Mount Carmel Hospital to reopen The Health Service Executive (HSE), which bought the hospital for €11m, has announced that Mount Carmel hospital in Churchtown is to reopen. Mount Carmel will be used as part of the HSE Service Plan for 2015 for patients who no longer need acute care. This plan allows for 115 additional beds for transitional and rehabilitation services being provided across the Dublin area and Mount Carmel is to provide 65 of these beds. The site will be developed to enhance services to support both the acute hospitals and community services in the area. It is envisaged that short stay community beds, including step-down/step-up beds, assessment beds, transitional care beds and rehabilitation beds can be provided on the site. Given the original purpose of the building, the facility may also provide potential for the delivery of elective acute services for day procedures such as endoscopy and day surgery. The HSE has established a project advisory group to develop a design brief and oversee the development of the site. Neale at Mount Carmel Hospital. Not only was Neale born at this local hospital, he also worked there as a student for two summers.

Marlay parkrun The new route for the Marlay parkrun that was introduced in February, it is hoped that the new route might alleviate some of the traffic congestion on Grange Road on Saturday mornings. Additional parkruns will soon start at both Cabinteely and Shanganagh Park.
Glenalbyn Swimming Pool update In 2014, Dún Laoghaire Rathdown Councillors ring fenced €10million for a new swimming pool at Glenalbyn as the existing one had to be closed due to safety problems with the roof. The relevant Council Director committed to go away, liaise with local groups and give Councillors options with how to go forward. At the Council’s February meeting, the Director came back with four options. The Council has now set up a small working group of the very local Councillors including my colleagues Cllr Josepha Madigan and Cllr Barry Saul to look at the options and make a recommendation. This is a crucial time for the Glenalbyn project, there is a serious challenge in terms of the age profile of the area and the potential amount of use a new pool will get, it is vital that a new pool is sustainable. I am hopeful that a new pool can and will be built but there is a need to be prudent as there is a lot of money involved. If you would like a copy of the report presented by the Director, please email: neale.richmond@gmail.com
