lthough it will come as no surprise to anyone, Bakersfield loves food. But nowhere is that fact more evident than at the annual Taste of Home Cooking School, coming to Rabobank Arena on Tuesday. “Bakersfield is still the largest show on the West Coast!” said Kristi Larson, the show’s culinary specialist. “There were about 1,450 people at the show last year.” Connecting with those people, either the VIPs, who are given backstage tours, or the crowd watching the cooking demonstration of 10 dishes, is something that keeps Larson coming back. “I think my favorite part (of the show) is getting the chance to share some new recipes, ideas and techniques with the audience.” That’s good news for home cooks, who are growing in number and getting more creative, Larson said. “I think people have been cooking meals at home more often, and are willing to experiment a little with new flavors and ingredients. “Quick and easy meals, that are also healthy are also in demand.” The lineup of fall recipes delivers on all fronts. Mostly drawn from the show’s national sponsors — King Arthur Flour, West Bend Appliances, Kitchen Basics, Chex, Gallo Family Vineyards, Success Rice, Eggland’s Best Eggs, the National Pork Board and C&H Sugar — the recipes inspire Larson. “I really like all of the recipes in our fall lineup. I've always been a pumpkin fan, so the pumpkin whoopie pies are definitely at the top of my list as a favorite to eat.” For demonstration purposes, Larson and her staff will whip up a batch of whoopie pies Tuesday morning, so she’ll be able to finish the recipe minus the dish’s full cook time. On the savory side, Larson recommends the pork sliders, served with a cranberry sauce and pickled onions. “For a quick and easy party

food or simple weeknight dinner, the pork tenderloin sliders are fantastic. For comfort food, you can’t go wrong with a hearty stew. “I love the groundnut stew — it’s perfect for cool fall and winter days!” Rounding out the rest of the cooking lineup are barbecue chicken pizza, Tuscan bread salad, Chex peanut butter and chocolate blast, raspberry mustard pork loin, easy Thai chicken and rice, huevos rancheros and rich agave chocolate cake. Although the flagship publication is Taste of Home, Reiman Publications also puts out other foodie magazines like Healthy Cooking and Simple and Delicious. Fans of any of the publications should get a lot out of the show, Larson said. “We try to demonstrate recipes that could be found in any of the three magazines in the Taste of Home family. During the show, I try to offer ways to change the recipes to make them healthier or easier to prepare, if possible.” Some of that easier prep work, like chopping vegetables, takes place before the show, something that VIP guests may get to see during their pre-demo tour of the backstage and presentation area. Before the demo, guests can check out dozens of vendors promoting food, home improvement, shopping and more with samples and discounts. Among the businesses attending this year are Cupcakes n Crema, Bakersfield Hyundai, Urner’s, Dream Maker Bath & Kitchen, Albertsons and White Forest Nursery. For those interested in more recipes from Taste of Home, The Californian’s booth will sell four cookbooks: “Taste of Home Most Requested Recipes,” “Taste of Home Almost Homemade, “Taste

of Home Comfort Food Diet: Family Classic Collections”and Taste of Home Christmas Cookies and Candy.” (Copies of local photography book “Capture Kern County” also will be available.) A lucky few will win free cookbooks as part of the giveaways, which include an iPad, gift cards and gift baskets. The 10 dishes prepared in the demonstration will go out to 10 winners (bad news for folks who wanted samples!). Even after the show ends, the adventure continues for Larson, who has three more stops on the West Coast leg of the show. Though it can be hard spending so much time on the road, Larson said, there is a bright side. “Sometimes I get tired of being in my van for so many hours. But I love seeing so many beautiful parts of the country as I drive,

and I get to listen to a lot of great books that I don't have time to read.” As for Larson interacting with
home cooks, that doesn’t end when the show does. “I love hearing from Taste of Home fans on our blog and my Facebook page after the show, especially when they tell me what their favorite recipe is, or what they learned at the show.”
