We don’t draw our inspiration from design magazines or from looking at other furniture: we look around to see what is changing in the world.
Bienvenidos! What will the future look like? According to the UN, +70% of the world population will live in urban areas by 2050. In this near future, what will make a city a desirable place to live in? Private spaces will continue to become smaller, therefore the creation of more shared public spaces will be necessary as an offset. Back in 1968 Ricardo Bofill designed the ‘Muralla Roja’ Spanish for ‘The Red Wall’ project in Calpe, Spain. The layout of this apartment building challenged the increasing division between public and private space. That’s why Extremis brings its creations designed for the future in a setting inspired by this pastel-colored complex. The building is inspired by the Mediterranean tradition of the kasbah (which typically refers to a citadel or several buildings behind a defensive wall). The silhouette of Muralla Roja follows the contour lines of the rocky cliff it sits on and creates an ensemble of interconnected patios and stairs that provide access to multiple apartments. The eye-catching colors that cover the facades either contrast with nature or complement its purity.

Designing for density Space is priceless. Every square centimetre counts, especially in a world where people are living in more densely populated places. With greater proximity, however, comes more intense interaction. This fact forms both the start and endpoint for Extremis designs, whose very raisons d’être are defined by concrete needs.

Spaces are not just meant to be filled. They should be lived.
Remember when we used to envy those friends or acquaintances who had the biggest house, the most expansive lawn, or the bathroom you could get lost in? Today, our self-worth no longer depends on the amount of space we take up. Instead, we long to live more ecologically, closer to our place of work, and more ‘in touch’ with the world around us.

Of course, economic and demographic factors play important roles as well: housing prices are skyrocketing, many people remain single or postpone marriage, and we all live longer overall. This is why the whole ‘less is more’ adage isn’t just another fad, but a philosophy deeply embedded in the fabric of modern times.
We observe society and try to detect changes in how we live, regenerate and interact with each other.

Restriction breeds creativity People in the city often have to make do with less, but they don’t want to compromise on quality of life. They don’t have to. An awkwardly small space can be a catalyst for change, compelling you to cut through the clutter and come up with clever ideas. It forces you to think up more compact and smarter applications for the same materials, and consider transportability and ease-of-storage. “But hasn’t everything been designed already?” Of course not. Needs change, socio-economic circumstances evolve, regulations are rewritten… Understanding these evolutions and adapting to them is a source of inspiration for game-changing design.

Good design is contagious It is also our main source of inspiration at Extremis. It’s why people come to us after a product presentation to express their disbelief: “Why hasn’t anyone thought of this before?” Our main goal, however, is always to encourage togetherness. A baby shower in a small urban garden or an after work party on the balcony? For Extremis, all types of gatherings can inspire new designs, as long as there is a practical need that can be met, or if usability can be significantly improved.
Creating designs that last by inspiring interactions that matter.

Daily life at Muralla Roja Time to relax and make some time for yourself. Be astonished by the beautiful eye-catching colors, while gazing into the distance at the Mediterranean sea. Life can be easy, can't it? Discover the nice and tiny ‘residencias privadas’ and be inspired by the way the inhabitants live: cozy, comfortable and compact. Because they have a huge amount of space on the idyllic public plaza they live without compromise. Some of them are already chit-chatting on the plaza, of course with tapas and a nice vino tinto. At this public place, which is the transition between public and private life, worries can be left behind. Go outside, meet new people and remember: things are better together.

When the sun goes down, the integrated lighting beneath the parasol canopy creates a warm ambiance. Designed with the idea of a pocket torch in mind, simplicity reigns even in the integrated, rechargeable LED module. Instead of closing it, simply take off the canopy and put it away. You will be left with a sculpture inspired by the branches of the African Acacia.

The Memphis Style was founded in 1981 by a collective of designers and architects who created abstract statement pieces that were a bit ahead of their time. They drew inspiration from many movements like: Art Deco, Pop Art and Kitch mixed with futuristic themes. The result is a very playful style which we took as the starting point for our Bistroo makeover, experimenting with colors and materials. Have a seat with a friend, side by side and remember… never take yourself too seriously, Memphis Style.
