BRITISH IRISH CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2014

#BICCGST

INTRODUCTION The British Irish Chamber’s second annual conference will take place in Titanic, Belfast on 13th February 2014. This year’s theme is “Growing Stronger Together”, which will bring business and political communities together for a high profile event featuring significant industry contributors and relevant politicians from across the UK and Ireland. We bring this event to Belfast with the endorsement of key partners, including Invest Northern Ireland, UK Trade & Investment and NI Chamber of Commerce and the generous sponsorship of HSBC Ireland. HISTORY OF BRITISH IRISH CHAMBER The British Irish Chamber was established in 2011 and launched during the historic visit of HM Queen Elizabeth II to Ireland. The Chamber occupies a unique position across these islands, representing a combined British / Irish economic space estimated to be worth €52 billion per annum. 35% of total Irish exports are consumed in the British market, with Ireland being the fifth largest market for British exports. There is also a wider dimension to the British Irish relationship. Britain and Ireland are interlinked by longstanding geographic, cultural, historic and social and family ties, ties which have grown stronger as the respect and understanding between the two Islands continues to develop. The Chamber is seeking to build on these links and looks to become the focal point of the British / Irish business and economic community. To date the Chamber has registered over 200 member companies that collectively employ in excess of 55,000 people across these islands. The Chamber provides networking events, represents members at Senior Government level and fosters sector driven policy areas where members work collectively. The Chamber’s Board is formed from Council Members and currently includes representative of HSBC, CRH, Fyffes, Greencore, Oriel Windfarm, Lloyds and Diageo amongst others. The Chamber‘s CEO is Steve Aiken and Chairman is John Shine from Eircom. The Chamber‘s offices are based in 22-24 Lower Mount Street, Dublin 2. FIRST CONFERENCE The Chamber’s first conference was held at Aviva Stadium in January 2013 over two days and drew 35 speakers. Under the banner Gathering for Action it sought to develop the content of the March 2012 joint declaration by Prime Minister, David Cameron, and An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny. The conference was addressed by keynote speakers including Rt Hon Vince Cable MP and Rt Hon Carwyn Jones, First Minister of Wales. Industry was broadly represented with contributions on Food and Agribusiness, Energy, Life Sciences and SME. Minister for Department of Communications, Energy & Natural Resources, Pat Rabitte, and UK Secretary of State for Energy, Ed Davey, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Energy at the Conference. 2014 CONFERENCE Building on that first conference, plans are well developed for the second annual conference and confirmed key note speakers include Philip Dilley, Chairman, ARUP Group and Anna Malmhake, CEO, Irish Distillers Pernod Ricard. Additional contributors will include Martin Curley, Vice President, Intel; Matthew Knight, Head of UK Offshore, Siemens; Niall Gibbons, CEO, Tourism Ireland; Former Rugby International Trevor Ringland; Shona McCarthy, CEO, City of Culture; Joanne Hession ,CEO, QED Training; and Simon McKeever, CEO, Irish Exporters Association together with senior British and Irish politicians (security embargo applies at present). A Conference Dinner will take place in the City Hall on the evening before the Conference, 12th February 2013. Mark Nodder, CEO, Wright Bus and Chairman Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce will address the Conference Dinner at City Hall. The Conference programme starts with a speed networking breakfast for SMEs. Breakout sessions will focus on Energy, SME, International and Culture, Arts, Sports and Tourism.
