Heber Springs Area Chamber of Commerce’s 66th Annual Banquet

WE Adopt a Pet Jackson is an all around great 6 year old Hound mix brought to the shelter because his owner could not care for him. He is very friendly, sensitive, loving, smart, and fun. We love him! He goes on outings with his favorite volunteer and is so happy, but cries when back in the kennel. He is well behaved and sits nicely waiting for a command and learns quickly. Jackson is house trained and gets along with cats and some dogs. He is a most definite yes! Adopt Jackson today!

Beautiful KiKi is a 3 year old domestic short-haired cat that has been at the shelter too long. This gal likes to roam around the office and mostly hides during the day, but will go back to her cage on her own at night. She is very smart, but doesn’t like to be held. Kiki is an indoor cat only and gets along with other cats. Come meet KiKi and give her the loving home she desires!

editors note Play Ball!

Take me out to the ball game! My youngest two grands finished their t-ball season and now their older siblings have hit the field. Our Natalee is shaping up into a fine short-stop and Gage is honing his skill on the pitcher’s mound. This Naunee could not be more proud! Now, if I can just figure out how to be two places at once. Speaking of being two places at once, Cynthia Herrin has done a tremendous job this month keeping up with her brood as well as keeping the pages of this month’s issue brimming with

Home Town Heroes

Cynthia Herrin

Tell us a little bit about your family. I come from a military family. Father was Navy, as was I. We moved all over the place until he retired here. When he retired, I went to college and then joined the Navy where I served 8 years as a Hospital Corpsman with Marine Corps Recon units. I’m now married to Jenna Malone, who works at the old court house here in town. We have 2 kids, Colton, age 12, Addison, age 8. 3 dogs, 2 cats and are currently in the process of building a home here in Heber Springs. What made you decide to serve the city of Heber Springs? I have a servants heart and have always enjoyed serving my country and communities. It is also part of the family business as I am 4th generation law enforcement and 4th generation military. My family and I moved here to be closer to my parents, brother, and wife’s family once I got out of the military in 2014. What do you find most rewarding about the job? I enjoy helping people and making this a better town to live in, however I can accomplish that goal. I also enjoy the constant betterment of myself through continued training, education, and experience. What is your favorite quote? Romans 8:31 “What, then, shall we say in response to these things? For if God is for us, then who can be

against us?” In context, Paul’s question appears to be asking about condemnation against Christians. In the case of condemnation, God is the judge and if He is for us, then no one can condemn us and nothing can separate us from the love of God.

Tell us about your family. I’m married with four kids. Our baby is ten years old and we have multiple animals of all kinds. What made you decide to serve Cleburne County? I really like this line of work as far as being able to help people when they are unable to help themselves. I enjoy the uncertainty of every shift. It’s definitely never boring. We get calls of all shapes and all sizes all day long. Its not a boring Monday through Friday job by any means. What do you find most challenging about the job? It really depends on the day and shift and the call. Sometimes its locating people when they’re not sure where they are. Sometimes its helping tourists from out of town that don’t even know what city they’re in. And then at times its just the stress of doing everything all at once while everyone else assumes you are only taking care of them. What advice would you give to someone who wants to become a dispatcher? Be a great multitasker. That is the biggest part of this job. Being able to have your right hand doing something while your left hand is dispatching another call. While you’re processing the last call trying to make

sure everyone is where they are suppose to be. Its the multitasking and being able to keep track of multiple calls and multiple agencies all at once throughout the entire county.

Notes from the Clearing Joey Thomas

It was like a badge I wore beneath my clothes, a tattoo earned but unseen by the world at large. A deserved scar that silently carried the story of life lived, experience gained. It was like seeing a dinosaur and not needing to tell anyone about it, wanting to keep it safe from those who might want to kill it or interrupt its life cycle for a selfie. It was exciting news that you’ve been waiting to share your entire life and deciding you were good. Bringing it up didn’t make it any more real or deserved or awesome. It simply was a thing that you now achieved. It was a part of who you became and now were, forever forward from this day on. It is a shot of confidence, a boost of integrity, a kick of persistance quantified and measured in your favor. 20 Heber Spring’s Social and Community Magazine
