MORE than 100 police have been involved in raids on the Hemmingwell estate in Wellingborough, after being tipped off that rival drugs gangs were using guns to intimidate each other. A quantity of drugs and a firearm were seized from various addresses in the 6am simultaneous raids and three people were taken into custody by police. Detective Chief Inspector Nick Lyall said later: “I think there has always been problems of violent crime and drug dealing on that estate – a lot of it is kept within the rival groups and individuals down there, but we are seeing an increased level of drugs dealing and violence.

“Following on from the raids, we have a number of activities taking place on the estate – community officers, local officers and beat officers and PCSOs are patrolling – there are high visibility patrols to reassure the public and explain what’s happened and why we are taking the action we are. We will be working with our partners – Wellingborough council and crime prevention partners – to support the local residents and deliver any crime prevention advice.” The operation was one of the biggest of its kind in the country for several years. LOCAL businesspeople have been welcoming news that the long delay is over for the decision on the Rushden Lakes development of shops and leisure facilities – building works have been given permission to get started. Alan Piggot, Wellingborough Chamber of Commerce’s vice-president, described the news as ‘wonderful’ and added: “Today’s decision represents the dawn of a new era – North Northamptonshire is on the up. “This is wonderful news for the whole area. It will create jobs, putting more money in people’s pockets, and will prevent £100 million of ‘leakage’, where money is spent out of the county. “The chamber’s survey carried out last year showed that more than 80 per cent of Wellingborough firms are expecting growth during the next 12 months. Rushden Lakes will bring a further and significant improvement to the local economy.” The £50 million development will be built on a 244-acre plot of brownfield land outside the town, with 31 acres of development land.
