Joseph and I would like to take a moment to congratulate the students who will graduate as part of the 2013 Class of Independence County. These students have worked diligently for the past thirteen years pursuing not only their own goals, but the goals their parents and teachers placed for them as well. Graduation is the reward for a job well done. It is a time mixed with relief and anxiety, joy and fear, for while one goal has been obtained a brand new one stands in its place. Whatever life may hold for you pursue it with all your heart and soul. Remember, while everyone’s goals are different each one is worth reaching. The journey may not always be easy, but it is the journey that makes the arriving worthwhile.
Cover Note: The students who grace our cover were chosen by their respective Principals. They are students that have shown grit and tenacity when facing not only school life, but life itself. They have risen to the top and are to be commended for their effort and perseverance. Each Principal took a moment to share why they chose these young men and women. You will find their stories on each schools leading page. From Batesville: Emily Barber and Rafeh Qureshi From Cedar Ridge: Charlsey Cagle and Blake Fuller From Midland: Lexie Wood and Hunter Biram From Southside: Sydney Bullard and Jake Hendricks

2013 Stand Out Seniors Rafeh Qureshi came to BHS at the beginning of his Junior year. He is a very driven young man and excels in everything he does. Rafeh is at the top of his class and during his senior year he has helped start peer Math tutoring on campus and is a co-founder of a campus magazine that features art and literature. Rafeh is a National Merit Finalist and I am certain that we will be reading about him on a national level in the near future. It is very common to see Rafeh running or biking through town and he is a very polite and respectful young man.
Emily Barber has been a Pioneer from the start. She is also very driven and succeeds at every level. Emily excels academically and has also reached the status of National Merit Finalist. While at BHS, she plays in the Pioneer Marching and Concert Bands, cheers for the Pioneers, Captains of the Flag section in the Pioneer Band and plays the violin. Emily is a very well rounded young lady, who will leave her mark on BHS as well as the world.
Both Rafeh and Emily are very involved in school activities and clubs and they are well respected by the peers and the staff at BHS.

2013 Stand Out Seniors Lexie Wood is a compassionate young lady with a quiet disposition who continually uses her talents and expertise to benefit others. She has been essential to our EAST Lab for the past four years and has volunteered to help various groups through project creation and investment of personal time. She works within multiple groups including Student Council, Beta, Key Club and the Gifted/Talented/ Creative department to enrich her own life experiences while helping others enrich their lives as well.
Many students give of time and energy out of necessity as requirements bind them, but Hunter Biram gives of himself continually through roles he has chosen to accept including Student Council President and Midland Yearbook Editor. Hunter’s personality allows him the opportunity to succeed on a personal level while encouraging others around him to be successful at the same time. His compassion allows him to shine even if he is not the one in the limelight.

2013 Stand Out Seniors Sydney Bullard is a student who never allows a challenge to stand in her way. Both in the classroom and out, I have watched her diligently pursue her goals. Not all of her classes have come easy to her; through the years she has attended tutoring sessions when she gets stuck on a certain skill. I have watched her consistently seek help with grammar which is a weak area for her, she would readily admit. However, she has not allowed any weaknesses to stand in her way; she has instead pushed through and has taken Pre AP and AP classes to challenge and better herself. Although she may not be the fastest on the cross country team, one can see her everyday persistently training to get better. In the way of social situations, Sydney always goes her own way. She doesn’t change her focus or her convictions for anyone. She is her own person and as a result is a friend to everyone. When speaking with some students, I asked, “What word do you think of to describe Sydney Bullard?” Immediately, in unison, they replied “Sweetheart.” They went on to explain that she is a friend to all and is talented yet humble. Instead of allowing herself to be caught up in gossip or peer pressure, she remains true to herself and those around her.
Jake Hendricks is a man of his own. He is not going to be influenced by those around him. He is independent and has a certain set of beliefs that separates him from the crowd. Jake has shown his abilities on the field and in the classroom. He has worked hard to achieve his success. No one handed him anything. No one cut corners for him. Jake is a self-made man. Has he had support from his family, teachers and coaches? Yes. But, make no mistake about it; he has accomplished his goals because of patience and grit. Jake discovered a “fork in the road” about a year ago. The adults around him knew that the correct choice would put him on the right track. The adults also knew that the wrong choice could cause him to drop out. I believe Jake picked the best path. I admire Jake Hendricks and I am proud of Jake Hendricks. I will miss Jake.
