Manille

© Design by Dirk Wynants for Extremis, 2023

Centuries ago, the Manille card game made its way to France and Western Belgium. Today, the game remains immensely popular in West Flanders, and also at the Extremis offices.

An outdoor table that offers practicality, easy transport and fun? Step up your game with the Manille picnic table! Just like the card game it's named after, Manille embraces traditions, smart moves, and maximizing options. From a cozy setting for four to a sprawling table for twelve, with its unique design and practical features, Manille is sure to pull the right card.

This terrace is the perfect spot for working outdoors or sharing lunch with the team—complete with a view that’ll make you almost forget you’re actually working.

The roof-shaped 'Fixed Shade' ensures you're always sitting on a dry seat and protected from the harsh sun. You don't need to close or bring in this shade — it can remain outside permanently, if the furniture is securely anchored to the ground.

What would a city park be without benches here and there to sit and enjoy nature? We experience fewer visual stimuli, we escape the noise and bustle of the city. The well-placed resting points along the paths, however, also serve an important social function: they are meeting spots where people deliberately choose to spend time.

Aoba Symbol Road Shizuoka, Japan 

The backrests offer a relaxed seating posture, while the table at least allows for a card game between four friends. But it doesn't stop there: Manille is designed to be connected in series, creating much longer tables to accommodate the whole family. The more, the merrier! And access is always maintained — you never have to climb over the bench.

At a lively beer festival, elegance is almost certainly not the main concern, but this hasn’t stopped us from trying to improve access to the classic picnic table. We managed to incorporate more space at the sides to get in.

Togetherness everywhere!

This school in Kortrijk, Belgium, shows that it’s possible to bring old and new together in an inspiring setting. A former monastery dating back to the year 1843, known as ‘The Fort’ was restored to its old glory and given a new purpose as a high school.

By opting for Extremis Virus tables, the architects instantly added a funky element to the historic atmosphere. The warm colors perfectly combine with the old materials, preserving the original character of the chapel but offering new, unique chances for learning.
