WE Adopt a Pet Samson, a handsome 3 year old Collie/Lab mix. He is a loving, playful, and strong dog brought to the shelter as a stray over two years ago. Samson would do best with plenty of yard for exercise, but would also enjoy inside love and attention. Samson is very happy despite being overlooked for adoption at the shelter. He gets along best with female dogs. Samson needs you! Samson’s adoption fee is $100.00 and this includes sterilization, shots, and worming with an optional microchipping and registration for an additional $20.00. We have a dog park to check compatibility with existing dogs. Anyone interested in adopting Samson, please go to heberspringshumanesociety. com and complete an adoption application. If your application is approved, a volunteer will contact you to set up a meet and greet appointment. Boo Kitty, a beautiful 3 ½ year old DSH cat who’s owner had too many male cats, so Boo was brought to the shelter to find a better home. This fellow likes to roam around the office and will allow a few people to pet him a little, but for the most part prefers to be by himself. He is an inside cat only. A home is just what Boo Kitty needs along with someone to love him! Boo Kitty’s adoption fee is $60.00 and this includes first shots, worming, and sterilization.

editors note Cha-Cha-Cha-Cha-Changes
April showers bring May flowers and the promise of summer days on the horizon. It would seem we all survived the time change in mid-March without too much trouble. Now I find myself sprinting headlong into the promise of longer days, yearning for the sounds of laughter, conversation and the smack of the bat against a well thrown pitch. I delight in watching my grands, ages 5 - 10, hone their skills at the ballpark each spring. I also look forward to playing in my flower garden; barefooted with dirt under my fingernails, smelling the earth and being serenaded by the Robins and Mockingbirds. Being outdoors brings so much joy to my soul. Being outdoors is Kati Rouse’s favorite place as well. You will find her story a little further inside along with your April Neighbor, Student and Hometown Heroes. We are grateful for your readership and invite you to share your story ideas and events with us. In case you weren’t aware you can also find us in digital format on our FB page! Kati and Jamie Rouse are both Memphis natives who have called Heber Springs home for close to 2 decades. Their story began in 2001 when the two met at a CPR training class in Memphis, “There I was in class when I unexpectedly met this fly fishing guide who was getting ready to go to Alaska. Little did I know that just a little over a year later, we would get married, and move to the Little Red River.” Kati was always the outdoors type, “I had always been involved in sports and preferred being outside. I never liked to shop or spend a ton of time indoors.” As a teenager, she loved going on rafting, hiking and ski trips with her church youth group and friends. “I continued working with youth once I graduated college and chaperoned a lot of the outdoors adventures.” Kati graduated from Rhodes College where she majored in biology, ran track and cross
country and worked as a student trainer. She continued her education in exercise physiology doing graduate work at University of Memphis. She became a licensed athletic trainer and worked at Campbell Clinic Orthopedics where she worked with many high school and college athletes. Jamie spent his childhood visiting Heber Springs with his family and developed a love for the place that would call him home as an adult. In 1992 Jamie was living in a 24 foot camper at Rim Shoals on the banks of the White River. “It was fortunate that I realized in college that I was not cut out for a real job, because I’m not a 9 to 5 kind of guy. So I migrated to my passion, fly-fishing.” Kati shared, “He spent endless hours in pursuit of his dream honing his skills and developing his techniques, which are now common place.” He had started his guiding on the White River and later switched over to the Little Red River for the

wild brown trout. After years of guiding, Jamie has earned many nicknames, ranging from Fish Whisperer to Fish Nazi. However, most days on the water it’s simply Captain. “Over the years I’ve learned how to pursue a wide variety of species in a wide variety of water conditions for a wide variety of anglers.” In 2004 he became an Endorsed Guide for the Orvis Company. In 2007 he was awarded their prestigious Guide of the Year. “I was a finalist for Guide of the Year in 2011. Rouse Fly Fishing won Orvis Endorsed Guide Service of the Year in 2012 and was a finalist in 2013 and 2014.” Jaime was involved in starting the Watershed Alliance for the Little Red River which is now Trout Unlimited Chapter 722 and he currently serves on the Arkansas Trout Advisory Committee. He has developed many fly patterns, which are available commercially. He has even pioneered advanced streamer techniques for producing very large carnivorous trout. Kati adds, “Jamie has continued to explore, create and develop with our team.” Jamie had already been guiding for several years when the couple settled in on the Little Red River. He had guided many tours at the Rainbow King Lodge in Alaska, Kati even helped out with a couple of those tours after the couple married. “I really didn’t fly fish prior to meeting Jamie, so I have learned a ton from him.” She was also doing some contract work as an athletic trainer with Hendrix College, “I did not want to continue to commute, so I trained my sights on becoming an integral part of developing our guide service, Rouse Fly Fishing.” The service has grown
gradually over the years, “I began just managing all the booking and accounting. Then I started enjoying the creative side and developed our website and manage our social media and PR.” Kati has served as a board member and secretary of Trout Unlimited Chapter 722 and is currently on the board of the Little Red River Foundation. Kati also does a little freelance writing for Dun Magazine, the Orvis blog. In her efforts to capture the lifestyle, Kati would do a little fieldwork getting out on the water, “As I was becoming more a part of that, I started getting requests to guide other women and have been doing that the past couple of years now.”

However, when we are not fishing, we are playing disc golf, my other favorite sport.” They have hosted several Pro Disc Golfers over the last several years, enjoying getting the chance to fish and hang out with Nate Sexton, James Conrad, Paige Pierce and Nate Perkins. enjoy helping people this will be a rewarding career. Just make sure this is what you want because if you are not in it for the right reasons this job will chew you up and spit you out because it is a calling. It is not like any other job out there. Also it does not pay very well so you need to learn to budget. You will not get rich being a police officer.
What got you interested in this line of work? I can’t say what got me interested in police work. It is just something I have always wanted to do since I was a little kid. I have always loved helping people in their time of need, I guess you can say the job chose me in life. What do you find most rewarding about the job? The most rewarding part is being able to help people whether they are stranded on the side of the road or responding to calls of service. You can see the appreciation on their face during the encounter and it makes me feel good that I am serving my community! What advice would you give to someone who wants to become a deputy? The advice I would give would be if you love the job and

Tell us about your family. It’s me, my husband, and a daughter that’s eight years old. We’re currently expecting a little girl in May. Plus our dog Rubble! What got you interested in becoming a dispatcher? When I moved here from Tennessee, my friend from high school who works in the police department, told me about this opening in dispatching. It just kind of fell in my lap. Who is your hero? My brother Matt. He’s actually younger than I am but, he’s just someone that I’ve always looked up to. He’s currently in the military and he’ll help out with anything that I ask. He’s just right on it. He’s always been my go to person. What do you find most rewarding about the job? I like getting to know that I’ve made someone’s day easier.

Notes from the Clearing Joey Thomas
The restless young warrior put down her axe and unstrung her bow from around her shoulders to lay down beside the first weapon. She was primed for battle, knowing the warring tribe could be upon the plains at anytime. She had been strapped up and readied for four days and the relentless attention was exhausting. She had just finished another perimeter check and stopped before the babbling brook, a consistent source of water for her people. She, worn with readiness, put down her arms for the cure of the cool water. She put down her attention for forgetfullness and submerged her worry with ease. Forgetting to be scared, not remembering to imagine how awful the battle would be, idle in the ease of relief. Lost in the loss of concern, she held her breath and closed her eyes to disappear once again below the surface. It was then that the monsters, the ghosts, and the battle ready foes that she put out of her mind, melted away with the fear that created them.
