Leanne steps up
The Olympic torch is coming your way on the 2nd July at 14.22 She is at the centre of the child sex grooming allegations in Corby on Weldon Road
This is the woman at the centre of the child sex grooming allegations in Corby. Leanne Mape, a 27 year old mother, claims that she was sexually abused by a number of Asian and white men from the age of eleven until the age of fifteen. She has now made a formal complaint the Independent Police Complaints Commission that Northamptonshire Police failed to investigate her claims properly. She also wants the actions of local Social Services’ officials be looked into because she was on the “at risk” list at the time she was a victim of alleged systematic sexual abuse. “I was child at the time I was abused, but no one appeared to care,” said Leanne. “I was on the at risk list because I was considered vulnerable. I should have been protected.” A medical report when she was 14 states she had been subjected to “systemic sexual abuse by a number of individuals over two to three years.” Leanne has decided to publicise her case because one of her alleged abusers has become prominent in the community. “He is considered to be a pillar of society, but I believe people should know about his past and what he did,” said Leanne. Leanne, who has set up a self-help group for abuse victims in the area called We Stand Together, admits that she was a very vulnerable and “mixedup” 11 year old. “I was taken advantage of by men who saw me as a sex object and passed me round,” she added. “As a child I was let down by a lot of people, including the police and social services.” A women’s group, led by Khatija Barday-Wood, is supporting Leanne’s fight for justice.
SUPPORTING LEANNE: Sister Sabrina (left) there to support Leanne She told the Extra: “The grooming of young girls in Corby, or anywhere else, should not be swept under the carpet. The perpetrators and victims are not necessarily people from one community. “Many victims stay silent because they are terrified to come into the open because of the adversity that it would create for them and their family members.” Khatija, whose organisation, “Eiman,” assists women from all walks of life facing difficulties, urged others in the area who had suffered similar abuse to come forward. “One wonders how many cases have been swept under the carpet,” she added. A spokesman for the IPCC confirmed that a complaint had been made on Leanne’s behalf and that it was being investigated.
Northamptonshire Police have launched a support scheme for people in Corby who feel vulnerable and would like someone to talk to help boost their confidence or feel safer. The scheme by the force’s Corby Safer Community Team is aimed across the community for people who feel a regular visit from a police community support officer would help them. To help get the project off the ground all local councillors have been contacted asking if they know of anyone in their ward who could benefit. PCSO Helen Murray, who is leading the initiative, says that aim is to build trust and confidence in the community and protect those most vulnerable. “This could cover anyone from elderly residents, persons who are disabled, have learning disabilities, mental health issues or hate crimes,” says PCSO Murray.
CROWDS are expected to turn out in their thousands next week to see the Olympic Torch make its way through our towns. Since it started its journey at Land’s End on May 19, the torch has clocked up hundreds of miles, taking a route has been devised to take the torch to within an hour of 95 per cent of people in the UK over 70 days. Its journey will culminate in its arrival at the Olympic Stadium on July 27 for the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics. On Monday, July 2, the torch will set off from Northampton towards Wellingborough and from there, travel through Isham to Kettering before moving on to Geddington and then Corby, from where it will leave the county and finish the day’s journey in Leicester. For details of the torch’s route, and some of the stories behind the county’s involvement in the relay, turn to Page 10.

Member for Housing, Cllr Bob Eyles, said: “Being over half way through our third and final sheltered housing scheme in our capital programme is very exciting news and I look forward to seeing the end result. “It is our priority to make residents comfortable and at home and the council’s supporting housing accommodation scheme has been just the thing WELL READ: Amy Foster is seeing books of her first novel soar on Amazon we needed to make this happen. > Kettering General Hospital INFECTION control is working at Kettering General Hospital, where statistics show further inroads into the battle against bugs. Only one case of MRSA was recorded during 2011-12, below the national target of no more than two. This is the second year running that KGH has had only one case in a year – after previously going for a period of 20 months without any infection of this kind. There have been 37 Trustattributed Clostridium difficile
cases – five below a nationally set target for the Trust of having no more than 42 in 2011-2012 and a reduction of 33 per cent from 2010-2011. There has also been a marked year on year reduction in C diff for the past five years. To continue the battle against infection, hundreds of new soap, hand sanitiser and hand moisturiser dispensers are being put in across the hospital. The new dispensers have been supplied to KGH free of charge by the company who supplies the hand hygiene products. The
advantage over the previous dispensers is that their shape means they are easier to clean and maintain. The new dispensers will be used in the hospital’s £30m Foundation Wing – due to open this summer – along with new highlighted hand hygiene hubs that guide you towards sinks and sanitising dispensers before entering wards. A new design of child friendly dispensers have also been supplied to the hospital to encourage children to clean their hands.
> Brooke Weston A 14-YEAR-OLD has published her first book and is now notching up sales on Amazon. Amy Foster who is in Year 9 at Brooke Weston in Corby took around six months to write Sounds of Change and Evolution - Almost Legal, a science fiction story detailing the adventures of college student Sara. Amy submitted the book for publication with Amazon company createspace and they have now listed the title for sale at £5 with free delivery. Amy has already written a second book in the series, Sickening Illness,
and plans to release that in the next few months. She has already sold some copies of Almost Legal and earns royalties on each sale. Amy said: “I read a lot of science fiction and my favourite author was Douglas Adams. I didn’t plan Almost Legal but just had a couple of ideas in my head and went with those. There were a couple of times when I had no inspiration and didn’t write for days or weeks and then would come back and write almost every day. “I knew I had come to the end of the book because everything seemed to be tying up.”

Project looks set to deliver target income
NEWS: 01536 384616
Controversial regeneration project set for happy outcome > Kingswood THE Kingswood regeneration project, which has delivered 146 new homes within the Borough, is now closer to also delivering on its targeted income for Corby Borough Council. With the project near to completion, house sale income and possible costs being offset could now result in a receipt to the Borough Council close to, and possibly over, its original estimate of £2.2million. The Council has, in the past
been criticised by the Audit Commission over its handling of the project, but all may be well financially upon its completion, giving the residents of Kingswood a new community they can be proud of and the Borough Council a much-welcomed financial boost. Leader of the Council, Cllr Tom Beattie, said: ‘With the attention surrounding the Kingswood project it is important to remember the fantastic regeneration that has been undertaken in the estate. I can, however, assure residents that we have
tightened our control of the project and discussions are ongoing over the project costs. “The project has greatly improved the area, giving residents much-needed modern, affordable homes and building the first new council homes in Corby for close to 40 years. On top of providing improvements to the Kingswood estate we are very pleased that there is now the distinct possibility that we will achieve our £2.2million receipt, which would of course be a very welcome financial boost to the Council.”

PM urged to give rail plan red light > Corby PRIME Minister David Cameron has pledged to listen to the arguments for upgrading Corby, Kettering and Wellingborough’s main rail link to London and the North. He was responding to the call for the £500m Midlands Mainline electrification project to get the go ahead, which was made at Westminster by Kettering MP Philip Hollobone. Mr Cameron said: “There is a large amount of support for the Midland Mainline electrification and the decision will depend on whether it is affordable and on assessing competing priorities, but I will listen very carefully, as I know the Treasury will too, to what he says.” Campaigners say that electrification of the line, which links Kettering, Corby and Wellingborough to London St Pancras, is the investment
key to economic growth. And the Government is set to make a decision on whether it will be included in Network Rail’s investment schedule for 2014 to 2019 next month. Speaking in a Westminster debate Mr Hollobone said: “In recent years, some £12 billion has been spent on the rail network, but only £200m has been spent on the Midland Mainline. “Ours is very much this country’s overlooked line, even though we connect so many places of importance.” He said there was a strong case to be made for the upgrading, describing the route as “the slowest of any inter-city lines.” He said passenger numbers had increased by 127 per cent over the past 15 years and a further 28 per cent rise was expected over the next decade. Upgrading would deliver £450m of economic benefits to the region.

Family and friends say farewell to James > Corby
THE funeral of Corby soldier Lance Corporal James Ashworth, who died in Afghanistan on June 13, is expected to be held next week. Lance Corporal Ashworth, 23, died in a grenade blast while on patrol with the Reconnaissance Platoon of 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards, in the Nahre Saraj district of Helmand province, Afghanistan. Last week, his family and friends were at RAF Brize Norton to see his body flown back to the UK. James joined the Army in 2006 when he was 17, joining the Nijmegen Company Grenadier Guards and completed a stint of ceremonial duty in London. He then joined Guards’ Parachute Platoon, part of 3rd Battalion The Parachute Regiment and The Queen’s Company before moving across to the Reconnaissance Platoon. Lance Corporal Ashworth came from a strong line of soldiering: his father was a Grenadier, and one of his brothers, Coran aged 21, is currently serving with the Army in Northern Ireland. Lance Corporal Ashworth’s family paid the following tribute: “We are devastated by the loss of our son, brother, uncle and boyfriend. He meant the world to everyone and has left an irreplaceable hole in our hearts. “We ask that we are given time to

Steve sings a Artist's talent on show song of Corby Solo exhibition celebrates Jim’s talents
> The Core A SONG about life in Corby has been penned by a musician who has returned to the town. Singer and songwriter Steve Rigsby’s work It’s Great to see Corby Come Alive is now on his playlist at venues across the town including The Cafe Con Leche, Knight’s Lodge, Hazel Tree and Kingfisher.
ON SONG: Steve Rigsby has written a song about Corby
The former Lodge Park School student is also hosting a monthly lunchtime acoustic showcase at The Core. Steve is hoping that at the next session in the B2 Cafe on Friday, July 6 from 12.45pm there will be fresh faces in the audience who are keen to hear his latest song. “The song is written from the perspective of someone who has come and gone from Corby and come back to see just how amazing the town has become,” said Steve. “I lived through Corby’s dark times of the eighties and nineties and busked most of the nineties in the town centre and used to cheer people up and used to talk to the older people and take an interest in them and they bought me sweets, tea and fingerless gloves for the winter.” For more details about the showcase, which welcomes input from other singers, contact the Core on 01536 470470 or visit www. thecorecorby.com

CORBY’S new art gallery is showcasing the work of an 85-year-old artist who was a driving force behind the campaign to see it open. Jim Lockhart’s solo exhibition is open for viewing at the Rooftop Gallery & Workshops above Boots in Corby town centre until Saturday, June 30. Corby Artists Network (CAN) felt it would be fitting to invite Jim to be the first to showcase his work. The retired draughtsman moved to Corby from Scotland and, like many others, has made the town his home.
Paula Boulton, who chairs CAN and another CAN member Martin Steed have created a film about Jim’s life including his time as a Bevin Boy, during the Second World War, which will be running during the exhibition. There will also be photos from the Stories of Steel exhibition showing the Corby Jim, and many others like him, came to. As a Bevin Boy down the mines in the Second World War he knew all about safety at work and was a lifelong trade unionist so there will also be extracts from the recent Workers’ Memorial Day exhibition sponsored by GMB showing images of the campaign by

> Business Academy ENTERPRISING students from Corby Business Academy have raised more than £500 to help fund a trip to Uganda. Year 11 students Ellie Moore and Amber Garrett organised a fancy dress disco to raise cash for the annual trip to Uganda by a team from the Academy. Teacher Kim Isaksen, who will be attending the international conference at the Discovery Centre in October with Ellie and Sixth Form student Klaudia Chalubinska, said: “Fancy dress ranged from punk to rock and roll and even included our own team of CBA police officers who were keen to dish out fines for unfortunate outfits and other misdemeanours. “A great night was had by all and we would like to say a huge thank you to all of the staff, sixth formers, family and friends who supported it.” Over the past six months the Uganda fundraising team, has raised more than £2,000 by running events including cake stalls, a race night, selling fortune cookies and Valentine’s hearts and roses. ANOTHER milestone in the construction of the new Corby Urgent Care Centre has taken place with a topping out ceremony to mark the completion of the structure of the building. The new Urgent Care Centre will bring together the existing Lakeside Plus walk-in services and minor injuries unit into one place for Corby people. Phase 1 of the development will also see enhanced facilities for the 8-8 service, with the new building set to open in late 2012. The new centre will bring a range of benefits to patients including a single point of access to urgent care services, reducing the need for patients to travel to A&E. There will also be a range of diagnostics including an x-ray department with extended opening hours and short-term observation bays - again so patients do not need to travel to a hospital for these services. The project is a partnership between NHS Corby Clinical Commissioning Group, NHS Milton Keynes and Northamptonshire, Lakeside Surgery and Corby Borough Council, with Kier Construction undertaking the building

work. Dr Peter Wilczynski, Interim Chair of NHS Corby CCG, said: “This is a major milestone for the Urgent Care Centre. With the structure completed, it now means we can get on with fitting out the inside ready for opening later in the year. The Urgent Care Centre is vital as the first stage of the development of the Willowbrook Health Complex, giving Corby people the high-quality healthcare services they deserve in the town.” Leader of Corby Borough Council, Cllr Tom Beattie, said: “‘Work is progressing quickly on Corby’s new Urgent Care Centre and we are pleased to see the building rise from the ground and begin to take shape. We are now another step closer to providing our community with important health care right on their doorstep which is something all partners can be proud of.” Sean Yeo, contracts director for Kier Construction said: “With the building structure now complete and watertight, the project team are very much looking forward to delivering this stunning facility in the late summer.” The construction is due to be completed in late summer, with the centre due to open later in the year.
Mrs Isaksen said: “The students have worked exceptionally hard to juggle their studies with the huge amount of work this trip has involved so far. They should be extremely proud of their efforts.” Any money raised over the £3,000 total will go towards buying books for the Discovery Centre library that was established by last year’s visiting group.

ON DUTY: The air cadets provided VIP escort duties on the day of the Queen’s visit
Air cadets take away some happy memories
FLAGS GALORE: Thousands thronged the streets to greet Her Majesty
> Corby
FIT FOR A QUEEN: The Queen was entertained by local singers in The Core and unveiled a plaque to mark her visit
HER Majesty’s visit provided Corby’s Air Training Corps Squadron with a host of happy memories. The 422 (Corby) Squadron ATC were invited by Corby Borough Council to assist with VIP escort duties, opening doors to The Cube for Her Majesty and assisting in the unveiling of the commemorative plaque outside The Cube. The Air Cadets on show represented a broad spectrum of Corby’s youth and Her Majesty the Queen indicated to Norman Stronach, Acting Chief Executive of Corby Borough Council, that the Air
Cadets looked very smart. Some cadets spoke to The Queen, with others appearing on TV and giving radio interviews. Paul Goult, Democratic Services Manager for Corby Borough Council told the Squadron leaders: “Your cadets were terrific. A great advertisement for the Air Cadets and Corby”. He said that they would be very happy to use the Air Cadets for any future events. 422 (Corby) Squadron is currently recruiting young people between 13 and 17 years old. Visit www.422CorbyATC. co.uk or email 422@aircadets.org for more information. The Squadron meets every Monday and Thursday from 7pm.

Councillor Andrew Grant, Northamptonshire County Council’s cabinet member for education, learning and skills, said: “This report confirms that our approach to working with young people in the youth justice system does get results. We have a team working hard to support those young people and help them tackle and overcome the challenges that originally drew them towards crime and antisocial behaviour. “The positive inspection is a testament to the work of the many organisations, local community groups and individuals who work with or alongside the YOT in supporting some of the most challenging and vulnerable young people in the county and equipping them with the skills and experience to turn their lives round.”

Beating diabetes > County A NEW service has been introduced to the county that will assess people’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The diabetes risk check identifies those with Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT), and aims to prevent it from developing into type 2 diabetes - which is a high risk for those with IGT. The service is jointly commissioned by NHS Nene Clinical Commissioning Group and NHS Corby Clinical Commissioning Group, who are taking over respon-
sibility for purchasing health services for the county from NHS Northamptonshire from 1 April 2013. Dr Matthew Davies, long term conditions lead for NHS Nene Clinical Commissioning Group, said: "The new diabetes risk check programme will identify those aged 40-74 who are 'at risk' of developing diabetes. It is estimated that this new health check will identify around 542 patients per year. The new service is available in the community as well as at GP practices.

to deliver enterprise Consider deferring Centre scheme from Business School Expert advice available > County TOP rate tax payers should consider taking action now to take full advantage of the reduction of the top rate in the Chancellor's most recent Budget, say tax experts at Moore Stephens Chartered Accountants. The top rate was reduced from 50 per cent to 45 per cent, to take effect from 6 April 2013. Where possible, taxpayers currently caught by the 50 per cent rate should consider deferring income until the 2013/14 tax year. Owner-managers, for instance, can defer the declaration of dividends until after 5 April 2013 and thus reduce their effective tax rate from 36.11 per cent to 30.6 per cent. From the other perspective, tax rate cuts and increases in allowances such as the news that the personal al-
lowance is to rise to £9,205 from April 2013 - have to be funded and so George Osborne announced a new limit on all currently uncapped income tax reliefs from that date. The amount of relief that can be claimed will be limited to the greater of £50,000 or 25 per cent of the taxpayer’s annual income. Reliefs that are already limited, such as Enterprise Investment Scheme and Venture Capital Trusts, will not be affected, but other reliefs, such as Gift Aid, qualifying loan interest and loss reliefs, will almost certainly be caught. For full details of how these changes could affect your personal tax liability, contact Philip Walding at Moore Stephens Chartered Accountants on 01536 461900, email philip.walding@ moorestephens.com or via Twitter @ PhilipWalding or visit the website www. moorestephens.co.uk

Other torch bearers include McDonalds worker Amy Mcdyre from Corby, teacher Barbara Crowther from Geddington, John Doran from Geddington, Kathy Randall from Wellingborough and Nicola Kenton from Rushden. Des Barber spent 15 years working to set up Corby Radio and, as manager, he now uses this platform to raise the profile of local charities, such as Lakelands Hospice. These are just some of the local people involved, and in turn, they are just some of the 8,000 torch bearers who were chosen to see the Olympic Torch Relay safely through more than 1,000 cities, towns and villages in the UK. The Flame route has been devised to take the torch to within an hour of 95 per cent of people in the UK, the Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey during the 70-day relay. It will enable local communities to shine a light on the best their area has to offer. The towns and cities hosting evening celebrations, the island visits, and all of the communities on route.
Students have a vital role > Tresham College A GROUP of students have been asked to help steward part of the east Northamptonshire leg of the Olympic torch relay. The second year students from Tresham’s BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Unformed Public Services will be working with security firm G4S as part of the Bridging the Gap project. The students have completed two qualifications during their second year: Level 2 Understanding Stewarding at Spectator Events and the Level 2 Award in Door Supervision. The Bridging the Gap project aims to address the shortages in the security industry and has been aimed at students in further education colleges across the country. The courses aim to ensure that students are equipped with all the skills and knowledge they need to enjoy the experience of helping to de-
liver a safe and secure Games. Uniformed Public Services Tutor, Clive Skingsley, helped Tresham students to co-ordinate work through G4S, the company who are responsible for the security at the Olympics. As part of the process, students have had to undergo interviews at Upton Park in London. Around half of the group who have undertaken the training have been interviewed and offered places to be part of this once-in-a-lifetime event. Mr Skingsley said:”This was a great opportunity for our students to take part in this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Hopefully it will allow some of them to kick start a career in an industry they might not have originally thought of, and the skills they have learnt already will also allow them to improve their overall employability chances once they have completed the course this summer.”

Towns get ready to celebrate two wheels Council message is to get on your bike > County EVENTS in Corby and Kettering are next in the scheme that will this summer encourage people to choose two wheels over four. The joys and benefits of cycling are being showcased in a summer-long festival organised by Northamptonshire County Council, with partners. A number of cycle themed events will take place as part of the Summer of Cycling, including the Corby Celebration of
Cycling on Saturday, June 30 including displays and demonstrations at The Cube, followed by Wicksteed's Wonderful Wheeled Weekend on August 4 and 5. Cllr Andre Gonzalez De Savage, county council cabinet member for infrastructure and public protection, said: “The Summer of Cycling is all about celebrating all that’s good about cycling and the huge amount of benefits it brings, from health and wellbeing to the environmental advantages. “Cycling is also a very cheap mode of transport and travelling
by bike can hugely reduce commuting costs for many. “What this festival does is demonstrate how easy it is to get into cycling and taking those first few steps into using it as a method of travel. “Members of the public are encouraged to bring their bikes along to each of the events to take part in a range of activities with the chance to win some great prizes.” For a complete list of events go to www.northamptonshire.gov. uk/SummerofCycling

The Third Man A letter from Corby Council Leader Tom Beattie To The Editor, After reading Corby/Tesco cash-flow by The Third Man last week (Wednesday 13th June) I felt like I needed to address the inaccuracies in the article. Can I begin by confirming that Corby Borough Council has not lost control of spending as the article would su gest. Our budget has been signed off by the District Auditor and the Council finds itself in a healthy position. In regards to the projects highlighted in the article we are fully aware that there has been certain issues su rounding some of the Council’s projects, however these are old issues and there has been a clear change in the way these projects are being handled to rectify these situations. You are correct in stating that the Council has been criticised for some part of the handling of the Kingswood project however I would like to point out that the Kingswood project is near completion and house sale income and possible costs being offset could now result in a receipt to the Borough Council close to, and possibly over, its original estimate of £2.2million. Therefore this all looks positive in giving the residents of Kingswood a new community they can be proud of and the Borough Council a much welcomed financial boost. We would also like the comments that are stated as to have come from the District Auditor in an apparent view of the Corby Cube building to be rebutted. There has been no report completed as of yet by The Audit Commission. It is disappointing that The Queen’s visit, which was an absolute success with thousands turning out and showing the ‘true spirit of Corby’, was used in the article. The visit is just one of many things that Corby is achieving and can be proud of, including: • The new A43 Link Road that started on site last week • Our new 6 screen cinema is soon to start constrution. • The addition of new homes to several sites across the Borough, providing new communities in Oakley Vale, Little Stanion, Priors Hall and more. • The third refurbishment project on our sheltered accommodation nearing completion. • A new application for 21 new, modern homes in Kingswood • Our Urgent Care Centre that is soon to open its doors. • The Tesco Regeneration Partnership that just a couple of weeks ago, the Council, Tresham and the Job Centre signed up to to help long term unemployed back to work. • The Olympic Torch travelling through the Borough on 2nd July. Yours Sincerely Cllr Tom Beattie, Leader of Corby Borough Council

Comment AS COUNCIL LEADER, part of Cllr Beattie’s role is to promote Corby and he is entitled to paint a glossy picture of the town and its development. But he, along with his colleagues, also has a responsibility, as custodian of ratepayers’ money, to conduct the council’s business with transparency and openness. Cllr Beattie in his letter to “The Extra,” following an article on the council’s finances, says he “needed to address the inaccuracies in the article,” particularly that “the council had lost control of spending.” Cllr Beattie states categorically: “Can I begin by confirming that Corby Borough Council has not lost control of spending, as the article would suggest. Our budget has been signed off by the District Auditor and the council finds itself in a healthy position.” This statement may raise eyebrows in certain quarters, as the council has total debts in the region of £38 million (well above the government’s recommended figure) and there were repeated delays in the accounts being signed off --- but only in part. The district auditor’s reports on the Cube development, the Tesco land sale (of which more later) and the Rockingham Triangle project are still outstanding. Cllr Beattie accuses the article of racking over “old issues” after admitting that “there has (sic) been certain issues surrounding some of the council’s projects.” With respect, they are not old issues. The Cube, some £12 million over budget, still has underlying structural fault and safety issues which need to be remedied and, as yet, has not been granted a building certificate. Not to mention where the money will come from for long-term future maintenance. Concerns relating to the Kingswood housing development only arose in January this year---six months ago. Cllr Beattie has the good grace to admit that the council has been criticised for “some part” of the handling of the project. However, in adopting an optimistic tone about the future of the Kingswood development, he is very careful in his use of words. He writes: “…the Kingswood project is near com-
pletion and house sale income and possible costs being offset could now result in a receipt to the Borough Council close to, and possibly over, its original estimate of £2.2 million.” Cllr Beattie’s use of “possibly” and “could” show a distinctive lack of clarity and could be interpreted as showing that the council has no idea what the final figures will be. In relation to the Cube, Cllr Beattie states that “there has been no report completed as of yet by the Audit Commission.” He is correct. The scathing criticisms of the Cube project were made in an internal report, endorsed and signed by his Labour colleague who is chair of the council’s Overview and Scrutiny Committee. If the criticism is that strong from his fellow councillors then the independent District Auditor’s comments are likely to make extremely interesting reading. But Cllr Beattie in his letter appears to deliberately ignore any reference to the revelation that the council’s coffers could have been swelled by several million pounds over the sale of a piece at Soothill, as part of the Tesco site. The council owned plot was sold for a little over £82,000 without restriction in 2010. It now forms part of the Tesco site. A subsequent independent valuation of the land in 2011 produced a base price tag of £4 million and an upper figure of £8 million on the granting of planning permission. Supporting this valuation was the sale of an adjoining piece of land needed for the Tesco development for a guaranteed minimum figure of £774,000 an acre, valuing it at £3.5 million. So why was the 11 or so acres of council owned land sold for such a paltry £82,031? Who authorised the sale of such a valuable council asset and why for so little, having regard to the council’s parlous amount of debt? Asked why he had not addressed the land sale in his letter, Cllr Beattie said that it was “a complicated story and things are not black and white.” He added that the council was “acutely aware of some of issues surrounding different valuations of the land.” Just as well, as Corby ratepayers must be wondering what is going on within the council offices.
Concerns over finances raised with the government by Tory councillor ERIC PICKLES, the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, has been briefed on the financial turbulence which has over shadowed the council in recent months by Conservative leader, David Sims. “This is the second meeting I have had with the Secretary of State where I have brought the finances of the borough to his attention,” said Cllr Sims. “These are very serious issues and raise a great deal of concern.” In his meetings Cllr Sims has spoken about the problems surrounding redevelopment and regeneration in the
town where budgetary controls appear to have been lax or non-existent. The Secretary of State has power of intervention where there is evidence of financial impropriety in the administration of a local council’s affairs. In 2010 Mr Pickles directly intervened in the running of Doncaster Council appointing three commissioners to oversee the council’s operations. Said Cllr Sims: “The Secretary of State indicated he was aware of the problems in Corby, but was waiting for the report of the District Auditor before taking any action, if necessary.”

A captivating chanteuse, a rabble-rousing entertainer and theatrical fashion chameleon, Faith’s debut album, ‘Do You Want the Truth, or Something Beautiful?’ remains a glossy collection of retro-soul and sassy pop. From the brass-blasted stomp of ‘Stone Cold Sober’, to the epic sweep of her biggest chart hit ‘New York’, the record went on to sell over half a million copies, earning Faith a nomination for Best British Female at the Brit Awards and the honour of closing the 2011 ceremony singing with Cee-Lo Green. At the behest of Chaka Khan, Faith performed ‘I’m
Every Woman’ in front of 50,000 people. Now as Faith flips the page and writes the next chapter of her story, this Hackney-born girl is keen to express a new level of intimacy with her music. On her new, second album ‘Fall To Grace’, she’s made the decision to strip herself emotionally bare. ‘At the beginning I wanted to do something that was more of a performance and I still have that element because it is part of me,’ she explains, ‘but I feel like where I’ve been most successful is when I’ve just relaxed and been myself. I feel totally, wholeheartedly behind this album. I feel like it belongs to me and I belong to it.’ It does. www.palomafaith.com

Garden Weddings A THEMED wedding is a great way to wow your guests and put your personal stamp on the whole event. It’s not surprising then that with their inexpensive, versatile and eco friendly nature, garden weddings are here to stay. A marquee can be both elegant and practical. With 2012 being a Jubilee year, bunting has made a huge comeback and is the perfect way to adorn your reception or wedding venue. As with most things it’s all in the detail and nothing says this more than the classic and simple 'Just Married' bunting from The Last Detail which looks fantastic and is perfect for decorating the venue, the bride and groom's car, the bridal suite or the happy couples' home on return from their honeymoon. It’s traditional for the bride and groom to exchange gifts around the time of the wedding so when choosing something for the lucky lady why not incorporate this season’s crystal trend into your gift with a stunning statement bracelet made with a multitude of Swarovski crystals. Each eye-catching icicle shaped drop is hand linked onto Sterling silver chain by Gift Wrapped and Gorgeous.
The Garden Theme with its sense of nature and the environment has versatility at its heart. Be dierent! Ask your guests to give you a garden! The Wedding Garden Company encourages you to have plants, trees and garden-related products, and even designs, as wedding presents. Your guests will be entranced by the thought of giving you a beautiful rose, a fragrant honeysuckle or a spectacular tree. You can then continue to enjoy these souvenirs of your wedding for years to come as they grow and blossom with your marriage! Another current trend is to light the tables and garden shrubs with natural candlelight. Why not light up a big tree by using dozens of Redlily’s tea light holders? Recycle them later to hang in the garden or around the house this summer and for dinner parties later in the year; just a couple of many dierent methods you could use to create that air of romance on your special occasion. Lastly, no wedding would be complete without the all-important cake but why not buck the tradition and oer your guests delicate, handmade wedding cupcakes instead, displayed on this beautiful tiered cake stand by The Last Detail.

EXTRA PEOPLE A WEIGHT loss expert from Kettering has struck gold for the exceptional work she does in helping more than 280 people in the area to lose weight every week. Jayne, who runs the Balance Health Club Slimming World groups every week, was presented with a Gold Award at the national slimming club’s annual awards ceremony in Birmingham on June 16th because of her success in supporting slimmers to reach their dream weight. The accolade is awarded in recognition of achieving the highest levels of support for slimmers, and giving expert advice to help the people of Kettering reach their weight loss goals week after week.
PRESENTATION: Jayne Chambers and chair Margaret Miles-Bramwell OBE (centre) and Roberto Enrieu - 2009 Man of the year 2010 who lost 25.5 stone Jayne says: “I am delighted to have received the Gold Award. I love my job, I’m passionate about helping people to change their lives by losing weight and seeing them succeed is reward enough so being given this recognition really is the icing on the cake. “It’s not just a triumph for me though, this award belongs to my 120+ members too. They make the group a fun, buzzy place to be and I can safely say I always look forward to going to work. I truly believe I have the best job in the world. “The Balance Health Club group has really put healthy weight loss on the map in Kettering. Together, they’ve lost an amazing 400 stone this year so far. Obesity is at record levels everywhere and with 43 per cent of adults in Kettering being affected, many people here are suffering a range of weight-related health problems from diabetes to heart problems and feelings of low selfworth that impact on their working and personal lives every day. So anything that helps people to lose weight by adopting healthy eating habits and becoming more active is making a difference – both to themselves and future generations of children, too.” The group, which is meets every Wednesday at 4pm, 5.30pm and 7.15 pm at Balance Health Club, either pop along or give Jayne a call on 0791 262 8191.

"Gerard Pique would join me in the centre of defence, and up front would be Ronaldo, Gomez and Messi. That team would see Corby up the league."
Ian Sampson
Ian Sampson talks to Luke Manning on how he is now setting his sights on rejuvenating the fortunes of Corby Town FC. With a glittering football playing career behind him as a central defender for Northampton, Sunderland and Tottenham, and a managerial CV that includes a spellbinding triumph over Liverpool at Anfield, You always want to be a footballer when you grew up? I was always interested in football when I was young but my first ambition was to be a joiner. My uncle was a builder and joiner and I wanted to be like him, but by the time I was 15 or 16 I knew then I wanted to be a footballer. Were you a better joiner or footballer? Footballer by a long shot. I left school and worked for the council for a year on a joinery course, and it just wasn’t for me. When was that moment when you thought 'I've made it' as a player? I was a non-league player for five years, and played for Bridlington Town and Goole Town, before I was scouted by Sunderland and signed for them at the age of 21. Once you sign for a club like Sunderland, you feel like you’ve made it. But in reality it was my first league game in 1990 when I really began to make my mark.
Can you remember your debut well? Of course. That’s the sort of thing you don’t forget. It was at home at Roker Park against Brighton and we won 4-2. It should have been 5 – I had a goal disallowed. Why Corby Town? It just feels like a good fit. They liked my experience with Northampton Town as both a player and a manager, and the club matched my ambition to start from scratch and build something. It potentially has a chance to be a good team, especially if we can attract more of the fans that travel through Corby – from both England and Scotland. Describe Corby Town FC. It’s an ambitious club with a great fan base, and one that can be a massive part of the community and grow into a top level non-league club. If money was no object, what would your dream team be? Joe Hart would have to be in goal, with Gerard Pique joining me in the centre of defence. Ashley Cole and Danny Alves would be the wing backs, and I’d have Xavi, Iniesta and Alonso in the midfield. Up front would be Ronaldo and Gomez, and of course Messi.
That team would see Corby up the league. What's your favourite place in the world? Florida. We’ve had some great family holidays there and every time you go back you find something different. The place has got it all – good weather, nice golf courses and something to keep all the family interested. DeNiro or Pacino? It’s got to be DeNiro. He’s done the best films overall and I love Cape Fear. What's been your favourite sporting moment over the years? On a personal level it was winning at Wembley with Northampton Town as a player, or beating Liverpool at Anfield with Northampton as a manager. In the wider world it was actually cricket, when England won the Ashes under Michael Vaughan Favourite food and drink? A glass of Sauvignon Blanc and a Chinese. What do you do in your free time? Free time? I don’t really have any free time. But if I can find any, I like to play golf or go to the theatre. Are you any good at golf? I can hold my own. I’ve got a handicap of 11.
What’s been your golfing career highlight? There hasn’t been one yet. Who has Roy Hodgson left out of his England squad that he shouldn't have? I don’t think he’s left anyone out of the squad. They’ve gone down the route of selecting people that have played for the under 21s, and moved them up to the main team. It’s a trait of the Spanish teams and they’re not doing badly at the moment. Is being a modern football manager now just a merry-goround that stops when, rather than if, you get sacked? Fifty percent of all first time managers never get another job, so it’s not quite the merry-goround where you just walk from one job into another. It’s stressful. You know that unless you are Sir Alex Ferguson or Arsene Wenger that as soon as you start the job that you’re going to get the sack. But it’s a passion. You can’t help it. And finally... if you could be invisible for the day, what would you do? I’d go to an England training session and watch Roy Hodgson work. It would be great to watch how he coaches the team and pick up a few tips.

EXTRA ALE & SCRATCHINGS Football is a funny old game as they say. And as the rather watchable Euro 2012 rumbles on with Roy’s England attempts at restoring pride to dear old Blighty, and the Germans (surely the Manchester United of the national teams) consistently reaching the latter stages of the tournament, passions are still running high. Spain has also delighted with its mint, lime and tangerine flavoured tic tacs. Apologies, we mean 'tika tak'a of course. So try telling the many balling Spanish fans left blubbing into their Paellas, the sobbing England fans left crying into their pints, the overdramatic Italians left blubbering into their minestrone that this is just a funny old sport. Days, weekends, summers and seasons can be ruined by the result of this noble and ignoble game. Oh! The thrills and spills of being an England fan. Even our lady kin get stirred into appreciation of a game they have no interest in at any other time in the footballing calendar. Although it must also be said, after a few glasses of vino tinto, that the passion and patriotism can lead to profanities that would make a docker blush – especially the improper songs about the referee, in front of the kids. Major football tournaments invariably offer another delightful chapter in the fabled story of Sepp Blatter. This year is no different and the always-one-step-aheadof-the-game Blatter is at it again. Goal line technology he says! The man is a thought leader of our times. It’s almost as though he can think of things before us mere mortals
have even dreamt of them. So as swathes of goalpost manufacturers go to Wimbledon to try and steal the magic ingredient behind Hawk-Eye, we settled down on the chesterfield to see what other innovations we could lift from other sports to make the beautiful game slightly more appealing. First up has to be cheerleaders. Ah yes, our American cousins have got one thing right at least. There can be absolutely no argument against cheerleaders. And let’s stay on that side of the Atlantic for a moment more, where we should perhaps consider taking a leaf out of the National Hockey League’s book and introduce a sin bin. We would hate to step on tradition and see this affect the iconic yellow and red cards though, so our sin bin would not be for bad behaviour. Ours would be for punishing bad haircuts or the most obscene of those frankly nauseating (and ubiquitous) footballer tattoos. Raul Meireles would spend most of the game in the sin bin on both counts. Then we would have the diving-style score
panel for unnecessary theatrics. A five-person panel would sit at a desk on the touchline observing the antics, and whenever a player falls dramatically clutching his face (after being lightly grazed on the stomach); the panel can lift their cards and give a score out of 10. An average of eight or over for any transgression leads to an immediate yellow card. Finally, there could be a pit lane. We call for the abolishment of half time and instead players can refuel, receive tactical instructions from the gaffer and have a quick rub with the magic sponge in the pit lane.
As managers sweat over when to strategically call players in from the field, it would also be the perfect place for Mario Balotelli to go and have a sulk. Or let off fireworks. As for now, it’s time to get back and watch the rest of Euro 2012 with a cold, crisp beer and vuvuzela in hand. Then it’s time for Wimbledon and we are starting to wonder how they are going to play every single game of the tournament in their allotted time, all on one court under the roof. Unless of course the wettest drought in history decides to behave itself.

EXTRA LETTERS & LOCAL RANTS Strawberry teas to fund charity Dear..EXTRA As we get into the swing of summer, I am writing to ask your readers to hold a Strawberry Tea for Breast Cancer Care. It’s the perfect excuse to get together with friends, family or colleagues and support the thousands of people who are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. Anywhere goes for a Strawberry Tea – at your book club or Zumba class, at work or in your garden. All you need to do is buy or bake some cakes, add some strawberries, put the kettle on and away you go. I’m in my 60s now and breast cancer has touched my life far too much. I’ve had good friends diagnosed and seen them struggle with the effects of the disease. Breast Cancer Care is a magnificent charity that provides much needed information and support. Please help them to help others by holding your own Strawberry Tea party. It’s a wonderful thing to do! It doesn’t matter if you raise £20 or £200 at your Strawberry Tea because every penny will help Breast Cancer Care support more people affected by breast cancer. If you want to get involved, go to www.breastcancercare.org.uk/strawberry or call 0870 164 9422 for a free fundraising pack full of ideas and tips that will help ensure your Strawberry Tea is the highlight of the summer. Thank you! With love and best wishes Julie Walters For free confidential advice about breast cancer, visit www.breastcancercare.org.uk or call thefree helpline on 0808 800 6000. Strawberry Tea is sponsored by British Summer Fruits. Visit www.britishsummerfruits.co.uk
Dear..EXTRA It is very disappointing that somebody has taken it upon themselves to try and repair the grass verges in Cottingham without going through the proper County Council channels. Having had discussions with officers at the County Council I found out that the cost to the council of putting the defective job right was £20,000.00. Of course I appreciate that whoever has decided to tarmac the verges was probably only trying to help, but much like the situation with the Tunwell Lane tree, they have fallen foul of proper procedure and have ended up doing more harm than good. If anybody does notice any street repair issues which they wish to report then they should contact me on 07801 849 503 and I will ensure that the issue is urgently dealt with. Kind Regards, Cllr Stan Heggs County Councillor for Corby Rural Dear..EXTRA May I comment on the Archbishop of Canterbury’s thanksgiving sermon at St Paul’s Cathedral celebrating the Diamond Jubilee? Dr Williams said, the Queen made the simple statement of commitment that she would be there for those she governed, that she was dedicating herself to them! On June 10, 1965 at Buckingham Palace, the Queen ‘agreed’ to a Royal Decree that would
‘rubber stamp’ the expulsion of the 2,000strong Creole population from their homeland, Diego Garcia Island, Indian Ocean, never to return? The expulsion would condemn the exiles to a life of hunger and derogation to the slums of Mauritius. A crime against humanity? To me, the Queen is agreeing to the Royal Decree and its immoral implication is not the actions of a compassionate, noble, gracious and Christian Queen! Many of the exiles above, young and old died of sadness not of disease! Diego Garcia Island, is still a British Crown Colony, was handed over to the Americans in a clandestine deal for an airbase in 1960! A damming indictment by the Royal Court of Justice said that the secret expulsion of the Chago Islanders, Indian Ocean, was illegal! A special report on the plight of the above islanders is captured on a fifty-five minute ITV documentary ‘Stealing a Nation’ by John Pilger, 2004. ‘Stealing a Nation’ is a documentary that Dr Rowan Williams should acquire, he may have second thoughts on his praise for the Queen! John Lobb Douglas Corby
Joys of Motoring
Dear..EXTRA I’m not normally one for writing in about issues which we all have problems with, but people who drive cars far too fast. My pet hate is motorists which decide to get off the motorway exit at the very last minute and force everybody else to brake sharply as they reduce their speed from 80mph to a standing queue in the space of 50 yards. At least its not as bad as abroad where there have been a series of robberies and express kidnappings on or around the motorway connecting Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotter-

Feeding in public!
Undecided: Is this something sweet or sour!
One of my horrors of commuting is standing ( because whoever gets a seat ?) on the train next to the noisy eater of strong smelling burger. Normally a man, he munches and belches his way through this manufactured muck and leaving some down his front and the rubbish on the floor. Charming. So believe me when I say I can understand people’s horror of feeding in public. At my school we were taught that eating in the street was practically a crime, and a sure sign of poor breeding! But I don’t get the whole concern about breastfeeding in public. I have been a mother for 19 years and have helped at various drop
in clinics, coffee mornings and the like. In all this time I have never seen anything as gross as the yob slobbering burger. Is it the thought of breast on display? I am sure that if you tried really hard, and went up really close up, and waited, you might get a millisecond glimpse of a nipple, but really, if you are that desperate go to the supermarket and look at the magazines on public display, it would be much easier. I have seen more breasts on show in skimpy outfits in the town centre on Saturday lunchtime. I don’t see anyone campaigning about covering these up. I know it is healthier for mum and
baby to breastfeed and saves the tax payers zillions on long term healthcare. The milks always on tap and always the right temperature, so baby doesn’t have to wait, so less likely to be crying in hunger, one thing less to bother others. It’s jammed full of good stuff for babys development. So explain to me what the problem is. Perhaps it is you that has the problem? Manager well on course for start of new season > Football NEW Corby Town manager Ian Sampson has wasted no time in signing up new players to the Steelmen’s squad and appointing a new captain.
NEW CAPTAIN: Paul Malone
Corby-born Paul Malone, who skippered the club’s Under 18s to success back in 2007, is delighted to have fulfilled a long-held ambition. He told the club’s website: “I said back in my first interview when I re-joined the club from Stamford that it was my dream to one day captain Corby Town, and to be named the skipper for next season is a great honour, I feel very proud. “I don’t believe that I have been named as the captain just because I am the only Corby lad in the team, I think that I have shown leadership with my performances on the pitch since I joined the club. I always wear my heart on my sleeve and have worked my socks off to get to where I am. “I have done my time in the lower leagues and to be stepping out as the captain of a Blue Square Bet North club next year will make it all worthwhile.” Sampson, the former Cobblers’ boss has also included in his new line-up the highly rated goalkeeper Paul Walker. The ex-Northampton keeper, who had a loan spell at Brackley Town last season, was released by the Sixfields club at the end of 2011/12. Another new signing is former St Neots captain Lewis Webb, a 22-year-old midfielder. The new recruits will join players who have renewed their contracts at the club. Central defender Phil Gulliver, who joined

Men score a decisive win > Bowls BOWLS Northamptonshire Men’s Section scored a thoroughly professional win by 24 shots over Hertfordshire. The men of Jackson Grundy Northamptonshire Bowls entertained Hertfordshire in the Inter County ‘Middleton Cup’ competition at a venue not used before for these events, Northampton Whyte Melville BC, and they obviously found it very much to their liking for, despite being a few shots adrift after five ends, which were quickly wiped out over the next few ends, and an ephemeral effort by Hertfordshire at around the 13 end mark which gave them a lead of eight shots, the County really got stuck in over the last seven or so ends to not only wipe out the deficit quickly but to go into a substantial lead. The County was helped in this surge by Vernon Gearey’s rink picking up a five on the 15th end, followed by a run of seven shots without reply, Paul Broderick’s rink picking up a count of four on the 18th end, and Jamie Walker’s rink making a recovery from 6-19 down after 13 ends by picking up a run of 11 shots without reply. At the same time Neil Corbyn’s rink was
maintaining its dominance by allowing its opponents to collect just two shots over the last 10 ends while conceding 25 shots. Final score was Northamptonshire 130 shots (18 pts) – Hertfordshire 106 shots (4 pts). This win gives the County a chance of progressing to the Quarter Finals, subject to winning against Cambridgeshire on the July 7, 2012, and of course subject to other County’s results. St Neots BC, Cambridgeshire, was the venue for the ladies of Jackson Grundy Bowls Northamptonshire Women’s Section when they met Essex Ladies in the Inter-County Johns Trophy’competition. Unfortunately for the County it was not a successful visit as they suffered a 26 shots defeat, although they had two winning rinks and therefore collected four points. Essex started off very well and by the fifth end had posted a 12 shot lead, and as the game progressed their lead steadily increased and by the three quarter stage had reach 32 shots, and despite a good effort by the County ladies over the last quarter, they could only stem the increase, and indeed to reduce it to the losing margin.
