Published in 1941 or 1942 by the Whitman Publishing Company, Racine Wisconsin (Copyright, MCMXLI) and written by Gordon A. J. Petersen, this little book provides high-level information about the U.S. Army including rankings, insignia, military terms and more. Boasting “over 140 illustrations in color” this book is beautifully clean in design. It sticks to two typefaces (Futura and …..) and utilizes simple 2 and 3 column grids.Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of this 5” x 3.5” book is its illustrations. Styles range from the traditional to the goofy to the down right scary. My personal favorites are the Ninety-sixth Bombardment and the Ninety-seventh Observation Squadrons.
