The Lakes development’s first major retailer?

M&S STRATFORD: Could a Lakes store could look something like this? THE Government go-ahead for the £50m Rushden Lakes retail and leisure development has been followed by confirmation from Marks and Spencer that it will be among the first retailers to move to the site. An M&S spokesman told Extra Local: “We are always looking at new store locations and there are plans for a new Marks & Spencer store to open within the Rushden Lakes development. “The development is in its very early stages, so we hope to be able to provide further information later in the year.” And as Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Eric Pickles, was given a personal tour of the site at Skew Bridge earlier this month, Cllr Steven North, leader of East Northamptonshire Council, said of the go-ahead: “This is great news for East Northamptonshire as it will provide local people with a better retail offer on their doorstep as well as new jobs and a regenerated site that has become a blot on the landscape. “The leisure opportunities will add to the Nene Valley project that encourages people to make the most of the river and help to give better access through a footbridge and cycleway across the A45. “Rushden Lakes will complement rather than compete with the High Street, and many local retailers are keen to see this happen as it will bring more people to Rushden than ever before.” But it won’t just be people who use the redeveloped area. It’s for the birds, too!

LIVING WITH HISTORY: Tori from Albion Archaeology and Andrew Brown, head teacher at Higham Ferrers Junior School, with school pupils Mackenna Lues, Anthony Fraser and Millicent Manuel. PUPILS at Higham Ferrers Junior School have been discovering how their neighbours used to live . . . about 2,500 years ago! The youngsters were treated to a special presentation after archaeological findings dating back to the Iron Age were discovered at a nearby housing development. Investigations by Albion Archaeology took place on an area of land off Station Road in Higham Ferrers, where David Wilson Homes is building the Lancaster Gardens development of 88 houses, for opening in 2015. Following the excavation, it was revealed that the site contained the remains of two roundhouses together with a significant number of small storage pits, likely to have held grain through the winter to support a small farming community. A large amount of pottery and animal bones was also found, dating back 2,500 years to a time when settled communities first began to develop in this part of Northamptonshire.
