last window to reopen the government before Democrats take control. About a quarter of the federal government has been shut down since Saturday, with roughly 800,000 workers affected, including an estimated 350,000

who are on furlough at home without pay. At the heart of the stalemate is Trump’s demand for $5 billion in funding for his proposed wall on the U.S.Mexico border. Democrats have rejected that figure and made counteroffers of as much as $1.6 billion for border security, but not for a new wall. Trump on Thursday blamed Democratic “OBSTRUCTION of the desperately needed Wall.” According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released Thursday, 47 percent of adults hold Trump responsible for the shutdown, while 33 percent blame Democrats in Congress, and 7 percent blame congressional Republicans. The toll of lockdowns

MaKenzie Woody, 6: Three times between September and November, gunfire near MaKenzie’s public charter elementary school led DC Prep to seal off its Southeast Washington campus and sequester its students. She has become wary of recess on the playground. “I don’t want to be outside because what if someone was shooting … and everybody got hurt?”

Ajani Dartiguenave, 12: In October, Ajani heard on the radio that a student at a nearby high school had been gunned down in a hallway. Eleven days later, Ajani’s school was locked down due to an anonymous threat. Recalling the recent shooting, the seventh-grader started writing a letter to his mom. “I am scared to death,” he wrote. “I will miss you.”

frightening circumstances, such as those that trigger school lockdowns, are at risk for lasting symptoms,” he said. “These include everything from worsening academic and social progression to depression, anxiety, poor sleep, post-traumatic symptomatology and substance abuse.” The possibility of imminent danger, however small, poses a complex challenge for school administrators, who must sometimes make critical decisions within seconds. “We have to take every threat seriously” is a

All states are affected School systems in every state and the District had several lockdowns last school year, The Post’s analysis found. While various threats accounted for 15 percent of lockdowns and police manhunts near campuses made up a similar share, at least 61 percent were related to firearms. And on every school day between Labor Day in September 2017 and Memorial Day in May 2018, a campus in this country went into lockdown because of a shooting or the perceived danger of one. (TWP)

EDUCATION School shootings remain rare, even after 2018, a year of historic carnage on K-12 campuses. What’s not rare are lockdowns, which have become a hallmark of American education and a byproduct of this country’s inability to curb its gun violence epidemic. Lockdowns save lives during real attacks, but even when there is no gunman stalking the hallways, the procedures can inflict immense psychological damage on children convinced that they’re in danger. And the number of kids who have experienced these ordeals is extraordinary. More than 4.1 million students endured at least one lockdown in the 2017-18 school year alone, according to a first-of-its-kind analysis by The Washington Post that included a review of 20,000 news stories and data from school districts in 31 of the country’s largest cities. The total figure is likely much higher because many school districts — including in Detroit and Chicago — do not track them and hundreds never make the news, particularly when they happen at urban schools attended primarily by children of color. Still, on a typical day last school year, at least 16 campuses locked down, with nine related to gun violence or the threat of it. The Post’s final tally of lockdowns exceeded 6,200. While most kids won’t suffer long-term consequences, experts who specialize in childhood trauma suspect that a meaningful percentage will. “This is a clear and pressing public health issue,” said Steven Schlozman, a child psychiatrist and assistant professor at Harvard Medical School, after learning of The Post’s findings, which he called “staggering.” “We have very good data that children in proximity to

BILL O’LEARY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Post analysis finds more than 4 million children endured lockdowns last school year common refrain among educators, and they’re right, because the cost of ignoring one can be — and has been — dead children. John Czajkowski, who heads security for a 40,000-student district near San Diego, uses an analogy to explain the purpose, and impact, of a lockdown. “It’s like an air bag,” he said, because they save drivers’ lives in car crashes, but the devices might also break noses and crack teeth. His point: Full-scale lockdowns should be employed only when absolutely necessary. To illustrate the harm that a lockdown can do, Franci Crepeau-Hobson, a psychologist, pointed to a pair of schools she worked with in recent years. In December 2013, a teenager killed a fellow senior at Colorado’s Arapahoe High before taking his own life. As CrepeauHobson and her colleagues on the state’s crisis response team treated students and staff in the aftermath, they found a school well prepared to care for teens struggling with grief and fear. Not long after, Crepeau-Hobson was asked to help students from another high school outside Denver. In that case, an off-campus robbery and carjacking left two people shot, but no violence ever reached school grounds. “They were on lockdown for hours,” without any information to alleviate their dread, CrepeauHobson said. Afterward, she said, the school did little to ensure that its students felt OK, though many suffered from stomach pain and headaches. Some struggled to focus in class. Others couldn’t sleep. “It was like, wow, this was what we see after a school shooting,” she said. “They looked very much like kids we’ve seen from other major crises.” STEVEN RICH AND JOHN WOODROW COX (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Rights disputes could limit NFL playoffs on TV Many sports fans nationwide may soon find themselves cut off from some of the most anticipated televised football games of the year as massive media and television companies go to war with one another over the programming fees required to air those matches. Beginning next week, TV customers on Verizon Fios and Charter’s Spectrum service could be hit by widespread channel blackouts after the companies’ contracts with major programming giants expire. In its dispute with Disney, Verizon and its 4.5 million TV customers could lose access Monday to ESPN, Freeform and the Disney Channel, as well as ABC affiliates based in Philadelphia and New York. ABC and ESPN are expected to carry one of the NFL’s wildcard playoff games and the Pro Bowl. The NFL playoffs could also become harder to access for some 6 million Spectrum customers in as many as two dozen markets as a result of its dispute with Tribune Media, according to a company spokesman, because Tribune operates CBS, Fox and NBC affiliates in various markets. Despite the looming headache for pay-TV subscribers, those with digital TV antennas could still get around a blackout by tuning in to broadcast networks directly. BRIAN FUNG

Keys to gridiron glory

Some narratives have pervaded college football all season: Can anyone stop Alabama? Can Oklahoma’s Heisman-winning quarterback Kyler Murray cap his gridiron career with a championship before he turns pro in baseball? Can Clemson ride a freshman quarterback to the school’s second title in three years? Is Notre Dame for real? Like, “for real” for real? Here’s a look at some of the strengths, weaknesses and potential spoilers for each team vying for college football’s ultimate prize. DAN ENNIS (EXPRESS)

How they win: Ride the ground game. With 1,463 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns this season, Travis Etienne is the Tigers’ most lethal offensive weapon. If the Irish stuff Etienne all game, the Tigers have three other running backs who average at least 5.8 yards per carry and have five or more touchdowns this season.

How they win: Stay balanced. With 2,468 yards and 19 passing TDs, Ian Book is the least prolific of the four starting playoff QBs. And neither the leading rusher nor receiver for the Irish has 1,000 yards. But Notre Dame has shown it can hang with anyone by keeping defenses off-balance and spreading the ball around.

How they win: Spread the ball around. Alabama has five receivers with more than 500 yards and has 46 passing TDs this season. The Sooners have intercepted the fewest passes (six) and have allowed more passing TDs (24) than any other playoff team this season.

How they win: Keep Alabama guessing. Heisman winner Kyler Murray has passed for more than 4,000 yards this season, but Alabama may anticipate an air attack. The Sooners also boast three players who have run for 892 yards or more this season.

How they lose: Inexperience at QB. Freshman Trevor Lawrence has the lowest completion percentage (65.0) of any starting quarterback on the four playoff teams. However, he’s been intercepted only four times.

How they lose: Allow big run plays. In the four games the Irish allowed more than 20 points, they gave up an average of 197.8 rushing yards. Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence could be a sneaky threat. More than half of his rushing yards have come over the past three games.

X-factor: Clelin Ferrell. The projected first-round pick has 10.5 sacks to anchor a team that was third in the FBS in that category. He leads a Clemson defense that allows just 2.4 yards per carry, the lowest rate in the country.

X-factor: Julian Love. The All-American cornerback has defended more passes (15) than anyone on the playoff teams and is fifth on the Irish in tackles (61).

LeBron named AP’s top male athlete of the year for third time

How they lose: Injuries and overconfidence. Starting QB Tua Tagovailoa says he’s only “80 to 85 percent” recovered from ankle surgery. Before he got hurt in the SEC title game, the sophomore was having his worst game, completing 10 of 25 passes for 164 yards with one TD and two picks.

How they lose: Poor rush defense. The Sooners have allowed 31 rushing TDs this season — more than twice as many as any other playoff team. Linebackers Kenneth Murray and Curtis Bolton have racked up 140 and 130 tackles this season, but the Sooners have allowed 156.7 yards per game on the ground.

X-factor: Jalen Hurts. If Tagovailoa struggles, the Tide won’t hesitate to go to their backup QB who has played in the past two national title games and led a late rally to win this year’s SEC title.

X-factor: Austin Seibert. The kicker has 128 points and has made 88.2 percent of his field goals, making him the most accurate and prolific kicker on the playoff teams.

Fans voted the Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin the NHL All-Star Game’s Metropolitan Division captain Thursday. It marks his 10th All-Star Game selection. The three other captains — Toronto’s Auston Matthews, Colorado’s Nathan MacKinnon and Edmonton’s Connor McDavid — are all at least 10 years younger than the 33-year-old Ovechkin. “I’m kind of the old horse over there,” he said. “But still getting recognized by the fans, so it’s very important.” Ovechkin leads the league in goals, with 29 in the Capitals’ first 35 games. He’s on pace for the NHL’s first 60-goal campaign since Tampa Bay’s Steven Stamkos in the 2011-12 season. The All-Star Game will be Jan. 26 in San Jose, Calif. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Redskins look to spoil Eagles’ postseason shot

A messy playoff picture

With nothing else left to lose, Washington can end rivals’ season

CLINCHING SCENARIOS

AFC Chiefs (11-4, vs. Raiders): They will clinch the AFC West title and the No. 1 seed with a win. But they will drop to No. 5 if they lose and the Chargers win. Chargers (11-4, at Broncos): They will clinch the AFC West title and the No. 1 seed with a win and a Chiefs loss/tie, or a tie combined with a Chiefs loss. Otherwise, they’ll be the No. 5 seed.

own destiny but at the same time, if you focus on everything else that is going on and we have a slip-up because we’re not focusing on our jobs, it’s really not going to matter,” Eagles tight end Zach Ertz said. The Eagles have been resilient, rebounding after a 41-point loss to the New Orleans Saints dropped their record to 4-6. They won two in a row only to suffer a disappointing overtime loss at Dallas and learning afterward that quarterback Carson Wentz would be sidelined by a back injury. Then Nick Foles stepped in and led Philadelphia to consecutive

REDSKINS All the Redskins can do now is play spoiler. The team opened the season 6-3 and held a surprising lead in the NFC East. But it has lost five of six after starting quarterback Alex Smith and backup Colt McCoy went down with seasonending injuries. “Are we sick about the position we’re in? Yes we are,” coach Jay Gruden said. “There’s 15, 16 other teams that are in the same boat, and I expect they are going to go out and compete the last game of the year also. It’s no different here.” The Eagles, for their part, didn’t expect to be in this position, either. They were the clear favorites in the division after winning the Super Bowl. But inconsistency and injuries plagued them from the start. Now it’s do-or-die for Philadelphia (8-7). A victory Sunday at Washington (7-8), coupled with a loss by the Vikings (8-6-1) at home against the Bears (11-4), gives the Eagles the final wildcard spot and the NFC’s No. 6 seed. A loss sends them on an early vacation. “It’s tough not to control your

It’s Week 17 and there’s plenty to play for Sunday, especially in the AFC, where four teams still have a chance to clinch the No. 1 seed. Here’s a look at what’s at stake for the teams still in playoff contention. (THE WASHINGTON POST/EXPRESS)

victories over 10-win teams. Foles, the Super Bowl MVP last year, was outstanding in an upset win at the Los Angeles Rams and sensational in a comeback win over Houston. Now, he has to do it again — and it may not be enough. If the Vikings win, the Eagles are eliminated. The Eagles can only focus on the Redskins. “All we can control is our preparation and what we do on a day-in-and-day-out basis getting ready for the game, staying in the moment, controlling what we can control,” Foles said.

Patriots (10-5, vs. Jets): They will clinch the No. 1 seed with a win combined with a Chiefs loss and a Chargers loss. They will clinch a first-round bye with a win. But a loss could force them to play on wild-card weekend. Texans (10-5, vs. Jaguars): They will clinch the No. 1 seed with a win combined with a loss by the Chiefs, Chargers and Patriots. They will clinch at least the No. 2 seed with a win and a Patriots loss/tie. But with a loss, the Texans would fall to No. 6 and lose the AFC South to the Colts/ Titans winner.

LOCKED IN Saints (13-2): They have clinched the No. 1 seed. Cowboys (9-6): They are locked in to the No. 4 seed.

The number of road losses the Wizards have this season, the most in the NBA. (They have four road wins.) Opponents have outscored John Wall, right, and Co. in the first quarter of away games by an average of more than five points. But in Wednesday’s 106-95 loss to Detroit, a third-quarter 22-4 Pistons run did in the Wizards. January will bring seven more away games, including one in London against the Knicks. Colts (9-6, at Titans): They will clinch the AFC South title with a win combined with a Texans loss, and they will clinch a playoff berth with a win. But they’ll miss the playoffs with a loss. Titans (9-6, vs. Colts): Like the Colts, they will clinch the AFC South title with a win combined with a Texans loss, and they will clinch a playoff berth with a win. But they’ll miss the playoffs with a loss. Steelers (8-6-1, vs. Bengals): They will clinch the AFC North title with a win combined with a Ravens loss/tie, or a tie combined with a Ravens loss. They will clinch a playoff berth with a win and a Colts-Titans tie. They will be eliminated from playoff contention with a loss.

Ravens (9-6, vs. Browns): They still have a chance at a first-round bye but could also miss the playoffs entirely. Most simply, they will clinch the AFC North title with a win or a Steelers loss. They will be eliminated from playoff contention if they lose and the Steelers win.

Rams (12-3, vs. 49ers): They will clinch the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye with a win/tie or a Bears loss/tie. Otherwise, they’ll be the No. 3 seed. Bears (11-4, at Vikings): They will clinch the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye with a win and a Rams loss. Otherwise, they’ll be the No. 3 seed.

Bruins activate Zdeno Chara after he missed 19 games with MCL Injury

Seahawks (9-6, vs. Cardinals): They clinch the No. 5 seed with a win/tie or a Vikings loss/tie. Otherwise, they’ll be the No. 6 seed. Vikings (8-6-1, vs. Bears): They will clinch the No. 5 seed with a win and a Seahawks loss. They’ll clinch a playoff berth with a win/tie or an Eagles loss/ tie. They’ll miss the playoffs with a loss combined with an Eagles win. Eagles (8-7, at Redskins): They will clinch the No. 6 seed with a win and a Vikings loss. Philadelphia will be eliminated from playoff contention with a loss/tie or a Vikings win/tie.

THE REELIST YEAR IN REVIEW | KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY

The year’s grand surprises You hear things about movies before they come out. Reports from the Cannes, Toronto and Sundance film festivals. Some early reviews, or buzz about a film coming down the pike from a director you like. Of course, it’s nice when the movies that you’ve heard are good are, in fact, good. But there is nothing like getting walloped from out of nowhere by a movie you didn’t expect. It’s like coming home and finding that someone cleaned it. And did the laundry. And bought you a new car. Here are my top 10 movies of 2018 — five of which I didn’t see coming.

1. ‘The Rider’

5. ‘Black Panther’

Oh, good. A story about a rodeo rider from a director I’ve never heard of. This should be JUST GREAT. And you know what? It turned out to be much, much more than just great. Brady Jandreau, an actual cowboy (as in, not an actor), stars in a story loosely based on his life, in which his character has to decide whether to return to the sport he loves after a near-fatal accident. Chloe Zhao, who wrote and directed, created an intensely quiet, stunningly beautiful examination of American masculinity. I have remembered how this movie made me feel through the entire year. No movie lover can ask for anything more than that.

Full disclosure: I knew “Black Panther” was going to be good, because Ryan Coogler doesn’t make bad movies. I just didn’t expect it to be as phenomenal as it was. “Black Panther” isn’t only one of the best superhero movies of all time, but it succeeds on every cinematic level. No other movie this year created a world with the visual depth of Wakanda; no other superhero movie, Marvel or not, has presented such nuanced and complicated characters. Sure, Ryan Coogler doesn’t make bad movies. Ryan Coogler makes great movies.

2. ‘Roma’ 3. ‘First Man’ 4. ‘Annihilation’

6. ‘Sorry to Bother You’ Two surprises in one! In this biting satire, a black man finds wild success as a telemarketer for a not-so-vaguely sinister company in the not-too-far-off future after he begins using his “white voice.” It’s a

great, clever conceit. Then comes the movie’s second act, in which the stakes get raised and the story goes absolutely bonkers in the best way. “Sorry to Bother You” will make you laugh and punch you in the stomach — often at the same time. There’s never been anything like this movie, and I doubt there will be again.

7. ‘The Favourite’ 8. ‘Widows’ 9. ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse‘ When I first saw the trailer for this animated film, I assumed it was going straight to video because did theaters really need ANOTHER Spider-Man movie? (No.) Then, 20 minutes into the movie, I realized I was looking at something groundbreaking. Newbie webslinger Miles Morales must work with five other Spider-People

(all drawn in their signature styles) to save the world. The visual innovation is backed by a clever, emotional story about how we all can be heroes — and why it’s important that we are.

10. ‘Eighth Grade’ In “Eighth Grade” there is no quest; it’s just Kayla (Elsie Fisher, who in a weaker year for actresses would be getting serious Oscar buzz) attempting to survive her last week of middle school. The expected awkwardness abounds — and is heightened by the ubiquitous presence of social media — but what’s surprising is the amount of empathy writer-director Bo Burnham builds not only for the sometimes-obnoxious Kayla, but for those of us who know we were awful in middle school. It’s rare that identifying with a character makes you more forgiving of yourself.

“Black Panther”

RBG biopic is formulaic to a fault The accomplishments of Ruth Bader Ginsburg are far more stirring and substantial than the film “On the Basis of Sex,” a formulaic biopic that follows her life from 1956 to 1975. Director Mimi Leder and writer Daniel Stiepleman (Ginsburg’s nephew) squeeze every incident covered by the Felicity Jones-starring film into some Hollywood template, simplifying and glamorizing the narrative. Although it’s not a literal sequel to “RBG,” the hit documentary from earlier this year, the film does seem designed for viewers who just can’t get enough Ginsburg. Viewed through that lens, “On the Basis of Sex” sort of works. As filmmaking, it’s clunky, but as fan service, it’s effective. MARK JENKINS (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

WEEKEND | 12.28.2018 | EXPRESS | 21

Against all odds, Christian Bale is a dead ringer for former VP Dick Cheney in “Vice.”

A bold, in-your-face misfire Christian Bale shines, but he can’t save the Dick Cheney film ‘Vice’ FILM REVIEW Christian Bale brings his A game, his Z game and everything in between to “Vice,” in which he inhabits former Vice President Dick Cheney down to his distinctive, sideways grimace and wheezily stentorian inhalations. It’s always deliciously entertaining to watch a great actor plunge into a role with this much brio and lack of vanity. But once the parlor game has ended, the question lingers: That commitment and uncanny technical prowess has been deployed in the service of what, exactly? Written and directed by Adam McKay, “Vice” plots the rise

of Cheney to one of the most notorious gray eminences in American politics. It has the same frenetic, absurdist energy that propelled McKay’s last film, “The Big Short,” but in this case the form feels even more queasily at odds with the content. Although the filmmaker’s ambition is commendable, the end result feels both busily overdetermined and bluntly simplistic. As “Vice” gets underway, Cheney is a classic American lost boy, drinking and carousing until his fiancee, Lynne (Amy Adams), reads him the riot act: Get your act together, son, or this marriage is over before it begins. Thus is introduced one of McKay’s most insistent thematic threads in “Vice,” which portrays Lynne Cheney as the schemingly ambitious Lady Macbeth behind her husband’s rise.

‘Vice’ (R, 132 min.) DIRECTOR: Adam McKay STARS: Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Sam Rockwell, Steve Carell IN A NUTSHELL: Dick Cheney rises through the political ranks, seizing unprecedented power as vice president to George W. Bush.

That ascent, “Vice” explains, began in earnest when Cheney was a congressional intern and met the man who would seal and accelerate his fate: Donald Rumsfeld, played by Steve Carell with a characteristic goofiness that’s distractingly off-key. Cheney and Rumsfeld perfect the dark art of D.C. survival at its most cynically Darwinian. It’s not conservative ideals but the raw pursuit of power that drives

Cheney in “Vice,” which centers on his most far-reaching role, that of vice president to George W. Bush (Sam Rockwell). What makes “Vice” so frightening is how Cheney’s dismantling of norms like oversight and accountability obtained near-permanent purchase. But the historical long game isn’t as compelling to McKay, who seems focused on delivering as many kitschy, cartoonish parting shots as he can. Structurally, “Vice” is a mess. As a Wiki-wacky burlesque, the film never achieves the Shakespearean comprehension or catharsis to which it clearly aspires — just snarky self-amusement. The eminence at the story’s center remains stubbornly in the grays. There’s so very much of this movie. Is that really all there is? ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘Beale Street’ navigated with precision, care FILM REVIEW In 2017, writer-director Barry Jenkins won a best-picture Oscar for “Moonlight,” a film that melded expressionism and restraint with a delicate but firm sense of control. Jenkins brings that same sensibility to bear on “If Beale Street Could Talk,” his exquisite adaptation of the James Baldwin novel. From its very first moments, “If Beale Street Could Talk” signals that it will not be a typical movie: Tish and Fonny, played by KiKi Layne and Stephan James, walk together in a New York park. As Tish narrates, this fairly conventional love scene turns out to be a flashback, slamming into her present-day reality, in which she’s visiting Fonny in jail. In a chronological mosaic of memories, the film — which takes place in the early 1970s — chronicles pivotal moments in Tish and Fonny’s romance, including the false accusation that would threaten it so gravely. But because Tish and Fonny are such subdued figures, it’s the supporting characters who wind up being more vivid and indelible — most notably, Regina King, who is ferocious and tender as Tish’s mother. Like a raindrop on a leaf, “If Beale Street Could Talk” seems to tremble and shine, fiercely protecting the world inside its fragile walls — a world that, once Jenkins invites us in, we come to see through his eyes as his own beloved community. SUMMARY: Remember how “Get Out” was billed as horror, but then was more of a super-smart satire? Jordan Peele’s follow-up to last year’s blockbuster seems to be a more traditional horror film, in the sense that it looks like we’re all going to walk out of the theater terrified of scissors. It’ll probably still be super-smart, though. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

SUMMARY: Chloe Grace Moretz plays a young woman who finds a purse on the subway. Instead of doing the normal thing, which is to ignore it and hope it’s not a bomb, she takes it back to its owner. She then befriends the owner, who eventually becomes that annoying friend who texts all the time and also stabs you with really long needles. K.P.K.

@SHAWNSMUTUAL, joking about the social media platform’s ill-timed update Thursday morning. The “test” format presented some Instagram users with a feed where they had to swipe side-to-side to see new posts, as opposed to the usual vertical scrolling. The premature update angered those who encountered it, leading Instagram to fix what it called a “bug” within an hour. The drama did give users another chance to ask Instagram to return to its chronological feed, which was abandoned in 2016.

When an employee called over a co-worker and spoke in Arabic, he insulted them and those who came to their defense, saying, “All you Arabs and Democrats, go back where you came from.” Macy’s said it was investigating the incident.

for why Belle should have chosen Gaston in “Beauty and the Beast.” Schwartz asserts that the movie takes place in the late 18th century, right before the French Revolution, and that Belle and the Beast/ Prince Adam would have been executed due to their royal status. But with Gaston, a working-class man, Belle would likely have survived.

REVERSALS

Don’t cry for Biebs, Argentina

Demi fashions a new love with designer Demi Lovato is “totally head over heels” for fashion designer and rumored boyfriend Henry Levy, a source told Us Weekly. According to the source, Levy is sober, and “the fact that the two of them ... have had their ups and downs in that regard is a huge deal to her.” Lovato overdosed in July and is trying to surround herself with “sober, like-minded friends” who can support her recovery, the source said. (EXPRESS)

Justin Bieber is now allowed to return to Argentina without worrying about getting arrested, TMZ reported. Argentina’s Supreme Court reversed an earlier conviction of Bieber for allegedly ordering his bodyguard to attack a photographer outside a club and steal his gear in 2013. In 2014, the singer was ordered to return to Argentina for questioning but never appeared. He was indicted in 2016. TMZ reported that the conviction was appealed multiple times, and a “Document of Resolution” was filed for the case on Dec. 18. Bieber tweeted in 2016 that the situation made him unable to bring his “Purpose” world tour to the country. (EXPRESS)

Has anyone split due to reconcilable differences? Forest Whitaker and his wife, Keisha Nash, are getting a divorce after 22 years of marriage. In court documents obtained by The Blast, Whitaker cited irreconcilable differences for the split, and said that he does not want to pay spousal support. The couple married in 1996 after meeting on the set of “Blown Away.” They have two daughters, Sonnet and True. (EXPRESS)
