Olive growing and olive oil production are a historical, cultural, ethnographic and gastronomic reference in Extremadura, with a history of 2,500 years accredited by archaeological records and historiographic sources. The Olive Oil Route pursues the enhancement, conservation and protection of the landscape the cultivation of olive groves gives us. It also allows the traveller to enjoy a multitude of proposals around the excellent Extra Virgin Olive Oils (EVOOs) of Extremadura, and in this way, live unique experiences in an astonishing environment.

The quality seal used to distinguish and guarantee the best Extremaduran products is the distinction created in 1984, the so called ‘Alimentos de Extremadura’ (Products from Extremadura). The products covered under this seal are subject to rigorous specific technical regulations and an exhaustive selection. This quality seal indicates that the products come from Extremadura, as well as their subsequent handling, transformation and packaging. The selection of products includes the following types:

If you are a cheese lover, you cannot miss this event in Trujillo every May, which welcomes more than one hundred thousand people attracted by the smell of this delicacy. At the Trujillo National Cheese Fair, you will get to discover the best cheeses in the world. Around 300 types of cheeses are presented each year, including those from Extremadura, such as the Torta del Casar and those from Ibores and La Serena and Acehúche. The cheesemakers themselves are in charge of making their varieties known, and they are traditionally made in an artisanal way. In addition to this, the city council prepares a cultural programme that complements the rest of the activities carried out at the fair.

Every spring, the city of Jerez de los Caballeros, in Badajoz, hosts this ham fair which is perceived as the paradise for ham lovers. The best producers and distributors of this delicacy meet at the Ibérico Ham Hall.

This event invites us to learn about the origin, territory and culinary possibilities of Pimentón de La Vera, an essential condiment in Spanish gastronomy similar to paprika. The activities take place in Plasencia and in the regions where pimentón is made: La Vera, Campo Arañuelo, Valle del Ambroz and Valle del Alagón. In each edition, factory visits, tasting menus in restaurants, tapas routes, live gastronomic demonstrations, cultural visits, nature routes, contests and activities for professionals are scheduled.

The Jerte valley fills up with vitality at the start of the cherry season. This exquisite fruit is bestowed on us by the thousands of cherry trees that populate this region in the north of Extremadura; and an extensive programme of recreational, cultural and festive activities are organised, with the famous red fruit as their protagonist. A cultural proposal that inundates the valley with diverse activities held during the months of May, June and July. Gastronomy Conference on the picota cherry, tasting sessions, the cherry festival, music, active tourism and sports trials, visits to cooperatives and farms and displays of local handicrafts are just some of the proposals on the official programme of La Cerecera. Every year this festival inundates the Jerte valley with flavour, tradition and fiesta.

Gastronomic museums Ibérico Ham Museum The Ibérico Ham Museum in Monesterio is a centre dedicated to this emblematic and characteristic product in the region. The museum is divided into two floors and, through a surprising and interactive tour, you will be able to learn about its history, the ecosystem of the dehesa, the characteristics of the Ibérico pig, its artisanal production process, and the virtues that distinguish acorn-fed Ibérico ham and that make it a unique, exclusive and different product. Cheese Museum In the Cheese Museum, you will be able to find all the information about the making of the famous Torta del Casar cheese. This is a product whose manufacturing process has been preserved for generations by the people in Casar de Cáceres as a symbol of identity. The museum is located in a typical house, showing the visitor not only the artisanal production process of the Torta del Casar cheese but also the daily life of the town’s families. Museum of Wine Sciences The Museum of Wine Sciences in Almendralejo is part of the Association of Wine Museums of Spain, which aims to promote and spread the culture of wine in general and that of each land in particular.
Olive Oil Technology Museum This museum offers a clear vision of the olive oil manufacturing process and its cultural, social and economic importance in the region. This is a three-story building where you can learn in detail the origin and history of this industry that plays a huge role for Monterrubio de la Serena and its people. You will have the opportunity to see everything, from the most rudimentary objects to the most innovative techniques for the extraction and production. This exhibition will without a doubt surprise you. You will also have the opportunity to participate in recreational activities complementary to the visit. This museum is located in the old “Alcoholera Extremeña”, an alcohol factory from the mid20th century. Upon entry, you will feel like you are in a winery and you will be able to see the old wine and alcohol tanks and various utensils, as well as its distillation tower, where today the administrative area of the museum is located. Sentia Amarantis Roman Tapa Route, Mérida
Held annually in the month of November, this fair gives us the opportunity to get to know the historic area of Badajoz while we enjoy its gastronomy in a delightful manner.
During the celebration of Emerita Lvdica, a tapas route is organised using Apicius recipe book, a reference gastronomic text from Roman times. Restaurants prepare Roman inspired tapas with products and ingredients found in Extremadura.
