Dear Resident,
Ruairí
The European Health Insurance Card is free and it means that you can get healthcare in the public system in all European countries all countries of the European Union as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland - if you become ill or injured while on a temporary stay there. One Card is needed for each member of a family. NOTE: You can only get an EHIC in Ireland if you are ordinarily resident in Ireland. This means you have been living here for a minimum of one year or that you intend to live here for a minimum of one year. You should apply for the European Health Insurance Card if you plan to holiday, regularly visit, work, or study in Europe. To obtain healthcare with the card, go to the nearest public system doctor, public hospital, or other public treatment centre and present your card. See the www.ehic.ie website for details of services available in each EU State. You don’t need a European Health Insurance Card to get necessary healthcare while on a temporary visit to the UK. It is enough to show proof that you are ordinarily resident in Ireland – in practice, this means a driving licence, passport or similar document. You will receive your card within 10 working days of receipt of your application. Once issued, this card will be valid for 4 to 5 years; simply be sure you and your family's cards are valid before you travel. If applying by post, applications should be made to the address below at least 1 month before travelling and you need to include each person’s Personal Public Service number on the form.
