Leanne steps up

This is the woman at the centre of the child sex grooming allegations in Corby. Leanne Mape, a 27 year old mother, claims that she was sexually abused by a number of Asian and white men from the age of eleven until the age of fifteen. She has now made a formal complaint the Independent Police Complaints Commission that Northamptonshire Police failed to investigate her claims properly. She also wants the actions of local Social Services’ officials be looked into because she was on the “at risk” list at the time she was a victim of alleged systematic sexual abuse. “I was child at the time I was abused, but no one appeared to care,” said Leanne. “I was on the at risk list because I was considered vulnerable. I should have been protected.” A medical report when she was 14 states she had been subjected to “systemic sexual abuse by a number of individuals over two to three years.” Leanne has decided to publicise her case because one of her alleged abusers has become prominent in the community. “He is considered to be a pillar of society, but I believe people should know about his past and what he did,” said Leanne. Leanne, who has set up a self-help group for abuse victims in the area called We Stand Together, admits that she was a very vulnerable and “mixedup” 11 year old. “I was taken advantage of by men who saw me as a sex object and passed me round,” she added. “As a child I was let down by a lot of people, including the police and social services.” A women’s group, led by Khatija Barday-Wood, is supporting Leanne’s fight for justice.

The perpetrators and victims are not necessarily people from one community. “Many victims stay silent because they are terrified to come into the open because of the adversity that it would create for them and their family members.” Khatija, whose organisation, “Eiman,” assists women from all walks of life facing difficulties, urged others in the area who had suffered similar abuse to come forward. “One wonders how many cases have been swept under the carpet,” she added. A spokesman for the IPCC confirmed that a complaint had been made on Leanne’s behalf and that it was being investigated.
Northamptonshire Police have launched a support scheme for people in Corby who feel vulnerable and would like someone to talk to help boost their confidence or feel safer. The scheme by the force’s Corby Safer Community Team is aimed across the community for people who feel a regular visit from a police community support officer would help them. To help get the project off the ground all local councillors have been contacted asking if they know of anyone in their ward who could benefit. PCSO Helen Murray, who is leading the initiative, says that aim is to build trust and confidence in the community and protect those most vulnerable. “This could cover anyone from elderly residents, persons who are disabled, have learning disabilities, mental health issues or hate crimes,” says PCSO Murray.
CROWDS are expected to turn out in their thousands next week to see the Olympic Torch make its way through our towns. Since it started its journey at Land’s End on May 19, the torch has clocked up hundreds of miles, taking a route has been devised to take the torch to within an hour of 95 per cent of people in the UK over 70 days. Its journey will culminate in its arrival at the Olympic Stadium on July 27 for the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics. On Monday, July 2, the torch will set off from Northampton towards Wellingborough and from there, travel through Isham to Kettering before moving on to Geddington and then Corby, from where it will leave the county and finish the day’s journey in Leicester. PUPILS at a Burton Latimer school have helped achieve a new world record after uploading selfportraits onto an arts project website. The children at St Mary’s CofE Primary School took part in Face Britain, an attempt to achieve a Guinness World Record organised by the Prince’s Foundation for Children and the Arts. St Mary’s pupils were among 201,948 children and teenagers across the UK who took part in the project that took the title for the most artists working on the same art installation. The children’s self portraits were combined to form an image of HM The Queen that was projected onto Buckingham Palace for three nights in April, to coincide

It’s carnival time! A chance to help out > Desborough
THIS year’s Desborough carnival takes place this week, starting on Monday with the traditional quiz and ending on Saturday with the parade. The carnival Court was chosen by the pupils of the Havelock Schools. Carnival Queen for this year is Bethany McKinnon, 11, with her attendants Charlotte Johnson, 10, Destiny Holland, 7 and pageboy Adam Cooper, 7. On Carnival Day, Saturday June 30, the parade assembles in Dunkirk Avenue at 1.30pm for judging ready to move off at 2pm around the town and finishing in the Recreation Ground. A variety of stalls and sideshows have been arranged and bouncy castles, children’s playground and a full programme of events in the arena. Attractions this year include a flying display
by owls, dancing displays and a Punch and Judy show. Music during the afternoon on the stage will be supplied by Happy Jazz. Carnival entry forms are available around the town and on the carnival website. Tickets for the raffle are available now around the town. Carnival chairman Michael Crick said: “ The committee have been working hard to arrange another great day for Desborough. We would like to thank everyone for their support and ask that we get support on the day to raise a large sum again for charities in the town. Praise for young offenders team Community team impresses government inspectors > County THE efforts of a communitywide team to help reduce reoffending among young people have been praised by government inspectors. Northamptonshire’s youth offending team (YOT) is in top 25 per cent of inspected YOTs, achieving a sustained reduction in the frequency and seriousness of offending by young people. A recent inspection also found that the young people under supervision are robustly safeguarded with appropriate action taken to reduce the risk of harm to themselves or others. The Youth Offending Service is a partnership of local authorities, probation, health, police and training services and involves input from local community and voluntary groups. The aim of the service is to divert
young people from criminal and anti-social behaviour and support them towards education or employment During a rigorous inspection last month, inspectors from Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Probation reviewed a sample of 62 youth offending cases, considering how safeguarding, risk of harm and the likelihood of reoffending are addressed in the county Northamptonshire scored higher than the national average in each of the three categories, achieving a score of 80 per cent against a national average of 68 per cent in safeguarding, 68 per cent against a 62 per cent national average in risk of harm to others and 76 per cent against an average of 71 per cent on preventing young people reoffending. Councillor Andrew Grant, Northamptonshire County Council’s cabinet member for educa-
tion, learning and skills, said: “This report confirms that our approach to working with young people in the youth justice system does get results. We have a team working hard to support those young people and help them tackle and overcome the challenges that originally drew them towards crime and anti-social behaviour. “The positive inspection is a testament to the work of the many organisations, local community groups and individuals who work with or alongside the YOT in supporting some of the most challenging and vulnerable young people in the county and equipping them with the skills and experience to turn their lives round.” If you have any issues in your local community contact us on 01604 931117 we would like to hear from you.

RUSHDeN LAKES: A model shopping and leisure facility
Council go-ahead for Lakes plan > Rushden COUNCILLORS in East Northamptonshire have agreed the renewal of plans for the Rushden Lakes development. The owners, LxB have purchased around 250 acres on the outskirts of Rushden, adjacent to the A45, including 30 acres of developable land and have announced plans to create a £50m retail park that would include 20 shops. It is hoped the development would create between 300 and 1,500 jobs during construction and when completed, and the developers are looking at ways of linking the site to Rushden town centre, with either a link bus service or a footbridge leading into the town centre.
The finance package includes the costs of a dedicated Town Centre Manager to act as a conduit between the surrounding towns and high streets and Rushden Lakes. Opinion has been divided on the scheme, with Wellingborough Borough Council supporting the plans, stating that the majority of the public in Wellingborough were in favour of the development , but other councils, including Kettering and Corby, have come out against the scheme. Earlier this month East Northamptonshire District Council agreed that the developers could renew earlier plans which will enable the project to move forward.

Nigel Lesmoir-Gordon began writing while still a student and subsequently published poems and short stories in the UK, the USA and in France before his interest in film took him to the London School of Film Technique. From film school he joined the industry as a trainee edi-
tor working on TV commercials, then moved to the BBC as an editor, cutting dramas and documentaries. Nigel is recognised for his ability to make difficult and technical subjects accessible through his thought-provoking films. CHILDREN from Loddington Primary School were among 4,554 primary school children from the East Midlands who went on the march for safer roads. The children were out last week as part of the UK-wide Giant Walking Bus, coordinated by Brake, the road safety charity, which calls on drivers to help protect children on foot in their communities by slowing down around schools, homes and shops. Across the country, more than 120,000 children from 600 schools joined the attempt to beat the Guinness World Record for the largest walking bus, set at 119,697 through the same event in 2009.

PLANNING permission for a long-awaited £30m bypass in Isham has been extended for a further 10 years. The A509 Isham bypass between Wellingborough and Kettering was first approved in 2006, but financial constraints have meant that no further action has been taken. Northamptonshire County Council said it was unable to secure funding for the project due to budget cuts and now the council has agreed to extend planning permission. Conservative-controlled Northamptonshire County Council chief executive, Paul Blantern, said: “The A509 Isham bypass remains one of the county council’s most important roads. “We are committed to doing as much as we can to advance this key project for the county but the scheme will not be considered for funding until 2015 at the earliest.”
Funding was cut from the project following the government’s spending review in 2010. Graham Rait, chairman of the Isham Bypass Action Group, said: “We are not sure if we will see the bypass built here any time soon, but we have got to keep working on it.”

Consider deferring > County TOP rate tax payers should consider taking action now to take full advantage of the reduction of the top rate in the Chancellor’s most recent Budget, say tax experts at Moore Stephens Chartered Accountants. The top rate was reduced from 50 per cent to 45 per cent, to take effect from 6 April 2013. Where possible, taxpayers currently caught by the 50 per cent rate should consider deferring income until the 2013/14 tax year. Owner-managers, for instance, can defer the declaration of dividends until after 5 April 2013 and thus reduce their effective tax rate from 36.11 per cent to 30.6 per cent. From the other perspective, tax rate cuts and increases in allowances such as the news that the personal allowance is to rise to £9,205 from April 2013 - have to be funded and so George Osborne announced a new limit on all currently uncapped income tax reliefs from that date. The amount of relief that can be claimed will be limited to the greater of £50,000 or 25 per cent of the taxpayer’s annual income. Reliefs that are already limited, such as Enterprise Investment Scheme and Venture Capital Trusts, will not

Torch set to light up towns Region finally gets to see the Olympic flame > County THOUSANDS of people are expected to line the streets when the Olympic torch relay reaches our area next Monday. Since the announcement was made earlier this year, planning has been going on for the big day, July 2, when the torch will pass through Wellingborough, Kettering and then Corby, on its way from Northampton to Leicester. Among those carrying the torch will be Sue Miller from Corby and Alex Van Vliet from Irthlingborough who were nominated for their involvement in foster caring. These are just some of the local people involved, and in turn, they are just some of the 8,000 torch bearers who were chosen to see the Olympic Torch Relay safely through more than 1,000 cities, towns and villages in the UK. The Flame route has been devised to take the torch to within an hour of 95 per cent of people in the UK, the Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey during the 70-day relay. It will enable local communities to shine a light on the best their area has to offer. The towns and cities hosting evening celebrations, the island visits, and all of the communities on route.
Students have a vital role > Tresham College A GROUP of students have been asked to help steward part of the east Northamptonshire leg of the Olympic torch relay. The second year students from Tresham’s BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Unformed Public Services will be working with security firm G4S as part of the Bridging the Gap project. The students have completed two qualifications during their second year: Level 2 Understanding Stewarding at Spectator Events and the Level 2 Award in Door Supervision. The Bridging the Gap project aims to address the shortages in the security industry and has been aimed at students in further education colleges across the country. The courses aim to ensure that students are equipped with all the skills and knowledge they need to enjoy the experience of helping to de-
liver a safe and secure Games. Uniformed Public Services Tutor, Clive Skingsley, helped Tresham students to co-ordinate work through G4S, the company who are responsible for the security at the Olympics. As part of the process, students have had to undergo interviews at Upton Park in London. Around half of the group who have undertaken the training have been interviewed and offered places to be part of this once-in-a-lifetime event. Mr Skingsley said:”This was a great opportunity for our students to take part in this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Hopefully it will allow some of them to kick start a career in an industry they might not have originally thought of, and the skills they have learnt already will also allow them to improve their overall employability chances once they have completed the course this summer.”

An electric atmosphere among the 10,000 crowd by the time the Queen arrived outside the Corby East Midlands International Pool, and with the sound of bagpipes filling everyone’s ears as they formed a sea of red, white and blue. Leader of Corby Borough Council, Cllr Tom Beattie, said: “What a fantastic day for Corby. I have to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped FLAGS GALORE: Thousands thronged the streets to greet Her Majesty make the Queen’s visit a great success. The atmosphere generated by the crowds who lined the royal route was nothing I have ever experienced and probably won’t again, so thank you to everyone who turned out. “The Queen clearly enjoyed herself from start to finish. Her staff made numerous compliments and were full of enthusiasm for the efforts that Corby made and we have also been congratulated by the police for the first-class planning and organisation that went in to running the event. The Third Man A letter from Corby Council Leader Tom Beattie To The Editor, After reading Corby/Tesco cash-flow by The Third Man last week (Wednesday 13th June) I felt like I needed to address the inaccuracies in the article. Can I begin by confirming that Corby Borough Council has not lost control of spending as the article would su gest. Our budget has been signed off by the District Auditor and the Council finds itself in a healthy position. In regards to the projects highlighted in the article we are fully aware that there has been certain issues su rounding some of the Council’s projects, however these are old issues and there has been a clear change in the way these projects are being handled to rectify these situations. You are correct in stating that the Council has been criticised for some part of the handling of the Kingswood project however I would like to point out that the Kingswood project is near completion and house sale income and possible costs being offset could now result in a receipt to the Borough Council close to, and possibly over, its original estimate of £2.2million. Therefore this all looks positive in giving the residents of Kingswood a new community they can be proud of and the Borough Council a much welcomed financial boost. We would also like the comments that are stated as to have come from the District Auditor in an apparent view of the Corby Cube building to be rebutted. There has been no report completed as of yet by The Audit Commission. It is disappointing that The Queen’s visit, which was an absolute success with thousands turning out and showing the ‘true spirit of Corby’, was used in the article. The visit is just one of many things that Corby is achieving and can be proud of, including: • The new A43 Link Road that started on site last week • Our new 6 screen cinema is soon to start constrution. • The addition of new homes to several sites across the Borough, providing new communities in Oakley Vale, Little Stanion, Priors Hall and more. • The third refurbishment project on our sheltered accommodation nearing completion. • A new application for 21 new, modern homes in Kingswood • Our Urgent Care Centre that is soon to open its doors. • The Tesco Regeneration Partnership that just a couple of weeks ago, the Council, Tresham and the Job Centre signed up to to help long term unemployed back to work. • The Olympic Torch travelling through the Borough on 2nd July. Comment AS COUNCIL LEADER, part of Cllr Beattie’s role is to promote Corby and he is entitled to paint a glossy picture of the town and its development. But he, along with his colleagues, also has a responsibility, as custodian of ratepayers’ money, to conduct the council’s business with transparency and openness. Cllr Beattie in his letter to “The Extra,” following an article on the council’s finances, says he “needed to address the inaccuracies in the article,” particularly that “the council had lost control of spending.” Cllr Beattie states categorically: “Can I begin by confirming that Corby Borough Council has not lost control of spending, as the article would suggest. Our budget has been signed off by the District Auditor and the council finds itself in a healthy position.” This statement may raise eyebrows in certain quarters, as the council has total debts in the region of £38 million (well above the government’s recommended figure) and there were repeated delays in the accounts being signed off --- but only in part. The district auditor’s reports on the Cube development, the Tesco land sale (of which more later) and the Rockingham Triangle project are still outstanding. Cllr Beattie accuses the article of racking over “old issues” after admitting that “there has (sic) been certain issues surrounding some of the council’s projects.” With respect, they are not old issues. The Cube, some £12 million over budget, still has underlying structural fault and safety issues which need to be remedied and, as yet, has not been granted a building certificate. Not to mention where the money will come from for long-term future maintenance. Concerns relating to the Kingswood housing development only arose in January this year---six months ago. Cllr Beattie has the good grace to admit that the council has been criticised for “some part” of the handling of the project. However, in adopting an optimistic tone about the future of the Kingswood development, he is very careful in his use of words. He writes: “…the Kingswood project is near com-
pletion and house sale income and possible costs being offset could now result in a receipt to the Borough Council close to, and possibly over, its original estimate of £2.2 million.” Cllr Beattie’s use of “possibly” and “could” show a distinctive lack of clarity and could be interpreted as showing that the council has no idea what the final figures will be. In relation to the Cube, Cllr Beattie states that “there has been no report completed as of yet by the Audit Commission.” He is correct. The scathing criticisms of the Cube project were made in an internal report, endorsed and signed by his Labour colleague who is chair of the council’s Overview and Scrutiny Committee. If the criticism is that strong from his fellow councillors then the independent District Auditor’s comments are likely to make extremely interesting reading. But Cllr Beattie in his letter appears to deliberately ignore any reference to the revelation that the council’s coffers could have been swelled by several million pounds over the sale of a piece at Soothill, as part of the Tesco site. The council owned plot was sold for a little over £82,000 without restriction in 2010. It now forms part of the Tesco site. A subsequent independent valuation of the land in 2011 produced a base price tag of £4 million and an upper figure of £8 million on the granting of planning permission. Supporting this valuation was the sale of an adjoining piece of land needed for the Tesco development for a guaranteed minimum figure of £774,000 an acre, valuing it at £3.5 million. So why was the 11 or so acres of council owned land sold for such a paltry £82,031? Who authorised the sale of such a valuable council asset and why for so little, having regard to the council’s parlous amount of debt? Asked why he had not addressed the land sale in his letter, Cllr Beattie said that it was “a complicated story and things are not black and white.” He added that the council was “acutely aware of some of issues surrounding different valuations of the land.” Just as well, as Corby ratepayers must be wondering what is going on within the council offices.
Concerns over finances raised with the government by Tory councillor ERIC PICKLES, the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, has been briefed on the financial turbulence which has over shadowed the council in recent months by Conservative leader, David Sims. “This is the second meeting I have had with the Secretary of State where I have brought the finances of the borough to his attention,” said Cllr Sims. “These are very serious issues and raise a great deal of concern.” In his meetings Cllr Sims has spoken about the problems surrounding redevelopment and regeneration in the
town where budgetary controls appear to have been lax or non-existent. The Secretary of State has power of intervention where there is evidence of financial impropriety in the administration of a local council’s affairs. In 2010 Mr Pickles directly intervened in the running of Doncaster Council appointing three commissioners to oversee the council’s operations. Said Cllr Sims: “The Secretary of State indicated he was aware of the problems in Corby, but was waiting for the report of the District Auditor before taking any action, if necessary.”

EXTRA PEOPLE A WEIGHT loss expert from Kettering has struck gold for the exceptional work she does in helping more than 280 people in the area to lose weight every week. Jayne, who runs the Balance Health Club Slimming World groups every week, was presented with a Gold Award at the national slimming club’s annual awards ceremony in Birmingham on June 16th because of her success in supporting slimmers to reach their dream weight. The accolade is awarded in recognition of achieving the highest levels of support for slimmers, and giving expert advice to help the people of Kettering reach their weight loss goals week after week.

Ian Sampson talks to Luke Manning on how he is now setting his sights on rejuvenating the fortunes of Corby Town FC. With a glittering football playing career behind him as a central defender for Northampton, Sunderland and Tottenham, and a managerial CV that includes a spellbinding triumph over Liverpool at Anfield, You always want to be a footballer when you grew up? I was always interested in football when I was young but my first ambition was to be a joiner. My uncle was a builder and joiner and I wanted to be like him, but by the time I was 15 or 16 I knew then I wanted to be a footballer. Were you a better joiner or footballer? Footballer by a long shot. I left school and worked for the council for a year on a joinery course, and it just wasn’t for me. When was that moment when you thought 'I've made it' as a player? I was a non-league player for five years, and played for Bridlington Town and Goole Town, before I was scouted by Sunderland and signed for them at the age of 21. Once you sign for a club like Sunderland, you feel like you’ve made it. But in reality it was my first league game in 1990 when I really began to make my mark.
Can you remember your debut well? Of course. That’s the sort of thing you don’t forget. It was at home at Roker Park against Brighton and we won 4-2. It should have been 5 – I had a goal disallowed. Why Corby Town? It just feels like a good fit. They liked my experience with Northampton Town as both a player and a manager, and the club matched my ambition to start from scratch and build something. It potentially has a chance to be a good team, especially if we can attract more of the fans that travel through Corby – from both England and Scotland. Describe Corby Town FC. It’s an ambitious club with a great fan base, and one that can be a massive part of the community and grow into a top level non-league club. If money was no object, what would your dream team be? Joe Hart would have to be in goal, with Gerard Pique joining me in the centre of defence. Ashley Cole and Danny Alves would be the wing backs, and I’d have Xavi, Iniesta and Alonso in the midfield. Up front would be Ronaldo and Gomez, and of course Messi.
That team would see Corby up the league. What's your favourite place in the world? Florida. We’ve had some great family holidays there and every time you go back you find something different. The place has got it all – good weather, nice golf courses and something to keep all the family interested. DeNiro or Pacino? It’s got to be DeNiro. He’s done the best films overall and I love Cape Fear. What's been your favourite sporting moment over the years? On a personal level it was winning at Wembley with Northampton Town as a player, or beating Liverpool at Anfield with Northampton as a manager. In the wider world it was actually cricket, when England won the Ashes under Michael Vaughan Favourite food and drink? A glass of Sauvignon Blanc and a Chinese. What do you do in your free time? Free time? I don’t really have any free time. But if I can find any, I like to play golf or go to the theatre. Are you any good at golf? I can hold my own. I’ve got a handicap of 11.
What’s been your golfing career highlight? There hasn’t been one yet. Who has Roy Hodgson left out of his England squad that he shouldn't have? I don’t think he’s left anyone out of the squad. They’ve gone down the route of selecting people that have played for the under 21s, and moved them up to the main team. It’s a trait of the Spanish teams and they’re not doing badly at the moment. Is being a modern football manager now just a merry-goround that stops when, rather than if, you get sacked? Fifty percent of all first time managers never get another job, so it’s not quite the merry-goround where you just walk from one job into another. It’s stressful. You know that unless you are Sir Alex Ferguson or Arsene Wenger that as soon as you start the job that you’re going to get the sack. But it’s a passion. You can’t help it. And finally... if you could be invisible for the day, what would you do? I’d go to an England training session and watch Roy Hodgson work. It would be great to watch how he coaches the team and pick up a few tips.

And as the rather watchable Euro 2012 rumbles on with Roy’s England attempts at restoring pride to dear old Blighty, and the Germans (surely the Manchester United of the national teams) consistently reaching the latter stages of the tournament, passions are still running high. Spain has also delighted with its mint, lime and tangerine flavoured tic tacs. Apologies, we mean 'tika tak'a of course. So try telling the many balling Spanish fans left blubbing into their Paellas, the sobbing England fans left crying into their pints, the overdramatic Italians left blubbering into their minestrone that this is just a funny old sport. Days, weekends, summers and seasons can be ruined by the result of this noble and ignoble game. Oh! The thrills and spills of being an England fan. Even our lady kin get stirred into appreciation of a game they have no interest in at any other time in the footballing calendar. Although it must also be said, after a few glasses of vino tinto, that the passion and patriotism can lead to profanities that would make a docker blush – especially the improper songs about the referee, in front of the kids. Major football tournaments invariably offer another delightful chapter in the fabled story of Sepp Blatter. This year is no different and the always-one-step-aheadof-the-game Blatter is at it again. Goal line technology he says! The man is a thought leader of our times. It’s almost as though he can think of things before us mere mortals
have even dreamt of them. So as swathes of goalpost manufacturers go to Wimbledon to try and steal the magic ingredient behind Hawk-Eye, we settled down on the chesterfield to see what other innovations we could lift from other sports to make the beautiful game slightly more appealing. First up has to be cheerleaders. Ah yes, our American cousins have got one thing right at least. There can be absolutely no argument against cheerleaders. And let’s stay on that side of the Atlantic for a moment more, where we should perhaps consider taking a leaf out of the National Hockey League’s book and introduce a sin bin. We would hate to step on tradition and see this affect the iconic yellow and red cards though, so our sin bin would not be for bad behaviour. Ours would be for punishing bad haircuts or the most obscene of those frankly nauseating (and ubiquitous) footballer tattoos. Raul Meireles would spend most of the game in the sin bin on both counts. Then we would have the diving-style score
panel for unnecessary theatrics. A five-person panel would sit at a desk on the touchline observing the antics, and whenever a player falls dramatically clutching his face (after being lightly grazed on the stomach); the panel can lift their cards and give a score out of 10. An average of eight or over for any transgression leads to an immediate yellow card. Finally, there could be a pit lane. We call for the abolishment of half time and instead players can refuel, receive tactical instructions from the gaffer and have a quick rub with the magic sponge in the pit lane.
As managers sweat over when to strategically call players in from the field, it would also be the perfect place for Mario Balotelli to go and have a sulk. Or let off fireworks. As for now, it’s time to get back and watch the rest of Euro 2012 with a cold, crisp beer and vuvuzela in hand. Then it’s time for Wimbledon and we are starting to wonder how they are going to play every single game of the tournament in their allotted time, all on one court under the roof. Unless of course the wettest drought in history decides to behave itself.

Dear..EXTRA It is very disappointing that somebody has taken it upon themselves to try and repair the grass verges in Cottingham without going through the proper County Council channels. Having had discussions with officers at the County Council I found out that the cost to the council of putting the defective job right was £20,000.00. Of course I appreciate that whoever has decided to tarmac the verges was probably only trying to help, but much like the situation with the Tunwell Lane tree, they have fallen foul of proper procedure and have ended up doing more harm than good. Undecided: Is this something sweet or sour!
One of my horrors of commuting is standing ( because whoever gets a seat ?) on the train next to the noisy eater of strong smelling burger. Normally a man, he munches and belches his way through this manufactured muck and leaving some down his front and the rubbish on the floor. Charming. So believe me when I say I can understand people’s horror of feeding in public. At my school we were taught that eating in the street was practically a crime, and a sure sign of poor breeding! But I don’t get the whole concern about breastfeeding in public. I have been a mother for 19 years and have helped at various drop
in clinics, coffee mornings and the like. In all this time I have never seen anything as gross as the yob slobbering burger. Is it the thought of breast on display? I am sure that if you tried really hard, and went up really close up, and waited, you might get a millisecond glimpse of a nipple, but really, if you are that desperate go to the supermarket and look at the magazines on public display, it would be much easier. I have seen more breasts on show in skimpy outfits in the town centre on Saturday lunchtime. I don’t see anyone campaigning about covering these up. I know it is healthier for mum and
baby to breastfeed and saves the tax payers zillions on long term healthcare. The milks always on tap and always the right temperature, so baby doesn’t have to wait, so less likely to be crying in hunger, one thing less to bother others. It’s jammed full of good stuff for babys development. So explain to me what the problem is. Perhaps it is you that has the problem? Running sessions > Jogging ANYONE looking to start jogging is being invited to join one of 45 jogging groups in Northamptonshire that are welcoming complete beginners to their groups to give it a go and learn to jog in June. The 45 jogging groups are all part of Jog Northants, a countywide programme which is part of Run England, a national programme supported by England Athletics. The programme has been running for two years now has
helped more than 750 people start running, It has seen people start off jogging for 30 seconds and walking for 30 seconds who end up completing 5ks, 10ks and even half marathons and marathons. Jog Northants has found that people often don’t participate because of lack of confidence, not knowing where to start and not wanting to go out on their own. The led jogging groups are organised by 38 active leaders who lead the groups and help people achieve their goals, lose weight, get fit and have fun.
This week, until Sunday July 1, Jog Northants is encouraging anyone to come and try one of the groups. Youngsters get taste of Paralympic Games Taster sessions to encourage more young disabled sports stars > County YOUNG people with disabilities have the chance to try wheelchair basketball, swimming or athletics as part of Playground to Podium (P2P), one of the largest legacy programmes from this year’s Paralympic Games. P2P aims to encourage more young people with disabilities into sport – whether just for their own enjoyment or it could be the first step to representing their county or even their country at their chosen sport. The next sessions are swimming on Sunday, July 9 at Duston School Swimming Pool from 1pm to 3pm and athletics on Saturday, July 16 at Corby
Athletics Club, Rockingham Triangle Sports Stadium from 6.30pm to 8pm. Northamptonshire Sport is coordinating the programme within the county where young people with disabilities are encouraged to try any of five Paralympics sports. Sessions in table tennis and football took place in May. Graeme Wilson, Northamptonshire Sport Disability Development Officer said: “Most of us will watch this year’s Paralympics and marvel at the level of ability on show without thinking twice about how these athletes start out in their sports. “P2P provides the opportunity for young people with disabilities in Northants to start this
journey and it would be great to see them progress to whatever level they are capable. Whether it be a local club, or the ultimate dream of becoming a Paralympian themselves!” Each session is run by coaches from the relevant National Governing Body (NGB) and local clubs of the sport. Each of the sports involved in the P2P programme has slightly different age and disability eligibility requirements. Adam Moreton, who was nominated Northamptonshire Sport Maker of the Year has been actively working within three sport participation programmes in Northampton. Anyone over the age of 16 can become a Sport Maker. Register at www.sportmakers.co.uk then come along to a free interactive workshop. Men score a decisive win > Bowls
BOWLS Northamptonshire Men’s Section scored a thoroughly professional win by 24 shots over Hertfordshire. The men of Jackson Grundy Northamptonshire Bowls entertained Hertfordshire in the Inter County ‘Middleton Cup’ competition at a venue not used before for these events, Northampton Whyte Melville BC, and they obviously found it very much to their liking for, despite being a few shots adrift after five ends, which were quickly wiped out over the next few ends, and an ephemeral effort by Hertfordshire at around the 13 end mark which gave them a lead of eight shots, the County really got stuck in over the last seven or so ends to not only wipe out the deficit quickly but to go into a substantial lead. The County was helped in this surge by Vernon Gearey’s rink picking up a five on the 15th end, followed by a run of seven shots without reply, Paul Broderick’s rink picking up a count of four on the 18th end, and Jamie Walker’s rink making a recovery from 6-19 down after 13 ends by picking up a run of 11 shots without reply. At the same time Neil Corbyn’s rink was
maintaining its dominance by allowing its opponents to collect just two shots over the last 10 ends while conceding 25 shots. Final score was Northamptonshire 130 shots (18 pts) – Hertfordshire 106 shots (4 pts). This win gives the County a chance of progressing to the Quarter Finals, subject to winning against Cambridgeshire on the July 7, 2012, and of course subject to other County’s results. St Neots BC, Cambridgeshire, was the venue for the ladies of Jackson Grundy Bowls Northamptonshire Women’s Section when they met Essex Ladies in the Inter-County Johns Trophy’competition. Unfortunately for the County it was not a successful visit as they suffered a 26 shots defeat, although they had two winning rinks and therefore collected four points. Essex started off very well and by the fifth end had posted a 12 shot lead, and as the game progressed their lead steadily increased and by the three quarter stage had reach 32 shots, and despite a good effort by the County ladies over the last quarter, they could only stem the increase, and indeed to reduce it to the losing margin.
