Please show Tina the good life! Tina’s adoption fee is $100.00 and this includes first shots, worming, and sterilization. Anyone interested in adopting Tina, please go to heberspringshumanesociety.com and complete an adoption application. A volunteer will contact you to set up a meet and greet appointment. Our Shelter Spotlight is Lily, a pretty 1 year old DSH cat. This sweet girl enjoys a nice soft kitty bed with a blanket over it to hide and sleep. She knows her name Lily, and will talk to visitors at her cage. Lily loves head scratches, but isn’t fond of being picked up and held. This sweetie also loves playing with cat toys. She would be best with adults. Lily’s adoption fee is $60.00 and this includes first shots, worming, and sterilization. Anyone interested in adopting Lily, please go to heberspringshumanesociety.com and complete an adoption application. A volunteer will contact you to set up a meet and greet appointment.

editors note 2022, Here We Go!
Welcoming a New Year with open arms, that’s what we are trained to do, and by dingy that is what we are going to do! We have all overcome some tough years and obstacles in recent years and if you’re like me, this new year brings with it a bit of hesitant and skeptical notions! However, some words that always and without fail enter my mind are those of my mom’s, “pull yourself up by your bootstraps.” Simple as that, just face it and move through it with a smile on your face and love in your heart! We might not be able to control a lot of what happens around us, but we can control how it affects us. A good outlook goes long way! Lots of good and enjoyable times await us throughout the coming year, and we look forward to bringing you a glimpse of life around the Water’s Edge over the upcoming months! - Gina Slagley

Some people feel the rain. Others just get wet - Bob Dylan. Grace Stormont local musician, is not only feeling every drop but flourishing in the waves of where her music is taking her as she releases her first C.D.
“My music isn’t just a career, it encompasses who I am.” Water’s Edge - Tell us a little about you and your connection to Cleburne County. Grace Stormont - My name is Grace Stormont, and I am a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Wilburn, AR. I’m actually the 6th generation in my family to live in Cleburne County, my mother’s family has had a homestead in Wilburn since the midlate 1800s. I grew up in Wilburn at our homestead in a house built from the lumber of the original, and I went to Pangburn Public Schools through elementary and middle school. W.E. - Does your Family still live in Cleburne County? Grace Stormont - Yes, a large part of my family still does. I have been back-and-forth between Mountain View and Wilburn since I was 15 years old, when I started working at the Ozark Folk Center State Park as a contract musician. About a year ago, I moved back to Wilburn from Mountain View, where I was working as an instructor in the Music Roots program for Mountain View Schools before the Covid-19 pandemic. W.E. - When did you first become interested in music? At what age? Grace Stormont - When I was 12 or 13, I joined my school’s Jr. Choir. I had always enjoyed music, and I knew that I wanted to be able to express myself musically in some capacity. I also picked up my first instrument (guitar) at that age, because I wanted to be able to accompany myself when I sang. W.E. - Who are you influenced by musically? Grace Stormont - That’s always a tough question to answer, because there are so many that come to mind. Considering my songwriting and music style, I feel that I am most influenced by the works of Bob Dylan, Gillian Welch, Jason Isbell, and Sarah Jarosz. Just to name a few. W.E. - Tell us a little about your journey? Grace Stormont - When I was first learning to play the guitar, I was only really playing and singing at church and at school in choir. When I was about 14, my guitar teacher turned me on to a little jam session that took place every Friday night at the old
AAA parts store in Heber. Those jams are what sparked my interest in the genres of folk, bluegrass, old time, country and americana music. By the time I turned 15, my family and I had moved to the Mountain View area and I began working at the Folk Center. During my time there, I developed a deep appreciation for the history and music of the Ozarks, and I learned about Almeda Riddle, a ballad singer who was from the Cleburne/ Van Buren County area. I had the privilege to open for acts such as The Steel Wheels, Bonnie Montgomery, Leyla McCalla, Malcom Holcombe, Suzy Bogguss and Carlene Carter, the daughter of June Carter-Cash. I’ve also played some pretty awesome venues throughout my career, including South On Main and Whitewater Tavern in Little Rock, and Hillberry Harvest Moon Festival in Eureka Springs. I had the privilege to open up for Riley Green at the Arkansas State Fair this year as well. In June of 2021, I received 2 Arkansas Country Music Awards- Acoustic Act of the Year and Song of the Year for my song, ‘On Your Own’, which is the title track for my new album. W.E. - What does the release of your CD mean to you? (Congratulations by the way, how exciting!) Grace Stormont - Thank you so much! It almost feels like a whole new chapter, or a re-invention of myself. ‘On Your Own’ is the first album that I have released that contains nothing but songs I’ve written. I’m starting to come out of my shell as a songwriter, and I’m very excited to be sharing my work with anyone who will listen. W.E. - Next step and plans for your career from this point? Grace Stormont - Honestly, my plan has always been to keep booking gigs, keep on writing, and hopefully gain a few fans along the way. My music isn’t just a career, it encompasses who I am.

Cowboy Cherolet Buick GMC Abbey Tillman and Stella Rayford, way in our school and community. two of our 5th grade students at Heber Springs Elementary, came to their teacher in November with a leadership project idea of having a pet supply and food drive Abbey Tillman and Stella Rayford for the Heber Springs Humane Society. After receiving approval, the girls made all the posters to advertise the donation drive and hung them around the school. They got their parents to take them to the Humane Society during the week of Thanksgiving break to make a video to post to the schools social media page and to show in classrooms to help get the word out. Stella and Abbey both have a heart for animals and were so excited to watch the donations come in. The girls will then help deliver the food and supplies to the Humane Society. All of the staff and students at Heber Springs Elementary are very proud of these girls and want to say thank you for being leaders that light the

What started out with the officers at the Heber Springs Police Department paying to have a beard, transformed into an event to give back to the kids in the community. Detective Dan Malone has friends who are fellow officers all over the US. One in California was involved with Shop with a Cop and shared with Detective Malone all that it offered his community. Detective Malone took the event and formed it to benefit kids in Heber Springs. He got his fellow officers involved by making it a game of sorts. Each guy who wanted to grow a beard for a few months, donated money to the Shop with a Cop fund and in turn he didn’t have to shave. Last year was the first year of Shop with a Cop in Heber Springs. The Heber Springs Police Department collected $3,000 from the officers and a few businesses in the community. They found kids who would benefit from some Christmas help and a positive influence from a police officer. The officers took 24 kids ranging from Kindergarten to 3rd grade, to Walmart and let them pick out toys for Christmas.
This year the event has grown! The department raised close to $5,000 in donations from the officers and more local businesses. 40 kids from Heber Springs Elementary got to enjoy a pizza party and shopping with not only the officers from the Heber Springs Police Department but also the Cleburne County Sheriff’s Department, Arkansas State Police, Arkansas Game and Fish, Cleburne County Probation and Parol officers, Arkansas Highway Department, and Quitman Police Department. Every level of local law enforcement was involved with this year’s Shop with a Cop. The Heber Springs Police Department wants to spread joy and happiness to local community kids in the area during what can be a tough holiday season, while also fostering a positive relationship between the kids and law enforcement.

Home Town Heroes Tell us a little bit about your family The Haile family is not much different from many of the families around here today. The Haile/Ghent-Head families started here in the late 1800's and 1930's, land homesteaded by some of them has been handed down or purchased through the years and is still owned and farmed by my brother and I today. My mother and father started Dairy farming in the late 1960's and my brothers and I learned our work ethic there. The drought of 2012 and prices forced us out of the dairy business and we started a beef operation in 2013 that still operates today. I got into law enforcement as a reserve deputy in 1994 and came to work for the City of Heber Springs in 2002. I have always worked two jobs and have enjoyed both of them. My wife Tammy got into fitness training as the dairy was shutting down and now owns Body Strong Fitness in Heber Springs and does some classes at the Heber Springs Community Center. Our son Connor completed his Bachelors degree at University of Central Arkansas and is currently at Indiana University taking classes and planning to be an eye doctor. What is your favorite part of your job? The variety of jobs within law enforcement prepared me for where I am today and I have enjoyed them all (Patrol, SWAT, K-9 and Criminal Investigations). I have always served and protected the people to the best of my ability but as Chief of Police, I not only serve the people of Heber Springs, but I feel like I am in a position to serve the people I have worked with and those that I am now Sheriff Chris Brown
Tell us a little bit about your family. I have been so blessed with such an incredible family. They are wonderful, supportive, and my absolute best friends in the world. My wife, Ali, and I have been married for 13 years, and we have four amazing daughters, ages 11, 10, 7, and 4. The girls love riding horses, playing piano, and spending time with Daddy shooting guns. For the last few years, we have also hosted a foreign exchange student. One from Germany, one from Italy, and one from France. It has been a great experience, and has exposed our girls to different cultures and ideas. As a family, we love taking trips, going to church, horse riding events, and having fun adventures together. What is your favorite part of your job? I love so many different things about this job, but one of my favorite things about this job is that the only thing you can expect every day is the unexpected. Every day is going to be different, and present its own unique

hiring and responsible for. If I am treating them right they will in turn serve the city well which is our goal. Who is your hero in life? My father Arwood Haile who taught me that if you will put God first in your life then all of the other things will work themselves out. What advice would you give to someone who wants to become a police officer? This is still an honorable profession despite what others may say or think. Education and common sense will take you a long way in this job but always prepare yourselves mentally and physically for the work ahead. challenges. You’ll never know what you are going to do, who you are going to talk to, or where you might end up through the course of your day, and that is a blast. What is your favorite quote? I have many quotes that I absolutely love, but two that really stand out to me. The first is a Bible verse (1 Corinthians 4:2): “Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.” A steward in this context was the Chief servant. It gives us the idea that we should serve others and we should set that example for those around us. Faithful to our job of service, and reliable. the second is from Aristotle: “We are what we repeatedly do; excellence then is not an act, but a habit.” Really going hand in hand with the verse, this quote reinforces that our choices every day affect our performance, our reliability, and the importance of doing all the small things right, even when no one is looking. What do you find most challenging about the job? Most all of us that get into law enforcement do so because we have a desire to help people, and we want to make a difference in our communities. I think one of the most challenging things about this job is that sometimes it’s hard to see if you’re making a difference. There is a lot of red tape and frustration that inherently comes along with law enforcement, and it can often be hard to see outside of that. It is so important for all of us that do this job to hold tight to our “why” (why we started this job in the first place), and remember that we can and do make a difference every day in our communities.
