Thanksgiving eve a big night on social calendar

T

hanksgiving eve — the night of a thousand reunions — is among the busiest evenings of the year for Bakersfield restaurants and pubs across the city. In fact, restaurant owners have taken to calling the night “Black Wednesday” — both for being a red-letter day for overindulgence and its role in getting cash registers ringing.

Being the kickoff to the holiday season, there’s an undeniable festive spirit in the air, owing to the return of scores of college students, other family and friends and working stiffs eager to clock out early to get the party started.

And nowhere is the tradition more established than at Wool Growers, the unofficial hub for mixed crowds of all ages.

“In my 41 years here at Wool Growers, I see up to fourth generations coming in with their babies,” owner Jenny Maitia-Poncetta said. “It’s neat. My mom says she loves watching all these families, and when the kids come up and introduce themselves as ‘so-and-so’s son, and ‘I’ve been coming here since I was a little kid, you remember me?’ You see all kinds of people, especially young people, who are all very respectful to the older patrons.”

Most of her customers have become accustomed to the change in atmosphere on this particular night, though MaitiaPoncetta added that she still makes a point to remind them.

“Realize, it’s not going to be a nice, quiet evening. If they’re thinking about being somewhere it’s nice and quiet to be able visit with their family, that’s not what they should be expecting. It’s a lot of people and a lot of noise. For older people I can see where it might not be that much fun and a little chaotic. But it’s fun.”

Beyond the large groups of families filling up the Wool Growers banquet room, Maitia-Poncetta said the scene resembles a college campus, with students eager to let off some steam between studies.

phones now but, before, everyone was looking for each other and they came here searching. The chaos has become a bit more organized now, and the last two to three years have not been as crazy, but some years I haven’t been able to leave the back register because of the amount of people.”

Maitia added that another highlight of the evening is watching the girls come and go.

“I see it all. The girls dress up in outfits you would not believe.

They dress up like they’re getting ready for New Year’s Eve. They’re really here to impress. It’s kind of nice — you see these beautiful, young women all dressed to a tee.”

One of the ways the restaurant stays organized, Maitia said, is by making menu adjustments designed for serving larger-thanaverage crowds.

“We usually pick six or seven of our best sellers, like the shrimp scampi and of course the lamb chops and ox tail stew, all of the ones that we think are the most popular, so the kitchen can get it out faster. All of our staff will work, and not one complains because the servers make some pretty good money. They’re happy to work.”

Maitia recommends reservations — and making them soon.

“I always tell people: It’s not a typical night at Wool Growers. We have our normal seating arrangements, so that everyone can get done early and head home to spend time with their family, but it has never quite worked out that way. We serve until everyone gets fed properly.”

After four decades, there isn’t any particular moment that stands out in particular for Maitia, though she does marvel at the stamina of her younger clientele, who, after filling their bellies, are ready to keep the party going.

“We start to wind down about 11:30 to midnight, and you’ll see them all jumping into cabs. I have to admit they are pretty responsible. I’m proud of our young people.”

Bakersfield in his blood Celeb journalist/former Condor sets novel in town he still loves

H

e played just one season as a backup goalie for the Bakersfield Condors, but that was more than enough time for the team — and town — to cast a permanent spell on author and celebrity journalist Ken Baker.

His affection for the area runs so deep, in fact, that the city figures prominently in two of Baker’s four published books: “They Don’t Play Hockey in Heaven,” the 2003 chronicle of his life as “professional hockey’s oldest rookie,” and the recently released “Fangirl,” a young adult novel that follows the techno-fueled romance between an average teen and Bieber-esque pop star.

Baker will be at Barnes & Noble on California Avenue Friday to sign copies of “Fangirl,” no arm-twisting necessary.

“I love coming up the Grapevine and down into the valley,” said Baker in a phone interview Monday. “I always feel like I can breathe and relax. There’s something about that expanse of the southern valley there. It can be so beautiful and breathtaking sometimes.

“It’s two hours from Los Angeles but it can be a world away. I just love that about Bakersfield.”

Baker — who writes about celebrities as chief news correspondent for E! News — makes the trip north from his Los Angeles home at least once a year, more if he has his way.

His affinity for the city derives from a combination of things: enduring friendships with Condors personnel past and present like Jamie Cooke, Matt Riley and Kevin Bartl, and the resemblance he sees between Bakersfield and his hometown of Buffalo, N.Y. “They’re both working-class, middleclass cities. I think Bakersfield has a similar place in how it’s set in California that Buffalo has in New York, and for that reason, I think there’s something I feel comfortable with there.”

And so Baker returned, both figuratively and literally, to sketch out his novel’s protagonist: an everyteen preoccupied with pop culture and social media whose background and world view are distinctly Bakersfield.

“I could have set it anywhere. I wanted the girl to be from a smaller town, but not too small. I also wanted her to be kind of an average girl that people could relate to. I feel that, to me, Bakersfield is that kind of place.”

and her mother, and several familiar settings pop up throughout the novel: Gosford Road, Rabobank Arena, the Oaks neighborhood and the Frito-Lay plant northwest of town. The author even picked up the idea for a minor plot point while in town doing research.

“I was sitting in Starbucks waiting for someone, so I grabbed a Californian and started reading the local news. There was a big story about a marijuana farm bust. I had no idea this was becoming a problem in the valley.”

While Baker may have had to get reacquainted with Bakersfield, the nature of his work as a celebrity journalist makes him uniquely qualified to explore one of the book’s major themes: the price of fame exacted on young stars in a world obsessed with celebrity.

“If a teen, with their parents’ approval, enters that world, they’re walking into this intense crucible,” said Baker, who has interviewed dozens of young celebrities over the years. “What they don’t realize is that once you turn it on, it’s very difficult to turn it off. There is a price to pay. One of those is the price of privacy and intense media scrutiny. And it’s very difficult.”

Still, the central focus of the book — first love — is accessible to everyone, even a married father of two who may seem an unlikely choice to write from the perspective of a 14-year-old girl.

“It was a daunting thing to dip into this,” Baker said. “But the texting, techno aspects of the story aside, if you fell in love for the first time in the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s or 2012, that feeling is what I wanted to capture.”

Hockey and life lessons Meanwhile, Baker is pleased to report that his first book, “Man Made: A Memoir of My Body,” is about to become a feature film, starring Elijah Wood.

The indie comedy, whose working title is “Late Bloomer,” follows Baker’s journey through puberty — at age 28 — after the removal of a benign tumor on his pituitary gland.

“If anything, it changes your biochemistry so much that it changes the way you’re experiencing your physicality.

“I had solved those problems by the time I got to Bakersfield. Hockey was an ultimate celebration of that.”

With his medical problems behind him, Baker was eager to pursue his boyhood dream of playing professional hockey.

Around 2000, he looked up Jamie Cooke, a college friend who was playing for the Condors.

“I cold-called the team and tried out. I started the season before, and then moved there (for the 2001-02 season).

“It was a magical time for me.”

Though Baker’s official association with the team lasted just a season, he managed to mine enough insights to write a book about his experiences and still considers himself an unofficial Condor, catching at least one game a year and offering his advice and expertise with promotional campaigns, including the team’s recent tongue-in-cheek offer to sign Justin Bieber to a contract.

Early bird catches the fish in this contest Taft fishing derby a fun-filled chance to hook biggest trout

undreds of people won’t necessarily wake up early to catch the worm anymore. But throw in a chance to win $1,000 while fishing with your family, and the Taft Chamber of Commerce’s annual Trout Fishing Derby starts looking awfully appealing.

About 700 people packed Lake Evans at the Buena Vista Aquatic Recreation area southwest of Bakersfield last year to do just that, and enjoy a good day of fishing.

Event coordinator Shannon Jones said that $1,000 will be given to the proud fisherman holding the heaviest trout caught between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday.

And that person could win up to $20,000 if the fish’s weight matches an already predetermined number, she said. It hasn’t been given out in a while, “but it is always possible.”

There will be three different age categories, with first, second and third prizes given in each one, she added. The breakdown is up to 7 years old, from 8 to 13 years old and 14 and over, which includes adults.

You can pre-register, or sign up on the day of the event until 10 a.m., Jones said.

Many people do pre-register and begin lining up at the lake’s front and back gate to make sure to get a good “fishing spot,” beginning around 2 a.m.

“Most get there around 4 a.m.,” she said, “and we are out there making sure they have wristbands.”

Gates open right at 6 a.m., with most people getting to the lake by 7, Jones said.

The lake will be stocked with 2,000pounds of trout on Thursday, and will then be locked up tight until Saturday morning, she said. The good thing is that once the derby is over, participants can continue — along with the rest of the public — to fish.

“Most of the participants are repeat fishermen, and it is a good event for families,” she said. “It’s cool to see the different generations come out.”

Despite not being a fisherman herself, fishing does run in her family.

“My husband, Taylor, will be out there with his dad, Rick, and our 4-year-old son, Hadley,” Jones said. “It’s my son’s third year at the derby. This year, he has a Spiderman fishing pole.

“They have been practicing in our driveway for it,” she said. “They are definitely ready.”

The chamber’s executive director, Kathy Orrin, joins in the fishing madness, helping pre-register folks on the day of. She says it pales in comparison to the chaos of her previous occupation — junior high principal.

“That makes me able to handle the crazy stuff,” she said. “These are kids who are honest, but also don’t know who they are.

So if you can work with junior high kids, you can really work with anyone.”

Orrin has worked with the chamber in her current job for only a year and a half, but has been working as a volunteer and ambassador since the 1990s, when the fishing derby began. The Taft Chamber of Commerce has been around since the 1920s, and has always been a central part of the community, she said.

“It’s in a real important position to be a welcome wagon for the community,” Orrin said. “We serve as a bridge between the city and its citizens.”

She said when a lake is stocked, people are willing to get up early to fish.

The majority of participants come from Bakersfield and beyond, Orrin said.

“We make a few bucks on it, but it’s not a landslide,” she said. “We do it because people like it. It’s cool to see dads with their kids, and families out there having fun together.”

The Taft Chamber has about 200 members, said administrative assistant Jessica Miller, with many different year-round sponsors for all the events they put on.

“We also have a car show, a Rocktober Fest event, and a golf tournament,” Miller said. “We had one of the guys get a holein-one, and he won $20,000. That was pretty exciting.”

The chamber is also working with the newly re-established Greater Taft Economic Development Authority, Miller said. “We are pushing economic growth, retail shops and all that good stuff.”

Paying his dues in depths of the blues But Shepherd is in a happy, healthy place these days

F

or the first time in his career, blues great Kenny Wayne Shepherd enjoyed the opportunity to take a “finish no record before its time” approach to making his latest studio CD, “How I Go.” That’s one reason the gap between his studio albums grew to seven years.

“I was able to do it at somewhat of a leisurely pace,” said Shepherd, who will play selections from the album during his concert Friday at Eagle Mountain Casino in Porterville.

“We went in the studio over the course of the past year and made this record. So we went in and would record for two weeks and then we’d go home and we’d be out of the studio for a couple of months. It enabled me to live with the material for long periods of time and really analyze it and listen to it.

“And that way I was very sure when I went back in the studio what needed to be done to make it better.”

Of course Shepherd hadn’t spent those years between albums loafing.

In 2006, he released “10 Days Out,” a combination CD/DVD that involved Shepherd (with drummer Chris Layton and bassist Tommy Shannon, from Stevie Ray Vaughan’s old band, Double Trouble) traveling to locations around the United States to record and film collaborations with a host of veteran blues artists, including Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, Etta Baker, Pinetop Perkins (Muddy Waters’ pianist) and Hubert Sumlin (Howlin’ Wolf’s guitarist).

Then in 2010, he released his first concert CD, “Live in Chicago.”

But with that gap between his last studio album, 2004’s “The Place You’re In,” and his current release, Shepherd had accumulated roughly 300-400 guitar riffs, rhythm tracks and song ideas, and turning those into fully realized songs took several writing sessions with a series of collaborators that spanned 18 months.

But beyond the new, more deliberate approach to making music, there were a number of personal changes that needed attending to in Shepherd’s life, including a drinking and drug habit that, as he said in a 2004 interview with this writer, had become a “routine for me, like a daily affair.”

In addition, Shepherd’s priorities changed with his 2006 marriage to Hannah Gibson (daughter of controversial actor/director Mel Gibson) and the birth of their three children.

“Having kids has probably been the single most profound experience of my entire life,” said Shepherd, who is making time to be a father and husband.

“My goal is to be as present for them as possible,” he said. “So definitely striking the right balance is part of my daily con-

But Shepherd also noted that he feels a strong obligation to his music and fans, so he’s excited to have “How I Go” out and to be on tour.

With “How I Go,” Shepherd was eager to reassert the rock facet of his sound.

“I wanted there to be a nice mix between blues and blues-based rock, or contemporary blues or whatever you want to call it, just getting back to that middle road between the rock and the blues, which I think is what people have come to expect from me and my band,” he said.

He does that nicely on “How I Go,” as first-rate rockers like “Never Lookin’ Back” and “The Wire” share space with bluesier tunes like “Dark Side of Love” and a cover of the Beatles’ “Yer Blues,” which features some standout soloing from Shepherd.

Considering his pride in “How I Go,” it makes sense that Shepherd has been gradually adding more of the new material as touring has continued this year.

“We’ve worked up just about every song that was on the record for the live show,” Shepherd said. “So it’s just a matter of time before most of it is in the set list.”

Nostalgia, humor in days of radio ‘Wrinkles’ back for second year of fun

GO & DO ‘WRKL is on the Air’

T

his year’s edition of “Wrinkles” takes us back in time and space. The setting is a radio station in Cincinnati whose call letters are WRKL. I’m sure fans of television’s “Wheel of Fortune” will quickly translate that into the word “wrinkle.”

Dan Schaffer, who’s a radio person in real life — he’s operations manager of KAXL 88.3 FM — wrote the script for the Bakersfield Music Theatre production, which opens this evening for four performances.

His wife, Kathleen Schaffer, the director, said he’s also a history buff and the show is set in 1942, during World War II. And that fits in with the experience of many of the 35 cast members, who range in age from 55 to 87.

“There are references to the war and our brave men and women (who were) in harm’s way,” she said. “I chose all the music from the 1920s, ’30s and ’40s — so many wonderful songs.”

Among the old standards are “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree,” “Walkin’ My Baby Back Home” and, as a finale, the chorus will sing “This is My Country.”

Schaffer said this year’s show is much shorter than the 2011 production, which ran close to three hours. I’m guessing that it will be more tightly knit as well since it has a definite script as opposed to last year’s “Wrinkles,” which was more in the nature of a revue or a variety show.

“The show has some excellent actors,“ Schaffer said. “(They) keep the storyline moving along, as we give the audience a glimpse of what an old radio show was like.”

Apparently there’s a considerable amount of humor along with the nostalgia. I asked one of the actors, Hank Webb, about his role. Turns out the retired Bakersfield College drama teacher plays several parts.

Dark comedy at The Empty Space Brian Sivesind never shies away from tackling tough roles. In fact he seems to thrive on such challenges. His latest venture is “A Day in the Death of Joe Egg,” a dark comedy about a sensitive subject that opens Friday at The Empty Space.

Sivesind directs and also has one of the lead characters. I asked him why the play, by Peter Nichols, appeals to him.

“I was drawn to this play because of the central issue of parenting a special-needs child,” he said. “The couple in the play have to find ways to cope with

the challenges that come with raising a child with a severe case of cerebral palsy.”

Lexie Watkins portrays Joe Egg, the child who remains inanimate as the play progresses.

Sivesind portrays the child’s father; his wife, Ellie Sivesind, the mother. After 10 years of marriage, the characters’ lives have become mundane and they use comedy to get through their everyday lives.

“Ultimately, I don't think there is a right answer about how to deal with the situation, and that is true for a lot of parenting,” he said. “This play raises questions, and I love theater that does that.

Hopefully, it spurs conversation while also being entertaining.”

Also in the cast are Bob Kempf and Amy Hall, playing a couple who are friends with the central characters, and Barbara Gagnon as the child’s grandmother.

Dukes Concert series Violinist Susan Doering and cellist Dieter Wulfhorst, who perform as The Emerald Duo, will make a return visit to Bakersfield on Sunday as part of the Fred and Beverly Dukes Concert Series at First Congregational Church.

The Fresno-based musicians last appeared here in March 2011.

That performance, like the upcoming one, was also part of the Dukes series, which is cosponsored by Valley Public Radio, KPRX-FM 89.1.

Both are members of the music faculty at Fresno Pacific University. They also have an active concert schedule throughout the school year and spend their summers teaching and performing in Europe. Their program on Sunday will include works by Stamitz, Massonneau, and several pops variations of classics.

Winds concert This is a landmark year for the Bakersfield Winds, an impressive 60-member concert band that will present its first concert of the season on Monday evening at Olive Drive Church (for more on the anniversary, turn to Page 31).

I attended the Winds patriotic concert in July and enjoyed it thoroughly. The band delivered a full-bodied sound and a wellrounded program that included a stirring salute to the Armed Forces. The band is made up chiefly of woodwind and brass instrument with a percussion section and a string bass.

“We are excited to be celebrating our 10th season,” said Mitch Garcia, vice president. “This year’s program promises to be the best ever as artistic director John Biller conducts the south San Joaquin Valley’s finest musicians in a wide range of band music in a way that energizes an audience and renews a person’s love of music.”

Band carries on legacy of Bob Marley

hough three decades have passed, the memory of sitting bedside with friend and reggae legend Bob Marley in a German hospital as he lay battling the cancer that would end his life is etched on the memory and soul of guitarist Al Anderson.

Despite his weakened condition, Marley’s spirit remained unbroken.

“He said, ‘Please don’t forget my own contribution, but also write your own music.’

“I was the last musician to leave him in the hospital in Bavaria before he took his journey. He told me to ‘keep the band together’ because he thought I had some sort of idea of how to keep a band together, and I do. It takes a lot of love, a lot of herb and a lot of gigs. The Wailers love to smoke herb and play music live for people.”

Today, Marley is more popular than ever via the singer’s rich discography, a fiercely guarded estate, and appearances by his sidemen, like Anderson, who appears at Narducci’s Cafe on Tuesday with his group, The Original Wailers, to promote their five-song EP, “Miracle.”

In the years following Marley’s death, Anderson has continued working steadily, performing under the Wailers name and — due to legal considerations — treading carefully in how he promotes the show, never using the singer’s likeness or name in advertisements.

“We’re not a tribute to ourselves,” said Anderson during a recent phone interview. “What we’re trying to do is portray ourselves as a group that produces, writes and arranges their own music and at the same time had a huge affiliation with Bob Marley.

The name belongs to Bob, Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer, the three who formed the group, and all the musicians who put a decade of their life into touring and the agony into making The Wailers a success.”

The partnership between Anderson and Marley happened by accident. Working as a studio musician in New York, Anderson moved to England in the ’70s on the recommendation of col-

leagues who’d already found success as session players across the ocean. Soon after arriving, he got the opportunity to rub elbows with just about everyone in the rock elite: members of Traffic, the Rolling Stones and drummer Keith Moon of The Who. One day, Anderson was summoned by Island Records to lay down bass tracks for rising musician Bob Marley, who at that point had released two albums that met with moderate success, though not in the U.S. Anderson recalls their initial meeting.

“I went over to the studio and there’s this real small guy with a lot of hair. He had a really heavy accent. I had no idea what he was saying. First thing he says is, ‘Yeah mon, we play some music, here’s a spliff (marijuana.)’ So, I asked him, ‘What do you want me to play?’ He asked if I’d heard his albums, ‘Catch a Fire,’ and Burnin’. I knew who he was and that I knew who played on the record, but I didn’t know about ‘Simmer Down,’ ‘African Herbsman,’ ‘One Cup of Coffee’ and all the old songs. I wasn’t familiar with him as a guitarist and a songwriter. So he basically asked me, ‘What do you hear?’ I told him, ‘acoustic guitar, slide guitar, and lead guitar.’ And he goes, ‘Go ahead, you’re on your own.’”

within hours had other plans.

“I played really hard rock with a big amp. He didn’t like that, so we scrubbed that. We kept some tracks, but most never made the album. I thought I played better a lot louder and more aggressively for his music. He didn’t want that. He wanted something that was just like how the ‘Natty Dread’ album was. It was very conscious. He was like the Martin Luther King of reggae. He wanted that type of backing behind his lyrics, not too cutting as a lead in his sound. So I gave him that on ‘No Woman, No Cry,’ ‘Rebel

Music,’ ‘So Jah S'eh,’ ‘Talkin’ Blues.’ These are the songs I remember very well. He was very happy and most of the songs that I did for ‘Natty Dread’ took about an hour.”

Following the release of “Natty Dread,” Marley’s career soared, with Anderson alongside for much of the ride.

“I just came in and I was just lucky. I threw dice and he loved everything I did.”

Malo finds younger listeners at shows

A

rcelio Garcia wants to assure fans that the original bad boys of Latin rock are as malo — bad — as ever when he takes the stage at La Movida Nightclub on Friday.

As lead singer of Malo, the legendary band responsible for such hits as “Nena,” “Pana” and the immortal “Suavecito,” among others, Garcia and his crew continue to tour, still waving the flag of a movement started on the San Francisco streets in the Mission District during the ’60s. And while it might be an entirely new band, Garcia says the same Malo intensity is guaranteed to bring back memories of a golden era and the blistering live shows the group became popular for.

“We don’t try and warm up,” said Garcia during a phone interview from his home in Fresno.

“We start hot and finish on fire, man. You can’t mess with us.”

Formed in 1968 by Garcia, Malo started out as an R&B act called The Malibus. Looking for a new sound apart from the freewheeling hippie themes of the day, Garcia began to incorporate elements of Latin percussion into the soul-based rock sound, with an assist from guitarist Jorge Santana, brother of guitarist Carlos Santana. To avoid sound comparisons, Garcia added a horn section that gave them a jazzy New York salsa edge.

the big guys like promoter Bill Graham, who was a fan of ours.”

After signing with Warner Bros. in the ’70s, the group released four seminal albums, regarded as part of the foundation of Latin rock, alongside Santana’s debut album and El Chicano’s “Viva Tirado.”

“Looking back now, Warner Bros. didn’t know what to do with Malo. They marketed us as just a Latin band, and sent us to South America, and we became a big hit out there in places like El Salvador, Nicaragua. Right now, Malo is getting a lot of attention in Japan. You just never know how things are going to happen.”

Malo stays busy primarily on the oldies circuit today, but on occasion will find themselves booked at large venues such as The Greek and the Gibson Amphitheater in Los Angeles with friends from their ’70s heyday.

but a lot of shows now, it’s nothing but kids who don’t just want to hear ‘Suavecito.’ They’ve heard that from their parents for years.

We haven’t played ‘It’s a Lovely Day’ and ‘Lady I Love’ for a long time, maybe about 15 years. Now people can request more songs and not just hear the same ones.”

But longtime fans eager to hear

Fans of throwback cult comedy should make plans to groove on over and catch ’70s comedy singer Clarence “Blowfly” Reid at Narducci’s Cafe on Friday.

Starting out as a popular songwriter, penning R&B hits for artists such as Betty Wright (“Clean Up Woman”) Sam and Dave, and KC & The Sunshine Band, among others in the ’60s and ’70s, Reid was among an elite group of soul songwriters of the time.

Blessed with a pair of silky pipes, he also recorded a number of his own singles before trading his coat and tie in for a glittery hooded cape, re-emerging as lowrent superhero “Blowfly,” a name given to him by his grandmother.

After selling off most of his publishing rights to the radio hits he made famous, Reid was intent on finding success as his comedy alter-ego, recording a series of albums mostly of sex-based parodies of other popular songs. They are crude, rude and mentioned in the same breath as those from urban comedy peers like Rudy Ray “Dolemite” Moore,” Redd Foxx and Richard Pryor, and sampled heavily by rap acts such as 2 Live Crew.

How to start holiday?

With a blinged-out tree Enchanted Forest fundraiser gets more space for glam event

he last time we checked in with Bakersfield’s Tom Xavier, he was baking up a storm for his first ever Let Them Eat Homemade Cake fundraiser. Now, as the holiday season comes barreling down the calendar, he’s back: still baking, and gearing up for what may be his biggest, most extravagant Enchanted Forest charity auction and dinner yet.

A few months ago, Xavier started baking his decadent homemade cakes as a way to raise some extra money to benefit Kern County Firefighters Muster Association, which also will be the beneficiary of this year’s Enchanted Forest. And Xavier said his signature holiday event is in for some pretty big changes this year.

The most significant restyling for the glitzy holiday gala will be its location: for the first time in five years, Enchanted Forest will be held not at the Petroleum Club, but at Seven Oaks Country Club.

“Last year, at our 10th anniversary celebration, we sold, sold, sold, sold out the Petroleum Club,” Xavier said. “We could not fit one single other person in there. I was shocked. So for this year, we decided to move to our new location.”

Last year set the bar pretty high. In addition to selling out, the event raised nearly $20,000 for the Kern County Firefighters Burn Survivors Trust, making it the most successful Enchanted Forest ever. But, endowed with a larger venue and bigger, even more lavishly decorated trees, Xavier is determined to outdo himself once again.

“Tickets are $20 more this year, so I really want to give people more bang for their buck,” he said. “When they go I want it to be a complete experience from the moment they step out of their car. And if you weren’t in the holiday spirit when you arrived, you will be by the end of the evening.”

But many of the familiar elements that contributed to Enchanted Forest’s success will be returning. As always, this black tieoptional affair will feature 10 fully adorned trees, each decorated by a different local designer, which can be won either by raffle or by auction; a live and silent auction so guests can get a head start on their holiday shopping; and a delicious menu, crafted by Seven Oaks’ head chef.

but he did reveal his plans to use Seven Oaks’ most impressive bit of greenery for a putting competition. The winner could go home with a 46-inch LED flat-screen TV. But even with all of these visions of this year’s event dancing through his head, Xavier is already looking ahead to next year: “One thing I’ve learned by doing this is that I’m constantly amazed at the generosity of people. I’ve always got a vision of what this could be, and I’m not there yet. I guess maybe I set my bar too high. But I really think it might happen in the next year or two. I’ve had conversations with people already, and I think next year is going to blow even this year out of the water.”

reat news for country music fans: a real band is coming to town this weekend. No hats, tinted hair or $200 jeans, just straight-forward guitarinfused country.

And it’s long overdue for Americana junkies like me.

Austin’s Micky and the Motorcars will be playing Saturday night at Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace. The Motorcars are one of those high-octane Austin bands that rarely venture outside of Texas. Like a lot of bands from the Americana scene, it’s just not in their financial best interest to play shows out West.

I’ve seen them play here in front of 100 people, and in Texas in front of 2,000. Do the math. Lucky for us, their management team does send them out here from time to time, and I suggest you take advantage of the opportunity.

Micky and the Motorcars became a band when Micky Braun and his brother Gary realized that their folks had too many boys with too much talent. The Braun family grew up in Stanley, Idaho, with no TV and since their dad, Muzzie Braun, was a well-respected musician, it followed that they’d all learn to

play music at a very young age, and they did. So here they are, a whole brood of prodigies all living together in Idaho.

Eventually it was time to form a band, and they all played together as youngsters as the Braun Brothers. But too many brothers that sound alike can get tiresome and creepy. Like the Osmonds. So the brothers split up into two bands: the oldest, Cody and Willy, formed Reckless Kelly, and they’ve also played the Palace. Micky and Gary formed Micky and the Motorcars, and the rest, as they say, is history. Both bands are outstanding, and both are staples on Americana radio.

You might think that the Braun brothers simply divided up by age, but it turns out that it was more about musical direction.

While neither band does the whole generic, overproduced cookie-cutter country thing, the Motorcars seem like more of a roots-rock band. Their songs are well crafted, and the musicianship is top-notch. All these guys learned multiple instruments, and it shows. Mix in a high-octane rhythm section, and you get one of the best live bands around.

Motorcars moved to Austin, Texas, the live music capital of the world, where they quickly gained a huge following. Five terrific albums later, they’re still picking up steam.

Longtime fans will appreciate the opportunity to see them again, and hopefully a bunch of folks who’ve never heard them will show up and become fans. After all, it’s a free show. So why not take a chance and check out something new?

Sadly, the Braun Brothers’ music doesn’t fit the Nashville mold, so you’ll never hear them on mainstream country radio, but, hey, this is why they tour. So join me Saturday night at the Palace, and see what you’ve been missing, as Micky and The Motorcars bring a little bit of Austin to Bakersfield.

You’ll be glad you did.

Winds celebrating 10th anniversary Performance of classical, newer works on tap Monday

akersfield Winds conductor John Biller can’t believe the ensemble is starting its 10th season this weekend.

“It’s kind of amazing to most of us that we’ve been doing this for 10 years,” Biller said.

The Bakersfield Winds will launch its 10th concert season Monday evening with an eclectic mix of classic compositions and newer works of music ranging from quiet and introspective to the heroic in scope.

After opening with the “Star-Spangled Banner,” the wind ensemble will perform film composer and orchestrator Rossano Galante’s “Resplendent Glory,” a big, showy piece noted for its fanfares and flourishes. Galante, who studied composition with famed movie composer Jerry Goldsmith, has arranged scores for dozens of films, including “Live Free or Die Hard,” “3:10 to Yuma,” “Tuesdays with Morrie,” and many other films.

Originally scored for unaccompanied male voices, Franz Biebl’s “Ave Maria” is a lovely, quiet work that features the woodwinds in a layering of harmonies. Other quiet moments in the program include vintage music by Percy Grainger, “Ye Banks and Braes, O Bonnie Doon” and Frank Ticheli’s “Loch Lomond,” arrangements of two famous Scottish melodies that also show off the woodwinds.

by the composer as a “canticle of praise without words,” in which three distinct musical themes alternate, showing off the various sections of the ensemble. “The Sinfonians,” based on a melody by Sir Arthur Sullivan, is a wind ensemble standard that harkens back to its military band beginnings. The concert will conclude with the Symphonic Suite from “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Episode 1” by John Williams.

The 2012-13 concert season also includes a spring concert, a concert of small ensemble music, and a patriotic concert in the summer. Biller said the Bakersfield Winds has been a labor of love.

“I used to affectionately call (the wind ensemble) ‘the garage band,’” Biller said.

“We were a bunch of musicians getting together to rehearse music.”

“From the get-go, it’s just continued to grow and flourish,” Biller said. “Everybody that’s in the group is doing it for the love of it.”

Biller said part of that growth is due to the ensemble’s waiting list of musicians ready to join, or at least fill in for absent regulars.

“There’s really not an audition for the group,” Biller said. “It’s really a contact of who we know is a qualified player.”

Equally important has been the growth of community support, including sponsorships and a growing audience.

BHS grad to perform chamber program St. Paul’s provides ideal acoustics for concert

ormer Bakersfield resident and Bakersfield High grad Cari Craig is the featured artist at Friday evening’s Ensemble Melodica chamber music concert.

Craig, 34, will perform works by Debussy, Bach, Rachmaninoff and Copland in a program that includes music by Arvo Part and Robert Schumann. Craig has been working with Ensemble Melodica founder and pianist Elizabeth Cervantes.

“I’m trying to build up a group to do some regular chamber music concerts, trying to get chamber music performed in the community,” Cervantes said.

The genre of “chamber music” specifically refers to music performed by soloists and small ensembles, usually one musician performing each part, instead of several players as one would see in an orchestra. Such ensembles typically performed in small rooms, or chambers, rather than in large theaters or auditoriums.

“It’s really meant to be in a small room,” Cervantes said.

“It’s meant to be intimate.”

This weekend’s performance is at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, a popular venue for chamber music and organ concerts. Older churches make particularly good chamber music concert halls, as they are relatively small and possess superior acoustical properties.

Cervantes and violinist Julia Haney of Arvo Part’s famous “Spiegel im Spiegel” (“Mirror in the Mirror”), a classic example of tintinnabuli, the Part’s signature compositional style that juxtaposes bell-like (“tintinnabuli” means “bells”) triads, or three-note chords, played one note at a time, against a simple melody moving up and down the scale, an effect similar to chant.

“It’s very meditative,” Cervantes said. “It’s very contemporary, but it’s not in the least bit dissonant.”

Cervantes, Haney and cellist Karen Blockley will perform the Piano Trio in d minor, Op. 63 by Robert Schumann, the first of three such trios by the composer. Craig is the featured artist for the second half of the concert. She will begin with the solo flute piece “Syrinx,” by Debussy.

“I think it’s probably one of the most famous pieces for flute Debussy ever wrote,” Craig said.

The piece is based on the Greek legend of the beautiful nymph Syrinx, who is pursued by the nature god, Pan. The nymph prays to be rescued, and she is turned into reeds. Pan takes the reeds and turns them into a musical instrument.

“This is story of the panflute,” Craig said.

Craig will also perform two movements of the Partita in a minor for solo flute, by J.S. Bach. Cervantes will accompany Craig in a performance of the Vocalise by Sergei Rachmaninoff, a transcription of the famous vocal work.

The concert will conclude with a performance of Aaron Copland’s Duet for Flute and Piano.

“I’m really excited about doing this piece,” Craig said.

“A lot of the time, we’re just accompanied by the piano.”

“It’s wonderful to perform a real duet,” Craig said.

During her high school years, Craig studied with Nancy Ayala, principal flutist for the Bakersfield Symphony.

After graduating, she attended Cal State Northridge, earning a Bachelor of Music in 2001.

Since that time, Craig, who is also the manager of the CSUN Youth Orchestra, has been working steadily.

“There is so much talent here,” Craig said. “One minute I can be recording for a movie or television, the next I’m performing for an art project.”

Craig also teaches flute, specializing in beginners, special-needs students and retired adults who want to relearn their instrument.

“It’s really rewarding to be able to share all that with my students,” Craig said.

Craig acknowledges that the economy is making things more difficult for her, but is still happy with her career.

“I’m really doing what I wanted right now,” Craig said.

“I would just like to be doing more of it.”

“I’m really having a fun life,” Craig said.

Matt’s picks Tribute to Steely Dan at Sandrini’s, 1918 Eye St., Saturday, $5, 9 p.m. 3228900 This show marks the debut of a longtime project by local troubadour Chris Carton, who’s assembled 14 local musicians with one goal: deconstruct the music of songwriters Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, known as Steely Dan. While it’s unclear exactly how much material the group will cover, it has been confirmed the group will present Steely Dan’s 1977 classic “Aja” in its entirety, along with a wealth of other material. If only Sandrini’s served grapefruit wine.

“It ain’t called the ‘Weird World’ for no reason! Nasty music is universal, and I make the best there is,” said Reid in a recent email interview, most of which can’t be used due to its colorful Blowflycentric foul language.

For an example of Blowfly’s music, do a Google search for his infamous spoof of “What a Difference a Day Makes,” titled “What a Difference a Lay Makes,” a spoof that landed Reid in court when composer Stanley Adams objected. Although the case was settled, Reid says Adams needs a sense of humor.

“He was also the president of ASCAP at the time, and how dare he make me more famous.”

Reid’s new comedy album is titled “Black in the Sack” and will be available for purchase at Friday’s show. In addition, Reid can be seen in indie director Otto Von Schirach’s upcoming sci-fi film, “Supermeng” as his Blowfly character.

“You know it’s gonna be messed up.”

“If they’re coming for dinner, they need to do so as soon as possible. Lunchtime they don’t need to, but it’s always best to call early. A lot of people forget how busy we get. We take dinner reservations and give them an hour and a half allotment.

We take them in advance but are starting to fill up now.”

Following dinner, the festivities continue throughout every area of the establishment, from the large banquet room, smaller dining room, outdoor patio and

rear lawn, if need be. There will be a deejay and $5 cover charge for those arriving after 9 p.m.

“This night is much more relaxed and less formal than New Year’s Eve,” Shine said.

“You don’t have to worry about your outfit, expensive dinner, and those types of things. We have room for people to filter into so they’re not just stuck at the bar.

We have the dining room, the main banquet room, the patio for people to filter into so they’re not just stuck at the bar.”
