WE Adopt a Pet Our Shelter Spotlight is Dixon, a wonderful 3 year old DSH cat. Dixon was brought to the shelter as a stray and quickly became the office favorite. Everyone loves Dixon because he is friendly, loving, and an all around great cat. This fur ball has super big yellow eyes that get everyone’s attention and are quite captivating. Dixon is an inside cat only and loves to lounge and be rubbed. Dixon’s adoption fee is $60.00 and this includes first shots, worming, and sterilization. Anyone interested in adopting this cutie, please go to heberspringshumanesociety.com and complete an adoption application. If your application is approved, a volunteer will contact you to set up a meet and greet appointment. Another Shelter Spotlight is Mac, a fantastic 4 year old Shepherd Lab mix. Mac’s owner died and left him sad and alone. Mac misses a home and has been at the shelter over 2 years. This boy is very sweet, happy, and smart. He gets along with other dogs. He has a small amount of bald spots around his ears and chest, and requires daily medication. It’s really not a big deal if you are a true animal lover. Mac is looking for someone to unconditionally love him because he has so much love to give back. He loves playing, taking walks, and soaking up attention from everyone. Please be the one to give Mac a home again. He really needs you! Mac’s adoption fee is $100.00 and this includes sterilization, shots, and worming with an optional microchipping and registration for an additional $20.00. We have a dog park to check compatibility with existing dogs. Anyone interested in adopting Mac, please go to heberspringshumanesociety. com and complete an adoption application. If your application is approved, a volunteer will contact you to set up a meet and greet appointment.

editors note Torn
Writing this edition of Publisher’s Notes has me torn between a couple of directions. First of all I want to thank Wayne Bryan of Tumbling Shoals, for his suggestion that Water’s Edge should shine a light on local treasure Mr. Paul Von Kanel, who lives in Greers Ferry. I thoroughly enjoyed visiting with Paul and sharing his story with our readers. Our goal as a local magazine is to showcase your neighbors and tell the stories that might not otherwise be celebrated in the community. We want you to feel that this publication is a platform that you can be comfortable with making suggestions for us to consider using as content. Please, feel free to give us a call or drop us a note with your ideas! I also want to address the world around us and acknowledge the unrest that it is causing in our hearts. Peace and comfort is something we seek especially during times like these. A quiet and calm state of mind can seem unattainable during difficult times in our lives. Whatever trials or obstacles you might be facing in your life, there is a peace in knowing that our God is in control. “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” - John 16:33 Thank you Cleburne County for your support of Water’s Edge! - Gina Slagley

WE Neighbor of the Month Where did you grow up: I was born in Turkey and my mom and I came to the United States in 1979 after my dad passed away. We came only to attend the funeral and meet my father’s side of the family. A trip that was only supposed to be a few months, turned into 42 years in Heber Springs. My mom left everything she knew to take this risk to give me a better life and I thank her every day! As a kid, we would travel back to Turkey every other summer to see her family, and now we try to go as much as possible to see her. Education: Heber Springs Schools Lyon College - Psychology UCA - Master’s of Teaching ASU - Education Specialist Curriculum *Still working on my Master’s in Communication with ASU Work: This will be my 10th year at Heber Springs Schools. I have been at the Heber Springs Middle School since day 1 teaching Language, Science, and Math. I began my new role as the Communications Coordinator in 2019 and now I teach 6th Grade Advanced Math and handle all communications for the school district. Family: My husband, Chris, and I have been together for over 20 years and married for almost 19. We have three amazing kiddos: Serena, 22, graduated from Heber Springs and played basketball at Hendrix College, she now lives in Orlando, Florida and works for the Walt Disney Company and Mouse Marketplace. Bauer, 16, is a Junior at Heber Springs High School. He is my mini-me even though he is taller. He plays tennis, basketball, and next year he is dipping his toe into football once again. Bryeken, 8, is a 3rd Grader at Heber Springs Elementary. He is the perfect combination of his sister and his brother. He plays soccer for Arkansas United and loves to play basketball like his older siblings. My mom moved back to Turkey in 2018 to be with her brother and sisters and I was lucky to have her visit just a few months ago. Community Activities: I am a member of: Heber Springs Chamber Ambassadors ASU-Beebe Lecture-Concert Series Board Member As the Communications Coordinator for the school district, I try my hardest to attend all school activities and community activities, it is a great way to speak with parents and let them put a face with the name/voice. What is something people don’t know about you: Not to take this to a morbid/sad place....my father was 6 Heber Spring’s Social and Community Magazine
Bahar Pruitt
killed in Turkey by a group of Iranian terrorists after the 1979 Iranian Hostage Crisis, many individuals were scared that my mom and I would be targeted next and we were brought over to the USA for his funeral by permission from President Jimmy Carter. When I was 12 years old I was crowned Miss Arkansas Pre-Teen. I worked for Walt Disney World in Entertainment after I graduated from Lyon College
Hobbies: I enjoy attending sporting events that my kids are involved in, I love to just sit and watch Disney movies, travel with my travel companion (my husband), and watch anything on the Food Network. Idea of a fun weekend: Hopping in my car and driving down to Orlando to hang out with my daughter in the Happiest Place on Earth! I love Disney and anything associated with Disney. Words to live by: Tough times don’t last...tough people do! What do you enjoy most about being a part of the Heber Springs Community: I absolutely love the way the people of this community come together during times of need. We may have arguments on Facebook over different things, but when someone or something needs help, we all pull together.

When Wayne Bryan of Tumbling Shoals contacted us at Water’s Edge to suggest that we talk to his longtime friend Paul Von Kanel, well, how could we resist? Wayne Bryan - His name is Paul Von Kanel, he lives in Greers Ferry and is still riding his motorcycle at 88+ years. He is severely handicapped, but that doesn’t slow him down much. My brother and I had to build a special rack on the back of his motorcycle to mount the walker he uses to get around on. He has over 400,000 miles riding , and goes to the Gym in Heber 3 days a week. I have ridden many miles with Paul, he has traveled to Mexico and most of North America, including a trip to Alaska where he was almost killed when he ran off a mountainside. His motivation? “If I sit down, I’ll die”. So, he forces himself to get up each day, and get out to either ride or at least go get a cup of coffee at The Jitterbug in Heber. He has been involved in several wrecks, over the years and his body has taken a pummeling, each accident leaving a harsh toll to be paid. Paul, a US Veteran, has a lot
of story to be told. Fans of Water’s Edge Magazine, and friends of Paul, have suggested that he needed his story told here. He has a Facebook Page, still does his own taxes, and although he can only get around as fast as his walker allows, he still gets there. There is a group of ladies that come in the Jitterbug and he tries his best to be there to gather the hugs and enjoy the fuss they make over him! They gave him his 88th Birthday Party, and he left there to make a ride to Eureka Springs. Paul Von Kanel is a true inspiration to us all. We love his drive to live! Water’s Edge - How did you get started riding motorcycles? Paul Von Kanel - Well I didn’t grow up with one, we didn’t have the money to buy one. I rode dirt bikes in the

70’s and bought my first Gold Wing in 82’, I put 100,000 miles on it and owned several more after that one. I ride a Can Am Spider now and really enjoy it. Water’s Edge - Tell us about some of the journeys you’ve been on. Paul - I’ve riden a bike in every state except Hawaii. I’ve rode to Alaska and all of the providences in Canada and in seven states in Mexico. Camping in tents most of the time along the way. My wife rode with me along many of those miles - we were together 56 years, she passed away in 2012. We had three children and a wonderful married life. I moved to Cleburne County to be closer to my daughter. Paul has had a few mishaps while riding along the way, but continues to get back on his bike and ride! “Paul has been a big inspiration to our local biker community, he is always up for a ride. He frequents DTP weekly and never seems to meet a stranger. He has become one of the many fixtures folks expect to run into when they pull into our lot.” - David Lee, Drasco Trading Post owner

Home Town Heroes Tell us a little bit about your family. I am married to my wonderful wife Heather. Heather is in the United State Army and has been for just a little over 10 years. Heather is also an LPN and works at UCA. We both graduated from ASU Mountain Home in 2014 and shortly after in June of 2014 we got married. We have three wonderful daughters, MaKinlee (8yrs), Westlyn (4yrs), and Gentry (5months). We made Heber Springs our home in 2015 and have loved every minute of it.

Our Shop with a Cop program has been one of the biggest blessings so far. Seeing the joy in the children’s eyes as we take them in our patrol cars lights flashing, sirens whaling, and then shopping has made every negative experience seem small.
What is one thing most people don’t know about you? Prior to my employment with Heber Springs Police Department I was a butcher for Harp’s and worked at various stores in Baxter and Marion counties. Who is your hero in life? My hero would have to be my dad. Although he died when I was 9yrs old, he spurred my interest into law enforcement. I remember riding around with Izard County deputy Chuck Day growing up and getting to talk on the Cobra CB radio to him. My dad was also an auxiliary deputy for Izard County and I was mesmerized by the respect people showed law enforcement back then. What do you find most rewarding about the job? What is your favorite part of your job? The best part of the job to me is knowing that I’m doing my part to make a difference on what could be someones worst day. With all the negativity going on in the world, know that we are here to do something good. Knowing that you did your best to help save someones life, home or possessions. What made you decide to serve the city of Heber Springs? Heber Springs is my home. I’ve lived here since I was in middle school. I wanted to help do my part and it is very rewarding being able to serve my community. What do you find most challenging about the job? To me the most challenging part of being a fire fighter is probably the mental and physical aspect. Fire fighting is a very demanding job, having to stay somewhat physically fit is a must because you never know what you may encounter. You may be fighting a

Notes from the Clearing Joey Thomas
The cloud ladened sky was full to bursting with ice. The frozen shrapnel dropped to the blue planet at the center of the atmosphere where the driving species slipped and slid to and fro in their ususal hurry. The keeper of this moment listened to the pixie pecks upon the skylight above and cherished his warm shelter all the more. He wasn’t chosen, at least as far as he knew, but the moment unfolded around him, none the less. Experience told him that he wasn’t the only one experiencing this moment in time, but he also knew that he was indeed, the only creature sensing this moment from his perspective; sitting here, hearing, seeing, feeling all of this in this particular spot. He didn’t claim to be special or better or even different, just alone in his exact sense of the world. He knew that this was what made the world so unique and beautiful and hard and tragic. It allowed us to feel alone in our darkest moments and connected when the roll of the dice fell our way. He knew that this was the simple truth of it all, somehow, and also the deepest mystery of every unexplained occurance in This Amazing Place within the Milky Way.
