FOR THE LOVE OF CHELSEA Birthday tribute from cancer victim’s sister
Last Saturday (September 1st) over 400 people sat in the walled garden and foot tapped and sang their hearts out with pride to music by Rushden Windmill Band, directed by Stephen Bell, and singers from local operatic groups all in aid of the charity Rushden Mind. Proceeds are expected to be
more than £1,000 and will go to the charity being supported by town mayor Marian Holloman during her year in office. She said: “The night was a resounding success and I would like to thank everyone who supported it, including my events team at Rushden Council. They all did a fantastic job. “Everyone thoroughly en-
joyed themselves and people came along with their flags, chairs, picnics and bottles of wine. It was a marvelous occasion.” All the usual favourites were sung with gusto, including Land of Hope and Glory and Jerusalem, the promenaders joined in with Abba top ten hits and a foot tapping selection -
All That Jazz. A marching drill by members of the 858 Rushden Squadron of the Air Cadets under the direction of Sgt Dominic Chisholme added to this truly British occasion. Cllr Hollomon said: “The drill by the Air Cadets was terrific and I would like to thank all the boys and girls for taking part.”
A TEENAGER from Irthlingborough is shaving her head in memory of her little sister Chelsea, who lost a battle with cancer aged three. Thirteen-year-old Shannon Knighton is hoping to raise more than £1,000 for the Chelsea’s Angel’s charity – set up to increase awareness of childhood cancer, as a tribute to little Chelsea. The headshave takes place on Monday, September 9, which would have been Chelsea’s eighth birthday. It takes place at Through The Looking Glass Hair Salon in High Street, Irthlingborough, at 4.30pm. A family spokesman said: “This is a brave act from a young lady who has seen first-hand what cancer does to people, especially little children.” Chelsea lost her brave battle with rare childhood cancer neuroblastoma in August 2009. The family set up the charity to help children diagnosed with the condition and other rare cancers. Supporters are being encouraged to give £2, by texting ‘SHAZ13 £2’ (or change the amount to whatever you wish to donate) to 70070.
