Man fails at armed robbery, discovers his inner folk artist

Nothing’s more infuriating than extra money, right?

Police in Madison, Wis., arrested a barber after he gave a man an unwanted “Three Stooges” cut. The patron said the barber asked him not to fidget. The barber then nicked the man’s ear with his clippers Friday before running them down the middle of his head with the shortest attachment, police said, “leaving him looking ... like Larry from ‘The Three Stooges.’ ” The barber said it was an accident — but he was charged with disorderly conduct. At least one employee at a Circle K in Akron, Ohio, just couldn’t take the “gunman” seriously. Police said Jeffrey Derringer — a frequent customer at the shop — walked in with what looked like a rifle over his head, UPI reported Thursday. He demanded cash, but the worker refused after noticing that the weapon was made of furniture pieces, a spring and a pipe that had been taped together. Derringer, 48, was charged with robbery. (EXPRESS)

A man in Cocoa, Fla., said he punched an ATM because it gave him too much cash, a police report said. Michael Joseph Oleksik, 23, caused about $5,000 in damage to an ATM at a Wells Fargo branch and was charged last week with criminal mischief, police said. Surveillance video showed him allegedly pummeling the touch screen. He said he was frustrated because he didn’t know what to do about the ATM error and was running late. (AP)

A $26 ham sandwich

Charmed by ‘Mean Girls’

This year, pop-up bars exploded into a full-throated phenomenon. Chief among them: the trio of bars in Shaw run by Derek Brown and Angie Fetherston, where the decor and drink menus have switched between cherry blossoms, “Game of Thrones” and the return of the holiday-themed Miracle on Seventh Street.

Calling it a “jambon beurre” isn’t fooling anybody. This wildly priced dish, served at the luxe French restaurant Mirabelle — helmed by former White House chef Frank Ruta — is simply a ham sandwich. Yet it wasn’t just a sandwich — it represented the apex of the city’s rapidly evolving dining scene.

The Tina Fey-penned musical based on the “Mean Girls” movie got a lot of buzz during its month-long tryout at the National Theatre this fall before moving to Broadway. The show will surely see continued success on Broadway, even though other musicals may feel personally victimized by it.

Spotlight on The Wharf

Kusama at the Hirshhorn

Dave Chappelle no longer calls the District home, but the comedian spent plenty of time here in 2017, giving a speech when his likeness joined the new mural at Ben’s Chili Bowl and paying tribute to Norman Lear at the Kennedy Center Honors. The highlight was his 17-show residency at the Warner Theatre.

Love it or hate it, poke is here to stay. Fans of the Hawaiian dish, most commonly made of rice and raw fish, revere it for its simplicity and light-yet-filling qualities. This year, a number of poke concepts opened in the District, including Poke Papa, Abunai Poke, Poki District, Pokeworks and Honeyfish Poke.

In 2012, Union Market paved the way for food halls — indoor markets with vendors hawking diverse cuisines. This year, a spurt of new ones opened: the Block, an Asian food hall in Annandale, Va.; and Isabella Eatery, a sprawling 41,000-square-foot food emporium in Tysons Galleria. Three more are on the way.

With the debut of the Wharf, the Southwest Waterfront has become a dynamic part of town. The 24-acre project added an entirely new destination within the District, with restaurants from the who’s who of D.C. chefs, and entertainment options like The Anthem — a 6,000- capacity concert hall.

Guests who wanted to see “Infinity Mirrors,” Yayoi Kusama’s exhibition at the Hirshhorn, displayed infinite patience, all for a chance to spend a few seconds inside the polka-dot dreamscapes of the Japanese artist’s mirrored rooms. The exhibition brought record-breaking crowds to the museum in the spring.

D.C. bundles up as temps drop THE DISTRICT It was too cold to, among other things, ice skate Thursday morning. Washington woke to its coldest December morning in almost a decade, and the frigid and the frightened braced for what promises to be the chilliest stretch of winter in two years. Much of the country was locked in the record-breaking freeze as relentless waves of cold air swept down from the high latitudes. The north-central parts of the U.S. could see temperatures fall 40 to 50 degrees below their normal year-end marks in coming days. Forecasters say the nation’s average low will be a feeble 10 degrees when 2018 begins Monday, with a third of the country seeing

deemed too risky for the skin of little skaters and the ice guards who swoosh around them. The year is ending at a far different temperature than 2016. It was nearly 70 degrees on Dec. 27 last year, and people noticed. Friday night could be in the teens. “What happened?” said Stacie

Review finds shooting by police was unjustified The D.C. police officer who fatally shot an unarmed motorcyclist last year had no reason to pull his gun and was not in danger when he fired, police concluded in an internal investigation that contradicts the officer’s account. The review, obtained by The Washington Post, showed that Officer Brian Trainer and his partner, Officer Jordan Palmer, violated department policies early on Sept. 11, 2016, as they pursued and attempted to arrest 31-year-old motorcyclist Terrence Sterling. Trainer, who fired the fatal shots, is on paid administrative leave. (TWP) HERNDON, VA.

Study: Pot use in pregnancy is on the rise

A suicide bombing at a cultural center in Kabul caused scores of casualties, overwhelming a nearby hospital.

41 killed in ISIS attack on Afghan Shiite center Pro-Iranian news outlet named as possible target of extremists KABUL, AFGHANISTAN An Islamic State suicide bomber struck a Shiite cultural center in Kabul on Thursday, killing at least 41 people and underscoring the extremist group’s growing reach in Afghanistan even as its self-styled caliphate in Iraq and Syria has been dismantled. The attack may have targeted the pro-Iran Afghan Voice news agency housed in the two-story building. The Sunni extremists of ISIS view Shiite Muslims as apostates and have repeatedly attacked Afghanistan’s Shiite minority and targets linked to

neighboring Iran. The attack wounded more than 80 people, many of whom suffered severe burns. Local Shiite leader Abdul Hussain Ramazandada said the bomber slipped into an academic seminar at the center and blew himself up among the participants. More bombs went off just outside the center as people fled. The ISIS-linked Aamaq news agency said four bombs were used in the assault, one strapped to the suicide attacker. It said the center was funded by Iran and used to propagate Shiite beliefs. Ali Reza Ahmadi, a journalist with Afghan Voice, said he leaped from the window of his secondfloor office after the first bomb went off. He saw flames pouring

from the basement. “I jumped from the roof toward the basement, yelling at people to get water to put out the fire,” he said. At nearby Istiqlal Hospital, Director Mohammed Sabir Nasib said the emergency room was overwhelmed. By late afternoon, Health Ministry spokesman Wahid Mujro said 41 people were dead and 84 others wounded. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani called the attack a “crime against humanity.” The cultural center was housed in a simple building surrounded by mud-brick homes in the Shiite-dominated neighborhood of Dasht-e-Barchi, home to some of Kabul’s poorest residents. More women — especially younger women — are testing positive for marijuana use during pregnancy in Northern California. Some 22 percent of the women younger than 18, and 19 percent of those between 18 and 24, used pot, while less than 5 percent of those older than 25 did. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘Gaming disorder’ to be labeled an addictive illness

The World Health Organization plans to include “gaming disorder” in its list of mental health conditions next year, a nod to the addictive nature of video games, CNN reports. A draft of the WHO’s incoming diagnostic manual, the International Classification of Diseases, puts “gaming disorder” under Disorders Due to Addictive Behaviors, with its description featuring many familiar characteristics of addiction. U.S., state laws on pot will clash in California POLITICS California legalizes marijuana for recreational use Monday, but that won’t stop federal agents from seizing the drug — even in tiny amounts — on busy freeways and backcountry highways. Marijuana possession still will be prohibited at eight Border Patrol checkpoints in California, a reminder that state and federal laws collide when it comes to pot. The U.S. government classifies marijuana as a controlled substance, like heroin and LSD. The checkpoints, located up to 100 miles from Mexico, are seen as a final line of defense against immigrants who elude agents at the border. They also have been a trap for U.S. citizens carrying drugs, even tiny bags of pot. About 40 percent of pot seizures at Border Patrol checkpoints from fiscal years 2013 to 2016 were an ounce or less from U.S. citizens, according to a Government Accountability Office report. California’s new law allows anyone 21 and over to carry up to an ounce. The clash between federal and state marijuana laws was seen on a smaller scale near the Canadian border in Washington after that state legalized pot in 2014. As of next week, California will be among seven states and D.C. with legal recreational pot. U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has said he would take a close look at federal enforcement, suggesting a tougher stance than during the Obama administration. ELLIOT SPAGAT (AP)

Thousands of island police owed overtime call in sick

Police: No more arrests for flouting dress code

Apple offers $29 batteries for slowed-down iPhones

Thousands of police officers are calling in sick every day in Puerto Rico, partly to press demands for unpaid overtime pay for hurricane recovery efforts as concerns grow over people’s safety in a U.S. territory struggling to restore power. The increase in absences recently prompted Puerto Rico Police Chief Michelle Hernandez to recommend that U.S. National Guard soldiers help fill the temporary vacancies, but that idea was rejected by Gov. Ricardo Rossello. Normally, an average of 550 police officers are absent every day across Puerto Rico. But recently, more than 2,700 officers on average have been absent daily. (AP)

Police in Tehran, the Iranian capital, said Thursday they will no longer arrest women for failing to observe the Islamic dress code in place since the 1979 revolution. The announcement signaled an easing of punishments for violating the country’s conservative dress code, as called for by the young and reformminded Iranians who helped re-elect President Hassan Rouhani, a relative moderate, this year. The Tasnim news agency said violators will instead be made to attend classes given by police. Repeat offenders could still be subject to legal action, and the dress code remains in place outside the capital. (AP)

Apple apologized to customers Thursday for not being clear that the company slows down phones with aging batteries. Apple admitted to the practice this month and is facing up to eight lawsuits from iPhone owners. Apple promised that it will “give users more visibility into the health of their iPhone’s battery” and let people see whether their battery’s age affects their phone’s performance. Apple is offering a discount on battery replacements to anyone with an iPhone 6 or later, the company said in a statement. A battery replacement will cost $29 instead of $79 starting in late January. ALABAMA Democrat Doug Jones’ historic victory over Republican Roy Moore was declared official Thursday as Alabama election officials certified him the winner of the special Senate election this month, despite claims from his opponent of voting irregularities. Jones defeated Moore on Dec. 12 by about 22,000 votes in a stunning victory in a deeply red state. It was the first Democratic Senate victory in a quartercentury in Alabama. Moore was dogged by accusations of sexual misconduct involving teenage girls that occurred decades ago. The state’s former chief justice refused to concede and even filed a last-ditch lawsuit hours before the certification, but a judge rejected his claims. Alabama election officials also found no evidence of voting irregularities. A spokesman for Jones earlier called Moore’s lawsuit a “desperate attempt ... to subvert the will of the people.” “The election is over. It’s time to move on,” Sam Coleman wrote in an email. Jones will be sworn in Wednesday, narrowing the Republican

Moore’s campaign was deeply wounded by the sexual misconduct accusations. Moore denied the accusations and said in the lawsuit that he had passed a polygraph test to prove they are false. Moore’s attorney wrote in the wide-ranging complaint that he believed there were irregularities during the election, including that voters may have been brought in from other states. Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill said he had not found any evidence of voter fraud, but that his office will investigate any complaint Moore submits. KIM CHANDLER (AP)

2017 rewind

The Year of the Reckoning The #MeToo movement toppled powerful men and ushered in an era of believing sexual assault victims harassment to assault to rape. To date, some 80 women have come forward; Weinstein still denies all nonconsensual sex. Then came the tweet heard ’round the world. “If all the women who have been sexually harassed or assaulted wrote ‘Me too’ as a status,” actress/activist Alyssa Milano tweeted on Oct. 15, “we might give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem.” Then she went to bed. “I couldn’t have been in bed more than eight hours, because I’m a mom,” Milano says now. When she awoke, tens of thousands had taken up the #MeToo hashtag (a phrase introduced 10 years ago by social activist Tarana Burke). Less than 10 days later, Milano tweeted that more than 1.7 million people in 85 countries had used the hashtag. “The thing that was so surprising was the sheer magnitude and the quickness of how it happened,” Milano says. But she feels the conditions had been ripe for about a year. It began, she says, with the election of President Trump, who had bragged openly about groping women. On top of that came some aggressive investigative reporting and the domino effect of women emboldening each other to come forward. Public fascination with anything Hollywood didn’t hurt either. “For this to have taken off the way it did, it had to be a perfect storm and we had to be ready,” Milano says. Even before #MeToo happened and just a few days after the Weinstein story broke, Anita Hill was sure something significant was happening. “I think we need something to push the needle and I think this has done it,” says Hill, a symbol of the fight against sexual harassment ever since her 1991 Senate testimony against then-Supreme Court nominee

YEAR IN REVIEW It began with a news story, and then a tweet, and suddenly it seemed like everything had changed overnight. 2017 will forever be known as the Year of the Reckoning. Or, more precisely, the year of the beginning of the reckoning. Because at year’s end, the phenomenon of powerful men being knocked off their perches by allegations of sexual misconduct — in Hollywood, on morning television, in chic restaurant kitchens, in the U.S. Senate — showed no signs of slowing. Each morning, we awoke to ask: “Who’s next?” To that question, we should also add, “What next?” Because as the year drew to a close, many were also wondering just how deep and lasting the change would prove to be going forward. Was this, indeed, the cultural earthquake many have called it? Or was there a chance it might all eventually slip away? “We can’t be sure,” says Gloria Steinem. “But what I CAN be sure of is that this is the first time I’ve seen women being believed.” And that, says the feminist author, “is profoundly different.” Whatever forces had been stirring under the surface, things burst into the open with an October scoop in The New York Times, a story alleging shocking misconduct by Harvey Weinstein. The powerful producer’s misbehavior had long been the subject of whispers, but it was actress Ashley Judd who finally gave a well-known name to the allegations — a crucial launching point for what followed. Her account of a hotel room encounter in which Weinstein asked her to give him a massage or watch him shower sounded familiar to many others, who were inspired in the ensuing days to come forward with their own allegations against Weinstein, from

Clarence Thomas. Still, she notes, it was a lot easier for Hollywood stars like Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie to speak out than it was for ordinary women experiencing harassment. But Hill, who for years has been living a quiet academic life at Brandeis University, stresses that the next step has to be more than just conversation: “We now

have to start putting into place measures at schools and workplaces and the military ... about how people should be treated, and we have to enforce them.” As the weeks went on, the accusers multiplied, and so did the accused, from Hollywood (Kevin Spacey, Louis C.K., Brett Ratner, Dustin Hoffman) to the news business (top morning hosts Charlie

Rose and Matt Lauer) to the music world (Russell Simmons) to politics (Sen. Al Franken, Alabama candidate Roy Moore) to the food world (Mario Batali). The accused lost jobs, TV shows, book deals, a Senate seat — at a dizzying speed (Spacey was even erased from a completed movie). Some simply apologized, while others fought back — like Simmons, with his hashtag #NotMe. Some apologies were more effective than others. Spacey drew flak for deciding to come out as gay as he apologized for unwanted sexual advances; Batali was scorned for appending to his email-blast apology a recipe for Pizza Dough Cinnamon Rolls. Not to be forgotten were the accusers who decided not to come forward with their names, many out of fear of retaliation. Attorney Gloria Allred, who held news conferences with some Weinstein accusers, said there were many more she’d spoken to who have not yet gone public. And what about the alleged abusers we’ve never heard of? “There have been stunning accounts of farm workers harassed in the field, factory workers on lines, restaurant workers,” says law professor Catharine MacKinnon, who decades ago pioneered the legal claim that sexual harassment is a form of sex discrimination. “They don’t have the high-profile man ... but I’m telling you, to the women he does it to, he’s plenty big.” Still, says MacKinnon, of the University of Michigan and Harvard law schools, “any time any victim is believed, it’s a miracle.” And that’s why the events of late 2017 have been unprecedented. “It’s amazing to me that people are being believed and listened to and responded to, and their accounts being acted on,” she says. “That’s never happened before in the history of the world.” JOCELYN NOVECK (AP)

Sexual misconduct

2

Trump’s first year

The wave of sexual misconduct allegations that toppled Hollywood power brokers, politicians, media icons and many others was the top news story of 2017, according to The Associated Press’ annual poll of U.S. editors and news directors. The No. 2 story was Donald Trump’s tumultuous first year as president. A year ago, Trump’s unexpected victory over Democrat Hillary Clinton in the presidential election was a near-unanimous pick for the top news story of 2016. Here are 2017’s top 10 stories, ranked in order. DAVID CRARY (AP)

The controversies started on Inauguration Day, with the new president being challenged over his claims about the size of the crowd, and persisted throughout the year. Trump’s approval ratings hovered around record-low territory, his base remained fiercely loyal, and his relentless tweeting — often in the early morning hours — provoked a striking mix of outrage, mockery and grateful enthusiasm.

Scandals involving sexual misdeeds by prominent men are nothing new in America, but there’s never been anything remotely like the deluge of allegations unleashed this year by women who were emboldened to speak out by the accusers who preceded them. Luminaries toppled from their perches included movie magnate Harvey Weinstein, media stars Bill O’Reilly, Matt Lauer and Charlie Rose, and several celebrity chefs and members of Congress.

Las Vegas shooting

After amassing an arsenal of weapons, a 64-year-old high-stakes video poker player unleashed a barrage of gunfire from a high-rise casino-hotel that killed 58 people and injured hundreds among a crowd attending an open-air concert along the Las Vegas Strip. Weeks after the Oct. 1 massacre, questions about the gunman’s motives remained unanswered.

North Korea

At times the taunts had a schoolyard flavor to them — a “dotard” versus “Little Rocket Man.” But they came from two world leaders with nuclear arms at their disposal — Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Fueling the tensions were North Korea’s latest tests of a hydrogen bomb and of ballistic missiles that potentially could reach the U.S. mainland.

Trump fired FBI Director James Comey, but a former FBI chief, Robert Mueller, was soon appointed to investigate potential coordination between Russia and Trump’s election campaign. By mid-December, Mueller’s team had brought federal charges against four people, including former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and former national security adviser Michael Flynn, above, who pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI.

Obamacare

Despite repeated efforts, Republicans in Congress failed to repeal Barack Obama’s health care law and replace it with a new plan. At one point, a deciding vote against a GOP replacement bill was cast by Republican Sen. John McCain. But questions remained as to how Obama’s plan would fare going forward. The GOP’s tax bill eventually eliminated Obamacare’s individual mandate, but left the essential parts of the law intact.

Hurricane onslaught

In a four-week span, hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria ravaged Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico and other Caribbean islands. Harvey killed more than 80 people in Texas and caused an estimated $150 billion in damage. Irma killed scores of people in the Caribbean and U.S., including 12 residents of a Florida nursing home that lost its air conditioning. Maria damaged more than 200,000 homes in Puerto Rico, caused lengthy power outages and prompted an investigation into whether the official death toll of 64 was vastly undercounted.

Without a single Democratic vote, Republicans in Congress pushed through a sweeping $1.5 trillion tax overhaul that will cut corporate taxes while producing mixed results for individuals. GOP lawmakers, backed by Trump, said the bill would have broad benefits by accelerating economic growth. Critics said consequences would include higher budget deficits and the potential loss of health care coverage for millions of Americans.

The first big terror attack of 2017 came on New Year’s Day, when a gunman killed 39 at a nightclub in Istanbul. Subsequent targets of global terror included an Ariana Grande concert in England, a bike path in New York City, above, and the historic La Rambla promenade in Barcelona, Spain. In October, a truck bombing in Somalia killed more than 500 people; in November, an attack on a crowded mosque in Egypt killed more than 300.

After lengthy assaults, an array of forces drove the Islamic State from its two main strongholds — the city of Mosul in Iraq, and its self-styled capital, Raqqa, in Syria. She was 22, unmarried and unemployed in 1969 when she sought an abortion in Texas, where it was illegal. McCorvey’s legal challenge under the pseudonym “Jane Roe” led to the Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Roe v. Wade in 1973 that legalized abortion. She later became an anti-abortion activist.

Her 2013 victory in the Supreme Court helped lead to same-sex weddings nationally. Her suit challenged the law that kept her from getting a marital deduction on the estate of the woman she had married in Canada. The court said legally married same-sex couples deserve the same federal benefits afforded hetero couples.

In D.C., a year of rebuke

What D.C. read and listened to in the past year The D.C. Public Library released its list of what Washingtonians read and listened to in 2017. These are the most popular of the more than 4 million items borrowed or downloaded from the library. (EXPRESS)

It’s no secret that Washington, D.C., is no fan of President Trump, who received just 4 percent of the city’s vote in the 2016 presidential election. The Post found that just six months into his term, one out of every three Washingtonians had marched in protest against Trump or his policies. Here’s a look back at the more memorable protests in D.C. in 2017. (EXPRESS/THE WASHINGTON POST)

Inauguration riots

The Women’s March

Protests of President Trump began on a violent note on Inauguration Day. Hundreds — many from outside the area — were arrested after rioting broke out that left six police officers injured and caused tens of thousands of dollars in damage to vehicles and store windows across 16 blocks of the city. Earlier this month, the first six people to face trial on multiple charges of rioting and destruction of property were acquitted of all charges, a victory not only for the defendants but also for advocates who argued that the government overreached in its effort to prosecute more than 200 who were arrested. An additional 166 defendants are scheduled for trial through mid-2018.

On Jan. 21, as many as half a million people participated in the Women’s March, a sharp contrast to the sparse crowds at Trump’s inauguration a day earlier. What started as a Facebook post by a Hawaii retiree became an unprecedented international rebuke of a new president that packed cities around the world. Metro officials said it was the second-busiest day in the Washington subway system’s history, with 1,001,613 trips. (On Trump’s Inauguration Day, the system recorded 570,557 trips.) In October, Women’s March organizers and supporters met in Detroit to discuss the next steps to take, including ways to support more female candidates running for office.

Projection protest

#RESIST

In May, D.C. projection artist Robin Bell took a different approach to airing his grievances with the Trump administration by displaying animated anti-Trump messages about the president’s alleged conflicts of interest onto the facade of the Trump International Hotel. Despite being up only a few minutes, the messages went viral over social media. Since then, Bell has projected protest slogans on a Confederate statue in Judiciary Square, the Justice Department and the Newseum, among others. He even lit up a shrine in Tokyo in November while visiting Japan the same week as the president.

Like Robin Bell’s projections around the District, many of the protests this year increasingly combined performance art and catchy visuals to toss a made-to-go-viral insult straight at the president. One of the highest-profile was when Greenpeace activists unfurled a giant “Resist” banner in January that was visible from the White House. Other actions included an appearance by a towering inflatable chicken with Trumpian Orange hair outside the White House in August (get yours on eBay for $498.99), and playing Trump’s infamous “Access Hollywood” tape from a Jumbotron on the Mall in October.

First base at Nationals Park

April 28 and Aug. 12

In his typically electric style, Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin needed just 35 seconds to reach a major milestone in a 5-2 win over the Penguins. With a first-minute goal in his 880th game, the gaptoothed Russian became the 84th NHL player to tally 1,000 points. He stood to soak in the home crowd’s applause, then scored another on a power play for No. 1,001.

Facing a pitcher known to look and throw like a Norse god, the Nats put on a display of power that would show why this year’s team scored more runs (819) than any other in franchise history. Anthony Rendon led the charge in a 23-5 win over Noah Syndergaard and the Mets, going 6-for-6 with three homers and 10 RBIs. He became the 13th player to knock in at least 10 in a game.

John Wall had to race just to get the inbounds pass from Otto Porter Jr. Once he did, he took two dribbles and drilled a 26-foot shot that kept the Wizards alive in the playoffs. With the 3-pointer, Wall delivered a 92-91 win over the Celtics in Game 6 of the East semifinals. When the win was complete, he jumped on the scorer’s table and yelled, “This is our home! This is my house!”

Expectations for Washington’s new weapon were never higher than they were when Terrelle Pryor Sr. went viral with a fan’s video of his ridiculous one-handed touchdown catch in practice. After impressing in camp, Pryor never found his rhythm. He had 20 catches — and just one TD — in nine games before going on injured reserve.

A crumpled player at first base made Nats fans hold their breath on two occasions. New center fielder Adam Eaton suffered a season-ending ACL tear while stretching for the base in an early loss to the Mets. Almost four months later, Bryce Harper skidded on a slippery first base and missed six weeks with a bone bruise and a calf strain.

Close-up shots of Max Scherzer, who won his second straight NL Cy Young Award this year, show he’s as much of a terror to censors as he is to batters. A 2-1 win over the Dodgers was a prime example. His first 11 outs came via strikeout. He fanned 14 total. And he snarled and cursed at himself as he threw a firstpitch strike in the seventh inning.

Coach DJ Durkin’s second year at Maryland would not bring a breakthrough, but one looked imminent in the first week of a 4-8 season. The Terrapins stunned No. 23 Texas in Austin with a 51-41 victory. QB Kasim Hill, above, spelled an injured Tyrrell Pigrome and converted a third-and-19 before scoring on a key 3-yard TD run.

Kirk Cousins boosters can point to a 17-14 win in Seattle when detractors say the quarterback cowers in big moments. He led a late comeback with three starting linemen inactive. Cousins got the ball back with 1:34 left and led the Redskins 69 yards with two long completions to set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Robert Kelley.

After a first-round series that included a hat trick against the Blue Jackets, Pittsburgh’s Jake Guentzel continued his hot streak in the Caps’ annual playoff collapse. The rookie center racked up eight points in the seven-game series with Washington, including two goals and an assist in Game 2 for the eventual Stanley Cup champions.

The most bizarre inning in Nats history had already seen Max Scherzer blow a one-run lead in relief when things got really weird. Matt Wieters dropped a third strike, made a throwing error and then cried that the Cubs’ batter had interfered with him on the two-out, dropped third strike. He was ignored, but MLB later said Wieters was right.

Solving the semifinals The teams left standing all have a loss on their résumés, so there’s a blueprint out there on how to beat them. While each of their lone defeats could be chalked up to a perfect day for the opposition, each one also contains hints that their rivals will have studied by the time they take the field New Year’s Day. Here’s what we’ve learned about each semifinalist. GABE HIATT (EXPRESS) NO. 1 CLEMSON (12-1) VS. NO. 4 ALABAMA (11-1) Sugar Bowl, 8:45 p.m. Monday in New Orleans, ESPN

The loss: Iowa State, 38-31, Oct. 7

The loss: Auburn, 40-17, Nov. 11

The loss: Syracuse, 27-24, Oct. 14

The loss: Auburn, 26-14, Nov. 25

The lesson: The Sooners’ lackadaisical defense may be their downfall. That’s not exactly breaking news, but it’s still shocking to consider they gave up 21 straight points at home to a Cyclones team that entered the game at 2-2 and was starting a new quarterback. The Iowa State game shows that OU is vulnerable even when its Heisman Trophy-winning QB shines. Baker Mayfield threw for 306 yards and two TDs with a rushing score in the loss.

The lesson: The passing game must rise to the occasion. Georgia seniors Nick Chubb and Sonny Michel have combined for 2,123 yards rushing and 26 touchdown runs. But the Bulldogs were held to just 46 yards on the ground at Auburn, which outgained them 488-230 and held them to 3-for-14 on third downs. Freshman quarterback Jake Fromm plays mostly mistake-free — he’s thrown five interceptions with 21 TD passes — but he has to be able create plays when the run game stalls.

The lesson: The Tigers can’t give up the big play. Clemson has the seventh-best passing defense in the country, allowing an average of 165.1 yards per game. But against the Orange, the Tigers allowed Eric Dungey to throw for 278 yards, including three touchdown passes that all counted toward six completions of 20 yards or more. Clemson QB Kelly Bryant missed the second half with a concussion, but he returned the following game and has been on a roll ever since.

The lesson: The Crimson Tide can’t afford to abandon the run. Coach Nick Saban has won four national titles at Alabama with brutish running backs, imposing defenses and dynamic special teams. While QB Jalen Hurts ran 18 times for 82 yards against Auburn, no Alabama running back got more than six carries. The Tide let RB Kerryon Johnson rush for 104 yards and fool them with a jump pass for a touchdown. The Tide also botched some snaps.

The gamebreaker: Junior Roquan Smith, winner of the Butkus award given to the nation’s top linebacker, was MVP of the SEC title game. He leads the team in tackles (113), sacks (5.5) and quarterback hurries (17).

The gamebreaker: The Crimson Tide knows it’s Hunter Renfrow. The junior has a team-high 55 catches for the Tigers this year. He had 10 grabs for 92 yards and two TDs — including the game-winner — in last season’s title game.

GETTY IMAGES

The gamebreaker: The Sooners are also the team that beat Ohio State and Oklahoma State on the road with Mayfield steering the nation’s No. 4 scoring offense (44.9 points per game). The trash-talking QB has tossed 41 touchdowns against five picks.

Military Bowl: Backup QB Zach Abey rushes for 5 TDs to lead Navy to 49-7 win over Virginia

Maryland forward Justin Jackson has a torn right labrum and will miss the rest of the season, coach Mark Turgeon said Thursday. The sophomore already missed three games with what was called a sore right shoulder. Turgeon said Jackson, who has struggled offensively this year, has been dealing with the shoulder injury all season. The decision to shut him down came after he got a second medical opinion. Jackson is expected to have surgery soon. Maryland (11-3) closes out nonconference play against UMBC on Friday (8 p.m., FS1) and resumes its Big Ten schedule against Penn State on Tuesday night at Xfinity Center. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The gamebreaker: At 235 pounds, Bo Scarbrough is the scariest Alabama back. He rushed for two scores against Clemson last time. But Damien Harris has done more damage this season. He’s averaged 8.2 yards per carry en route to 906 yards and 11 TDs.

Casting call for backs continues for Redskins

NFL Week 17 preview RUSHING TITLE CONTENDER

RB Le’Veon Bell, Steelers vs. Browns, 1 p.m. Sunday

He trails Todd Gurley (1,305 yards) by just 14 yards and Kareem Hunt by 1 yard in the race for the rushing title. The NFC West champion Rams are sitting Gurley, and Hunt may not play much for the AFC West-winning Chiefs.

Rookie Samaje Perine has assumed a featured role for the past six weeks and is the only active Redskins back who started the season on the roster.

Kelley, the starter to begin the season, rushed for 78 yards in the Week 2 win over the Rams but battled an ankle injury for weeks before joining Marshall on injured reserve in mid-November. After third-down specialist Thompson broke his right leg in the Nov. 19 overtime loss at New Orleans, the Redskins signed Byron Marshall off Philadelphia’s practice squad. A hamstring injury landed him on injured reserve Dec. 12. Washington’s running game is ranked 26th in the NFL — accounting for 92.5 yards per game. Heading into the regularseason finale at the Giants (2-13) on Sunday (1 p.m., Fox), the Redskins’ three backs are Perine,

Bibbs and Dare Ogunbowale, who was signed Dec. 12. Perine, a fourth-round draft pick from Oklahoma, took over as the lead back in the loss at New Orleans. He rushed for back-toback 100-yard games against the Saints and Giants but has failed to convert third-and-shorts in other games. Bibbs, 24, signed to the practice squad Nov. 24. He had a 36yard touchdown catch against the Cardinals and ran for 26 yards against Denver, his former team. “We have a lot of backs running around here,” Gruden said. “We just have got to probably figure out which two or three we really like moving forward.” LIZ CLARKE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

He led the league with 15.5 sacks in 2016 but enters Sunday with just four sacks this year. Atlanta can clinch a playoff berth with a win, and he’ll have to chase Cam Newton, who has run for at least 51 yards in four straight games.

ALEX BRANDON (AP)

NFL Evaluating players heading into free agency and the NFL draft is an inexact science. The challenge is compounded for teams that aren’t quite sure about the talent they already have. That describes the Redskins (7-8) as they wade into the pool of running backs expected to be available this offseason. Following an injury-hampered 2017 season in which eight backs have cycled through the roster — none making more than seven starts — do the Redskins have their starter in second-year player Rob Kelley or rookie Samaje Perine? Could preseason casualty Keith Marshall or lateseason signee Kapri Bibbs contend? Or do they need to upgrade? “There is something to like about all these guys,” coach Jay Gruden said “but from a consistent production standpoint other than Chris [Thompson], we didn’t get a lot of probably what we are looking for from any of those guys. Not to say they did poorly — but it’s just hard to evaluate them.” Marshall, a seventh-round pick out of Georgia in 2016, is on injured reserve after a knee injury in training camp derailed him for a second consecutive season.

A 2016 Chevy Silverado registered to Buccaneers wide receiver DeSean Jackson was abandoned after it crashed Sunday at a Tampa mall, according to police, who found legal hollow-point bullets and 6.3 grams of marijuana inside. Jackson’s representative said a friend had borrowed the vehicle, and the contents weren’t Jackson’s. (TWP)

Johnny Manziel cleared to play in Canada; Hamilton Tiger-Cats own his rights

vs. Jaguars, 4:25 p.m. Sunday

He’s taken a backseat to DeMarco Murray with just 26 total touches during a three-game losing streak. Tennessee can clinch a wild card with a victory, and he led a Week 2 win over the Jags with 14 carries for 92 yards and a TD.

FEAST OR FAMINE

QB Russell Wilson, Seahawks vs. Cardinals, 4:25 p.m. Sunday

He completed 46.7 percent of his passes in a blowout loss to the Rams and threw for only 93 yards in a win at Dallas. He’s still the best hope for Seattle, which can clinch a berth with a win and a Falcons loss. GABE HIATT (EXPRESS)

Must-Know Budgeting Tips for Your First Apartment H

ave no idea how to budget for your first apartment? Fear no more, the tips below will be a life saver.

Location Start with location. You won’t want to move somewhere that will drain you of your savings within a month’s time. Instead, move somewhere that is under your monthly income. Ideally, your rent should cost you about or less than 2 weeks’ pay, so keep that in mind. Also remember that, typically, the closer to the city you are, the more expensive it’s going to be. You will also want to bear in mind your daily commute to and from work from your new apartment. If you are considering job hunting, it is usually easiest to secure a job before you move. Remember, the longer your commute, the more you’ll have to pay for gas and/or public transportation, so if you find an apartment close to work, that’s more money in your pocket.

BUDGET TIP If you decide not to get cable, try alternates like Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Go, and even some TV networks have episodes available to watch on their websites.

Expenses Paying Upfront— When renting an apartment, people tend to pay a good amount of money up front. These fees include first month’s rent, security deposit, pet deposit (if you choose to have a pet), garbage services, gym memberships, lawn care, etc. Although a great deal of apartment complexes include these miscellaneous fees as part of the rent per month price, you should still be prepared to budget.

Buy things you NEED, not want—If you have a tight income, wait to buy anything you want until all your necessary expenses are paid for. Maybe you will have some left over money to either A) save or B) spend on things you want. Monthly Expenses—This includes reoccurring and one-time expenses. Re-occurring expenses include rent or mortgage, electric bill, gas bill, water bill, internet (if you choose to have it), cable (if you choose to have it), and renters’ insurance. Monthly Income—How much you can afford for living expenses, deposits, and other fees is based on how much you make. Subtract your monthly income from your monthly expenses, and whatever is left over is a little wiggle room money. A good suggestion: save the leftover money. Start two steps ahead on budgeting with the tips above. ■ By Victoria Naranjo for Apartment Showcase Photo: TaxRebate.org.uk

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST

2017’s wondrous women Women came pretty far in Hollywood this year. Not far enough, of course — they are still wildly underrepresented both on the big screen and off — but what I noticed was a broadening sense of what a “female character” is. They were more than girlfriends, wives, temptresses and saints (though those categories still dominate). And since that’s something to celebrate, I decided to invite my five favorite female characters of 2017 to a fictional dinner party for an inspiring chat about what each brought to the table this year.

Dorothea Fields

Marion McPherson

Diana

Valkyrie

Leia Organa

“20th Century Women”

“Lady Bird”

“Wonder Woman”

“Thor: Ragnarok”

“Star Wars: The Last Jedi”

As the mother of a son, I’d be interested in advice on how to raise him without strangling him even once. Annette Bening’s portrayal of a single mother to a teenage boy illuminated not only the generation gap that exists between parents and children, but also the gender gap between kids and their opposite-sex parent. While Dorothea and son Jamie (Lucas Jade Zumann) are at a tenuous point in their relationship, it’s pretty clear that she is still important to the teenager, who’s becoming a man but is always her little boy.

Marion (Laurie Metcalf) didn’t so much remind me of myself, but of my mom. Marion’s daughter, high school senior Christine (Saoirse Ronan), is selfish, smart, kind, needy and infuriating in the way that only 17-year-old girls can be. Marion helped me see sides of my mother I couldn’t when I was reminding her that I DIDN’T ASK TO BE BORN. “She doesn’t know how to help you,” Christine’s dad says — and I realized that the relationship my mom and I had when I was 17 was rocky because neither of us knew what we were doing.

There will probably be very little need for superheroics at my fictional dinner party. I want Diana of Themyscira (Gal Gadot) there anyway. She is comfortable storming across No Man’s Land — a moment that makes me tear up every time I see it — but also loves babies and ice cream. In movies, a woman is often recognized as strong because she has “overcome” her fondness for traditionally feminine things and has become more masculine. In contrast, Diana is both powerful and feminine — truly a wonder.

She’s a hilarious warrior who is here to drink alcohol and kick ass, and ... actually, she’ll never run out of alcohol. Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) will probably bring the tequila and be amazing at Cards Against Humanity, but she’s invited to the party because she IS a party. She can also get along with everyone — if you’re friends with the Hulk, you can be friends with anybody — and, after spending most of “Ragnarok” as one of the only women in a man’s world, she’d probably enjoy a little girl time.

When I was little, I insisted my mom do my hair in Leia’s signature doughnut/headphones style. Leia (Carrie Fisher) was always funny, smart and brave, but in the latest episodes of the “Star Wars” franchise — “Last Jedi” in particular — those qualities were not only more clearly recognized, but celebrated. Leia’s greatest talent, though, is that she does. Not. Stop. Through long odds, deep loss, unimaginable grief — no matter how down she is, never count Leia out. It’s wisdom every woman needs to hear.

AMC theaters remove ‘Star Wars’ warning signs

Disneyland restores power after brief outage

Signs posted at select AMC movie theaters that warned filmgoers about audio in a scene in “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” have been removed. “The sign was up at two of AMC’s 660 locations. It was removed last week before the media coverage began,” an AMC rep said Thursday in a statement to Entertainment Weekly. A photo of one of the signs, which tipped fans off to a moment in the film when the sound intentionally ceases for creative effect, circulated on social media this week. The signs were reportedly posted after the scene was criticized by some “Star Wars” fans. (EXPRESS)

Power was fully restored at Disneyland on Wednesday after an outage at the Southern California theme park forced some guests to be escorted from stalled rides. A transformer problem caused the late-morning outage in Toontown and Fantasyland, affecting 12 rides, park spokeswoman Suzi Brown said. Nobody was injured, and power was fully restored in the afternoon. While some wondered on social media if they would get refunds, guests are warned that all or part of the park may close without notice and tickets are nonrefundable in such cases. (AP)

‘Overboard’

‘Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again’

EXPECTED RELEASE: April 20

EXPECTED RELEASE: July 20

SUMMARY: In the remake we never knew we needed because we didn’t need it, the 1987 Goldie Hawn-Kurt Russell riches-to-rags story now stars Anna Faris and Eugenio Derbez. He’s rich and mean, she’s poor and also seems kind of mean, so let’s do this, I guess? Probably better to watch the original, playing nightly on TNT. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

SUMMARY: In the sequel we never knew we needed because we didn’t need it, ABBA takes its revenge by continuing the story from the 2008 movie. It continues it by going backward to the Meryl Streep character’s wanton youth (Streep is now played by Lily James, because why not). Also there is Cher, who arrives by helicopter because she’s Cher. This year brought us the story of a regular teen whose viral tweet got the most retweets of all time. Carter Wilkerson tried to get 18 million retweets in exchange for a year’s worth of Wendy’s chicken nuggets. He didn’t make it that far, but on May 9, his tweet reached 3.5 million retweets; it’s now the most retweeted tweet ever. Wendy’s gave Carter his nuggets and donated $100,000 to charity.

White Guy Blinking

Salt Bae

Incredulous, blinking, head-shaking. White Guy Blinking, which went viral in February but stuck around all year, tops a lot of “Best 2017 Memes” lists. He perfectly sums up how we felt a lot of the time. From “I don’t understand at all” to “Are you kidding me? It’s 2017 — is this really happening right now?” White Guy Blinking was there to empathize.

Salt Bae was one of the first major memes of 2017, if not the first. A video of Turkish chef Nusret Gokce sprinkling salt on freshly cut meat went viral in early January. It was the way he sprinkled the salt — with particular flair and flourish — that made the video entertaining to so many. Sprinkle this meme sparingly in your friends’ mentions.

Thinking Guy

Distracted Boyfriend

Szechuan sauce debacle

This meme, which went viral in late January and is colloquially known as Thinking Guy, is actually called “Roll Safe.” It’s used when giving bad life advice, such as, “You can’t be broke if you don’t check your bank account,” tweeted by @RyanWindoww. Typically, the construction is “[Something bad] can’t happen to you if you don’t…” But don’t take this meme’s word for it.

Distracted Boyfriend is the ultimate stock photo meme with endless permutations. This meme stands out because it can be fill-in-theblank, encouraging everyone to make their own. It clearly shows a girlfriend’s disgust at the way her boyfriend looks at another woman, but it can be used for pretty much anything. Maybe your job is the girlfriend, and the other woman is all the memes you’ve been looking at.

McDonald’s created a real-life and online fiasco when it brought back its 1998 Szechuan dipping sauce on Oct. 7 in extremely limited quantities after “Rick and Morty” fans spent a good part of 2017 harassing the fast-food company about it. McDonald’s apologized for not meeting demand and promised to bring back the sauce for real. We’re still waiting.

How to pronounce it? What does it mean? This tweet, which Trump sent out at 12:06 a.m. on May 31 (and later deleted), captivated the nation. Was it a typo? A secret message? Many have tried to figure it out, but the tweet really took on a life of its own when people made up their own interpretations. Like @travon, who tweeted, “Ask your doctor if Covfefe is right for you,” and @billyeichner, who tweeted: “When they go low, we covfefe.” RACHEL PODNAR (EXPRESS)

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) As the seconds tick by today, you’ll grow more concerned about something you’re going to have to face at day’s end. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You needn’t hide your excitement about a coming event — especially one that is so important to you personally. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Though someone may have made something of a mess of a situation of which he was in charge, you’ll have the chance today to set it right. ARIES (March 21-April 19) How you deliver the news to a loved one today will be one of the most important decisions you make. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) A family member is concerned about your current situation, but doesn’t want to intrude. He or she can be included today, however. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You’ll find a certain gravitational pull to be virtually irresistible today — and it will surely bring you closer to someone. CANCER (June 21-July 22) You are coming up with all sorts of reasons why something recently happened the way it did, but you’re overlooking the most likely — and obvious. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You are not in the mood to deal with the same old problems, but escape is not possible right now. You must deal with them head-on.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
