Kettering General Hospital ROW Update

Temperatures Readers rise over SAVE future £48 ALL the candidates in the Corby by-election have been briefed on the future of Kettering General and have been told it will remain a ‘viable, busy hospital’, the Extra can reveal today. The in-depth briefing, which included documents and statements, was made in a bid to end the speculation and claims surrounding the hospital’s future, which have dominated the election debate. But it has done nothing to calm the political row surrounding the hospital. The furore has also hit Prime Minister’s Question Time in the Commons, with David Cameron stressing services at Kettering were safe and accusing Labour of ‘scaremongering’. A ‘leaked’ report on future provision of services issued by Labour has also been dismissed as being out of date. However, Labour’s candidate Andy Sawford maintains KGH’s beds and services face a ‘massive cut’. There have also been claims that the hospital is being used as a ‘political football’ in the election campaign. Today the Extra can reveal details of the briefings given to the candidates in next month’s poll by those in charge of the Healthier Together review of acute hospital services which is looking at the future of KGH. They were told earlier this month that all five hospitals involved in the review, including KGH, would be retained as ‘viable, busy hospitals’. Each site would have a maternity and A&E service as well as outpatients and ‘many other routine services’. The candidates were told: “Three of the sites would concentrate on more acute and emergency care while the other two would focus more on planned and elective care. Detailed discussion of possible service locations is yet to take place. “Vigorous business modelling is being used to test the models which are also the subject of

Recovery
BOSSES at Kettering General Hospital are working to agree a “recovery plan” with a health watchdog that has called for action over its “persistent failure” to treat emergency patients within four hours. The health regulator Monitor also called for action over its concerns about the Trust’s “board governance and financial performance”. The regulator’s chief operating officer Stephen Hay said: “It is not acceptable that the trust is persistently failing its A&E patients. We now expect the Trust to focus on immediately and sustainably resolving this issue.”

arson probe > Kettering
POLICE have appealed for information after a suspected arson attack on the old Seddons Jigsaw factory site in Kettering. Two separate blazes were started inside the building on Field Street on Friday October 26 between 10pm and 11pm. A Northamptonshire police spokesman said: “Extensive damage was caused to the property, which could have escalated to cause damage to residential properties nearby. “Witnesses or anyone with information, should call Crimestoppers on: 0800 555 111.”
phone surveys and online activity.” The board says: “Healthier Together has yet to finalise proposals detailing locations for reconfiguration of services. “We are therefore unable to discuss what reconfiguration of services could mean for any of the five hospital sites included in the review. This includes Kettering General Hospital. “However, the board is able to make the following commitments: No hospital will close. Kettering, Northampton, Milton Keynes, Luton & Dunstable and Bedford will all continue to provide most local services. “All five hospitals will have an A&E and maternity service. Our first priority is safe, sustainable, high quality services. Our recommendations will be based on clinical evidence and local need. No decisions will be taken without full public consultation.” The candidates have also been told that it is a ‘myth’ that the programme would lead to fewer hospital beds. They were told: “We will need fewer hospital beds because advances in treatment mean that more patients will be able to be treated as day cases or outpatients. “Fewer patients would need to be admitted. This will happen with or without the Healthier Together programme.” The briefing also told them: “Healthier Together is about making the most of our existing resources. It is not about looking for ways to cut jobs.” Steven Lowden, independent chairman of the Patient and Public Advisory Group of Healthier Together, told the Extra: “No decisions have been taken, this

is a strategic review. When we eventually end up with options to take forward there will be a formal public consultation.” And he added: “All the candidates have received a briefing on this and have had the opportunity to ask questions. All have had the same information.” But the row has continued after the briefing, with Conservative candidate Christine Emmett writing to Labour’s candidate Andy Sawford, demanding an end to ‘scaremongering over the future of Kettering General Hospital’. In her letter she said: “It is important to act responsibly regarding the future of KGH, to stick to the facts and not to use it is as a political football as this could lead to ‘misleading and confusing’ conclusions being drawn. Will you do so in the future?” In response, Labour said it was not the party ‘playing political football with the NHS’. Andy Sawford has responded to the Tory candidate in a letter which he says details how the review says the ‘best option’ would be to downgrade A&E, children’s, maternity and acute services at Kettering and cut 515 of its 658 beds. He said: “While I have been fighting to get the truth about the future of Kettering General Hospital, you have asserted that KGH will not face cuts to services. The facts are now clear: official documents show the review says the ‘best’ option is massive cuts to beds and services at Kettering and Bedford hospitals. “Local people need an MP who will fight for the services they rely on, not someone who simply repeats the as surances they get from Government ministers.”

THE publication of national unemployment figures this month sparked a response from the county’s Chamber of Commerce. Paul Griffiths, chief executive of Northamptonshire Chamber, said: “The latest job figures are encouraging and heading in the right direction. “All areas in the county are showing either a drop in unemployment or have stayed at the same level. The largest decreases are in Wellingborough, Northampton North, Daventry and Cor-
by – which hit a four-year high in youth unemployment when the last figures were announced in August. Kettering has remained at the same level, with 4.1 per cent of the town out of work. “This echoes what we are hearing from local businesses. When we surveyed Northants businesses as part of our Quarterly Economic Survey last month, we were pleased to find out that 47 per cent of all respondents had tried to recruit new employees during the third quarter of 2012, with 71 per cent of manufacturing and 64 per cent of service opportunities being for full-time

positions. The latest job market figures are a positive development, signalling both locally and nationally that people are returning to work. “However, forceful measures are still needed to ensure we return to sustainable positive growth. Efforts to reduce the deficit will mean that employment in the public sector will continue to shrink, which will affect local job figures. “So, it is critical to ensure the private sector remains able to create new jobs. The Government must continue to help businesses grow and create jobs with measures such as further deregulation, increased infrastructure spending, and the creation of a Business Bank.” *Business Expertise with Extra columnist Paul Griffiths is on page 10.

The year before he was named Slimming World’s Greatest Loser and has now achieved a total weight loss of 25st 8lb. Hearing his story is certainly inspiring and although he first met Jayne at the ball, she described how she first ‘met’ him in a magazine the year before. His story in the magazine made her think: “If that man can lose 25 stone, my five-anda-half should be a doddle!” Both in relationships when they met, Jayne first introduced herself to Roberto as a favour for a friend who wanted to find out if he was married. They became friends and over the next couple of years encouraged each other in their weight loss journey. When Roberto had to undergo six operations due to complications following the removal of his excess skin, Jayne supported him. In time the relationships they were both in ended, and Jayne described how they started dating after she forgot to give Roberto petrol money: “He came over and did this campaign, and I sent him a message on Facebook, ‘Hope you got home okay?’ and he sent a message back saying, ‘Apart from having to push the car to the petrol station!’ I got a

Jayne has inspired Roberto, too. Encouraged by her dedication as a consultant, he realised he also wanted to help others lose weight. Roberto is a member at one of Jayne’s

Roberto is featured in the 100th edition of the Slimming World magazine, which he launched at W H Smith last Saturday.

Radical approach to ending re-offending conditions to engage with probation and police officers in order to assist their rehabilitation. This is known in our county as the Rose Programme. “However, what we find is that those who receive less than 12 months are not statutorily obliged to engage with the authorities. Yet this category of offenders often causes the most harm locally and are also more likely to reoffend once released. “What’s new with this approach is that those who are released from prison and fit into the category of less than 12 months in prison will now be assessed against a number of pathways involving: drugs and alcohol support, accommodation support, education, training and employment support, alcohol and drugs intervention, health support, finance and debt assistance, guidance with children and families as well as attitude and behaviour management. “We are also working with local support agencies like Groundworks to provide street mentors to help people get back into mainstream society.

A RADICAL new approach has been launched in Northamptonshire in a bid reduce the number of people who reoffend – particularly after their release from prison. Launched this month, it means those posing a threat of re-offending or who were sentenced to less than 12 months in prison for a variety of crimes will be ‘engaged with’ by special Diversion officers. The aim is that the offenders whose crimes cause the most harm are managed in a co-ordinated manner in the community. The police, together with the probation service and private and third sector agencies, will provide a co-ordinated system of mentoring, training, education and other forms of support to help them break the cycle of crime. Chief Inspector Mark Evans, who has spearheaded this approach, said: “Offenders sentenced to more than 12 months in prison, are often released with

NORTHAMPTONSHIRE Fire and Rescue Service is calling on people across the county to give their views on its plans for future improvement. All fire and rescue services are required by the Government to produce and consult on a strategic Integrated Risk Management Plan (IRMP) that outlines proposals for change and planned actions in the coming years. The 2013-2017 draft includes plans for the development of a strategic alliance between Northamptonshire and Warwickshire fire and rescue authorities. County council cabinet member for infrastructure and public protection, Andre Gonzalez de Savage said: “The plan sets out what Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service is working to achieve over the next few years.

“In addition, we will continue to use the highly effective Buddi tracker system, which allows us to electronically monitor and manage offenders. This can allow us to potentially eliminate people as suspects as well as allowing officers to conduct curfew checks remotely. “Anyone of concern who fails to participate in the programme or does reoffend will then be subject to the enforcement arm of policing, working side-byside with this new team. “We want to make sure that people are given the appropriate chances to integrate back into the community while reducing the risks of reoffending and improving community safety. “As well as the anguish of victimisation, offending costs society a huge amount of money with everything from insurance or personal loss to court and prison costs. “It is hoped that the investment in diverting people away from criminality with this joint partnership programme will prove to be a much more costeffective use of public funds.”

EXTRA business
Getting lippy for a good cause Extra Business Expertise > COUNTY STAFF at a local firm are hoping to keep a stiff upper lip as they raise money to help change the face of men’s health. Male members of staff at Higgins building supplies on Turnells Mill Lane, Wellingborough, hope to be bristling with success as they donate their top lips to ‘Movember’ – the moustachegrowing season. Customers of the company are also being urged to grow a moustache in November as part of the campaign to
raise awareness and funds for prostate and testicular cancer. Peter Higgins explained: “The aim of Movember is to get guys talking. It all starts with the moustache and before you know it you’re having conversations about your ‘Mo’ and why you’re doing it. “You don’t have to train for it like someone doing a marathon or a bike ride. I’ve done it for the last two years and, although you might look like someone from an adult movie or a First World War RAF pilot, it’s only for 30 days! “We’ll be encouraging all our staff and customers at Higgins to join our
team and see how many Mo Bros we can recruit and how much we can raise. “Just register at: www.movember.com then search for Higgins, to join our team.” Prostate cancer kills 10,000 men a year in the UK. Last year, more than 250,000 people registered for Movember and raised nearly £23million for Prostate Cancer UK and The Institute of Cancer Research. Higgins is also looking to raise money in other ways during the month. And £1 from every ‘HIGGI’ dumpy back of aggregate will be donated to the cause. It will also be selling special £3 T-shirts to customers.

ENTERPRISING: From left, Daniel Meakins, Steven Drake, Jade Moore and her body art model.
> COUNTY THE Prince’s Trust is opening up new avenues for young entrepreneurs in the region. A local Sustainable Enterprise Project for this area was launched last Thursday at the Corby Cube, showcasing the valuable work the trust does, as well as highlighting its future aspirations for entrepreneurship in the area. Attendees heard from the experience of young people who were already involved in the programme: people like Daniel Meakins who is setting up his DDM Garden Care business and is receiving help with his business plan; Steven Drake whose new enterprise, SJD Climbing, is benefiting from the programme; and Jade Moore who has recently started up her body art business, Ruby Moon Face and Body Decoration, with the help of the Trust (pictured here, left to right). Ambitious young people who are interested in starting up their own business will gain from partnership with local agencies that are passionate about cultivating young enterprise. The programme seeks out those aged 18-30, looking to start their own business and provides a four-day course, exploring all the aspects involved in setting up their new venture, after which they will receive help to set up a business plan and apply for funding. On becoming self-employed, young people will also benefit from a dedicated business mentor for two years. The project, which has received help from Corby Enterprise Centre, seeks to foster, support and sustain an entrepreneurial culture amongst local young people, raising their aspirations and presenting business start-up as a realistic life choice. According to Karen Harewood from The Prince’s Trust: “It’s about creating self-employment as a viable option.”

The importance of exporting > County THROUGHOUT October, there has been no hiding from the word ‘exporting’. Regular readers of this column know I am an advocate of exporting – it is the key to getting the UK out of recession. Here in Northamptonshire, we produce a range of products in demand at home and abroad, from food and drink to car components. Our products can help boost our local economy as our businesses grow.
There has never been a better time to start looking into exporting. The Government has announced that £13 million of funding has been awarded to UKTI to help 10,000 more British firms export. UKTI will use this funding to help more companies make contacts and sell overseas through trade shows, Overseas Market Introduction Service (OMIS) – which provides targeted market research encourage relationships in new, fast-growing

This will see some 100 events aimed at SMEs take place across the UK. One, ExploreExport, is at The Hilton Hotel Northampton on Tuesday November 13 and experts will offer knowhow on exporting to countries such as Africa, South America, Turkey and the USA. Last month, Northamptonshire was crowned the Most Enterprising Place in Britain, and one of the reasons given for this was for ‘encouraging exports’. With so many incentives available, let’s explore exporting to grow our local economy.

FISH shop that dishes up large portions of financial expertise! > COUNTY MEMBERS of a help and advice team are feeling rather chipper after being shortlisted in the ‘Building Futures’ category for the East Midlands in the National Housing Federation’s Community Impact Awards. The FISH Shop, based in Cambridge Street, Wellingborough, is not what you would imagine; the only battering that happens here is debt-battering and they don’t deep-fry, but instead aim to lift people out of the frying pan and away from the fire. They concentrate on the needs of local people and tackle issues relating to debt, benefits, employment, training, health and well-being offering a friendly and welcoming one-stop-shop where people need to tell their story only once. FISH stands for Financial Inclusion Support Hub and the team will have been serving the community for a year in December, spearheaded by Wellingborough Homes in partnership with the Com-
munity Law Service, JobCentre Plus, Connexions Northamptonshire, The Mallows Company, Women’s Aid, Family Support Link, NHS health trainers and Heartlands Mediation. Dave Willis, chief executive of Wellingborough Homes, said: “It has already helped hundreds of Wellingborough residents and is going from strength to strength. So we are delighted that its work and achievements have been recognised in this way, by being shortlisted in such prestigious national awards.” The awards attracted more than 180 entries and a spokesperson for the Community Impact Awards explained: “With so many fantastic entries, it proved a difficult task for our tenant judging panels who helped decide the shortlist.” The Building Futures category recognises initiatives which tackle worklessness and financial exclusion, provide opportunities to gain skills and improve employment prospects and unlock the potential of local residents.

As motorists choose smaller, more economical cars, the Treasury is looking for methods of dealing with the projected fall in income from Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), commonly known as road or car tax. These new proposals, already nicknamed the Top Gear Tax, would replace VED with a one-off purchase tax, charging £50 per gram of CO2 emitted over 94g/km. By this method, it is hoped that car buyers will force manufacturers to develop ever-greener engines. Rural Northamptonshire’s farmers and Part-time or freelance other essential rural workers often need 4x4 vehicles to do their jobs safely and effectively. Local businesses are being urged to get into the yuletide spirit by decorating a Christmas tree – and helping to raise charity cash. During the switch on, Kettering Council will unveil its Winter Wonderland grotto in the Market Place buildings, which will be open to the public over the Christmas period. The council is looking for businesses and organisations to decorate and donate a tree to the Christmas tree festival. The donated trees will be judged by the public
and the winning organisation will receive a donation for their chosen charity. If you would like to get involved or find out more, please either email Steve Edwards: stevenedwards@kettering.gov.uk or call: 01536 534170 for more information. Valerie Hitchman, head of community services, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for local businesses and organisations to get imaginative and creative to reflect both their unique personality and the spirit of Christmas. “All they will need to do is purchase a tree, some decorations and have lots of creative imagination.” Portfolio holder for community and culture, Steve Bellamy added: “Last year, the grotto received amazing feedback and, this year, we would like to make it even bigger and better. “By working with local businesses and organisations we can get everyone involved in the build-up to Christmas.”

Author Sue dreams up her sixth novel > KETTERING AWARD-WINNING local writer Sue Moorcroft’s sixth novel will be published in paperback next week. The publication of the book, titled Dream a Little Dream, follows the launch of Sue’s novella Darcie’s Dilemma, released as an ebook this autumn. Sue, who lives in Kettering, said: “I used to dream about getting my first novel published. I didn’t realise that the sixth would be about dreams! “The word ‘dream’ can relate to something we have during sleep – or it can relate to a goal we’re aiming for. My new novel concerns both types and it surprised me how inextricably they became linked in the writing.” To write Dream a Little Dream – her fifth title with independent publisher Choc Lit – Sue researched such
diverse subjects as narcolepsy, reflexology and even spent one of the most exciting afternoons of her life in the air traffic control tower at Stansted airport. Sue will be signing copies of her book at Kettering Waterstones from 12-2pm on Saturday November 10. In addition to her pub-
lished novels, Sue is the author of many short stories, a creative writing tutor, an editor of numerous anthologies and a guest correspondent on the blog Girl Racer. Dream a Little Dream ebook is available online. The paperback is £7.99. For more information about Sue, visit: www.suemoorcroft.com

Egyptian Hip Hop/ Vitalic/Rave Age Paul Banks/Banks Good Don’t Sleep Electronic music Interpol frontman Manchester’s Egyptian Hip Hop have been around since 2009, trailblazers of a scene dubbed ‘doss-wave’. from France and it’s so sharp you could splice your eardrums on it. It’s thunderously loud, laced as it is with lots of heavy metal. ‘The March Of Skabah’ will genuinely make your neighbours cry.
Paul Banks does the solo thing ditching much of that band’s sonic feel in favour of cerebral Talk Talk-tinged noise. ‘Over My Shoulder’ is poignant, while first track ‘The Base’ sounds like perfect music for film.

Leona Lewis/ Glassheart
The Rolling Stones are rock’s DNA and this is a collection of their greatest hits spanning ‘Sympathy For The Devil’ ‘Tumbling Dice’, ‘Fool To Cry’ and ‘Miss You’ and two new tracks, including the not too shabby ‘Doom And Gloom’.
Scot Calvin Harris is the go-to man for pop’s luminaries. His pumping solo album is adorned by the likes of Rihanna, Florence, Dizzee and Tinie Tempah. All collaborations work out apart from the weak-as-wee Ellie Goulding.
You gotta love Neil Young, who recently claimed he’d never heard of Bono. The guitar-playing troubadour continues to mine his own particular sonic gold like peer Bob Dylan. ‘Driftin Back’ clocks in at half an hour. Great Value.
Leona Lewis goes back to woe-is-me mode after the relative commercial cul-desac of ‘Collide’. ‘Glassheart’ is a conscious update of the ‘Bleeding Love’ template with tracks like ‘When It Hurts’, ‘Un Love Me’ and ‘Fingerprint’.

Bristol birthed a scene called ‘trip hop’ in the early 90s – a loose coalition of hip hop, reggae and dub. In the debut album from Massive Attack titled ‘Blue Lines’ it achieved a sonic perfection and in many ways (along with Soul II Soul’s Club Classics and Tricky’s Maxinquaye) laid a musical template for UK music. ‘Blue Lines’ is a genuine spine-tingling mo-
ment in pop’s (if you can call it that) evolution. The album is dominated by the epic ‘Unfinished Sympathy’, beautifully accompanied by Shara Nelson’s impassioned vocalising. A cover of ‘Be Thankful For What You Got’ is almost hymn-like, while the clattering percussion that runs through ‘Safe From Harm’ could bust any soundsystem on the planet.

Looking for the ultimate party season app? Caricature Me does what it says on the tin and will render your fizzog in ghastly and devilishly cruel caricature. Even Brad Pitt and Angelina J would look rubbish on this.
This is either great kitsch entertainment, or proof in an app that the world is going to hell in the proverbial handcart. Korean karaoke by South Korean rapper, Psy, peddles what they’re calling K-Pop. Or C-Rap?
Everything’s All White: Jack White What do you do when your band is massive all over the world and still has its credibility intact? If you’re Jack White you disband. That’s what he did with The White Stripes, a two-piece that single-handedly revitalised interest in the blues and made it over for 21st century consumption. The duo produced a seamless body of critically acclaimed work, span-
ning ‘De Stijl’ through to band documentary ‘Under Great White Northern Lights’. They were always an interesting and visceral live proposition, studiously decked out in red and white. White is now a solo act and his debut album ‘Blunderbuss’ released earlier this year is every bit as feisty and charged as anything released under The White Stripes brand.

Girls Allowed: Girls Aloud Swansong?
Directed by William (The Exorcist) Friedkin, Killer Joe is a bloody viewing experience around a fiendish contract killer.
Congratulations: It’s The Wedding Present
Leona Lewis is that rare thing – an ‘X Factor’ survivor. Her career didn’t disappear under the baggage of Simon Cowell and ever since her singles ‘A Moment Like This’ (a UK Xmas number one and the most downloaded track of 2006) and ‘Bleeding Love’ she has managed to keep a British (and worldwide) public engaged. Her forte is the big power ballad, the bedrock of her two albums ‘Spirit’ (2007) and ‘Echo’ (2009). ‘Glassheart’ doesn’t fix what isn’t broken. ‘Glassheart’ is out now Girls Aloud are marking ten years together (or relatively together) with an arena tour nextyear that is widely expected to be their career finale. Normally, the demise of a pop-by-numbers Syco experiment would merit little in the way of dry eyes. But Girls Aloud have delivered a succession of bonkersly brilliant singles. ‘Biology’ still sounds like a song with two great choruses. Debut single ‘Sound Of The Underground’ crackles with modernism. Girls Aloud Ten: The Hits Tour 2013, March 2013 The Wedding Present are what you’d call an acquired taste. Singer David Gedge’s mannered vocals were born and raised in Leeds and his band – he has been the sole ever present figure since the group’s formation in ’85 – continue to tour and release new material. Almost inevitably, they were a ‘John Peel’ band and performed numerous sessions on his prestigious show. New album ‘Valentina’ (released in March) brings them bang up to date. The Wedding Present tour the UK in November

EXTRA Time - Showbiz and Entertainment Fun from Heart 96.6 in Northamptonshire. HOW ON EARTH did we get to November so soon! Really looking forward to Firework weekend, and I know there are some fantastic displays taking place across Kettering, Corby and Wellingborough, that I am hoping to get to! We caught up with Lawson this week to talk about their debut album, ‘Chapman Square’. It’s the second time we’ve chatted with the guys, the first time I tried to impart some of my legendary fashion advice and suggested that they would look good in florals, so I was keen to know if they’d taken that advice on board? Ryan said, ‘actually Joel is wearing a flowery shirt today and he looks good in it’. Yay!! We wanted to know the significance of ‘Chapman Square’. Ryan told us “It’s a development in the south of London, it’s nothing to write home about to be fair, it just means a lot to us four, it was the first place we met and were we recorded our first songs and our first you tube video. It was where I lived with an ex girlfriend, who a lot of the songs are about. We had a lot of good times but a lot of sad times”. “Standing in the Dark” from the album is one of our favourites tracks off the album, and we wanted to know who the guys would prefer standing in the dark with? Given the choice of Lady GaGa and Rihanna, the guys chose Rihanna…. Girls Aloud were chosen ahead of The Saturday’s because they’re getting back together and the guys were keen to know about their touring plans! Finally, we wanted to know who would win between Marge Simpson and Miss Piggy. Marge Simpson won for her sexy voice and blue hair…. Because Ryan has actually been out with a girl with blue hair!!! Finally, we’re still on the hunt for a champion on the Big Town Show Down, and we want Kettering, Corby and Wellingborough up there! Register online and don’t forget to tune in Mon-Fri 6am 10am and for the next couple of Saturday’s we’ll be entertaining you on breakfast too as we need more pennies for Chrimbo shopping! www.heart.co.uk/fourcounties/on-air/breakfast/ or at 96.6fm.

FOR a glimpse of a true Northamptonshire market town packed with history and character take a trip to Desborough to see what it can offer to visitors. Located in the Ise Valley between Kettering and Market Harborough, the town has its rich and fascinating history dating back to the Bronze Age with one of the great finds of the era being the Desborough Mirror, now part of the British Museum’s collection. Other notable milestones include Desborough being one of the first British towns to set up a Co-operative Society to protect its workforce. The importance of the town’s roots from the early settlement to the 19th and 20th centuries can now be found at the Desborough Heritage Centre, which houses a wealth of visual information of how the area and landscape has changed. Today the town is well stocked with thriving independent businesses which have plenty to offer and suit all tastes. Take a gentle stroll along Station Road and the surrounding streets to browse the array of stores – some very much part of the town’s history such as Burditts Electrical which was established more than a century ago. Looking for some pampering? Then visit Sally Anne Hair or The Salon, or for friendly eyecare service drop into Desborough Opticians. When it’s pets that need extra attention seek out Ash Tree Veterinary Practice. Meanwhile KP Wolfenden Family Butchers will provide customers with all their cooking and catering requirements and those in search of quaint gifts can venture into Expressions Card Shop and Icle Star, while Alison Flowers, based inside Stripes traditional sweet shop, will provide the perfect floral arrangement. Other key trades include FA Walker & Sons carpet business in the High Street. For an alternative shopping experience visit Desborough for a refreshing escape from the big retailers and chain stores.

EXTRA Letters & Rants
Charity Trustrees Wanted Dear Editor As Trustee’s Week begins I would like to encourage your readers to become trustees of local charities. Trustees play an important role in the overall management of charities and offer strategic direction. As the Chairman of the volunteering and learning charity CSV, I have seen first hand how expertise in management, finance and marketing can help a charity thrive. Charities are not the only ones to benefit. As a trustee you can develop your own career, help to fill a skills gap as well as make a valuable contribution to society. In these tough economic times, it’s important that we all play a part in strengthening our communities. If you have professional skills to offer, for example in finance, fundraising, or strategic management, or if you have a personal interest in a particular charity, then get in touch with CSV. We can match your skills to a charity in your local area. Visit www.csv.org.uk/professionals for more information. Sir Jon Shortridge Chairman at CSV Dear Editor Amazon has been selling its e-books with VAT at three per cent, which has given it an enormous advantage because it has forced British publishers to cover the extra costs of levying VAT at the regular 20 per cent, as just been revealed in the national press. Now, the Commission has given Amazon 30 days to put its VAT up to 15 per cent on these products. You see, VAT is an EU tax and the minimum rate is 15 per cent, right across the EU. The question is, how has Amazon been getting away with it for so long? Answer; it is registered as a Luxembourg company which has VAT at 3 per cent. How has Luxembourg been getting away with VAT at 3 per cent in defiance of the EU 15 per
cent minimum? Answer; Luxembourg is a founder member, central to the EU, favoured son, not to be upset. Did I hear someone say, “level playing field”, don’t make me laugh, that’s just for the British media. Yours sincerely, Derek Clark UKIP MEP for the East Midlands.
Dear Editor It is heart-breaking to learn of the growing problem of kittens and puppies being dumped like rubbish, exposing a disturbing new trend of pets being treated like a disposable commodity. When dogs and cats aren’t neutered, their unwanted litters are often left to suffer. Sadly there are too many unwanted pets and not enough homes for them all, which is why pet charity Blue Cross wants more pets neutered to stop this needless misery. I am especially proud to support the Blue Cross Big Neutering Campaign. The solution is clear: make neutering the norm and stop the needless suffering of unwanted kittens and puppies. I would urge pet owners everywhere to do the same. With your help, we could avoid an animal welfare crisis. Miranda Richardson Dear Editor THE DEATH OF HANDWRITING. Learning to write is longer an important part of the curriculum it now seems? Texting masks the lack of education and illiteracy,no longer allowing us to see the personality of the writer and the way they form letters which express their personality. Moving from the physical to the digital may well mean the keyboard will

outstrip the pen and pencil, and soon signing for a parcel or a cheque or on the bottom of an important contract will be a thing of the past. Writing letters is a secure way of communicating not like today ‘s email. It would seem the Ancient technology is coming to an end, murdered to death by illiterate texters who mask their ignorance of punctuation and spelling with abbreviated rubbish... long live the written word....... Kind regards, Tom Bingham NN17 Dear Editor Superfast Broadband for Gretton Residents and business in Gretton are in desperate need of major upgrades to their broadband infrastructure with levels of coverage and internet speeds currently among the lowest in the county. The recent changes to the Rockingham exchange have resulted in some improvement to service however broadband speeds still remain inadequate and are having a severe impact upon local business and upon recreation and amenity for people living in the village. Fortunately in the 2012 budget the government announced funding to improve rural broadband coverage across the country and Northamptonshire County Council was one of the first local authorities to bid for and win this vital funding. Thanks to the hard work of the County Council, superfast broadband is now expected to be available across the majority of the county by 2015. For Gretton however this is a service that is urgently needed right away. That is why I am launching a bid for Gretton to be urgently prioritised for the installation of the new superfast
broadband service. Please back the bid by logging on to http:// epetition.northants.public-i.tv/epetition_core/ view/grettonsuperfastbroadband and sign the petition to see Gretton prioritised and its urgent need addressed. Cllr Rob McKellar. Gretton Dear Editor On October 28th UKIP National Pub Week begins! We are losing our pubs at an alarming rate, each week a minimum of 12 pubs give up business. In these recession hit days, landlords struggle to make a living. Surely we must do all we can to ensure that our pubs are treated fairly by the pubcos and the EU laws which now apply. Pubs provide a responsible and controlled drinking environment in contrast to street drinking and the trend to “tank up” on cheaper booze at home. We must never forget that pubs are a business and businesses pay business rates and employ people, the loss of Income to the government and jobs in our communities has to be considered. Give your “local” your support this week and every week before we lose even more of our pubs which are such a great responsible British institution. Margot Parker UKIP candidate for Corby and East Northants by-election

Lisa Phillips Executive Coach, Personal Development and Enjoying life! As a regularly featured personality on radio and TV, Lisa is an international expert on self development and coaching. She has owned her coaching business, Amazing Coaching for ten years and has worked in over 20 countries. Her passion and love of life is infectious. WELCOME to this week’s Health and Wellbeing column from Life Coach Lisa. Today we are going to focus on making sure that you take good care of yourself. This includes making a commitment to making your own needs and happiness a priorityt is happening in your life right now. Looking after our own emotional wellbeing can quickly fall into the ‘ I haven’t got time’ basket as often we are programmed to spend most of our day putting everyone else before ourselves, whether it is an elderly relative, family member or friend.
The problem with that is that if we don’t take care of ourselves, sooner or later we won’t be of much use to anyone else—or to ourselves! If you are one of those people who are constantly running around in emergency mode, your mind and body may just end up paying a high price for putting other people needs before your own. I am a big supporter of the airplane/oxygen metaphor. You must put on your own oxygen mask before helping others. In my coaching practise, I still get shocked at the amount of people who come to me burned out and exhausted believing that everybody’s needs are more important than their own. These people often believe that self-care is selfish and may have difficulty saying No to other people. I call these people the ‘ People Pleasers, fixers or rescuers’ as they continue to put other people’s needs and wants before their own and in time, can end up feeling burned out or even resentful towards other people. Now don’t get me wrong, it is important to care for others, but we also need to commit to taking care of ourselves. Remember, when your own needs are taken care of, you are much more equipped to look after other people. Start by changing a few small things in your day like making sure you take regular breaks, eat regular meals and practise saying No to other people. Tune in to your own needs and

learn to honour them as well – without feeling guilty. Also try to give up the need for perfectionism and stop setting yourself ridiculously high expectations of yourself. Aim to do your best and that is sufficient. One of my favourite tips to prioritise your emotional wellbeing is to write a list of 50 things which make you happy and commit to doing at least one thing a day from this list. Now the list does not need to be full of expensive ideas but it could just be simple
things as burning some nice smelling candles or having a nice warm bath or treating yourself to 10 minutes relaxation time. Remember, you deserve to take care of yourself – you are worth it! Have a great week That’s all for now. Lisa x

Learn Direct do their sums whilst the owner nips off for a well earned break A GOVERNMENT SUPPORTED training centre, designed to help people improve their skills, has suddenly closed following an investigation into alleged irregularities. The In Business Training centre in Tresham Street, Kettering, failed to open ten days ago after the staff were interviewed at a local hotel by members of learndirect, the government sponsored supplier of courses to improve skills in maths, English, IT and business to hundreds of learning centres up and down the country. Staff arrived a week last Friday to find that the main network computers and other equipment had been removed the night before, allegedly by the centre’s owner, Mahmoud Kaffash, and tables and chairs “piled on top of each other.” Mr Kaffash, 53, who set up In Business Training (UK) Ltd in October 2008, operated two centres, one at 15 Tresham Street and the other in Bromham Road, Bedford. It is understood he recently opened a third in Wigston, Leicestershire. Almost two weeks ago, on Thursday October 18th, staff members were called to interviews by senior officials of learndirect at a local hotel, the Best Western Nasby Hotel in Sheep Street, where they were questioned about the running of the Kettering operation. The centre officially closed the following Monday. One of the Kettering team told the Extra: “The interviews of each staff member was timed at 90 minute intervals and conducted under police-type rules; each person was cautioned at the beginning of the session. “We were asked about procedures in the office and, in particular, about how people taking courses had been awarded certificates and if they had passed a particular course or module before being signed off as having acquired a qualification.”
Staff had become suspicious a few weeks earlier when a member of staff was fired and then learndirect refused to allow any new members of the public to sign on for courses. “We were told that the sacked employee was offered £2,000 to keep quiet about how the operation was run,” alleged a member of staff. “We have been told that learndirect is looking into allegations of fraud and that, if proved, details will be handed to the police.” The staff member said that employees had been informed by Mr Kaffash, an Iranian, who according to company records lives in Newport Pagnall with his wife, Fatemeh, had told staff he was leaving the country immediately after learndirect started investigations, despite, also, claiming he had made arrangements to meet learndirect investigators. One of the staff, who phoned learndirect to see what was happening, said he was told learndirect had cancelled the contract with In Business Training (UK) Ltd because the main computers had been removed. However, staff said that in the last few days they had received e-mails from Mr Kaffash saying that they would receive their monthly pay on November 1st Calls to the Kettering and Bedford offices went unanswered, as did e-mails to Mr Kaffash. Jennie Hopkinson, spokesperson for learndirect told the Extra: “In Business Training took the decision to close their centres, including the one in Kettering, and as a result learndirect has terminated their contract. Our focus now is ensuring minimum disruption to learners and we are working hard to find other centres for them to continue their learning. We have been interviewing staff at IBT and we are waiting to talk to the owner so it is not appropriate to comment any further at this stage.”
MAHMOUD KAFFASH: They say Iran is lovely this time of year...

THE POPPIES: Saved today...or...
140 years melting away? THE TRIALS and tribulations of Kettering Town football club have been hitting the headlines for over a year. But is to-day finally doomsday for the struggling, debt-riddled club? A terse message on the club’s web site states that the club has been given until to-day to comply with stipulations laid down at an emergency meeting of the Board of the Evo-Stik Southern League a week ago if it is to continue playing in the league. The full League statement said: “Kettering Town’s League match on Saturday with St Neots Town is postponed. “The Club has been given a deadline of 31st October to satisfy certain conditions placed on them by the League. There will be no further comments until 31st October from the League.” The 64,000 dollar question though is: will their next scheduled game away to Barwell on Saturday take place or has the team, as seems likely, played its last game? Many supporters believe that the club is a “twitching corpse,” emitting a “clearly audible death rattle” and that the end is nigh. Too many times over the past months attempts have been made to breathe new life (and money) into the club. Disgruntled and despondent supporters have drifted away and sponsors have turned their backs as the club’s problems have mounted. The club’s supporters’ trust has valiantly tried to assist, raising money and, for a time, even taking over the task of managing the club’s finances in order to pay creditors and allowing the club to continue trading when it was placed into administration via a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA). A creditors’ meeting held on June 15th revealed that the club owed more than £1 million to more than 70 creditors, including players, local businesses and energy companies. The largest sums were owed to current owner, Imraan Ladak, the then acting chairman, George Rolls and shareholder Ray Khan. The CVA proposal stated that “the current owners will waive their right to repayment of their loans under the arrangement.” Promising words followed from Rolls that the CVA would lead to a brighter future for the club and “Kettering Town will prosper again” - despite being dumped out of the Blue Square Bet Premier League and into the Southern League on a parttime basis. That was four months ago and matters
have since gone from bad to worse. Three weeks after the CVA Rolls was ignominiously forced to step down as chairman when he was suspended from football involvement for five years following no less than 3,073 alleged breaches of Football Association betting regulations. He was also fined £10,000 and warned about his future conduct by an independent regulatory commission after an investigation into betting irregularities between 2007-2010 while on Cambridge United’s board and also associated with Weymouth. Ritchie Jeune, who had been part of a take-over bid, became chairman but lasted only a few days in the job, forcing owner, Ladak, to step into the hot seat. Less than a month later, the club - which only three years ago had put up a spirited display in the fourth round of the FA Cup against Fulham - was again in severe financial difficulties, unable to pay player and staff wages. By the beginning of October the crisis was so acute that the club was unable to name a squad for a mid-week league game against Leamington and a few days earlier only ten players turned out in a 7-0 defeat to Bashley, strengthening fears that the club’s 140 year old history was about to end. Not fulfilling a fixture is a cardinal disciplinary offence in the soccer world. Apparently KFC could only muster six players for the Leamington game. To add to an already woeful situation the electricity has been switched off to their Nene Park ground after the club was unable to pay a deposit to a supplier. Also, John Beck’s position as manager has almost certainly come to an end after he was reported to have been escorted from the ground a couple of hours before the kickoff against Concord Rangers. Also, there are questions as to whether £3,000, as part of the CVA, will be paid to avoid a winding up order. Ladak has recently taken to the airwaves saying there are three investors looking to buy the club. But who are these mystery philanthropists? Will they really want to pour their hard earned money down a drain that can’t be plugged? It is very probably they won’t get the chance to be so foolish if the Southern League’s ultimatum is not met by the club to-day - an ultimatum which may be the final catalyst for the life-support machine, which has been keeping the club artificially alive for some many months, being finally switched off.

EXTRA FASHION Land girls The Country Heritage look is one of the biggest trends out there this autumn. Tweed, feathers, furs, flat caps, equestrian-style boots and waxed quilted jackets, once the preserve of the countryside and the hunting, shooting and fishing brigade, suddenly seem like the chicest option even for urbanites not planning on going anywhere near a field. And it’s all down to the Burberry Prorsum Autumn Winter 2012 catwalk show: with the somewhat bygone era-sounding theme of ‘town and country’, it took the staple wardrobe pieces required for braving the great outdoors and put a cool new spin on them, making Country
Heritage a coveted and desirable trend. As well as traditional tweed, Burberry incorporated Arts and Crafts-inspired woven florals with a country feel into the collection, which, along with the addition of bow belts around the models’ waists and velvet detailing, put a feminine spin on what is generally considered to be very much a masculine trend. And it is the now iconic illustrated owl emblem (along with other woodland creatures including foxes, dogs and sparrows) that featured on jumpers and t-shirts on the Burberry runway that have really made the trend xgo stellar, and have spawned a thousand high

street lookalikes in their wake. While a cute owl jumper is a wise way to invest in the look, other elements of the Country Heritage trend are everywhere on the high street, too. Quirky tweed hats with feathers can be worn with a tweed or waxed coat or jacket, chunky knits can be teamed with tweed skirts and trousers, and 60sstyle tweed pointed flats are a subtle way to incorporate the trend into your everyday wardrobe. The beauty of this trend is that whether you wear just one item or fully embrace the look, including some element of Country Heritage in an outfit will give you an instant new season wardrobe update.

HPI reminds buyers to watch out for dodgy sellers ‘adjusting’ car clocks The end of October marks the end of British Summer Time and, as we turn the clocks back, used vehicle history expert, HPI, reminds used car buyers to watch out for unscrupulous sellers turning the clocks back on their mileage readings. Known as ‘clocking’, this not only adds significant value to a vehicle, but it could lead to higher maintenance costs, as the vehicle might have more wear and tear than the buyer realises. “At this time of year we’re reminding used car buyers that it’s not just clocks in their houses that can be turned back. Car ‘clocking’ involves altering a vehicle’s mileage and is often done by used car sellers wanting to hike up a car’s value,” says Nicola Johnson, Consumer Services Manager of HPI. “1 in 20 vehicles checked by HPI* show a mileage discrepancy, a figure which has risen 10% in the past five years.” Stepping up the battle against ‘clockers’, HPI recently launched an e-Petition to DirectGov to close down so-called ‘mileage correction firms’ that are believed to be fuelling fraudulent activity. Mileage correction firms claim to offer a service to amend a vehicle’s mileage for legitimate reasons; however a report by the Office of Fair Trading (OfT) concluded that there were very few legitimate reasons for a vehicle’s mileage to be altered, despite there being over 50 companies offering such a service in the UK**. Johnson continues, “Whilst altering

a car’s mileage is not illegal in itself, not declaring that mileage change to a potential buyer is illegal. However, this doesn’t stop dishonest vendors who see clocking as a victimless crime and an easy way to make some extra cash. Of equal concern is the fact that vehicles with tampered mileages may end up missing out on vital servicing actions, which could make the vehicle breakdown, or potentially lead to an accident. Mileage correction firms make it even easier for these criminals, which is why we’ve launched our e-Petition to ask the Government to properly investigate the need for these companies, and help protect the car buying public.” The HPI Check draws upon HPI’s National Mileage Register (NMR), which contains over 150 million mileage records, giving buyers extra assurance that a vehicle checked by HPI has not been clocked. With access to more vehicle information than anybody else, HPI also confirms the vehicle description, whether it is currently recorded as stolen, been written-off by an insurance company, has had a plate change or is subject to outstanding finance. The HPI Check offers a financial guarantee in the event of the information it provides being inaccurate, offering added peace of mind to used car buyers. Johnson concludes, “As the clocks go back this autumn, we urge used car buyers to conduct an HPI Check to ensure the vehicle hasn’t had the miles turned back by clockers. An HPI Check comes

with a mileage check as standard to help buyers avoid paying over the odds for a vehicle that may have more wear and tear than they realise, which could represent a major safety issue.” HPI’S TIPS ON SPOTTING CAR CLOCKING * Check the service history - Check the mileages displayed in the service history and look for service stamps from a genuine dealer. Ideally the service invoices will accompany the service history. If in doubt, contact the servicing dealers and check the mileages they recorded at the time of the service. Speak to the previous keeper - Get in contact with the previous keeper (details can be found on the V5/logbook). They can identify the mileage of the vehicle when they sold it. Make sure this adds up with the current mileage. Trust your judgement - Check who the car was last registered to on the V5. Was it registered as a company car but has done less than 12,000 miles per year? Or is it 15 years old with only 20,000 on the clock? Look for any evidence that indicates clocking. Check the mileage - It has been known for clockers to wind back the mileage when you first view the vehicle and then return it to its original value once the transaction is complete. Make sure you check the mileage is the same when you pick up the vehicle. Look for signs of wear and tear - Does the wear and tear on the vehicle match its mileage? Be careful to look out for signs such as worn seats, steering wheels and other vehicle parts. Also look out for brand new easily replaceable parts; the wear and tear should be consistent with the vehicle’s displayed mileage. Conduct an HPI Check - HPI’s National Mileage Register has over 150 million mileages recorded on it, and can identify mileage discrepancies recorded against the vehicle. *Many of these signs could be innocent, so look for more than one of the above as possible evidence of clocking.

Brentwood, Essex, 23 October, 2012 – Following its movie debut in the UK crime thriller The Sweeney, the all-new Ford Focus ST has taken on its next starring role – this time as an official police patrol vehicle. While the five-door hot hatch used by Flying Squad detectives Regan and Carter was unmarked, this estate version gets the full law enforcement livery. The one-off demonstrator has been developed and engineered at Ford Special Vehicle Preparations (SVP) in Earls Colne, Essex. Equipped as a compact traffic car, it meets the latest National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA) standards for fast response vehicles inside and out. The light bar on the roof is all-LED, and the dashboard is fitted with a mobile data terminal (MDT) and screen to illustrate the Focus ST’s versatility for multi-role police use.
The car appeared at the National Association of Police Fleet Managers’ Conference and Blue Light Fleet Exhibition (NAPFM) in Peterborough. Terry Adams, Ford’s Direct Sales Manager for Police, Fire & Ambulance, commented: “With the Ford Focus ST being seen so publicly on cinema screens nationwide, the timing for this ‘official’ version couldn’t be better. At the NAPFM show we displayed the car’s crime-fighting talents to police transport managers and took bookings for demonstrations.” Also available for the public to buy, the all-new Ford Focus ST comes in five vibrant colours including Tangerine Scream and Spirit Blue. The car’s 2.0-litre 250PS EcoBoost engine means it can accelerate from 0-62 mph in just 6.5 seconds and has a top speed of 154 mph. The hatchback is priced from £21,995 with the estate costing from £23,095.

Round-UP
Duston Garage (Bosch Service) Star Award: Northampton Exiles who ended Drayton Grange’s 18-month unbeaten league run. Northants FA Lower Junior Cup: Another UCL giant fell in the Junior Cup, and three more were given a fright by lower ranked opposition. Welford and Corby Locos deserve honourable mentions despite their losing efforts, while James King Blisworth assumed the role of Jack against Woodford United Reserves. On paper the Friday night match between the UCL-based Southern League second string side and the Duston Garage Premier Division leaders, seemed an almighty mismatch based on comparative resources, but the hosts were soon humbled. Matt Curry settled Blisworth nerves with the opener, before Andy Seaton rounded out a convincing win with a brace. Welford faced off against Bugbrooke in a repeat of last season’s semi-final. Mark Edge netted from the spot as the match finished 1-1 at the end of normal time. Joe Ellard added a second in the extra period, but the holders replied with three further goals to progress 4-2. Corby Loco’s defeat was by an even tighter margin against Rushden & Higham. Ben Longhurst netted twice alongside Lee Genner in the original 90 minutes as the game finished 3-3. The UCL nicked it however with a fourth goal in extra time. Earls Barton slipped to a first defeat in all competitions against UCL Division One leaders Sileby Rangers. Kris Hall and Adam Bridgeford both netted for Barton, but the 28-goal strikeforce found the host’s net four times to progress. Orchard Park, Harpole and Volta all found UCL opposition too strong to contend with and bowed out. There was better news against North Bucks sides with Yardley Gobion and Silverstone both being eliminated. Kislingbury put four past Yardley without reply but Stanion found Silverstone much tougher opposition. Wasteful finishing from Bobby Drain saw the sides go onto half-time level. With fifteen minutes to go catastrophic defending allowed Silverstone to take the lead following a corner. Immediately following the restart Stanion were back on terms when Lee Martin fired home. Brian Farrell scored the winner in extra time, beating three defenders on the way through after linking up with Drain. For the three all-Combination ties it was a good day to be on the road, with each game ending in an away victory. Matt Coleman scored twice for Brixworth who eliminated Ringstead 3-1. Jamie Smith went one better for Burton, getting a hat-trick to eliminate derby opponents Ise Lodge. Stuart MacMichael scored twice for Pegasus, but it was not enough as this season’s surprise package Milton won 5-2 in extra time. Duston Garage (Bosch Service) Premier Division: Kettering Nomads recorded only a second win of the season against illness-ravaged Roade. Nomads took the lead in the first half, much against the run of play when a wind assisted free-kick was headed home by Ross Patrick at the far-post. Nomads doubled the advantage ten minutes into the second half when Patrick swept home from the left hand side of the area. Roade came close to cutting the deficit several times before Steve Carroll halved the arrears from the spot. Nomads held out and climbed out of the bottom three for the first time since returning to the top flight. Weldon struggled with conditions against bottom side Heyford, but secured the points with three second half goals from Ben Smith, Sean Fraser and Jay Arnold. Chris Dickens was also amongst the goals as Moulton cruised to victory against Khalsa.
His brace set Moulton on the way to a 4-0 success. Duston Garage (Bosch Service) Division One: Medbourne could not take advantage of the leader’s cup commitments and ascend to the summit after defeat by Wootton. Dom Williams netted for the Leicestershire side for which victory would guarantee top spot. Goals from Jamie Ellis, Joe Church, and Michael Ryan dented such lofty ambitions. Stanwick too failed to capitalise on the opportunity to climb the table after drawing with Denton. James Willmott scored for Stanwick but Rosco Cook equalised for Denton. Corby Everards did climb the table following a convincing win over struggling Gretton. Pete Callan and Steve Millar grabbed a hat-trick apiece as Everards put eight past Gretton. George Donnelly got in on the action putting one past his former club. Rothenberger Tools Division Two: The curse of top spot remains alive and well as Halloween approaches with Wollaston being unable to hang on again. Wilby toppled the leaders after a 4-2 derby victory. Lee Woolman and Martin Burse scored for the Vics, but Paul Southey fired home for Wilby, before Shane Hawkes hit a treble to seal the win. The reverse allowed Daventry Comms to ascend to first place. Comms made short work of previously hard-to-beat Rising Sun, doubling the host’s goals conceded total for the season in the nap success. Redstar returned to winning ways, ending a run of four games without a victory by pounding Clipston 5-1. Jamie Farrell got the first before George MacKay went goal crazy with four. Duston Garage (Bosch Service) Division Three: The Drayton Grange juggernaut was halted by Exiles. Sam Savage scored the only goal of the game to give the Northamptonbased side victory. The win ended Drayton Grange’s superb unbeaten run, and was the first league defeat since May 2011! Weedon were best placed to capitalise on any potential reverse for the leaders and made no mistake in taking the chance when it came. Shane Richardson found the net for opponents Great Doddington, but Ben Drinkwater struck twice to seal the win. Weedon move level on points with Drayton who remain on top by virtue of goal difference. Gary Broadway also scored twice for Ferrers but it proved in vain as Grange Park emerged 3-2 winners. Walgrave leapfrogged Ferrers in the table after a routine win away at Titchmarsh. Tommy Horsley, Jacob Garland, and Sam Bastin were all on the scoresheet for Walgrave. SPA slumped to a fourth successive defeat after going down 3-1 to FC Higham. Sam Scarman had put the Northampton side ahead but a Tom Martin hat-trick ripped the heart out of the strugglers. Gleneagles too languish at the wrong end of the table, but ended a run of successive defeats by taking a point from the tie with West Haddon. Shomat Choudhury was the West Haddon scorer in the draw. Duston Garage (Bosch Service) Division Four: All of a sudden Wilbarston have rediscovered the winning habit, making it two in a row after defeating Corby United. Marek Dybek scored three of the goals in the 6-1 win, while an own goal compounded the host’s misery. Like rivals United, Corby Kingswood have yet to record a win this season, and defeat against the leaders Borough Alliance extends that run to seven games. Alex Williams is fast becoming a fixture on the results sheet with both goals in Hellenic’s narrow 3-2 defeat to AFC Rothwell. With his goalscoring exploits so far, it can only be a matter of time before teams from the higher levels come hunting for his signature. Kettering Park Rover’s win over Albion Vikings was very much the tale

of two goalscorers. Scott McKinnon scored twice for the Vikings, put Gavin Ledgeway went one better to seal the points for the hosts. Blame for Desborough & Rothwell’s defeat to Corby Ravens meanwhile can be laid squarely at their own feet. Kane Robinson had put the hosts ahead before poor defending saw Michael Kerfoot equalise for the Ravens. An own goal then sealed the tie in the Corby side’s favour. Duston Garage (Great Wall Cars) Reserve Premier Division: Bugbrooke ‘A’ cemented the grip on top spot in emphatic style, smashing Ringstead Reserves 11-2. Second-placed Brixworth lost ground on the leaders after going down 2-1 to Spencer Reserves. Chris Norman and Kofi Dawes netted the goals for the visitors. Weldon and Blisworth both closed on Brixworth after taking points in their respective match-

es. Weldon’s leaky defence saw a two goal lead given them by James Ferguson squandered and allowed struggling Roade in for a point, while Blisworth enjoyed a 3-0 derby success over Milton. Dale Lewis opened the scoring before Rob Kirby added a brace. Harpole and ON Chenecks heaped more misery on struggling Pegasus and Moulton with respective wins. Harpole over came Pegasus 2-1, while Marcus Bergland and Carl White sealed Chenecks 2-0 success. Duston Garage (Great Wall Cars) Reserve Division One: Wootton climbed three places courtesy of victory in the basement battle with Everards. Creig Trasler was the pick of the scorers with three goals in the 7-3 win. Fellow strugglers Heyford and Orchard Park endured mixed fortunes. Heyford went down 6-0 to Earls Barton, while Orchard Park surprisingly

held second placed Corby Locos to a draw, Darren Taylor, Taylor Wilson and Aaron Bell all netting. Dan Barker put leaders Stanion on the way to a sixth successive league win with a hat-trick against Bugbrooke ‘B’. Indeed a mixed day for the top three was completed when Weldon ‘A’ lost to Kislingbury. Kislingbury scored twice before half time and added a third just after the restart. The Weldon fight back came to late to make any real difference. Pete Brennan scored on 85 minutes to reduce the arrears, and James Clark added a second in stoppage time. The clock ticked down however and Kislingbury held on. Old Grammarians climbed above Bugbrooke after defeating Medbourne. Duston Garage (Great Wall Cars) Reserve Division Two: Redstar produced a second successive 6-0 win to topple leaders Spratton. Lee McEwen
was the standout scorer picking up half of the goals himself. Stanwick and Wollaston both moved ahead of Spratton following respective victories over Volta and Wilby. Seven games in and the ‘goals against’ column makes sorry ready for bottom side Hellenic. James Blackwell scored five for Harborough ‘A’ in the 8-0 win, that takes the tally conceded to 48 so far. Richard Charlton was the Higham Town hero, scoring twice in the win over West Haddon. His goals were crucial in ending a run of four successive home defeats for the Lancaster Park outfit.

Premier newcomers Huntingdon picked up another win, 3-0 at AFC Kempston with Dave Townsend, Jamie Graham and Ben Sawyer sharing the goals. Yaxley won 2-1 at Wellingborough thanks to goals from Luke Pepper and Luke Hipwell, Ryan Cherry scoring the Doughboys consolation. A limited Division One programme saw some surprise results including first defeats for newcomers Oadby and Rushden & Diamonds. Diamonds
crashed 4-1 at Eynesbury who now climb above them into third place. Lee Bassett hit a hat trick for Rovers with Tom Coles completing the home tally and Jake Newman replying for Diamonds. Seventeen--year-old Jonathan Bull has represented Northamptonshire, the East Midlands and Great Britain as an archer this year; in May he brought a bronze team medal home from the Junior Europa Cup in Croatia and also a mixed team silver medal at the Junior European Championships in Denmark. He is a member of Targetcraft Archers in Burton Latimer. Dermot Bailey may have missed out on the Paralympics due to injury, but that didn’t stop him in 2012. He
was selected to play for GB in the Team World Cup; he won the British Open Doubles Championships as well as winning several other Open competitions. Dermot lives in Kettering and plays at Corby Tennis Centre. Finally, teenage Niamh Bailey’s skills as a heptathlete have seen her set personal and club bests at the U20’s Heptathlon Championships. Despite being nearly three years younger than the vast majority of the competition, Niamh is ranked third in the East Midlands. Niamh lives
in Kettering and attends Brooke Weston School. Councillor Steve Bellamy, portfolio holder for Kettering Borough Council, said: “Following a massively successful year in sport, this is a chance to showcase their wealth of talent, and with so many national and international stars in the running for the prestigious Arthur Nicholson trophy, it will be a close competition.” More information on the event can be found here: www.kettering .g ov.uk/ spoty12

New arena now open for adrenline junkies
> LASER TAG
SPLAT: Competitors can paint . . . not the town but themselves red at the new arena!
AS sports go, laser tag is perhaps recognised as being more of a fun leisure pursuit for stag parties and boys’ awaydays than a seriously competitive past-time. But there’s no doubting it has a great following. And now local adrenaline junkies won’t have too far to go to get their kicks: Alpha Bravo UK opened to the public this week in Corby. The company offers indoor paintballing using the best quality paintballs and latest high specification guns, giving the most advanced
paintball experience possible. Also available is laser tag/action tag, a game offered in a modern ultra-safe environment where groups can experience all the thrills of a team game, for anyone aged six to 60. This is a new amenity for the county, with the added advantage of it being indoors – so play can continue whatever the weather! The new venture will also be offering birthday parties, hen and stag parties and corporate team-building days. There is also a tie-up with
schools and community groups planned for the New Year. This is stage one of the project and the first of three arenas opening : Alpha Bravo is expanding its activities and a state-of the-art Karting track opens in December. Alpha Bravo UK is situated on Corby’s Commercial Road, close to Phoenix Retail Park. Open seven days a week, it is now taking bookings for Christmas. Call: 01536 660595 or visit: alphabravo.com
Blues take a beating from Spalding > RUGBY ROUND-UP KETTERING Rugby Club’s below-average form has continued through the last two weeks as they remain fourth from bottom of the Midlands 1 East Division. Their latest loss was a 27-10 beating at the hands of Spalding. Things were starting to look up for The Blues as they put high-flying Paviors to the sword a couple of weeks ago and followed up on that

with a win over Towcestrians. However, this latest loss to bottom of the table Spalding will perhaps be eye-opening. Meanwhile, S&L Corby have continued their 100 per cent start to their new season in the Midlands 3 East Division with a dramatic 13-12 victory over Northampton Casuals. Sitting pretty atop the league with a points difference of 102, S&L have also scored the second highest number of points collectively. Currently, they are one point ahead of sec-
ond-placed Stamford, who happen to be their next fixture this Saturday (November 3). Meanwhile, it’s still a depressing state of affairs for Corby Rugby Club, who were absolutely hammered and probably wish they hadn’t made the trip to St Neots, where they were humiliated 98-0 in the Midlands 4 East Division. They remain bottom of the table, yet to score any league points. They also have a points difference of -311, having only notched 24 points in their six games so far.

NORTHAMPTON Town Football Club will be taking part in a widely supported charity event next month. ‘Movember’, in which men grow a moustache throughout November, was started a number of years back to raise awareness of prostate cancer. The club will be holding several related events throughout the month, including a rebranded home tie against Morecambe, which they will be calling ‘Mohampton V Mocambe’.
THE Kettering and District Table Tennis League has started to take some interesting turns with first and second placed Higham Band A and Westfield A romping to astounding victories over difficult opponents. Kettering Town A were brushed aside by a dominant Westfield team that ran out 10-0 winners, thanks to some impressive singles displays from Steve Silk. Corby Town’s A team clung on to third place with a hard fought victory over Burton Baptist B.

D-Day for Kettering League will make final decision on Poppies’ future today > Football KETTERING Town FC will find out tonight whether they have met conditions set out for them to continue in the Evo-Stik Southern League this season. The full details of how the club could save, at the very least, its status as part of that particular league set-up were laid out at a meeting between the club and the league last Wednesday, October 24. Having already had a couple of games postponed, it was decided the next scheduled game, against St Neots, would also be postponed. Following the meeting, representatives from the league said: “Kettering Town’s league match on Saturday with St Neots Town is postponed. The club has been given a deadline of October 31 to satisfy certain conditions placed on them by the league. “There will no further comments until October 31 from the league.” While information on exactly what would be required from the club’s board has not been made possible, it is believed owner Imraan Ladak will be asked to prove
the financial security of the Poppies’ future. As of yet, the club’s direct representatives have been unavailable for comment. At the moment, with only ‘around six or seven’ senior players left to play, Kettering’s next game due to take place is against Barwell FC on Saturday, November 3. Meanwhile, the club has also confirmed that goalkeeper Laurie Walker’s contract has been cancelled with mutual consent. The former MK Dons shot-stopper has already signed on at Conference North side Brackley Town FC.

Rushden & Diamonds sparkle fades MANAGER Mark Starmer will be slightly disappointed with his AFC Rushden & Diamonds side as they fell to a 4-1 defeat against Eynesbury Rovers, following a hard fought 1-1 draw with Burton Park Wanderers. In-form Jack Wisniewski had given Diamonds a first-half lead against Wanderers. But a secondhalf equaliser from Kevin Fox and some spectacular goalkeeping from Liam Fox ensured the game would end in a draw. The harder news for fans came this weekend with a 4-1 loss to Eynesbury. A combination of clinical finishing by the hosts and a poor team performance from AFC Rushden & Diamonds saw them
lose their unbeaten league record. Lee Bassett bagged a hat-trick for the home side. Diamonds’ manager Mark Starmer gave Alex Deakin his first start in a league game for the club, in the absence of Aynsley McDonald, with Chris Hope taking over the captain’s armband. Young keeper Domenico Roggero was brought in to take a place on the bench as goalkeeper cover. The first minutes of the game saw the Diamonds pushing forwards but Jake Newman was struggling to read the home offside track, so the threats were quickly snuffed out. After ten minutes, the Diamonds went behind to what looked like classic wing-play on the left between Ducket and Freshwater – then a well-measured cross from

Freshwater on the left was met by the head of Lee Bassett to open the scoring. The second half started with some promise that the Diamonds might get back into the game, but Jake Newman was unable to take advantage of a defence-splitting pass as he seemed to hesitate and allow a defender to catch him and get in a challenge that forced him to shoot over. As in the first half, with about ten minutes on the clock, the hosts scored their second through Lee Bassett, with James Ducket again involved in the build-up on the left. For the next ten minutes, the Diamonds had their best spell of the game, although many of their moves broke down without a real threat on goal until a neat interchange be-

tween Ellwood and McBride saw keeper Wale concede a corner as he tipped McBride’s shot around the post. After having wasted several dead-ball opportunities earlier with short-corner and free-kick moves that failed to get the ball into the danger area, the Diamonds were finally able to take advantage of a clear height advantage over their hosts. The corner from Joe Merrill was headed home by Jake Newman as Chris Hope and Alex Deakin kept other defenders occupied. For a while, it looked like the Diamonds would get something from the game, as Ellwood set up Newman for another clear run into the area, but the striker was caught before getting in a clean strike. The Diamonds were preparing Jake Gillingwater to replace Sam Brown, but just before the move could be made, the Diamonds defender needed to deal with a looping ball forward with Lee Bassett bearing down on him in the centre of the field. But his weak header towards Shorunmu was pounced on by Bassett who neatly chipped the ball over the advancing keeper and into the net. Any thought that the Diamonds might have a second attempt at staging a fightback were ended as Tom Coles got ahead of Alex Deakin to score the fourth Eynesbury goal, heading home a cross from the right. ©extra newspapers ltd 2012
