Ingrid Bergman starred alongside such film icons as Humphrey Bogart, Cary Grant and Gary Cooper and glittered in classics including Casablanca (1942), Notorious (1946), Stromboli (1950) and Herfstsonate (1978). The summer programme ‘Queen of Two Cinema Worlds’, features thirty films starring the silver screen icon, legendary both in Hollywood as well as in Europe. Bergman, a natural Swedish beauty praised for her highly varied acting style, worked with great directors such as Alfred Hitchcock, Roberto Rossellini and Ingmar Bergman, and was awarded a total of three Oscars. EYE will screen films from her early Swedish, American and Italian period.

Ingrid Bergman acteerde naast filmiconen als Humphrey Bogart, Cary Grant en Gary Cooper en schitterde in klassiekers als Casablanca (1942), Notorious (1946), Stromboli (1950) en Herfstsonate (1978). In het zomerprogramma ‘Queen of Two Cinema Worlds’ zijn bijna dertig films van deze legende van het witte doek te zien, die zowel een ster was in Hollywood als in Europa. Bergman, een ongekunstelde Zweedse schoonheid die geprezen werd om haar veelzijdig acteertalent, werkte onder grote regisseurs als Alfred Hitchcock, Roberto Rossellini en Ingmar Bergman en werd onderscheiden met maar liefst drie Oscars. EYE toont werk uit haar vroege Zweedse, Amerikaanse en Italiaanse periode.

Ingrid Bergman’s (1915-1982) talent was already apparent early on.

She was still in her twenties, and studying at the theatre academy in Stockholm when she was hired for various Swedish films, including the successful melodrama Intermezzo (1936). Producer David O. Selznick personally invited the young Swedish actress to America for a remake, Intermezzo: A Love Story (1939). It established Bergman as a hot, new discovery. In no time Hollywood studios built up an image of her as ‘100% natural’: ‘Pure as an orchid, fresh as the first snowfall,’ journalists wrote. ‘There’s no make-up in her dressing room, just a big tube of toothpaste’.

Leading lady Between 1940 and 1950, Ingrid Bergman grew to become a true star. In 1942, she appeared in the war drama Casablanca (Michael Curtiz) alongside Humphrey Bogart, who had to wear platform shoes to hold his own beside the 1.80-metre Swedish beauty. The Warner Bros. production became a classic and made Bergman an internationally admired actrice. For her performance in Gaslight (1944, George Cukor), she received her first Oscar and immediately after that accepted two religious roles. She played a nun alongside Bing Crosby in The Bells of St. Mary (1945) and the Maid of Orléans in Joan of Arc (1948), a role which she had dreamed of playing as a child. Bergman got an Oscar nomination for The Bells of St. Mary. Alfred Hitchcock was also impressed by the Swedish beauty and cast her in the films Spellbound (1945), Notorious (1946) and Under Capricorn (1949).

Italian adventure Bergman’s career suffered a slump when in 1949 she left her husband for the Italian director Roberto Rossellini, who in previous years had made neorealistic works such as Roma, città aperta, Paisà and Germania anno zero. Grote rollen Tussen 1940 en 1950 groeide Ingrid Bergman uit tot een ster. In 1942 stond ze naast Humprey Bogart – die plateauzolen moest dragen om niet weg te vallen naast de 1.80 meter lange Zweedse – in het oorlogsdrama Casablanca (Michael Curtiz). De Warner Bros.-productie werd een klassieker en maakte Bergman tot internationaal geliefde actrice.

Voor haar optreden in Gaslight (1944, George Cukor) ontving ze haar eerste Oscar; direct daarna speelde ze twee rollen met religieuze inslag; als non naast Bing Crosby in The Bells of St. Mary (1945) en als de Maagd van Orléans in Joan of Arc (1948), een rol waarvan ze als kind al droomde. The Bells of St. Mary leverde Bergman een Oscar­ nominatie op. Ook Alfred Hitchcock was onder de indruk van de Zweedse schoonheid en gaf haar rollen in de films Spellbound (1945), Notorious (1946) en Under Capricorn (1949).

Italiaans avontuur Bergmans carrière kreeg een knak toen ze in 1949 haar echtgenoot verliet voor de Italiaanse regisseur Roberto Rossellini, die in de jaren daarvoor neorealistische producties had gedraaid als Roma, città aperta, Paisà en Germania anno zero. Tijdens de opnamen van Stromboli (1950) kwamen de geruchten over een affaire naar buiten, waarop

expecting a child with the still-married Rossellini. Later Rossellini and Bergman had twins, the oldest of which became the world-famous actrice Isabella Rossellini. Hollywood was outraged and she was ostracised for seven years. Bergman went on to make a further five films with Rossellini, including, Europa ’51 (1952), Viaggio in Italia (1954) en La paura (1954).

Legend In 1956, Ingrid Bergman returned to the Hollywood spotlight with a leading role in Anastasia (Anatole Litvak), for which she received her second Oscar. A third Oscar followed for Murder on the Oriënt Express (1974), directed by Sidney Lumet. She made her final feature film with fellow countryman Ingmar Bergman: Herfstsonate (1978, Oscar nominatioin for best actrice). In 1982, she played what was to be her final role in the American mini-series ‘A Woman Called Golda’, about the life of Golda Meir, the former Prime Minister of Israel. The strong performance won her both an Emmy and a Golden Globe. Shortly afterwards, the celebrated actrice died of cancer. Today, Ingrid Bergman still ranks fourth on the American Film Institute’s list of ‘50 Greatest American Screen Legends’.

Legende In 1956 keerde Bergman terug in de schijnwerpers van Hollywood met een hoofdrol in Anastasia (Anatole Litvak), waarvoor ze haar tweede Oscar ontving. Een derde Oscar volgde voor Murder on the Oriënt Express (1974), geregisseerd door Sidney Lumet. Haar laatste speelfilm maakte Bergman met landgenoot Ingmar Bergman: Herfstsonate (1978, Oscarnominatie). In 1982 speelde ze met verve haar laatste rol in de Amerikaanse miniserie ‘A Woman Called Golda’, over het leven van Golda Meir, de oud-minister-president van Israël, waarvoor ze zowel een Emmy als een Golden Globe kreeg. Kort daarna overleed de gevierde actrice aan de gevolgen van kanker. Dialogues, scenes, the song ‘As Time Goes By’, Humphrey Bogart’s trenchcoat and Ingrid Bergman’s hat, have all embedded themselves in our collective memory for good. The enormous influence of Casablanca on other films and television series will be traced using key moments in the film. EYE’s own Frédérique Flori and film critic André Waardenburg (NRC Handelsblad) will host the evening. Language: English.

Ingrid Bergman Rarities 8 July, 19.15 Illustrated lecture by Jon Wengström. Rare films from the archives of the Swedish Film Institute offer behind-the-scenes glimpses of Bergman at work and in private life.

Open-air screening of Notorious 20 August, 9.15 pm On the terrace of EYE and Vertigo in de beautiful Vondelpark.

In Notorious, a brilliant allegory of love and betrayal, Hitchcock fuses two of his favorite elements: suspense and romance. A beautiful woman with a tainted past (Ingrid Bergman) is enlisted by American agent Devlin (Cary Grant) to spy on a ring of Nazis in post-war Rio.

Rossellini-avond met Kevin Toma 22 juli Filmjournalist Kevin Toma (de Volkskrant) leidt twee films in die Ingrid Bergman maakte met haar echtgenoot Roberto Rossellini.

16.45: Stromboli (1950). Rossellini’s eerste film met Bergman werd in Italië uiterst koel ontvangen, niet in de laatste plaats doordat de regisseur de warmbloedige Romeinse Anna Magnani, zijn minnares, als favoriete actrice had gedumpt voor de ingetogen Zweedse.

19.15: Europa ’51 (1952). Rossellini’s tweede film met Bergman kreeg een Gouden Leeuw-nominatie op het filmfestival van Venetië. Lof was er voor de intense emoties op Bergmans gezicht.

Openluchtvoorstelling Notorious 20 augustus, 21.15 Op het terras van EYE en Vertigo De aantrekkelijke, frivole Alicia Huberman (Ingrid Bergman) wil haar naam zuiveren nadat haar Duitse vader, die tijdens de oorlog in Amerika spioneerde, zelfmoord heeft gepleegd in de gevangenis. Ze infiltreert daarom bij een groep nazi-vrienden van haar vader in Rio, op verzoek van T.R. Devlin (Cary Grant), een agent van de Amerikaanse regering.
