Benvenuti a C i n q u e Te r re
In cities, where 70% of the world’s population will live in about 30 years, intelligent and efficient use of space is crucial. The Extremis stand at Interieur shows how the smallest spaces can be used in the most efficient and multifunctional way. On the Italian Riviera every square centimetre has always been used optimally, which is why Extremis took Cinque Terre as their inspiration. The result is a colourful setting with hidden corners everywhere. The houses with their terraces and balconies nestle against the mountain flank and look out over an azure blue sea. It doesn’t get any cosier than this! The inhabitants of this idyllic place are uncomplicated and have nothing to hide. Their underwear and socks are hanging outside their windows. They are colourful, just like the facades of their homes, but always stylish like every Italian.

Designing for density Space is priceless. Every square centimetre counts, especially in a world where 70% of the earth’s population will be living in ever more densely populated cities by the year 2050. With greater proximity, however, comes more intense interaction. This fact forms both the start and endpoint for Extremis designs, whose very raisons d’être are defined by concrete needs.

The small spaces issue
Spaces are not just meant to be filled. They should be lived.
Remember when we used to envy those friends or acquaintances who had the biggest house, the most expansive lawn, or the bathroom you could get lost in? Today, our self-worth no longer depends on the amount of space we take up. Instead, we long to live more ecologically, closer to our place of work, and more ‘in touch’ with the world around us.

Of course, economic and demographic factors play important roles as well: housing prices are skyrocketing, many people remain single or postpone marriage, and we all live longer overall. This is why the whole ‘less is more’ adage isn’t just another fad, but a philosophy deeply embedded in the fabric of modern times.

Restriction breeds creativity People in the city often have to make do with less, but they don’t want to compromise on quality of life. They don’t have to. An awkwardly small space can be a catalyst for change, compelling you to cut through the clutter and come up with clever ideas. It forces you to think up more compact and smarter applications for the same materials, and consider transportability and ease-of-storage. “But hasn’t everything been designed already?” Of course not. Needs change, socio-economic circumstances evolve, regulations are rewritten… Understanding these evolutions and adapting to them is a source of inspiration for game-changing design.
Tourist Guide
13
Good design is contagious It is also our main source of inspiration at Extremis. It’s why people come to us after a product presentation to express their disbelief: “Why hasn’t anyone thought of this before?” Our main goal, however, is always to encourage togetherness. A baby shower in a small urban garden or an after work party on the balcony? For Extremis, all types of gatherings can inspire new designs, as long as there is a practical need that can be met, or if usability can be significantly improved.
Creating designs that last by inspiring interactions that matter.

Picnik Š Design by Dirk Wynants & Xavier Lust for Extremis, 2002
When Dirk Wynants saw the junk piled up on the balconies of even the most luxurious lofts and penthouses, he realised the need for small and compact tools for togetherness. The result, the Picnik table, is perfectly adapted to a confined environment and to today’s most common family unit: the couple. This seminal creation sparked other innovative creations that not only respond to specific practical needs, but inspire new ways of living and interacting with one another. Such as the playful and space-conscious Virus table, or the equally efficient hexagonal Anker.

CASA GIALLA
When you arrive upstairs, go right and step onto the balcony and have a look at the Italian riviera. People in this village, they still have a tradition from the Romans: as you might know, they did not sit while having dinner, the Romans lied down! So here in our village, people take their siesta and stay in these Sol+Luna loungers all day and all night. But, when having friends over, they have aperitivo’ while sitting upstraight. Then the sunbed becomes a sofa! Amazing!
22
The small spaces issue
The hosts and their friends have parties that don’t end until the break of dawn. Night and day become one, thanks to this furniture, that is both sunbed and sofa. The parasol also has a double function: it offers shade for the sun, and at night it shines a soft light, just like a full moon.
2
CASA LIMONE
As you know, Italians are very expressive and even a bit loud at times. So, to tell a secret to your lover, you have to be able to get close to each other. The Bistroo offers you this privacy. Go ahead, try it, have a seat. This two-seater, where you
sit side by side, is made for true love. Mia mamma always says “love is not about staring at each other, but about looking in the same direction”. And la mamma is always right, isn’t she?
3
CASA BLU
Now let me tell you the story about this parasol, called Acacia. In these villages, the mountains where so steap and rocky that no trees could grow. People didn’t have any natural shade, so they created this Acacia shade inspired by the shape of a tree,
with old sails from their boats, but fully adaptable to their needs. They’re asymmetrical, so they can point the parasol towards the sun. And as you can see, there are no lighthouses here at the coast. That’s why sailormen used the torches of the Acacia to orientate at night. The picnic table that you see here is called Virus. This is the version you can win by taking a picture! But in this village they have versions up to five seats, because the fishermen like to share their catch of the day!

CASA ROSA
Have a look at the blue picnic table on the balcony on your left hand side. The idea for that design came from a villager who was in a hurry to dry his laundry. That’s why he just threw it on the lines in front of his window. That day the sun was extremely hot, so the laundry dried very fast and it hardened the fabric. When he took the laundry back in in the evening, he was impressed by the shape of his bedsheet. He copied that shape using a sheet of aluminium.
24
The small spaces issue
The result was a modern picnic table with striking looks, which are both solid and stylish. He called his design: Picnik. Nowadays, the villagers still hang their laundry in front of their windows, but in a more… conventional way. Can you count how many socks they washed yesterday? Don’t forget to check Kosmos and the new Tiki barstool downstairs! And enjoy the rest of your stay! Ciao!
DID YOU KNOW?
The never ending quest for the lost socks. The Extremis village is the only place in Italy where white socks are very fashionable! So be careful if you hang them on your washing lines, they get lost quite often...
