Vía de la Plata (english)

Casares de las Hurdes Caminomorisco

The millennial Vía de la Plata has its origins in the network of Roman roads known as Iter Ab Emerita Asturicam, which linked the important Roman towns of Emerita Augusta (Mérida), the capital of the Roman province of Lusitania, with Asturica Augusta (Astorga) to the north and with Hispalis (Seville) to the south. This Roman road has been called different names over the ages, the one used today was used by the Arabs, Vía de la Plata, which comes from the word ‘balata’, meaning stone pavement.
